no but the thing is, when the hero falls in love with the villain she is falling in love with the darkest parts of herself. she is owning her shadow and the owning makes her stronger. it is not about whether a ship is toxic or romanticising abuse because it’s not about two individuals. the struggle is not one between two people, just like the love is not between two people. when the hero falls in love with the villain she is loving herself. when she loves herself she is stronger, better, able to transform darkness instead of running from it. at the moment of loving, a person changes. the loved changes. and the love of the villain changes the hero. it’s all about this, don’t you see?

if you like Catherine x Peter in The Great you probably like Jane x Guildford in My Lady Jane and that's a scientific fact actually
if anything, they are both "wants to make the world better" woman x "ok if you say so" man

The most ironic thing I find is that Ellen & Orlok are compared to Saurondriel / Haladriel, who himself as ship has already been compared to Dracmina (the other equivalent of Ellen & Orlok). Knowing that the actress of Galadriel has already played Mina (equivalent of Ellen so) in an another adaptation of Dracula. And that Saurondriel / Haladriel is also actively compared to the ship between Peter x Catherine of The Great. Peter played by the same actor as Thomas in Nosferatu, the 3rd part of the love triangle with Ellen & Orlok. Everything is linked.

when the sinned loves the sinner it is a transformative act. the love does not erase the sin but it cleanses the sinner of all that they have been. love is redemption and it can exist without logic or reason. whether or not the sinner deserves to be loved is no consequence. the love has fundamentally altered them, the fact that it is there. the sinned gains nothing from loving the sinner except for the peace of owning their destiny. for it is one’s destiny to strive to be complete. one cannot be complete when it only exists in a half. so the pieces must be collected and the sinned must love the sinner without the expectation that their love will change them, because it already has. when love exists without reason it is because the love is not a human love. it is now part of the creative and destructive forces of all that has lived, that has made life what it is. and at the moment of loving, the sinner is changed. the pieces are collected. both have returned home.

Hi! I have a question about The Great I’m hoping you could help answer. I was confused which season of the show Catherine actually started to love Peter back. Because the writing was so exaggerated/ satirical it made it hard to understand if she was still leading him on that she did like him when she really did not yet, versus when she actually did? Would you say it was written in S2 or S3 that she did start love him and wasn’t continuing to just say that to him?
oh, I think she loves Peter back all the way back in season 1, but has no desire whatsoever to admit to it
the bizarre thing is, in the finale, when Peter is insisting things like, "when a woman wants to kill you, that means you're in business" is that he's RIGHT in this case. Catherine DOES love him back-- even if she does mean to kill him.
it's not like there is a definitive moment where she falls in love with him-- it's in little moments, like when they are in the bath tub talking and he says "toosh...ay" or when they are at the peace summit with the Swedes and he asks how she knew to say all those things to him, and she says, quite honestly, "because you are my husband", and later he says "I know I don't talk in my sleep" -- they have an understanding and an intimacy that forms despite the terrible, terrible start. There is a tenderness there despite the murder. And, Catherine actually really, really does enjoy having sex with him in season 1-- the tongue trick is a moment of dreadful realization for her because it's the moment she realizes she is attracted to him, oh dear. and she IS affected by it, very sincerely, when he proves he knows her well enough to bring her Voltaire for her birthday, and then delivers that speech. That's probably the first moment she realizes that Peter actually knows her back.
anyway, the fun and wonderful thing about the show is that Catherine can love him and also seek to overthrow him; that whole bit about how "if I don't kill you, you could never respect me nor love me" is sooooooo spot on.
And Peter has a fascinating point that she sacrifices Leo with barely any hesitation, but she can't/won't actually do that to Peter.
Catherine seems very sane, but she is actually even more insane than Peter in many (most?) ways, which makes them so well-suited to each other.

fun fact the inspiration for haladriel was based on peter and catherine from the great the directors told me this themselves
furthermore haladriel spuffy and ghoulcy are all tethered in ways i cannot explain (the director also confirmed this)
