Supercorp Fanfic Pet-peeves - “Oh my Rao”

I love you, fanfic authors! You put so much effort and time into creating stories!! ...that I binge read in a fraction of the time it took you to write them.

But sometimes, there are things that take me out of a story... 

And this is one of them.

Whenever Kara is written to say “Oh my Rao” ....it just sounds / reads wrong (to me). 

Rao is not the Kryptonian translation of the word “God”.  If you want to take it as a literal translation, it actually “means” sun, or rather, it’s the name of Krypton’s sun. It is also the name of one of Krypton’s gods - Kryptonians have many gods (a polytheism).  Rao is just their equivalent of Zeus or Odin or Jupiter or Dagda... their main God. Or like Roman’s mythology’s “Sol” who is the Sun-God, where we derive anything “solar” from.

So, Rao is a name. Like Jesus. So, where “Oh, Jesus!” be correct, “Oh, Rao!” would suffice as well. On that note, the exclamation “Holy Rao!” would be legitimate.

Or if you want a more every day language example: If you talk about a person in their function or concept, you talk about “my girlfriend” but once you talk about them by name you wouldn’t add “my” (unless you are talking to someone who happens to have a presumably different girlfriend by the same name... or you are Lena in the comics). 

But to top it off: 

Kara keeps saying “Oh my God” in the show. 

...a lot, and many a time when she doesn’t have to pretend to be average human-Kara.

...just a few examples. I swear, there was once a supercut of Kara saying “oh my God” in the first couple of seasons on yt, but I can’t find it anymore... And, yes, she did once or twice exclaim “Rao!” in it / in the show.

And I believe, there is a general reason that may go beyond Kara trying to fit in and therefore using a common English phrase...

Kara spent the first 12 years (half of her life), her informative years on Krypton, where their religion and science played a major role in their society and culture. 

Like Kara still hardly ever curses on Earth, even though she had spent over a decade here and got influenced by the American language and attitude to some degrees, something tells me, it is against her nature to use Rao’s name in vain (too much).

The thing is, we don’t really need to “kryptonize” anything or everything. 

“Oh my God”, “Golly”, “Rao!”, “Holy pancakes!”, “Shit..ake mushroom!”,  ... there is a long list of viable options that neither break canon nor have Kara go OOC. 

Sooo... I am not asking anyone to go back into their already written stories or wips and change this to humor me.

But I hope this may make you reconsider the usage of the phrase moving forward. Or stick with it. Your choice. I’m not your mom.

earlier today i told an acquaintance in passing that i'll often be in the middle of a novel and think "man i wish this shit were more ambiguous" and had to reiterate twice that i wasn't being sarcastic before they believed me, so this post is to say: i love when writers don't bother to explain everything, i love when stories end uncertain and unsettling, i love being required to think as a reader, i love when stuff makes no damn sense, no i'm not kidding

sorry idk but the way the world is so fast and the people in it still want it to be faster is sooo annoying to me. people groaning while standing in line for 3 minutes people being mad the train ride is gonna take 2 hours people complaining that the bus is a few minutes late people being angry that construction work is taking months even though it used to take decades. don't you see the world is already so so so fast in every single aspect can't you understand that being mad will do nothing and just make your mood worse. enjoy the moments of stillness you're given. just stand in line and look at the people around you. sit on the train and watch the scenery. you'll get there.

My biggest Tumblr pet-peeves and dislikes

Here's a list of shit that Tumblr has done that makes me hate it just that little bit more:

Deleting a side-blog deletes your main blog for some reason due to buggy code. You have to "leave" the sideblog to delete it instead.

Turning the UI into Twitter. Yeah, no thank you!

Trans peoples' posts (selfies n such) are being flagged as "inappropriate" even when no such inappropriate content is there. (i.e. transphobia)

Weird changes to dashboard and reblogs.

Refusing to listen to feedback. (to be fair, they aren't unique in this stance, but still!)

Weird "processing your post" notifications at the bottom of the screen that pop up whenever your reblog or queue a post.

Previous tags/reblogs are now inaccessible without XKit and on the mobile app for some reason.

There's probably hundreds more reasons, so feel free to suggest them in the notes.

Actually this has to be its own post, I hate how people treat the moral of the ugly duckling tale like it’s “don’t worry you’ll grow up to be beautiful”

no!!! It was never an ugly duckling because it was never a duck!!! It was a baby swan!!! A cygnet!!! It was never ugly to begin with!!! People only thought it was ugly because they were judging it by their own standards!!!! The moral is that you aren’t ugly, people just don’t see you as you are!!!!

wolfy this might be a stupid question but what's the difference between an animatic and an animation

Animation is like. Smoother? I guess. Animatic is the rougher version of it, like a draft. It usually has mostly the key poses and maybe some breakdown poses, but when you start inbetweening (poses in between frames to smoothen the action) it starts getting into the realm of animation

What's funny is a lot of animatics on YouTube aren't really the industry definition of an animatic, they're so much more defined and polished that animatics you see in pre production. Mostly because those on yt are already the final works, while pre prod animatics are like preliminaries for before the animation

No because the way I get so VISCERALLY angry when someone refers to an animal as albino when they’re actually leucistic, erythristic, or xanthochromatic is both deeply irrational and greatly unhealthy

ALBINISM

Total loss of melanin in the body, i.e. skin, hair/fur/feathers, and eyes (the eyes look pink/red because the lack of melanin in the eye exposes the blood vessels within it to light, which then reflects their red hue)

LEUCISM

Partial loss of melanin in the body; the pattern of melanin distribution is unique in each case, so some people or animals with this condition may have patches of typically-colored skin/hair/fur in addition to pigmented eyes, while others may only have the aforementioned ocular pigmentation

ERYTHRISM

Abnormal prevalence of reddish pigment in the skin/hair/fur/feathers of an animal; concentration of this pigment varies case by case, so humans/animals with the condition can present anywhere from only slightly pink to intensely red in color; to my knowledge, the condition does not affect the eyes

XANTHOCHROMISM

Abnormal prevalence of yellow pigment in the skin/hair/fur/feathers of an animal; similar to erythrism, color intensity can vary from light golden hues to deep yellows; again, to my knowledge, the condition does not affect the eyes

simon doesn't have any preference when it comes to food. to him, it's more of "i just need to fill my stomach for now" instead of whatever it is people were yapping about palate and cuisine. he doesn't really care, food is food. that being said, of course certain things he will have to push away.

dairy gets him a little rumbly, unfortunately. not to the extend that he would be hurting madly, just enough to get his stomach rumbling. bananas are too mushy and tastes odd, but he'd still eat it (he will just shove it down as quick as possible, the case with yogurt too). he's not a big fan of garlic as well, but he'll eat if it's a little. something about a massive amount of garlic and his mask doesn't really mix well together.

still, of course, everything changes when you're cooking it.

he finds himself slowly getting better at... well, slowing down. you made food for him, taking the time to cook something you thought he'd enjoy. the least he could do is to just sit down and savor everything before shoving it down his throat.

simon loved your garlic bread. it stinks his breath because you used a lot of garlic, even rubbing some of the raw garlic on it because you loved it so much. he didn't mind, just means he'll have to brush his teeth really well. your pastas were also amazing too, and he'd have to make sure to brush his teeth really well before wearing his mask again every time you dropped it off for his lunch.

you made the tasties banana bread. just the subtle hint of sweetness that compliments his tea well. moist, just like the banana pancakes you make once a week. sometimes he even forgot that it has bananas in it.

simon didn't think that he's into soy milk, some smells a little funky if not processed correctly, but the one you made? he'd guzzle it down, maybe asking for seconds, especially after he knows how labor-intensive the process is.

he loves you, and the fact that you took the time out of the day to cook him something? of course it would be wrong to not savor it. and those things that he would normally avoid? he doesn't think about it much anymore. as long as you made it, he likes it.
