Confusion's Octopath Traveler 2 Headcanons Masterlist that I'm getting out into the world a day before the game's release right before the canon makes it impossible for them to happen

Agnea is insanely good at handstands. Partitio, half drunk, once asked her to do a handstand on a chair, which she did, and then proceeded to shock the rest of the group by removing one hand from the chair and slowly placing it behind her back. Everyone was freaking out

Osvald doodles in his books. They're usually little faces of his deceased wife and daughter (followed by the words "I love you" or "I miss you very much"), but there are sometimes messy doodles of flowers and even some of the other travelers. The other travelers once found one of the books with these drawings in it. Osvald had forgotten to draw Paritio's hat in one doodle, and the group promptly mistook him for Temenos

Throné sings lullabies when she can't fall asleep. She sings very sweetly, but she has threatened all who have heard her sing out of embarrassment. Her audiences are usually herself or the occasional stray animal she finds out on the streets

Hikari loves birds. The birds also love him back. He once tried to feed a few and ended up attracting an entire flock, resulting on him being covered in birds and feathers, which made it extremely difficult to walk around

Temenos Does Not swear in front of kids. The other travelers found out when he stubbed his toe in a room full of children. After it happened, he simply stared at the ground before shouting "FUDGE" very loudly, sending the other travelers into a fit of laughter

Ochette doesn't eat chocolate. No one knows why. It could be because of her canine features. It could simply be because she doesn't like it. When asked, Ochette simply shrugs and responds that she doesn't know either

Castti has Everything in her apothecary satchel. Everything. People think the "take out all your weapons. *watches them take out one weapon* all of them *watches them take out the rest of their weapons*" person is Throné or Ochette. Wrong. It's Castti. No one has ever questioned her about the blade sharpening rock in her satchel. No one knows how Castti can lug the small but heavy rock in her satchel all day. No one truly knows how much her satchel can hold. No one will ever know.

The other travelers once made a joke about Partitio's last name. Once when they were traveling in the Winterlands, they saw him wearing a purple scarf, and they proceeded to call him Partitio Purplewil for the rest of the day

Ochette has a special whistling pattern when she calls for each of her creature companions. Over time, she also made one for each of the other travelers. Now, whenever each of the travelers hears their specific whistling pattern, they'll know what Ochette is calling for them. This is especially great if people get lost in a crowd. Unfortunately, no one has made a whistle pattern for Ochette yet

Castti bakes a lot. Due to her experience with her concoctions, she knows how the chemical compounds work and can make all sorts of fancy desserts. Whenever Ochette makes something, Castti is quick to follow up with a small cake or pudding. She also makes really good hot chocolate

Throné likes to have quiet tea sessions with her fellow travelers. She used to do it with a few friends during breaks as she found it relaxing. Now, she can quietly sip on her tea and engage in conversations with the other travelers. From time to time, she enjoys these sessions on her own. Those sessions are her do not disturb times. If anyone does disturb her, Throné will be very sure that there will be consequences

Osvald memorises at least one sentence of every book he's ever used for his research. It's not necessarily the first or last sentence, it's just any random sentence in the book. Once, one of the travelers was reading a book out loud. Osvald, upon recognising a sentence, asked "is that 'A History of the Winterlands'?" without even looking up from his current read. From that moment onwards, no one dared to question his memory again

Partitio likes stargazing. In his younger days, he used to stay up to stare at the stars in the sky until his parents told him to go to bed. To this day, it's a small hobby that he continues to do when he's finished with a long day of work, or when he can't fall asleep. He can recognise some of the stars, and constantly points them out to the other travelers

Agnea is really good at tying and untying knots. The knots she makes are always secure, and no matter how impossible it seems to untie a knot, Agnea can always get it undone. At first, no one knew why this was the case, or how she managed to learn this skill. The answer soon became clear when the travelers found her trying to untie a knot in one of the ribbons she used to tie her hair

Temenos sleeps with one eye open at all times. No one knows why. They all found out one morning when they found Temenos sitting asleep at a table with one eye open. They started a conversation thinking he was awake the whole time until he actually woke up and proceeded to scare the living hell out of all of them. Someone once asked him if he could see in his sleep. Temenos' answer to that question was simply to shrug and to walk away

Hikari likes folding origami cranes. It was something he used to do a lot as a child to pass the time. Now, whenever he's bored and has a piece of paper in front of him, he starts absentmindedly folding the little paper cranes and handing them to the nearest traveler. Each traveler has at least 20 of these

I love how in the movie everyone was in their gay divorce arc except maya and claudine

YES. LIKE. EVERYONE WAS DIVORCING EACH OTHER WHILE MAYA AND CLAUDINE WERE JUST. DOING WHATEVER THE HECK THEIR REVUE WAS.

When THOSE scene happened in the kaoruko and futaba revue me and my sister were losing our shit. Like. There is no straight explanation for anything that was happening in that revue and the others in general. Nothing. I know that futaba and kaoruko being those positions probably means something other than 'they're gay', I know it does, but my GOD THESE BITCHES GAY. Also at the beginning when claudine was being a gambler and kaoruko a dealer, kaoruko saying she ruined her sweets box, saying she ruined it and poisoned it, and then says 'your the reason that we...' and then futaba (literally) breaks into the scene a few moments later and says that their friendship was like a box of sweets all imply that kaoruko is blaming claudine for their divorce. I love it.

The revue of hunting was just. God. Nana saying junna was bright, nana asking where her junna was and that she was beautiful, junna saying that the words she quotes inspire and move her while to nana they mean nothing, Junna finally finding her own words and saying that she will finally become the protagonist and then the last part where they're going toward the next stage, moving on from the starlights they did in seisho and everything else, nana crying and saying that she was a liar and that junna is still bright, junna not going back to comfort her and nana wiping away her own tears and both of them calling each other by their full names killed me.

That entire revue was just an Experience for me. I love nana a lot so seeing her just be THAT in the entire movie and revue made me so so insane. Nana ilysm but :(

Karen and hikari was the biggest divorce in the movie ofc. Karen worked so hard to just do one play with hikari, but now that she did it, what else can she do? She finally did starlight with hikari. Hikari did the same, but she always loved the stage, so she knew what to do next, to go to the next one. But karen didnt. She doesnt know what to do. Without hikari she isnt a stage girl. Literally. Once hikari leaves her she wont have a purpose on the stage, she is nothing. So instead of something like hikari helping karen find her new purpose for the stage, she just helps by telling her which direction she should go to find her next purpose by herself, then everyone throwing away the cloaks that the giraffe gave them except for karen meaning that they found their next stage and at the end they show karen about to audition for something and her cloak finally flying away meaning she found a new purpose and reason for the stage just. Yeah. They sure are that, huh?

Maya and claudine. These bitches. When I finished kaoruko and futaba's revue, i told my sister, "if this is kaoruko and futaba, what's maya and claudine going to be?" And after junnanna, I said, "that was the gayest one so far, wonder if maya and claudine can top it," AND THEY DID. They didnt do any of those positions the other guys did but the things they said? Oohhhh boy. It beats a confession by anyone.

The subs I watched are different to the ones some people watched I think but the implications still stand. Maya and claudine's revue begins with them acting out a play. (Also can I say that claudine's voice and outfit was TOP NOTCH AMAZING AT THIS PART. HER VOICE AND FIT OOZES WITH SMUG I LOVE IT) claudine and maya make a deal, implying that claudine is the devil and that maya is a pure and innocent person wrapped in the devil's finger. Things happen, blah blah blah, and maya tells her that she cannot steal her soul because she has none, she is a vessel for the gods and gets an outfit change, she wears all white and a fancy gown that's clearly suppose to be a swan, contrasting claudine's black attire. the part where they're fighting as other people from other countries, rivals in history, they say (in the subs I was watching) something along the lines of "a hero is nothing without trials and a saint is nothing without temptation." Maya is clearly the saint at that part, with claudine asking her to make a deal with her like the devil, maya plays a lot of lead roles, which is usually the hero, so maya is the hero. A hero cant be a hero without trials, if they are a hero, what will prove it? A saint cannot be a saint without temptation, what proves they are a saint without it? So if that's what the questions are, what proves that maya is amazing?

It's claudine. Claudine is her trials, claudine is her temptation, without claudine maya has no proof she is amazing.

Then at the end, instead of one of them being on top of the other like the other guys, they are lying down on the ground at the same area, they are both finally on equal ground.

Okay but on a more serious note, I genuinely have to once more thank you for sharing your work with us.

I've sent an insane amount of Asks to you these past few weeks; at least, insane considering how rarely I generally send Asks, and how you're the only person I've sent more than two to.

Fanfiction has been a pivotal part of my life for as long as I can remember myself, and I find that it's an incredible way to, among other things, express your love for a piece of media, to make friends with people in the same community and give back to the fandom, to practice and hone your writing, and most importantly, to have fun.

It's very soothing to have a comfort read that perfectly encapsulates my thoughts and feelings on these characters and on the world that Kishi has carefully crafted but, in the same breath, basically wasted, in a fandom that I feel like so often misunderstands the point.

There are many fandoms I've been in, thousands of fics I've read, millions and millions of words consumed in the past three-four years, and hundreds of literary works (both fanfiction and not) that have, in some way or another, left their mark on me.

But Kizuna Hikari has always stood out to me the most. Maybe that sounds unbelievable. Out of all the beautifully written works I've read (the number of those is actually astronomical), I'd still pick kh over every single one of the works that have ever pierced my soul?

Yes. I can't put it into words, exactly, but there's a feeling that engulfs me every time I think about it that is so unique in its warmth.

Both because I especially love Naruto, multiple flaws and all, and because this story hits every mark that it's aiming for dead-on.

Not very many stories can achieve that.

Most fanfiction, no matter how gorgeous, or well-written, or enthralling, or in character, feels like fanfiction. This of course doesn't have any effect on how much I love it; the vast majority of the time, I long for that exact feeling of a fanmade work infused with copious amounts of the author's love and passion for their creation. It doesn't matter that it's fanfiction.

But there's a degree of believability in kh that brings about a different type of comfort.

Naruto's ending sucked. It makes me miserable to think about it. The Naruto fandom, for a fandom that insists on the show's greatness, collectively misses the point of an alarming amount of the story's arcs, characters, and overall essence in a way that has me seriously concerned for the world's media literacy.

But kh is so concentrated on, and deeply rooted in, the realistic depiction of a differing outcome and the consistently in-character portrayal of Naruto and Sasuke and their simple, but still incredibly complicated, relationship, without either of their ideals and convictions taking the backseat in the name of conventional romance; romance that also just doesn't fit these characters.

It's been three years since I first read it, and it continues to be equally wholly satisfying, and provides me with what I initially didn't even know was the idyllic, fleshed out exploration of the events following that final battle that I needed.

It also helps that I relate to/crave and ache for the, in my eyes, inherently queer type of love/attraction that exists between your Naruto and Sasuke way more than that of any other romantic love story that I've ever known.

In other words, the meticulous planning, loving effort, and skillful writing that make up your story have bewitched me, body and soul.

Wow, this took a direction I couldn't have foreseen. I only started this rant to whine about missing the YAOI acronym

i'm not really a headcanon guy, i just perceive characters and understand them. but i do have the headcanon that mahiru saw revolutionary girl utena as a child and it changed her brain chemistry

7. what is one thing you wish could have been handled differently storywise?

i talked a lot about this in previous answers so i'll just say that i wish seiran was more involved with the big events in starira recently. i know they are stageplay characters first and everything else second but they are so dear to me and the only way to learn more about them is basically watching the stage plays and it saddens me bc not many people do that

14. if you had to pitch revue starlight to someone, how would you do it?

answered but let's try a less vague one:

i think you could recommend revstar to anyone who likes magical girl shows and idol anime, since it has some things in common with both while being its own unique, never-done-before thing and that's what makes it so thrilling to experience. revstar's director, tomohiro furukawa has worked under kunihiko ikuhara (director of revolutionary girl utena) on titles such as yuri kuma arashi and mawaru penguindrum and you can definitely see the effects of that, but at the same time, toppy-san's surrealism has its own flavor that is distinct of ikuni's.

revstar loves taking character archetypes and dynamics you are used to seeing in other anime and then it kicks them around for fun. the main pair seems like a common sun/moon dynamic but the more you learn about them the more you realize that could not be further from the truth. it's so so fun to dig deeper into all those characters by rewatching the anime and seeing all the details you missed the first time around, understanding character motivations you didn't. all the insert songs in the anime are incredibly well-composed with a lot of love behind them (case and point - revue starlight unlimited movie music budget), and they expand on the character singing it flawlessly.

the tv anime was on a really tight budget to the point that for the few last episodes they literally had to hire people from overseas to help them finish it but the end result is truly a labor of love that comforts me every time i watch it. it also wouldn't be an overexagerration to say it fundamentally changed my life. it's just good. oh and its also yuri. okay i'm done rambling

15. what do you like about revue starlight?

basically everything i just rambled about sdsgdsgh but uhh yeah. EVERYTHING. the story, the messages, the music, the animation of the stage fights, the characters, the visuals and symbolism, how much it contributed to my overall knowledge about theater and theater history, how it made me interested in other "classics" (totally did not watch rose of versailles after starira did the collab), how it made me appreciate my own creative expressions, how it made me appreciate hard work and effort and striving for more, but also how it comforts me when i fall and tells me to stand back up. i love how varied the franchise is with its anime, manga (which i'm still yet to read *sweats*), video game, stage plays, reader's theaters and so on. there is clearly so much love poured into it from both the creators and the actresses themselves and it just makes me glow every time i engage with anything revstar-related.

except relive gameplay <3 i hope i can get myself to uninstall soon. but the story IS amazing and should be experienced by everyone and you can do that without actually downloading relive onto your mobile devices!!! yay!!!

Worshipping Flesh

Quite the confronting title, I know. But I don't use the terms "worshipping" and "flesh" lightly. You can probably guess that this post will be about a mangaka in the ero-guro (erotic-grotesque) scene, a world that is both filthy and alluring in its subject matter and visual storytelling.

Hanawa Kazuichi is an infamous ero-guro mangaka known for his Japanese period pieces, debuting in Garo in 1971. His stories frequently feature extremely confronting sexual and violent imagery, many focusing on the decadence of the upper-class. He's up there with Maruo Suehiro as being one of the most recognisable faces of the ero-guro manga movement, with each iconic mangaka standing out in their own ways. They've even collaborated on an artbook called "Muzane" (Cruel Pictures), imitating the "28 Famous Murders" series done by Yoshiiku and Yoshitoshi, two Ukiyo-e masters. When I think ero-guro, my mind always goes to Maruo and Hanawa for their insanely detailed drawings and raw stories.

Although, Hanawa has quite some range because he's also done some fantasy and supernatural works along with his iconic ero-guro. One of his most well known series that won multiple awards is titled "Keimusha no Naka" (Doing Time), and was published in English by Ponent Mon in 2006. It's an autobiographical story of his time in prison for his possession of illegal firearms, a sentence that lasted for 3 years. Once he got out of jail, he started serialising in AX and gained recognition for his compelling story.

A Blossoming Love

Coming back to the whole idea of the "worshipping of flesh", I want to talk about one of his short stories in his "Tsuki no Hikari" (Moonlight) collection. The edition I have collects 9 stories from his career in a beautiful deep blue tankobon, mainly made up of ero-guro with some other types of stories sprinkled in. The story in question is titled "The Tabernacle of Flesh". What a name.

To reference Merriam-Webster for some definitions, a tabernacle is:

"a house of worship/specifically: a large building or tent used for evangelist services"

There are other definitions of it in the context of the Bible, but I personally don't know enough about the religious background of this word so I'll be using the general definition above. The story itself doesn't touch upon any religious topics either, so equating the word with "a house of worship" should suffice.

So with such an in-your-face title, what could the story actually be about? In terms of Hanawa's works, "The Tabernacle of Flesh" lines up very closely with his other distinct period pieces, with many centred on love, betrayal and violence. The story opens up with our main character Orin, a woman recounting the time her friend Gyakujiro had organised an arranged marriage for her with Momohiko. This story had happened 3 years ago, so the chapter is essentially the main character's confession to the reader. She had to take care of the sickly Momohiko constantly as he suffered from an unknown disease that left him bedridden. As we get settled into the story with Orin's narration, we're given a line on the fourth page that spells out the imminent doom she would be getting into.

"If I had known what was to happen to me, I wouldn't have done it. And now it was too late." - Orin

Over time, Orin had developed genuine feelings for Momohiko. Maybe it was her constant care for him that made her feel this way. She said that at the time, she would have even been fine with dying for him. But besides her love for Momohiko, what plagued her even more was his sickness. Nothing seemed to get better, but Gyakujiro had a secret solution...

The following two pages are brutal. Orin's sister, killed by her own hands. A random schoolboy, slashed in an 'accident'. How could this help Momohiko at all? Gyakujiro doesn't tell her, but Orin does as he says out of her immense love for Momohiko.

"Killing one person is the same as killing two or five or a hundred." - Gyakujiro

Orin continues to lure and kill more innocent people, hiding their bodies around the house. Flesh, flesh, flesh. That's all she was told she needed to get, so she continued killing for the sake of her husband.

Betrayal

Time skips to Orin's tenth murder. So far, Momohiko has not been given any dialogue and remains stone-faced throughout the story. When will we get anymore information on what he's going through? Soon enough, after Orin's tenth victim, she had spotted a suggestive silhouette on a wall. She realised that Gyakujiro and Momohiko were in love. Getting Orin to kill all these people was Gyakujiro's plan to save Momohiko from his disease because the cure was apparently human flesh. It seems like the disease is one that is somewhat supernatural/fantastical, which you can see from the various bloody holes scattered across Momohiko's body. They spewed blood, implying that Momohiko needed other people's flesh to substitute for his own, his body somehow lacking the flesh needed to contain his blood.

"Gyakujiro, I've had enough of this life as a fake couple. I can no longer stand the stench of that dumb hag's hair..." - Momohiko "A little patience, my little Momohiko. Soon, you'll be completely healed. Then we can get rid of her and live happily together. Until then, let's be careful and let her continue her crimes. You require human flesh. It is the only remedy for your illness." - Gyakujiro

The Climax

After witnessing this heart breaking scene, Orin took her chance to strike. We immediately cut to the situation later that night, and are given some insight into her mental state:

"As I'm running out of pages, here's what happened: that same evening, I slaughtered them in their sleep. I took a razor made in Germany and spilled buckets of their blood. They died on the spot. Serves them right! Hi hi hi!" - Orin

Her rage had consumed her and resulted in the bloody deaths of both men. But the story doesn't end there. Still unsatisfied after killing both of them, Orin decided to cut off the flesh from Momohiko's behind and eat it. The obsession with flesh transitioned from being motivated to protect Momohiko to being driven by hatred. The house truly became a 'tabernacle' over time. Everything had to do with flesh, in all senses of the word. Flesh as in human meat, flesh with a sexual insinuation, flesh as sustenance. The house that the story was based in was literally littered with flesh as Orin's victims decomposed in the background, waiting to be used by Momohiko. We're never shown what he actually did with the bodies, but from Orin's actions at the end of the story, we can assume that it was also cannibalistic in nature.

"For three years I had let these two men manipulate me. My life has been completely destroyed/Since the Lapis Lazuli disease caused by the Lapis bacteria, is contagious." - Orin's final lines

After everything she had to go through, Orin had died from the same disease that Momohiko had: the mysterious Lapis Lazuli disease. On the bottom right corner of the ending page, a note states that it was an incident that happened in the Spring of 1902. This fictitious disease had spread from Momohiko to Orin, which you can see from the same bloody holes that are all over her body, limp in a dramatic pose.

Hanawa's drawings really elevate the experience of reading this story. It reads like a theatre production, with the narration and dramatic poses giving you the feeling of watching a play. The transition from love to pure hatred, coupled with the insane and climactic consumption of flesh by Orin, was intense and raw. The drama and tension remained high throughout the entire story. With the plot being completely driven by flesh for all characters, you're left feeling both disgusted and enraptured, a telling sign of a strong ero-guro story.

Borders

To end off this post, I want to put a spotlight on Hanawa's art, specifically the way he experiments with borders and backgrounds.

I've never seen this sort of experimentation before in manga. His panel borders are incredibly diverse and make the central visual pop. I feel it also adds to the theatre-like nature of his stories, dramatising the panel and heightening its impact. This is even more so with the expressive ukiyo-e styled character designs in a lot of his works, each panel pretty much a painting in itself.

His backgrounds as well give all his pages such a strong aesthetic where you'll pretty much recognise his work just by seeing these pictures. The story itself is quite straightforward, but I think that the main appeal of "The Tabernacle of Flesh" is the shock factor, all supported by these unique artistic choices Hanawa is making. I wanted to point this out so more people could appreciate uniqueness like this in manga.

But I gotta say, I think Kagami would gravitate to the show. I just think she'd resonate with the anime with the swordfighting wlw who all aim to be the top star. She'd like that I think. She'd especially like Maya, getting how Maya always held herself to a perfect standard until her rival (who happens to be part french btw) managed to beat her and convince her to be herself instead. I just think Kagami would get that.

Luka, I think, would be all over it too. He's constantly going on about how music can reveal a person's heart, and revue starlight definitely runs with that idea, with the revue songs having the characters reveal their most honest and vulnerable feelings. Actually he'd love musicals in general now that I think about it. He'd definitely see himself in Nana, with how she watches over everyone from the background, but then episode 7 happens and he very much doesn't think he's similar to Nana anymore but like, Second Chance you know? The connection is there.

The movie has a bunch of references to other films, so Nino may like those. But then again, Nino is a bit of an amateur so they'd likely go over his head, just like with me. At the very least, he’d appreciate the visual spectacle of the revues. As for his favorite, my gut says Mahiru since he dealt with similar feelings of jealousy and worries that he's inadequate compared to others in Rocketear and Anasai respectively, but the truth dictates that his favorite character is Nana, so I'm gonna go with that instead, i mean she too is a sort of a director with some control freak tendancies.

As for Alya, she likes superheroes so she’d probably like the overdramatic fights that clash each stage girl’s ideals and philosophies, even if there is no clear cut justice in the fights. I’d say she’d probably root for the underdogs like Futaba and Mahiru, but especially Junna.

Sabrina thinks that she and Chloe are like Futaba and Kaoruko, but no, they’re not. Chloe doesn’t have the love that Kaoruko has for Futaba, and Sabrina doesn’t have the self determination of Futaba. 

Marinette, especially post guardianship, would very much see herself in Hikari. Like how she tries to take the burden of everyone's struggles and tries to deal with the stage of fate alone because she's the only one who knows what becoming the top star means. Marinette would empathize is all im saying. And the way that was resolved, with Karen still coming back for Hikari even when Karen kept getting pushed away, I just think Marinette would appreciate that too, like when she lost the miracle box but everyone was still there for her.

Adrien probably really likes the banana puns, but realistically I think what would draw Adrien to the show is just the passion each of them have towards being an actor. Like Adrien is pretty apathetic towards most of the work he does for his father. He doesn't really want to be a model and he's always glad to ditch most of his bookings when there's an akuma attack going on to interrupt it. But despite that, he always tries to help his friend’s projects. He’s been an actor in Nino’s various movies and is always willing to model for Marinette’s work or Kagami’s art. He likes being able to help his friends, that’s part of it yes, but it’s because his friends are passionate about what they’re making and he wants to help them with that. Adrien himself doesn’t really know exactly what he wants to do yet, which is why I think he feels drawn to passionate people who know what they want. It’s why he fell in love with Ladybug when she stood up to Hawkmoth in front of the whole city. As for his favorite, he’s a romantic and likes being overdramatic, so I could see Karen being his favorite. Especially because of her 12 year long promise to perform starlight with Hikari. He’d like that kind of devotion I think.

So yeah, in conclusion, watch revue starlight. it’s good and the miraculous characters like it so you should try it too.

That's what rewatches are for 👍 I was so interested in Karen and Hikari on my first watch that I couldn't find it in me to care about anyone else and it's only a few weeks later that I was like "They weren't lying Nana IS a cool character. Maya and Claudine ARE an insane ship." I personally think it's fun that even after watching a show in its entirety you can always go back to it and fall in love with something or someone new instead of just watching it once and forgetting about it. It also helps that each character has one or more dedicated episodes so they don't all blend together in your head.

Remembered that with Confidants comes the insane amount of skills Hikari learns which fits into the Octopath Traveler II base game and "Learned Skills" thing.

At the same time though it is incredibly hilarious if we just decide that Hikari just knows a fuck ton of things and everyone just keeps on getting surprised by it. Doesn't mean he's better at doing things as an expert but he is going to be able to do something.

He knows how to make coffee, has intimate knowledge on the law, knows how to use a sword, he (reluctantly) knows how to shoot a gun, he knows how to sew, he knows medical knowledge, he knows how to do basic dance styles, he knows how to barter.

The list goes on and I like to think that Ritsu, Kazan, and Rai Mei all just sort of go "Oh no he was always like that. One time he saw something about snakes and learned so much about them and how to handle them when he was 10. Then he brought a snake and Kazan refused to get out of the bathroom for 20 minutes until it left."

The way he learns them too just ranges from "Gil taught me how to make coffee since it's part of the job description and soon I started making it more complicated as I got better at it. It's fun and it helps me relax" to "When we were younger Kazan paid me, Rai Mei, and Ritsu $20 each to help him study for the yearly bar exam . Jin Mei also paid us $20 to help him study so I guess I absorbed two sets of information?" to "I got bored so I decided to learn basic AP physics"

Incorporating that into Hikari's personality in general is so fun. Hikari knows all and scares people with his knowledge. He knows a ton of weapons (which impress/scare everyone) and I imagine he's watched a ton of videos of people using weapons he's never had his hand on so he gets good at it lmao. He watches someone make a recipe once and almost flawlessly replicates it. It's unclear if its due to memory or he just has a bunch of skill he got from fixating on it and wanting to learn new things.

Jin Mei paying them to help him study is also hilarious. Random thoughts that Hikari might be a good navigator in analyzing enemies weaknesses but he is too much of a fighting asset I feel like I can imagine him trying out navigation at some point.

the hikaris are the main characters and i can’t really decide whether i want yb and atem to be separate characters but i’d like ym to Actually Be an alter and come out when malik gets really angry or scared. i do think it would be funnier if yb and atem were sharing ryou and yugi’s bodies so i’ll keep that. don’t know if i want to treat them as alters or spirits though because it would be interesting to explore how ym feels about not being a spirit like the others and also how atem and yb interact with the spirits they encounter, but it would also be interesting to explore alters interacting with each other... it’s a work in progress. also assume yb and tkb are the same person here and that the zorcfluence has long been pulled out of him, if he’s a spirit then way before ryou encounters him

anyway ryou would catch wind of ghost rumors on the forums he browses online (he does have a computer after all) and he comes to class excited to talk about the ghost rumor he heard last night and either jounouchi or anzu or honda would be like “oh yeah i heard about that, kinda spooky huh”, and ryou insists on checking it out but no one wants to go with him until yugi agrees to go because he’d like to get to know ryou better and also because he thinks it’ll give him some respect points in the class LOL

malik’s probably half-listening because he’s doing his own thing (oh yeah he is part of their class in this au) and yugi comes up to him and asks if he wants to check out the rumor with him and ryou. malik thinks about it and he’s like “hm idk i’m sure isis and rishid will worry if i stay out too late” but he’s also dealing with his phobia of the dark and he doesn’t want to mention that. but ryou manages to convince him to at least hang out with them until sunset and then they’ll walk him home, and so malik finally agrees hesitantly because hey at least it’s not the dark!

Unfortunately For Them shenanigans ensue, and for this first rumor it’s at their school so i imagine they get trapped because of supernatural influence and malik is Freaking Out and yugi is also Freaking Out and ryou’s like “guys don’t worry people say this is normal ^__^” and malik and yugi are like “ARE YOU INSANE???” and i imagine they get so freaked out after a while that ym and atem have to take over for them and they scold ryou for being careless but they do their best to help find a way out. i imagine yb is bristling cause he’s tired of sitting around and waiting for something to happen so he forces ryou out and now all the yamis are here yeahhhh

eventually they do encounter the spirit but they find out it’s a harmless spirit who likes to play pranks on students who stay after school after hours and yb is like “well damn that was boring, i could have been working on my monster world stuff” and ym and atem are a little irritated but relieved that it wasn’t anything bad but that they’d like ryou to apologize to malik and yugi. and so ryou comes back and tells them he feels really really bad he dragged them into this and he can’t bear to be with them anymore so he immediately runs away after apologizing a lot, and malik is still a little irritated but not as irritated because after yugi talks it out with him they both agree ryou didn’t purposefully want to get them into trouble

after that night things calm down between them and ryou does try to avoid talking to them for a bit because he feels really ashamed and scared that they hate him for the encounter but they tell him it’s okay and that he should just Not Try To Explore Any More Rumors because that was a lot to deal with! and ryou agrees but... a few days later he starts talking about another rumor and yugi and malik are like Oh Boy, but ryou’s like “oh it’s okay i’ll go alone this time, don’t worry about me!” but in the back of their heads malik and yugi are like dude i know something’s going to happen but they don’t mention anything to ryou and instead make plans to watch over ryou just to make sure nothing bad happens to him

this goes on for a few rumors until one day ryou gets caught up in something Very Insane and ryou gets spirited away and malik and yugi are like omfg. omfg. and they tell the rest of the group and so everyone goes out looking for ryou. eventually they do find ryou and they’re like oh my god ryou are you okay?! and ryou says something along the lines of “they were lonely... it would have hurt to leave them alone” and then they learn that ryou is really... really lonely and that’s why he was spirited away because the spirit and him resonated with each other and yb’s like please don’t fucking do that ever again!

i have sooo much more i’d like to write about but this is already too long and i have work to do sigh... i’d love to explore malik and yugi’s and the yamis’ characters once i learn more about them in the manga so that i can build upon them more in this au

And opposites attract! (Wait are we gonna see Hayate being a suspicious older brother over this? Imagine him worrying his sister could end up being a teen mom, and Astral being like uhhhhhh that's not how it works?)

There's gonna be one person who just doesn't like him, or alternatively one person who doesn't like the group or a member of the group and therefore picks on Astral too. A weird oddly specific trope I enjoy is older/younger siblings rivalries except one sibling is genuinely a bully, and instead of the older sibling it's the younger one. So say we have another, slightly quieter classmate who just hangs about, not knowing if she's part of the group or not, the introvert. And then a grade below her is her spoilt, popular little sister who basically has it all and is the full on self entered Queen Bee, who everyone loves because she's 'so cool and mature and also rich'.

Introducing the two sisters, the introverted chaotic academia older sister Yue and the extroverted dark academia (with a more regal lean) younger sister Hikari. Total opposites. Hikari meets Astral first in the corridor, has a little chat to see who the new kid is, and see whether she likes him or not. And if he'd feed her ego.

Yue meanwhile has been in the same class as the others for years, and they know each other. She would probably meet Astral in the library, as she spends a lot of time there, not just because she reads a lot, but also due to being neurodivergent; she gets sensory overloads due the noise of being around so many people (plus stress if Hikari's been picking on her) however as she's undiagnosed she just sneaks into the library for a break. Some of the teachers do let her, they suspect she's neurodivergent but can't say so without official diagnosis, but to others she's just a eccentric bookworm.

Also she helps run underground duelling tournaments. Yes, they are illegal. And yes, she has helped commit arson as a distraction.

Hikari wouldn't be outright mean to Astral, but she does look down on him as she thinks he's a bit weird.

The one person who is mean to him is the former smart kid, Sasuke. This is because Astral very easily beat his high marks on the first day and nearly instantly knocked him down from topping the class, so now he has a bone to pick with him, especially as he just can't seem to beat Astral's math grades. Ever.

Sleepovers are at Astral's. The house Don bought is MASSIVE. You can easily throw parties in there. And Don is the BEST sleepover parent, because he literally COULD NOT CARE LESS over what the kids are doing. Even if they tried to start a campfire in the living room because 'kids will be kids'. He even buys them all snacks, and gives Astral Eliphas's "his" credit card to buy food. Even if they wanna order at 3 30. He doesn't give a DAMN. Just don't touch his things. And if they were! hypothetically of course, to think that going off to the pond half a mile away at 2 am in April and having a swimming contest was a good idea, he wouldn't even be mad. He'd come collect them and then lie to their parents. At some point he's the adult all of them go to when in trouble. Also the DIRT Don has on everyone is INSANE, you'd think he'd always lived there and even Astral, who literally moved with him, sometimes forgets Don is also new to the area.

What would Don work as? I feel like he'd be a hairdresser, which is how he learns all the gossip.

Is this ANOTHER alternative version of Dad Thousand AU? Yeah.

I've actually been thinking of this for a while so bare with me.

When Don Thousand and Astral find out that they're father and son, Don Thousand realizes the way that many people treat Astral (ignoring him, patronizing him, treating like a weapon etc etc) and is just like 'Haha, yeah no I refuse to let him live like this.'

So one night both him and Astral leave Heartland city and Astral world and go to a far away town without telling anyone In case they try to follow them and they both learn how to fit in with humans more.

And everyone suspects the worse because both Astral and Don Thousand being missing at the same time? That can't be good, Don Thousand probably killed him. where in actuality, Don Thousand got fed up of both of them being treated horribly so now those two are living a peaceful life in a whole nother town.

And Astral finally gets to go to school!! He goes under the name 'Apis Subaru' and Don Thousand calls himself 'Adonis Subaru' and Astral is quick to be somewhat adopted into a friend group by one of the girls in it.

They all have different aesthetics/sub-fashions that they wear and they all have different personalities but they manage to get along regardless.

I mentioned this before, but she would have herself wrapped around you when going to sleep but by morning she would be on the other side of the bed

You aren’t sure if it was from dreams she has or if she just does it naturally

Sometimes her tossing and turning would wake you up, and you would shake her awake to make sure she’s okay

On this day a year ago, I watched DA:LEK for the first time, and coincidentally received my degree results.

Ever since, I have been absolutely obsessed with Digimon again. This piece will contain spoilers to DALEK, and overall you’ll find I have a very nostalgic love for the anime. When I initially watched the film in theatres, my reaction was ‘oh okay, that was fun. Time to move on’. Very nonchalant, and obviously this was the first summer with Covid, the same summer I could have had my graduation ceremony. This is a roundabout way of saying I think I felt rather hollow during this period of time. I say ‘I think’ because honestly, it’s a blur to me. There wasn’t anything worth remembering and leading up to this, in general I was a bitter person.Like most people, I think I’ve just blocked out the lost time. So here was a fresh uni graduate, mourning over a page of her youth that wasn’t worth noting down; trying to be hopeful and find ways to mold herself into society as a ‘real adult’. I did have other plans and tried them out, not all of them flew with flying colours and had a dip towards the end of 2020. As would any other kid with an active imagination, I did what I knew best and distracted myself with writing. I don’t think I necessarily ‘channeled’ all these spiraling emotions into my work, something I’ve grown acquainted with in my poetry. I wanted to escape, hit pause and get myself lost in fiction again; another thing I used to do a lot but at a much younger age. If anyone’s seen DALEK, then I think you might find it ironic how I processed this transitional period by indulging myself in Digimon and writing fanfiction. 

To completely make a clown of myself here, yes I had a good time watching the film and appreciated the message that came with it; both as a Digimon fan and a Literature dork who naturally over-analyzes everything. But for the first time since I was in diapers, simply put, I thought Yamato was really hot and he lived rent free in my mind until I was like ‘aight I need to do something with this realization I have a DigiHusbando because I’ve literally watched Digimon since I was a baby and for a baby all those characters are too old for me to have a crush on’.

Then (for the lack of a better word) a very childlike ‘desire’ of me came and I was like ‘hey Yamato’s hot, Hikari was my favourite character as a kid, I want to see them kiss’. Idk man, it’s the same vibes like when I played Barbies and I paired her with Ken because girl pink-boy blue. There’s some meaning there I don’t want to unpack yet. It started off as a ‘haha what if so crackship right’, but then I legitimately grew to love the idea of Yamato and Hikari as a couple. I am aware my version of them has heavy fanon elements, and again reflects my personal preferences in ships. I remember a time where I was so self-conscious of getting into fanfiction, because ‘I can’t do the character justice’ or ‘I don’t know enough of the canon’. Yeah, I appreciate it when an author can play off that, when their depiction of these characters is something you’d actually see happening in the show. But overtime I was just like ‘...I just want to have fun man, here’s them going on their first date via Yama’s bloody motorcycle’.

I just found a way to be happy with my crackhead interpretation of Yakari while gushing over what the OG story had to offer. As this was happening, I was revisiting the existence of DALEK, and I fell in love with the film. I know this is coming together as a ‘right time and place’ type of situation, and it was. From that time and place, I took it and went ham & cheese on it.  

Just thinking about what happens in DALEK now and how the themes of Digimon have always, always been about the children’s growth; I actually get a physical sadness from my gut. Someone’s going to read this & think I’m insane, but to make a comparison literally only I understand, I’ve only gotten this feeling with Kimi no Na wa and Little Women (2019) in recent memory. Which for all the ways I can’t quite express with the English language, means I really fucking love DALEK. It has impacted me artistically as much as it left its mark on me as a person and my views on life. Over the past year, this intense love over a children’s anime has helped me put into perspective my own messy thoughts on growing up. About finding your own healthy relationship with things from a ‘simpler time’ that spark joy and they can still invoke that feeling. Inevitably everyone grows up and it’s not something that waits for you to be ready with it; but you can find ways to embrace it and seize this new dawn according to your own terms.

I read the anime episode summaries on wikipedia and,,, yeah it seems like an offshoot comedy instead of the serious portions. While the comedy is aporeciated, I like the darker and more serious, psychological parts more :')

No, see, you're missing something! To begin with, Litchi Hikari Club is a comedy. The manga itself is intended to be comedic. The whole concept of LHC is that it's the combined, co-existing extremes of horror and comedy, the grotesque and the hilarious, the disturbing and the unbelievable! When you look at the manga, it's not realistic. The boys' plan is absolutely insane, the deaths are so exaggeratedly horrific they cross over into being funny, and there's a deep, dark sense of irony lingering over the whole thing.

LHC has never been serious. From the very start, this manga is about the most fucked-up comedy you can imagine. And personally, I think that the anime is an excellent representation of this. A more "serious" one would be great, but if you take the hilarious insanity out of LHC, you lose a major piece of what makes the series unique!
