Any tips on brushing out cats well? We try to brush our longhair guy regularly but it feels like he’s always finding fun and exciting new places to get mats. He’s been shaved once since we got him and he has a lot of mats again, but my mom doesn’t want to shave him yet because winter is coming and our house is old and gets really cold

ok so the thing about brushing out a cat (or a dog) is that you can't just do it once. You've got to go over their coat a few times with a couple different brushes and combs, just to really ensure you remove as much dead fur as possible and work out the tangles.

For cats with really thick and plush coats, I recommend starting with a slicker brush with really long teeth. You want to be sure the teeth are VERY close together; dog brushes have teeth that are more widely set apart. These are the types of brushes I use for Q and Benjamin. They're also a good fit for maine coons and many other long-haired cats.

For cats with a slightly silkier and less plush coat, I'll start with a pin brush. Mine aren't any particular brand. TBH I think a fair number of them were made for people and just bought at the dollar store. The cats don't know, they can't read. These are the brushes I use for my persians who are less blessed with plush.

Once I'm done brushing a cat, I'll move onto the combs.

I use a metal greyhound comb. They're cheap and common. Use the wide toothed bit first to start working out a tangle and then move onto the smaller toothed side. It's not really about removing the tangle; it's about moving the dead hair that's inside the tangle. You can always work a tangle into smaller, more manageable bits.

Corn starch is a really useful tool too. It absorbs oil, which makes it WAY easier to remove tangles. It's probably my biggest trick for cat coats (also works for dogs).

I avoid using undercoat rakes on cats. Their skin is often too sensitive for them. I also don't use mat breakers.

When you brush out a cat (or a thick coated dog), you really want to be sure you are brushing them all the way down to the skin. For best results, you should do their coat in sections.

Push the coat up with your hand to expose the skin. This should also create a 'line' of fur in a section. Very gently brush this section and then move onto the next. This technique is called 'line brushing'. I find it's the most effective way to prevent mats in very thick-coated cats.

If your cat routinely gets mats in specific areas, there's no harm in only shaving those areas. Benjamin, as handsome as he is, is walking around with naked armpits because he keeps getting matted in there and does not like to be brushed out.

You want to pick your time for brushing out your cat carefully. I recommend waiting until kitty is settling down for a nice sleep. You can also keep them distracted with a little churu, tuna, or similar treat so they associate brushing with something tasty.

I finished a TikTok for my Warriors Human AU AND NOW IT IS YOUR PROBLEM!!

So the basic premise is that the year is 1930, Chicago, and Rusty Hayes (Firepaw) is constantly having run ins with the law. He’s sent to jail where he has a tussle with Lloyd “Greyhound” Greyson (Greypaw), an apprentice of the ThunderClan Gang. Greyson starts bantering, they break out, and the rest is history.

What’s much more relevant here though is that Hester “Yellow Fang” Goldenrod, the disgraced Medic of the ShadowClan Gang has just discovered she is NOT in fact an ally but a bi disaster for Marilee “Blue Star” Diane, the leader of the ThunderClan Gang, and Meg Hayes, Rusty’s single mother. Honestly the fact no-one has thought of shipping these three is beyond me, I call them GreenNut.

Some notes about this AU because I am hyperfixating SO HARD ON IT RN!

Rusty stays a teen through the entire series and doesn’t become leader, this is to keep the timeline as fast paced as the books. I didn’t draw it very well but Hester had a stroke in her past, I wanted to somehow symbolize a Persian cat’s constant frown and settled on this. The timeline is heavily condensed in some places, for instance Appledusk is Crookedstar’s grandfather not great grandfather so I could have Mapleshade kill Rainflower. Nutmeg and Jake were a lavender marriage but they’re divorced now. Rusty is a twin but not with Princess, Princess is in her 20s and married so I could still give her CloudKit.

Molly is a mini doodle, her owner doesn’t really feed her. Or play with her. Or pay any attention to her. Ever. So she sneaks out a lot. He’s always calling her “Lucky” when her nametag very clearly says Molly, and gets confused when she doesn’t respond.

Pheonica is a purebred samoyed, and training to be a show-dog! She’s only just started, and she still has a good few months before she’s even old enough to enter. She’s a kind of floppy dog, y’know?? Like if you pushed her over she’d be like “Whoag :O layin down now I guess!” Very passive.

Trixie is a deer-head chihuahua! Very shaky,, people mistake her reactivity for anger. She’s just nervous. Has a big spiked collar. She has those lil eyebrow markings too..

Giovanni is a greyhound! Not sure what kind yet (persian?? Whippet??). Trixie and Giovanni have the same owners, and Giovanni has a spiked collar as well. He somehow runs off from home pretty much every day, no matter how hard they try to keep him in he manages to get out. He always comes back tho.

The neo trio are all about 2-3 months old,,, just puppies :)

Small piece for the xmen toh au:

Hexside Academy for Gifted Youngsters was built in the skeleton of an enormous colonial mansion, the kind built by Englishmen when they were inexplicably struck with homesickness after moving to America so they could pull every built of wealth out of its soil, tearing riches from between roots and among bones. It’s a home for people with so much wealth they can scarcely comprehend it, the wealth one can only make by extracting it through human suffering, the wealth that possesses one to build homes with the purpose of status and symbol, not for living as humans but as gods among men.

It’s Georgian architecture, stretching out languidly with its wings and courtyards. 3 stories and a basement, with dozens of rooms to fit an impossibly large family. Wings, observatories, courtyards, pavilions. Oak floors, tile floors, marble floors. Stone walls, wooden walls, walls lathed in centuries old Chinese wallpaper. The main entrance into the enormous mezzanine, and a dizzying number of entrances for the army of servants that historically tended to it, and all sorts of doors leading out into gardens and the other buildings that have been built in proximity, ever expanding as its purpose changes from country house to academic institution.

Amity grew up in a house like this. A mansion, a plantation house on the river, a stain on the landscape of starved dirt and thick air. Edric had told her it was a real plantation house, that he’d found all the evidence in the library, and she had sighed resignedly because what else does she say to that. How does she think about that and not throw up at the dinner table in front of Mother, how does she think about what their house was and not rot her food on its plate with her lack of discipline.

The Blight Estate was a place of death and misery, a place where suffering was calculatedly inflicted to extract as much potential wealth and usefulness as possible. It had done so for 203 years. Every single day Amity had been trapped in that goddamn place of ghosts, she had lost her mind just a little bit more. Too shameful to leave, too weak and undisciplined to be allowed the privilege of the outside world. A stain on the Blight name. Never as useful as her siblings.

Getting out of that mansion and being trapped in another should’ve been a unique kind of hell, a maddening taste of freedom snuffed out cruelly as though she had not earned anything. As if the punishment for her birth-shame would continue. Forced to endure more isolation, but without the quiet and privacy and familiarity.

Where her house had rooms of emptiness and calculated discomfort, entire caverns of awkward conversation and garish decorations and rooms without purpose, not a single inch of space seems anything but downright homely and comforting in the academy.

The library is well stocked and constantly recycled. More than a place to present books for display, to signal an imaginary intelligence and prestige from owning enough of the things one needs an entire room, it is a place to read. There are kettles for tea, and armchairs so comfortable one could melt between its cushions forever. The windows are open to let in the rich sunlight, and the chatter of study is as soft as the wind.

The north-west corner drawing room with windows that stretch to the ceiling, that would’ve been decorated in pillaged artefacts and endless paintings of greyhounds, becomes a music room. Guitars along the walls, a grand piano she’s been itching to try, a full acoustic drum set, beanbags and arm chairs, Persian rugs. Places to sit by the window and watch Edric fumble with a bass guitar hopelessly while she reads some more.

The ninth grade common room is too loud for her tastes, too stifled with bodies for her to be anything but still with terror at the hypothetical brush of a hand against her own, but it’s a place designed for the happiness and social behaviour of teenagers, and that in of itself is such a novelty she’ll still go to watch the Banshees play crude card games, and sit with company while she studies.

Counsellor Hooty gave her instructions for the art room, one of many places she still hasn’t been in, even over the course of her weeks at the academy. He hadn’t said anything about what sorts of arts were taught in the classroom, and she had no idea how to read his avian face for a smile, but he’d recommended it highly. Amity did not consider herself an artistic person, but when Professor Darius had seconded the advice, she had figured that she could at least bring herself to visit the room when she had no other engagements.

The enormous oaken doors open near silently, into the east wing parlour connected to the smallest observatory. The floorboards are scuffed and paint-splattered to such a degree she’s sure her mother would go into immediate cardiac arrest upon seeing it. There’s a heavy smell of plastic glue and paint in the air, and projects of varying degrees of completion strung up all over the room. A bust of what appears to be electronic components, fairy lights and broken glass stands by the window, glittering etherally in the sunlight.

Nicknames for borzois

From time immemorial, it has been customary for borzois to give nicknames that carry a certain semantic and emotional load. These traditions continue to this day. True, the “theme” of nicknames has changed significantly over time.

Since past centuries, the speed, vigilance and dexterity of these dogs have traditionally been reflected in the nicknames of borzois: Bystryy(fast), Veter(wind), Veterok(breeze), Vikhr'(whirlwind), Zorkyy(sharp-sighted), Krylat(winged), Lovkiy(dexterous), Polyot(flight), Prytkiy(quick), Bystra(female version of fast), Lyotka(flying), Krylatka(female version of winged), Provorka(agile), Pul'ka(bullet), Rezva(frisky), Shustra(nimble).

The nicknames given by the names of birds echo this theme: Berkut(golden eagle), Krechet(gyrfalcon), Korshun(kite), Sokol(falcon), Oryol(eagle), Strepet(little bustard), Golubka(female pigeon), Ptashka(birdie), Chayka(gull).

One of the indispensable qualities of the old Russian borzois - anger towards the beast - was reflected in the nicknames: Zver'(beast), Zlobach(vicious), Lyutyy(fierce), Svirep(ferocious), Lyutaya(female version of fierce), Tiranka(female tyrant).

A very peculiar approach of ancient hunters to the names of borzois is visible in the use of imperative verbs: Dogonyay(catch up), Doyezzhay(reach),Zamechay(notice), Nakryvay(cover), Porazhay(hit), Primechay(take notice), Raskiday(scatter), Sokrushay(crush), Khvatay(grab). Thus, hope was expressed for the future outstanding qualities of the dog.

Often the nickname was supposed to reflect the prowess and courage of the dog, which, of course, does not give the beast a descent during the persecution: Karay(punish), Katay(ride), Obizhay(offend), Nalyot(raid), Pobedim(win), Udaloy(daring), Shvyrok(throw), Nalyotka(female version of raid), Otvaga(courage), Raskida(female version of scatter), Slava(glory), Udalaya(female version of daring).

Oriental nicknames have always been quite popular with Russian borzois: Abrek(is a North Caucasian term used for a lone North Caucasian warrior living a partisan lifestyle outside power and law and fighting for a just cause), Agakhan(is a title held by the Imām of the Nizari Ismāʿīli Shias), Alan(In honor of a nomadic tribe in Asia), Anchar(antiaris), Bulat( 1)male name of Persian origin, which was borrowed by the Turkic peoples. The etymological meaning of the name is "steel". From the Turks, the name Bulat came to Rus', where it was used before the spread of Christianity. 2) is a type of steel alloy known in Russia from medieval times), Kuchum(was the last Khan of Siberia who ruled from 1563 to 1598), Lezgin(In honor of the Dagestan people, one of the indigenous people of the Caucasus), Nayan(was a prince of the Borjigin royal family of the Mongol Empire), Sultan, Turkmen(are a Turkic ethnic group native to Central Asia), Shaitan, Gulji(Presumably a goat), Fatma(Arabian woman name).This partly indirectly confirms the hypothesis of the eastern route of penetration of sighthounds into Russia. Well, after quite a lot of oriental sighthounds were brought in the 19th century, as already noted, the number of such nicknames naturally increased.

Many nicknames displayed character traits, one might say, desirable for a borzoi: Azarnoy(venturous), Nakhal(smart aleck), Razboy(robbery), Retivyy(mettled), Smelyy(brave), Buyana(brawl), Zadira(bully), Nagla(Insolent), Plutovka(cheat), Shel'ma(rogue), Shalun'ya(naughty). And this approach is understandable and traditional.

However, among modern nicknames, characteristics that are not very desirable for a greyhound began to appear more and more often: Dikar'(savage), Dobryak(kindley), Dikarka( female version of savage), Laska(caress), Nedotroga(touchy), Tikhonya(cuiet).Of course, the owners have always cherished and protected their dogs.

And an indicator of this attitude are the nicknames that emphasize the value of the dog: Bestsen(priceless), Dorogoy(dear), Podar(gift), Lyubim(loved), Serdechnyy (hearty), Yakhont(one of the obsolete names for the red and blue jewelry minerals corundum), Almazka(diamond), Biryuza(turquoise), Brasletka(bracelet), Nagrada(award), Serebryanka(silver), Yashma(jasper).

The spectacular appearance of sighthounds, especially Russian borzois with their luxurious coat, impresses even the inexperienced. And it is not for nothing that a fairly large number of nicknames, both in the past and now, emphasize this beauty. Here are just a few of them: Krasavchik(handsome), Ladnyy(fine), Prigozhay(comely), Blyostka(Glitter), Divnaya(marvelous), Igrushka(toy), Krasa(beauty), Krasotka(beauty).

In our times, nicknames taken from the names of plants of our homeland have become widespread among borzois: Bagul'nik(Labrador tea), Klyon(Maple), Kovyl'(feather grass), Lyutik(buttercup), Shalfey(sage), Beryozka(Birch), Yolka(Christmas tree), Kalina(guelder rose), Medunitsa(lungwort), Melissa(lemon balm).

As well as lakes, rivers and other geographical names of Russia: Baikal, Valdai, Don, Sayan, Angara, Volga, Katun.

Borzois, like some other domestic breeds of hunting dogs, often have nicknames that reflect natural phenomena: Grom(thunder), Iney(hoarfrost), Rassvet(dawn), Tuman(fog), Volna(wave), Groza(thunderstorm), Dymka(mist), Metel'(blizzard), Purga(snowstorm).

It can be seen under the impression that the Russian nobility was engaged in hunting with borzois in past centuries, a lot is now found among borzois and "titled persons": Barin, Knyaz', Sudar', Tsarevich, Tsar, Boyarynya, Grafinya(Countess), Knyazhna, Printsessa(Princess).

Borzois are considered an ancient Russian breed, the personification of old times. And, probably, the appearance of nicknames that came from legends, fairy tales and from the names of historical figures is connected with this: Berendey, Yermak, Kudiyar, Leshiy, Orlov, Sadko, Bylina, Skazka, Snegurochka.

so im gonna draw the rangers as lps [and anathema and mortum as well cus i love them] and so far its narrowed down to : ortega - the sitting german shepherd mold OR the pomeranian mold . i have two specific ones in mind for him . argent - a persian cat . or a wolf cat mold but cconsidering i have valentine as a wolf cat i will probably be switching her to the laying down persian cat mold herald - sugar glider or some sort of bird . sugar glider cus hes cute , bird because he goes in the air . its simple really , im just not totally set on what bird mold steel - greyhound . maybe a bit too on the nose considering he Has a greyhound , but i think the greyhound mold works the best for him . am still unsure on which molds anathema and mortum would be , im thinking maybe one of the angora rabbit molds for anathema OR a lop eared bunny mold , and w mortum im leaning towards a deer ? but not totally set at all yet
