Eulogies for 5 animals who died at the Toronto Zoo in 2024
Between the premature deaths, the shrinking genetic pool, the disturbing behaviors among zoo animals, and that only a handful of species have ever been successfully restocked in the wild by zoos, we need to understand that zoos are there to make money, not save animals.

...we are a vulgar, pushing mob whose passions are easily mobilized by demagogues, newspaper men, religious quacks, agitators and such like. To call this a society of free peoples is blasphemous. What have we to offer the world beside the superabundant loot which we recklessly plunder from the earth under the maniacal delusion that this insane activity represents progress and enlightenment?

I think it's a deep consolation to know that spiders dream, that monkeys tease predators, that dolphins have accents, that lions can be scared silly by a lone mongoose, that otters hold hands, and ants bury their dead. That there isn't their life and our life. Nor your life and my life. That it's just one teetering and endless thread and all of us, all of us, are entangled with it as deep as entanglement goes.
Kate Forster
