One of these days I will figure out the secret to turning my brain off to go to sleep when it is in Project Mode and then it's Over for you fools
#ramblings of an arrow#I will be so powerful#as it stands currently I cant sleep because all I can do is think about Trap Troubles#and how damn excited I am to thumbnail this comic#and how much I want to be doing it Right Now#planning panel layouts in my head#is not conducive to actually sleeping#but anyways all of the characters are like blorbos to me#and I cant stop turning them around in my head#and trying to plan visual foreshadowing#soooooo full of project thoughts and excitement do not know how to fix it#perhaps I will post the character line up I did sometime tomorrow#anyways if I can keep this excitement and momentum up for the rest of the month that bodes Very Well for my ability#to eventually pursue something art related for a living#or produce my own webcomic#its also just EXTRA FUN because its a collaboration with my wife and she is SUCH a fantastic writer#she really carries the whole thing#and it helps me be less self conscious because im not worried about whether or not the writing is good#I KNOW the writing is good#and I know my art will be Good Enough#because a myriad of art mistakes can be forgiven when the writing is good#takes a lot of pressure off my brain lol

(The only reason I did not put any fic specific asks for this is because you have so many that I fucking adore that I can't even begin to pick out which ones to ask about đł perhaps tomorrow I will send another ask because my god do I love hearing from authors about their fics)
How old were you when you first starting writing fanfiction?
I almost feel like a late bloomer, but eighteen, tbh. I only really entered "fandom" spaces in college and it spiraled from there.
5. If you had to choose a favourite out of all of your multi chaptered stories, which would it be and why?
Shoot, that's hard....I think I'd choose The Nature Of The Wind, one of my stories from the TMNT fandom, because it still gets so much love and I'm proud of the darkness I explored there.
7. When is your preferred time to write?
Whenever the spirit moves me! Seriously, I prefer to be well rested, but I've written up a storm in the dead of night, too.
8. Where do you take your inspiration from?
A whole lot of places...great fic authors (like a certain someone who sent me this ask), books I've read, stories, personal experience, family stories, art. I've been known to pillage the Bible from time to time, and Greek mythology, too. It all just melts together into a bubbling witch's brew and I fish out (what I hope are) the best bits for my writing.
12. Who is your favourite character to write for? Why?
Depends on the fandom...for TMNT it's Leonardo, because I love his tortured leader aesthetic and the sheer amount of trauma he puts up with is really fun. For DC it's Damian, because I have a soft spot for angsty baby murderers trying to be better.
For Avatar I'd think recom Jake, because he's such a perfect Frankenstein's monster of hunger and cruelty and pain and power. With Spider being a close second, because I love this boy and I love fucking him up.
17. Post a line from a WIP that youâre working on.
Itâs insane. Sheâs insane. Her very existence is a mark of insanity, always has been and always will be. If she thinks too hard about what she wants to do, it will overwhelm her, and the fire and water are both getting closer. There is no time, no time.Â
18. Do you have any abandoned WIPâs? What made you abandon them?
God, so many....I've got a whole doc for dead Avatar WIPS and more TMNT WIPs than I can count. Usually they just--weren't working? It felt too familiar, sometimes, or just wrong, or it wasn't as fun to write as I'd hoped, and being fun to write usually means fun to read (I think).
21. Tell me about another writer(s) who you admire? What is it about them that you admire?
Well, tbh...there's this one writer who writes the most amazing, vivid, wild and fractured and lovely stories, and who writes some pretty spectacular comments, and sends me some great asks to boot! Their name might be familiar.
27. Do you make a general outline for your stories or do you just go with the flow?
I'm a go-with-the-flow little bastard (gender neutral) and I probably always will be.
33. Whatâs the biggest compliment youâve gotten?
Someone told me they hoped I kept writing, both in fanfiction and in general, because I was really something, and I don't know, that just stuck with me? I want to believe it's true.
36. Can you give us a spoiler for one of your WIPâs?
Mommy-and-me assassination attempts.
37. Whatâs the funniest story youâve written?
I wrote a nsfw story once about characters fucking while they watched the Kevin McCarthy debacle and I still think I should have gotten an award for it or something. It's you're gonna need congressional approval and you don't have the votes (it's not Hamilton fanfiction I stg, I just couldn't resist the title).
41. Whatâs your favourite minor character youâve written?
Honestly changes depending on who I'm writing, heh, but right now it's definitely Sylwanin te Tskaha Mo'at'ite. She deserves so much more love and attention and I miss her even though she was technically never on screen.
44. What is the last line you wrote?
It helps that if they do look at her, all they see is her baby, that they think mother and not threat. It helps that no one bothers to consider how easily the two can overlap.
45. What spurs you on during the writing process?
The high, maybe? The fact that writing feels good and getting comments feels good and I like being able to get these thoughts out of my head and share them with so many great people.
48. Whatâs your favourite trope to write?
Not sure if angst/abuse/trauma/violation dressing itself up as soft fluff counts as a trope, but if it is, it fucking wins hands down. I love it when the horrors try to pretend not to be horrors and never quite get there.
49) Can you remember the first fic you read? What was it about?
A TMNT OT4 turtlecest future fic with immortality, bondage, and the apocalypse. It's called Casting Stones at the River by GoblinCatKC and I still love it so fucking much.

Haikyuu! Drabble: When you get hurt (minor injuries)
Note: Ugggghhhhhhh I love these men. Honestly. wtf. How can you have so many good guys in one anime. Also please donât take this as a sign that Iâll stop posting for Genshin, but you know, give me some space to hype over my other fandoms please XD
Warnings: itâs seriously just plain fluff
Characters: Kageyama, Tsukishima, Oikawa, Bokuto, Ushijima
Kageyama
âWhat happened to your knee?â
Is the first thing he says, his face as serious as ever, eyes looking at your bandaged knee as he approaches you in class. You laugh nervously as you unwound the school bag away from your shoulder, placing it on your desk.
âAh, I was walking Momo-chan last night...But you know, heâs gotten so big and I guess I was a little distracted...He saw a squirrel and just went running for it and...â you trail off, feeling Kageyamaâs aura change. You knew he was about to call you reprimand you, and sure enough, he says âIdiot,â just as he would to Hinata.
On closer inspection you also had a bandage around your wrist. He guessed that you tried to hold on to the leash and it dragged your hand across the pavement.Â
After berating you with that one word, he wouldnât say anything else about it. But he would, whenever he could, show some concern that you wouldnât usually see. âIâll take that,â he grabs your lunch box from you and you look up at him all confused as to why heâs carrying it for you today.Â
But, he stops at the door of the classroom and then turns around. âActually, letâs just eat here,â as opposed to the school rooftop where the two of you usually ate.Â
And then, at the end of the school day, before you could even lift your bag over your shoulder, heâs already there and lifting it on HIS shoulder. Youâre dumbfounded. âAre you going to your club? Iâll walk you first then go to mine,âÂ
Then it hits you. Itâs because youâre hurt, and he didnât want you to strain your knee or wrist anymore. You secretly smile but let him do what he wants. There was no stopping him when he set his mind to it after all. âTobio-kun, you know, itâs just a scrape, I can still do things by myself,âÂ
âShut up and just let me do it...â he mutters under his breath, until he drops you off to your club and goes his own way.Â
And then, as your nightly routine to walk Momo-chan, youâre stunned when you see your boyfriend standing there, outside your house gates. Hands in his pockets. âT-Tobio?âÂ
He lived close by, but still, you didnât expect him to be there. He snatches the leash away from you, your dog is just happily gazing at the two of you, tail swishing wildly at the fact that TWO of his favourite people are walking him today. And again, Kageyama says,
â...I need to go for a run anyway,â
Tsukishima
âExcuse me, Iâm looking for a Tsukishima-san,â
A girl in the basketball team uniform appears at the doorway of the gym, all members turn to her as she bows and straightens up. Tsukishima sighs in relief. Finally an actual excuse to rest from training.Â
âThatâs me,â he towers over the girl, who only blinks up at him, slightly intimidated. âAh, uh, yeah...Y/N said that you have her spare glasses?â His eyebrows perk up. Right. You were in the basketball team, for some reason he always forgot that detail.Â
He turns away without a word and goes to his bag. He did, indeed, have your spare glasses. You left it at his house last time during a study session, being the airhead that you are. He retrieves it but before handing the black box to the girl, he asks. âWhat happened to the ones she has?âÂ
He wasnât thinking much of it. Perhaps someone accidentally stepped on it, or maybe you even accidentally broke it.
"The ball hit her face,âÂ
âIs she--â
The words of worry practically dies on his lips. He could feel and sense Yamaguchi and Sugawara listening in to the conversation and heâd drop dead before getting caught being worried for someone. But still, this is why he always told you that you needed sports glasses. A scratch to the eye could be dangerous.
He sighs pretty loudly, and turns to face Sugawara who was off court, standing next to Yamaguchi who was also taking a small break. âSugawara-san, Iâll be back,â Thereâs a big smile on his vice captainâs face, same as Yamaguchi who knew that his friend was actually worried.Â
Tsukishima ignored their stupid smiles.
âOh! Kei,â You look up as the door to the school clinic opened, you were just sitting on one of the beds, legs moving back and forth and waiting for your teammate to retrieve the spare glasses for you. Tsukishima said that heâd handle it and as he passed the black box to you he grabs your chin and turns it in his hands, looking at your eyes.Â
There was a cut under your left eye that was already patched up. He releases your face when he was sure it was actually nothing serious, only to cross his arms and smirk at you. âSee, I told you that hard head of yours would come in handy. Also receive the ball with your hands, not your face,â
You puff your cheeks out in annoyance and put your spare glasses on, feeling brand new. âSure did, but my glasses arenât as strong as my skull,â you sulked and he only blinked. âand I was taking a break! Then suddenly I see the ball coming at me, I donât think thatâs my fault!â
âI believe you. Your team has horrid ball passing skills after all,â heâs relentless with his insults but you knew thatâs just the way he was. The fact that he came all the way to the school clinic told you enough about his worry. So, you ignore his last remark and smile up at him, âThanks for checking on me, Kei,âÂ
He clicks his tongue but places his hand on your head, âLetâs get you new ones tomorrow, and maybe now youâll listen to me about those sports glasses,âÂ
Oikawa
âSheâs absent today,â
Oikawaâs face fell. You hadnât told him anything about being sick or being unwell today. He wondered what happened. However, despite his looks and carefree personality, the Aoba Johsai captain was someone who was actually quite detailed. âIn that case, can someone pass me her homework? Iâll go and deliver it to her!â
Safe to say your classmates were always surprised at how much the captain doted on you. He wasnât always doing it openly, but at least he was thoughtful and thorough.
âY/N-chan~ How could you leave me all alone in school today?â You could practically hear the pout from the other side of the line. Heâd gone to the school grounds to get some private time to call you.Â
âSorry Toru, I canât really walk properly. It should be fine in a few days though,â
His heart did a little leap, worry etching itself on his features. âWhat do you mean? What happened?â
The pout in his voice was gone, replaced by what you always called âthe captain voiceâ.Â
âI sprained my ankle...Itâs a long and stupid story...â you laughed but you heard him sigh. âWell, I have no choice then. Your prince will visit you after-school today!â
You didnât think he really would. He had volleyball practice and he took those seriously. But at 8 pm, just as you finished dinner, your doorbell rang and next thing you knew he was in your room.Â
Your mother just LOVED him. Sometimes you thought even more than you. She was unaware of how hyper Oikawa actually was. He certainly knew how to play his cards right.Â
âAlright princess, let me see that foot,â While you were sitting on your chair he practically bent down on on one knee and inspected it. He did kind of look like a prince like that, with his volleyball jacket. Then he suddenly plopped on the floor with his legs crossed. âAAhhhh! That sucks you wonât come to school for a few days!â He was whining again and you couldnât help but laugh.Â
Without fail, every day that you were absent, he showed up at your house after practice.
Bokuto
Itâs not that you were particularly clumsy. You were actually a pretty careful person, and thatâs why Bokuto always trusted your cooking skills over his. Baking a cake shouldnât be too hard, but you were rather unfamiliar with the oven at his place.
âMm, so, it says here to just leave it in the oven for 45 minutes!â he has this big smile on his face and you shake the batter in the round container again. The oven had already been pre-heated and when you open the door to it, hot air greets you.Â
You took the round container in your hand, and push it in. It sits just at the front of the oven and you really hate it when that happens, so, with your boyfriend still focused on the recipe (and without mittens cause you think itâll just be quick push) you try to inch the round cake pan further in with your hand. At one point, you accidentally touch the inside of the hot oven and you recoil your hand with a loud gasp.Â
âWHAT?! What what what?!â Bokuto flings the recipe book away and clutches at your hand. In all honesty it didnât hurt that much, but you had made contact on the hot surface just enough for it to sting and startle you. âNothing Kou, I just accidentally touched the oven,â you laugh sheepishly but heâs pulling you over to the sink.
The boy is panicking.
âWater!â Youâre amazed at how he even knows what to do, running water now splashing on your hand. It wasnât even enough to burn you, it was just a little red, thatâs all. âK-Kou, itâs totally fine,âÂ
But he turns to you with a waterfall of tears running down his eyes and his hair has deflated from itâs usual spiky style. âI-Iâm so useless!âÂ
âAh there he goes,â you think. But youâve been trained by Akaashi how to handle these kinds of outbursts from him. âNot at all Kou-kun, you mixed the batter so perfectly. I usually get tired when I do that, but you have really strong arms! Next time Iâll let you handle the oven too, is that okay?â
He stares at you blankly for a moment. The tears have disappeared and his lips oh-so slowly curve into a smile. He gives you a thumbs up, back to his usual flair and confidence. âOf course! Leave it to me!â and he laughs triumphantly while you thank Akaashi in your mind.
Ushijima
Cooking for him and Tendo at the dorms was like a weekly routine. It was mostly for Ushijima, but Tendo liked crashing the cooking party too.
âBe careful.â Ushijima says as he passes the vegetables for you to chop. You did so without any incident. The cooking itself passes by without any incident, until your hand slip off the plate youâre holding and it comes crashing down the floor, shattering into pieces, some of the pieces flying off in different directions.
Ushijima and Tendo perks up in alarm at the sudden sound, with Ushijima being the first to rise on his feet and assess the situation. Youâre about to carefully just move away from the mess you made, shards littering around your feet. âDonât move,â Ushijima tells you, noting that you were only wearing his over-sized slippers. He sees that one of the shards has cut your foot. It was small, but since it was fresh, it was still bleeding.Â
âIf you move youâll hurt yourself, wait for me,â you do as told as Ushijima first sweeps off the rest of the shattered glass with a broom, disposes of it. Next he comes to you with a new set of slippers, puts it down on the now clean floor, and tells you to carefully slip out of the ones you have on, he was cautious about the small pieces. Only when you were neatly into the new set of slippers did he clean off the rest of the glass.
Tendo only sat and watched in amusement. His captain was very thorough, even with things like that. âIâll go and get a first aid kit~â he offered as he stood and sauntered off. âY/N, sit over there,â he pointed at a nearby chair and you merely follow. There was no use saying no to him, you knew he just wanted to check if everything was in order.
Sure enough just as Tendo comes back with the kit, Ushijima inspects your foot, eyes scanning all around it. It seems that there was only that one cut and itâd be easy to treat. You werenât surprised that Ushijima knew what to do, watching him take some cotton and pour some alcohol on it, muttering under his breath that it would sting a bit.Â
By the end of it, the cut on your foot was disinfected and bandaged properly. âOohhhh! Good job Wakatoshi-kun!â Tendo praised his friend for the clean job and Ushijima nodded his head with a small âMm,â
âThank you,â you smile up at him, âand sorry for the plate, I wasnât paying attention,âÂ
Ushijima makes a thoughtful sound, perhaps a little confused by your apology â...The plate is of no great value,â he simply says âit can be replaced.â
"I canât say the same for you Y/N, so itâs good that you werenât gravely hurt,â The blush on your cheeks is obvious and Ushijima doesnât understand what has you so flustered, heâs just being his honest and straightforward self.Â
Tendo only laughs at the display.

Letters To Apartment 64 D P2
Media: The Queen's Gambit (Netflix 2020)
Character: Benny Watts (Thomas Brodie Sangster)
Couple: Benny Watts X Reader
Rating:Â Mostly Adorable
Concept: Long Distance Relationship Meet Up
I sat at my table unable to stop flipping through my little box at all our old letters, photos, little trinkets, all our old chess games. Looking at her most recent letter and the sweet polaroid of her beautiful little dress in the grass, it even smelt of her perfume as she always has the letters a spritz so they smelt of her perfume. He was right this is stupid I have the money and I've never really met her.
So I squared up my typewriter and made myself a cup of tea with one of the little tea bags she sent me in her last letterÂ
'My Dearest Y/n,Â
I have missed you terribly, I was thrilled when I got home to the apartment and noticed your letter, you know how much it cheers me up to hear from youâ
I filled out the letter with tournament news as always things that were going on and of course, sent my own move in reply in order to continue our game putting the letter and the move in separate small envelopes for her and I loaded up another bit of paper
"Dearest y/n.Â
We have known each other for a very long time now, and not a day goes by I don't think of you in some small way, and even though there lies an ocean between us, even though we have never truly seen eye to eye or even touched skin to skin, I know my feelings for you are beyond measure and I know you feel the same.Â
But I cannot wait any longer.
I have sent you over some money from my recent tournament prize, I know we said we wanted to wait perhaps to meet in Paris sometime but I'm desperate to see you, to hear your voice to finally meet you in person. There should be enough for a first-class flight of course and even enough for a hotel, I can offer you my living room but I don't know how comfortable you'd be given⌠we haven't ever met, so there's enough for a hotel too.Â
I hope I get to see you soonÂ
Love Benny X'
I put the letter in an envelope with the cash and gave them each a spitz with my aftershave as always drawing a little Panda on the envelope for her as I sealed it all up in one large envelope writing her address on giving it a tap in my hand for a moment unsure to do it but I slipped my boots and my jacket on heading up to the mall boxes putting it on for outgoing mail.
I sat playing chess with myself, what's new I suppose contemplating what I could potentially do for dinner today. I have eggs. AndâŚ. I think there's cheese in the fridge.Â
When the phone rang for a moment making me jump I glanced at the clock who would be calling me at half five at night? So I picked it up and immediately heard Serval strange beeps and tones as if connecting through things until at last, I heard someone on the other lineÂ
"You stupid boy"Â
"Uhhhh⌠who is this?" I asked very confused
"Who do you think it is"
"Honestly, I have no idea. Could be anyone"
"It's me, you American imbecile"Â
"Y/n!" I said in shock surprised I didn't recognize her voice "awwww hi sweetheart I didn't know you were going to call today"
"Well I wanted to"
"To call me stupid?"
"Yes"
"What did I do?"
"I got my post this morning, you shouldn't have done that"
"Well. I wanted to" I smiled "I miss you. Y/n I've known you so long now, and⌠I really like you hell you know I love you don't you"
"I do. I love you too benny. But you shouldn't have"
"Well, I did. Too late now. What are you going to mail the money back?"
"I should, but you're right. We've been talking so long it's really time"
"So you'll come?"
"I will, I'm packing now going to go to the airport first thing tomorrow morning"Â
"Ohh. Okay" I gulped looking around my messy apartment
"That okay"
"Yes. Yes, that's fine I uhhhh what time is it there right now?"
"Half ten"
"In the morning?"
"Yes" she giggled
"Right, sorry just trying to do⌠maths in my head so I'll probably see you early Wednesday morning by the time you get in"
"Mostly likely, you don't mind me getting a hotel so you?"
"No, no course not. You should feel safe, especially in a new place. But your welcome to stay a night with me maybe later in the week if your comfortable"
"Perhaps" she smiled "how much money should I bring?"
"You let me worry about that"Â
"Benny-"
"I'm serious I'll deal with it. That and then you don't have to go through the trouble of converting it. I'm sure when I go see you you'll return the favour"
"Alright, anything you want me to bring?"
"Just you. That's all I care about"
"Alright, it's funny I had almost forgotten when you sound like"
"I did too been so long since we got to call. Been so busy and with the time zones and all, you sound so sweet."
"Will you remember what I look like?" She giggled
"Well. I might take a polaroid to the airport just to make sure"
"Yeah me too, an innocent one though benny"
"I don't know maybe if you walk through the airport with your shirt up I might recognize you easier"
"Dirty boy" she giggled "maybe you should do the same maybe I'd recognize a different bit of you better"
"You might" I smirkedÂ
We talked for hours while she did her packing about everything and nothing I never wanted it to end but I had to get some sleep especially given I would need to clean and get some shopping tomorrow before she gets hereÂ
"I'll let you go, got things to do"
"Yeah, don't want to cost you anymore" I laughed "I'll see you soon then y/n"
"I'll see you soon benny, I'll call you before I get on my flight tomorrow"
"Okay, I'll move my phone beside the bed so I don't miss it. I can't wait to see you"
"I can't either" she smiled "I love you"
"I love you too" I smiled, even blowing her a kiss she gave me one too and we hung up, I smiled so bubbly and excitedly grabbed my pad to make a list of everything I needed to buy and to do before she gets here.Â
I gave my apartment a good tidy up having already put the shoppers away having filed the fridge and cupboards, even having done all my laundry and changed my bed doing my best to make the place look nice she did call this before she got on the plane but that was several hours ago now so it likely wouldn't be long till she arrived and honestly I wanted to be there to pick her up anyway.Â
So I got dressed trying to be nice but also make sure I looked familiar so she'd recognize me.
I shined my black shoes a little making sure they looked nice, wore my good jeans, my nice black button down doing an extra button up even if I still didn't do them all up, putting a comb through my hair and even sorted my facial hair a little, I slipped my jacket on getting my keys, my wallet and her sweet picture giving it a kiss before I put it in my pocket I for a moment debated my hat but it's lucky, so I took it as I headed up to my car, doing my best to avoid the nightmare of traffic. Parking up in the small lot for pick-ups mostly full of other little cars and taxis and heading Inside the airport for a while I just hung around the arrivals having a look around at things even if I was getting some funny looks. I did find the board for flights but I think it was updated last week. So I went and found a lady at a deskÂ
"Hello sir" she smiled giving me a look up and down with a slight glare "how can I help you today"
"Yeah, there should be a flight coming in from London soon any idea A when and B where"Â
"Let's see," she says having a look through her paperwork "we have six flights arriving from London within the next four hours"
"Uhh she called at eight and said she was about to board her flight"
"Alright, which flight was next to leave⌠at the eight-thirty then which is due to arrive at gate six in about ten to twenty minutes"
"Ah thank you," I smiled quickly following the signs and such to the gate and soon enough I found the plane parked up already they were just connecting the tunnel thing to it now, I wasn't the only one there were a few other people here waiting too. It didnât take long for the flow of people to start coming from the doors, as soon as I saw the first few people I got the polaroid from my pocket often glancing at it as women left but none of them looked right and many of them were on men's arms of had people waiting for them here already, I began getting a little nervous as it went on surely there couldnât be that many people left the flow of people had slowed to almost none, did I miss her? Did she get on a different plane? Did the reception lady lie to me?Â
I checked the photo again and looked around in case I had missed her, but when I glanced up and saw her.
One of the last people off in fact the flight Crew behind her, She wore little white heels, black stockings with a perfect seam up the back, black petticoats peaking out from under a beautiful white textured dress, a sweet little black cardigan, her hair done perfectly with a little white Alice band to hold her hair back, I could tell immediately without having to check the picture that it was her, I couldnât stop smiling just seeing her, really here in front of me, she spotted me and she blushed a little holding her bag tightly in her hand, she stepped over slowly still leaving a bit of space between us.
âHiâ I smiled
âHiâ she giggledÂ
âHow uhh how was your flight?â
âGoodâ she smiled shuffling her feet âIt's nice, to⌠finally meet youâ
âYeah, It's lovely to finally meet you, If I mayâ I smiled offering my hand she happily took it so I gave her hand a kiss âI didnât think you were quite this beautiful,â I told her making her blushÂ
âI never thought youâd be quite this handsomeâ
âYour sweetâ I smiled âCome on weâll get your stuff, I can drive you to your hotel and then we can go get dinner if you likeâÂ
âIâd like that. Very much bennyâ she smiled offering her hand so I happily took it holding her hand tightly she squeezed my hand too and even hugged my arm a little as we headed to get her bags.

Authorâs Note: Week 3 of keeping up my writing schedule letâs go! This week is a bit angsty, my forte (I think?) As usual part one â with Albedo, Childe, and Diluc â will be posted tonight and part two â Kaeya, Xiao and Zhongli â tomorrow.
At first this was going to be both your injury and your recovery but then the first character hit over 1.5k words so I guess this is going to be a pseudo-series. I really donât know the definition of concise lol.
In the first part of my last fic I realize I gendered a word. Iâm super sorry about that, and I promise to fix it and tag properly next time. Childe gets to go into the stone forest cause I say he can. Iâm not sure if waypoints are diegetic or nondiegetic. I decided to make them so. Also the first hospital in China was opened in the early 1800s, and I know hospitals arenât very âfantasyâ but Teyvat has good medical science in my book.
Albedo
Throughout his life the one thing that Albedo never truly understood was peoplesâ obsession with modesty, even when it was false.
There was a lot that Albedo was proud of in regards to himself; his intellect for one, his curiosity, his abilities as an alchemist, the fact that he feared little in the world. Above all perhaps was the pride he held in carrying himself without falling into hysteria, his grip on his emotions was impeccable and whenever he was unfortunate enough to see others gripped with a heavy emotion he was always left with a sour feeling in his mouth â a disgust for someone who had so little sense they couldnât even control themselves.
This was a pride that left him quickly enough upon seeing you injured.
It wasnât meant to be a dangerous expedition. Itâd merely been a check of the vast network of caves and tunnels that could be found in Dragonspine. A route affair, mundane even in how simple it supposedly was. There was nothing to be afraid of. Albedo had told you that back at home and youâd smiled in agreement. Yes, there was nothing to be worried of, a few hilichurls at most and a temperature that could be easily kept in check with the right preparation. Youâd be there and back in less than a day, no problem.
Everything, however, had gone horribly wrong. The cave that you two intended to explore turned out to be a vast network, full of tight tunnels and half submerged under freezing water. You two had managed that well enough, although once Albedo had almost slipped and fallen into the underground river, the whole outlook of the expedition was looking drearier and drearier.
Eventually youâd reached what had seemed to be the heart of the cave, floor after floor of ice with a hole in the middle, all lit up by crystal and scarlet quartz. It was an impressive sight to be sure and youâd stood a little ways away from the edge, observing the way the light refracted off the ice coated walls, waiting for Albedo to be finished with his sampling, enjoying the awesome sight in front of you.
Albedo had just finished when youâd let out a yelp. Whirling around he saw what had captured your attention â a wild snowboar whoâd managed to wander in. The two of you watched the very confused creature in awe, only staring as it stomped the ground and charged right into the wall.
That was a mistake.
All of the sudden the cavern started shaking violently. Cursing the boar for its terrible â or maybe impeccable â aim the two of you sprinted towards the exit. Youâd managed to gain the lead, not bogged down by Albedoâs extensive equipment, and had turned around near the beginning of the tunnel in order to help him. Just as you were heading back one of the many icicles that lined the roof of the cave came undone, landing with a sickening thud right where your collarbone met your spine.
Youâd dropped like a rock, and Albedo felt his stomach to turn water and his mind turn to static, as suddenly all logic seemed to leave him, instead replaced by dread so overpowering he seemed to lose track of his surroundings, chained to the ground by something greater than himself.
You groaned and time seemed to unfreeze itself, instead accelerating at a breakneck pace. Leaping into action Albedo immediately dropped all of his equipment, the sound of glass vials shattering muffled by the cases that held them and the panic that was gripping him. Hauling you over his back he ran through the tunnels, wincing every time you made a sound and biting his tongue every time he shimmied through a particularly tight spot and it seemed it might not let the two of you pass as you were.
He could feel the blood seeping through his gloves. Your blood. Only a few minutes ago he wasnât even sure that icicles could make one bleed. Now he wished heâd never found out, wished that heâd never asked to explore the caves of Dragonspine, wished that youâd never agreed to it. How could he have been so foolish, so blind to the dangers that waited in vast caverns of ice and snow, where the slightest wrong movement could spell your death.
Albedo couldâve cried when he sighted the camp. Indeed he mightâve, realizing that there were frozen tears on his cheeks only after youâd been taking to the medical tent. He hadnât noticed, hadnât noticed anything really in those terrifying moments between when youâd gotten hurt and when heâd made it to the camp. It all seemed not to exist in his mind, washed away by the emotions that had wracked his mind and body. Even now he couldnât stop shaking, couldnât stop the tide of emotions that was crashing into him like a wave, utterly helpless as he was thrown this way and that.
The pride that heâd clung to was in tatters, and Albedo looked upon it now in disgust. Heâd been so innocent, so foolish, perhaps mercifully so. But all that was gone, and his certainty had gone with it. There was nothing left of him almost; nothing except fear and anger and worry, and Albedo wondered when he might ever feel sure of everything again.
It was cloudy when you were released, arm in a sling, brace around your shoulders. Albedo wasnât sure how much time had passed, it had seemed like an eternity. The urge to run up to you and wrap you in the tightest hug imaginable was intense, but the sight of the brace held him back. Instead he brought you hand up to his face, kissing your palm before holding it against his cheek. You smiled at that, but there was fatigue in your eyes and you said nothing. Albedo couldnât blame you. He moved to let go and turn towards the path, somehow feeling unworthy of holding your hand after being the cause of your predicament, but you quickly grasped his hand once more. He smiled a slightly shocked smile, but made no move to let go.
As you two walked back to Mondstadt Albedo felt himself once more flooded by negative thoughts. Lowering his gaze so he was looking at the ground he paused for a moment.
âIâm sorry.â
Albedo found his voice cracking, tears welling his eyes even as he chastised himself for how stupid he mustâve looked. You were safe, you were going to be alright, the head of the clinic had said so himself. Why then did he still feel like he might crumble any minute? Shaking his head he moved to cover his face with his hand.
âHey.â There was still fatigue in your voice, but there was also an urgency in it. You squeezed the hand you were holding, moving so you were facing him. âHey, is it okay if you look at me?â
Albedo moved his head up slowly. He was truly crying by now, having given up all efforts to do so otherwise. You smiled softly as his eyes met yours.
âIâm alright, okay? And you shouldnât blame yourself for this. I doubt that even the drunkest man in Monstadt couldâve guessed a wild boar would wander in a cavern and start a cave in. You canât control fate you know.â
âI know.â Albedo forced the words out, although more and more it seemed impossible, his throat was too constricted to be anything more than barely coherent. âStill. I shouldâve known. And I shouldâve kept it together. I, why am I crying? Why wasnât I in control? Why, why am I still not in control?â
âBecause youâre human Albedo.â You replied, shaking your head slightly. âYouâre the most wonderful human alive, but youâre still human. You mustnât beat yourself up for what you are. Iâd rather you cry anyways. Thereâs nothing noble in hiding your emotions, they must come out one way or another. So please, please cry all you want, long and hard. And tomorrow you can start your penance, alright?â
âPenance?â Albedo mumbled, still crying. You nodded, smile still nothing but fondness and understanding.
âWell someoneâs going to have to help me for the next two months. And I know youâre too much a gentleman to make me stumble along myself.â
âOf course.â Albedoâs answer came fast and sure. He paused then, realizing that, by distracting him with the weeks to come, youâd managed to give him a pocket of time to calm himself, to feel himself once more firmly planted on the ground. Love mixed with anger and sadness in his mind, and for a moment he could only marvel at you.
Albedo leaned down to kiss you on the forehead. Heâd do whatever he could to help you, this he promised himself. And this too he promised himself; youâd never ever be hurt on his watch again.
Childe
If there was anything that Childe hated it was a lack of control. The feeling of everything slipping through his fingers was something heâd felt often as a child, and that feeling had haunted him. When heâd signed up as a member of the Fatui heâd promised himself that heâd never feel that way again. Heâd protect those he loved and heâd keep his life from falling apart. It was a promise he was determined to keep, no matter what.
You two had decided to go hiking. Or rather it was less of a hike and more of a rock climb. Childe had long bragged that the Huaguang Stone Forest was the most beautiful place to watch the sunset, and youâd finally gotten a free weekend. Waypointing your way there initially, your partner had taken an almost childlike joy from choosing which mountain was the highest.
âChilde have you decided yet? The sun is almost at the horizon.â You called out at the Harbinger. Childe was, much to your dismay, the stronger climber, and had taken to scouting ahead of time to see if the spot you were climbing to was any good. Now he glanced down at you, mischief written all over his face, his smirk flashier than usual. He put his hand on his chin and looked outward once more.
âHmm⌠I donât knowâŚâ
âChilde!â You exclaimed, your arms slightly killing you. You really wish that youâd convinced Childe to bring a roped and belay. Unfortunately that request had been met with a whine and an accusation of âthatâs cheating!â Youâd laughed it off at the time, but now you were starting to regret your partnerâs recklessness. As much as you were enjoying your time â being alone with Childe always felt intensely special and you cherished every moment of it â you were also impatient to actually watch the sunset, and in your hurry you wondered if it might not be faster to climb back down and watch from the bridge.
âI do believe that weâve found the tallest one!â
âThank the Seven.â You groaned, hurrying to get to the top. Childe chuckled, watching you scale up the mountain.
âOh come now, I had to make sure it was perfect! Besides you looked so comfortable perched there, it almost hurt to disrupt you.â
âWhen I get up there Iâm killing you.â You shot back, reaching towards the ledge. Still laughing Childe stuck out his hand and you moved to grab it, pushing off with your feet as much as possible, determined to make it up the mountain in the next move.
The laughter died from Childeâs lips the moment your hand missed. Instead it was replaced by fear, cold and sharp as a knife, plunging straight through his heart. Time seemed to slow down, but you were falling so fast, falling, falling, falling. Catapulting himself off the top of the mountain Childe reached out for you. In his mind he was screaming. Glide. Oh please, for the love of the Seven glide. Please, donât fall, itâs so high up. I couldnât bear it. Please.
Still the words were stuck in his mouth, and his throat only constricted more when you hit the bridge with a sickening thud. Releasing his own wings at the last moment he landed on the bridge too, only a few meters away from where you were now crumpled up. Running over he scooped you up. Youâd managed to right yourself at the last moment in the air so that you were landing feet first, but though youâd managed to protect your head your legs dragged limply, and one was bent at an awkward angle. Looking at your mangled form, listening to you as you screamed and whimpered in pain, Child felt overwhelmed by his vast helplessness. There was nothing he could do. Burying his head in your neck he sobbed.
âIâm sorry. Iâm so, so sorry.â
The journey to Liyue was excruciating, both for you and for Childe. Although there was no external bleeding the initial adrenaline of falling had no worn off and you felt every jolt and movement as Childe slung you on his back, wrapping his arms around your thighs and carrying you to the nearest waypoint and then to the Liyue doctor. Even when Childe was standing still you thought you might die from the sheer pain. So intense it was that sometimes you gave up, blacking out only to wake up feeling like you were drowning, the burning air around you almost too hot and too heavy to breathe.
Childe willed himself to numbness throughout the journey, only allowing him to collapse once youâd reached the hospital, practically ramming into the nearest chair in the waiting room, the situation washing over him.
How could he have let this happen? Hadnât he made a promise? A promise that heâd protect those heâd love, that heâd never lose control of a situation again, that heâd never let those he cared about suffer? Where was that promise now? His whole world seemed to collapse in on itself now. He hadnât been able to protect you. Despite his training, his reflexes, his vision, his everything. Youâd still fallen. And as powerful as Childe liked to think he was, he still couldnât turn back time and stop your suffering.
Finally the doctor opened the door and Childe was let in to see you. After informing him that you were on painkillers the doctor left you two alone. Faced with you laying on the hospital bed Childe sank into the nearest chair. Lacing his fingers through yours he drew circles on your hand over and over. For a moment you two said nothing, then Childe let his head rest on your hands. âIâm sorry.â He whispered, voice raw.
âI know.â You replied, mind a bit hazy from the painkillers, the magic infused herbs luring you to sleep. Still you pushed forward, needing to say something before Childe let himself be carried away. âI know, but itâs not your fault. And itâs not irreversible. The doctor says in 8 weeks Iâll be fine. Until then, weâll just have to improvise.â
âBut what about your adventuring? Your commissions? How can you do those if you canât ââ
âIâll figure it out. Adventuring isnât just monster slaying you know. And thereâs no catastrophe in being in a wheelchair or on crutches.â You shook your head. Childe was still crying, and you could feel his tears running down your linked hands.
âAjax.â Childeâs head shot up, surprised. He loved when you called him by his true name, it always seemed like a song falling from your lips. And now that song was filled with understanding, if not a bit of sadness. âI want you to not blame yourself.â You continued. âI know itâll be hard, I know that these feelings wonât go away. And Iâm not blaming you for them. Iâm not happy about this either, of course Iâm not, I just went through a world of pain. But I wonât be able to stand watching you beat yourself up for 8 weeks, I wonât be able to stand that look in your eyes every time you look at me. So please, please stop. If not for yourself then for me.â
Childe stared at your for a while. You waited, not wanting to rush his thought process. Eventually though he shook his head, a small smile finally breaking his expression.
âYouâre too good for me you know. Alright. I promise to try. Itâs the least I could do.â
âThank you.â You smiled. Childe smiled back. He didnât know how you managed to do it, how you managed to take his fears and look them in the face. All he knew at that moment was that he loved you. And for now, that was enough.
 Diluc
Diluc stared in horror as the Fatui Bracer aimed a Geo projectile right at you, his horror multiplying into rage and terror as the concentrated energy flew through the air and landed right at the base of your ribcage. You crumpled at the impact, wheezing heavily, apparently stunned from the power and speed of the attack.
How could this have happened? Diluc knew that the Fatui were gathering in Mondstadt, something that the winery owner turned Darknight Hero couldnât stand. But never did he think to see Fatui skirmishers right outside the walls of Monstadt, strolling along the beach of Cider Lake as if it were Snezhnaya. Never did he think heâd have to see another loved one felled by a member of the Fatui, and never did he think that he could bear the emotions coursing through him now.
He made quick work of the Bracer, hacking and swinging without rhyme or reason, barely able to comprehend what was going on. Everything felt oddly separated from him, as if he were watching through someone elseâs eyes, watching as he burned through the Bracerâs shields as easily as if it were made of wax, leaving the man groaning and screaming in pain before silencing him altogether.
The feeling of separation only grew more powerful as he ran over to you. You seemed to be conscious, but your breathing was shallow and ragged, and the place where the Fatuiâs attack had hit seemed mangled, one of your ribs having seemingly been broken. You were screaming, though it was hoarse and low and tired. Still if you were screaming you were alive, and at least Diluc could hold onto that.
Carrying you in his arms Diluc winced as you let out another shriek of pain. You two werenât far from the gates of Monstadt, but every step seemed to be a thousand steps and what was surely only a few hundred meters instead felt like tens of thousands of miles.
You were going to be alright. At least the doctor had said you were going to be alright. Surely Diluc could be grateful for that? But he didnât feel grateful, instead he felt anger and hatred welling up inside of him. Heâd told himself it was no good to be an angry or hateful person, that doing so would only push you away, would only destroy the fragile bonds heâd managed to build between you and a selection of others. But still the anger and the hatred lingered, refusing to be quelled or stuffed away.
He wanted revenge. Revenge on the Fatui, on the Tsaritsa, on the uncaring world that let him be so tormented, and that so tormented the ones he loved. How could this have happened to you? You who were made of goodness, more goodness than heâd found in the world beforehand. How was this a fitting reward?
It was decided that you could stay at the Winery during the 6 grueling weeks that was to be your convalescence. Diluc said nothing on the way there. He was afraid what would happened if he opened his mouth. Already he knew his face was betraying the feelings welling within him. He didnât need to make it worse, not now.
Arriving at the Winery Diluc carried you to his room, the nicest room there was. Up to this point youâd said nothing, and Diluc wondered if you werenât too groggy to do so. However when you spoke up there was an urgency in your voice, one he simply couldnât ignore.
âYouâre angry. Youâre trying to hide it but I know it.â
âIâm not the one in pain right now.â Came a curt reply. Diluc was looking at you with what others mightâve mistaken as a glare. Perhaps it was even that, but there was something beneath it, and you knew it ultimately wasnât directed at you.
âI am. And Iâm upset too. But Iâve accepted it. You need to accept that youâre angry too. Burying it wonât help, itâll only make it worse you know. You have to acknowledge your emotions. You donât have to hide them. At least not in front of me.â
The expression on Dilucâs face finally broke. The anger there was raw and palapable, but there was also something else, something heâd also buried.
âI was⌠terrified.â Diluc finally let out. âI was so terrified it frightened me. I⌠I thought I was going to lose you.â
âAnd you shouldnât have to hide that either.â You prodded softly. âBut Iâll be alright, I promise. So please, just be open with me and then weâll go from there.â
Diluc nodded, finding himself unable to speak. Walking over to where you were laying down he peppered kisses all over your face, light and ethereal as butterflies.
Heâd do right by you. Thatâs what he promised himself, after all the hiding and the pain. Heâd do right by you. But heâd also not forgive the Fatui for what theyâd done, and tonight when Monstadt was asleep the Darknight would be watching. And for any Snezhnayan roaming the streets and lurking in the shadows, thereâd be no forgiveness.

Analysis of Kite's conflicting moralities, relationship with death, and the toll reincarnation may take on one's psyche
So, today I decided to compile all the thoughts I have had about Kite's interesting worldview since the first time I saw him into one post, mostly for my own sake, really. If you're familiar with the few posts I've made, you know it's gonna be a mess, but hopefully a comprehensible mess.
A heads up, this is going to be spoiler-heavy, and very much deal with subjects of death and dying as a whole. Also, some of these conclusions are drawn from my own experiences and close brushes with death, I'm not going to go into much detail but it might get personal and definitely dark. I'm not even sure if I can call this a meta-analysis, and I'm obviously no expert, so mayhaps take all of this with a grain of salt.
Been getting into drawing lately, and during the more simple and mindless part of the painstaking process of dotting every single star in this, I let my thoughts wander through the latest part of the fic I'm writing, and I got a better grasp on what exactly made Kite such an elusive character to me.
I'm not quite sure why I got so attached to Kite. Perhaps it was the air of tragedy surrounding him, how despite his sordid past he remained still open and gentle even if outlined by a healthy dose of cynicism.
But sometimes, I think it's the fact that he is so paradoxical. He's brave, yet fears death to such a degree that creates a whole Nen ability around it, is a pacifist yet will not hesitate to spill blood for his own sake or someone else's. Despite the many ultimatums and warnings of 'I will not protect you', he gave his arm and then his life to save Gon and Killua. He approaches each hunt and battle with a clear plan of action in mind, but his Hatsu takes the form of a roulette that gives him random weapons which are never what he wants, but what he seems to need for that exact situation, which he cannot dispel without using. When he draws a weapon, the decision is locked in and his or his opponent's fate is sealed. That's why each time he dubbs his weapon a bad roll. Every time he has to gamble, he sees himself as having run out of luck. When it comes to having to choose between himself and somebody else...well, there had never been a choice. In fact his aversion to using it may feed into its sheer power that we, unfortunately, saw too little of.
Let's go over his very first appearance when he saves Gon from the mother Foxbear.
It's not hard to see the strain searching for Ging has put on him; he's rash, prone to anger and punching a child for daring to get into trouble. In his mind, he's failing at his most important task, has not yet earned the right to call himself a hunter despite being in possession of his very own hunter license.
After killing the mother Foxbear and raging about having done so, he says this interesting line:
So yes, he finds killing for any reason rather irksome as most would do, yet I think something deeper caused him to absolutely lose it in this scene:
He had not been aware of Gon's identity, and despite being an animal lover and a naturalist, he made a choice to save the human instead of allowing nature to run its course. In fact, he says: 'No beast that harms a human must be allowed to live.'
How does one weight one life against another? How is the worth of it determined? The value of life... an impossible choice he's faced with and a choice which he seems to regret to some degree.
The Foxbear cub.
Here, he's speaking from experience, a tangible loss he has felt himself, and a hard and bitter life he does not want to impose on the cub.
His backstory is exclusive to the 2011 anime adaptation but there are hints alluding to it in the manga, for example, the fact that he does not seem to know his birthplace, or:
The choice of words is chilling.
Reading between the lines, one could draw the conclusion that he is an orphan. Something supporting this hypothesis is how he visibly deflates after Gon tells him his parents have (presumably) died.
So we see he is willing to go against his own moral code of not killing as to not doom another living being to the life he led, a lonely, hopeless existence that could barely be called one. He saw it best to put down the cub rather than leave it to die a painful, slow death.
The reason Kite himself isn't as cynical and cold-hearted as one would be after witnessing cruelty in its rawest form is those small crumbs of human kindness which he may have found in Ging.
It was not only a chance at an honorable life being Ging's apprentice gave him, but it also 'saved' him from being broken and twisted into what he hated and worst of all, death.
If we take that one minute of backstory as canon to his character-which I find myself inclined to do- these quirks of his make much more sense. He lived on the run. He lived on the knife's edge between giving up or pushing forwards. He lived as so a wrong move could be the difference between survival and the end.
Between rock and a hard place creates a mentality of black and white, absolute good or extreme evil, this or that. Except in reality, it's much harder than that. Deciding who to save and who to strike down is a heavy burden to bear.
It's almost easy to see how struggling to keep surviving could lend itself to a crippling fear of death and subsequently developing a Nen ability which once more goes against his own moral code in order to give himself a second chance...yet something about it strikes me as unlikely when I look at it this way.
Living life knowing it could end at any moment has the opposite effect, at least for me it did. One comes to accept that it is fleeting and while not eager to let it go, when death eventually and inevitably does come, there is no fighting it.
Especially when there is no hope that tomorrow will be a better day than this one.
Frequent near-death experiences numb one's fear in a way, even if it drives them to take precautions that render it unlikely to happen again and results in c-PTSD, but still, it does. It sparks a certain nihilistic view of 'if it all can end so easily, then what's the point of it all?'
Unless there are things to live for, a sure promise of a better future, and Ging gave Kite that. When he faced the threat of losing his second chance at life:
Really, what else could lead someone to develop the ability of 'the hell I'm going to die like this'?
I think a separate event, an even more brutal near-death experience that almost cost him his life as the hunter he so strived to be set him off to develop the secret roll of Crazy Slots, what I call Roll No.0, Ars moriendi. Unlike other weapons, it cannot come up in random and is directly summoned by him, or better said, summon by his overwhelming will to keep going and hopelessness of fighting a losing battle. I don't believe roll No.3 was the weapon that allowed him to reincarnate. I've named that one Wand of Fortune, a sort of armor instead of an offensive weapon since I find it hard to believe Kite, a Conjurer, would not focus on defences as well, and I will go into both mechanisms of these weapons hopefully in his backstory.
Despite knowing this battle to be a pointless one and being acutely aware of his soon to be demise, he did not immediately draw Ars moriendi, no, he stayed back and fought for the sake of the boys, kept Neferpitou occupied until they could reach safety. We can see evidence of this in the aftermath of the battle that seemed to have gone on until dawn, a torn apart landscape only signaling a fraction of the devastation that was Kite's power unleashed. It still wasn't enough.
In the anime sub I watched, when Gon apologizes to Ging about Kite's death, Ging said a sentence that infuriated me, because it belittled the utter suffering of the NGL trio.
"He would not die in your place." (No screenshot, sorry)
And I remember practically shouting at the screen, screaming 'how could you possibly say that? Of course he did. He absolutely did die in their place. How could you not know your own apprentice? Why-'
It was only last night that it hit me why Ging would say that.
Once upon a time, maybe Kite would not have given his life for anybody under any circumstances, even if he had a way out of it all. He would still need to die to come back to life.
His Thanatophobia could be attributed to the (possibly untreated) PTSD of the near-death experience in his later life, being so certain of dying that finding himself alive afterwards drove him to never want to go through that again. He quieted his fear by creating a sort of a loophole, that even if he lost the battle he would remain. Ging remembered that, but as evidence shows, something changed. Maybe he healed a bit, perhaps growing up dulled his fear to a certain degree, but eventually when it came down to his life or another's, he didn't choose himself.
Now, I can hear you saying 'but he didn't die, so what are you going on about??' And so I reply: Yes, he is alive, but he did die. He experienced that painful, horrible moment of staring death in the eyes and thinking 'This is it, this is the end', went through the actual process of having his soul removed from his body. And that moment stretches into infinity, ten lifetimes condensed into the mere seconds before oblivion.
Dying isn't so hard if one stays dead.
It's not so easy to open one's eyes and find oneself alive again after that, no matter how much that is the heart's desire. It's difficult, nigh-impossible to reconcile with life and walk amongst the living when everything had been so final, when death had been accepted to its fullest.
So Kite awakens, the twin of Meruem and back from the dead, his mind and identity both intact and fractured. In that he is Kite is no mistaking, yet he is not the same gentle pacifist whose first reaction upon sensing a monster's aura was to shield two kids from it at the cost of his arm.
I don't think many of you are familiar with Zoroastrian ideology, but Togashi is known for loving his religious imagery, and it's not only Christianism he derives inspiration from (evidence of which can be seen all over Kite's character and resurrection).
In Zurvanism-a branch of Zoroastrianism- there is talk of the twin spirits: Ahura Mazda -epitome of all that is good- and Ahriman -epitome of all that is evil-, the parent god Zurvin decides that the firstborn may rule in order to bring "heaven, hell, and everything in between."
Upon becoming aware of this fact, Ahriman forcibly tears through the womb to emerge first. Sounding familiar yet?
Zurvan relents to this turn of events only on one condition: Ahriman is given kingship for 9000 years, and then Ahura Mazda may rule for eternity.
Meruem ruled for 40 days, his death leaving the throne vacant for ant Kite, wearing a dead girl's face and seeming to be brewing some nefarious plan. No more is there any sign of that unrelenting pacifism and the sanctity of life he held so high, losing his own may have only served to show him how meaningless the pain and suffering he went through had been, dying only to be reborn as a member of the species that killed him. It may be that he has no desire to rule over the remaining Chimera ants or create an army of his own-
Yet I dread to think what a broken mind possessing limitless power might do to the world.
And that's it. If you made it this far, thank you for reading! If you found it interesting, stay tuned, as I think a lot and I will make it your problem.

My Castle of Ships {1/2} - Merlin One Shot
Summary |Â {A strange phenomenon had occurred when Arthur had been born by magic. He now had the ability to read minds. Nobody knew of his gifts. Arthur knew from a young age that sorcery was not welcomed in Camelot. With fears that his own father would banish or harm him, he kept his piece of magic to himself. a/n | {Iâve finally worked up the courage to post some of my writing on Tumblr! This has been cross posted to AO3 (Legendary_Julia) and Wattpad (GreaserGal19). Maybe one day Iâll get my usernames in order, but today is not that day. Part 2 will come out... at some point. This was suppose to be a stand alone story, but our boys deserve better. Thanks for checking me out, happy reading!}Â

A piece of magic that had become much less of a burden after he had been crowned king, and for moments like these; While he was bored and Merlin daydreamed.}
~~~
Merlin was a daydreamer, he always had been. He'd often find himself thinking of Ealdor while he puttered about Arthur's chambers. Sometimes he would imagine what it would be like to rule his own kingdom, to make his own rules. While he scrubbed away at Arthur's hunting boots, he built his own castle. The citadel would be magnificent. The walls would stand tall, glittering with a hint of magic. Beautiful tapestries would hang from every wall, depicting anything the passerby's wished. A series of tunnels would wind throughout and underneath the stone walls, eventually connecting to water. Yes, the castle would have to be by the ocean. Merlin smiled to himself as he pictured it. The birds, the sound of waves crashing against the rocky shores, and the ships. Merlin loved the idea of having ships. With a boat like that he could sail anywhere, do anything. That's what it could be, his castle of ships.
Arthur had to smile at the name. He too pictured the castle from his spot at his desk. He could only imagine the beauty of a kingdom Merlin could build with his magic. The Castle of Ships.
"Has a nice ring to it," Arthur muttered to himself, to caught up in the image to realize he had said anything aloud.
"What was that?"
"Hmm?"
"You said something."
"No, I did not."
"Yes, yo-"
"You're hearing things Merlin, go back to whatever it is you where doing. Maybe scrub a different spot before you muck up my good boots."
Arthur stood up abruptly, leaving a confused Merlin watch him briskly walk out of his chambers.
"He really has gone mad." Merlin muttered as he began to clean the other boot.
~~~
Merlin knew someone was listening. He's felt the presence in the castle for a long time, but could never quite pinpoint it. He had tried to call out many times. Perhaps there was a Druid somewhere within Camelot trying to communicate, or an evil doer with a presence too strong to ignore. But there was never an answer. He was always left alone with his thoughts, which he was slowing getting scared to think.
When the presence felt strong, Merlin would busy his mind with his daydreams. He would think of home, or add details to his imaginary kingdom.
He did his best daydreaming during round table meetings. The presence would always be strong in the throne room, the magic almost danced through the air. It was here that he added the finer details of his castle.
He constructed a grand portrait hall as Leon droned on about the months finances. The long room would have the most brilliant red carpet, lined with an intricate gold and black pattern. He could almost feel himself walking through the grand hallway as he leaned against the cold stone of the throne room walls. As he imagined himself walking along, he thought about whos portraits he would put on display. He would have his mother, of course, and Gwen, his first friend in Camelot. He could picture the cocky smirk on Gwaine's portrait and the valiant yet understanding look on Lancelot's. His eyes scanned around the round table, imagining all of his friends in their best Camelot red, striking wild poses for the artist. They eventually landed on Arthur, whose head was resting lazily against his hand, trying his best to listen to Leon. Merlin hummed to himself, placing Arthur's portrait at the end of the hallway. It would be the only place fit for his king.
He had heard once of a spell that made the portraits move within their frames, adopting the personality of its subject. He studied Arthur's face as he thought, committing every detail to memory. The way his golden hair fell across his forehead in soft wisps, and how his nose came to a gentle point, complimenting the rest of his face. His favourite feature of Arthur's has always been his eyes. A piercing blue that found him in any room they were in.
They were the same blue eyes that were staring at him now, Merlin realized, staring back, not daring to look away now. Their shared a million words with just a look, a conversation no one else would hear.
Are you as bored as I am?
When is dinner?
When will Leon stop talking?
How's the castle of ships coming?
Merlin's heart dropped. He was imagining things, right? He had to be. They weren't really talking to each other, after all. It was all in his head, somewhere Arthur most definitely was not. He was quickly becoming aware of the overwhelming sense of magic flowing through the room.
I know you're in my head. Make yourself known. I don't know what you want, but you won't be getting it.
Arthur was taken aback by the threatening tone in Merlin's voice. He hadn't realized that Merlin could sense the presence of his magic, or that he was so threatened by it. His eyes dropped quickly, looking at everything but Merlin in the corner of the room.
"Is everything alright, Sire? You looked concerned." Leon's address took Arthur by surprise. Sitting up as fast and as straight as possible, he voided his face of any emotion as he shook his head.
"Yes, yes. Everything is fine. We must ensure that patrol around the citadel continues. I've caught wind of a potential threat. A sorcerer."
"Are you sure, sire? I haven't heard of such a thing."
"Certain. I trust my sources," with a final glance at Merlin, he nodded at Leon, urging him to continue with the meeting. Â
~~~
Arthur's eyes followed Merlin around his chambers. He could hear his thoughts going a mile a minute as he absentmindedly straightened the pillows on the bed.
"There is something on your mind," Arthur said, not moving his head from where it rested in the crook of his elbow, all but laying on the table.
"What makes you say that?"
"I can see it in your eyes." Their eyes connected from across the room, but Merlin looked away quickly, shifting uncomfortably on his feet. There was a moment of silence before he spoke again,
"Something is troubling you, and I want you to tell me. Please, Merlin, there is no need to lie."
Merlin was fighting with himself, and Arthur didn't need to be a mind reader to see it. They stayed like this, Arthur looking at Merlin and Merlin looking at the floor. They both felt the heavy magic in the room, but neither acknowledged it.
"Have you ever missed a place you've never been? A place that never really was?"
"I never took you for a philosopher, Merlin," Arthur couldn't help the smile that crept onto his face, or the fondness in his eyes, "if this is about your mother, I've told you. She is more than welcome here. I know how much you think of her."
"No, it's- that's not quite it."
'Not thinking of running away, are we?" Arthur's smile grew bigger as he spoke. He knew that's what it was, Merlin had been thinking about it for weeks. He wasn't worried, though. He knew Merlin would never leave without a goodbye, and a chance to convince him to stay. The guilty look in Merlin's eyes confirmed what Arthur already knew.
"I would never! Who would deal with your royal ass everyday if I left?"
"It's a simple fix, really. I would just have to come with you. Make sure you don't get yourself killed."
"Arthur Pendragon on the road? I don't believe it for a minute." Merlin smiled as he spoke. He imagined the two of them running away, into the castle of ships.
Many sleepless nights had allowed Merlin countless hours to add onto the castle. In the late hours of the night, he added gardens and ballrooms, imagined the wind on his face as he held tightly to the mast of a massive wooden ship. Those same nights, Arthur would lay awake in his own chambers, halfway across the castle, and imagine the beauty for himself as he listened to Merlin describe his castle grounds in a way that a child listens to his mother read a bedtime story.
"I am perfectly capable, thank you," Arthur rose form his spot at the table, making his way over to the bed and trying his best not to sound too amused, " and put some wood on the fire, would you? We've got an early morning tomorrow. We're travelling to Annis' land. She wishes to discuss the safety of both our borders villages."
"Is there a reason I was not told of this sooner?"
"It's simply business, Merlin. There's no need to worry. Get some sleep, you'll need it for the journey."
"I have a bad feeling about this," Merlin muttered as he left, shutting the door tightly.
"I heard that!"
"Go to sleep!"
~~~
The knights laughed loudly as their horses carried them down the well-beaten trail. An agreement was reached between Arthur and Annis about the protection of the border villages, making it much safer for villagers in each kingdom to travel through the border forests.
"Smile, Merlin! We're celebrating!" Gwaine gave Merlin's should a rough pat as his horse rode up alongside Merlin's. He held out a water skin, no doubt filled with ale, and gestured it towards Merlin.
"You're always celebrating, Gwaine." He took a long sip before handing back to Gwaine, nodding his thanks. He would need a drink if he was going to deal with the knights for the ride back to Camelot.
Merlin turned to his daydreams as their journey back continued. He was picturing a beautiful courtyard, lush with apple trees and all kinds of flowers, when his magic started to tingle. He hardly noticed it at first, brushing it off as the change in the wind, but the feeling kept growing stronger.
Someone was watching them.
They were just leaving Caerleon's borders through a valley, the perfect place for an ambush. Merlin looked around, uneasy. His body tensed at every little sound as the forest came into view. He was fighting with himself. If he told Arthur, would he believe him? What if it really was nothing? No, his magic wouldn't deceive him like that. He looked at Arthur, who was riding a short distance in front of him.
Merlin didn't even have to call his name for Arthur to turn around. As soon as their eyes met, a look of concern filled his face. His hand came up, signaling the group to stop. He looked toward the tree line, signaling for his men to do the same. Much to Arthur's horror, it was deathly quiet. The birds stopped chirping and the wind seemed to stop howling. The air around them was still as the group looked around.
"Did you hear something, sire?"
"No. That's exactly the issue."
"If we are quick, we can make it to the trees. Find safety in the forest."
Despite Leon's suggestion, nobody moved a muscle.
They continued looking towards the trees, before Merlin gave Arthur a hard nudge. Getting ready to tell him off, Arthur turned quickly on his horse before following his line of sight. Standing atop the rocky hills on either side of the valley were dozens of men wearing loose black and brown clothing, swords and bows drawn, pointed at the much smaller group of knights.
"AMBUSH!"
The horses started going crazy, whinnying and thrashing in an attempt to throw off the knights. Swords were drawn as the bandits began to yell, running down the hills at all angles. They were outnumbered, far too outnumbered to stand a chance against even the weakest opponents. Arthur unsheathed his sword, trying to regain control of his horse.
"Head for the trees!"
Picking off only the first attackers, it was a race between time, the bandits, and making it to the cover of the woods. Taking a sword from one of the bandits bodies, Merlin was quick to follow Arthur. With his heart pounding in his ears, he could no longer hear the commotion of the fight. He could only hope he was losing them.
~~~
Merlin's head was spinning as he stumbled through the thick underbrush of the forest. He had lost his horse when he lost sight of Arthur. He dragged his stolen sword loosely behind him as he tried to ignore the searing pain in his shoulder. The bandits had been quicker than he thought, and had much better aim than what he'd like to give them credit for. He had barely cleared the trees when the arrow struck his shoulder, no doubt coated in a poison that his mind was too foggy to identify.
Things had gone downhill very quickly after that. The sun had set what Merlin could only guess was hours ago. The forest was so dark he could hardly tell which way was up. He was ready to give up finding the others. He had wandered for hours, they could've been halfway back to Camelot by now.
Merlin had stopped for a moment, leaving heavily against a tree to try to catch his breath, weighing his options as he grimaced at the pain shooting through his arm. He stayed there for a few minutes, waiting, listening to the forest. He heard the magic in the forest as it flowed through every tree, every leaf. There were owls in the distance, and the sound of insects flying by. And footsteps? Although the sword was in his good hand, Merlin was weak as he swung blindly behind him. Hearing the dull thud of metal on metal, and a familiar grunt, Merlin dared to turn around.
"It's a good thing you've got sticks for arms," Arthur huffed out a weak laugh as he took the sword from Merlin.
When Arthur pulled him into a hug, Merlin was ready to defend himself, but he was to tired too do anything but lean into the cool metal of Arthur's chainmail. A gentle 'hmff' was all he could manage.
Arthur took Merlin by the shoulders and held him at arms length, giving him a once over. It was hard to see in the dark, but he could see the blood that coated Merlin left shoulder and arm, and now his own hand.
"I would never leave you behind! How could you think that?" Arthur sounded heartbroken as he gripped onto Merlin's good arm tightly.
"I didn't- how-"
"You didn't need to say it out loud for me to hear you."
Confusion was evident in Merlin's eyes as he scanned Arthur's face, looking for any trace of a joke, but he found nothing.
"It's you, isn't it? That presence, that magic... It's you?"
"It always has been."
The magic danced between them, like it had a thousand times before, but there was no fear behind it, not this time.
"You're hurt."
"I noticed."
Merlin leaned into Arthur's arm, trying to stay steady.
"Can you walk? Let me take you to the others. We've set up a camp, we'll be safer there."
"Only if you carry me. Like a damsel in distress."
"Absolutely not," Arthur scoffed as he picked Merlin up bridal style, slinging his good arm around the back of his neck, making sure not to move him too much.
"Hey! I was kidding, you prat! Put me down!"
"Would you rather I drag you? Quit your complaining. If your swing at me was any indication of your strength, you wouldn't have made it another step." Arthur tried to hide the growing concern in his voice. He looked down at Merlin's face, which was now rested against his shoulder, and he could tell it wasn't good. He only now got a good look at what had happened, and his heart sunk. He had had knights that couldn't recover from a wound like that, where the arrow was haphazardly ripped out in an attempt to get rid of the poison it was laced with.
"Merlin?"
"Hmm?"
"Tell me about the castle. The castle of ships. I'm sure there's parts that I've missed. I can't be in your head all the time."
Merlin smiled, closing his eyes as he shook his head against Arthur's shoulder,
"It's a stupid idea."
"It can't be that stupid, you put a lot of thought into it. Have you ever thought of becoming a storyteller?"
The laugh that came out of Merlin was short and hoarse, but Arthur needed him to keep talking. They were still a long walk away from the camp, and Arthur was willing to do anything to get Merlin there alive.
"I didn't realize I had such a way with words."
"Please?"
"What would you like to hear about, my lord."
"I won't hesitate to drop you."
Merlin let out another laugh, much rougher than the last one, that quickly turned into a fit of heavy, wet coughing. Arthur continued to walk, the only sound being his boots hitting the ground for a long time before Merlin began to speak.
"The grand hall, it would stand alone from the rest of the castle. It would have a long, stone pathway for guests to walk along as they gathered for feasts and balls. It would be lined with rose bushed and allium flowers, the dark purple ones."
There was another coughing fit before he continued, "the double doors, they would be engraved. With dragons, fairies, things of magic. Did you know your shoulder isn't very comfortable?"
"I wouldn't imagine, with it being covered in armor and all. Tell me about the boats. They are my favourite part."
"What about them? I've never seen a ship, only the pictures in Gaius' books. They're fascinating, aren't they?"
He could hardly finish his sentence before he started coughing again. It shook through his whole body, making him ache.
"Come on, Merlin. Keep talking. Give me something, a thought, anything. It's not long until we'll be back with the knights. Elyan will fix you right up. Good as new, right?"
Merlin gave a weak smile, "good 's new..."
"Why do you find ships so interesting? They are just big, fancy boats."
Arthur could hear Merlin's thoughts, still going a mile a minute despite him thinking almost nothing at all.
" 's exactly it. They're big, they're fancy."
"Is there a spell for that? Could you create one?"
"A spell for what?"
"Building things. Constructing this castle, making ships."
"I'm sure I could figure it out."
Merlin shifted in Arthurs arms, trying to make himself more comfortable before hissing out in pain and trying to reach for his shoulder.
"Are you trying  to bleed out? Quit moving!"
Arthur's words came out harsher that he intended, though there was sadness in his voice. Merlin continued to wiggle until Arthur dropped his legs. Keeping one hand around Merlin's waist, he used his other hand to keep a firm pressure on his shoulder. Against Merlin's protest and Arthur's better judgment, they continued walking through the dark.
"We're not going to make it in time." Merlin was leaning heavily into Arthur's side, barely keeping his footing at he stumbled over another tree root.
"We're going to make it. You're not going dying on me now Merlin. That's an order."
"When have I ever listened to those?"
Merlin stopped walking, forcing Arthur to stop next to him. Letting himself fall to his knees, he landed with a small 'thump' on the cold ground, the blanket of pine needles and leaves welcomed him. Arthur lowered himself after him, keeping one hand at Merlin's side, his other hand reached out to rest against Merlin's cheek, keeping his head steady as he closed his eyes.
"Keep your eyes open Merlin. Come on, looks at me. Say something."
"Remember my story, won't you? You've heard me tell it a thousand times. Built that castle of ships. For me?"
"I won't build it unless your there to see it. Open your eyes, Merlin, please." Arthur felt hot tears roll down his face as he looked at Merlin. His friend, his best friend, his only friend, was going to die.
Merlin opened his eyes slowly, only getting them halfway opened before they became to heavy to move. Arthur moved the hand on Merlin's waist to his back, gently pulling him into another hug. They sat like this, in silence for a long time, Arthur not daring to pull away.
Arthur started to hum a gentle tune in a last ditch effort to break the silence, not trusting his own voice to not break if he spoke. It was a tune he had caught Merlin humming hundreds of times. It reminded him of the warmth of the castle, how comfortable he was when he watched Merlin go about his duties from his spot at his desk, listening to the story of a magnificent castle being built and the mighty ships that gave it it's name. It reminded him of all the times he had to stop himself from revealing his piece of magic to Merlin, to tell him that he wasn't alone, that he wasn't hated.
The quiet song came to an end and Arthur stopped, listening to the sounds of the forest and hoping to hear a voice amongst the gentle rustle of trees, but he heard nothing. There wasn't a cough, nor a cry or a snarky remark, not even a thought. It was quiet, deafeningly so as Arthur began to cry. Long, ugly sobs were the only sound as he pulled Merlin closer to him, begging, pleading for him to move, get up, say something, kick him, yell at him, anything.
But alas, there was nothing. Only silence as Arthur continued to cry. He cried for the loss of his friend, his dearest friend. He cried for the loss of the kingdom they never got to create with each other.
He cried, sobbed, begged, and bargained. But that too, only ended in silence.
AN: ask and ye shall receive (^_<)ăâ this is kinda angst hhahahahha
â haikyuu | jealousy.
includes: sawamura, ushijima, akaashi, bokuto
taking requests here
⌠sawamura âŚ
clear-headed captain turned WORMS FOR BRAINS
itâs so bad because even asahi and sugawara are like?? wtf happened
his jealousy is ire, scathing and scarring anything in its wakeÂ
you come up to school one day with your newly transferred cousin cause your mum asked you to show him around and daichi sees you two walk VERY CLOSELY to each other from the gates and heâs fuming
he knows he canât walk you to school everyday because of early morning practice especially since itâs near nationals surely you wouldâve understood, right? you didnât have to go and get another guy to walk you, right?
heâs so angry he doesnât realise he crumpled up the forms takeda sensei asked him to hand out to everyone for their trip to tokyoÂ
you walk up to him and youâre like âdaichi, hi!! let me introduce--â and he just CUTS YOU OFFÂ
âoh so THATâs how it is? and who are YOU? why are you walking MY GIRLFRIEND to school? huh? care to answer, pal?â
its so embarrassing literally everyone is looking at himÂ
heâs pointing his crumpled up forms at your cousin, trying to tower over him but daichiâs too short so heâs tip-toeing
youâre so embarrassed you whisk your cousin away and just shoot your boyfriend a glare
he begs for forgiveness at lunch after you text him âthat was my cousin i told u about idiotâÂ
âyouâre so dumb sometimes,â you mutter as he hugs you. daichi nods against your shoulder and kisses your temple, âi know... iâm sorryâ
⌠ushijima âŚ
not a lot of people thought ushiwaka had it in him to express some petty thing like jealousy
BUT, just like in the qualifying match against karasuno, heâs suddenly alight with newfound anger and hurtÂ
ushijimaâs blunt and monotonous--two permanent fixtures which you have grown to love
but NOW? now itâs horrible because heâs fucking pissed having caught you simping over a player from the opposing university team his coach invited for a practice matchÂ
he storms up to you the second the referee blows the final whistle and blocks your line of sight to the court and youâre like ?? waka whatâs going on and heâs glowering
you sort of inch away from how intimidated you areÂ
âif you find me unsatisfactory, i would prefer you talk to me directly instead of filling up your needs with the enemy.â
âthe enemy?? what are you talking about waka whatâs going on?â
and he steps aside and heâs like âiâve seen the way you look at number seven, you cannot lie to me. now what is it that makes you so drawn to him? let me know and iâll better myself so you wonât have to look at anyone else.â
and youâre just stumped cause he said this while youâre sitting with your friends (who are squealing in amusement at this interaction, you swear youâll get your revenge but now...)
you pounce onto your boyfriend, clinging at him like a koala and profusely apologise, saying heâs perfect and that heâs everything--you were just distracted because that guy was so beefy it took you by surprise
and he goes--in the most DEADPAN tone known to man--Â âvery well, iâll increase my strength training starting tomorrow.â
⌠akaashi âŚ
heâs an over thinker and he quickly blames himself for things that are out of his control which makes him prone to self-sabotage by thinking about his insecurities
itâs no different when it comes to jealousy
perhaps, heâs the most jealous character on this postÂ
it takes little, small things, building up the voices in his head as they chip away at his confidenceÂ
heâll see you get a confession and even though he KNOWS youâve rejected it, the smile you give that boy is blindingÂ
next heâll find a new email on your lockscreen--some guys from the other class asking you out to watch a movie with them
and, finally, heâll catch you and bokuto in a hug as his teammate twirls you around and he loses itÂ
you saw him and youâre like âkeiji!! come here--â but heâs dashing out the gym, trying his best to not let the tears fall
itâs outside in the chilly october night did you take his head between your hands and forced him to look at you, reciting reassurances and pressing soft kisses to his wet cheeks
it takes a while, but he finally understands and you feel the warmth of relief blanketing you bothÂ
⌠bokuto âŚ
like akaashi, heâs victim to his insecurities and acts out in a way thatâs almost comedic and annoying because he knows any other alternatives (sobbing, hiding away for days, not eating) are frowned upon, more concerning
he doesnât want to burden you anymoreÂ
so he shouts and screams, whines until his teammates are begging you to talk to him. to fix this thing between you but youâre so clueless you decide to ask your boyfriend what was wrong anywayÂ
and heâs teasing, grinning at you but the light doesnât quite reach his eyes and thatâs when you know somethings wrongÂ
âkou, seriously. please, tell me. what happened? did i do something wrong?â and it takes him a while but when you do coax it out of him you wish you hadnâtÂ
âa few girls in my class were passing around this paper and they said they were voting on who was the hottest guy in our year... and i saw your name but you hadnât voted for me so i just thought that...â
he sounded so broken and frail you wanted to kick yourself for ever even playing that game and for agreeing to your friendâs dareÂ
you rush to explain it to him, tears welling up your eyes as you plead for understanding even though you know you donât deserve itÂ
âi donât know... iâll... i think i need some space,â he says after you explain. you couldnât do anything but nod as he walks out of your classroom
he forgives you (in time)Â
In this post, I go into a long, defensive character/ship study for reflection after New Blood so for the sake of not clogging the tag and anyone who doesnât want to see it or doesnât want to be spoiled, itâs under the cut.
I think if you are looking for Tim to apologize for some of those early days, you are going to be disappointed. At least for a while. Because Tim sees a lot of what he did as practical training methods heâd use on any other rookie. Whether thatâs right or wrong in your opinion, doesnât matter. Itâs how Tim sees it and therefore how the writers intend for him to see it. For all else, any time Tim crossed a line: he was called out, acknowledged it himself, apologized and/or thanked Lucy for her help.
A lot of those things were what Tim was going to do to any rookie if he thought that was the type of training the rookie needed. Tim says he is a show type of guy. He isnât just going to tell a rookie the wrong or right method. He is going to create a scenario in which they learn it the hard way but in a safe, controlled environment. He was going to kick Jackson out of the car if he got the answer wrong, but Jackson got it right. And when he realized Jackson needed a different type of training to help him get over his fear of gunfire or quit or else Angela would get fired, he changed his tactics. And both times literally end up saving his own life. Lucy knew exactly where she was when she radioed that Tim had been shot. Jackson ran down the armed guy shooting at Tim because Tim said if he couldnât get into the fight to stay in the car, so Jackson found a way around that.
The way Lucy words it, it doesnât sound like she believes that Tim tormented her all through the job. Just that first day (well, and the second but Iâll give them the benefit of the doubt that those first 2 shifts can be treated like a first day) and some time after. Because the next thing she mentioned as a month later is the bathroom incident. That happened the day Tim came back to work after being shot. In between time which she spent an entire shift with Officer Wrigley(?) who was nice and treated her like a rockstar, and was boring because he wouldnât take interesting calls. She is stuck with that until Tim questions if she is just going to let a criminal get away when she can do something about it. She called him a pain in her ass which he responded was the job. In that moment you can see that Lucy is not going to back down, and that Tim sees this as how to best train her. Their reactions of each other shows a mutual understanding of the other and the start of an acceptance. And maybe Tim does torment Lucy a little all through the job just to keep her on her toes.
As to the bathroom incident: in Amber, Harper made a point of saying how important it is to find a proper bathroom so thatâs obviously something they teach at the academy or veterans learn through experience. And Lucy knew to secure the bathroom which she did. Just not enough. And Tim knew that would probably happen so he took advantage of that. Just as he would if any other rookie who needed that type of training had done that. This happened before he got the call about Isabel. The things he did after, intentionally starting a fight with the biker gang, that was out of line because he was upset about Isabel. And Lucy called him out on that. Just as she has done every time since Tim has stepped over the line.
I donât believe Lucy actually gets triggered when she walks into a shoe store. Exaggeration to prove a point through humor. I laughed anyways. Especially since Iâm sure the things that actually trigger Lucy are more like complete darkness and locked in confined, tight places. Does he say boot more than anyone else? Yes. Does that change depending on the outward image Tim is trying to convey? Also yes. The hardass Tim was those first few days/weeks/months (depending on which timeline we are going with) is not who he truly is. And Lucy knows that. She sticks up for him more than anyone. She calls him out on his shit, but also reminds him he is a good person. That side of him only comes back out when he truly fears not being tough will cause a setback. Such as when he yelled at her for having something in her gun hand other than her gun after Chris was shot and his TO pointed out that he told him how to proceed and his rookie didnât listen. And Lucy wasnât even mad at Tim about that because by then she knows him and what he is like. All her anger was at Emmett for stepping in where he shouldnât. Because Lucy can handle herself, and she can handle Tim. Which Tim knows perfectly well and has said so. If Lucy was truly so upset by all that Tim has done, she wouldnât insist that they are friends. Yes, she was eager to get out of training, but she also took the time to ensure that they had proper acknowledgment as to the closure of her training. And an acceptance that they would be friends from this point on was admitted by both of them in that âsee you tomorrow.â
Iâll grant you the lessons can go overboard, but they actually work. When Lucy was in that bomberâs house after he set a bomb, she told Harper to get clear of the house and radio for help. Why? Because she learned that radio frequencies can sometimes set off bombs. She never forgot that lesson. And used it as payback for Tim later so double bonus.
So here is where Lucy can differ from any other rookie trained the same way by Tim. She learned those lessons and remembers them later when she is more or less by herself. Itâs not just something that can be told and hope you remember when the necessary time comes. It is something lived through experience, again in a safer and more controlled environment, that she remembers. Maybe not all rookies would, but she did. And where she differs is how she gets Tim back anytime she feels he needs payback: stealing his money clip, giving him her bar tab as an evaluation, giving him his own powder bomb, etc. Things no other rookie would dare try, and he lets her get away with it. Because I think he actually likes that he found someone who can match his diabolical ways. Honestly, if these two werenât such good people at heart, theyâd pair up to be the worldâs greatest supervillains.
Jackson called Lucy out on why would she want Tim to torment someone else if she hated how he treated her. So either she didnât have that big of a problem with it or she doesnât like the implication that it was something wrong about her that Tim felt warranted that kind of treatment. Yes, Lucy needs praise. She has always needed praise. Especially from authority figures. (Yes, I know the implications of that from a shipping POV, but if you are already shipping Chenford, youâre either ignoring it or waiting until itâs no longer an issue or both.) Itâs clear from her relationship with her parents that she at first tried to get it from them. Thatâs why she studied psychology. To please them. And once she found what she wanted and stuck with it, she thought theyâd be happy for her and sheâd get that praise but she didnât. She is still looking for it in her life. So she looks at this situation as there must have been something wrong with her and somehow the new rookie is better. Which Tim disproves. It wasnât about her being less than; itâs about her being different and needing different training tactics. And her differences are actually things Lucy values, and Tim values too (clearly as he is tried to get Barnes to see policing as helping people and not as engaging enemy combatants. Plus take a look at how Tim treats people in the community even ones he previously arrested. He still tries to help them.) But Tim recognizes Lucy also needed a different perspective even if her perspective still ultimately wins out. Which Lucy acknowledges in Resolutions. She still chooses to be a cop in her own way. She still values empathy and compassion first and foremost. Seeing the world as the scary place it can be just rounds out her perspective, but it doesnât overwhelm it. And Tim stopped pushing that perspective after Lucy found out just how scary the world can be. Because Lucy has been though all of that, gained perspective but still stayed true to herself, she is a good cop. Again, something Tim acknowledged. He disavowed her of the idea that she was somehow less, explained his position, and complimented her with probably the highest compliment he could give someone: the respect of being a good cop.
That difference in how Tim & Lucy approach things is what made them such a great partnership. Tim sees things with suspicion first, compassion second. While Lucy is compassion first, suspicion second. They both quickly adapt to either, but also help the other with finding the necessary POV. So they hardly ever miss anything because if one doesnât see it, the other will. They are complimentary but not so stubborn in their own initial POVs that they force the issue making things worse. If one is passionate in their belief, the other will follow their decision.
So here is my point: whatever they went through before, good and bad, does not have a drastic effect on discouraging their friendship (and possibly romantic relationship). All of that is more or less fond (okay not so fond) memories. They understand each other, have forgiven each other (Lucy more than Tim because Tim crossed more lines), accepted their faults, encouraged each other, acknowledged each other, and basically formed a lasting bond that is more than TO/rookie and even more than most friendships can be lucky to have. Perhaps even more than most romantic relationships get. And frankly, holding any past mistakes over each otherâs head to the point of disgruntlement would not lead to a healthy relationship. Which is why I donât think Lucy truly holds what Tim did against him. I think it was as it appeared: wondering why the new rookie was treated differently and if that is a reflection on her. Which it wasnât in any negative way. But to make her point about the differences, Lucy had to list the ways Tim handled everything in their early days. And to make his point, Tim clearly explains the differences and what necessitates that difference. An apology for any of that would negate the point he was making. If Lucy was truly upset in any lasting way, she wouldnât have immediately worried about Barnes, and she wouldnât have been so happy at Timâs compliment.
Will Tim ever apologize for the early days? Maybe. Maybe not. Does he need to? I donât think so. Not for me anyways. Because Tim is a show me type of guy, and he has shown Lucy in so many ways how much he values her. And Lucy has shown that that means more to her than anything.
Needy: William, Lovecraft Fanfiction
Authorâs Note: Hello again! I hope you all have been well. Conjured this up last night and had to post it! Itâs smuttier than the last, sorry, but not for real lmao. Happy reading! Let me know what you think! Taglist/ Requests are open! To be added or removed hit my asks! Thank you! (SN: He doesnât have a last name on the show, as far as I can remember, so I made one up. Thanks)
Pairings: William x Reader, Lovecraft Fanfiction
Warnings: Smut. Language.
William Bradford owned the law firm at the edge of downtown, perched on a corner, and lit by the streetlight, where he called the area a prime spot. There was no denying that there was a surplus of business flowing from the place; he was well known for having the legal talents to handle almost any case; it was irksome, sometimes. You stood at the frosted door, wondering if you should turn around; it had been a few days since you last saw William, and the last conversation had not ended on good terms. He had tried to call four times that you knew of, and you only knew because he left a message with your roommate. It was a risk to even leave a message with her; she already had doubts that your relationship with him was platonic.
The walk from uptown had given you time to think of why you were here in the first place; you were no longer content with the status of your relationship. No, there was not too much that could change, but you had a proposal that William would find interesting.
It took a few minutes, but you decided to enter the office; you did miss him after all, and walking the distance you did deserve at least a small reward, even if that was just seeing his face. The phoneâs trill ring occurred every five seconds, and the curvy secretary did not seem to have enough hands or ears to get to them all.
âBradford Law Firm?â She said with a deep sigh. âNo, apologize; he is busy for the afternoon.â A moment of silence passes, and then she shakes her head as if the person on the other line could see her. âYes, William has 3pm tomorrow available.â
You say nothing stepping away from her desk while slipping the gloves from your hands. The chill of the fall had started to take over outside. You loved the change in weather; youâd discovered it to be sexier for William to have more to take off when he had the chance. The walls of the office were basically bare; only the photo of his beloved car and his law degree had the privilege to be on them. He loved things simples, in decor but not so much in relationships. The relationship between the two of you was everything but simple.
âMs. YN.â She looked up from her desk with a warm smile, but her eyes bared the truth. The secretary was not fond of the two of you; you didnât care, though.
âHi, Caroline.â You waved. âMr. Bradford and I are having lunch.â
âI do not see you here on the schedule.â
 The door opened in front of you, and he appeared. The navy tailored suit fit him, well, accentuating the slender cut of his waist all while flaunting that he indeed was from old money. âMs. Y/L/N, how can I be of service?â Williamâs hands were shoved into his pocket as he leaned against the wooden doorjamb. âLegal troubles?â
âNow you know damn well,â Your throat was dry all of a sudden; you cleared it subtly and exhaled. âOur lunch date,â You laughed, hoping that he would not embarrass you in front of this woman you barely even like.
âI was just informing Y/N she was not on the schedule.â
âOf course, she is not on it; she does not need to make an appointment for lunch or for anything for that matter.â William moves from the door with the slight swagger in his walk that youâd grown accustomed to walking from afar, and one thing was sure it looked better up close. His eyes carefully examine you from head to toe, pausing at the cream pencil skirt that halted just above your knee. He swiped his hand over his mouth and then smiled at you. âHow are you?â
âTired, I walked from across town for our lunch date, and you arenât going to offer me a seat.â The harmless flirting in person was the closest thing to foreplay youâd manage to display. You return the lustful look, dragging your eyes over his body, stopping to meet his eyes.
âForgive my manners or lack of any.â He sucked his teeth, turning to Caroline. âIt appears you have earned yourself a long lunch. You can return at two.â
âThatâs two hours.â She scoffed in protest.
âI know.â His lips were pursed in a fine line, displaying his dismay in her questions. âI stated it would be a long lunch.â William took her jacket and purse from the hook behind her and handed it to her.
âWill you need me to bring you anything to eat?â
âI plan to eat in.â He stated with a smirk. The words instantly making you clench your legs together. âHave a good lunch Caroline.â
The dismal did not last long, for as soon as she took her belongings, he was in front of you. His arms cornering you against the wall and nose gently rubbing down the line of your face. âI called you yesterday.â
âI was studying.â
âAnd thatâs a good reason to not answer?â
âYou lived, didnât you?â
âBarely.â He answered.
The door closes, and your fingers wrap around his tie, tugging him closer to you. âI missed you.â you smile, hoping it would ease the sting of ignoring him for a day. William needed to be told no sometimes, you spoiled him. Always answer his beck and call; no was a good thing.
Then perhaps you should act as if you did.â William stepped back, taking your hands from his tie and cocking his brow. âDid you pass those tests?â
âYes.â You beam at him. âGlad you care.â
âI always care.â
âYou werenât allowing me time to study, keeping me up all hours of the night.â The first step into his office is calming. This place was where you first met; heâd taken up being your lawyer for a small civil suit. There hadnât been a need to come here multiple times a day other than for him to fuck you. You were addicted to the feel of him, the charming cadence of his words, and the magic of those fingers no matter the circumstances.
âWhy walk across town?â William took a seat at his desk, adjusting his tie and then peering up at you. âI could have easily come to you.â
âI felt bad about not seeing you this past week.â The softness of your voice is unexpected, but the small truths come out when you are vulnerable; you knew this.
âThen you should have come over when I asked.â He adjusted the papers on the table and clears his throat. It was not in his character to not embrace any vulnerability in you, even when he was mad at you. He was that gentleman. Â âIs this an apology, Y/N?â William waited for your response.
âI donât think I owe you an apology, William. I wanted to talk to you about some things that have been heavy on me, though, if you have the time.â You take one step towards the desk, and he holds his hand, halting you. âWhat?â The tension lay thick in the air.
âI just know that if you walk over here, we wonât get to talk, and you claim that is why youâre here anyhow.â
âI want,â you paused. What did you want?
âWhat?â He folded his arms over his chest.
âYou.â The weighty word floated from your lips precariously.
William motioned you over to him, and when you were in reach, he had his hands on you. Wet kisses trailed up your neck to the rose petal-soft lips that graced your face. If it was possible to be worshipped through touch, William had perfected it. His fingers lagged soft lines up your legs, pushing the pencil skirt to allow easier access. The talented lips sung rushed kisses that turned into slow lulls, mixed with nips from his teeth and tastes from his tongue. He was everywhere, and you loved it; you wanted more. He breathed heavily once he pulled you over him; your legs dangled on each side of him. William loved the feeling of you on top of him. The weight of you was overwhelming; the sound of your moans when his hands traveled up your exposed thighs to the line of your underwear than to your soaked middle. Two hours seemed like a long time, but in truth, it was nothing two the two of you. You pushed your skirt up higher, allowing you to feel his cock through his pants.
âIâm going to ruin this dress.â
âI have to walk back uptown.â
âNo, you donât.â William pushed the curls from your face and looked up at you. âI will take you back to your place.â
âYou sure about that white boy?â Your teeth graze over his earlobe, only feeling more intoxicated by him while continuing the playful banter. âNot your side of town?â
âWherever you are, is my side of town.â He pushes his two fingers in your mouth. âSuck.â You opened your mouth, taking them in your mouth, sucking for a moment, and they were gone, back in between your legs and pushing into you expertly, causing you to bow from him. You exhaled, locking eyes with him as he started his pursuit. William pumped his fingers into you, massaging your clit with his thumb each time they entered you. Your pussy enveloped them, welcoming them in like old friends and that they were. There was no room for a coherent thought, your head fell back, and eyes rolled as he started to fuck you with his fingers. He had barely even touched your clit, and somehow you were drenched for him. âYouâre so needy.â He laughed.
There was no patience in your next movements; you reached between the two of you and unbuttoned his pants. His dick pressed against his boxers. Usually, there was a rhythm to these things. He liked to get undressed at his own pace and fuck you slow. This was not today. William stood, throwing you onto the scattered papers on his desk and spread your legs wide for him to admire you.
âYouâre not allowed to run today.â He gave a small smile before he unsheathed himself, pumping up and down himself a few times. William hovered over you; his dick flinched warm over the entrance of your pussy. âUnderstand?â
âYes.â You shook your head, you never really intended to run, but there was only many so many times you could cum.
William places his thumb on your clit and then slams into you, hilt deep, your body quakes taking all of him and reveling in pleasure. âSweet Y/N.â He groans, his teeth clenched as he starts to fuck you. His hips snap onto your body, knocking your body up the desk. The tips of his fingers dig into the supple flesh of your thigh, pulling you to meet him at each thrust, and your hips naturally wind. Grinding on him, allowing that extra tease of pleasure to your swollen nub. The deeper he sunk into you, the more intense the pleasure grew. He pulls out of you, swiping his heavy cock down your slit and then tapping playfully only to flip you over. Your ass is sat up just for him; you didnât want him to stop.
Impatiently you rub yourself against him, feeling him jump against your skin, and then chuckle. âCalm down, sweetheart.â The charming lull of his voice is followed by his hand, pressing the arch of your back and him slamming into you. Sweet delicious sting flooded through your entire body, setting each nerve afire with a tingling sensation you could not stop. Your body shook against, and he continued to fuck you, guiding your hips to meet his thrust. Your feet hovered over the ground, and you were more than grateful for the desk holding your body because had it not been there, you might have floated away. He made you feel weightless. Your toes curled as the high pitch mewls exclaimed your ecstasy. How the fuck had you gone a week, better yet a day without him?
The flowers on the corner of the desk crashed to the floor, the glass shattering and water spattering. William didnât care; you gripped the table as he growled, and he snapped his hips on your ass. William was chasing his high, and it was inside of you. He fucked you deeper, leaning his body over yours fully and then spreading your legs wider for better access. You imagined what you looked like spread out on the desk beneath him, unable to stop yourself from coming over and over, and one thing was sure, you were needy. How in the fuck could you not be? He slammed into you once more, and this time he grew harder, releasing himself once he was deep enough in you, and then he continued to fuck into you. He wanted to savor the moment just as much as you.
There was a mess made of the office, his clothes, and yours; there was no redemption from it. William didnât seem to mind; he fixed himself to the best of his capabilities and then turned his attentions to you, adjusting the mess of curls atop your head and then straightening your skirt. âWhat are your plans for the evening?â
âCleaning, maybe reading.â
âNo studying?â William wiped the remnants of the lipstick from the side of your face and cupped your face making sure your eyes were on him.
âI hadnât planned it.â
âGood, then come home with me.â When you said nothing, he rolled his eyes, âYou are not the only one that is needy.â
âI can do that.â The smile on your face was not able to be erased at the moment.
William draped you in his coat and placed the fedora atop his head. He opened the door, not expecting to Caroline there; the permanent scowl on her face did not phase him or you for that matter. âCaroline, glad to have you back. Cancel my meetings and clean the office.â Her mouth dropped, staring at you. âAfter that, you are free for the afternoon. Good day to you.â
Points of view â The Interview: Luca Marinelli
How do you approach your characters.Â
Sometimes I also wonder how I get to the character. For âNon essere cattivoâ, I had a very detailed script and a fascinating director at my disposal, so I didn't struggle to relate. It was a very brave script for the way it dealt with reality. At first my auditions went in the direction of Vittorio's character but also knowing the figure of Cesare, more than once I thought I would like to play him. I saw the auditions of others and I stopped to think how I could have done Cesare. Then at a certain point I remember that Claudio looked at Valerio and told him that it would be better to reverse the roles, to let me try Cesare, and so it went. When I read the script of âLo chiamavano Jeeg Robotâ, the first thing that struck me, besides the courageous imagination, was to understand how a film of this kind could be made.Â
In the first part of your career, you brought an image of introverted and staid youth to the screen. Was this a choice.Â
Absolutely not. Or rather yes, it was the choice of those who met me first. Perhaps a part of my personality has been seen that could best marry the characters in question. It happened both in âLa solitudine dei numeri primiâ by Saverio Costanzo and later with VirzĂŹ in "Tutti i santi giorni", then it can be said that with Casare of âNon essere cattivoâ and the Zingaro of âLo chiamavano Jeeg Robotâ I was allowed to turn things around slightly, to play a character who had a disposition and behavior that was completely the opposite of what I had faced previously.Â
What do you remember about your debut with Saverio Costanzo.Â
He was my initiation into cinema, I came from the Academy and I had no idea what it was like to work on a set. The best memory, in addition to the experience of the film with him and Alba, is the first meeting, the first audition, where I really understood that I strongly wanted to work with him and that if this had happened I would have ended up in the hands of a great author.Â
With that film you found yourself in the main competition of the Venice Film Festival. What memories do you have of that first time at the lido.Â
Of a huge confusion and a big headache. We were tossed around from one interview to another and not only that, because the worst thing was always answering the same questions, and I was terribly worried not to make the situation even more boring for the machine operator, who never changed, and I don't think could take it longer to hear the same phrases over and over. Fortunately, Alba was there as well and saved me in more than one interview. The experience helped me because the following times I knew slightly more what I was going through and how to manage situations and keep stress at bay. Or maybe not yet, it's a long way.Â
I noticed that when you talk about your job you do it using the verb âto playâ (giocare). Is it a coincidence or the choice has a precise meaning.Â
Perhaps itâs not a coincidence that in English the term recite is said precisely in this way because in my opinion to play, or the French jouez, represents the feeling of freedom and fun that is inherent in the job I do, better. As far as I'm concerned, the moment of the take is when the actor has to stop thinking, abandon worries, to be able to bring out the energy of his character. He has to play with the same seriousness and commitment with which a child does. I remember a piece of advice from Carlo Cecchi on the fact that in acting counts listening and the here and now. Being actively present to oneself and to others at that exact moment.
You have a method for achieving this condition.Â
If someone asked me something about technique, I wouldn't know what to answer, apart from listening. On the set of Andrea Molaioli's film in which I am the father of the young protagonist, the actor who plays him, Ludovico, who is really good, full of talent and very smart, once asked me what was the technique to make the best of the character, and the only thing I felt able to advise him was to try to be present in that moment and then to let go, listen and not think about the rest.Â
But I imagine that there are also practical aspects in the preparation that precedes the start of filming.Â
As for me, I try to prepare as much as I can before arriving on set because at the start of the shoot it would be good to be ready. But not everything happens automatically, in the sense that you canât always find the character immediately. However, I have always been lucky enough to have more or less long periods of rehearsal before starting a film. I remember this moment with Saverio and Alba, where we spent weeks among us and also with the kids who would have played us as children, to try the various scenes and to create a union and harmony between the characters. The same happened with Paolo VirzĂŹ, Thony and I, more than once we gather, facing the script, to clarify all the passages and moments of the scenes.Â
And how did things go with Claudio Caligari.Â
The same thing also happened with Claudio even though the illness made everything more complicated for him. He asked us to change our bodies, to participate in the auditions of the other actors. This allowed all of us, the cast, to integrate and develop a unity of purpose and a truly rare familiarity. So in front of the camera it seemed to me that the gang, to which Cesare and Vittorio belonged, was really part of my life, that it wasnât hard to pass from Luca to Cesare, because I had found him. And always to identify with the environment of the story, I preferred a house in Ostia, and Alessandro often came to me from Rome to spend time between the two of us. Claudio, in addition to having reading meetings together, also showed us films that were a source of inspiration for him for this film, such as âAccattoneâ by Pier Paolo Pasolini, âRocco e i suoi fratelliâ by Luchino Visconti and âMean Sreetâ by Martin Scorsese.
Instead, I wanted to ask you what happens between takes, for example when you come home after a day of work. You stay inside the character as it happens to Daniel Day Lewis, or you put it aside and think of something else like Marcello Mastroianni did.Â
I try to disconnect from the set. I try. I go home and try to do something else, but the last thought before falling asleep always goes to the next day's work plan and I leave myself a few minutes for the memory and concentration useful for tomorrow and then I close my eyes. Â
We asked Roberta Mattei and we ask you too. During the processing you were aware of the exceptional nature of what you were doing.Â
Yes. Let me explain: I saw with my own eyes that what was happening was exceptional, a man who was dying wanted to give his latest work to the public, to his audience, to his people, to people. This has no equal for me. Don't think about yourself in such a situation but about others.
Then it was the turn of Lo chiamavano Jeeg Robot.Â
I shot Jeeg Robot in March 2014, and therefore before âNon essere cattivoâ. The fact that Mainetti's film is only coming out now is due to the long post-production period necessary to assemble the shot with the special effects present in the film.Â
Here as well it was an interpretation and a character who completely overturns the transparent and pristine image of the first part of your career.Â
To make Jeeg Robot we had to convince each other, Gabriele Mainetti and I, about my success in the character. I pushed him towards a theatricality and Gabriele towards a real madness, a pure pain. In the end, I think we have found the right amount.Â
The construction of the Zingaro was already very clear in the writing and it was up to us, however, to find its true aspect.Â
Guiding him is this crazy and boundless ego, and the obsession with having to leave a mark. The Zingaro's eccentricity is partly reflected in his look, halfway between a rock star and a suburban bully. For the costumes and make-up we were inspired by the great rock icons. We dared in some choices, such as the black coat with pink leopard lining that characterize the wardrobe. For the aspects related to the way of performing, his model was Anna Oxa and in particular the video of her at Sanremo, when she sings âUnâemozione da pocoâ.Â
In part you have already answered, but I wanted to know how you choose to accept the proposals that are made to you and if you have any foreclosures towards television, or more generally towards commercial cinema.Â
I choose the proposals on the basis of love at first sight that must happen with the film, with its screenplay. Then figure out who will be leading the film, meet the director. I don't have any kind of foreclosure, let's say that if I don't like something I don't do it and if I like it I do. And it doesn't matter if it's cinema or television.Â
As a spectator what is the cinema you love.Â
I like films that have something to say and that I also choose based on who directed and starred in it. Usually when they ask me to name some titles I have a void. Think that the same thing happened to me also during the audition to enter the experimental center, when Lina Wertmuller asked me the title of a film I had seen recently. I was struck by a cosmic void and instead of naming her an authoritative and important film I left her stunned by citing Batman, I think Nolan's first, still a good film, but I still had Wertmuller in front of me... But to go back to what you asked me, I tell you that in general I always like to watch films that come from Sundance, of which I remember, for example âLike Crazyâ, which I found disarmingly beautiful, the films of P.T. Anderson, Wes Anderson, the Cohen, there are many, and among the Italians those played by Alba Rohrwacher, Valerio Mastandrea, Elio Germano, Kim Rossi Stuart and directed by Alice Rohrwacher, Costanzo, VirzĂŹ, Sorrentino, Garrone, Salvatores. Without forgetting those of the great Joaquin Phoenix. But in reality I look at everything, let's say that I try not to lose anything of these.Â
Despite the certificates of esteem you have received for your performances, the impression is that of an understatement that almost seems not to be aware of what you have achieved so far as an actor.Â
Whenever I see a film of mine I always think there is something I could have done better. But basically I'm happy with what I've done so far. Having said that, I think that the films alone should be enough to explain everything and that the interviews donât add anything new to what there was to say before making them. But when I am in the dance, when I need to promote, I am committed to doing it in the best possible way. I strongly think that in life and at work itâs important to demonstrate that you know how to do and not to show at all costs that you do.
Why Naqib in The Boys sucked
Image description: fictional character Naqib in Amazon Primeâs show The Boys.
(Is the fire in the background an excuse to use racist Yellow Filter to show how exotic he is? Hmm.)
I first posted this on my blog in Dec 2020, and since nothing in superhero media has changed for the better at this time (September 5th, 2021), Iâm going to keep talking about it.
Because nobody else does. So, without further ado:
WHY NAQIB SUCKS.
I was a big fan of The Boys season 1; I love superheroes, I love deconstructing a genre. Sure, it has its problems, but overall I enjoyed season 1 and thought the show had potential.
(Thatâll learn me for being hopeful!)
When season 1 ended with this big build up of mostly nameless brown and background characters as Muslim terrorists (deep sigh) we the audience are left thinking this one Muslim character (Naqib) whose superpower is to blow himself up repeatedly (insert another long deep sigh here) is going to be The Big Bad of season 2.
I had my misgivings about that direction. Firstly, as you can see from the image of Naqib, he is highly exoticised and is walking around bare chested with Arabic writing on his chest. He looks more like a generic western media depiction of a genie than he does a supervillain.Â
And yet he's the first prominent Muslim character in superhero media I've seen in YEARS.
(See my post about MENA and Muslim character good guys, including Joe played by Marwan Kenzari in The Old Guard, which is technically a comic book movie but itâs not what Iâd call âcaped and costumedâ superheroes so itâs more... superhero adjacent.)
I follow superhero content closely and as far as I'm aware the last time we saw any named Muslim characters in superhero movies WITH SPEAKING LINES was:
Instance 1) Iron Man 1 back in 2008 with The Ten Rings in Afghanistan, showing multiple Muslim characters as baddies/terrorists, but only two of them as a named character and with any meaningful lines to say. And despite one of them, Yinsen (actor Shaun Toub), being a good guy he still dies! Which is common in western media for Muslim and MENA characters.
Note: Fellow Iron Man 1 castmate, actor Sayed Badreya, makes an important point in this GQ article: "I die in Iron Man, I die in Executive Decision. I get shot by everyone. George Clooney kills me in Three Kings. Arnold blows me up in True LiesâŚ" (x)
Instance 2) A more recent instalment in Batman V. Superman in 2016, with some unnamed 'General' character and mercenaries/terrorists in Nairomi, Africa, referred to only as "the desert" throughout the movie. All reference to the General's actual name are available in an extended/deleted scene only, so a very poor and vague depiction in the final cut.
Instance 3) The generic and badly written âbad guysâ in Wonder Woman 1984 (2020 movie), which was honestly such a racist depiction of Arabs and Muslims that many critics pointed out we hadnât seen a depiction this terrible since 1994â˛s True Lies. (At least most critics were in agreement that WW84 movie was generally terrible, so thereâs that.)
And that's it, those are the only major instances showing any Muslim actors or characters in a caped and costumed superhero movie.Â
Some other fleeting glimpses of Muslims onscreen:
Glimpse 1) I spotted a girl wearing a hijab among the nameless and unspeaking background characters of Peter Parker's class in Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019). A first for Marvel movies, apparently.
Glimpse 2) Disney Plus show Falcon and Winter Soldier (2021) had two nameless Muslim characters walk by in a scene thatâs supposed to be Tunisia (using Yellow Filter), and âthankâ the present American Air Force (eye-roll).
Glimpse 3) Netflix show Jupiterâs Legacy (2021) had a nameless Muslim sailor conversing with one of the main characters in a scene, with meaningful dialogue about racism. (WOW. Really good.) Bonus: no yellow filter. Itâs a pity heâs a nameless background character because this brief instance is the least problematic MENA rep Iâve seen in ages, but it is very brief.
I just wrote about Glimpses 2 and 3, and how the Netflix show outdid Disney when it comes to these nameless walk-on Muslim characters.
This is pretty pathetic overall, these small crumbs, especially compared to better rep and probably the only instance of legit MENA superheroes in a âcostumes and capesâ style superhero show, the Tarazi siblings on DCâs Legends of Tomorrow.
-
Anyway, now Iâve listed what crumbs are available across the live action superhero genre, back to The Boys.
I was intrigued about how season 2 would handle Naqib and any characters relating to him, and what storyline they'd use.Â
Was I excited at the possibility of seeing Muslim supers onscreen? Damn straight I was. Did I mind that they were baddies? Well, yes and no. When you only ever get crumbs or no crumbs at all, you tend to get excited over one stale old crumb.
After the build up for season 2, I eagerly sat down to watch the first episode, only to have the first five minutes of episode 1 Trigon him.
Note: who's Trigon, you ask? Well if you didn't watch the DCEU's Titans show, Trigon was The Big Bad who was hyped up throughout season 1, introduced in the season 1 cliff-hanger episode as this big 'oh shit!' moment for the cast of heroes, only for him to fizzle out like a wet fart in the first episode of season 2 while the show pivots wildly in another direction.Â
Exactly what happened to Naqib in the first five minutes of The Boys season 2.
Erm, so, Naqib. Farewell, I guess? As a character you briefly appeared in 2 episodes, portrayed by a different actor in each (Krishan Dutt, and Samer Salem). It seems the writers used you as a plot device when they needed a cheap cliff-hanger for a direction that ultimately went nowhere.
Am I disappointed? Yeah, I am. Overall I thought season 2 of The Boys was weaker than season 1, but I'm not here to talk about the whole season: I want to talk about Naqib and this missed opportunity.
The Boys and its showrunners sell the show as being a satire of recent and well known superhero content, of all the big movies and TV shows. There's been a lot of patting themselves on the back for calling out overused tropes in superhero media (and sometimes they've done this satire well: see the LGBT marketing scene with Queen Maeve in season 2), but my issue with the show on their Muslim rep, or should I say lack thereof, is if your show has even less Muslim character rep than the content you're trying to parody, how is this a win for satire?
Naqib and that whole angle came across as a lazy, half-assed swing from the writer's room. Sure, perhaps a lot of the non-Muslim and non-MENA audience won't even notice, as we've been ignored by western media or made into nameless, generic, vacuous baddies for decades now. Non-Muslims and non-MENA just accept that we're always the baddies for no particular reason at all (which feeds into Islamophobia, by the way) and The Boys' writers could say they are simply satirising the tropes already present in media...
But, and this is a big but, the media that The Boys is satirising has already made a step toward better inclusion and representation: Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan), Marvel comics' first Muslim superhero, is entering the MCU as a lead character in her own Disney Plus show, debuting in 2022.Â
Ms. Marvel/Kamala Khan is also cited to appear in upcoming Captain Marvel sequel, The Marvels (2022), which will be a major movie.
The MCU has also cast a Muslim actor (Mahershala Ali) as the lead in a reboot of Blade. That's going to be big news when it starts filming.
So to the showrunners on The Boys, I say this: now you've done this small angle of 'all Muslim characters are terrorists, yuckity-yuck!' like we've seen in major superhero movies thus far, and you've brushed that aside in favor of focusing on other whiter villains, my question is will you come back to Muslim and MENA characters again? Or is that all you got?
Because if that was ALL, then the current score is Disney/MCU:02, Netflix:02, DCEU:02, and The Boys: a big ZEROÂ as far as Muslim and MENA rep goes.
Here is my post on good guys, featuring Old Guardâs Joe, and Blindspotâs Rich Dotcom.
Hereâs my post about the Tarazi siblings on DCâs Legends of Tomorrow TV show.
And, if Marvelsâ Eternals gets released on schedule for 2021, we will have a MENA actor portraying a supporting character. I just hope Marvel gives him a name.
Summary:Â In the eyes of a child named Daisy, Alfie Solomons is a thing of adventure books and mythical tales. As she grows he seems to morph to even more mythical proportions. That is, until Margate shows Daisy just how mortal and human Alfie is. ONE SHOT.
Characters:Â Alfie Solomons, Child OFC, OFC
Word Count:Â 3.3k
Warnings:Â Language, S5 spoilers
A/N: Wrote this a while ago but only recently picked it up again. I had plans to write a fic about Nora (Daisyâs mom) and Alfie but this ended up happening instead lol. x-posted from AO3.
When one grows up without a father, people assume a terrible fate befell him. The War. An accident. Perhaps he had found himself in trouble with one of the many gangs that ran the streets of every city on British soil. His absence could be explained away.
When one grows up without a mother, death is often called upon as the excuse as well. Childbirth. Influenza. Beatings no one saved her from.
But in certain cases, the father is simply gone and the mother still lives and breathes. Daisy was one such case.
Her mother, a lovely woman named Nora, had dreams. Visions of a house, a garden, and a job to keep her steady. Daisy was a part of the vision, but not a part of the journey thus far. So at her grandparents cottage she stayed. Six years old, knowing her mum was somewhere else, trying her hardest.
The day Nora came for Daisy was one of excitement. Tears. Good-byes from her Papa and Gran, hugs that melted into her skin. A buzzing ecstatic feeling as they boarded the train, heading to a place called London.
"It's all new there for us, Daisy," Nora had said. Pretty in her makeup and burgundy cloche hat. "A life for us, eh? Me and my girl?"
Daisy was not expecting to meet a man that week.
At six, she'd met her fair share of men from her grandparents' village. Her mum had never brought around anyone other than her uncle Harry. So this man was something new entirely.
Daisy had thought he maybe had been a bear before he was a man. Towering and scruffily bearded, he was an odd one.
"This is little Daisy, then?" He had asked. Voice low, accent unlike the Liverpool one she had lived with all her life. He spoke with a curiosity and a kindness, deep blue eyes twinkling.
"That's her," Nora answered, beaming. "Daisy, this is my lovely friend Alfie."
He offered a hand. Daisy stared, then gave a glance to her mum. A supportive nod, and her tiny hand met his.
It was not unlike her grandfather's, or Uncle Harry's. Worn and slightly rough on the pads, work showed it's time through calluses and small light scars. It was warm though, gentle as he shook hers before enveloping it in another large hand. Daisy couldn't help but admire his rings and the small crown tattooed into his skin.
Like a man from the pictures, she thought to herself, giving a pleased smile. Like a pirate. Or a king.
One thing Daisy learned, as she spent more time with her mother and Alfie, was how much he spoke and how rapt her mother's attention was to his words. He spun stories, rambled about the folk about town. Posed hypotheticals at Nora who would answer after a long pause. Alfie would always include Daisy, posing the same questions or asking about life in a quiet village.
Years passed. Daisy, in her infinite child wisdom, came to understand some of the nature of Alfie besides his sweetness. That he was just as she had suspected, a pirate and a king. He terrified others, kept the men in the bakery in reverence of him.
She came to understand her mother as well. A woman with muted glamor, someone with quiet dreams that slowly seemed to materialize. She was not the princesses or damsels in the films or books Daisy consumed. No, she was something of a beautiful warrior.
Daisy thought of herself as an adventurer. No one feared a child of her age, and she had no one who needed her protection quite yet. Instead, she was a wily spirit, content with exploration during the day and a cozy home with her mother, and quite often Alfie, at night.
It came as no surprise at the age of nine when Alfie sat her down and explained he had asked her mother to marry him. Truly, it felt like a long put off event, and Daisy had just wanted it over and done with.
Alfie's laugh filled the sitting room when she told him.
"It's not always that simple, Daisy Bell," he said. "But I'm pleased, your mum expected you to take the news hard. Not sure why, but you are full of surprises, yeah?"
And so, on one afternoon that had gifted pockets of sun, Daisy watched as Alfie made her mother his pirate queen. Daisy, in turn, became a pirate as well. And with her new place as the daughter of a pirate and a king came new lodgings.
Not a ship, but a house with many rooms. A place for her toys and baubles, and a new wardrobe to hang the pretty things her mother liked to dress her in. Daisy quite liked to sneak into Alfie's study, staring at the little collections that lined shelves. On the occasions she snuck in while he sat at his desk, he'd call her over with a wave of his big hand. A sweet would appear, followed by a kiss to the head.
"Don't tell your mum," he'd whisper in gruff tones, "or she'll 'ave both of our heads for spoiling your dinner."
It was those moments she liked best, when the two of them would hold a small secret. Daisy knew Alfie and her mother had their own secrets, whispered under their breaths as if Daisy would pay it no mind. Talk of bread, of a man named Shelby. Nothing that ever reached her in her fortress.
And in that fortress protected by men led by Alfie, who as Daisy neared eleven, seemed more pirate than king, she thrived. Played with the other children, took pockets of Yiddish they taught her home to practice with her mother. Spent hours feeding treats to Cyril behind her parentsâ backs. Tormented Alfie's men with silly games and questions they usually had no answer to. Ollie was her favorite. He had taught her to play cribbage in the moments where his time wasn't completely occupied with Alfie's commands.
There were long stretches where Alfie did not return home, only giving a phone call to calm Nora's nerves. Her mother would get whispered conversations; Daisy was given sweet words and a gentle good night or morning. Daisy contented herself with this, until one day Alfie did not return.
************
"He's gone to Margate," Nora explained, rubbing at her tired eyes. They seemed to grow more tired with each passing year. "I haven't heard from him yet, Daisy. Perhaps tomorrow we'll get a ring."
The call did not come. Daisy thought of terrible fates that befell kings and pirates. How easily it could happen to a man whose business kept him in hushed conversations. How her pa, dear Alfie, could be struck down in crossfire with the polished guns he kept locked in his study.
When a letter came, and with it a terrible wail from the beautiful mouth of her mother, Daisy knew she was right. Wished it not to be so; that there had been a terrible mistake and the news written was wrong. But sneaking a look at the letter when her mother had finally let it out of her grasp, Daisy found her worst thoughts had not been bad enough.
Alfie's wonderful handwriting lay before her. Asking forgiveness of Nora, then of her. A betrayal to the Shelby man detailed Alfie's demise. A desire to end a painful, cancerous existence that he had never spoke of to Daisy.
Another letter detailed his condition. Alive, but for how long would be up to him. Where he could be found in the winding streets of Margate.
With no noise, she returned the letter to it's envelope. Daisy took care to walk quietly, letting herself hang at the entry of her mother's room. For the first time in many years, she crawled beside her in the vast bed, letting a desperate hug melt into her skin.
On the eve of her twelfth birthday, the house with many rooms lay barren. Everything had been packed and sent to Margate, which Nora explained would become their new home. Daisy had seen her mother hold back tears as they locked the doors for a final time. Her house and her garden that had materialized out of her dreams since Daisy was very small was no more.
Camden Town had too much risk lying to the north to bring Alfie back even in secret. He was no longer a king, but a ghost of one. They were to follow the ghost, live in a haunted home by the sea.
In that haunted home, Daisy helped place Alfie's collections and her baubles on shelves. She ignored the moans from the guest room, which had become a makeshift hospital ward. Instead she practiced her piano and read on the balcony to avoid the noise. Wished that Cyril, wherever he had gone off to, was by her side to help her ward off the ghost that lived here.
Alfie haunted her, night and day. He haunted her mother more, once he became more coherent and spoke his rambling nonsense to her. More than once she had heard Nora's voice raised behind the oak door, and no reply from Alfie. Her mother was not an angry woman, but Margate in those early months had sparked like a flint and filled Noraâs glamorous face with a rage-fueled fire.
As time passed, Daisy returned to her schooling. New friends were found, and so was a sense of normal. Her motherâs anger had become smoldering coals, and she started to leave the house. Sometimes for pleasure, other times for business still left from Camden Town. Daisy wondered often if Alfie, who remained behind the closed door, envied their comings and goings. She wondered more if he missed her, months separating the moment she had seen him in a gauze mask till now.
***********
On an unremarkable Sunday afternoon, her mother had gone out for some air. Daisy had been left to her own devices, plunking out a song on the piano in the sitting room. A voice, one she hadn't heard in more than a gruff whisper in weeks, sang out:
"Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer do!â Â
He was awake. Calling to her, it seemed, with a silly song he'd sing to tease since she was small.
"I'm 'alf crazy, all the love for you!â
Daisy rose from the piano bench, wood upon wood scraping quietly before feet plodded to the guest room she avoided. Now, though, the call from within was irresistible.
The door groaned silent as she peeked in, black curls slipping around her shoulders. There in bed lay the man she called father. A man in a pitiful state, but lucid.
"Daisy Bell, sweetie." he managed to crack a smile. "I'll cover up this nasty face of mine if you like, yeah, I just need to see that cherub one of yours."
She stepped in, trod closer.
"It's all right," Daisy remitted. "Will it always look like that?"
Alfie took consideration. "It won't always be as red, yeah, but it'll still look like a gnarled fucking tree. Maybe it'll smooth one day, but it's stuck, love."
"Then don't cover it," she said quietly. "If it's forever, I need to get used to it."
"Wise words from the mouth of babes."
"I'm nearly thirteen." A slight bristle shook through her voice, reminding herself of her mother. "I'm no baby."
"Is that right?" Alfie shut his eyes, heaving a grumbly sigh. A few beats passed, and he opened his good eye. Deep blue, like the ocean at night. Daisy sometimes sat on the balcony of their townhome and watched the waves roll in and out. Alfie's eye held no waves, just stillness.
"Well, if you're such a grown woman now, with wisdom and maturity beyond all our years, right, you'll fetch your dad a thimble of whatever Mum's got in that fancy bar cart she had to have, yeah? A secret between us grown ones, so I can partake of the earthly pleasures again."
Daisy's face hardened. "Mum says you can't."
"A biscuit then. With a strong cuppa." Noting her doubtful looks, he gestured to his face. "The tea to soften the biscuit so this old man can chew softly."
Daisy gave him a doubtful look, but obliged. Wondered how many times he'd asked for small tokens from the nurse or her mother and was promptly shut down. She returned, biscuits and tea in hand.
"You have my undying gratitude, Daisy Bell," he said.
He seemed quite happy, but Daisy couldn't tell if the biscuits or her presence was more the cause. As he dipped a corner of the biscuit into his tea, she thought how silly it was for a ghost to enjoy afternoon tea. She couldn't help an amused smile.
"What's that you're giggling about?" Alfie asked. His own mouth drew into a devilish grin. "You do something funny to these biscuits, ey?"
"No," Daisy replied, smiling wider. "It's a silly thought is all."
"I haven't heard silly thoughts in some time, just a nurse droning on and on about health and tablets. Indulge me."
For the first time in many months, Daisy felt heard again. Hands grabbed the wooden chair next to the wardrobe, scooting close to Alfie. She even let her forearms rest on the side of his bed, close enough to feel warmth not usually becoming of a ghost.
"Well you see," she started, "when we met when I was very little, I saw your rings and tattoo and thought of the men in the books my Gran would read to me. All while we lived in London, I thought of you as a pirate king."
"Is that so?" he chuckled, taking a sip. "Reckon you were a pirate princess then, weren't you?"
"Something like that." Daisy grinned before looking away at the wall. "After Mum got the letter and we couldn't bring you home⌠Well, I felt like you were a ghost. Like I've been living with a ghost this whole time in Margate."
Alfie didn't respond. Daisy had known he wouldn't; the wound on the soul was still as raw as the scar on his eye.
"But just now, seeing you eat,â she continued, âI found it quite funny to see a ghost eat a biscuit and enjoy a cuppa. All ghosts should be that funny, I think."
"Do you?" Alfie heaved a great sigh, then chuckled. "Better to be a ghost with a sense of humor and an appetite for sweets than a man who's lost both, yeah?â
Daisy nodded. The more she let what he had said rattle about in her mind, the more she came to understand the thankful truth of it. Though she mourned her pirate king, Cyril, and the house with many rooms, Margate and its ghost with his biscuit and tea had their own comfort.
She once again was a child who had a father with a terrible fate that had befallen him. A dozen excuses could be made for his absence but Daisy knew this time, at least, that in secret he still existed. The little secrets they shared had grown to one of great magnitude, like ones of novels and myths.
âIâve missed you.â
Alfie, who had finished one of his biscuits, eyed her up with that twinkle she loved so dearly in the still dark blue iris. The cup clinked against the saucer as he set it on his lap covered by a blanket. Daisy felt the familiar roughness of his hand as it grasped hers.
âSo have I, Daisy.â He gave her hand a squeeze, the feeling less ghostly than she had imagined. âSomeday, I promise you, Iâll be out of this terrible fuckinâ bed and you and I can do whatever pleases your sweet heart.â
âThat could be a very long time,â Daisy answered. âIs it okay for me to come back in? Will Mum be upset?â
Alfie took a pause.
âI donât think so,â he decided. âAnd if she does get upset, it wonât last. The rotation of faces will do me good, yeah? That nurse sometimes makes me feel more ill by her presence alone, sheâs got a particularly sour smell to match her face. The sooner Iâm out of this room, the better Iâll be, I think. The sea airâll do me some good, donât you think?â
Daisy nodded again, vigorously. If Alfie thought the sea and the wisping salt against his face would help him be less a ghost and more a man, she would believe it too.
âWe can go walking together,â Daisy suggested. âIn the afternoons when I come home from school. And all day on weekends. Mum said sheâd buy me a swimming costume for the summer, maybe we could swimââ
Alfie interrupted with his distinctive laugh, a near giggle unexpected from such a large man. The first time Daisy had heard it she had been taken aback, only to laugh along. Hearing it now was like a balm slathered on a skinned knee.
âWeâll start with a short walk, sweetie, then think about swimming in the next distant summer when these limbs can carry this old man easier. If I try to swim now, right, I might be swept away into the sea and some fantastical creature may happen upon me and drag me to its home in the depths. You believe in mermaids, love?â
âNo.â Daisy sat back in the chair. âNot anymore.â
âPity,â Alfie answered. âI saw one once at a carnival; pretty thing with a tail blowing bubbles under the water. If anything were to drag me out to sea, Iâd choose her.â
âStay on land, then!â
Alfie looked at her, quieted by her outburst. Daisy hadnât meant for the words to leave her mouth so loudly. But all the talk of leaving once more sent her deep into a place of fear.
âI donât want you to leave again,â Daisy tried once more in a softer voice. âI donât want you to even try.â
âThen I wonât,â Alfie replied simply. âIâll ignore all those siren calls I hear from the beach and stay right here, on your orders. Youâre the boss, then.â
âMum said sheâs the boss now.â She shifted in her seat, wondered how cold the tea sitting on Alfieâs lap had gone. âHer and Ollie, she says.â
âRight then, youâll just have to be my boss, wonât you?â Alfie shut his eyes. Daisy inspected his face, riddled with red scars and the patches of scaly rashes around his scalp he had explained as an affliction called psoriasis when she questioned it. He opened his good eye, giving her a quick smile. âKeep me in line and give me my orders to follow. First order is no following mermaids, got that love, what else should I heed from you?â
Daisy had never had that kind of power before, giving orders to an adult. The men at the bakery heeded her silly requests before, yes, but Alfie had always been the one to bark orders. As a child on the cusp of thirteen, it was an immense responsibility. She racked her brain, lips pursed as she ignored Alfieâs amused face, before settling on one.
âGet well fast,â Daisy finally said. âAnd donât make Mum cross again, Iâll know if you do.â
âA tall order, that last one, but Iâll do my best,â Alfie grunted, tapping her hand before saluting her. âYes maâam.â
-Henry-
The minute he woke the next day and the alcohol had worn off; he instantly regretted his actions. His head was pounding and his nose stuffy, which was always what the morning after a drinking fest looked and felt like for him. the pain in his head made him painfully aware of everything heâd said to you. More than half of him wished he would have just held his peace and moved on, but the other side of himâthe stubborn bull side felt nothing but satisfaction from what heâd done. It was time, especially seeing that you completely had the wrong idea about who he was and his character. He couldnât help but wonder what you thought about your conversation, but instead of dwelling on it, he decided to push it to the side and do the logical thing. Move on.
 It was now five days since that conversation, and though it felt strange the first couple of days to not send you a message when you ran across his mind, he did it and adapted. He now was throwing himself into work because there wasnât a shortage of it. Most days, he was in pre-production for Witcher two, and that in itself was a lot of work. Production decided to kick fight choreography up a notch because last season wasnât badass enough. The choreography this season was definitely taking it up several notches, and it meant more long hours of training and even more potential for him to be hurt.
By week two post convo, he was steadily counting down to his vacation time. Training was kicking his ass, and the more and more days that passed, the more he thought of you. That wasnât all though, the more the way he thought of you changed. In the beginning, he thought he was infatuated or possibly obsessed. When he was around you, he always felt as if he wasnât in control. He felt like there were forces that were controlling your interactions and pulling a starry blanket over his feelings. He expected this time away to act as a purge, but it hadnât, not in the way heâd anticipated.
 âCome on, her name is Becca, and sheâs super cute,â Alisha said.
 âWhy is it that all my brotherâs wives want to set me up?â
 âBecause we care. Youâre too great of a guy to be alone,â Halley complimented.
 They all nodded, and his eldest brother painfully squeezed his cheek.
 âPlus, look at this face,â Nik teased, making all of them elate.
 It had been like this since they were kids. Nothing had changed.
 âIâm perfectly fine being alone,â he answered.
 âDoesnât mean you should be,â Amee piped out.
 No matter what, he said it wouldnât be good enough until he gave them what they wanted. He had no intention of doing it, though. He wasnât sure if it was really his loathing of being set up or because he didnât want to pretend to want anyone else. Whatever it was, it had him declining to their annoyance. He could stick it out for the next two weeks until he got out of London.
  -Aliya-
âYou fucked up, plain and simple,â Amaya blurted out as she flipped through a magazine.
 You rolled your eyes and tried to continue writing notes to the song youâd just wrote. As sure as you were that it was pitch black outside, you knew she wasnât doneânot by a long shot. A minute passed in silence, but as projected, Amaya began again.
 âJust explain to me why you donât want to be happy.â Amaya tossed the magazine aside, giving you her full attention. Still, you ignored her and kept your eyes glued to the note pad.
 âLiya, come on. At some point in your life, youâre going to have to be honest with yourself.â
 She was right. For the last few weeks, youâd spent a lot of sleepless nights doing just that. Since Henryâs call, youâd been forced to look at your situation in a light youâd ignored. It wasnât that you were doing it maliciously. It was just easier and neater to see the worst in every situation hence the worst in people. Youâd been the girl who dug deep for the best in people and only focused on that and their potential for too long. It made more sense from a survivalist standpoint to be different.
 Youâd went back and forth and round and round your situation, and perhaps you were too quick to jump to conclusions. The bottom line was the things he said had affected you, more than you liked and more than you could ignore. A few days after his call, you saw his picture in The Sun. He wasnât alone. It looked like heâd had a long night of partying. You deduced it was probably the same night he called you. Though he was obviously drunk, he still looked so damn good. In the last few weeks, youâd thought about him a lot. On several occasions, youâd taken up your phone for the sole purpose to stalk his Instagram or even scroll through your gallery to gawk at his pictures. Never though, did you attempt to call.
 The main reason was that you hated being the one in the wrong. You hated feeling like the asshole and what was worse was that you also hated apologizing. So, you bit your tongue, pushed your thoughts and emotions aside, and just hoped time would make it all fade. It didnât.
 âAliya!â
 Closing your notepad, you stood. âWeâre going to miss the flight.â
 âWhatever! Itâs a private jet. Itâs your private jet.â
 You were already out of the room, which meant thankfully, you didnât have to see her face. The drive to the private airfield was about forty-five minutes. For the entire ride, you could feel Amayaâs annoyance with you. she didnât say one word. Instead, she kept her nose buried in her phone scrolling her life away. It was okay with you; you had plenty of work to do. Plus, you knew this wasnât over, not by a long shot.
 Sure enough, twenty minutes into the flight to London, she was back at it. The difference between Amaya and Alicia was simple. Where Alicia liked to leave me be until she knew the perfect time to go in because she knew the perfect time would come when you would be more receptive to it, Amaya preferred to go in all the time. She was always on one hundred. You loved both your best friends dearly, and they both spoke to different sides of you, but sometimes you wished they were wrong a lot more often than they were right.
 When you got pulled into a phone meeting, you were grateful and even more so when it lasted for almost two hours. By the time you ended the call, Amaya was napping. Though you thought the silence was what you wanted, it was a blessing in disguise. It meant you now had peace and quiet to think, and your thoughts more often than not went right to Henry.
 When you landed in London and checked into the hotel, it was after midnight. Once youâd taken a shower and answered a few emails, you popped two sleep aids in hopes they would knock you out because you needed all your energy tomorrow.
  -The Next Day-
Hectic was an understatement for how your morning and afternoon had been going. One of the great things about being you was that when you got bored with one career avenue, you had three more to distract yourself with. For the last several months, youâd been focusing on your acting career and had been able to complete two films and three guest appearances. In between acting gigs you were also able to do a few modeling events, including Fall and Spring fashion week.
 What had fallen to the wayside was your singing career. It was almost time for you to fulfill your contractual obligations by releasing another album. Youâd been focusing on writing new material for the last few weeks, and tonight you were putting on one of the last stops on a mini-tour your team had planned months ago. The travel alone was killing you. You were exhausted, even more than usual. With every show, you felt your body telling you it would soon be time to slow down or stop for a few months. You needed a break.
 âI should have flown in days ago. I hate feeling like this isnât perfect.â
 âAliya, itâs fine,â Alicia countered.
 The perfectionist in you didnât believe her.
 âI promise. I wouldnât lie to you. You have to go anyway. The show is supposed to start at six; itâs already three.â
 She was right. Though you hated it, you would have to cross your fingers and hope things looked cohesive. After finishing up the last-minute wardrobe adjustments and a quick pep talk with your dancers, you made your way back to the hotel to get in a little bit of pampering before having to get back to the center for prep.
 As you laid on the table and enjoyed your deep tissue massage, you allowed the worries to float away. There was nothing you could do about it now anyway. You were also sure it was perfectly fine, and just your obsessive nature taking over. Tuning everything out, you focused on your meditative breathing. Before you knew it, it was time to get back to the center to get into wardrobe and put on a show worthy of the hundreds that were spent on tickets. You were determined to perform your ass off.
 -Henry-
He couldnât have gotten out of tonight no matter what. Heâd tried. When Charlie announced to everyone that Heather had made plans for their adults' date night, he rolled his eyes. Now that he thought of it, it was around the time that Amee tried to set him up with that woman. This was supposed to be a blind date, and since heâd declined, he was here alone while all his other brothers were snuggling up and whispering to their significant others.
 Here he was an hour and ten minutes into your show, and heâd never had more fluctuating thoughts and feelings. At first, it was surprise; then annoyance, then it transitioned into awe until it moved to arousal and admiration. Now he was stewing deep in all of them, and it was not a good look. Your voice was incredible. Heâd always known how talented you were. Your stamina to dance and sing blew his mind. Then when he watched those dance moves closer, it was impossible to keep his thoughts pure. It also didnât help that the outfits you were wearing only fueled his imagination more.
 âWhatâs wrong with you? You said you liked Aliya Taylor,â Amee shouted over the music.
 Plastering a smile on his face, he nodded. âYeah, sheâs great. Iâm tired.â It wasnât a complete lie.
 When you came out for the final song in a flowing low cut white gown and barefoot, he staggered backward when he envisioned you walking down a flower aisle.
 âFucking hell!â
 All eyes snapped to him, and the curious looks on their faces only had him needing air even more.
 âIâIâm gonna get a head start to the cars.â
 Not waiting for a response, he turned and walked through the crowd, not daring to look back at you.
   -Aliya-
Amaya and Alicia laughed together at something on Amayaâs timeline. No doubt it was some picture of one of her boy toys. You sipped from your flower decorated porcelain teacup while staring out over London to the Eye. Just behind it, Big Ben stood tall and proud as it chimes for four oâclock echoed through the city. This was a city youâd spent a lot of time in thanks to your grandparents on your fatherâs side. Not as much time as theyâd like, but there was only so much free time you had. Big Ben and the Eye were two of your favorite things about London.
 You should have been on cloud nine after another successful show and checking another thing off your extensive to-do list, but you werenât. You felt almost as gloomy as the rolling clouds in the sky that threatened rain.
 âYou seem depressed.â
 Aliciaâs voice had you turning back to them you softly smiled. âIâm not.â
 âYou look it,â Amaya slid home.
 Rolling your eyes, you finished your cup of tea and gently placed it on its matching saucer with a shrug. âI donât know what to tell you then.â
 Amaya then gasped with a smile in her eyes. âI know what it is. Youâre finally missing your grade A prime beef of a man.â
 Snorting, you shook your head. âOh god. Try again.â
 âYou might be right, Mya,â Leece started placed her elbows on the table to peer at you closer. âThis all started the night we had dinner with him. Whatâs his name again?â Both of them pretended to wrack their brains to remember his name, but they knew damn well what it was.
 âAh, Henry,â Amaya cooed, making you roll your eyes even harder.
 âBoth of you stop. Youâre not funny.â
 âWe approve.â
 âI second that,â Alicia added.
 âWhat? Really?â
 âAre you kidding? Yeah. Not only is he gorgeous, like drop dead gorgeous, but he is also super nice. Throughout dinner he was very courteous and sincere. You know Iâm a good people reader,â Amaya attested.
 âHeâs funny, and he seemed to be genuine with his efforts to get to know Mya and me. He also was putting in effort into proving something to you.â
 Sighing, you took a few sips of your water.
 âHonestly, I couldnât find anything wrong with him.â
 âReally? Perfection?â
 You couldnât believe your ears. Yes, youâd suspected they liked him, but the perfect word was just uttered. It was never spoken of, not by them.
 âPretty much,â Amaya doubled down.
 âWow.â
 âTell me about it. Move on that before some other chick does. He will not be single for long,â Amaya added.
 For some reason, this was the first time youâd thought about that, and you couldnât believe it. She was right. He was gorgeous, among other things, and women already fawned over him. He wouldnât be licking his wounds much longer. A knot formed in your gut, and a sour taste in your mouth followed. Glancing away from their penetrative gazes, you looked around the restaurant and nearly dropped the water glass when you saw Henry across the restaurant laughing. This was the first time youâd seen him in person since your breakfast in New York weeks and weeks ago, and he looked great.
Your eyes drank him up, taking their time soaking up every detail of his face, the slight stubble that decorated his chiseled jaw, his perfectly imperfect smile, his hair that fell slightly longer than you remembered. When he spoke again, you watched his mouth move and quickly got lost. You didnât have to hear his words. You knew how he spoke them. You knew the effect his voice had. At the thought of that effect, you peeled your eyes away and tried to keep them on either Alicia, Amaya, or the table. Of course, it was impossible. Your eyes continuously found him, and it was on him they remained until you forced yourself to look away.
 âWhat do you keep looking at?â
 Amaya glanced around the restaurant. You knew sheâd found him because when she turned to face you again, her smile was as wide as a thief's.
 âOh ho ho, looks like fate is on mine and Leeceâs side.â
 âStop. Be cool, act natural. Donât make a scene,â you pleaded.
 âLook at that, same place, same time, just mere feet away.â
 From the tone of her voice, you knew she was tempted to fuck with you.
 âStop, Amaya. Donât.â
 âWhy?â
 Trying to keep your voice down and the panic from your face, you pleaded again. âJust donât.â
 Amaya studied you for a few moments before she nodded in defeat. Relief flooded you. Though you tried, you couldnât get your head back onto lunch and off of him no matter how you tried. The three of you left shortly after passing his table on the way out.
 Thanks to a little free time, you, Amaya, and Alicia were able to soak up some shopping in London and before getting back to the hotel for a quick change, then dinner. Even though you tried to stop thinking about Henryâs face earlier, you werenât the least bit successful, but you played it off like everything was cool. You didnât know if you fooled either of them, but you really didnât care. You were so ready to get the hell out of London.
  -That Night-
Big Benâs chime for one in the morning ringing out all around you. It was yet another night of sleeplessness. From your seat at the window, you could feel the nice breeze. It still smelled like rain, but for whatever reason, the rain was staying away. Finishing your glass of wine, you sighed out and nearly leaped out your skin when your phone rang in the quiet room.
 âHello?â
 âWhatâs wrong?â
 You smiled from the unexpected sound of your gramawâs voice. It was like the concrete gate you had around your heart that was constricting it to the point where it was challenging to breathe loosened.
 Sighing, you leaned back, reclining against the surface.
 âI think I fell in love,â you whispered.
 âIn love?â
 Hearing the words said back to you made you close your eyes and shake your head.
 âYeah, at least I think thatâs what Iâm feeling. I canât sleep well, not that I could before. I feel a little depressed, and I canât pinpoint why, but when I think about it, I feel this way when I think about him. Not to mention, I think about him all the time. Christ, I even dream about him.â
 Pausing, you glanced at your phone to find his picture there. It was the last thing youâd been looking at before tossing your phone away.
 âI truly feel like I did something wrong, like I was wrong,â you confessed.
 âHave you talked to him?â
 Hitting your head back, you groaned. âNot since he called me and told me Iâm missing out on him and gave me all the reasons why I should realizing Iâm missing out.â
 You couldn't help but smile at his words as you remembered them.
 âDo you feel like youâre missing out?â
 Your Gramaw always knew the right questions to ask. She was one of the few that did, one of the few that youâd even listen to. Bowing your head, you sighed again.
 âMaybe. Normally Iâm sure about someone and sure that I donât need or want them in my life, but with himâI have doubts with my snap judgment.â
 âOh no, snap judgments are never a good thing, Aliya.â
 You groaned hearing the disappointment in her voice. âI know, jeez do I know.â
 âWhat do you feel like doing?â
 You scoffed, if you knew that you wouldnât be going through this struggle.
 âIâll be to you in a few days. Iâll see you soon.â
 âYour heart, Aliya, not your head,â she cautioned before you ended the call.
 For the next thirty or so minutes, you paced the balcony of your room as you debated with yourself over what you were going to do. After psyching yourself up as much as you could, you bit the bullet dialing Henryâs number before you talked yourself out of it. After one ring, you almost hung up but forced yourself to stick through the terror running through you. Two rings passed, then three. At the fourth you began to lower your hand to end the call and then his voice echoed through the speaker.
 âHello?â
 You froze drawing a blank and forgetting for a moment you had a voice.
 âHello?â
 âHello,â you whispered.
 The rustling on his end was loud but brief.
 âAliya?â
 Swallowing the lump, you took a deep breath. âYeah. Hi.â
 âItâs after one in the morning. Is everything all right? Are you hurt?â
 Your heart lurched, and a soft smile spread across your lips. âYeah, Iâm okay. Iâm not hurt,â you assured.
 He sighed, then yawned.
 âI uhâI know itâs late or early. I know you, um, probably have something better to do than be up. Iâm sorry if I woke you,â you half rushed and stuttered out.
 âYouâre rambling, Aliya.â You stopped your pacing then and slapped your forehead.
 âYes, I am. I do that when Iâm nervous,â you blurted.
 âWhy are you nervous?â
 Pausing, you gripped the rail on the balcony and used it to center yourself and get your nerves under control.
 âWell, Iâm about to ask the man I told I wouldnât be with to meet me somewhere at nearly two in the morning. Iâmâsending major mixed signals.â
 Henry didnât speak right away. Instead, he waited, making you chew your bottom lip as your anxiety increased.
 âWhy?â
 âWhâwhy? Why what?â
 âWhy should I?â
 Stunned, your jaw dropped. âOh, wow, out with the hard questions. Okay. Umâwellâyou should meet me because uhâitâs not often that I realize I was wrong or did something wrong and when I realize that, I like to say so.â
 Again the silence over the phone stretched for long moments. After a full minute of it, your anxiety peaked.
 âStill there?â
 Henry sighed. âIâm here. Iâm thinking.â
 His voice sounded so deliciously deep. Either you had woken him, and this was his sleepy voice, or he was purposely giving you that sexy baritone.
 âBy all means. Think as long as you need to. UmâIâll be at the eye until 2:30. I umâI hope you show. If you donât, I understand, really I do and no hard feelings.â
 Quickly you ended the call and panted as if youâd been running a marathon all in an effort to calm yourself down. It had been years since youâd put yourself through something like that, and you had a feeling it was only the beginning of you making amends.
Being Aliya Taylor afforded you some perks, and one was being able to have access to the eye well after closing. All it took was one call, well two to be exact, and voila, you were sitting in one of the cars anxiously waiting for Henry. You had no idea if heâd show, and the more and more time that passed with him not magically appearing, the more and more your brain worked overtime. The scenery helped a lot, but when you glanced at your watch and saw that it was almost 2:30, the scenery could do no more. Your nerves and anxiety had erupted like a volcano.
 âYou shouldnât be out here alone.â
 Spinning, you saw Henry at the door still on the platform. You released a relieved sigh, realizing he hadnât stood you up.
 âGood thing Iâm notâanymore.â
 Henry stepped into the car and took a few steps to you but stopped when he was still a ways away.
 âLondon after two is not safe,â Henry informed.
 âI know.â
 The doors closed, and the contraption began moving.
 âHow in the world did you get them to open this for you?â
 Smiling, you shrugged. âI may know people in high places,â you replied, which made him smile.
âThis is one of my favorite places in London,â you announced as you walked around the car, taking care not to get too close. You didnât know if you could handle it right away, and you had to feel him out to see what his coming really meant.
 âWhy?â
 âYou can see all of greater London from here and out to the countryside if you really look once youâre up high.â
 Henry also walked around the car, mirroring your intentions. Neither of you came close enough to touch one another.
 âHow often do you come to London?â
 âA lot. I have some family here, plus I prefer the countryside.â
 âSo you have some British blood,â Henry inquired, half a question, half a statement.
 âI had to. Only the Bris would dare think to send their daughters off to finishing school,â you quipped.
 Henryâs laugh filled the car, making you smile widely. He walked to one of the many windows turning his back to you. Slowly you looked over his broad back, taking in every detail. Your fingers could still remember what the dance of his muscles felt like underneath them, and they itched to feel them dance again. Taking a deep breath, you fiddled your fingers.
 âUh--I hope I didnât interrupt anything important by asking you here. Like I hope I didnât impose onâanyone.â
 You were fishing, it was obvious, and you felt no shame.
 âEh, who needs sleep anyway. I can sleep when Iâm dead,â Henry replied with a shrug of those magnificent shoulders still keeping his back to you.
 âWere um--were you uhâsleepingâalone?â
 Your heart was pounding so loudly you could swear he could hear it. He didnât speak or turn around. He just stood there torturing you. You wondered if he knew it was sheer torture what he was doing. Did he even care? The longer he remained quiet, the more you freaked out until you decided to backtrack all the way back.
âIâm sorry. Donât answer that. It is absolutely none of my business. I donât even know why I asked that,â you rushed out, rubbing your forehead from embarrassment before beginning to pace the car.
 That was when Henry chose to turn around.
 âI know a woman doesnât say something she doesnât mean, and usually when a woman asks a question, she wants to know the answer either to prove herself right or in hopes sheâs wrong. What is it for you?â
 His voice made you stop in the midst of pacing to watch his mouth as he spoke. There was something poetic about how he spoke, and it always distracted you. Nibbling your bottom lip, you thought about how to respond. You were already tired of the verbal Olympics and talking around each other.
 Sighing, you rolled your eyes. âHenry--.â
 âYou know thatâs the first time youâve said my name without the word goodbye in front of it.â
 That made you snap your mouth shut. Had it?
 âThatâs not true,â you protested.
 âIt actually is. I was beginning to think you like saying goodbye rather than hello.â
 You took a step to him. âThatâs not true. I like saying hello way more than goodbye,â you defended.
 The neutral look on his face gave you no confidence to go on, so you rolled your eyes and continued to walk around the car. This would be harder than you expected, you thought.
 âI was sleeping alone. Iâve slept alone for quite some time now,â he informed just as you were looking out of the window to the city.
 âLook, Henry, I-,â you began again, but then henry cut you off.
 âThat day in New York those weeks ago, I should have plain and simply laid it out for you. I should have told you everything. I was with Francesca--.â
 âDonât, donât, donât. I honestly donât want to know.â
 âBut you need to know. There is no way you can begin to trust me or begin to let yourself gravitate to me the way youâre entire being wants until you know,â Henry slid out. Pressing your palm to your abdomen, you tried to slow the butterflies that began flitting.
 âI was with Francesca for about two years. The whole time I knew she wanted a family in life. She was always vocal about her wanting to get married young and have kids. I knew, but I never paid attention to it. I was away filming something for a while, and when I came home one weekend, I caught her with someone else.â
 Your eyes widened, hearing his words.
 âturns out she was beginning a relationship with someone else, someone who she thought would lead to marriage and kids,â Henry added. His voice held steady, but you could imagine the pain going through those memories again.
 âIâm sorry.â
 Henry shook his head, âItâs not necessary. After a few months of her trying to make amends, I thought weâd try again.â He scoffed then rubbed the back of his neck. âIâm a hopeless romantic. After months of trying, I knew it wouldnât work, but I kept a relationship of sorts with her.â
 You understood. They were bed buddies.
 âI then met Abby, and what started as a fling developed into something more. Long story short, I got wind of a rumor she was using me for fame and money, so I distanced myself from her. after some time of her telling I had it all wrong, I decided it was easier keeping her around though my heart wasnât in it. I wasnât juggling them. I hadnât slept with either of them in a long time. I justâI felt it was better to have someone who misses me and wants me than living the lonely actor life.â
 His honesty had you frozen. When he began to explain, you hadnât expected him to reveal so much. You expected a bare minimum explanation, but what youâd gotten revealed so much more about him. You felt bad.
 âI guess allowing the attentions and affections to remain is just as bad as juggling them. I was playing with their hearts. Iâm not proud of it.â
 Henry dipped his head, showing he felt some shame for his actions.
 âWhen I met you, I realized although I had these two women sort of vying for me, I was still lonely, but those moments we were together, I didnât feel alone. I felt--,â he paused as if trying to find the right word. His hesitation made you look down.
 You knew what youâd felt.
 âWhen I met you, I felt someone Iâd never felt before, something I donât fully understand. I donât know what that means, but I know I want to find outâwith you.â
 Finally, able to release the breath you held, you took another, then cleared your throat. âIâm not juggling two guys. I was dating two guys, but not sleeping with both. I was with Liam first, and we had an okay relationship. We were busy, never saw each other and when we did it wasnât for long. He umâhe got annoyed and broke up with me. He said I was impacting his work, and he needed to focus.â
 You remembered how heâd said it too. Heâd said it like you were the one to blame for the roles heâd gotten or hadnât gotten.
 âI was fine with it, and during those five months apart, I met Jesse. We worked together and had fun and began dating. It wasn't anything sexual. Then Liam comes back and wants to pick up where we left off. I told him about Jesse, and he was fine with it.â
 The shock on Henryâs face almost made you laugh. Alicia and Amaya were also surprised theyâd chosen that unconventional path. Amaya, of course, thought you should have kept it secret from both of them.
 âOne day, Jesse sees Liam and me out, and it pissed him off enough to end things. Three weeks later, I lay it out for both that I donât want to choose, and I donât want anything serious. They were both fine with it, and so it went on. Six months later, I decided I needed to be on my own to focus on work and me. They didnât like the decision. They call and text me to try toârekindle something.â
 Henry scoffed, and you watched a soft smile tickle his lips.
 âI havenât physically seen either of them in weeks, now maybe months,â you finished.
 Henry was quiet for a few seconds before he snorted.
 âThey were mad.â
 âAngry?â
 âNo, mad, bonkers,â Henry clarified.
 âOh, crazy.â
 âYeah. To be okay to share you, be willing to do something like that. I couldnât do that,â Henry informed, making you smile in the process.
 âWell, men do crazy things.â
 âI can attest to that, but Iâd never do something that crazy. I canât share whatâs mine. I wonât.â
 Your eyes locked, and your body swayed toward his. It was like he was metal and you a magnet. Everything in you wanted to be close to him. The more you tried to fight the pull, the harder it became to breathe. The harder it was to breathe, the dizzier you became.
 âIâIâIâI,â you began before gulping the knot in your throat down that was making you speak in a raspy whisper. âI donâtâknow what this is.â
 Henry nodded.
 âI am not used to not knowing and being out of control,â you continued.
 âYou feel less controlled too?â
 You couldn't help but to nod. Once you did, Henry took a step to you. You took a step back.
 âHold on. I like control. I like control a lot. Anything that threatens that control is not for me.â
 Henryâs eyes lowered but only for a moment before he was looking right back into yours.
 âButâI really want to find out why you make me less controlled,â you finally admitted.
 The uncertainty on his face spoke volumes.  âWhat does that mean? Where does that leave thisâus?â
 You chewed your bottom lip; you realized how ill-prepared youâd been.
 âHonestly, I didnât think this meeting out that far. I only planned up to when you showed up. Iâve umâIâve been winging it this whole time.â
 His smile started small but spread wide in seconds; then, he laughed loudly.
 âSo you wonât mind me making a plan?â
 Oh lord, you thought, feeling his alpha pop out. You bit your bottom lip again.
 âWhat kind of plan?â
 Henry closed the remaining space between you. Every step he took had you shaking even more.
 âA plan that Iâve envisioned every night since brunch.â
Stopped in front of you and held you captivated by his gaze and the sheer dominating energy rolling off of him. The way he stood there taller than you made your mouth run dry.
 âJesus, youâre freakishly short,â Henry teased in his perfect Englishman voice.
 Smiling, you shook your head. âI know, I debated wearing heels but didnâtâI wanted you to see me normal for someone reason I donât under--.â
 Henryâs sudden movement cut you off. He dipped down the entire foot he overshadowed you and lifted you into the air to hold you flush against his body. Then he lowered his lips to yours, taking and keeping control of an intensely passionate kiss. A kiss you hadnât known you craved until it began, a kiss you were not prepared for. You moaned against his lips, and that moan triggered his. Wrapping your arm around his neck, you clung to him, and every sensation you were feeling and even new ones he was awakening within you.
 Slowly, Henry pulled his lips from your, but he kept your body to his. You kept your eyes closed, relishing the lingering effects.
 âYouâre shaking,â Henry whispered.
 âSo are you.â
 You opened your eyes and gazed into his as he slowly lowered you back to your feet.
 âWhat else is part of your plan?â
 Henry's smile spread across his face. âFor me to carry out any other part of my plan would be completely rakish of  me.â
 His smile was adorable, but still intimidatingly sexy.
 âI take it youâre not a rake.â
 âNot in the least.â
 âAll right. So, alternate plan?â
 He smiled again. âStill pretty rakish.â
 With that, he brought his lips back to yours, but this time he didnât pull back for several long minutes.
 Though you knew people in high places, it didnât mean you could keep the eye open all morning. After three trips around, the two of you got off then walked around London holding hands and eating ice cream. It was such a weird sensation allowing someone to hold your hand. It had been a long time since youâd ever wanted to. The entire time you laughed and talked about everything and nothing at the same time. One thing was clear; neither of you was in any rush for your time together to end.
 But end, it had to. When Henry walked you back to your hotel, it was almost time for the sun to come up.
 âHome safe and sound,â Henry joked.
 âYes, thanks to Superman.â
 âNo, no, Iâm just the man. Henry Cavill.â
 He held his hand out to you. Smiling, you rolled your eyes.
 âNow is when we get to this?â
 His goofy smile and shrug had your head skip a beat.
 âAliya Taylor,â you said, shaking his hand.
 âNice to meet you. Mind if I call you Aliya or Liya, that's all a mouthful,â Henry teased.
 Your laugh was loud, and you had to clamp your hand over your mouth, remembering what time it was.
 âYes, you can call me either. Can I call you Henners or Hank?â
 âNo. My friends call me that.â
 âSo, Iâm not your friend?â
 âIf I have anything to say about it, which I do, then no. I donât want you as a friend.â Henry replied, making you smile like a little girl at Christmas.
 âThen what do you want me as?â
 Your eyes lingered for a few seconds before Henry was pulling you closer to brush the back of his hand against your cheek.
 âFor now, Iâll settle for my girlfriend.â
 The man was an expert at charm. You bit into your bottom lip and tried to stop smiling. âGirlfriend, wow. Thatâs a loaded title. What does it entail?â
 âWell, for one, it entails being your true self with me, accepting my true self, being there for me when I need you, letting me be there for you when you need me or when I need you, allowing me to be your strength when youâre weak, your hope when youâre hopeless. Allowing me to grow with you, learn with you. Giving me your time and attention, enough of it so what we have can grow. Trusting me and letting me spoil you rotten.â
 If he werenât holding you against him, you would have fallen back.
 âIs that all?â
 Henry leaned closer kisses your cheek. âTo begin.â
 âAnd if I refused to be this girlfriend you speak of?â
 âThen Iâd just have to convince you,â Henry cooed.
 âHow?â
 Right on que, Henry dipped his lips to yours. The second they touched, you moaned and held him close. Why resist when you could enjoy it, you thought. His tongue swirled with yours before he nibbled then sucked your bottom lip. When he pulled back, your eyes remained closed.
 âIâm convinced.â
 Henry pecked your lips once, then twice. âGood. Girlfriend.â
 Your eyes locked again, and you forgot all common sense for what felt like an eternity.
 âEh-emâI have to be on a set in the morning.â
 âWhich is now,â Henry filled in.
 Still hazed in the brain, you stuttered and smiled like a fool.
 âMm, did I stay out all night?â
 âYou did. I hope it was worth it.â
 Smiling, you kissed his jaw. âWeâll see,â you whispered as you backed away from him, making your way to the door.
 âGood morning, Henry.â
 He smiled again, watching you disappear inside the hotel. As you walked to the elevator bank, you couldnât stop smiling or stop the butterflies that had been flying all night in your stomach. As you stepped onto the elevator and watched the doors closed, you recognized the feeling you felt as happiness. It had been absent for a long time.
How 9/11 Became Fan Fiction Canon
Every fictional character you can think of has experienced 9/11 in fanfiction.
A Clone Wars veteran with two lightsabers is on United Airlines Flight 93 and prevents it from crashing. Ron and Hermione get caught up in the chaos as the towers fall. Buffy the Vampire Slayer and her friends watch the attacks unfold on TV from Sunnydale. We have spent 20 years trying to process what happened on 9/11 and its fallout, and that messy process can be tracked through the countless, sad, disturbing, and sometimes very funny fanfiction left across the internet.
Many of the fanfics written in the weeks and months following the 9/11 attacks seemed to directly respond to the news as it happened, processing the tragedy in real-time through the eyes of characters they loved. In the absence of a canon episode where Daria Morgendorffer paid respects to those lost, writing fanfic about these characters also experiencing trauma helped fans cope.
One YuGiOh fanfic published on fanfiction.net in May 2002 could have been ripped exactly from what this writer experienced that Tuesday morning. âIt started as a normal day,â user Gijinka Renamon wrote. Yugi and his friends were in school, where their teacher informed them of the attacks and sent everyone home from school.
âAfter reading peopleâs 9/11 fics, I decided to write my own, and put a certain character in it. And Yugi and his pals were my first choice,â the author's note reads, explaining the connection they felt to United flight 93 and the World Trade Center attacks. Given that they lived in Pennsylvania, and âitâs close to New York, I felt really sad about it.â
Stitch, a fandom journalist for Teen Vogue, told Motherboard that this reaction to 9/11 is not at all uncommon in fandom.
"Fandom has always been a place that positions nothing as 'off limits,'" she said. "Historical tragedies like the Titanic sinking and atrocities like⌠all of World War 2 show up regularly across the past 30 years of people creating stories and art about the characters they love. So, on some level, it makes sense that 9/11 and the following 20-year military installation in the Middle East has joined the ranks of things people in different fandoms turn into settings for their fan fiction."
Reactions depicted in a handful of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fanfics published in the weeks after the attacks ring a little truer to the characters. âTuesday, 11th September 2001,â written by Anna K, almost echoes the lyrics from âIâve Got a Theory,â one of the songs in the musical episode that aired in November 2001. âWe have seen the apocalypse. We have prevented it. Actually, weâve prevented quite a few. So we know what they look like,â they write, before taking a darker turn. âThey look a lot likeâŚNew York today.â
Killing demons and vampires doesnât phase the Scooby Gang, but when preventable human death is brought into the picture, itâs gut wrenching.
âWhat am I supposed to doâŚWhen I canât do anything to save the world?â Buffy cries into Spikeâs chest, watching the attacks unfold on TV in a fanfic the author described as being âabout feeling numb and helpless.â
In âBlood Drive,â Kirayoshi writes about Buffy and her friends saving a van full of donated blood meant for victims of the attacks from a group of thirsty vampires. One Buffy the Vampire Slayer fic even takes a blindly patriotic turn, where noted lesbian witch Tara McClay helps Xander hang an American flag from the window of the magic shop to make Anya feel better.
Experiencing 9/11 as a young teenager was overwhelming not just because of the loss of life. Almost immediately after the event itself, it was as if the entirety of American culture re-oriented itself towards an overtly jingoistic stance. As we get distance from the attacks, seeing the tone of television and movies from the early 2000s is jarring, and some have gone viral on Twitter. In the world of pop music, mainstream musicians like the Chicks, formerly known as the Dixie Chicks, were blacklisted from the radio while Toby Keith sang about putting a boot up the ass of terrorists. On the Disney Channel, a young Shia Labeouf reading a poem he supposedly wrote about the events. The poem concludes with the line, "it's awesome to be an American citizen."
In a world so completely saturated with this messaging, it is not surprising that fanfic authors started including 9/11 in their work so soon after the event. Even The West Wing had a strange, out of continuity, fanfic-esque episode where the characters reacted to 9/11. In some cases, it made sense that the characters in the stories would be close to or a part of the events themselves.
"For characters like John Watson or Captain America, the idea works to an extent," Stitch told Motherboard. "In the original Sherlock Holmes works and the 2011 BBC series, Watson had just returned from Afghanistan. For Captain America and other Marvel heroes, 9/11 was something that was addressed in-universe in The Amazing Spider-Man volume 2 #36. Technically, 9/11 is 'canon' to the Marvel universe."
In âEarly Warning: Terrorism,â a fanfiction for the TV show Early Edition in which a man who mysteriously receives tomorrow's newspaper, predicting the future, avoids jingoism, but tries to precent 9/11 from happening. This fanfic remains unfinished; itâs unclear if the characters successfully prevent 9/11 in this retelling.
Largely in fanfic from the era just after 9/11, when many young authors were trying to emotionally grapple with it, the characters don't re-write or undo the events themselves. It's this emphasis on the reaction to tragedy that colors the fanfiction that features 9/11 going forward.
Although fanfiction authors have been writing about 9/11 consistently since soon after the event, whenever that fanfiction reaches outside of its intended audience, it looks bizarre.
A screenshot of a Naruto 9/11 fanfic on the Tumblr subreddit comes without any context, or even more than two lines and an author's note. Itâs impossible to suss out if this falls into the category of sincere fanfic without the rest of the piece or a publication date, but modern-day commenters on the Reddit thread see it as classic Tumblr trash.
Screenshot from r/Tumblr
âBin Laden/Dick Cheney, enemies to lovers, 10k words, slow burn,â one user joked in the replies, underscoring the weirdness of Naruto being in the Twin Towers by comparing it to a What If story about Cheney and Bin Laden slowly falling deeply in love.
Itâs hard to tell how much of the 9/11 fanfic and fanart starting a few years after the attacks is sincere, and how much of it is ironic, and trying to make fun of the very concept of writing fanfiction about 9/11.
A 2007 anime music video (in which various clips, usually from anime, are cut together to music) that combines scenes from The Lion King with Linkin Parkâs âCrawlingâ and clips from George Bushâs speeches immediately after the attacks feels like the perfect example of this. Even the commenters canât seem to suss out if this person is a troll or not.
Thereâs no way that My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic 9/11 fanart could be serious, right? Especially if the description pays tribute to âsome of the nation's most memorable buildings,â and features five of the main characters as child versions of themselves. The comments again are split between users thanking the artist for a thoughtful remembrance post, and people making their own headcanon for why Twilight Sparkle is surreptitiously absent from the scene.
Thereâs Phineas and Ferb fanfic that combines a 9/11 tribute concert with flashbacks to Ferb being rescued from the towers as a baby, written on the 10th anniversary of the attacks. It jumps from introspection to lines like, ââQuiet Perry the Platypus. Iâm trying to listen to these kids singing a 9/11 tribute.ââ
The author's notes make it more likely that they meant for this to be a tribute piece, but it doesnât quite make sense until watching a YouTube dramatic reading of it from 2020, fully embracing the absurdity of it all.
âFor me, 9/11 is synonymous with war. It completely changed the course of my life," Dreadnought, the author of a Captain America fanfic Baghdad Waltz that sees Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes fall in love over the course of the war on terror, told Motherboard. "Itâs the reason I joined the military, and I developed deep connections with people who would go on to deploy to Afghanistan and Iraq. These very much felt like my generationâs wars, perhaps because people I graduated high school with were the youngest folks eligible to serve at the time.â
Dreadnought told Motherboard that although they didn't deploy, their career has kept 9/11 and the trauma from it in their mind. After seeing that people who fantasize about Steve and Bucky getting together seemed particularly interested in reading fanfiction that related to 9/11, they decided to try their hand at it.
"I had to do something with all of that emotionally, and Iâm admittedly a bit emotionally avoidant. So I learned through fic that itâs easier for me to process those feelings and the knowledge of all the awful stuff that can happen in war if I can turn it into something creative," Dreadnought said. "Give the feelings to fake people and then have those fake people give the feelings to readers!"
To Dreadnought, who is a queer man, the experience of researching and writing this was more cathartic than they first expected, especially as a way to navigate feelings about masculinity, military culture, and queer identity. But they said the research they did, which included watching footage of first responders at ground zero, was what helped them finally process the event itself.
"It was like a delayed horror, and it was more powerful than I expected it would be." Dreadnought said. "When I was eighteen, I was pretty emotionally divorced from 9/11; I just knew I wanted to do something about it. So coming back to it in my 30s while writing this fic, it was a very different experience. Even the research for this story ended up being an extraordinarily valuable exercise in cognitively and emotionally processing 9/11 and all of its second and third order effects."
Fanfiction that features 9/11 provides an outlet for people who still grapple with the trauma from that day. But Stitch warns that the dynamics of fandom and how it relates to politics can also create fiction that's less respectful and more grotesque.
"With years of distance between the stories written and the original events of 9/11, there seems to be some sort of cushion for fans who choose to use those events as a catalyst for relationshipsâand Iraq and Afghanistan for settings," Stitch said. "The cushion allows them room to fictionalize real world events that changed the shape of the world as we know it, but it also insulates them from having to think about what they may be putting into the world."
The tendency of turning these events into settings or backgrounds for mostly white, male characters to fall in love has the unintended effect of displacing the effects that the war on terror has had on the world over. Steve and Bucky might fall in love during the war on terror, but they would also be acting as a part of the American military in a war that has been criticized since it started. Fanfic writers in other fandoms have come under fire for using real world tragedy as settings for fic before. In the aftermath of the 2010 Haiti earthquake Supernatural fanfiction about the actors Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki going to the island to do aid became controversial within the fandom. There have also been fics where characters grapple with the death of George Floyd that is written in a way that displaces the event from the broader cultural context of race in America.
"A Captain America story where Steve Rogers is a 'regular' man who joins the US Army and 'fights for our freedom' post-9/11 is unlikely to deal with the warâs effect on locals who are subject to US military intervention," Stitch said. "Itâs unlikely to sit with what Captain America has always meant and what a writer is doing by dropping Steve Rogers into a then-ongoing conflict in any capacity."
After enough time, ânever forgetâ can even morph into âbut what if it never happened?â A 19k+ word Star Wars alternate universe fanfic asks this question, wondering what would have unfolded if someone with two lightsabers was on United Flight 93. This fic, part of a larger fanfic series with its own Wikia, considers what would have happened if Earth was a military front in the Clone Wars.
In this version of events, a decorated general who served in the Clone Wars is able to take back control of Flight 93 before it crashes, landing safely and preventing even more tragedy from happening that day. In the end, all of the passengers who made harrowing last calls to their loved ones before perishing in a Pennsylvania field survive thanks to the power of the Force, and are awarded medals of honor by President Bush.
Twenty years after the attacks, itâs painful to think about what would have happened if people got to work 15 minutes later, or missed their trains that morning. There werenât Jedi masters deployed to save people in real life, but for some of the fanfic writers working today, the world of Star Wars might feel just as removed as the world before September 11, 2001.
Fiction serves as a powerful playground for processing cultural events, especially generational trauma. The act isn't neutral though; a decade's worth of fanfiction that takes place on or around 9/11 shows how our own understanding of a traumatic event can shift with time.
Time and Chance
Characters: Albedo, Childe, Diluc, gn!reader
Word Count: 4,028
Warnings: Swearing
Premise: Confessions are tricky things. Sometimes it takes week, maybe months, maybe years of building up courage for one to happen. And sometimes life throws the oddest wrenches in our paths.
In which the reader confesses.
Authorâs Note: I may or may not have decided to go full sappy this week, but I didnât want to overwhelm you guys with my overbearing angst. Also I thought it was cute. Originally I wasnât sure if I wanted the reader to be the one doing the confessing or whether it should be the character. I decided upon the reader on a whim essentially, with the idea that I could do the character later. Weâll see! The title today is reference to one of my favorite novels, written by Sharon Kay Penman. If anyone likes historical fiction Iâd highly recommend it.
Todayâs characters are Albedo, Childe, and Diluc. Tomorrow will be Kaeya, Xiao, and Zhongli. And maybe Keqing.
Like I said in my past post Happy Valentineâs Day! Although this time itâs Valentineâs Day proper.
Albedo
In your defense, who wouldnât fall in love with Albedo?
The mysterious alchemist of Monstadt; sharp as a tack, insatiably curious, and blessed with an ethereal sort of beauty on top of it. Who wouldnât fall in love with such a person?
And that was the problem. Youâd sort of taken it for granted that everyone loved Albedo, and in that assumption youâd found a particularly distasteful discovery. That if everyone loved Albedo then you were hardly going to be the only one asking after his time. And, following that line of thought, you figured itâd be incredibly rude â not to mention supremely irritating for Albedo â for you to confess your feelings.
And it wasnât as if you two were the closest in the world. Although you wouldnât say you were total strangers either. You instead drifted in that odd in between; more than acquaintances, not quite friends. Or at least thatâs how you interpreted it. Albedo didnât seem to be the person with inclinations towards friendship in general, a not altogether untrue or wild assumption, so you remained content where you were, happy with the conversations you had, with the times heâd trust you with a piece of equipment or would explain to you in detail what he was working on. I mean, surely that was enough?
Absolutely not. Even in your state of perpetual irritation and fretting over your feelings, you knew that simply ignoring them was a ridiculous solution. When did that ever go well? Miscommunication was the relationship killer, no matter what type, and what could be more of a misunderstanding than this? You didnât even know what he thought of you for Sevenâs sake!
So youâd resolved yourself to telling him. Even if heâd be irritated surely heâd appreciate your honesty. And even if he didnât you needed to tell him, for yourself if not for him.
It was with this in mind that you approached him one afternoon as he was working outside.
âUm, Albedo?â Your voice had taken on a slightly weak tone, as if you didnât have enough air all of a sudden. It sounded weird, and you kind of wished you didnât have to hear it. But that was par for the course when dealing something like this, although it didnât make it any easier.
âOh, sorry I didnât notice you there.â Albedo turned around to look at you. You noticed that heâd swapped his regular tools for a paint set and an easel. Glancing at the painting you were struck by how heâd somehow managed to depict Cider Lake so accurately with so few brushstrokes. Never did you think about how the slight ripples that appeared in it could look a bit like circles. It was altogether impressive, and for a moment you forgot what you were doing, or perhaps youâd pushed it out of your mind.
âWas there something you wanted to ask?â Albedoâs voice pulled you out of your artistic musings. Evidently you werenât going to be able to get out of it now. Come hell or high water, you were going to tell him.
âWell, so⌠you see, I⌠I really love you and your work!â The words came tumbling out, dropping like stones in the suddenly charged atmosphere. Almost immediately your nerves were replaced with a distinct sinking sense. âUhm, rather. I mean ââ you tried to begin again, but your voice had suddenly turned quite small, and you found yourself unable to continue.
âIâm glad to hear it.â Albedoâs voice was calm but not unkind, for a moment you felt your face grow warm. Was this actually going to happen? Itâd be impressive considering how youâd botched it. âIâm so glad to hear thereâs someone else interested in my work. I find that unfortunately a great many people take the world around them for granted. That you do not is commendable.â
You found you werenât really sure what to say; admittedly the only thing going through your mind at the time was something along the lines of Holy shit. Holy shit I fucking blew it.
Okay, so maybe that was an absolute train wreck. Still, youâd gotten that far, and at this point you felt like itâd be harder to stop and deal with the memory of your botched pseudo-confession than to try again. So you steeled your courage and after a week or so you found yourself ready.
This time you tried for as he arrived at work. Originally you were going to wait for afterwards, but you found the anticipation was tearing you apart, and so decided for before. The anticipation, combined with your slight exhaustion, was nearly unbearable; and a not so small part of you kept telling yourself that this was a terrible idea, but you were too far gone.
âFancy meeting you here at this time.â There was certainly surprise in Albedoâs voice, but he was smiling, and didnât seem to mind at all when you stammered out that you wanted to ask him about something. He simply nodded, before unlocking his lab and gesturing for you to go in first.
You loved Albedoâs lab. Various pieces of equipment gleamed in the early morning light, everything properly labeled and put away; a stark contrast to the clutter of Albedoâs desk, filled with papers and the odd sample. The whole room was surprisingly nice in general, floors made of wood, painted over with a type of resin as to keep it from being properly damaged, multiple windows keeping the space surprisingly airy, and the smell of various herbs filling the air, though not so much as to be overpowering. Youâd once mentioned to Albedo that the space seemed much to homey to be a proper lab. Heâd merely laughed, replying that all homes should be comfortable, no matter how out of the ordinary.
Now you used said comfort and familiarity to ground yourself. This time youâd do it. This time for sure.
âSo, um about my question?â
âYes?â Albedo replied, dropping a few things on his desk. You took a breath, steadying yourself before pushing on ahead.
âWell⌠you know when I told you I liked you and your work?â
âOf course. I was very happy to hear it.â Albedoâs tone remained opaque, you had no idea how your words were registering.
âWell, you see, I wasnât being completely clear. What I meant was more⌠well⌠well I like you, more than your work.â Seeing the look of confusion on his face you sped up slightly. âNot that I donât like your work of course! Itâs just, itâs justâŚâ you were foundering again, feeling stupidly embarrassed. Becoming more and more frustrated with yourself you shook your head. âWhat I mean is I like you. Personally. And I like you a lot, more than just as acquaintances or as maybe friends. And I know that this is kind of out of the blue and kind of intrusive, and Iâm sure there are a lot of people who like you. But I just wanted to tell you because, well I donât know, just because.â
You took a deep breath, feeling as if youâd said altogether too many words. Glancing towards Albedo you saw a look of slight shock on his face. A feeling of dread was creeping up on you. Maybe it wouldâve been better to say nothing.
âWell, Iâm certainly flattered,â Albedo began, all your hopes beginning to sink. Urging yourself not to look away your nevertheless started picking at your fingernails, praying that at least the rejection would be over soon. âthough Iâm not really sure what you see in me. Iâm hardly the ideal sort of person. And there certainly donât seem to be many people who like me.â Albedo paused then; staring at him you found yourself in slight disbelief, sure that the sudden blush painting his cheeks was a figment of your imagination. âThat being said, I cannot say that I donât reciprocate your feelings. In truth I feel quite foolish now, only for assuming you were uninterested and refusing to try my hand at my own confession.â
âReally?â You didnât mean for the tone of your voice to come out as so utterly disbelieving, but you couldnât help yourself. Slightly light-headed you took a step forward, closing the space between you and the suddenly bashful alchemist in front of you. âYou like me too?â
âYes.â Albedo nodded slightly. âAnd, well, since you like me as well, might weâŚâ
âMight we?â
âMight you do me the honor of becoming my partner?â
You found yourself giggling hysterically, half from the sudden release of nerves half from how ludicrous the situation had turned out to be. Seeing Albedo, looking for the first time uncertain and nervous, you stopped. Your face burst into a smile and you nodded.
âThis is quite dramatic. But of course, of course I will.â
âIâm glad. But, might I say something?â
âYes?â
âI wish youâd told me after work. If only because Iâll never be able to concentrate now.â
 Childe
If you had to describe your crush on Childe in one word it would be: idiotic. If you had to describe it in a sentence itâd be; incredibly irritating but also impossible to ignore.
You liked Childe, you liked him a lot. And you couldnât blame yourself. Childe was the ideal sort of partner; charismatic, athletic, with eyes that could make your heart skip a beat and hair that was asking for you to run your hands through it. Childe was attentive too, full of words that would make anyone swoon a bit, and always ready to listen, agreeing with you on every point and reacting just as you wished.
But that was the problem. Childe was a façade, his personality had been honed to be as sharp and as deadly as a knife. Of course he was understanding and charismatic and a perfect person to hold a conversation with, what else could one expect of a member of the Fatui?
At first youâd desperately tried to ignore your feelings, as if they were somehow embarrassing. You felt vaguely guilty for carrying a flame for Childe, as if youâd managed to fall into a trap youâd seen a ways away. It was an unpleasant feeling to be sure, and you tried to bury it as much as possible, sure itâd go away.
But it didnât go away, instead your feelings somehow seemed to become more and more stubborn, as if insisting on leading you down the path that many fools who interacted with the Fatui had fallen down before. Childe was at the forefront of your mind.
You noticed when he passed by you, shooting you a blinding smile which always turned into a self-confident sort of smirk, no doubt a result of your inevitable blush. You noticed the way he always seemed to ask after your interests, but never failed to avoid more personal topics that might make you uncomfortable. You noticed how he laughed at your odd half-jokes and the way that his hand brushed your once, causing you to withdraw your own as if burned, stammering out a ânothingâ when he asked what was wrong.
But still you refused to tell him. Surely that was what he wanted, another person who could be called upon to give information to the Fatui, or perhaps assist in their dirty work. That wouldnât be you, that would never be you.
It was snowing on your way home, blocking out the normal sounds and casting the world in an eerie sort of beauty. You wished that it wasnât so late, cursing yourself for once more forgetting how early the sun set. It didnât help that it was blindingly cold, and that you were dressed for weather that was at least ten degrees warmer. Hurrying along you were thinking about the meal that you were going to have, unaware of the slick patch of ice lying in front of you.
âWhoah, be careful!â You were yanked out of your thoughts with alarm. Glancing around you quickened your pace, shoes slipping immediately on the ice. However instead of a hard fall on the street you found a pair of arms wrapped under yours. Glancing up you found your face only centimeters away from Childeâs.
âSorry for causing that.â Childeâs voice was clear as a bell, marking the contrast between the two of you in your mind. Lifting you up he chuckled slightly. âI shouldâve realized that a random voice yelling at you would be alarming. Nothing bruised I hope?â
âN-no.â You managed, face burning. Youâd never gotten this close to Childe before, not really, and the experience was going straight to your head, as if youâd suddenly gotten very, very drunk. Shaking your head you shifted your glanced towards the ground. âThank you.â You managed, although your voice was soft enough to be inaudible. You were still trying to process what was happening. One question kept replaying itself in your mind, why had he called out, why had he noticed you?
âIâm glad!â Childeâs voice was a beautiful thing, and you found you couldnât really think when listening to it. âI was a bit worried I wasnât in time.â
âYeahâŚâ you replied. Suddenly the situation dawned on you completely, and you found yourself looking at him with no little suspicion. âWhy do you pay so much attention to me?â You blurted out.
âWhat do you mean?â The expression on Childeâs face was one of perfect confusion, but you could tell that heâd been somehow caught. The tone of his voice was suddenly muddied, as if you were hearing his uncertainty for the first time. This gave you courage to press forward.
âI mean it. Why, why do I always see you? I mean, why do you even pay attention to me? Iâm not the kind of person to forget who you are, the fact that youâre a member of the Fatui. I wonât be roped into your schemes, no matter how much I like you.â Shit. That last part was supposed to be only in your head. For a moment you werenât sure if you hadnât actually hit your head somehow.
Childe looked frozen, his expression blank, filled with disbelief as well as⌠bashfulness? If thatâs what it was it certainly didnât fit the normal vision of Childe, still you found yourself somehow compelled by it. This was a part of the real Childe.
âI⌠didnât realize youâd notice. Now I feel found out!â He chuckled again, but this time it was distinctly nervous, and he turned to the side slightly. Suddenly he paused, and his eyes snapped towards yours. âWait, rewind. You like me?â
ââŚYeah.â I mean what were you supposed to say?
âI canât believe this.â The widest grin spread across Childeâs face, and he started bouncing on his toes slightly, it was very cute you could give him that.
âYouâre ignoring the rest of my words. Personal feelings or not I still hate the Fatui, and I still donât know why youâd target me anyways.â
âItâs cause I like you, canât you tell?â Childeâs words rammed into you, utterly unexpected; seeing you shake your head he once more closed the space between you two. âNo, I mean it. I like you. I just canât believe that you like me back.â He let out another huff of laughter. âI canât believe Iâm this lucky, Iâve never been this lucky. Well, Iâm sorry that I came off like I was some Fatui creep, I promise my occupation doesnât include systematic wooing of civilians.â
âHow can I trust you?â You were trying to stand your ground, but in reality youâd already fallen. The situation was too much, and what little resistance youâd managed to hold on in the past weeks was tearing to shreds before your own eyes.
âBecause I wouldnât lie about this.â Childe was suddenly still, his expression deadly serious. âI promise I wouldnât lie about something like this. The fact is I like you, I like you a lot. I know my job is⌠unconventional to say the least; I also know that itâs entirely fair if you donât want to associate with me because of it. But at least trust in my feelings being real, okay?â
What could you do? You nodded, a short âI trust youâ falling from your lips. The feeling of happiness was surprisingly sedate, mixed with nerves, yet also somehow filled with contentment. It felt so good, it felt so good just to let go and accept what had happened. You liked Childe, you liked him so much, and he like you too. What more was there to say?
âMay I ask you something?â Childe asked, voice slightly husky. Your faces were once more barely apart, and you found that you could stay like this for ages and ages.
âYes?â
âMay I hold your hand?â
You let out a laugh, smiling brightly as you slid your hand into his.
 Diluc
You werenât even sure how this one happened.
It wasnât that Diluc wasnât the perfect kind of guy, I mean if he wasnât you probably wouldnât be falling madly into one sided love with him. It was just that you two didnât actually have much of a chance to interact with one another, what with him being the manager and part time bartender of a surprisingly vast winery, and with you being an adventurer and someone not likely to get plastered any time soon.
But the few times that you had interacted with him, usually something to do with guarding the alcohol he was exporting, had been enough to cement an intense infatuation in your mind. There was just something about him; whether it was his voice, his polite yet intense form of speech; his mannerisms, always perfectly on time with what he needed, something which helped you and the Guild immensely; or his general charm, okay look he had great hair; youâd simply gone mad for him.
And mad indeed you were. Though you werenât about to become a stalker â besides being incredibly creepy on principle since when did that land a person in anything but jail â youâd taken to trying to find out a least a little more about him. Because if you were going to be infatuated with someone it should at least be for more than his organizational skills and the fact his hair would look great in a high ponytail.
And what youâd found out only built upon your crush. The fact that he found the Knights of Favonius lacking, though perhaps a bit unconventional, was ultimately reasonable, or at least justifiable. You liked also that he refrained from drinking, and not just because the idea of ending the night sick in the bathroom was something that haunted you a bit. The more you learned the more you wished that you were in a situation where your feelings could be reciprocated, or at least where you could become friends of some degree. Really you just wanted him to notice your existence, sure he could pick you out in the endless sea of adventurers.
So you planned on introducing yourself at some point, at least as his almost designated wine protector. The only problem was when. Diluc seemed to be busier and busier these days, and when he was around he seemed muted, as if he was carrying something. You couldnât bring yourself to add to his burden your own baggage. So you said nothing, and as your crush grew so did your dejection.
It was a lovely summer evening and, seeing as your apartment had becoming stifling in the daytime, youâd taken a walk, snaking through the streets of Monstadt before exiting via the back gate, glad to see there were no guards around. Walking down towards the banks of the lake you slipped off your shoes and dipped your feet into the water. Letting out a sigh you sat down and tilted your head back, enjoying the slightly breeze on your face, trying to take your mind off of the past months of agony. The world faded into background noise, and you found yourself in a state of pseudo peace, glad to have it, if only for a moment.
âWatch out!â A familiar voice broke through your reverie. Turning your head towards the source of your disruption you saw a masked figure as well as a cryo abyss mage. The mage, having correctly decided you were going to be easier to deal with than the actively armed person, suddenly appeared right in front of you. Acting on instinct you pushed your hand in front of you, letting electricity bloom from your fingertips.
As the abyss mage lay stunned your felt an arm wrap around your waist, dragging you a ways away. âWait here.â The person carrying you said, before running back to fight. Finally getting a good look at your savior it was all you could do not to gasp. Despite being the cold hard truth you still found it hard to believe, and for a second you wondered if you hadnât passed out somewhere and were having a particularly fantastic dream.
Finally the fighting was over, lifting yourself up you jogged over to the man who could only be the Darknight Hero.
âMaster Diluc?â The words flew out of your mouth.
âJust Diluc please.â Diluc shook his head. âForgive me for being a bit rough. Cryo abyss mages and electro users rarely work well together.â
âItâs perfectly fine!â You replied eagerly. âReally, thank you!â
Diluc offered a smile in reply, one that immediately made your heart seize up. Suddenly you remembered who the person in front of you was. Seized at first with something akin to embarrassment you also came to a sudden realization. This might be the only chance.
âDiluc?â
âYes?â
âWell, can I say something?â
âOf course you may.â Diluc relaxed his stance, leaning slightly forward. Your face was burning, you really werenât expecting something like this to happen, but it was now or never.
âI realize this will be quite sudden, but I⌠I like you.â You felt the urge to add on something, some explanation or apology, but unfortunately, or perhaps thankfully, you found you couldnât say anything more. Running your fingers through your hair you lowered your head slightly, not wanting to see the expression on his face.
âCan I say something?â Dilucâs voice was gentle, and you couldnât help but look up at him. Though you wouldnât say his stance had changed very much, he somehow seemed more relaxed, something you werenât expecting.
âOf course! I realize what I said must really be a shock, Iâm really sorry.â You let out a pathetic sort of laugh.
âDonât be sorry. I realize what Iâm about to say must be equally as shocking. But, the fact of the matter is I like you as well.â
âI didnât realize you knew I existed!â You replied, still not ready to drop your defense mechanisms. Diluc stared at you, a perplexed expression on his face.
âIâm quite surprised by that, I thought that my request for you to be the guild member in charge of the Winery wouldâve been an indicator. Forgive me, I didnât realize that you were unaware.â
âI thought that was a decision by the Guild to make things easier.â You admitted. âAlthough I guess I just didnât want to admit that you might be aware of my existence.â
âWhy?â
âBecause that wouldâve been scary! I mean, what if you didnât like me, not in that way, just⌠in general.â
âWell I like you a lot.â Dilucâs voice was soft and warm.
âI like you two.â You replied, voice barely above a whisper.
As he escorted you back to your home the two of you spoke about a myriad of things, some important and some quite mundane. You found that having your feeling reciprocated had truly opened up something in you. Suddenly everything seemed so much realer, made manifest by Dilucâs presence. You couldnât believe it really. What had failed with months of planning had succeeded in a matter of moments.
And all because of an unsuspecting abyss mage.
