Just A Touch
Paring: Eli Palmer x Deputy Callahan (belongs to @minilev) Word count: 2100+ Warnings: injuries, minor angst, hurt/comfort, pining, fluff Note: Merry Christmas @minilev 💕🎄a gift for you for the Christmas exchange hosted by @natesofrellis 💕 I hope you like it, and I hope I caught your deputy just right! This was really a joy to write, and I’m grateful to have this opportunity! Happy holidays! 🎄
The spotty signal of the radio made it hard for the woman to hear the request, and when she asked for them to repeat, she finally understood the caller, “Dep! Deputy Callahan? Do you copy?”
“Go ahead,” she cleared her throat after taking a sip from her canteen. Next, Wheaty requested Callahan to check in on their mutual colleague.
He told her that Eli had taken off and hadn’t checked in for some time, “I know he can take care of himself, but it’s Christmas. So you know, for me? For the whitetails?” It was easy for Callahan to forget it was the holiday season rolling. People would rather be with loved ones and friends, yet they were fighting for their lives in the cold weather. And the snow was beginning to pillow the land.
After trekking out to the last location Wheaty gave her, it wasn’t too hard to narrow down Eli’s tracks. The snow was just beginning to pick up, not enough to wipe away Eli’s tracks but enough to keep the Peggies and Judges in their godforsaken holes.
She had been trekking in the mountains for some time, alone for once, to clear her mind with all that’s been going on. Her companions had meant to meet her but needed to resupply. So she was okay with this time alone.
The lack of Palmer alarmed her when she noticed a deep shade of red on the frosted ground and tracks. Multiple people. But a rustle behind the deputy caught her attention.
Too hard for the wind, and the wind doesn’t step on leaves; she’s quick to lift her weapon at the source. But a weak and stumbling Eli Palmer dropped his bow when he saw the deputy. Rushing to aid her bloodied friend and comrade.
“Dep,” the word was barely a mutter. Callahan ran to him to hold him before he could collapse.
She felt him wince and keep in a tiny groan when she had him. Her hand was wet with blood.
An exit wound through his shoulder. Likely an arrow from one of Jacob’s hunters.
Maybe the loss of blood, but he looked weary and exhaustsmile at just the sight of her when he peeked up through his unruly hair, ed. Almost in a daze, but the deputy swore she saw him “I’ve never been so happy to see you... Or a familiar face.”
“Damn, Eli! Are you okay?” The worry in her voice was noticeable when she pushed the hair from his face. Callahan ran her fingertips along his bearded cheeks. Even under the unkempt beard, they were cold and growing pale.
She didn’t notice when Eli sighed at the touch, almost following her hand.
“We need to get you back to the Wolf’s Den.”
Instead of her plan, Eli pointed her into the opposite of the Wolf’s Den; he explained in painful breaths, “It’s too far. McClellan's old cabin is up here.”
Hesitant, Callahan agreed as she held him as best as she could. Unfortunately, the cold and the wind slowed them down just a bit. The man was right about it being closer.
As the deputy helped him up the steps, she asked, “Eli, what happened out there?” “It’s..” Palmer grew silent when Callahan reached for the door of the old cabin, “Bad call.” He answered her once they entered the empty home.
It’s like any other home and cabin in Hope County. A hollow shell with littered papers and dust-covered furniture.
It was still cold but much warmer than outside. For now, her warm leather would keep her warm. She was more worried about her injured friend.
“I could say that with the cold coming in and you leaving the Wolf’s Den,” There was a slight hint of snark in her tone, but she tried to hide it when she let him go.
The woman had him sit at a nearby round dining table with only one chair, “What were you doing out here?”
Eli didn’t answer. His eyes avoided her own brown eyes; clearly, something was eating at him, but he only instructed her to scope out the cabin and find some medicine.
Instead of pressing her injured ally, Callahan checked the home out. The living and dining space were trashed; random papers were along the ground. Likely peggies looking for any legal papers.
With a slight nudge of her boot, she moved broken glass along the baseboards and out the way as she checked the back room and bathroom. The most simple bedroom with dark wood end tables and a matching dresser, and a made bed, untouched by the rough invaders that ravaged the rest of the home.
Maybe cultists weren’t savages after all.
The bathroom was just as neatly kept. It could be shocking to see it so cleaned even with all the dust and lack of tenants.
Callahan raided the medicine cabinet and sighed with relief when she found a proper solution for Eli’s wound. She felt even more relief when she found a roll of gauze, maybe just enough for her friend.
When she returned to the living space, Eli was tending to the fireplace, holding his still bleeding shoulder while blowing into the bottom of the grate.
“You know burning coals are just a bit hotter than burning wood?” A random fact as the Whitetail used a poker to shuffle the cold, old wood inside the fireplace. Like luck was on his side, the fire started slowly.
It gave them just enough light to their space, and Callahan called to him, “You want me to patch that shoulder up?”
He doesn’t look at her. Only at the fireplace as the flames grew with his care. Each of his movements was painful, but he didn’t turn back at the deputy, “Can you believe it’s Christmas?”
“Time flies when you’re surviving,” she motioned him to her. To the seat she left him at before as she prepared for whatever medical attention she could give him.
Eli was so hesitant, so shameful as he kept his face down. The long, dark locks covering his face.
“May I?” Callahan asked to remove his shirt. When he nodded to her and stood to make it easier, Callahan pulled the fabric up. Listening to a small wince of pain, she quickly apologized, “Are you sure you don’t want me to take you to the Wolf’s Den?”
“I trust you, Cal,” a free hand takes hers and pats it lightly, “Plus it’s gonna get too cold for me to get out there.”
Her eyes followed his and watched his hand for a moment. A tender and careful touch, but one that lasted a little too long.
It took Eli a moment before pulling away and nodding to the sweet deputy.
With his blessing and guidance, Deputy Callahan began to tend to his wound. Lightly dabbing away the dried blood. It made the Whitetail contain any sounds of pain. His breaths were controlled and deep as she attempted to suture the open wound. Eli even guided her, his hand on hers just for a moment when he did.
His hold was gentle, the soft drag of his thumb lightly on her knuckles made her chest twist a bit. It’s the lightest touch, tender and reassuring. It’s something she felt before.
The cabin had warmed up a bit when Callahan was finished wrapping the shoulder. She smiled to herself when Eli attempted to move his arm up.
Still, in pain, he praised her, “Not bad, you did good.”
Callahan noted the continued lack of eye contact again, and she pressed him a bit, “Eli, what’s wrong?” She heard a confused hum and asked again, “You never leave the Den, and it’s not like you to be careless. Is everything okay?”
When he didn't answer right away, Eli let out a deep sigh and rubbed his hands hard. He shook his head and his hair with him, “It’s Christmas. I.. thought about all the whitetails stuck with Jacob. Stuck at the Grand View.” She watched as his shoulders tensed, “I thought maybe with the cold, they would be lax in security. I just didn’t want our people to be left alone like that. Not on Christmas.”
Maybe he was feeling guilty. It wasn’t uncommon for resistance members to feel the weight of loss, the loss of their comrades and friends. It didn’t help that it was being dragged out for months and into holidays meant to be spent with loved ones.
“I’m sure I tripped the alarm and caused a lockdown. And worse.” He told her, “I… just wanted to bring some folks home.”
“Eli..” Callahan grabbed his hand carefully. Her scarred hand ran over his to comfort the shaken man, “You couldn’t have known what would happen.”
He went on but kept his face from hers, “No? I came home busted up and failed.” Callahan could hear him exhale a shaken and frustrated breath before he said, “How do you do it?” it confused her what he meant, and he asked how does she keep going when it felt like they were losing.
Callahan didn’t want to talk about herself; she had her own methods and drew strength from her own path. Instead, she asked him the same question, “How do you?” That caught Eli’s attention, his dark eyes peeked through his hair, and he shook his head. It coaxed her to go into more detail, “We’ve been at this for a while. We’re still here.” “I guess that’s true. We have people to fight for,” he answered. His free hand covered hers. Cradling her hands as they held his.
The touch was careful. Fragile even as the deputy inhaled deeply at his tenderness. Eli was hesitant when he lifted her hand to his forehead. She could feel his warm skin now, not at all as cold as before.
Callahan dropped to her knees before she took a hand from him and put it on his wounded shoulder as the deputy asked, “You’re gonna be okay, right?”
“I will be,” his voice was soft, still so gruff and optimistic.
It didn’t stop a slight flush build when Callahan ran her hand up his neck to his cheek, dragging a thumb along his cheekbone. It was rough with his facial hair, but it didn’t matter.
It didn’t matter. Not the terrible cold and the unavoidable danger in the county. The holiday didn’t even matter.
What was important was the company. The safety of her ally and friend.
A companion whose face Callahan held in her face. Cradling such an unruly man that was mistaken for a Peggie, but yet so much more.
Eli didn’t stop himself from leaning into Callahan's touch, not when he felt the deputy’s thumb caress his cheeks. Resting his hands on her shoulders, she let out a small sigh when he pressed his forehead to hers.
There was no objection when the deputy felt his nose against her, the slightest and softest touch. It was hesitant till she doesn’t pull from him. It was just them, and there he wouldn’t let her go. Now when the deputy was so close.
It’s then he finally peeked up. Finally, locking his dark, soulful eyes onto hers. They’re more enthralling than he wanted them to be. Too inciting, her lovely cheeks were warm to his touch.
Like the raging fireplace illuminating their room, Eli’s cheeks were burning, and he was thankful for this beard. But he doesn’t stop to put the faintest kiss on her thumb. So when he felt her shudder a bit when kissed her fingertip, everything in him pulled him to her.
He’d lost so much, and his inspiration brought him his strength. The fire in Cal’s eyes, he was it then when she said his name. A soft and hushed “Eli,” but it makes it sweeter when the young woman’s hands brushed his long hair from his flushed face. His own hands cup her beautiful face.
Her eyes wandered along his face, his eyes, and his lips. Then, watching as he took in deep, shuddering inhales with her touch before grazing his lips against hers and planting the softest kiss on her lips.
It was almost more painful than his shoulder when she held his hair tightly, but it only coaxed him to kiss her more deeply. More desperate when he feel Cal’s fingers in his hair, mewling softly into his kiss.
With a burning intoxication, Eli wrapped his arms around the deputy. Holding her tightly against him, groaning deeply when he felt her tongue along his.
Her enthralling gaze and touch took hold of the Whitetail, or Eli was just weak.
It didn’t matter. They’ll be okay. They had the company.

And maybe a kiss after treating a wound + Callahan x Mary May?
Calahan stumbled up the stairs of the Spread Eagle, hissing at the sharp pain carrying across his shoulder blades as he pushed open the door that led into Mary May's tiny apartment. Zorro was hot on his heels and climbed onto the couch while staring at his owner with what Hartley read as worry. "I'm fine, bud.", he whispered as he searched for the first aid kit as quietly as he could in hopes his rummaging wouldn't wake Mary May up. "Fucking finally." He took a seat at the kitchen table and opened the bag, looking for anything that would help him in patching himself up. "Asshole couldn't even face me, Zorro. Stab and run. Heroic, eh?", he muttered at the raccoon while trying to reach around himself so he could clean up the wound one of the Peggies had left him with before Calahan had sent him to the afterlife. Zorro kept his gaze trained at him, making him add, "Wanna help? Ya know, should have taught you to dress wounds, buddy. Would have come in handy now." The moment he said the words, the bedroom door behind him cracked open, followed by quick footsteps. "Jesus, Cal. What happened?", Mary May asked in a sleepy voice as she neared. "The usual, Angel."
Calahan groaned in frustration when he couldn't manage to reach all the way around and clean the damned wound. "Let me.", a hand appeared over his shoulder while the other came to rest on his back, "It looks kinda bad. Want me to radio someone?" "Nah. I'm fine. Nothing a beer wouldn't fix." "Calahan.", Mary May's tone carried a hint of warning as she began working on the deep gash, "You promised you would be more careful, then I wake up and find you bleedin' in my kitchen at 3 am…" "Sorry. You know me, it's inevitable.", he muttered and let out a curse at the sting of the antiseptic. "You have to get it checked out in the morning. Can't be walking around like this." "Fine. Fine, mom." Mary May pressed the bandage with extra force at his remark, "Ow. You're frankly failing at the whole playing doctor. Or are you going for a sadistic take?" She ignored his joke, announcing, "All done. Now promise me you're gonna go to the actual doc." "I promise." Mary May came around his chair then, arms wrapping around his neck as she stared down at him. "Come here.", Hartley said playfully and puckered his lips for good measure. "Can't be serious for one second. Remind me again why I even like you...", she shook her head but still lowered her mouth to his while his hands grasped her waist. "Bedroom?", he suggested in between kisses and rose up from his seat, pushing her backwards in the direction of the bedroom before she even had the chance to answer. A hiss left him when her fingers accidentally brushed against the bandage, "Fuck. Sorry." "Didn't even feel that.", he lied, then called out as he kicked the door behind them closed, "Goodnight, bud. Don't be staying late."

Zoë Dusanne was born Zola Graves (March 24, 1884 - March 6, 1972) in Kansas to Letitia Denny and John Henry Graves, a stonemason. She was an art dealer and collector who opened Seattle’s first professional modern-art gallery, the Zoë Dusanne Gallery in 1950 She was self-taught concerning modern art, and her interest was nourished early in life by her parents. In 1903 she spent one year at Oberlin College followed by a semester at the University of Illinois, Urbana. She married George Young (1904-1912). The union produced a daughter. She married Dr. Frederick Boston (1919-?). In 1928 she left Seattle for New York. Her passion for collecting modern art began. At the height of the Great Depression, she found that artists were the first to feel the impact of hard times, and often sold their works at a fraction of their value. She amassed a collection of modern art which she brought back to Seattle in 1942. In 1947, she built a home overlooking Lake Union that was designed to double as an art gallery, she opened her collection to the public. She sold and donated her works to the Seattle Art Museum and facilitated the donation of many others. She lent works to the Henry Art Gallery and SAM for exhibition. At her urging, Life magazine featured the four artists who would become known as the “mystical” painters of the “Northwest School”—Mark Tobey, Kenneth Callahan, Guy Anderson, and Morris Graves—in its September 28, 1953 issue. She traveled to Europe, persuading Peggy Guggenheim to donate a Jackson Pollock to SAM. She could not stop the 1958 demolition of her home and gallery necessitated by the building of the Seattle Freeway. In 1959 she reopened in a new location but was unable to recapture the luster and glory of her original gallery. In 1977, SAM honored her with an exhibition of contemporary art that included works by many of the artists whom she had promoted. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #womenhistorymonth https://www.instagram.com/p/CqKqLJCO1M1/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Secret Book of Flora Lea | Patti Callahan Henry | Published 2023 | *SPOILERS*
When a woman discovers a rare book that has connections to her past, long-held secrets about her missing sister and their childhood spend in the English countryside during World War II are revealed.
In the war-torn London of 1939, 14-year-old Hazel and 5-year-old Flora are evacuated to a rural village to escape the horrors of the Second World War. Living with the kindle Bridie Aberdeen and her teenage son, Harry, in a charming stone cottage along the River Thames, Hazel fills their days with walks and games to distract her young sister, including one that she creates for her sister and her sister alone - a fairy tale about a magical land, a secret place they can escape to that is all their own.
But the unthinkable happens when young Flora suddenly vanishes while playing near the banks of the river. Shattered, Hazel blames herself for her sister's disappearance, and she carries that guilt into adulthood as a private burden she feels she deserves.
Twenty years later, Hazel is in London, ready to move on from her job at a cozy rare bookstore to a career at Sotheby's. With a charming boyfriend and her elegantly timeworn Bloomsbury flat, Hazel's future seems determined. But her tidy life is turned upside down when she unwraps a package containing an illustrated book called Whisperwood and the River of Stars. Hazel never told a soul about the imaginary world she created just for Flora. Could this book hold the secrets to Flora's disappearance? Could it be a sign that her beloved sister is still alive after all these years?
As Hazel embarks on a feverish quest, revisiting long-dormant relationships and bravely opening wounds from her past, her career and future hang in the balance. An astonishing twist ultimately reveals the truth in this transporting and refreshingly original novel about the bond between sisters, the complications of conflicted love, and the enduring magic of storytelling.
Hazel and Flora Linden are 5 and 14 years old when they are removed from their home by the Britain government, telling parents all over that it is best and safest to send their children to smaller towns in the countryside to avoid the ravages of war. WWII is happening all over Europe, and so Camellia Linden sends her children off to the countryside of Oxfordshire, where they billet with a single mother, Bridie and her 14 year old son, Harry.
They live there with the Aberdeen's for a year as the war rages on around them. They meet new friends, and begin to love their life. Flora, being so young, doesn't quite understand why they needed to leave, so Hazel had adapted a fairy tale world, just for the two of them, to escape to when they need it, a magical land called Whisperwood. But, when Flora disappears, believed to have drowned in the River Thames, Hazel understands that Flora was looking for Whisperwood in real life without her, and Hazel believes that Flora did so because Hazel had left her alone while she and Harry kissed nearby in a hollow part of an oak tree. Hazel is upset, and swears to never see the Aberdeen's again.
As an adult, Hazel has majored in literature, and works for a rare bookshop called Hogan's. She has never stopped looking for Flora, and she believes that she is still out there somewhere. Hazel has even kept in touch with the police inspector who worked Flora's disappearance all those years ago. For 20 years, Hazel has never stopped searching.
On what was supposed to be her last day of work at Hogan's, having accepted a job at a larger rare bookshop called Sotheby's, she has preparing to log new books into the ledger when she comes across a fairytale written by a young American author named Peggy Andrews, called Whisperwood and the River of Stars. This stops Hazel in her tracks, as it is her story. Without thinking or hesitation, Hazel slips the parcel inside of her bag and returns home, looking through the book for any details that her sister was alive. While much of the story is changed, Hazel begins to wonder if this Peggy Andrews could possibly be Flora, having somehow made it to America and has turned their story into a real fairy tale for all the world to see.
Hazel gets in touch with the publisher, who refuses to give out any details about Peggy so Hazel can reach out to her, but on the illustrations that came with the book is the number and address for Peggy. Hazel calls and explains why she is contacting her, going so far as to give her her return number but Peggy doesn't believe a word of this, as she was always told that it was her and her mother's story, told to her after the death of her father at Pearl Harbor in order to keep her calm.
Peggy finds solace in her friend and neighbor, Wren, who tells her that it is okay to question why this woman has reached out to her, to not trust what her mother believes to be some crazy stalker coming up with stories claiming the story of Whisperwood belongs to her. When Wren comes up with the idea that they should travel to London in order to meet Hazel, against her better judgement, Peggy agrees and the two whisk off to London.
On the day that Hazel and her boyfriend of a few years, Barnaby, are meant to leave for Paris, Kelty, her closest and dearest friend arrives with a telegram that tells her that Peggy is in London, and would like to meet with her the next day. Leaving an angry Barnaby behind, Hazel returns home to prepare for the meeting with the American author, in hopes that Peggy will show up and be Flora, having been gone for nearly 20 years to return to them.
But when they do meet up with Peggy, she isn't Flora. Her mother soon arrives, having followed Wren and Peggy to London in the hopes of protecting her daughter from the truth. But when Camellia appeals to her as a mother, Mrs. Andrews, tells the truth: her sister had been sent to London to work as a babysitter and teacher for children who had been taken away during Operation Pied Piper. Whisperwood was told to her from a child, and she returned to America with that story and told it to Mrs. Andrews and her daughter, Peggy, in order to help with the loss of her father too soon.
Peggy wishes to be of more help, but is also damaged by what her mother and aunt had done to the poor family standing before them. However, she forgives her mother, who becomes much more accepting of Wren and that Peggy has her own life to live as well.
Hazel returns to Binsey, finally accepting that she needs to speak to a reporter by the name of Dorothy Bellamy in order to help track down more information. Hazel had been avoiding Ms. Belllamy, who was trying to reach out to her in order to write an article about the River Child, Flora, as she had done on countless other stories of the children of Pied Piper. Dorothy agrees to meet Hazel in Binsey, and when she arrives, Hazel realizes that the person she was avoiding for so long is in fact her long lost sister.
Dorothy, who goes by Dot, is shocked to learn this news, but it becomes apparent that it is true, that she is in fact the lost child of Operation Pied Piper. A story she was chasing for so long was because she felt a deep connection to it, but didn't understand why. Camellia also comes to Binsey, and instantly recognizes Dot as Flora.
They ultimately learn the truth: an American nurse, by the name of Imogene Wright, saw Flora that day all alone at the river's edge, spooked her so that she fell into the river and was able to save her. Believing that she could protect her better than Hazel and Bridie could, hid her away inside of a hidden room in the church before taking her to live with her sister, who had recently lost a daughter to consumption. Imogene then became Dot's aunt, whom Dot adored, but as it turns out, she ultimately ruined a lot of lives. Imogene is arrested for the crime and will stand trial for what she had done.
Dot begins to reconcile her old life with her new one, but she won't hurt another family because of someone else's mistake. Though she does begin to have a relationship with her sister and mother. Hazel eventually returns to work at Hogan's, before eventually moving to St. Ives with Harry, who is now her husband and the father of her unborn child. They are opening up their own rare bookstore where their able to create original illustrations for books. Peggy and Wren attend the grandopening, informing everyone that they are now engaged. It is a happy ending for what had been a terrible nightmare that spanned over the last 20 years.
Discussion Questions
Hazel and Flora Lea's childhood experience was inspired by Operation Pied Piper - a real life event in British WWII history in which over three million children were evacuated from their homes to live with volunteer families throughout the English countryside. Were you familiar with this piece of history prior to reading the novel? It has been quite some time since I was in any sort of history classes, so I do not recall ever learning about this, although I'm sure that I have heard of it at least from at some point in my past. However, for the sake of the question, I enjoyed not recalling the story as this led to more of a shock value seeing it/reading it for the first time as I couldn't imagine what those poor families went through to be told that it was best to send their children away to billet with other families, some of whom may not have been good people like the woman who chose to billet Kelty.
Hazel takes great care of the rare books while employed at Hogan's Bookshop, wearing white gloves and logging items meticulously. IN passing, the owner, Edwin, has mentioned the enormous value original illustrations can add to a book. What is revealed about Hazel's character in the decision to take the copy of Whisperwood and the River of Stars along with the illustrations? What about when her initial denial of taking them is factored in? I don't think her rash decision to take the copy of Whisperwood says anything of her character. She saw something that rightfully belonged to her and her sister, and made a terrible judgement call, of which she eventually opened up and confessed was her doing just the following day. Her first denial of taking them was her hope that she could come up with some answers before returning them. But her relationship with Edwin and the store itself, showed that they still trusted her despite her horrible judgement in that moment.
When Hazel makes the phone call to Peggy Andrews seeking information about the book, she gets an unexpected answer about the origin of Whisperwood and the River of Stars. What does this broadly say about the creation of storytelling and mythmaking? Can someone ever own a story? Oh yes, someone can own a story. It's why there is a thing called plagiarism. However, Hazel never did anything with Whisperwood in order to fully claim the story, she even says that she doesn't want to claim it as her own to Peggy when it is believed she is wanting to take the story back; she only wanted to find her sister. But, the ability for the story to be twisted into something different is the magic about storytelling. While the written story can't be taken away, the vision of the story can be twisted in order to create an entire new story with similar aspects. It has happened before in novels.
Bridie Aberdeen, as a character, is presented as extremely warm and nurturing yet with some eccentricities. The town gossips about her practices and the mysterious disappearance of Henry's father. What was your first impression of Bridie? Did that change at any point during the book? My impression of Bridie never changed; she was put in a very difficult position, having to bring in two more mouths to feed during a very scary war time. While she originally wanted to bring in a male child to help out in the fields around her home, she instead chose to bring the two sisters home with her, and she loved and cared for them like they were her own children. In order to protect her own child, she let the town believe that she was a witch of sorts, though I don't think anyone truly believed this either.
Hazel and Flora's mother had several opportunities to take her daughters back to London but ultimately made the decision that they were safer and better served in Binsey with Bridie and Henry. Do you have a positive or negative opinion of their mother? Would you have made a different choice? Camellia was only doing what the government had told her was the best thing to do. Take for example Kelty and her mother. Kelty's mother sent her away to protect her, though this led to Kelty living with a terrible person and she went back to London, where eventually the threat of war made its way to them and Kelty's mother passed away. I don't feel negatively toward any of the parents who were doing what they thought was best; if I had been in this situation, especially during uncertain times like that, I would have done the same thing to protect them.
Only through an honest conversation years after the fact do Hazel and Henry discover their shared guilt over what happened to Flora. Would that silence have lasted as long if Hazel and Henry were older when Flora first disappeared? (Henry should read Harry...not sure if this was my fault or the question was written wrong). I don't think so - I think it would have lasted even if they had been older when it happened. Hazel's reaction would have been the same.
Barnaby is supportive of Hazel's desire to reach out to Peggy Andrews and even encourages to get in touch with Dorothy Bellamy, thinking a reporter may be able to help, yet he eventually struggles with Hazel's never-ending quest and its effect on their relationship. Does Barnaby's ultimatum change your view of the character? Did Hazel take her quest too far? I didn't really care for Barnaby since his first appearance in the book. While the two of them had agreed together that they weren't ready for marriage, especially after the death of his own child and the dissolution of his first marriage, he just seemed a bit too...bougie, for lack of a better word. They didn't seem to fit together; they were too different in the end. And in my opinion, Hazel did exactly what she felt was the right thing to do. She wanted answers, and she received them in the end.
How did you feel about the reveal of Dorothy Bellamy's past? Did Dorothy's Aunt Imogene have justification in her decision to remove the child the way she did? There is never any justification for kidnapping a child. Unfortunately, she did have a mental health problem because of what she witnessed during her time in the war, but this still does not excuse what she did in the end. She ruined a family in order to save her own and give her sister the child that she had lost. In her mind, her intentions were good but in reality, it was not the right thing to do.
How do the specific time periods - WWII and 1960 - affect the way that the case of Flora's disappearance was handled? Would the outcome have been different if set in present day? When Flora first disappeared, the Blitz first happened and this overtook Flora's disappearance in the media. People had other things to worry about other than a child that had gone missing; entire families were being decimated during the war; men and women losing their lives daily. Plus, the resources back then were not like they are today, regardless of it being 1940 or 1960.

Weird Junk Finds and Key Take-aways from spending time with Spiritual Leaders
Weird Junk Finds and Key Take-aways from spending time with Spiritual Leaders
This week we talk about the take-aways from spending time with the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, plus weird junk finds. Because why not? Filmmaker Peggy Callahan spent a lot of time listening to spiritual leaders while working with author Doug Abrams who co-authored The Book of Joy. She wrote for the Today Show, “Their message is needed now more than ever. We’re heading into the “most…

Mission: Joy (Finding Happiness in Troubled Times) ★★★
[This piece was originally published in the monthly newsletter for the First Presbyterian Church of Delray Beach.]
On the surface, it seems difficult to find two men more different than the Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama. One is a Christian, the other a Buddhist. The first was born and raised in desperate poverty in apartheid-era South Africa. The second was raised as royalty in a lavish Tibetan palace. Tutu’s upbringing was heavily influenced by his loving mother and abusive father; Gyatso was taken from his parents at two years old and raised by monks. Desmond has spent his life in his native country; Gyatso has lived in exile for fifty-six years. Finally, one has given his life to God while the other is literally considered one by his followers. That both men have been instrumental figures in modern human rights struggles, each winning the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts, isn’t surprising. That the two diametric opposites are dear friends is.
First meeting at a museum in New Jersey in 1990, the two holy men hit it off right away. One of Tutu’s daughters describes the two octogenarians’ energy together as being similar to that of “eight year old boys.” Indeed, when the two reunite for the first time in years for the filming of Louis Psihoyos and Peggy Callahan’s Mission: Joy (Finding Happiness in Troubled Times), not even the strictures of age can keep the two from giggling and joking like schoolchildren. As the wizened Tutu departs his plane in Dharamsala, India and reunites with Gyatso on the tarmac, their years positively melt away as they tease and embrace each other. In this moment, the two are young again.
It seems appropriate then that the topic for Psihoyos and Callahan’s documentary is, as the title suggests, the nature of joy and whether or not it’s feasible in today’s world. The film is predominately an interview with the two holy men as they’re asked various questions about it as well as questions concerning hope and despair. Animated interludes recreating scenes from their childhoods demonstrate their familiarity with all three: Tutu with his experiences with poverty, abuse, and racist violence under apartheid; Gyatso with losing his family, home, and homeland at the hand of Chinese invaders.
Yet their answers are astonishing similar: happiness and joy come from two places. The first is from within. “The ultimate source of a meaningful life is within ourselves,” Gyatso explains. One can choose to wallow in despair over one’s circumstances or one can choose—the key word here being “choose”—to recontextualize one’s life. Gyatso uses his own life as an example. Instead of viewing his life in exile as a tragedy, he’s deliberately reframed his experiences in his mind as a unique opportunity to escape the “Golden Cage” that trapped generations of Dalai Lamas in their monastic estates. Unlike other Lamas, he’s been afforded the chance to travel the world and learn about things he otherwise couldn’t. To reevaluate one’s life as a refugee in political exile as a blessing in disguise takes a superhuman level of mindfulness, and I sincerely doubt Gyatso would be so cruel as to suggest other people going through intense trauma should merely seek the silver lining. But I am reminded of the ending of Martin Scorsese’s Kundun (1997), a biopic of Gyatso that ends with him answering the question of whether or not he’s the Lord Buddha by saying: “I believe I am a reflection, like the moon on water. When you see me, and I try to be a good man, you see yourself.”
The second source of joy comes from helping others. Here the film turns more emphatically towards Tutu’s struggles as an anti-apartheid civil rights leader, risking life and limb to help free his fellow Africans from the last bastion of politically legalized white supremacy in Africa. Through acts of service, he was able to find compassion not just for his fellow persecuted blacks but for the white police officers and soldiers who terrorized them. At several points in the film scientists and clinical experts are brought in to comment on Tutu and Gyatso’s teachings and one of the most astonishing of these comes when Dr. Sonja Lyubomirsky of UC Riverside is asked to corroborate Tutu’s claim that acts of kindness can change someone. She answers in the complete affirmative, explaining that medical trials have demonstrated that people who consistently perform acts of kindness see their blood and RNA transform on a biological level to better match a healthy immune profile. Helping others, being compassionate, acting kindly…all these things literally rewrite our bodies to live stronger, longer lives. It would seem the Most Reverend Archbishop Desmond Tutu has a point. But then, so too does His Holiness the Dalai Lama about personal mindfulness. Indeed, the film seems to argue that the Buddhist notion of interior cultivation and the Christian emphasis on acts of service are two halves of the same coin. It is by combining both that one can find the same kind of joy, the same kind of happiness, that these two old men share in each others’ presence during their twilight years.

list 10 different female faves from 10 different fandoms
I was tagged by @aqueenvictorious
Sorry for the image quality on a lot of these. I really didn’t spend a lot of time searching/capping/editing any of this, but I did want some visuals.
Peggy Carter - MCU/Agent Carter
Peggy is wonderful when she appears in the Cap movies, but she really had her chance to shine in Agent Carter. I’ll never stop being disappointed that it never got a third season to resolve that tremendous cliffhanger. Agent Carter wasn’t a uniformly great show, but it was absolutely a great showcase for Peggy’s character.
Ronnie Lee - Schitt’s Creek
I was tempted to go with Stevie, but in the end, Ronnie won. Every face Ronnie makes and every line she delivers is gold. Her feud with Patrick is everything. She doesn’t get nearly enough screen time, but every moment she’s on screen is glorious. She has no time for you shit and I love it.
Carolyn Knapp-Shappey - Cabin Pressure
She is absolutely ruthless. If you take your nasty, hateful ex-husband’s beloved private jet in the divorce, paint ‘My Jet Now’ on the tailfin, and start your own charter airline with it, are you anything other than an absolute bad ass?
Shannon Rutherford - Lost
I didn’t stick with Lost much past Shannon’s death. Maybe I’ll go back and watch the whole thing eventually? I know she shows back up in flashbacks and alternate timelines(? listen, I really don’t know what happened in later seasons). But I was in a Sayid/Shannon role-play for YEARS, long after my partner and I both stopped watching the show, and Shannon will always have a place in my heart.
Claire Temple - MCU/Defenders
Is this cheating? Technically this is not an entirely new fandom because Peggy is also MCU, but Claire is an entirely different part of the MCU that doesn’t really intersect with Peggy, so I’m counting it. The moment she started pulling Matt out of dumpsters, I was in love.
Éowyn - The Lord of the Rings
LotR is not exactly full of women, but Éowyn is an absolute scene-stealer in the movies. I haven’t read the books since shortly before the movies started coming out, so ... it’s been 20 years, but I remember being enchanted with her there as well. She gets some of the best lines and one of the most iconic moments in the series.
Isobel Crawley - Downton Abbey
I was really not sure who I’d pick for Downton Abbey. I considered Mary, Sybil, and Daisy, all of whom are characters I enjoy reading and writing in fic and role play, but Isobel is the one who I really love most exactly as she appears on screen.
Nita Callahan - Young Wizards
This is another fandom that has gone on without me - I read the first five books, but others have been released since I stopped reading. Nita Callahan was a very big deal for me in late elementary school, though, and I literally originated the Young Wizards category on fanfiction.net. It did not exist as its own category before I requested it, and to this day I believe the oldest fic in the category is one of mine.
Stokely Mitchell - The Faculty
You may not even be aware that there was a fandom around The Faculty, but there was. The fandom mostly centred on Casey and Zeke, but if there was a third most popular character for fandom love, it was Stokely. Stokely is a badass and honestly, this is a great look for Clea DuVall.
Carlye Breslin - M*A*S*H
If you’re a casual viewer of M*A*S*H, you may not remember Carlye because she only appears in one episode, but she casts a long shadow in fandom as the one that got away. I know Margaret is probably a better choice, and I do love her in her own way, especially once she separates from Frank. But “The More I See You” is one of my favorite episodes of M*A*S*H, and it’s great to have someone call Hawkeye out for being such a mess when it comes to relationships. Plus - how gorgeous is Blythe Danner in this role?
