This is one of the big reasons we should all be masking in public.
By Jan Greene
Kaiser Permanente study supports COVID-19 vaccination of children, pregnant mothers
An analysis of unvaccinated children who had COVID-19 between 2020 and 2022 found they were more likely to be hospitalized if they were 6 months old or younger, and more likely to be treated in an intensive care unit at ages 12 to 17. The study was published in the journal Influenza and Other Respiratory Viruses.
The overall risk of hospitalization from COVID-19 remained relatively low, the authors said, but if children were hospitalized, they could face serious outcomes. Most of those admitted to the ICU had no comorbid conditions that might have made their symptoms worse.
“When you look at children who are being hospitalized, we see particular concerns for teens who may end up in the ICU or need oxygen, and infants who are too young to be vaccinated,“ said lead author Ousseny Zerbo, PhD, a research scientist with the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research. “Inoculation against COVID-19 is still an important childhood vaccination.”
The study examined records for more than 1.1 million children who were members of Kaiser Permanente Northern California between 2020 and 2022. The researchers found 423 children hospitalized for COVID-19 during that time and analyzed trends within the group. The children were all unvaccinated against COVID-19.
They found babies 6 months and younger had the highest incidence of hospitalization. There is no COVID-19 vaccine available for this age group, though research shows a mother’s vaccination against COVID-19 during pregnancy can protect the baby.
“Previous research has shown that a mother’s vaccination can transfer to her baby while she is pregnant,” Zerbo said. “The risk of hospitalization for an infant can be reduced so much by getting that done during pregnancy.” However, vaccination rates in pregnancy remain low — the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the average was 13% in spring 2024.
The risk of ICU admission was highest among the teenaged patients. Overall, 20.3% of the hospitalized children were admitted to the ICU, but admission was 36.1% among ages 12 to 17.
Most (91.8%) of the pediatric ICU patients with COVID-19 had no comorbidities — unrelated diseases or conditions that might make them sicker or more vulnerable to COVID.
While COVID-19 variants have been viewed as less likely to lead to hospitalization in the population overall as time has gone on, this study actually found later variants to result in higher rates of hospitalization among children. Among infants 6 months old and younger, the incidence of hospitalization for COVID-19 was 7 per 100,000 person-months during the pre-Delta variant period, 13.3 per 100,000 during the Delta period, and 22.4 per 100,000 during the Omicron period.
Despite evidence of pediatric hospitalization with COVID-19, vaccination rates in children have remained low. Just 6% of children ages 6 months to 4 years were up to date with COVID-19 vaccine in spring 2024, the CDC reports.
The study also found inequity by race or ethnicity in health outcomes among hospitalized unvaccinated children; Black and Hispanic children had higher risk of hospitalization than white children.
The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Additional co-authors were Nicola P. Klein, MD, PhD, Julius Timbol, MS, John R. Hansen, MPH, Kristin Goddard, MPH, Evan Layefsky, BA, Pat Ross, BA, and Bruce Fireman, MA, of the Division of Research Vaccine Study Center; and Dao Nguyen, MD, and Tara L. Greenhow, MD, of The Permanente Medical Group.

Palestinian Ministry of Health:
After 50 days of the Gaza European Hospital being out of service, the hospital has resumed operations this morning, serving patients and visitors once again, despite the scarcity of resources and operational challenges. The hospital will be providing services in key specialties, including surgery, pediatrics, and internal medicine, around the clock.
In response to the announcement by the “israeli” occupation declaring the area around Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Hospital a combat zone, which has caused panic among patients and led to some fleeing the hospital out of fear of a repeat of previous hospital raids, the Ministry of Health confirms that the hospital remains operational. The medical staff is committed to continuing their mission, with nearly 100 patients still in the hospital, including 7 in the intensive care unit. The Ministry of Health also calls for the urgent protection of the hospital, its patients, and its medical staff.

7 months into being a registered nurse and I decided to take a leap of faith and applied for the pediatric intensive care unit and pediatric cardiac intensive care unit. By the grace of God after four successful interviews, I have been offered to shadow on both units and will begin the internship program in January.
Words cannot describe the excitement and thankfulness I’ve been feeling since getting those emails. This has been my dream job for the longest and I can’t believe it’s really happening!

{CW: discussions of hospital (ICU specifically), surgery, death, light religious beliefs}
The intensive care unit is always a busy place.
Tumblr media
They truly did schedule me to perform surgeries today. It was a rather busy day.
I wonder, how would the humans react to finding out a vampire performed their surgery? I suppose that doesn’t matter since they’ll never find out.
Tumblr media
As it was the intensive care unit, those who are there are unfortunately already in critical condition. Which means sometimes doctors hit a wall after attempting different treatments, then comes the part of telling the family that there’s nothing more you can do for the patient. Surgery is always a risk, good doctors do what they can, but it doesn’t always work.
Not all the patients I worked on today made it. I had to share the news with the families and explain in some details what exactly happened. There’s always a mix of reactions, however the one that intrigued me the most was the reactions of these who are religious. Of course there are those who immediately angrily blame God, but there are also those who accept the death as the will of God, “God decided it was their time, we must respect that”… If only they’d recognize that the situation could have been prevented had their family member taken their health seriously and spoken to their attending physician… However, I cannot directly express my complete thoughts on the matter; I have duties as a “doctor”, but I also have duties as a priest. Everyone clings to something in order to keep going, if there’s nothing, the pain may become too much to bear. It’s essential I suppose, and for these people, religion is their answer.
Tomorrow I return to the ICU, except it won’t be with adults. It will be the pediatric ICU, I may take Charles with me.

The wounded child, Abd al-Rahman Amer al-Zaghal, 14, is lying in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital. Regarding the health condition of the wounded boy, Firas Al-Jabrini, the lawyer of the Wadi Hilweh Information Center - Jerusalem, explained that the boy's health condition is stable after undergoing head surgery, pointing out that he and the lawyer, Siraj Abu Arafeh, were able to visit the boy after the end of the operation. He said: "The boy was hit by a bullet in the middle of the forehead, which penetrated his head and exited from the left side "above the eye". Currently, he is under anesthesia and connected to respirators, and suffers from skull fractures. He was transferred from the "resuscitation" department to the "intensive care" department. Lawyer Al-Jabrini pointed out that an extension session in absentia will be held for the wounded boy, Al-Zaghal, this evening in the Magistrate Court. Nabil Sharha - the uncle of the child Zaghal - denied what was reported in the police statement, "that Abd al-Rahman had a Molotov cocktail in his hand and threw it." He said: "He had 10 shekels in his hand, and he was going to buy bread for the family. My sister's children support the family after the death of their father."
