P.E.I. Green Party wasn't ready for election, may lose seats from 2019: experts

As the Prince Edward Island election approaches its final week, the Green Party is fighting to hold onto its historic gains from the last provincial vote -- a battle some experts say could result in lost seats.

Hannah Bell, a Green MLA who decided not to seek re-election, says the party simply wasn't ready for this campaign.

While Progressive Conservative Leader Dennis King did call the vote six months before the province's fixed election date, Bell says all political parties knew a campaign was coming this year. She says her party was not doing enough grassroots work or planning in the months and years leading up to the April 3 vote, leading her to believe the party's seat count may suffer.

"I do feel, and I have been saying this internally and externally, that the Green Party has missed an opportunity to build momentum in advance of an election," Bell said.

"You need to start planning for the next election the minute you finish an election. And in hindsight the Greens struggled with building and expanding on the fact they had such a momentous impact from 2019."

The P.E.I. Green Party made history four years ago when it won eight seats in the legislature and became the first Green official Opposition in North America.

The PCs formed a minority government, becoming the first one the province had seen since the 19th Century. That gave Peter Bevan-Baker's Greens more influence and opportunity to advance initiatives and policies than opposition parties of the past, although the Tories did secure a slim majority after a 2020 byelection.

Today, however, the Green Party's momentum appears to have stalled. At the outset of the campaign, the Greens were polling well behind the PCs. A Narrative Research poll suggested the Greens had the support of 22 per cent of decided voters in February, compared with 49 per cent support for the Progressive Conservatives.

The Greens have also struggled to attract candidates and were forced to leave two ridings without anyone carrying the party banner.

"I won't pretend that I'm not disappointed that we don't have a full slate, and I can tell you it wasn't for lack of trying," Bevan-Baker said in a recent interview.

Many supporters have expressed a desire to run for the party over the last four years, but found it hard to drop everything to run when the early election call came, he said.

Some also expressed a reticence to run due to the challenges of public life and how "ugly and petty and cruel that can be," Bevan-Baker added. "I think that puts some people off, particularly people from marginalized communities and women."

Both Bevan-Baker and Bell said they believe the public mood is also hurting the Greens. Both say they felt Islanders viewed 2019 as a "change election," while this campaign does not have the same energy.

But Bell also says she believes the party should have been doing more to prepare well before the lead up to this campaign. For example, the party has only established a handful of district associations and has not been expanding its membership in areas outside of the urban ridings where its support is strongest, Bell said.

She blames the party's "inexperience" in elected office -- no Green MLA was ever elected in P.E.I. before 2015 -- but also says her colleagues and party staff have been more focused on policy than on building the grassroots.

Don Desserud,a political science expert based in P.E.I., says he believes the Green Party's breakthrough four years ago was due largely to disaffected Liberal voters looking for an alternative after 12 years of Liberal governments.

That's why he says this election will be a test of how much support the Greens are able to retain, or whether 2019 was an "aberration" in a province that has typically elected either Liberal or PC MLAs.

Desserud said some disaffected voters who were parking their votes with the Greens in 2019 may have grown to like the party.

"But when I look at those polling numbers, I don't see that," he said. "I see the Greens back to where they were before."

The Liberals, who had four seats heading into the election, have been polling well behind the PC party and slightly behind the Greens. They are also not running a full slate of candidates for the first time since 1919.

Liberal Leader Sharon Cameron has made it her focus to target the Green Party in this campaign in an effort to win back some of those disaffected voters. Cameron has even taken the unusual step of running against Bevan-Baker in his riding, breaking the political convention of not pitting leaders against one another.

P.E.I. historian Ed MacDonald says the province's two-party system is deeply entrenched in older generations of Islanders, many of whom saw their party allegiances as a kind of family inheritance.

But he says the Greens could maintain their gains and attract new voters, given the shifting demographics of the Island thanks to population growth from aggressive immigration efforts.

"The electoral landscape on P.E.I. has been and is changing," he said.

"There are a lot more newcomers to Prince Edward Island from other parts of Canada, from other areas of the world who don't share in that traditional kind of electoral inheritance. So the swing vote, I think, is much larger than it ever was, especially in urban areas."

Bevan-Baker says criticism of his party's election readiness is "fair," but he remains hopeful that Islanders will focus on the Greens' substantial work over the last four years in Opposition, including getting 18 bills passed into law.

"We showed that we deserve to be there," Bevan-Baker said.

#OneNETnewsEXCLUSIVE: Friday Night Funkin's Newest Modified Game introduces with a Suspected Yandere illegally crucifies to His Girlfriend during a Rap Battle

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK -- A modified gaming in fictional characters of Friday Night Funkin' (FNF) was gone viral but controversial on Social Media and the YouTubers almost slightly worldwide. The original game was started as a demo to Newgrounds by November 2020, while the modifications either in original or referenced fictional characters like Sasha Waybright from Amphibia as an example are permitted legally in-game within the coming several months this year of 2021.

For those if you're wondering for what does this game about... It's a weekly one-on-one rhythmic rap battle game to compete against a level-based opponent, most likely a villain until the Boss Finale individually within 3 songs every Friday night, as moderated with a song referee and monitoring with his Girlfriend named Cherry (not an actual real name). The first player was named by Keith a.k.a. Boyfriend (which is also not a real name) must use the arrow keys using your local keyboard on your Window's PC. It's free to play and open-sourced which is a better reminiscent of Dance Dance Revolution.

Currently, the newest Original Character (OC) from a teenager Yandere suspect was named by "Sky" and it's made by a game creator known as BBPanzu. Here's the gameplay walkthrough at the dubbing in-game:

In a phone interview with a Yandere suspect (Sky) told exclusively to OneNETnews, she was discovered a handsome new boyfriend and fangirling him on foot by soon-to-be a love date as a stalker like Keith but... Sky founds out that Cherry seeks a relationship issue in jealousy and she was committedly planned to murder her, crucified her or frankly both of them by force if later rejected unnoticed. She releases her 3 new songs this week against Keith alone as a main antagonist herself.

During her controversial battle with a new single as a same name title herself adds, Sky was heartbroken'd and rejected by offering a love date to Keith. Cherry notices a right-of-way concern relationship during a rap battle, while her feelings with Keith looks really fine smoothly.

Much unfortunately, Cherry has decided publicly to get married; leaving only for Sky gets a total friendzone'd and defeated regularly.

Sky has no choice for a revenge in preparing her final song of the boss called "Manifest" after she was transformed into an evil side of Yandere role to herself and allegedly kidnaps to Cherry with the illegal crucifixion using a wood board background and a wooden nail for their hands (in substituted for a sign of the Jesus cross) without requiring an attempted murder.

As the final song slightly comes to a close, right after a confrontation rap battle with evil Sky... She is unforgiven to Cherry at the moment and commits to kill via the illegal crucifixion in a death sentence, which is resulted for a serious violation under a Revised Penal Code in the Philippines after from this sentence of Reclusion Perpetua and even thus a 3rd prayer line was broked by the Apostles' Creed rule saying, "Who suffered under a Pontius Pilate, it was crucified, died, and was buried".

Keith's girlfriend (Cherry) was partially died on the scene just a few hours ago, after a "Manifest" song was ended in an empty void to darkness for nothing. They lived together sadly by force between Sky and Keith with a simple kiss to herself.

Our Research Team of OneNETnews tries to seek the originated and exact location between the BBPanzu & GameBanana but, the information was denied in our E-Mail interview. The Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), Catholic Media Network (CMN), St. Catherine de Alexandria Parish in Dumaguete City and the Federal Bureau of Investigation in America (FBI) have criticized the illegal crucifixion for a modified in-game to Sky of Friday Night Funkin' (FNF). 2020 Favorite Video Games

I don’t know if I am an outlier or if this is the same for everyone else but I really did not play a lot of games this year. 2020 was a very harsh year for all of us, especially for me for some personal reasons. So to get to the chase, I am just gonna say it left me not doing much in what little free time I did have, and I didn’t play much either. Usually I try to keep my lists for ‘favorite of the year’ to only titles released that year but since I played so little this year, screw it. I am gonna include any game I played this year regardless of release date.

Collection of SaGa

By far a flawed rerelease. It’s bare bones: there are no advance features you would usually expect out of these kinds of emulated rereleases like save states, fast forward, or rewind, and there was no real effort made to touch up almost 30 year old localizations that had to meet Nintendo of America’s then harsh standards. This really is just 3 roms slapped into a nice looking interface with an option to increase the game speed (which by the way you better use, the characters walk very slow in these old games). 

I am bit harsh here, but only because I thought the Romancing SaGa remasters and the upcoming SaGa Frontier remaster all looked like they got a great budget and a lot of love while this is just another Collection of Mana situation (moreso specifically talking about Seiken Densetsu 1/Final Fantasy Adventure/Adventures of Mana part of that collection). I would have loved to see Square Enix do a bit more for these older games. Or at least include the remakes. Seiken Densetsu 1 had two great remakes, both unused in Collection of Mana, and all three of these original SaGa titles have remakes that have never seen the light of day outside of Japan. How great would it have been to get the Wonderswan remake of SaGa 1, as well as the Nintendo DS remakes of Saga 2 and SaGa 3? 

But my gripes aside, these games are still fun as they ever were. Replaying SaGa 1 specifically during the holiday season really helped calm me down and made me feel at ease. It’s easy to forget but even in their Gameboy roots there are a lot of funky and weird experimental choices being made in these games. They aren’t your run-of-the-mil dragon quest (or considering the gameboy, maybe pokemon would be more apt) clones. 

Raging Loop

Perhaps my favorite game of the year, Raging Loop is one of the best visual novels I have ever played hands down. The level of creativity and splitting story paths that went into it is simply mind blowing. The basic premise is both a wonderful throwback to the old days of Chunsoft sound novels while still modern and somewhat reminiscent of both Higurashi and Danganronpa. Essentially you play as Haruaki, a poor slub that got lost in the mountains with no clue where to go until you stumble upon an old rural village with a strange history and even stranger superstitions. Before you know it there has been a murder and the Feast is now afoot.

The less said about Raging Loop the better, although I do want to say a lot about it one day if I ever can write a proper review of it. This is a gripping game that will take hold of you once you get into it though and never let go. I actually 100%-ed this and I very rarely do that. I got every ending, every bonus hidden ending, played the entire game twice to hear all the hidden details it purposely hides on your first play through, played all the bonus epilogue chapters, unlocked all the hidden voice actor interviews, collected all the art work, etc, etc. I was just obsessed with this game, it’s that damn good! And the main character is maybe the best troll in all of video games, god bless Haruaki. 

Root Double

From Takumi Nakazawa, long time contributor to Kotaro Uchikoshi’s work comes a game any fan of Zero Escape or Uchikoshi in general will probably enjoy. Root Double, like its name suggests is a visual novel with two different routes, hence Root Double. The first route stars Watase Kasasagi, the leader of an elite rescue team in the midst of their greatest crisis yet that could lead to nuclear devastation as they try to evacuate a nuclear research facility that has gone awry. 

The other route stars Natsuhiko Tenkawa, an everyday high schooler whose peaceful life is thrown into turmoil when he stumbles upon a terrorist plot to destroy the nuclear facility in the city and his attempts to stop them. Together the two separate plots weave into one and creates a really crazy ride. Part Chernobyl, part science fiction, any fan of the genre will easily enjoy it. And hey it’s kind of relevant to include on this list too since it just got a Switch port this year (I played it on steam though).  

Snack World

I was shocked upon starting Snack World as it is instantly incredibly charming, witty, and downright hilarious at times yet I heard almost zero people talk about it. EVER. This game is Dragon Quest levels of quirky though, and the localization is incredible. The game has such an oddball sense of humor that works really well with its presentation right down to the anime opening video that sings about the most bizarre things. Instead of the usual pump up song about the cool adventure ahead we get stuff like wanting to go out to a restaurant and eat pork chops. 

The self aware/fourth wall breaking humor is just enough to be really funny, but doesn't overstay its welcome and always makes it work right in the context of the dialogue. And finally, just everything; with the menus, the name of side quests and missions, and the character dialogue -- are all just so witty and full of quirky humor. This is one hell of a charming and funny game and addictive to boot.

Trials of Mana

Trials of Mana has gone from one of those legendary unlocalized games, to one of the first major breakthroughs in fan translation, to finally getting an official English release complete with a fully 3D remake. In a lot of ways from a western perspective this game has had an incredible journey. As for this remake itself, I really found myself having tons of fun with it. I loved the graphics, and the voice acting while a bit on the cheaper side almost kind of adds to the charm since both the graphics and acting really give it an old PS2 vibe. I know that is probably just more me being weird but yeah, I had to say it. 

I really hope Square Enix sticks to this style of remake more often, instead of just doing Final Fantasy VII Remakes that break the bank and involve extensive tweaking to both plot and game play. I’ll take smaller budget projects that play more like the original game any day personally. I wouldn’t mind if they also deliver a brand new Mana game all together in this engine either. 

Utawarerumono Trilogy

This year saw the release of the first entry in the series, Utawarerumono: Prelude to the Fallen--and thus finally after three years since the sequels Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception and Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth came out in 2017 the trilogy is now complete in English. I ended up binging through Prelude to the Fallen very fast shortly after it came out and immediately jumped on to the sequels. Perhaps the best part of 2020 was that I finally played all three of these fantastic games, and did so back-to-back-to-back. Playing the first Utawarerumono was an experience I will never forget, it was like visiting old friends again that I haven’t seen in ages, by and large thanks to the fact that I saw the anime adaption of the game when I was much younger, nearly a decade ago. Back then I would have never of dreamed that I would get to play the actual game and get the real experience. 

And it only got better from here, as all three games are such wonderful experiences from start to finish. The stories are all so deep, and by the time you get to the third entry, Mask of Truth, it’s crazy to see how they all connected over so many years and weaved together into a plot much bigger than they ever were. What carries it beyond all that though has to be the fun and addicting strategy role playing game aspect, which while a bit on the easy side, is still so much fun and helps make the game feel better paced since you get to play the conquests your characters go on and not just read about all the battles they fight. Beyond that the games are packed full of awesome characters, and I know I’ll never forget the amazing leads in all of them. Hakuowlo, Haku, and Oshtor will all go down as some of the greats to me. 

Ys: Memories of Celceta

Ys: Memories of Celceta is a full 3D remake of Ys IV, a rather infamous game in Falcom’s Ys series. Not to get bogged down too much into the history of Falcom but by this point they were facing a lot of hardship and had to outsource this entry to other developers, and thus passed it on to two particular developers they had a business relationship with, creating two unique versions of Ys IV. Tonkin House who had worked on Super Famicom port of Ys III with Falcom ended up creating their own YS IV entry, Mask of the Sun for the very same system, where Hudson soft who had produced the much beloved Ys Books I & II remakes for the Turbografix (PC Engine) CD add-on created their own Ys IV entry Dawn of Ys for that console. Both games followed guidelines and ideas outlined from Falcom themselves but both radically diverged from each other and turned into completely different games. 

Falcom finally putting an end to this debate on which version of Ys IV you should play have gone and created their own definitive Ys IV in 2012 for the Playstation Vita. I played the 2020 remastered version of this remake on my PS4. I even bought this on the Vita when it first came out but I am horrible and only horde games, never play them. So it was a lot of fun to finally play this. 

Memories of Celceta is probably one of the best starting points for anyone looking to get into Ys, especially if you only want to stay with the 3D titles as out of all the 3D entries this explains the most about the world and series protagonist Adol Christian. Beyond that it’s just another fantastic entry in a wonderful series that has a few good twists hidden behind it, especially for long time fans of the series. 

Random Video Game Console Stuff

Xbox Has Blue Dragon: I actually got an Xbox One this year for free from my brother. Because of that I started to play Blue Dragon again and there’s a lot I would love to say about this game. I don’t know if I am fully committed to replaying it all the way through however but I find myself putting in a couple hours every few days and enjoying myself again. Does anyone else remember Blue Dragon? I feel like it really missed its audience and had it come out nowadays and probably for the Switch it would have really resonated with the Dragon Quest fandom a lot more instead of being thrown out to die on Xbox and constantly compared to Final Fantasy VII and the like which it had nothing at all similar with. 

The Turbografx 16 Mini: This was probably one of the best mini consoles that have come out and I feel like thanks to the whole 2020 pandemic thing it was largely forgotten about. That’s a shame, it has a wonderful variety of great games, especially if you count the Japanese ones (god I wish I could play the Japanese version of Snatcher included), and a wonderful interface with fantastic music. One of these days I would really like to be able to play around with the console more seriously than I have already. 

Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon Never Existed: So Nintendo localized the first ever Fire Emblem game on Nintendo Switch which is awesome to see them touching Famicom games again--I haven’t seen Nintendo of America rerelease old Famicom titles since Mysterious Murasame Castle on the 3DS, but their trailer hilariously made it seem like this is the first time ever they released Fire Emblem when in fact they had already localized the remake Shadow Dragon on the Nintendo DS nearly 10 or 11 years ago. I and many other fans I talked to all found this really hilarious, probably solely because of how much they kept repeating the fact that this is the first time you will ever be able to experience Marth’s story.

All that aside though I have to say the collector edition for this newly localized Famicom game is probably the most gorgeous retro reproduction I have seen in a long time, and I really spent many many hours just staring at the all clear glass mock cartridge. I have found myself really obsessing over retro reproductions during 2020, and obtained quite a few this year. I really hope this trend continues to go on in 2021 as recreating classic console packaging and cartridges is a lot of fun.

Finn’s POV

“Hi Finn!” She said as she sat down next to me. I gave her a simple wave before looking back down at my phone.

She started poking my side, “Heyyyyy, evil Irish boy, cutie.” I looked up at her, “How are you?” She asked.

“I’m fine. How are you?” She lit up, “I’m great, I got my match tomorrow. And I finally got something I’ve been waiting for.”

“Isn’t that interesting.” She tapped my shoulder before shrugging off her hoodie, showing my t-shirt, my merch. I nodded, “Nice.” I couldn’t even hear what she was talking about, I couldn’t stop looking at every feature of hers. Her lips, her beautiful eyes, her beautiful smile. 

I don’t know when this “crush” started. Maybe when she first walked into the Performance Center two years ago. Maybe when she was the first to greet me when I got back to NXT. Hell it could’ve started when she brought me coffee last week. I don’t know. All I know is that I’ve got it bad. “Hello, Finn?” I looked up into her eyes, “Yeah?” 

“Did you hear what I said?”

“Nope.” I admitted, acting like I didn’t care. “Well, okay. Um, I’m gonna leave you alone, bye Prince!” And I didn’t mutter a word, God what is wrong with me? She’e sweet, she’ll happily say she likes me back, or politely say she doesn’t feel the same.

I just gonna find out where she went. I stood up and started walking in the direction she went. I looked around the hallways, and I heard her voice, I’m not one to eavesdrop, but when I heard my name, you bet I’m gonna listen in.

“I don’t know what I’m doing wrong, Kayden. I always try to be nice to him, I always check up on him, and I even bring him coffee and Legos.” She blurted out, clearly stressed.

“Listen,” I heard the voice of Kayden Carter, “he doesn’t really talk anyone, so don’t beat yourself up.” Y/N sighed, “Maybe he’ll come around. I know the real him,” she chuckled, “he’s too soft.” 

I walked away, well great. She thinks I hate her. Exactly what I want. 

But she was right, I was always so negative. Tomorrow, that changes. If she believes my acts.

The Next Day

I walked through the doors of the PC, flowers and bracelet box in hand. I got numerous asks “Who are those for?” “You got a date?” “Does Finn have a girlfriend/crush?”

I quickly put them in the locker room, hiding them. And I went out to greet Y/N, she was getting ready for her match. Her ring gear was new, and it looked great. “Hi Y/N.” She looked over and smiled, “Hi!” “So, are you excited?”

She was clearly surprised about my sudden interest in talking to her, “Yeah! I mean, this is really my first ACTUAL opportunity to be #1 contender. I hope I win this thing.” 

“I hope you do too.” We stared at each other for a moment before she asked, “What time is it?” 

I looked at my phone, “8:55.” “Oh crap I gotta go!” She grabbed her jacket and started to walk away, “Bye Finn!” “Good luck out there!” She turned back and gave me a kiss on the cheek before leaving, “Thank you, Prince.” I held my cheek for a moment and smiled, before putting my hand down quickly and looking around, making sure no one was looking at me.

My heart was still racing though. And it probably was going to until I gave her the gifts after her victory. I sat watching the match, interested. Her entrance was positive, like her. But as soon as her jacket was off, Io and Rhea both delivered cheap shots to her. 

She was thrown around the ring, outside the ring, and hit with foreign objects before the match even started. But, she still got up. She stood in her corner, ready for the bell to ring. And once it did, the attacks started again. She was defenseless, until she reached a kendo stick. She had finally gotten the upper hand, and she was now one on one with Io. “You got this Y/N.” I mumbled. Cause I knew she did.

And she did, before Rhea attacked her once again. At this point she was at risk of injury.

Not on my watch.

Io climbed to the top rope but I ran out there, hearing the commentators yell out my name, and I pushed her down to the ground.

Hey, no DQ.

Rhea got up in my face while I was on the apron, I pointed behind her and when she turned around, Y/N kicked her right in the face.

Y/N stood up, and she finally got her arm raised in the air. Finally, she’s gonna have a chance to be NXT Women’s Champion. She slid out the ring and ran up to me, giving me a hug. “Thank you.” She mumbled in my ear.

She was crying, I couldn’t tell if it was cause of the pain or her victory, but she was crying.

We walked backstage together, my arm around her shoulder.

“Thank you, so much.” She said, hugging me again. “Hey uh, follow me.”

She looked nervous, “Oh uh, okay.” I walked her to the locker room and I told her to wait outside. Quickly grabbing the gifts and walking out, she lit up when she saw them. “Uh, these are for you.” She accepted them, “Thank you,” she shook her head, “I don’t get it, you’re usually so distant?” “Well uh, you’re right, I am kind of soft.”

She turned red and said, “Oh uh, I guess you heard that.” I nodded, hugging her again.

She finally opened the box, “Oh Finn it’s beautiful!” I leaned towards her, “Read the charm.” She grabbed it, “For the most beautiful girl.” She looked up at me, happy. “Oh my gosh.” I was about to say something before she planted a kiss on my lips. She realized what she did, “That was supposed to be kept in my mind.”

“Then I can get this out of my mind.” She looked confused, “Wanna go on a date with me?”

She smiled, “Of course. Just don’t push someone off high places.”

I shrugged, “I’ll try and contain myself.” “Well uh, I gotta go do an interview, #1 contender things.” I motioned for her to go, “Go go.”

And once again, she turned back and kissed my cheek, but when I held it this time, I kept it there.

She’s the only one I wouldn’t be heel for.

Or that John Corbett was born two months after Jo Davidson, making it impossible for his mother Anne-Marie McGillis to also be her mother.

The 2021 F1 season is off to in inauspicious start before it even begins. The season-opening Australian Grand Prix — which originally was scheduled for March 21, has been moved to the back of the season and is now set for Nov. 21, 2021.

That would make the Bahrain Grand Prix the first race of the 2021 Formula 1 Live season on Sunday, March 28.

The Chinese Grand Prix also have been moved to a date to be determined, due to ongoing travel restrictions because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Discussions on when that race could be run are ongoing, F1 says. Meanwhile, look for the Italian Grand Prix at Imola in that April 18 slot.

From there, if all goes according to plan — and it certainly feels a little odd typing that sentence given the state of things — the series would wrap up Dec. 5, 2021, back where it closed out the 2020 season, in Abu Dhabi.

The Best Albums of 2020 (and from the Before Times)

I read a lot of year-end music roundups, and several this year have come with a resonant caveat: It’s been harder to discover new music this year, both because of physical limitations (no shows, no record-store browsing, no chats with friends about your latest finds), and because the way we used music fundamentally changed. It certainly did for me. Rather than serving as the backdrop for a commute or a night out, it created moments of solace from cabin fever while doing dishes, or showering, or running semi-weekly errands. So I often turned to what was comfortable and familiar, songs that conjured memories and feelings to get me through the day. Even on the rare occasions of social listening, the groups I was with drifted into nostalgia — middle school dance tracks, mid-2000s emo, inherited dad rock, even songs from just a year or two ago, when everything was simpler, relatively speaking.

That’s not to say nothing new moved me. There was a handful of albums and songs that were crucial to getting through the doldrums. They soundtracked bike rides, long walks, longer drives and lots of small moments mentioned above. But I don’t think I can think about my favorite music of this year without thinking about the albums of the past that got me through it. Besides, one of the many lessons 2020 taught is that time is a bizarre illusion anyway. (This exercise also lets me write about some recent albums that I didn’t get to write about when they were actually released.

So here are the albums, past and present, that made 2020 bearable. I hope you found yours, too.

Tame Impala, “The Slow Rush”

Tame Impala’s fourth LP came out on Valentine’s Day. That afternoon, Claire and I had a lunch date to mark the occasion before we got on a plane to visit my parents. The night before, we had gone out to dinner with friends visiting from San Francisco and then to a bar, where we huddled next to strangers on a water bed. Roughly a month later, all of this would be unimaginable, and Kevin Parker’s lyrics to “One More Year” would be eerily prescient as we settled into this new normal:

But now I worry our horizon's been nothing new 'Cause I get this feeling and maybe you get it too We're on a rollercoaster stuck on its loop-de-loop 'Cause what we did one day on a whim Has slowly become all we do

The song is really about surrendering to time, and not worrying about it passing in spite of your ambivalence. The opening chants of Parker’s “Gregorian Robot Choir” make it easy to surrender. They carry you into a world where, as the cover art suggests, all that time you were worrying about has already passed, so you might as well dance. At the same time, the songs that follow, like “Borderline,” “Breathe Deeper” and “Lost In Yesterday” make it easy to remember what it was like to dance in a sweaty room with people you love, and to look forward to doing it again, after a little more time passes.

Fleet Foxes, “Shore”

There’s something comforting about the fact that Fleet Foxes released this record on the exact moment of the autumnal equinox. It’s a reminder that nature has its own rhythms that carry on regardless of what occurs in our human lives. They give us a measure of certainty in uncertain times. One of these rhythms — death — looms large in “Sunblind,” an ode to Robin Pecknold’s departed musical forebears: David Berman, Bill Withers, John Prine and others. This song exuding calm acceptance shifts into “Can I Believe You,” which wrestles frankly with doubt and fear.

These tracks contain profound contradictions, but sonically, they're both bright, hopeful and sure. That’s what made this album such a balm in the sixth month of this pandemic, a time of both growing darkness and hope for what might be on the other side. It reminds us that there’s power and beauty in feeling all these things at once.

Lil Uzi Vert, “Eternal Atake”

This one spent two years in label purgatory, but it finally arrived in March to prove Lil Uzi Vert can do it all. He’s at his most versatile here, spitting and crooning, boasting and balladeering. “You Better Move” is an early standout packed with playful nostalgia, including a beat that samples that classic PC pinball game and delightful jabs like these:

Yeah, step on competition, changin' my shoes Green shirt, bitch, I'm Steve, where is Blue? Every chain on, I pity a fool I'm an iPod, man, you more like a Zune Made her eat on my dick with a spoon, ew Versace drawers, bitch, you Fruit of the Loom

Then there are the melodic tracks like “Urgency,” which compel you to hum along even on the first listen. The excellent diversity made it worth the wait for this hourlong journey to another planet.

Sturgill Simpson, “Cuttin’ Grass Vol. 1: The Butcher Shoppe Sessions”

I haven’t spent much time with Sturgill Simpson outside of 2014′s “Metamodern Sounds in Country Music,” and I can’t say I’ve ever listened to another bluegrass album all the way through. But these new cuts of songs picked from Simpson’s catalog are wonderfully enticing. Simpson puts the talents of his backing band front and center, and their harmonies and rhythms illuminate his vivd songwriting in new ways. It was a great introduction to the genre for me.

Fiona Apple, “Fetch The Bolt Cutters”

I got here after the hype, after the perfect 10, after all the year-end number-ones. Fiona Apple lives up to all of it. Her compositions are complex and evocative, the lyrics tender and biting at once. Her artistry is unsparing. The chorus to the title track is already getting stuck in my head, and I can’t wait to spend more time with this one.

Bea Troxel, “The Way That It Feels” (2017)

Almost a decade has passed since I first saw Bea Troxel play. She was in an incredibly talented trio with two of my high school classmates: Maeve Thorne (who has an entrancing solo EP of her own), and Rita Pfeiffer (the violinist on this record). They ended up winning my school’s battle of the bands, and I got to interview them for the student newspaper. Shortly after our senior year, they recorded an album that still outshines most of today’s indie folk. So I jumped at the chance to all three of them again in Brooklyn. 

Troxel’s performance in particular was a revelation. I won’t ever forget how I fell into a trance as she picked away at “Talc,” which exemplifies her gift for natural metaphor. I haven’t stopped playing her record since, and it’s been a constant comfort throughout this year. Her voice is one of a kind, her songwriting is rich, and the compositions flow together beautifully. I can’t wait for more; in the meantime, “The Way That It Feels” will be on repeat.

Travis Scott, “Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight” (2016)

There’s been much ado about the brilliance of “Astroworld,” Travis Scott’s magnum opus, but I have a soft spot for his sophomore LP, where he reached the peak of the spare and heavy sound that started to take shape on “Owl Pharaoh.” There are plenty of sonic layers here, and the ordering of the tracks is a craft in itself — a series of peaks and valleys that glides from the haze of “beibs in the trap” to the climax of “goosebumps” and then into the cool waters of “pick up the phone.” It feels like Scott is guiding you to and from these destinations. The journey is, as The Weeknd might put it, “wonderful.”

Harmonium, “Harmonium” (1974)

One of my pandemic binges was “Letterkenny,” the sharp Ontario-set sitcom with top-notch banter and a great soundtrack full of indie hits and Canadian deep cuts. The fight scenes are elegantly choreographed, but so are the handful of sequences at the end of key episodes that reveal the show’s emotional bedrock. One such scene is set to Harmonium’s “Un musicien parmi tant d'autres” — the main characters are reveling in a bar with their Québécois pals, whom they’ve just helped beat up a rival group. As the song builds to its climactic chorus, leading man Wayne, surrounded by couples, realizes his longing for companionship. Another fight breaks out, but instead of joining in, Wayne makes his way through the slow-motion fray toward the woman he’ll propose to in the next season. (Their relationship later falls apart, but that doesn’t undercut this scene’s beauty.)

This is probably the first foreign-language album I’ve listened to in full, but all of it evokes that feeling for me — the joy of walking through the chaos to reach what’s really important. Not a bad sentiment for these times.

Bon Iver, “22, A Million”

To talk about this weird, dark and brilliant album, I need to talk about “715 - CR∑∑KS.” Everyone I’ve talked to about the third track on “22, A Million” either loves it or can’t stand it. I’m devoted to it to the extent that it was my most-played song on Spotify this year. It oscillates between tenderness and fear, between silence and explosions of sound. The lyrics are an epitome of Justin Vernon’s cryptic poetry. It’s isolated and spare and enthralling and beautiful in its own bizarre way — just like the rest of the album, which is rich with themes of persevering through the darkness in spite of the uncertainty about when the light will appear. Vernon is alone on “CR∑∑KS,” but he’s accompanied by a cacophony of his own voice. As alone as we might feel right now, there’s always someone else shouting through the darkness with us, even if we can’t see them.

Cuphead is now available for PlayStation 4 via the PlayStation Store (North America, Europe) for $19.99 / €19.99 / £15.99, developer Studio MDHR announced.

“Many of us on the team grew up exploring the worlds of classic PlayStation titles, from Resident Evil to Vandal Hearts,” said Studio MDHR co-director Chad Moldenhauer in a press release. “It’s surreal to think about players adventuring through the Inkwell Isles with a PlayStation controller in hand. To all the impassioned PlayStation fans who’ve sent us messages over the years: we’re so excited for you to get a chance to experience Cuphead firsthand. We’re also hugely thankful to the wonderful team at Xbox, who continue to empower us to bring our game and our story to new audiences.”

Studio MDHR also announced a free update for the Xbox One version of Cuphead, which will add a digital art gallery, behind-the-scenes commentary features, and playable soundtrack to the game. A release date was not announced.

While Studio MDHR did not share any new media for the upcoming downloadable content “The Delicious Last Course,” the studio’s Maja Moldenhaur said the following during an interview with Geoff Keighley: “This year kind of just threw everyone for a loop, and we’re still working hard on [the downloadable content]. In true Cuphead fashion, it’s taking us a little longer than we thought, but we want to make it a memorable experience. And to be honest, I think that we ultimately probably announced it a little bit too early based on when we actually put pencil to paper. But at the end of the day, we want it to be a fulfilling experience and live up to Cuphead, and it will come out when it’s ready.” Moldenhaur also confirmed that it will release on all platforms simultaneously.

Cuphead first launched for Xbox One and PC in September 2017, followed by Mac in October 2018 and Switch in April 2019. Here is an overview of the game, via its Steam page:

As I mentioned in the previous roundup of updates, Yunchang Games really loves showing off more promo work than their actual work. They are nice images, but they could at least give small tidbits of updates about what's happening with this game. Last I heard, it is supposed to be fully released some time this year. Well, we still have another couple months before the year ends. The other thing I heard for why it's getting delayed again is because of the pandemic, and they're actually listening to feedback from their beta testers so they're fixing whatever they can to please the fans. 3. I'm not surprised that rumours about a Devil May Cry 6 is already in the works. Especially when this rumour is coming from DuskGolemn (aka AestheticGamer1). Sure that person has some history with CapCom, but it doesn't mean whatever comes out of this person's statuses are always 100% true. It's plausible since Devil May Cry V did so well with their sales and such, but I'm gonna be cautiously optimistic about this info given. 4. I feel like for CapCom's SSS pack, they should include a Vergil figure from Prime1Studio or Kotobukiya. Sure a soundtrack, tshirt, and poster are nice, but I feel like there should be more. b) Nice that they haven't forgotten about Vergil's official coat being available for purchase. Sucks that these official coats/jackets are so damn expensive. Yes, there is good that happens in this fandom as well like fundraisers for good causes, fans supporting other fans, even chill folk that don't like to start drama (Like that wholesome status post I shared in the list of updates for example). My problem is how people are either living under a rock, or are being in denial with the problems that surface with this fandom. Let alone being hypocritical where they share an opinion regarding another opinion that they disagree with in a rude manner, then turn around and  share something more positively eye-opening that's not so rude so they cover their tracks with their mistakes they've made before (Not sure if I worded this properly. Hope you get what I mean. One example is how one of the "elitists" mentioned about how "casual fans" are the most toxic people he's come across. Meanwhile he's complaining and whining in a toxic manner about PC players not getting Special Edition, then he turns around and shares that wholesome post about DMC4 players vs fans to make himself look good). I just want everybody to keep the peace with one another instead of being entitled, egotistical, self-centered, spoiled-rotten, hypocritical, idiots. The other issue this fandom is facing is content thieves. They've been on the rise for quite some time now, and people aren't doing a damn thing. I've been fighting with a few Facebook groups regarding this kind of act, but all they want is clout...Which is ridiculous if you ask me...I ask that if any of you see fan artists', screen captors', meme and mod creators', and cosplayers' content being posted where they state on their images or profiles that they don't want their content shared, or need permission to ask about their content being shared, message these artists or report the images. Even say something to these content thieves. As an artist who's had my stuff stolen before, I don't condone content theft... For those of you who know me in my Original Devil May Cry Sanctuary group on Facebook, and The Red Devil's Chronicles page on there as well, I always credit the content creators for their work, but I am also cautious on who wants their stuff posted or not. And as of late, I've pretty much stopped sharing others' fan art to respect these artists' wishes of not wanting their content shared without permission. If any of you want your stuff shared on the Facebook page, don't be afraid to let me know on here or there, I will give credit. I've been debating about whether to completely delete the fan art album on there and start anew. What do you guys think? As I've said, not all things are bad in the Devil May Cry fandom. We do have the good side of it, too. I'm hoping it gets better regarding that good side of it. It really sucks having to see stuff like this happen. But we good fans can change things for the better if we do something. This may come off as nerdy or cheesy, but as Alucard from Castlevania states in Symphony of The Night, "The only way for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing".
