Don't ignore one part of your life. We're happier when all the pieces of our life are generally in good shape than when one area we care about is perfect and everything else is falling apart. Think about how organizations make decisions. They don't make a decision about the organization as a whole..rather, they make them in separate units, features, departments or products. For example...If a school assigns a first-floor classroom for an early morning exam..despite the fact that the maintenance crew is cutting the grass at that very same time ...right outside that particular window...you have a problem. The room was likely chosen by someone due to the size and ease of access to the room. The grass cutters were sent out by their manager because it's cooler in the mornings and easier to work outside. So now two tasks conflict with each other and NEITHER will be a success... the exam is disrupted by the noise and the lawn cutting is stopped before it's finished to suit the needs of the students. but you have an advantage over an organization because you know all YOUR needs and priorities. Your task is to take all of them into account as you pursue your goals. This is where balance come in. Tricky little thing...but not impossible. Just remember....when you say NO to one thing....you're saying YES to something else. Everything works until it doesn't so while its working keep on that track and be consistent Don't over complicate things by trying to do the latest and greatest or think that doing more will get us there faster when is won't. 20 years ago we changed our lifestyles introducing regular exercise and being more conscious about what we consume. Often it takes trial and error to achieve our goals and sometimes we do it at the first attempt. People often give up if things don't go right and usually end up starting over again and probably trying the same thing (oh the definition of madness is here again!) Instead of throwing the towel in make small adjustments and keep trying. Forming new habits is very hard as we have to use our conscious minds where we'd usually use our unconscious minds which is mentally taxing on us as unconscious thought is our default mode, have you ever driven to work and can't remember doing it, well that is your unconscious mind running the show. Goal setting is something we do everyday in some form or another. Getting to work on time, getting the kids to school, meeting a work deadline, grocery shopping, etc all take prep, thought and execution. Wanting to lose weight or run a race also need the same kind of attention, hoping to lose 2 lbs a week or run a 5km in under 30 minutes won't happen unless we plan, prep and execute.
