… if you want to read my essay on how gay Nick Carraway is it’s under the cut
Until recent years, very few authors had the courage to express homosexuality in their work for fear of institutional punishment or negative social reaction. With stories like that of Oscar Wilde, writers were accurately terrified to explicitly explore the diversity of the sexual and romantic interests of their characters. Despite this, they were not stopped and authors chose to implement their gay characters with artistic subtlety. F. Scott Fitzgerald's most well known novel, The Great Gatsby, homes one example of this type of character. Although he does not live in a time period where he can be open about it, Nick Carraway is a homosexual man and this fact is crucial to truly understanding his self and his relationship with Jay Gatsby.
Perhaps the most damning evidence of Nick's sexuality is the fact that the only sexual encounter he is implied to have had is with Chester McKee after the party in New York (28), but it is not all. Nick's homosexuality is most casually clear in the descriptions he gives of the people in his life. Although he does acknowledge past romantic relations with women, he does not read as particularly interested in them. When questioned about a rumoured fiancée out West, Nick remarks that he is very opposed to "being rumored into marriage," (15) and in his first meeting with his supposed love interest, Jordan Baker, Nick compares her to a cadet (an exclusively male occupation at the time) and points out her most masculine features as ideal including her small breasts and erect carriage (8). In comparison, Nick's descriptions of the men around him are rich with intrigue; Nick notices how Tom Buchanan's eyes establish dominance in his face and the way his muscles move under his clothing (5). When Nick speaks about the train conductor on the hottest day of the summer, he critiques people who think of kissing flushed lips and laying with a partner in the heat despite no one else in that scene expressing those feelings (87). The suddenness of this flustered complaint implies that Nick is reacting to his own desires; desires he wishes he did not have.
While Nick is at least vaguely attracted to multiple men in his story, there is one he is consistently interested in throughout: Jay Gatsby. From their first meeting where Nick goes on about how pleasant a smile Gatsby has (36) onwards, Nick is very fond of Gatsby, going so far as to emphasise that he is the only rich person he did not end up disgusted by (2) and that all of the East was haunted for him after Gatsby's death (137). In Gatsby's life, Nick even expressed his affections to him in whatever ways he could. For example, when Nick agrees to reintroduce Gatsby and Daisy, he does not allow Gatsby to reimburse the favour (62). Also, after Myrtle's death, Nick only leaves Gatsby's side because he feels like he is intruding (112), returns to a bed he can not fall asleep in, and takes the first opportunity available to meet Gatsby again at dawn (113). Nick listens to Gatsby's story then (114), something nobody else would do in favour of spreading scandalous, borderline slanderous rumours.
Nick claims he is not a judgemental person, but proves himself wrong as the novel progresses in regards to every person he has met but one. Despite remarking that he disapproved of Gatsby "from beginning to end" (118), he was equally endeared to him. Nick also claims to be an honest person (44), which he proves not entirely true either. Realising Nick's true feelings for Gatsby reveals the intricacy of his character and calls into question the reliability of his narration. Although his intentions are always sympathetic, Gatsby is by trade a bootlegging criminal and yet even after meeting Meyer Wolfsheim and being told about his business (54), Nick plays ignorant about Gatsby's involvement. To Nick, the idea of Jay Gatsby is related only tertiarily to the idea of "Wolfsheim's men". Nick makes this clear every time he visits Gatsby after Wolfsheim's men begin working at his house by how suspicious he always is of them, even describing one's face as “villainous" (86). Nick does not judge Gatsby as the same as these people nor the Buchanans despite not being so different in truth because he is already in love with him and truly wants to believe he is a good person at heart. Even Tom Buchanan is aware of this on some level, showing his cognisance after Gatsby's death by telling Nick that "(Gatsby) threw dust into (Nick's) eyes just like he did in Daisy's" (138).
To ignore Nick's sexuality is to intentionally misunderstand his character and The Great Gatsby as a story. On his surface, Nick Carraway is a single objective voice in a world of desires and deceit, but as much of The Great Gatsby does, his character requires the reader to look below to his own human biases if they intend to comprehend him.
#keep in mind I wrote this FOR MY GRADE TWELVE ENGLISH CLASS#I was SEVENTEEN you have to be sooooo niceys to me#and also. notice the line where I so briefly mention Mr McKee…………#um. my teacher at actually Asked about that because he had never picked up on it before 💀#so I had to. explain to this man who is older than my parents probably and does powerlifting the phallic metaphor etc etc#and I had to SPEEDRUN IT TOO… because this was right before class started so the other kids were going to be coming in at any second…#the great gatsby#natsby#nick carraway

meh HoT gifs (3/?)
#alek gifs#ninjago#ninjago krux#ninjago acronix#hands of time#time twins#alternate title to this series is : stuff i noticed after watching this season 10 whole times#okay actually thats a lie. i realized this the 3rd time around#i think of acronix and how he barely makes any decisions for himself and i go crazy#ppl equate that with him feeling forced to do stuff.. uh hes always been a follower guys!!#cue him calling wu “master wu” even after the twins betrayal. him liking machia bc shes “mean” and bossy#he has no issue with following orders lol. prepare for a long acronix rant one day#contexts -> gif 1 barely counts i just wanted to include him looking at krux. he does this a lot during that fight#gif 2 is before they kill blunck and raggmunk (idk how to spell their names still ... sorry)#gif 3 is before they were going to kill wu in the golden hour legacy short. which is canon !!#gif 4 is before they sent themselves into the temporal vortex#that one post that was like “are we still doing revenge? yeah? cool” bc thats basically acronix#there is something fundamentally wrong with these two's brains but idk how to describe it#krux who literally lost his mind after losing his brother to the point he adopted an entire identity#“he just needed to go undercover!!” counter point as soon as acronix came back he was unable to pretend to be saunders. he acted super weird#like when kai was in the museum he couldnt pretend to be this person he wasnt. acronix was back !!! so was he. krux was 100% going to kill#the smith sibs if maya and ray didnt comply. also.. canonly they knew him when they worked as teachers back in s3. he watched them grow up#and pretended all was well meanwhile their parents were being forced to work and slave away to build the iron doom. he is not normal#then you have acronix who thrives off of violence and is described as throwing himself into battle like a blunt object. has no regard#for himself as a person and just takes (almost) everything his brother says as gospel. s7 couldve done smthn really cool with how#the only thing the twins ever really disagreed on was technology. also ive went on a semirant about how krux's hatred for tech was misplaced#hatred for losing acronix. wanted to travel to the pre modern era? okay well whyd he pick 40 years ago specifically. also NOTE that they#went back after their past selves had lost. they wouldve faired better if they went and helped their past selves. also the reversal blade#had already fallen so when the twins went back in time there was two kruxes. he literally went back to when he had been all alone for the#for the first time. he went back to when his life was ruined and his brother was gone!! but he had nix with him this time . ughdhf

very carefully explaining to the princes of asgard how recessive genes work and skirting around details because eye colour is the textbook example and one of them has green eyes when neither parent does. hair colour is the other example in the textbook but well one of them has black hair when neither parent did.
#teacher sweating like haha yes it IS possible!#(statistical prevalence is not in the syllabus unfortunately haha)#forget that they're aliens and could have reversed recessive/dominant patterns#teacher sweating even more as the only other example that comes to mind is the textbook example of hair#which is even WORSE because Odin and Frigga both have blonde hair. and Loki's is not blonde.#0%#but surely both parents are mages and that is some un-researched field and you shouldn't confuse two young boys with such nonsense talk#HAHAHA#HA.

Fucked up how an adult can make a simple benign poor choice of words one time and give a child a complex forever
#at this one teacher#where are you now teacher#were you ever aware that ur choice gave me crippling self hate and shame for years to come#did you ever know it was even a poor choice of words and that it was bad? or did you never think o it again#like tell me#YOU NECER SPOKE TO ME ABOUT IT OR ANYTHING#would you have???? did you ever want to?!? I’ll never know#i don’t even remember what u look like it ur name but I remember sitting at the beach at 11 years old thinking about how I was#was too dirty and evil to be a woman and that I had let all women down#that I was a monster#i remember my stupid ex friend couldn’t even be ducking nice to me one ducking time about it either#i don’t remember what the class was about but I remember looking at the other girls and feeling like an ogre who didn’t deserve to be in#their presence#i know this incident was not the root of these issues and probably just a catalyst but it sticks out as easy to remember for some reason#i know you were a psychology/PSHE teacher and would end up preaching mental health to us in a lecture many years later#i wanted to take psychology for my GCSEs because I was really interested (and good at it I think)#but you were the only teacher for it so I didn’t take it#i remember at parents evening my mum and I sat opposite you and we talked about how I wanted to do psychology#but I declined and refused to tell anyone why#it was because you were the teacher and I felt ashamed#you couldn’t have known but I kind of wish you’d asked me why I changed my mind or at least something#instead you just looked at me as if you knew#but said nothing. AS IF YOU AGREED#THAT I WAS BAD.#so that settled it#you made it clear to me you meant what you said#and there was no point in me trying to fix it#so I never took psychology#i think I could have been so good at it#do YOU

By implying that children are too stupid and rude to learn about the world and learn how the world works and how to interact with others, you are casting responsibility away from the people who are responsible for that child's upbringing and placing the blame on the children (who don't have the autonomy given to them to be allowed to decide what they want) who can't help what they do and do not learn, often.
If the children aren't okay, then investigate why before turning to thought-terminating clichés of, "Well, the kids are just stupid and dumb and aren't even worth the effort because they're lazy!"
#youth liberation#i was really bothered when i saw this clip where this person was saying almost verbatim that...#...'kids [these days] are too STUPID and they're teachers are scared!'...#...why is the blame placed on the kids who have no control over school curriculum and what their home life is like or if they have money...#...it's because when you place the blame on the people with no power or control you don't have the responsibility to change circumstances..#...you essentially keep the status quo while simultaneously belittling a group of vulnerable people...#...and thus you feed into the cyclical nature of the broken education system#the kids these days AREN'T okay but it ISN'T THEIR FAULT...#...it's the fault of late-stage capitalism and poorly-funded education and a world that wasn't even built with them in mind...#...they had NO PART in the creation of the world which is hostile to their entire existence#don't mind the incorrect usage of their in the second tag i was so focused on how pissed i was#also remember how a good chunk of these kids lived through *checks notes* the fucking PANDEMIC LOCKDOWN#which was a clown show in terms of supporting kids and their parent/s#some places handled lockdown in the US better than others but holy fuck in my area at least it was a nightmare#what do you expect from parents who are now working full-time and teaching part/full-time and parenting full-time?#what support exactly are you expecting they recieved? because you'll likely find they got either a little or NONE#hilarious that i used the wrong their in a post subtweeting about education LOL#look i was focused on how PISSED i was lol cut me some slack here

i feel it's so fucking stupid and ungrateful but it still hurts a little when someone gifts me something i just don't like. i don't know. i know it's dumb and inaccurate to astrain that much meaning to a simple gift, but it feels kinda like they don't know me. i guess it feels like people don't see me, like a reminder that the person i reflect and the person i feel like are incredibly different.
#two fairly recent examples jump to mind#last year my class did a secret santa#the guy who got my name barely knew me so instead he asked our litterature teacher for tips#i was doing an effort to participate a lot in her classes and discuss stuff and i felt like she was an adult i could really trust#and adult who Gets It#and she picked just. the wrong gift. a classical philosophy essay.#stuff i hate reading. stuff i hate thinking about.#i said thank you to both of them and tried to read it during christmas break still. but i was right. i hated it.#and this year's christmas#recently i tried patching things up with my parents and we are a lot more communicative now#so they've opened up that my demand not to receive any gifts was painful to them#so we had an agreement: we write open-hearted letters to each other on christmas.#and they can gift me something if they'd like but no pressure if they don't find anything they feel would be a good gift#bc i myself opened up about the whole ''inaccurate gift'' thing being one of the reasons i dislike receiving stuff#and guess what. christmas comes. they got me a printed card from an artist whose work we saw at a local art thing earlier that year.#that artist does mainly either plants or nice architecture. stuff i love.#they picked the ONE work of hers that doesn't look like that. some reinterpretation of the great wave of kanagawa#a piece which i dislike with a passion for aesthetic reasons#i had promised i'd be honest if their gift missed the mark but tbh i couldn't. it's just an aesthetic thing it's completely begnin.#it's not like they spent lots or tried to pick something that was USEFUL#so i smiled and the picture is hanging with other stuff in my room#and i thanked them and i can't express how genuinely glad i am we have a better relationship#but man i felt my heart break a little under the tree in that moment#idk#i know it's silly but it makes me feel weird. and cold.#broadcasting my misery#vent

Hi do you see Albus as morally grey character who's also pretty cold and distant from other people? There are many interesting posts about him that describe him as such and it does make sense. He was probably someone who wouldn't let people get close to him and it would be a challenge to manage that. I can see Harry doing that but his case is special. What do you think? Was Albus a good man?
I do think Albus was a good man. Plenty of good men have to make decisions that do not weigh easily on the moral scale. A protagonist or supporting character whose methods and motives are purely good, unchallenged and uncomplicated by other players is an unrealistic protagonist or supporting character. Albus is as far from that as it's possible to be. His scheming made us uncomfortable, it made him uncomfortable, and it kept Harry alive. More importantly, he wanted to keep Harry alive, even against all the overwhelming evidence that he'd have to die.
I don't think he's cold. He is an expert at emotionally distancing himself from people, yes. But he does it in a very warm way, with little self-deprecating jokes and first-name terms and remembering your birthday and the pet you mentioned having. Albus Dumbledore knows you very well and you know Albus Dumbledore without knowing him (unless you're Harry). The average HP character would argue to the death that Dumbledore cares about people! without necessarily saying OR needing to believe that Dumbledore adored them, specifically. Albus knows how to connect to people and he uses that knowledge to appear approachable, trustworthy... when he needs to be approachable and trustworthy. Otherwise, he is holding people at arm's length so they do not hurt him.
I agree that Harry is very special. As much as Harry laments not knowing every detail about Dumbledore's early life, or why Dumbledore made the decisions he made re: the Deathly Hallows and Harry's life and upbringing, he is (and some readers are) also very blind to how close he is to his mentor despite all that.
If this is a racing track, nearly every other HP character is at the starting line, Dumbledore is at the finish line, Grindelwald might be a few inches away from him, and Harry is perhaps three strides behind Gellert with Snape breathing down his neck.
The two of them crack jokes with each other; they spend private time together without the awkward silences you get from lingering with a stranger; they trust each other deeply and speak very highly of one another. Harry got past defenses that Dumbledore had by that point spent a century building, without even trying.
I think Albus is one of very few intellectual characters who can make horrid decisions but is still very warm and kind instead of being the Cool Stoic Academic type through and through, and some people don't know how to reconcile that with the trope.
#fireandgoldposts#thanks for the ask!#not fireandgold#albus dumbledore#dumbledore meta#addendum: albus gets a lot of flack for doing or not doing things that other teachers get away with in other media lol#like ''he had a favorite student!'' and I'm like ''okay?? so did your real teachers? and it may not have been you?''#I was never the favorite so like... as long as my teachers didn't hate or sabotage me it was all good#I was not looking for surrogate parents with any of them *glances for a long time in Harry's direction*#in-universe Albus is also very well liked by many people of all ages#this in my mind supports the idea of him being the Cool Teacher that students could relate to without actually knowing shit about him lol#if he were outwardly cold or distant in a noticeable way then he'd be more like Snape or Phineas Nigellus Black.#instead they are like inverted mirrors for him imo

thinking about middle aged single dad Kiyoomi with fine silver streaks in his black curls and dark circles under his eyes and his shirt crumpled, dirty glasses pushed up into his hair as he rubs the bridge of his nose because his daughter ate glitter glue at 11pm and got a tummy ache now and he's tempted to just eat some glitter glue as well

you know someday i'm gonna feel so good when i have my student loans paid off
that ain't gonna be soon, trust me, but i think about it
#i've been saving so much for it that i paid off over like $2k in the last 2 or 3 months#it's just thinking about how the amount of interest goes off that drives me literally crazy#and my monthly amount i owe is like just under $120#which to some people as a regular bill is more manageable than others. but as i have an irregular income#as a substitute teacher it's something that gives me a LOT of stress.#which is another reason i've been overpaying. in case something happens/i can't get a lot of work#it defers the next due date.#that way it's not urgent but yet i still *feel* it all the time#debt is a crazy kind of thing#and to think that my loans are from COMMUNITY college. two years. publicly owned#when i start taking classes again soon. i currently have enough saved that if i take like ONE class#i can pay out of pocket. and i think im only gonna take one class to start anyway#which will also help with the deferred payments#see i just fucking hate having to think practically about money like this#tales from diana#idk how ppl leave high school and go straight to live in a dorm room at a private university for four straight years#and rack up tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt.#first of all that lifestyle was not accessible for me to begin with. even when paying it was such an abstract put-it-off thought#as it is for so many 18-year-olds who are told not to worry about where they apply.#but i had under $12k to repay when the student loan debt was unfrozen last fall#and it's been weighing on me soooo heavily since then. i think about it every damn day#it's like the money i make isn't even mine. it goes straight to mohela and food#keep in mind i also live w my parents & am on their health insurance so someday there'll be moooore bills!!!!

I’d like to think after Sydney left the asylum, Sirris reflexively hid most (if not all) photos with Sydney’s other parent in them. They keep one in their wallet, but the rest are boxed up and hidden far away
It’s also the same place where Sirris hides their old Temple robes but that’s a discussion for another post-

Had a talk with wife last night about the fact that neither of us really wants to be called "mom" in the future, and instead we wish for our kids to call us by our first names. I'm curious now:
#parenting#parenthood#for us it's mostly tied in the fact that we aren't really attached to the word mom/äiti#like I don't mind if my kids would call me their mom to their friends or teachers etc#but to my face I would much rather be called with my name or nickname#also because this is a two parent household of people who are both afab it's less confusing#and we couldn't be bothered to come up with different monikers for each of us#also because I am not cis so I don't strongly associate myself with the word äiti or the concept of “motherhood” explicitly#lgbtqia#queer
