I've had three major operations in my life. And a few minor ones.
I never really go into personal things here on tumblr but I'm making an exception.
1) abdominal surgery to fit a peritoneal dialysis tube when I was 17 in 2005 so I could do dialysis at hone when i was diagnosed with end stage renal failure.
2) Kidney transplant in 2006, donated by my brother to me. At the same time, they also removed the dialysis tube.
3) Removal of parathyroid glands in my neck, which if it had gone wrong, I could have lost my voice. Thankfully, it didn't!

Persephone’s thyroid tumor removal went well!! And doc actually was able to save her parathyroid, which is very exciting. He didn’t think he’d end up able to, which is why he had initially recommended a specialist. Because he was able to save her parathyroid we should be able to remove her other thyroid tumor eventually.

My pth and calcium are both on the high normal side.
That's
Not good.
Bad, even.
For those who haven't been following me long, PTH and calcium should always be opposite. If they're not, there's basically only one thing that causes that and its tumors called adenomas on the parathyroid glands. Like the 2 I got removed in 2021.
That could mean that my parathyroid surgery didn't remove all the adenomas or that more tumors have since grown. Which could require a second surgery. Which would be far more complicated, expensive, and possibly dangerous than the first and many surgeons straight up won't perform it. Not to mention I don't have the money for it.
I'm not going to catastrophize until I've talked to my surgeon about it. But it would explain why my symptom improvements platued then started to drift backwards.
Deeply worrying.

They called with Maeve’a blood test results. Her calcium was higher this time. So she is going back to the vet on the 23rd for an in-depth blood panel. To check her parathyroid and see if that is the cause, if it is she will probably need surgery to remove it. If not it means starting cancer testing with xrays, an ultrasound and possibly a bone marrow biopsy.
So you know I’m currently bawling my eyes out even thinking of any of that.
#really though I can’t stop crying thinking of anything being wrong with her#she’s only 4 years old I can’t even think of not having her in our lives for years to come

I try to be kind, but I wouldn't call myself smart.
-
Next doctor's appointment is next week and I don't wanna. I don't want to go and be told I have parathyroid cancer and then have chunks of my body removed.
Don't wanna.
I also don't like how all of the surgeries for that I've looked at try so hard to minimize scarring like, I'm not afraid of scars, I want the least resistance between the blade and the parts to be removed.
So one way they like to do it is to cut right where your neck meets your collarbone and then go up to the parathyroid, which puts the scar at that junction, minimizing it's appearance.
Another I saw was they go in THROUGH YOUR MOUTH between the jaw and skin, and go down to the parathyroid.
Just fucking cut right by it, ffs. Little scar, less disruption of tissues, no stretching of skin that doesn't need stretched. No furking problem.
I mean, I will talk to them about that. I can't imagine trying to minimize the scars makes the surgery easier OR safer.
If there's a medical reason for the incision to be at the base of the neck instead of partway up, that's one thing. I'll have to ask.
And if they want to do meds instead? I guess we could try that, but I still don't have insurance because of That Guy.

God, making posts like this is not easy. But here goes nothing.
First and foremost, thank you for taking the time to read this. Very recently, I was dealt two medical setbacks within the same week. Posting this is extremely difficult and violates every single safe feeling in my body when it comes to asking for help, but I’ve also reached an impasse where I don’t have any other choice but to reach out to my community and be vulnerable.
I am attempting to raise approximately $4,400 to address the following medical needs
1. Time sensitive dental care
To resolve advanced, time sensitive tooth decay, including fillings and crowns.
I am currently utilizing CareCredit to cover the upfront out-of-pocket costs of dental care.
I am resolving these issues to be eligible for surgery ASAP, per the advisement of my care team (see details below)
Estimated cost of this care is approx $2,200 post-deductible; I have paid for approx $1,500 of the treatments at this time via CareCredit (receipts posted below)
2. Parathyroidectomy (surgery)
I was recently diagnosed with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). First-line treatment for PHPT is surgical intervention (parathyroidectomy).
Estimated cost of this surgery is approx $2,200 post-deductible. These are based on estimates via UHC for the in-network team I’ve selected.
With PHPT, I experience chronic pain of the joints, muscles, and bones, as well as additional side effects such as extreme fatigue, brain fog, depression, anxiety, constipation, and nausea.
For those familiar with PHPT, I have PTH levels of 185pg/mL (normal 10-65pg/mL), calcium levels of 11mg/dL (normal 8.5-10.5 mg/dL), and a left adenoma roughly the size of a bean, per my 4DCT scans (for context, a normal parathyroid gland is no bigger than a grain of rice). I have likely had this adenoma for over 5 years and desperately need to remove it to vastly improve my life and tackle chronic pain and fatigue, for which I've been having weekly physical therapy to help mitigate.
I have likely had this adenoma for over 5 years and desperately need to remove it to vastly improve my life. Receiving first-line treatment is extremely necessary in ensuring I do not develop osteoporosis and/or kidney disease further down the line.
Unfortunately, I have increasing credit card debt, making the payments to CareCredit extremely challenging to manage due to the high interest rates I currently have on other cards. I have accrued these charges due to a combination of life hardships, prior medical debt (previous dental work), and the overall high cost of living.
My ultimate goal vis-a-vis this GoFundMe is to pay off my CareCredit card to fulfill these medical needs, then through NFCC (National Foundation for Credit Counseling) work with a counselor to (1) close my credit cards and (2) lower my interest rates. I cannot close my credit cards and begin to properly manage my debt until I have fulfilled the medical needs I have.
For additional context about me, as of right now I have a full-time job in operations. I am also neurodivergent (AuDHD) and have always struggled with financial literacy. In full transparency, I have made financial mistakes along the way that I cannot undo, mistakes which are all catching up to me at this point in time.
I find due to these mistakes and due to life hardships I have no control over, it is getting harder for me to keep up with the day-to-day costs of living, including buying essential groceries, paying rent, and paying my utilities. If I can tackle this medical debt, I truly believe I will get ahead of my other debt.
Thank you for reading this far. As I said, anything you can spare, even $5, is greatly appreciated and will extend a long way. Sharing this across your networks is also greatly appreciated and will help more than words can say. Thank you so so so much.

Bad News
I've been very low energy this past month, and have been experiencing extreme fatigue and a sore throat. Covid tests came up negative, so I decided to get my Doctor to run some blood tests.
A week goes by and she tells me my calcium levels were extremely high, and had me come back for more testing.
I got a call yesterday and she told me the bad news.
I likely have either parathyroid disease, or thyroid cancer according to her...and I'll likely need surgery to have the glands and/or tumors removed. She referred me to an endocrinologist, and now I'm just waiting to hear back from them.
Needless to say I'm not going to be up writing much for a while. Sorry to those who were following any stories I had going/ planned to write. I'll keep y'all posted.

Advanced Endocrine Surgery in Madurai: A Gateway to Precision and Health
Endocrine surgery has become a crucial specialty in modern healthcare, tackling a range of hormonal disorders that arise from glandular issues. As health technologies advance, the capabilities of endocrine surgery have transformed, offering patients minimally invasive solutions and more precise treatment methods. For residents of Madurai, Preethi Hospitals stands as a leading center for advanced endocrine surgery, providing expert care tailored to complex hormonal conditions. This blog explores the impact and benefits of advanced endocrine surgery and why it’s vital for effective treatment.
Understanding Endocrine Surgery and Its Purpose
The endocrine system regulates critical bodily functions, including metabolism, growth, and mood, through hormones secreted by various glands. Endocrine surgery primarily focuses on removing or treating abnormalities within these glands, such as the thyroid, adrenal glands, parathyroid glands, and pancreas. Advanced endocrine surgery employs cutting-edge techniques to address these glandular issues, offering greater precision, shorter recovery periods, and less post-operative discomfort for patients.
Common Conditions Treated Through Advanced Endocrine Surgery
Advanced endocrine surgery can treat several conditions, including:
Thyroid DisordersDisorders like thyroid nodules, hyperthyroidism, and thyroid cancer often require surgical intervention when other treatments prove ineffective. Advanced techniques allow surgeons to perform thyroidectomies with minimal incisions, promoting faster recovery and reduced scarring.
Adrenal TumorsThe adrenal glands play a significant role in managing stress, metabolism, and immune response. Abnormalities like adrenal tumors can disrupt these processes, sometimes necessitating surgical removal. Advanced endocrine surgery offers laparoscopic methods for adrenalectomy, allowing for minimally invasive tumor removal.
Parathyroid DiseaseHyperparathyroidism, caused by overactive parathyroid glands, can lead to conditions such as osteoporosis and kidney stones. Minimally invasive parathyroid surgery helps patients find relief from these symptoms with minimal discomfort.
Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumors (NETs)Pancreatic NETs can affect hormone levels and digestion. Advanced endocrine surgery enables surgeons to precisely target these tumors, preserving surrounding pancreatic tissue and ensuring a higher quality of life post-surgery.
How Advanced Techniques Elevate Surgical Success
Preethi Hospitals, Madurai, employs a range of advanced techniques to improve the safety, efficacy, and comfort of endocrine surgery. Some noteworthy methods include:
Minimally Invasive and Robotic-Assisted SurgeryMinimally invasive approaches, including robotic-assisted surgery, allow for enhanced precision with smaller incisions. This approach not only reduces scarring and pain but also shortens hospital stays, enabling a faster return to daily activities.
Intraoperative Neuromonitoring (IONM)During surgeries involving the thyroid and parathyroid glands, preserving nerve integrity is critical. Intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) helps monitor nerve activity during the operation, safeguarding against nerve damage and improving overall outcomes.
Targeted Imaging TechniquesAdvanced imaging techniques, such as ultrasound and CT scans, help locate abnormalities accurately before surgery. These images act as a map, allowing surgeons to precisely target problem areas without affecting surrounding tissues.
Rapid Intraoperative Pathology (Frozen Section)During endocrine surgeries, especially for tumors, rapid intraoperative pathology (also known as a frozen section) allows for real-time assessment of tissue samples. This immediate feedback helps confirm the extent of tumor removal, minimizing the chance of repeat surgery.

Reduced Pain and Faster Recovery: Minimally invasive techniques mean smaller incisions, which leads to reduced pain and quicker healing.
Enhanced Surgical Precision: With robotic assistance and advanced imaging, the precision of gland and tumor removal is significantly improved, reducing risks and recurrence rates.
Lower Risk of Complications: Advanced tools such as intraoperative neuromonitoring help minimize the risk of complications, particularly in surgeries involving delicate areas like the neck and abdomen.

T.S of Thyroid
Comprises of a framework of connective tissue, enclosing numerous rounded thyroid follicles or vesicles of different sizes.
Thyroid is richly supplies with blood vessels and nerves. It is innervated from the sympathetic nerves.
Thyroid secretes thyroxin, which contains an amino acid and 65% iodine.
Thyroxin controls the entire metabolism.
Deficiency of thyroxin causes lowered metabolism.
Hyperthyroxin results in the protrusion of eyeballs.
Removal of thyroid from frog stops metamorphosis.
Thyroid gland is controlled by THS - Thyroid Stimulating Hormone from pituitary.
---------------------------------------------------------
T.S. of Parathyroid Gland
Two parathyroid glands are always found embedded in the substance of thyroid or found on each side of the thyroid gland.
Each parathyroid is enclosed within a capsule.
Each parathyroid is a glandular organ consisting of columns of epithelial cells.
Parathyroid produces a hormone called parathormone, which is devoid of iodine.
Removal of parathyroid causes tetany or death.
Parathyroid gland develops an epithelial outgrowth from the third and fourth branchial clefts of the embryo.
------------------------------------------------------
T.S of Adrenal Gland
Adrenal glands lie at the anterior end of kidneys and are two in number.

Ground nest - Lapwings
Lapwings nest on the base ground in open waste lands with place encircled by pebbles.
The nests are a scrape in the ground lined with plant materials.
Usually the nests are in open areas, because the lapwing needs a good all-round view from the nest to spot predators.
Lapwing nests and eggs are camouflaged, they blend in with their surroundings by matching their backgrounds color and pattern.
-----------------------------------------------------
Walled nest - Common Swallow
Common swallows secrete a cement like substance by salivary gland.
They put this secretion on their feathers and make walled nests using cemented feathers.
Both male and female common swallows build the nest cup using mud.
The birds line the cup first with grass, then feathers, and if in colonies they may steal nest-lining materials from neighboring nests.
--------------------------------------------------
Walled nest - House martin
House martins secrete a cement like substance by salivary gland.
They put this secretion on their feathers and make walled nests using cemented feathers.
Traditionally, they would nest on cliff faces. However, now they are mostly associated with manmade structures
They build nests out of mud, gathering it up from ponds and streams
Nests are usually built on houses, hence the bird's name
----------------------------------------------
Floating nest - Coots
Coots make their nests floating on water.
The entire nest is generally a floating structure anchored to upright stalks.
The nest material is woven into a shallow basket with a hollowed interior lined with finer smooth material to hold the eggs
They build nests using reeds and grasses atop floating vegetation in shallow water.
----------------------------------------------------
Floating nest - Jacanas
Jacanas, an aquatic bird, make their nests on floating water
Male jacanas do most of the nest building
Floating plants are uses a base for the nest made of leaves and stems.
The male typically sits on the eggs in the nest too.
-------------------------------------------------------
Nest of Brood Parasitism
Some birds do not build their own nest.
They instead parasite in the nest of other birds.
Koel and Cuckoo for example, put their eggs in the nests of crow.
The host birds are then responsible for raising and feeding the parasite chick
The parasite bird and chick may kill the eggs or chicks of the host bird to reduce competition for resources.
-----------------------------------------
Communal nest - Mouk Parakeets
At least four pairs of the same species of mouk parakeets live together in the communal nest.
Female lay eggs but incubation of eggs and food for young is the duity of male.
Monk parakeets place their nests in deciduous and evergreen trees, palm trees
The bulky nests provide a year-round home for the colony and may be a reason why Monk Parakeets are able to survive cold winters.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Excavated hallow holes in trees - Wood Pecker
Some woodpeckers, such as this one, make a hollow nest in the trunk of a tree and use it as a nest
Both male and female woodpeckers build nest holes.
Most woodpecker species excavate a new nest cavity every year.
Woodpeckers are very important to ecosystems for their excavation activities, their abandoned nests provide homes to other animals.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground nest - penguin
Penguins can not fly and do not spend too much time in water, so they lay eggs and nest on ground.
Some penguins make scrape nests by making an indentation in the ground for their egg to sit and add vegetation around it for protection.
Other penguins use only rocks and pebbles to make a nest on flat ground
--------------------------------------
Ground nest - pheasant
Pheasants are arboreal birds that lay their eggs on lonely places of grounds.
The nests are usually surrounded by tall vegetation.
They are often in a natural depression or a hollow that the bird scoops out itself.
Female pheasants find or make the nest.
Females gather grasses, leaves, weed stalks, fine twigs, corn husks, and/or a few feathers from their own breast to line the nest
-----------------------------------------------
Social Insects - Honey Comb
Honey bees are social insects that build combs of wax.
They all live together in large, well-organized family groups
The comb stores honey and pollen, and is where larvae is grown.
The comb acts as a permanent colony for the species.
Female worker bees form the comb.
The honey bee hive consists of several hexagonal chambers or cells, such as
- Attachment cells: for attachment of the comb to any substratum.
- Storage cells: For storage of honey and pollen grains.
- Brood cells: For development of the young.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Social Insects - Honey Bee
Honey bees are social insects.
They all live together in large, well-organized family groups.
They have a highly organized division of labor
There are 3 castes of honey bees: queen, drone, and worker bees
Each caste has their own physical features and functions:
- Queen bee: The fertile female bee, she exists solely to lay eggs.
- Drone bees: All male bees are drones, they only exist to copulate with the female bee and fertilize her eggs.
- Worker bees: Sterile female bees. Smallest of the three. Most in number. Do all the work of the colony except laying eggs.
-----------------------------------------------------
Natural Hole & Cavities - Myna
Mynas nest in natural holes or cavities in trees.
The nest of myna are lined by twigs, roots, and rubbish.
Sometimes myna nest in manmade hollow structures such as pipes.
Mynas typically breed from August to March
Some mynas use the abandoned nests of woodpeckers.
-----------------------------------------------------
Excavated Hollow holes - Bee Eater
Bee eaters make hollow nests in the trunk of a tree and use it as a nest.
The tend to dig into vertical sandy banks or dirt to make nests.
They dig out an oval shaped chamber inside the mud to keep their eggs in.
Some bee-eaters nest in colonies.
---------------------------------------------
Natural Hole & Cavities - Kingfisher
Kingfishers nest in natural holes or cavities.
Some Kingfishers nest in tunnels dug into the natural or artificial banks in the ground.
Other kingfishers nest in arboreal termite nests.
The male and the female take turns digging the burrow, with males spending about twice as much time digging as females.
THIS ONE DOESN'T MAKE SENSE
--------------------------------------------------
Pendant or Suspended Nest - Sun Bird
Sun birds build pendant nests out of completely woven fibers.
The nests are often suspended from branches
The nest is tightly bound to the branch with spiders webs
The nests are usually lined with feathers
Only female sunbirds build nests
========================
Ground nest - Duck
Ducks nest on the ground in open waste lands with space encircled by pebbles.
They nest close to water.
The nests are generally concealed under overhanging grass or other vegetation
The female forms a shallow depression or bowl on the ground in moist earth
She pulls vegetation she can reach toward her while sitting on nest.
During egg-laying phase, she lines the nest with grasses, leaves, and twigs from nearby.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pendant or Suspended Nest - Tailor Bird
Tailor birds build pendant nests of completely woven fibers.
A tailor bird neatly stitches the edges of cleverly folded one or more large plant leaves with the threads of wool or cotton by means of its pointed beak.
The funnel shaped nest is ultimately linked by soft fibers, cotton wool, and vegatation so that the nest can become comfortable.

wow Persephone, you get TWO thyroid tumors? save some for the rest of us,,,,,,
(I hope her tumors are manageable/treatable! good luck to you and the little lady)
She is SO special. Also I am going to use your ask as an info dump. As always, I have no actual formal education. So this is what I know from my job / from talking to doc. So don’t take my word as law for any of this bc I may have gotten some things mixed up.
Surgery is an option actually, but only for one tumor. When he takes out the thyroid tumor he also ends up removing the parathyroid. She needs to keep at least one of those, which is why he can only remove one tumor. I also could probably find a specialist who could remove both tumors and leave both parathyroids intact
The tumors are usually begin, but we’d send it out just to make sure it really is. And before we do surgery we’ll want to do bloodwork as well as take chest radiographs and make sure she would A) survive surgery, and B) not be putting her through a surgery when she’s only got a month or two left to live.
#the ‘vet records’ that the shelter gave me aren’t actually vet records#they’re just vaccine records#so I’m HOPING I hear back from them and they send me some actual bloodwork results so I can compare where she’s at now VS when they did it#but also I have adopted from enough shelters to know that they often don’t want to give you real records for whatever reason#ask#Persephone

Who is a Head and Neck Surgeon?
A head and neck surgeon is a medical specialist with extensive training in diagnosing and treating conditions that affect the ears, nose, throat, thyroid, salivary glands, and other structures in the head and neck region. This field overlaps with otolaryngology (ENT), but head and neck surgeons often focus on more complex issues, including tumors, cancers, and reconstructive surgeries.
These surgeons are experts in handling delicate surgeries involving the voice box, sinuses, skull base, and lymph nodes, along with cosmetic and reconstructive procedures aimed at restoring function and appearance after trauma or cancer treatment.
Common Conditions Treated by a Head and Neck Surgeon
Head and neck surgeons treat a wide range of conditions, including:
Thyroid and Parathyroid Disorders: Thyroid nodules, goiters, and cancers often require surgical intervention. A head and neck surgeon performs delicate thyroidectomies and other related procedures.
Salivary Gland Tumors: Tumors in the salivary glands can be benign or malignant. Surgery is often necessary to remove these tumors while preserving nerve function.
Head and Neck Cancers: These include cancers of the throat, larynx (voice box), mouth, and nasal passages. A head and neck surgeon may perform procedures like laryngectomies or complex tumor resections to remove cancerous growths.
Sinus and Nasal Cavity Disorders: Conditions like chronic sinusitis or polyps that don’t respond to medical treatment may require surgery. Surgeons can perform minimally invasive procedures to restore proper sinus function.
Throat and Voice Disorders: Head and neck surgeons treat conditions that affect the vocal cords, such as vocal nodules, polyps, and cancers, often restoring the patient’s ability to speak and swallow.
Trauma and Reconstructive Surgery: Trauma to the face and neck, such as fractures or soft tissue injuries, may require reconstructive surgery to restore both function and aesthetics. Surgeons also work on reconstructing areas after cancer removal.

Top Parathyroid Adenomas Services in Jayanagar — Dr. Anil Kamath
Understanding Parathyroid Adenomas
Parathyroid adenomas are non-cancerous growths on one or more of the parathyroid glands, which are located in the neck behind the thyroid. These glands produce parathyroid hormone (PTH), which helps regulate calcium levels in the blood. When a parathyroid adenoma is present, it can cause the affected gland to produce excessive PTH, leading to hyperparathyroidism. This condition can result in elevated calcium levels (hypercalcemia) and a range of symptoms, including:
Bone Pain and Weakness: High calcium levels can lead to bone resorption, causing pain and increasing the risk of fractures.
Kidney Stones: Excess calcium in the blood can lead to the formation of kidney stones.
Digestive Issues: Symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain can occur.
Fatigue and Weakness: General feelings of tiredness and muscle weakness are common.
Cognitive Changes: Hypercalcemia can affect mental clarity, leading to confusion and memory issues.
Importance of Timely Treatment
Left untreated, parathyroid adenomas and the resulting hyperparathyroidism can lead to severe complications, including osteoporosis, kidney damage, and cardiovascular issues. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are crucial to prevent these outcomes and restore normal calcium levels in the body.
