If you cannot get rid of Dutch, then you are obliged to feel at home in it as much as possible. You must know the language so well that you can be an Antillean in it. While Dutch in the Antilles is constantly influencing Papiamentu, I turn this one-way traffic around in my work. I Antilleanize Dutch.
More Read Caribbean recommendations here by Amara Amaryah. Especially enjoyed learning about the role of creole languages in Caribbean literature like Belizean kreyol and Papiamentu in Curaçao. This quote by Martinus Arion especially really spoke to me.

how many languages do you speak? :o
That's a very cruel question to ask a multilingual person, I have never spoken a language in my life
#okay to reblog#for my fellow multilinguals <3#I'm from the Netherlands and Dutch is my mother tongue#I'm close to fluent in English#my French is an embarrassment. meaning I can understand enough to get by and to correct google translate but can hardly speak it#my German is appalling. meaning I can read it okay because it is similar to Dutch but cannot understand it when spoken nor speak it#and I /wish/ I spoke papiamentu but I never learned more than a few words#beneath-thestyx#for the record I don't mind the question at all ^^ (but I /am/ deeply embarrassed about my french)

What Are The Native Languages of TWST Characters? (PT. 1)
Note these are all in my opinion, in no way are these all canon things! Part One - Part Two - Part Three Heartslabyl, Savanaclaw, and Octavinelle characters are all featured down below. While in part two there is Scarabia, Pomefiore, and Ignihyde. And finally in part three you can find Diasomnia and the Night Raven College Staff Members, with Grim and My AU! MC
Heartslabyul
Due to the linkage between the story of Alice in Wonderland being set in Victorian England, these characters all have a certain form of the language that they natively speak or can speak.
Riddle Rosehearts - British English ; Medium Accent Trey Clover - British English ; Light Accent Cater Diamond - American English ; Heavy Accent Deuce Spade - American English ; Heavy Accent Ace Trappola - British and American English ; Medium Accent
Savanaclaw
As being set inside of Africa, mainly places such as Kenya, this dorm's trio of characters all mainly have a linkage to said African languages. That is besides Jack Howl, who lives in a more winter terrain. So, I'll link him to somewhere such as Norway.
Leona Kingscholar - Swahili and Zulu ; Medium Accent Ruggie Bucchi - Swahili and Zulu ; Light Accent Jack Howl - Sami and Norwegian ; Medium-Heavy Accent
Octavinelle
As the remake of the movie The Little Mermaid is set in the Caribbean Sea, I shall use the languages used mainly in that area as a reference to what their native languages are.
Azul Ashengrotto - Papiamentu and Spanish ; Light Accent Jade Leech - Papiamentu and Dutch ; Light Accent Floyd Leech - Papiamentu and Dutch ; Medium Accent

❝ poltergeist report: * ― 𝑪𝑶𝑳𝑶𝑼𝑹𝑭𝑼𝑳 𝑰𝑵𝑻𝑬𝑹𝑽𝑰𝑬𝑾. | client: @bravesung | 𝙼𝙸𝚂𝚂𝙸𝙾𝙽: [ ruby ] give one random fun fact about yourself. [ tangerine ] do you speak other languages? if yes, which? [ amber ] which is your favorite season? why? | 𝙰𝙲𝙲𝙴𝙿𝚃𝙸𝙽𝙶.
[ ruby ] give one random fun fact about yourself.
I'll admit that this was a tough one cause I'm NOT sure if I already told y'all about this but if there's ONE fun random fact about me is that I can actually wiggly both my ears. IF that's doesn't count and y'all already know about it then another thing I can say is that I'm flexible for a person that doesn't train to be flexible. I'm not sayin' you finna see me do some inosuke shit but like I can pretty much maneuver in ways that'd make the average person go 'wtf'.
[ tangerine ] do you speak other languages? if yes, which?
Yes I can actually, back in my day (LORD giving out my age) the curriculum will pretty much have you learn THREE LANGUAGES. Those languages were Dutch, English and Spanish. My native tongue is called Papiamentu so that's my fourth language. Now if I'm really with you whilst I can understand spanish enough to get me through mexico from point a to b, I'm not fluent in it to actually hold a conversation that'd last ten minutes. Other languages I've gotten in my culinary path are French and Latin but I've fell off the wagon concerning both. Dutch and Spanish i picked up pretty good but English had been a struggle, notably the GRAMMAR as most of y'all have probably already noticed.
[ amber ] which is your favorite season? why?
Winter, and yo boy will give you the reasons why. FIRST OFF the place is TOO hot for snow soo I can safely say Jack Frost keeps his pale little ass away from my home but what we do get is tons of rain and lots of wind and it's the ONE time the island is SOO DAMN wonderful through this damn global warming. Growing up I'd actually say fall was my favorite time cause that's when it's an equal feel of a little bit of warmth with the coming cool air of the inevitable winter. THESE days it's like we skip that shit, just Summer then Winter.

I am so gratefull for my mother. Through her i feel the connection with my ancestors. From a young age she has made me aware and assured me of my identity, whom i am and where i come from. And i must never forget it. She used to tell me you are my child and you come from this culture therefor you will always carry it with you. And i think that is the reason why i am so pro black and aware of the place & privileges i have in this world. And why i feel the connection with my culture. She navigated me through it in the most beautifull way.
Seeing her deepening her connection with her culture by dance, music, traditional food and speaking her language papiamentu freely after years of trying to suppres herself has made me realise that you are always connected. Even if it is only in spirit. And that there is no shame in losing sight of the things you love as long as you find your way back to it.
#when i look in the mirror i see my mothers & grandmothers face and features#and i realise i come from a beautifull line of black woman that raised me#With what my mom thaught me i realise my privilge and try to do right by black woman especially my dark skin sisters

unprompted / always accepting / @slayingblades 🌸 If you get this, answer with 3 random facts about yourself and send it to the last 7 blogs in your notifications, anonymously or not! Let's get to know the person behind the blog. 🌸
This is tricky. Let's see.
Fact 1: I speak about three languages fluently, that being. Papiamentu (a language native to my side of the caribbean. It's kinda like if ALL the languages had a baby it would be that, main contenders in the language are spanish in dutch since we have words like 'señor' which means sir and then 'mag' which is like saying 'allowed'.), Dutch and English.
I do understand spanish and can speak enough of it for me to survive in another country but to say I can speak it fluently..nah that'd be a lie.
I also do understand bits of French and Italian, my pronunciation is above average but to speak it?? No sir I'm sorry.
NOTE: I put English on the fluent side because I've gotten so much better at it over the course of these last years. Though admittingly I can still use a lot of brushing up as my grammar isn't always tat great and sometimes it's just downright 'naw man'.
Fact 2: I might have an unhealthy obsession with Superho Spider-man. Ah man I would love to fib y'all and say my childhood was a cool kid's one but nah been bullied soo much, kindergarten , middle school. It's like life just love taking a shit on me growing up. Then i picked up one of those comics from our local library (when the island was cool). And man, Peter had it rough too. Not as bad as me but you know how it is when you're like 11 or 12 and you read about someone so relatable that you just begin get a little more confidence in yourself when they overcome their shit.
Fact 3: Not as deep as the first two but I can actually wiggle my ears, YUP that's right you heard me, BOTH of 'em. Not to an Alfalfa degree (old people holla at me) but just enough that you can see 'em wiggle wiggle.
#❛ mail ━━ i've been fighting but i just can't do enough.#did this so y'all can get a little glance in what makes jay#jay#XD
