The Public (East) When AGO - Art Gallery of Ontario curator, Jashoba Jordan invited me to participate in The Public (East) an offsite extension of "Every. Now. Then: Reframing Nationhood" I was excited to receive this opportunity to take my practice "back to where I came from." I first arrived in Canada twelve years ago and Scarborough was home for a full four years while I pursued my undergraduate studies at UTSC. (University of Toronto, Scarborough) Scarborough played a monumental role in shaping my art practice. My journey with Performance Art began in classes with one of Canada's leading artists and Governor General's Award winners, Tanya Mars. Once exposed to the performance works of Marina Abramovic, Chris Burden, Vito Acconci, Yoko Ono, Bruce Nauman and others, there was no turning back for me. My first performance was a live prayer piece in 2004. I put on a pair of jeans, veiled my hair, strapped a gothic belt around my waist and put on my favourite tee. The azaan (call to prayer) echoed through the university halls. Incense was lit in a corner. I remained in sajdah (prostration) for twenty minutes. Divided between multiple worlds and ideologies, I began to examine the "double consciousness" coined by Du Bois in the 1903 publication, "The Souls of Black Folk." Double consciousness describes the individual sensation of feeling as though your identity is divided into parts, making it difficult to have one unified identity. I also look back and realize now that the veil has consistently made an appearance in my practice, in one form or another. I marked Scarborough roads and trails with milk, ubtan (turmeric) and rose water for performances. I wrote my mother's poetry all over a snowy road near Morningside and Ellesmere, right before a truck drove through the piece, erasing the ink away into the snow. I covered myself from head to toe in ubtan (turmeric) surrounded by newspapers promoting skin whitening products. I ate rope from Pakistan with my arms tied to my body with Canadian tape. Rituals and objects from my home country began to hybridize with rituals and objects in my adopted country. Scarborough allowed me to experiment, to fail, to fall and to grow. I look forward to taking my performative practice back to Scarborough after all these years. This will be my second time exhibiting with the AGO and Y+contemporary. Please join us this Saturday at Y+ contemporary from 5-8 PM for performances by: Abedar Kamgari, Mariam Magsi, Jo SiMalaya Alcampo, Paul Ohm Shanti Ohonsi, Esmaa Mohamoud and Qendrim Hoti. *** Organized by co-curator Anique Jordan, The Public extends the content of the AGO’s current exhibition, Every.Now.Then: Reframing Nationhood back into the community. The Public uses performance, video installation and discussion to explore prominent exhibition themes of land and body working across two community sites, Black Creek Community Farm and the newest and only artist run center in Scarborough, Y+ Contemporary.

The OCAD show also includes multimedia exhibits such as the imagery by grad student Mariam Magsi that focuses on women in burkas, the full-cover veil worn by some Muslim women.
Purdah gets featured in The Toronto Star by immigration reporter, Nicholas Keung-:
“Magsi, who grew up in Pakistan with a mother who loved photography, said she was fascinated by women wearing the burqa.
“I love travel photography. The scene that I couldn’t get out of mind was a family of women in burqas walking on an unpaved road, carrying grocery bags in hand. What drew me to them was the rhinestones on their shoes and embroideries on their burkas. That’s the way they expressed themselves,” she recalled.
“Here in Canada, we have so much hatred against the people who wear identity markers like burqas and hijabs.”
During her research, not only did Magsi discover from her family that her own maternal great grandmother was a burqa-wearing matriarch, but she travelled to Pakistan, Morocco, Dubai and across Canada to photograph and interview women in burkas.
The result was her photography collection called “Purdah,” which means “to veil, to wear enveloping clothing” in Persian and Urdu.
“Photography has the power for social change and it can shift perceptions,” said the Karachi native, 31, adding that she hopes the storytelling and images can inspire viewers to question their own assumptions and biases against women in burqas.”

Thanks to YTB Gallery curators, Geneviève Wallen and Marsiya Maharani, for stopping by the studio for intellectually riveting conversations and brainstorming sessions. Check out the curators encountering "The Registry" (first image) an interactive installation that can be experienced at the "Making Peace" exhibition (Canary District). Stay tuned for upcoming summer projects!

"The Registry" an interactive installation from the Purdah thesis exhibition at OCAD University has been selected for exhibition at "Making Peace" curated by Ashley Woods, former curator of Magnum Photos and current curator at the Nobel Peace Prize Museum in Stockholm. I am deeply honoured to have been selected for this exhibition. I hope you will join us at the opening celebration and ribbon cutting ceremony on May 13th, 2pm, Front St. E, Canary District, Corktown. "Making Peace is a major public event that aims to teach the public, especially young people what key elements are necessary to create a 'sustainable peace'; providing an opportunity for people of all ages to get involved in bringing about positive change. Activities include a large photographic exhibition that pays tribute to the people who — all over the planet — devote their time, energy and resources to the cause of peace."
