He never asked me to but it made things a bit easier. Over the course of the first 5 years I slowly started changing my lifestyle and beliefs. Then in 2015, when pregnant with my daughter, I became a practising Muslim. I realised that I was about to become a role model to a female and thought about how I wanted her to grow up. I realised I needed to emulate that. I didnt want our children to see any differences between their parents and wanted to ensure they became practising Muslims too. I had already started following islam privately and I started wearing the hijab the day after she was born. Being Muslim now completely defines me and I believe this is the path I was meant to take. It wasn't easy but I know it will be worth it. My children know I choose to become Muslim and we practice our religion together. Happiness; a thing we all strive for but can't seem to attain...

“In Hadith Qudsi, Allah says, “If you take 1 step towards me, I will take 10 towards you. And if you come to me walking, I’ll come to you at speed.” That is all it takes. 1 step.

I took so many steps back away from Allah. I was lost. An 8 year old begging my parents to not take me to Arabic school because “I would never use this stuff in real life”, I could never have been so wrong. Growing up, I was bullied, had no social life, was not close to my family, overweight and spent my childhood and teenage years like a turtle in my room with just my video games and me. From 16 to 21, I became social. I lost weight, had friends, and working hard to earn money. I seemed happy, but inside, I was dying. Something was missing.

By 21, I lost everything. My relationship with my parents was daily arguments, leaving my mother in tears, wondering what is wrong with her son. After financial hardship, failing classes, losing my job, broken heart from a girlfriend, overweight, death of two family members. Where was my solution?

I contemplated suicide for weeks. Crying in my room late one night, my heart, mind, soul rested as I heard my father give the call to prayer, “hiya alsalah, hiya alfalah”, “Come to prayer, come to success”.

I took my first step. For the first time in my life, I acknowledged Allah as my source of guidance. When I was at my lowest, I looked to the Highest for assistance. I raised my hands, breath taken away from the exhaustion of crying, tears rushing down my face, asking Allah to guide me. I came to Allah walking. He came to me at speed.

Slowly, my problems became memories tattooed to my heart to remind me to never take a step back from Allah, ever. My problems meant nothing to me because I knew; Allah tests those that He loves. That “verily, with hardship there is ease”. That everything in this Dunya is a test from Allah.

For anyone that is far from Allah, having taken so many steps back, it takes one step towards Allah to come back. But you must take that first step.

Take that first step.
