Paring: S.B x Hufflepuff! Reader Tags: fluff / heart ache / miscommunication / yearning Summary: Sirius becomes increasingly distracted by his growing feelings for Y/N, leaving anonymous notes and drawing her picture in Herbology class, while struggling to focus on his work. Meanwhile, Y/N starts to notice his attention, feeling torn between her growing affection for him and her reluctance to believe he sees her as more than just another passing interest W/C: 3.1k A/N: anyone else blushing? no.. okay just me [masterlist] Much love, Saige
The morning air was crisp as you entered the Great Hall, the usual hum of conversation surrounding you as students filtered in for breakfast.
The long tables were already filled, and the chatter of your fellow students blended with the clinking of silverware. You made your way to the Hufflepuff table, exchanging nods with a few friends as you slid into your seat, relaxing as you found comfort in the routine of it all.
But your mind wasn’t entirely on the food in front of you.
Your eyes kept drifting across the hall, drawn inexplicably to the Gryffindor table. Sirius Black sat at the far end, a quill in his hand, scribbling furiously on a piece of parchment. His head was down, a lock of his dark hair falling across his brow as he concentrated on whatever he was writing. The sight of him felt oddly familiar now, almost comforting in a way, But what caught you off guard was the strange sense that this time, it wasn’t a note you would find later. This was a real, unspoken interaction.
Your gaze lingered on him for a moment longer than you intended.
And in that moment, your eyes met his.
It was brief—just a flicker, like a spark that caught the corner of your vision—but it was enough. Your breath caught; your heart skipped a beat. For an instant, you saw the corners of his lips twitch, as if he’d been waiting for you to look at him.
His usual carefree, cocky expression softened for a fraction of a second before he quickly glanced back down at his parchment, his quill continuing to move rapidly across the page.
You felt a sudden warmth creep up your neck, and you quickly looked away, pretending to focus on your plate. But your mind was racing.
Had he been watching you the entire time? Or was that just a fleeting moment. Just one of those instances where you convince yourself things are happening that might not be.
You tried to calm your nerves, pushing your fork through your eggs, but you couldn’t ignore the little flutter of excitement in your chest. You’d gotten so used to the secret exchanges through the notes, but this—this was real.
He had seen you. He noticed you.
You couldn’t help but wonder what he had been writing just then. Was it another note? Or something entirely different?
Your curiosity gnawed at you, but you didn’t want to be obvious about it. He was Sirius Black, after all. The boy who could have any girl at Hogwarts and did it easily. The boy who had a way of making everyone feel like they were the center of his attention, only for it to disappear the moment he moved on to the next one.
You weren’t going to be another one of those girls, it was easier to protect yourself from the heartbreak.
As you tried to push the thoughts aside, you stole another glance in his direction. This time, he was still writing, his brow furrowed as he focused on the parchment. You couldn’t make out what he was writing, but you saw how his hand moved with a kind of determination, his fingers curling around the quill, a small crease between his eyes as he took breaks, examining his work.
Was he writing for you? Did he even realize you were watching him? The thoughts raptured your attention, unable to stop the questions and queries from popping up.
Sirius had always been a mystery to you. The confident, charming Gryffindor with a knack for pulling everyone into his orbit. But the notes… the notes had changed everything. They were different, more genuine than anything he had ever shown in person. You didn’t know how, but you had begun to see a side of him that no one else got to see. A side of him that was thoughtful and almost… soft.
Your heart skipped again as you realized that, without meaning to, you had begun to look forward to the little exchanges. They were becoming more important to you than you’d care to admit. You hadn’t expected to care so much, but there it was. Every note, every word written felt like an invitation into something deeper.
And now, you were sitting across from him in the Great Hall, the tension of that brief moment of eye contact still hanging in the air. You didn’t know how you’d gotten here, but you could feel the subtle pull between you, the way the notes had started to bridge the distance.
As the chatter around you grew louder, you tried to push the thoughts away, focusing instead on the conversation with your friends, the food, the normal, everyday things. But no matter how much you tried to focus, your eyes kept drifting back to the Gryffindor table. And each time, you found Sirius with his head down, writing.
But this time, you couldn’t help yourself.
You felt the soft heat of a smile tug at your lips. Slowly, so subtly it would be hard for anyone to notice, you tucked a strand of hair behind your ear and looked up just enough to meet his eyes again.
This time, you didn’t look away immediately.
His gaze flickered toward you, just for a moment, before he seemed to compose himself, clearing his throat and looking down at his work again. You were sure your heart was hammering now, but you couldn’t help but wonder… was that a smile, or had you imagined it?
Either way, the moment lingered. And for the first time since the notes had started, you realized you wanted more than the anonymous words on paper. You wanted to hear his voice, to see if he could be as real with you in person as he had been in his notes.
But for now, all you had was the brief connection—the brief, lingering look across the table.
And that was enough for today.
—————
Sirius had been so absorbed in his work that he barely noticed James approaching him until the loud scrape of a chair pulled him from his focus. He looked up, surprised, his quill still hovering over the parchment, the ink smearing lightly as James bumped the table lightly into his wrist.
James grinned, flopping into the seat across from him without ceremony. “I see you’ve been busy, mate. What’s that you’re working on?”
Sirius blinked and quickly dropped his quill, trying to cover the page.
But it was too late.
James leaned in, his eyes narrowing with curiosity as he caught sight of the unfinished sketch. A gentle sigh of realization escaped him. “Hold on… Is that…?”
Sirius groaned, dragging a hand down his face in embarrassment. “Don’t—”
But James was already grinning widely, unable to suppress his amusement. “No way. You’re drawing a girl, aren’t you?”
Sirius’ heart skipped, and he straightened up defensively. “It’s not what you think, Prongs. I wasn’t drawing her—just… sketching. It’s a random thing. Nothing to it.”
James raised an eyebrow, clearly not convinced. “Right, because every sketch you do is a random, unplanned masterpiece of a girl you’ve barely spoken to. Come on, mate, you’ve got it bad, don’t you?”
Sirius rubbed his neck awkwardly, his usual confidence faltering for a moment. “I’m not sure what you mean,” he muttered, trying to act casual. He glanced at the unfinished picture, but his gaze immediately flickered back to his parchment, half afraid James would pick up on how much thought had gone into it. How much care. The way he had drawn her smile, the curve of her cheek, the way her hair fell just right—details that only came from paying far too much attention.
James, of course, wasn’t fooled for a second. He leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a teasing whisper. “Sirius, mate, come on. I’ve known you long enough to see when you’re really into someone. Is it her? Y/N?”
Sirius felt his face heat up, and he quickly snapped the parchment in half, crumpling it up and throwing it into his bag. “I told you, it’s nothing. It’s just a drawing.”
James didn’t back down. He sat back in his chair, arms folded, watching Sirius closely. “Alright, if you say so. But you know, it’s pretty clear you’ve been leaving her a lot of notes too, right?”
Sirius froze, his eyes darting to James’ knowing grin. “You’ve noticed ?” he asked, his voice quieter than usual. He hadn’t expected James to catch on to something so subtle. But then again, James was always perceptive, always able to spot the smallest shift in someone’s behavior.
“Well, yeah,” James replied, his grin turning into something a little more thoughtful. “You’ve been sneaking them into her books, right? Little messages here and there… you’re not exactly subtle, Padfoot. You write them in your bed, both you and i know you don't do homework in bed”
Sirius’ stomach twisted uncomfortably. He hadn’t realized just how obvious it had become. He wasn’t trying to hide it, exactly—he just hadn’t thought James would pick up on it. After all, it wasn’t like he was trying to make a big deal out of it.
“You think she knows it’s me?” Sirius asked, his voice tinged with uncertainty. The idea of you figuring it out made him feel… vulnerable. More vulnerable than he’d ever been with anyone.
James raised an eyebrow, giving him a sly look. “I’m not sure. But I think she’s noticed something. I mean, who else would take the time to write such… detailed notes? Not many people are paying that much attention to her. And I’ve seen the way she reacts when she finds one of them in the library. It’s like… she’s trying to be all calm about it, but there’s something else there. She’s definitely interested, mate.”
Sirius couldn’t help the small rush of hope that fluttered inside him at James’ words. But then doubt crept in again. “She’s probably just humoring me. She’s probably not even interested, honestly. I’ve seen the way she looks at me in the hallways. She’s always so poignant, like she’s waiting for me to pull some grand trick or something.”
James shook his head, his usual teasing tone replaced with something softer. “Sirius, you’re overthinking it. Y/N isn’t like the other girls, she’s not going to fall for that crap. But I think she sees you. Not the Sirius everyone else sees, but the real you. The guy who’s thoughtful, who has more depth than anyone gives him credit for. She’s probably just scared of getting too close—doesn’t want to be another one of your little quips.”
Sirius paused, letting the words sink in. It wasn’t often James spoke to him with that much sincerity. He was always the jokester, the one who could turn any serious conversation into something ridiculous. But there was truth in what he said. Maybe he hadn’t given you enough credit. Maybe all the jokes and games he had played had clouded his judgment.
He let out a breath, glancing at the parchment again—now hidden in his bag—where the image of you lingered, unfinished, like something he was too scared to fully draw. He wasn’t used to feeling this way. He didn’t know how to navigate something so… real.
“I don’t know, James,” he muttered, staring down at the table. “What if I mess it all up? What if she doesn’t want me like that? I’ve been really good at pushing people away just as it gets real..., you know? And I don’t want to hurt her.”
James leaned forward, giving Sirius a reassuring look. “The fact that you’re worried about it shows you’re not the same guy who used to run around breaking hearts. That’s progress, mate.”
Sirius managed a small, rueful smile. Maybe James was right. Maybe he was changing.
Just then, he glanced back up and saw you walking around the Great Hall again, your head slightly bowed as you made your way away from the Hufflepuff table.
You didn’t look at him, but he could still see the way your hair glinted in the morning light, the soft curve of your profile that had somehow worked its way into the sketch he’d had done.
He had to do something. He couldn’t keep hiding behind notes and sketches forever. But for now, all he could do was watch you, hoping that one day, when he finally worked up the courage, you’d see him the way he was starting to see you.
—————
It was a cloudy Wednesday afternoon when the combined Hufflepuff and Gryffindor Herbology class gathered outside for their lesson. You could already feel the cool air biting at your skin, but the greenhouse was warm and full of the earthy scent of fresh soil and growing plants. The bright green leaves of the various magical plants around you were comforting, a welcome contrast to the overcast sky. Still, your thoughts weren’t entirely on the lesson.
As you entered the greenhouse, you took your usual place near the back of the class, avoiding the front rows where Professor Sprout usually had everyone work. You weren’t in the mood for close attention today, especially with all the tension that had been building up between you and Sirius.
When the pairings were announced, you weren’t surprised to hear that you were paired with James Potter. It wasn’t a bad thing—James was a good student and an even better classmate—but it meant you would be working right next to Sirius, who was seated across the table from you, paired up with Lily Evans.
Lily didn’t seem to mind it at all. She was talking with Sirius as if nothing was wrong, but you could see the way his gaze flickered nervously toward your table from time to time, almost as if he was fighting the urge to look at you directly. You told yourself you weren’t going to be distracted by him—not today, not when you were already feeling conflicted about his notes and the sudden disappearance of them all together.
You mind was reminded of the last note, tucked safely in your bag just to your left. But was haunted you was that it was given last week... the break of communication made you worried he was over the entire ordeal all together.
James, ever the chatterbox, turned to you with his usual grin, breaking you from your train of thought. “Alright, Y/N. Let’s make this work. I think we can make this a smooth session today, no problem.”
You couldn’t help but smile at him, appreciating his easygoing nature. “Sounds good,” you said, focusing on the task in front of you.
The plant in front of you looked like something between a fern and a cactus—its sharp spines growing out of thick, succulent leaves. You pulled out your gloves, ready to get to work.
James was already talking about something unrelated, but your attention wasn’t entirely on him. Every so often, your gaze would drift across the table, to Sirius, who was trying to focus on the plant in front of him. You could tell he was having trouble. His usual confident posture was a little more slumped today, his fingers twisting a pair of gardening shears in a way that seemed entirely too distracted. Lily was explaining something about the plant’s properties to him, her voice low and calm, but he wasn’t listening. He was too busy shifting his weight from one leg to the other, his eyes flicking over to your table with a nervous intensity.
You couldn’t help but feel a small tug of sympathy for him. Sirius never seemed to be the type who had trouble focusing. It was always like everything around him fell into place with ease. But today… today, he was out of sorts.
You had caught him looking at you in the Great Hall that morning. He had tried to hide it, but you had seen it in his eyes. The hesitation. The way his gaze lingered for just a moment too long. You couldn’t quite put your finger on what had changed, but something was different. And it made you feel… uncertain.
As you tried to concentrate on the plant in front of you, you felt a familiar warmth on your skin. You glanced up and found Sirius staring at you. This time, he didn’t even try to look away quickly. He just looked at you, his dark eyes searching yours, almost like he was trying to find the right words to say. Or maybe he was waiting for you to say something first.
But you didn’t. Instead, you focused on the task in front of you, turning your attention to the plant again.
“Y/N?” James’s voice broke through the silence, and you turned your head to see him looking at you with a raised brow. “Are you with me?”
You blinked, suddenly realizing that you had been staring into space. “Sorry, James. I was just thinking.”
“About someone?” he asked, his voice teasing but gentle.
You froze, your eyes widening. How did he know? You quickly masked your shock with a nervous laugh. “No, of course not! Just… thinking about the plant.”
James just gave you a knowing look, his grin widening. “Right, just the plant.” He clearly wasn’t buying it, but he didn’t press the matter any further, thankfully.
You couldn’t help but feel your face flush under his scrutiny. You were being too obvious, weren’t you?
Meanwhile, across the table, Sirius was still struggling to keep his focus. His hand kept twitching, like he was about to pick up a tool and then set it down again, distracted by something invisible. Finally, after a long moment of this, Lily looked at him with a furrowed brow. “Sirius, what is it? You’ve been spacing out this whole class.”
Sirius didn’t answer immediately. He didn’t even look at her, his eyes still avoiding hers, as though he was too embarrassed to admit it. “Nothing,” he muttered, his voice tight. “Just… not feeling it today.”
Lily didn’t seem convinced. “Well, something is distracting you, Sirius. Are you sure everything’s alright?”
But Sirius just shook his head, looking down at the plant again. “I’m fine, really.”
Your heart tugged a little at the sight of him so out of sorts. You wanted to help, to say something, but what could you say? You didn’t want to make things worse by acknowledging the tension between you two.
You had no idea that Sirius was trying to sort through the confusion in his own mind, his emotions fighting against each other like a storm. He had been staring at you in the Great Hall that morning, hoping to make some kind of connection, but your avoidance had made him retreat back into himself. He had tried to focus on his work, on the lesson, on anything to keep his mind from wandering back to you. But it wasn’t working.
It had been weeks since he’d started leaving you the notes, and though they had brought a certain excitement, they had also introduced a feeling he didn’t quite know how to handle: uncertainty. What was he doing? What was he hoping for?
Sirius let out a quiet sigh, his thoughts swirling like the vines and leaves around him. And despite his attempts to refocus, he couldn’t stop looking at you.
And you? You couldn’t stop wondering what he was thinking.
Neither of you knew yet, but this was the moment when something in both of you shifted, unnoticed by the rest of the class.

What kind of dog breed do you think Padfoot was ? I seen people say greyhound but I don’t see it, don’t think it’s powerful enough to go against a werewolf
Oh ! I think Padfoot would be closest to the Irish Wolfhound. Their shaggy/wiry coat reflects exactly what I imagine for him. These dogs did a bit of wolf hunting back in the day, but now they are pretty chill. I’m also pleased with the idea that Wolfhounds are courageous and loyal.
& here they are !

love that hc where james doesn’t really like being called “jamie” but goes absolute stupid when regulus calls him that. i mean, in general, he’s all so grumpy and frustrated that no one bothers to just add a fucking s to “james”, but whenever reg says it so casually like “thank you for the tea, jamie” or “no, i’m not busy, jamie” or “that’s alright, jamie” his mind just goes lalala i’m so in love hihi

The Marauders in an argument about which one of them is the most badass so Remus goes:
"I'm a FUCKING WEREWOLF."
Which would have been a trump card if it weren’t for Sirius immediately mouthing off with:
"And I'm fucking a werewolf, your point?"
And that's how James and Peter find out they're together.

Lovesick James who almost trips over himself when he sees you in the hallway. He's just so awestruck by you, he can't think straight. And apparently that means he can't walk straight either. He's walked into sirius so many times, he's gonna kill James if there's a bruise on his shoulder. Merlin forbid he spots you in the crowd at a quidditch match.
Lovesick James who isn't much of a reader but makes it his mission to read all your favourite romance books to he can recreate moments with you. Be it kissing in the rain or comforting one another from a nightmare, he wants the full sappy experience.
Lovesick James who refers to you in almost every letter he sends his mum or dad. Poor Euphemia and Fleamont know too much about you given that you're someone they've never even met - James hasn't even asked you out for merlin sake!
Lovesick James who stutters and stumbles over his words when speaking to you. You can hardly blame the lad, you're so pretty he just can't get his words out. It's a disaster when he tries to ask you on a date, he almost set you up with Moony once!
Lovesick James who insistes on sending Polaroid pictures to eachother during the holidays so you can still see eachother. He's more than happy to buy you the picture and the empty Polaroids, just promise you'll send him some pictures, yeah?

Sirius is the opposite of touchy, bro will punt you if you get too close (he’s traumatized annoyed by touch). James, Peter, and Remus are all pretty touchy people (Remus acts like he’s not bc he’s scared to hurt people, but he is). The first time Sirius gives them hugs (which are really just him awkwardly putting an arm around their shoulders and squeezing a bit, maybe with a back pat or something) they are bouncing off the fucking walls with excitement
