#literally wanted to add a metaphor about stuff growing like mushrooms on a log#and then brain went#‘wait but how logs?? trees? but hollow????’#and then I had to do a deep internet dive
@theuniverseismyaesthetic we were absolutely given the same brain to go through life with
i am sorry i was so close-
#how logs indeed#fun fact i've got a live standing hemlock near my house that is already on its hollow log journey#you can see through it!#absolutely not worrying at all#hemlocks are SUCH untrustworthy trees#hollowing often occurs while a tree is still alive and is super important for many lil creatures of the forest#nature's nest boxes baybeee#trees are SO cool#and their relationship with fungi is INCREDIBLE#last spring i inoculated some logs with mushroom-sawdust to grow mushrooms!#there are in fact ideal mushroom and log species pairings#the vaunted reishi?? she loves hem#oyster mushrooms?? birch#but your logs have to be fresh and not have mushrooms on them already (metaphorical mushrooms acceptable)#sorry this got away from me

White-rot on birch,
Lilac-grey dust that smells oddly
Of almonds?
Peach pits..
Cherry seeds!
The breeze carries the spores
Now that Spring is here,
We forage amidst the decaying trees
We posthole in the snow,
Still deep under the shade
Of rippling greenery,
A canopy of fresh, lime colored leaves
Hoping for just one basket
Of oyster mushrooms, hiratake,
For the recipe my grandmother gave

🍁🍁We’re closing on 60 acres of wilderness in northern Maine tomorrow!!! 🍁🍁
It’s hard to believe this dream is finally coming true. In September, we took a weekend and looked at properties all over eastern Maine. This one really spoke to us. We saw whitetail deer scat/tracks everywhere, several moose tracks, and a beaver pond with ducks. Lots of great hunting to be had. I also spotted apple trees, oyster mushrooms, and tons of white birch. Great foraging to be had there as well. There was once a house on this parcel, but it burned down decades ago. Fortunately, the well and septic system remain, and we can get those up and running if we want to. There’s also electric at the road that we can bring in pretty easily.
For now, we’re going to focus on the basics before winter sets in: clearing the driveway, setting up the fire pit, and planting wildflower seeds. We’ll be there next weekend to do some winter camping and hopefully get some work done. I wish we had time to sit in a tree stand, but that will have to wait until next year. We will have all winter to plan next year’s off grid camp setup.

I think of you when I see the moon and when I see the stars around it. When I see the endless sky above, and the worlds that fill it.
I think of you when I learn about nebulas and dwarf stars. I think of you when I think of Pluto, a planet abandoned but never forgotten.
I think of you when I see birch and oak, when I see sprouts growing and leaves wilting. I think of you when I see fallen trees and leaf piles.
I think of you when I see flowers and mushrooms. When I see lavender and foxglove, when I see pink oyster mushrooms and enoki.
I think of you when I see eggs and butterflies, life yet to be and life that already is. When death is far from me, you will always be my first dream.
I think of you when I see corpses and skulls, rotted wood and dead grass. When life is finally over, you will be my last thought.
Whether I see life or death, the start or the end, the moon or the stars, do not worry for you will always be in my thoughts.
Do you think of me when you see the moon?

Vanessa Chakour: My Innate Connection to Stolen Land
Red oak and red maple populate the living landscape of Mount Owen in the Northeastern U.S., along with birch, white pine, and beautiful old sugar maples. Native medicinals like common violet and rare blue cohosh flourish in the understory. Spicebush rims a vernal pool while goldenrod blooms around the forest edge. Otherworldly mushrooms like the reishi, oyster, and turkey tail mushrooms emerge…

Betula alleghaniensis - The Yellow Birch
Also known as the Swamp Birch or Golden Birch. A beautiful tree with a myriad of uses for the adventurer. The outer bark of the tree is a potent fire starter even when wet. The oils found in it can be reduced down to create a Birch oil or Birch tar. These can be used for adhesives, waterproofing, wood treating, and hide conditioning. The young twigs can be scraped to reveal a wintergreen scent. A product of the Methyl Salicylate produced in them. The young twigs can be boiled for a wintergreen tea. The oils from the trees also have a background in traditional medicine, used as a topical relief for skin conditions. These trees can also be tapped for the syrup, which can be boiled down for a maple syrup alternative. Multiple types of useful fungi can also be found on these trees. Chaga, (Inonotus obliquus) The Birch Polypore, (Fomitopsis betulina) and the Oyster Mushroom, (Pleurotus ostreatus) to name a few. If harvested for the wood, it provides a strong, closely grained wood with a nice weight to it.

Mushroom Chaga The Inonotus Obliquus, also known as the chaga mushroom, resembles burnt charcoal or wood and lives as a parasite on birch trees and other trees. It has a lot of healthy benefits, as evidenced by its high ORAC score. ORAC, which stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbent Capacity, measures a food's or ingredient's ability to protect the body from free radicals that cause breast cancer, liver disease, heart disease, and other diseases. The reishi mushroom (ganoderma lucidum), also known as red reishi or ling zhi, is important in Chinese herbal medicine because many people believe it has miraculous health benefits due to the miracle ganoderic acid. This medicinal item lowers blood pressure, strengthens the immune system, and helps with anxiety, hepatitis, insomnia, and cancer tumors.
Mushrooms, Oyster Pleorotus ostreatus has more applications than other types of mushrooms. The oyster mushroom, known as the most versatile, provides culinary, medicinal, and environmental benefits.
Mushrooms Shiitake Shiitake mushrooms have a meaty and versatile flavor that complements a variety of Asian dishes. Shiitake mushrooms are also high in B vitamins, which aid in the fight against cancer cells, infections, and cardiovascular disease.
Furthermore, shiitake aids in blood sugar control and is an excellent anti-inflammatory agent. Shiitake mushrooms contain all eight types of amino acids, which help with weight loss, muscle building, digestion, and overall wellness.
Mushroom Maitake Maitake (grifola frondosa) mushroom, also known as "hen of the woods," "king of mushrooms," "dancing mushroom," and sheep's head.
