This reduces the tidal volume of breathing. Avoid sleeping on your back. I know I look like a disciple of Darth Vader but the truth is many years ago I suffered a terrible accident just standing 8” off the floor slipped and put a whole in my lungs. I’ve always felt they’ve never been the same São bows the time to strengthen them hoping one day to swim two lengths underwater 😂 actually am a believer we sometimes need a helping hand to get further more efficiently and certain devices like this high altitude training mask 😷 will get me there. 9 out of 10 of us overbreathe 😱 and prior to just a year ago I myself had been a chronic over breather. It’s one of the biggest health issues you’ve never heard of. It causes fatigue, insomnia, asthma, anxiety, poor exercise tolerance, and both the cause and effect of feeling stressed. Overbreathing is one of the biggest health issues no one talks about. Inhaling high volumes of air depletes valuable CO2 (a hormone within the blood), a critical regulator of many functions in the body. Just the opposite of what we’ve been told! Inhaling too much air can be harmful. Inhaling excess air through the mouth is even worse creating a hyperventilation response called “respiratory alkalosis. Oxygen and carbon dioxide need a see-saw type balance. If one is high, the other is low. We want them balanced and managing each other. Hemoglobin is the carrier of oxygen. CO2 instructs hemoglobin to release the oxygen into the bloodstream. If we take in excess oxygen, we deplete CO2 and oxygen is not released from the hemoglobin. It is bound and unavailable. This is called the BOHR EFFECT. KEEP YOUR MOUTH CLOSED AT ALL TIMES. Mouth breathing, snoring and sighing disturbs the oxygen/carbon dioxide ratio, and impairs the release of nitric oxide from the nose. Can't beat a welcome home from @miraclemitzi 12.9M in the books with some new hacks! Covered the entire distance with my mouth closed, so nasal breathing only. I've been looking into some.of the fascinating info from @oxygenadvantage / @buteykoclinic //LONG POST WARNING //😴😴 Here are my findings: Initially my nose ran for the first 1-2 miles (I bought tissues as was preemptimg (t)issues. 😅✌ In later miles this was no longer a problem, tho sweat from my head dropped down around the nostrils and was a bit.of a pain. At first, nose only breathing is certainly a challenge, especially going up hills, even with my new MTB hills method. It takes some discipline when the 'oxygen hunger' hits on the hills for the first few times. The first time being a REAL challenge. I noticed paying so much more attention to my breath, and noted my thoughts were quite neutral, certainly not negative. I experimented with the cadence of breaths to steps and also going a few steps without breath. Going from 2 per half breath right up to 8, and occasionally running without breath for several steps. The noticable noticeable benefits were that I was at no point out of breath, and returning to a shallower calmer breath was 10 x quicker. I also noticed the perception of time change. The way points on the route that let me know what point I'm at, seemed to appear So much sooner than expected. I put this down to being largely hooked onto putting attention on the breath, so engaged fully most of the time. In fact, when my brain did wander I noticed the extended cadence of breath to stride diminish almost instantly. But the break of rhythm was enough to make me return to the related breaths. Other times, I let my breathing system regulate itself, and it's interesting to see how it did so, all with the mouth closed. The last quarter of the distance was as normal, ie an aching body. All in all, I will continue to use this method, and integrate it into my manly tabbing toolbelt.
