July 27: pressure | @jegulus-microfic | word count: 275
“Reg, watching the mailbox through the window isn’t going to make the mail come any faster,” James laughed as he gently pried his boyfriend away from the window overlooking their tiny front lawn.
“Jamie, the letter could arrive any day now,” Regulus protested as James pulled him away, lips turned down.
James led him to the kitchen of their flat. He pulled two mugs from the cupboard as Regulus retrieved two tea bags.
As James had finished boiling the water in the kettle, Regulus burst out, “The mail! James, it’s here!” His boyfriend took off running to their mailbox. “Come on!”
James quickly set the kettle aside and ran after Regulus. When he reached the front door, Regulus was already sprinting back to James clutching a thick envelope.
“It came!” He exclaimed. Regulus’ face was etched with nervousness as he used his thumb to tear open the envelope. Regulus snatched the letter out and scanned it eagerly. His eyes widened and he looked right up at James. “Baby, I got in!” Regulus cried jumping into James’ arms. “I got into that law program at Oxford!”
James exhaled as soon as the words left his boyfriend’s mouth and he felt an invisible pressure get lifted from his shoulders. James caught him and spun them in a circle. He set Regulus down and grabbed his face. He kissed Regulus and drew away to look in his eyes. “I’m so proud of you, love.”
Regulus’ face was glowing with happiness as he grinned from ear to ear. “I did it,” he mumbled, tears filling his eyes.
“You did it,” James murmured, stroking a stray tear from Regulus’ cheek.

thinking about how one of my best friends from school joined the oxford conservative association solely to take the piss and then stayed in it (despite openly being a labour supporter) because “everyone is gay and they throw absolutely wild parties” while the oxford labour club mostly just consists of in-fighting (everyone is also gay though.) they also said that everyone in both societies are absolutely awful people. and i feel like all of that is a fairly accurate microcosm of british politics.

“Swiftie” is officially one of The Oxford Languages “Words Of The Year”
The word was more than 10 times more common in September 2023 than a year before in September 2022, with a noticeable uptick in the use of the word likely related to the success of The Eras Tour.

Emilka, with a shy smile, handed her friend a beautiful card with a poem.
"On this day of giving and cheer,
St. Nicholas is here to bring near,
The spirit of generosity and care,
Making hearts lighter and woes spare.
With thoughts of you, my friend so dear,
May your heart be filled with love this year!"
- your friend, Emilia.
"This is a gift from me to you for St. Nicholas Day, dear Lord Byron. I hope you like it..."
@the-little-miss-poet
*Byron smiles, and tucks the card into a waistcoat pocket looking very touched.*
Why, thank you! This is very charming indeed! I also have a poem for you, if you should like it. It was written for a friend's daughter, but I think it suits you equally well:
"Not in those climes where I have late been straying,
Though Beauty long hath there been matchless deemed,
Not in those visions to the heart displaying
Forms which it sighs but to have only dreamed,
Hath aught like thee in Truth or Fancy seemed:
Nor, having seen thee, shall I vainly seek
To paint those charms which varied as they beamed—
To such as see thee not my words were weak;
To those who gaze on thee what language could they speak?
Ah! may’st thou ever be what now thou art,
Nor unbeseem the promise of thy Spring—
As fair in form, as warm yet pure in heart,
Love’s image upon earth without his wing,
And guileless beyond Hope’s imagining!
And surely she who now so fondly rears
Thy youth, in thee, thus hourly brightening,
Beholds the Rainbow of her future years,
Before whose heavenly hues all Sorrow disappears."

Hey any UK moots, genuine question So I'm LGBTQ+ and a US national doing an advanced degree in the UK, right. But because im adhd I forgot to ask when it was relevant, so askin now!
So like back in I think the first week of february, my faculty building was very abruptly covered in pride flags! This was a cool experience and to know that most of them were out of teacher's offices too (and that a few had brought their own) was a cool experience
But like. It was like COVERED in pride flags for like a month, and then they were taken off, so it wasn't like just a prof doin it themselves for their own identity or to show support. So the question is, I know Pride Month itself is June, but. Is there like. a SECOND UK pride in February or smthn??? Or did the faculty just Do A Thing and no one thought to explain it to the grad students lmao

Okay okay but as someone doing Renaissance literature as my masters right now, this is SO TRUE AND GREAT and is Actually Probably Why We Have Half These Plays
I can actually cite some of my textbooks when I get home I’m travelling rn but the one thing I really want to express and add on tho is
Shakespeare himself would not have been the one coming after you lmao in fact based on what we know (and a theory one of my professors told me about that Hamlet was actually based on another theatre’s similar show) he probably would have been cool with it
The theatre company would, or the publishers guild, since the theatre company owned the rights as soon as Shakespeare wrote the play for them and the publishers guild would have been the one to dictate if a copy could have been published legally or not
That said this is definitely further proof piracy is great for literary preservation mhm
One of my favourite bits of media history trivia is that back in the Elizabethan period, people used to publish unauthorised copies of plays by sending someone who was good with shorthand to discretely write down all of the play's dialogue while they watched it, then reconstructing the play by combining those notes with audience interviews to recover the stage directions; in some cases, these unauthorised copies are the only record of a given play that survives to the present day. It's one of my favourites for two reasons:
It demonstrates that piracy has always lay at the heart of media preservation; and
Imagine being the 1603 equivalent of the guy with the cell phone camera in the movie theatre, furtively scribbling down notes in a little book and hoping Shakespeare himself doesn't catch you.
