Be An Overcomer Through the Holy Ghost!
“For we know the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin.” Romans 7:14 Being an overcomer of sin through the Holy Ghost is like a lifeguard saving a struggling swimmer from drowning; the Holy Ghost can come to our rescue if we seek Him and rely on His power to help us overcome our sins. Through sin, our lives can become cluttered with various difficulties that seem insurmountable. But…

“The Philistines took him and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza. They bound him with bronze fetters, and he became a grinder in the prison” (Judges 16: 21).
That is what sin does. It blinds you and makes a fool out of you.
Sin causes people to do completely irrational things. We all know the story: men and women leave loving spouses and precious children to go have their so-called fling. Then they come to regret it. Samson gave into sin not knowing he’s being robbed of his calling of being Israel’s judge, until his eyes were gouged out of his sockets.
Sin will take you farther than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay, and cost you more than you want to pay.
Don’t be deceived by sin. If it comes knocking on your door, don’t answer.

I have a germ of a theory that good Christian fiction has stories that are less about shaving down your personality to meet some specific mold of what a good Christian looks like, and more about "how gloriously different are all the saints."
Not that the Christian life doesn't involve fighting against our own sinful nature and conforming ourselves to Christ-like behavior, but I think it makes for better, more realistic, and more universal stories when you also recognize that people have different gifts and flaws and they're going to be called to use their unique personalities to serve the kingdom of God in their own unique way, instead of assuming everyone has to conform themselves to a very specific (often secular-culturally based) image of good behavior. It makes for a much more vibrant story.
#catholic things#books#i'm still ruminating on charlotte yonge#because i usually contrast modern christian fiction with how the classics incorporated christianity#but she's the first classic victorian author i've found that i'd describe as writing christian fiction#which makes for a more direct comparison#she did handle religion in some very good ways#but i tried another of her books after 'heir'#and it reminded me of what i didn't like about the childhood section of 'heir'#but magnified a lot#she wants to show her children overcoming flaws#but she has a very narrow english anglo-catholic view of goodness#and that means her idea of christianity can come across as very judgemental and narrow-minded#things that are not actually sins in and of themselves are treated as moral failings inherent to other cultures#and the kids spend so much time worrying about cutting out sin that you don't get to see enough of their unique personality#i'd be willing to try more from her but i think i'd have to stick to the stories about adult characters

In grace something is overcome; grace occurs 'in spite of' something; grace occurs 'in spite of' separation and estrangement. Grace is the reunion of life with life, the reconciliation of the self with itself. Grace is the acceptance of that which is rejected. Grace transforms fate into a meaningful destiny; it changes guilt into confidence and courage. There is something triumphant in the word grace : in spite of the abounding of sin grace abounds much more. ~ Paul Tillich

There is a somewhat infuriating person who keeps coming up on our fyp, who firmly believes that no person should ever be allowed to cover up hateful tattoos, and that any tattoo artist who does so is an awful person. Because to him they deserved to wear the mark of what they were forever, to never find community or healing or the chance to make a positive change in the world around them.
I will likely never interact with this man, but it is always tempting to ask;
At what point does sin stain a soul forever? At what point is someone truly, irrevocably irredeemable? At what point do they cease to be a human, a creature capable of change and good? At what point did you decide that punishing the stained and irredeemable was worth the cost of trying to make the world better?
It is always punishment. Some idea of righteous sadism that outweighs the fact that the past is the past and will always be the past and the future can always be better, so long as it is there to change.
Pragmatically, this approach does nothing but make you edge closer to the people who think mere existence is the sin that stains the body the soul the blood. To the people that believe ‘criminal’ is a state of being rather than circumstance. To the very type of sin you say is incurable.
Anyway. Anger without focused intent towards positive change is, as the kids say, cringe.
#of; soleil#the use of the word sin is intentional and designed to hearken to christianity#but be aware that is not the path i am on#non rebloggable because the rest of the system have no intent towards Entering The Discourse again#i was simply overcome with The Urge and figured i might as well post the word-vomit for other eyes

Victory Over the Power of Evil (Luke 4:31-37)
Even though our thinking is important and critical, there is more to it than that: Orthodoxy (right belief) requires orthopraxy (right actions).
He went down to Capernaum, a village in Galilee. He was teaching the people on the Sabbath. They were surprised and impressed—his teaching was so forthright, so confident, so authoritative, not the quibbling and quoting they were used to. In the meeting place that day there was a man demonically disturbed. He screamed, “Stop! What business do you have here with us, Jesus? Nazarene! I know what…

Fun fact: I've never heard the first part of this hymn before! I had no idea it goes so hard!
#christianity#jesus paid it all#the phrase was repeated a lot in today's sermon so I looked up the old song#and I kinda just sat in awe of the first few lines#the sermon already kinda destroyed me since it was about rejecting legalism and accepting God's free grace and love#reminding us to not burden ourselves with trying to live up to standards but receiving His spirit who's already done the work for us#and this is how He has set us free from the burdens and sins we know we cannot make up for or overcome ourselves#and I've been needing to hear that exact thing repeatedly for a couple years now

Manifesting Mischief: A Playful Look at the 7 Deadly Sins through the Lens of the Law of Attraction
Unlocking Your Potential: Transforming Sins into Strengths with Self-Discovery and Manifestation Last week, while I was on a car journey with my friends while going to Porto, I was recounting how my hairdresser had decided to make me look ridiculous by giving me a dreadful fringe and miserably destroying my beautiful long hair. I complained to my friends, revealing to them that I am aware of…

“God has defeated Satan through the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. Through this overwhelming victory, God has also empowered you to overcome any temptation to sin and has provided sufficient resources for you to respond biblically to any problem of life. By relying on God’s power and being obedient to His Word, you can be an overcomer in any situation.” - John Broger

Fun thing about category theory...
#and also language i guess#we define our own limitations so that we can understand things#we apply those limitations to interact#sin is when we apply our limitations to people who are not bound by those limitations#and it's easiest to do when we have been sinned against#we each have different limitations to overcome#different parts of the puzzle to solve#i had A LOT of limitations#it's not that i am better than you#it's that i started off worse#and then people who loved me made me into who i was always meant to be#and IT HURT#but because they loved me#they cut the cocoon off#maybe faster than was necessary#maybe more painfully#maybe i would have understood more if i had spent more time in the cocoon#but i clung to the parts i needed#mourned the parts they took from me before i was ready#and now i have become a butterfly#i will not be trapped by my cocoon#perhaps i will be limited by having it cut off piece by piece#but it will not fester#they loved me that much even though they knew not what they did#and this time your butterfly will take pity and teach you#and only fly away when the time is right#all i ask is that you feed the caterpillars properly so they won't eat my siblings when they emerge

Unmasking Monsters: Discovering the True Nature of Fear and Faith
What Defines a Monster? When we think of a monster, vivid images often spring to mind: towering beasts with sharp claws and menacing growls or grotesque creatures lurking in the shadows. But in reality, what makes someone or something a monster transcends mere physical appearance. A monster embodies malice, fear, and the power to cause harm. It manipulates our understanding and instills dread,…

Finding Forgiveness and Spiritual Strength Through Christ’s Healing Power and Grace
Redemption through Christ brings hope and healing to even the most broken hearts. It’s more than forgiveness—it’s a chance to grow spiritually, find strength, and feel His mercy daily. The Savior’s grace invites us to let go of our pain, trust in His power, and embrace a renewed life. Scriptures remind us, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew…
