“We got divorced.”

Obi-Wan is so certain he must have misunderstood that he nearly laughs out loud. “I’m sorry, I don’t think I caught that last word.”

“Divorced.”

Anakin’s voice is ever-so-slightly muffled by his position hunched over the engine, but there’s still no mistaking the word, not after two times. “Divorced? As in…is this some type of new slang you’ve picked up from Ahsoka?”

“No.”

“See, but there’s no way you could be divorced, because for that to happen, you had to have been…” Obi-Wan trails off at Anakin’s expression.

“Married,” Anakin finishes for him, and Obi-Wan, The Negotiator of silver-tongued fame, who quips and parleys his way through diplomatic disputes and lightsaber duels, does not have a single word at his disposal, not even a syllable. His mind fills with a static hum, and he has the strangest sensation of floating away from his own body, hovering above and watching the moment as a detached being.

“Don’t hate me here, but, well, yeah. You do sort of have a thing for self-sabotage.” Obi-Wan opens his mouth to argue the assessment, but Quinlan continues, “And you should still ask. Maybe he’s just as good at hiding his feelings as you are. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.”

“Nothing to lose? I would lose everything.”
