I spent entirely too much time on this, but I really got going. I also probably missed a few people (and didn't even start on the crew because of so much overlap). I'm not sure if this is just Vancouver film industry at work or what, but I am done.

Note
Cal sits in the library going over countless missing person's reporters. They aren't surprised by how many people have gone missing in Hatchetfield, but it doesn't make this any easier.
They stop their hand as they realize they have been mindlessly petting the pile of warmth in their lap. Again. They don't have much to go on. The way the girl talked, it sounded like she was pretty young, and tamogatchis were really big back in the late 90s/early 2000s and that is pretty much it. Hopefully it's enough.
-@calaverage
It takes a while before Cal finds anything of interest. There are a lot of reports of missing people in Hatchetfield.
Though after hours of searching they come a cross something. A missing poster, part of a news article, and a photo. [lore time]
The photo is of a young boy smiling up at a camera. He’s hugging a rabbit plushie to his chest. Clipped to his belt loop is a pale green tamagotchi. The kid has a too long fluffy hair that falls over his face. His eyes are closed in the photo as he smiles widely. The teeth of the kid are messed up, he’s missing a few, probably from just being around the age that those get lost and his two front teeth are both too big and have a gap between them. Freckles dot across the kids face.
The Missing Poster is of a young girl. In the photo she’s shyly looking at the camera. She’s dressed in a puffy pink and white dress like a princess. In one hand she clutches a familiar blue tamagotchi and in the other a book on farm animals. She has curly black hair and big brown eyes. On her arms are those fake kid tattoos, there’s one or two on her face as well.
The missing poster begs for her to be returned, with an amount of money promised that Cal gets the feeling would have financial ruined the family of this little girl. Mia Solace is listed as her name.
The last thing is the piece of newspaper article. Listing off four missing kids.
Mia Solace
Carter Zimmerman
Zane Hendrix
Quinine Whitlock
All of who went missing at the same time, all who had received tamagotchi from the company Angelic Wires after winning a raffle from some kid’s show, none of which have been found.

Something About Every Player the USMNT is Bringing to the World Cup
Tumblr media
Matt Turner: definitely our starter for the upcoming World Cup. One of the best in terms of shot-stopping. 100% save percentage right now for Arsenal in the Europa League. Well deserved start.
Ethan Horvath: a fantastic back up for the USMNT. His save in the Nations League final against Mexico cemented him as a legend. Provides reliability if we are forced to turn to him.
Sean Johnson: a veteran presence for the national team, which is never a bad thing to have at the World Cup. Has been quite good for NYCFC this season and has been a part of a system that plays out of the back.
Tumblr media
Cameron Carter-Vickers: has been one of, if not the best, defender in the Scottish Premier League this season for Celtic. Absolutely deserving of his place and should be looked to as a starter in the back.
Tim Ream: a surprise inclusion for some USMNT followers, but certainly not undeserved. With Brooks and Richards out, Ream will be the best central defender on this roster. His age of 34 will both help and hinder his minutes, but expect him to be a starter at some point during the group stages.
Walker Zimmerman: currently playing for Nashville SC, he has consistently improved under club and country. A presence in both the air and on the ground, he makes a reliable back up for this roster.
Aaron Long: easily the most controversial inclusion for the defenders, ahead of other prospects like McKenzie or injured Richards and out-of-favor Brooks. But Long has played his career in systems built around pressing and while his current form might leave him out of the starting line up, he has been a staple of this team throughout qualifying.
Sergiño Dest: incredible talent that has at least been getting more consistent minutes since his move to Milan this past summer. A threat going forward, Dest’s chemistry with our starting wingers cannot be understated. Expect him to start at this World Cup.
Antonee Robinson: likely the USMNT’s most important defender due to his impact on both ends of the pitch. His speed is a great weapon on defense and he has been a mainstay at left-back for Fulham for several years.
Joe Scally: another absolute deserved inclusion. A 19-year old playing every game for Borussia Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga. Gladbach’s coach even praised him as their “player of the season” last year. Consistently overlooked in Europe, don’t be surprised if he gets the start over Dest.
DeAndre Yedlin: it cannot be understated how important his presence in the locker room will be. The only player on the roster who has been to a previous Word Cup. An electric youngster in 2014, he will be looked at as a level-headed leader in 2022.
Shaq Moore: the inclusion that surprised me the most, Moore had struggled in La Liga to find consistent minutes, but since moving to Nashville SC, he has been a top performer in the MLS. A sold back up for this roster.
Tumblr media
Brenden Aaronson: an absolute revelation of a player this year at Leeds. The biggest critique from club fans has been that the youngster occasionally tries too hard. An elite presser, Aaronson is best at playing the “pass before the pass” and an excellent creator of goal scoring chances.
Tyler Adams: a similar stand out for Leeds, Adams has been looking like one of the best defensive midfielders in Europe. Who I want to see wearing the USMNT captain armband, Adams is a leader on and off the pitch. Superb reader of the game.
Yunus Musah: a 19-year-old starter in La Liga, Musah has been instrumental to the USMNT’s game play. When Musah is not on the pitch, the team suffers. A true ball carrier, Musah is often where the USMNT’s attacks start.
Luca De La Torre: although questionable due to recent injury, USMNT fans let out a collective sigh of relief upon seeing De La Torre’s name. An essential back up for McKennie, De La Torre has decisively earned his spot on this roster.
Kellyn Acosta: going from Europe-Bound youngster to being dropped from the National Team and traded is tough to come back from and lesser players may have crumbled. But Acosta boards the flight to Qatar an MLS Cup Champion (with a stunning opening goal) and a well earned spot on the roster.
Weston McKennie: arguably one of the best players the US has ever produced, McKennie is a mainstay in Juventus’s midfield and often the only positive about many of their games. A personality that you need in your locker rooms and on the field, McKennie will look to be a stand-out performer at this Word Cup.
Christian Roldan: another controversial inclusion, but Roldan’s presence and tactical mindset can only benefit the US. While not expecting much playing time, Roldan is a coach in the making and his attitude will be instrumental in leading this young squad.
Tumblr media
Christian Pulisic: heralded as the greatest USMNT player, Pulisic will be looking to prove himself at the World Cup. But to most USMNT fans, he long since has. A leader in the team, his ability and skill will be imperative for US success.
Giovanni Reyna: for a while, it was doubtful Reyna could stay healthy enough to make this roster, and while it is still unlikely he will play a full 90 this tournament, Reyna is the difference maker you need at the World Cup. It may be controversial to say, but the most talented player on this roster.
Timothy Weah: a player with the potential to be our most dangerous player during any given game, a hard worker on and off the ball. Weah has the potential to change a game when he comes on the field and is often overlooked by the fan base.
Josh Sargent: a story of perseverance. Looking like one of our best strikers in the youth leagues, Sargent struggled in bad teams under bad management and went through a downturn in form that ended him in the Championship where he become a formidable player once again.
Jordan Morris: another controversial inclusion. Once on the precipice of a move to Europe, Morris found himself instead fighting back from a gruesome injury. To see him make a World Cup roster is a heartening. With tough completion ahead of him, it is unlikely he will see much of the field, but Morris is always a hard worker during his minutes.
Haji Wright: a surprise inclusion in this roster, Wright has just 3 caps for the USMNT, where he scored only 1 goal. However, Wright has found form this season in the Turkish League, being one of the top strikers, and his like-for-like replacement for Ferreira puts him ahead of others who were fighting for this position.
Jesus Ferreira: his work rate off the ball truly cemented his place on this roster. While it is a toss up with Sargent over who starts, you’re likely to see Ferreira at the 9 in most of the games. While he sometimes occupies space in which our wingers like to develop, he is a worthy inclusion for work both on and off the ball.

saw the nationals beat the yankees tonight which was very good (fuck the yankees). the nationals have a nice park which was neat to see and i did enjoy the fact that it was also in dc proper (went to the commanders game on sunday out in landover and it was a bad time at a bad stadium)
but wandering around the park did make me think some thoughts:
the washington nationals fly four flags at the park, each representing a pennant won by a washington baseball team: the 2019 national league pennant won by the nationals, and three american league pennants won by the washington senators (1927, 1929, and 1933). to me this seems like the nationals are trying to claim the senators' pennants, which to me is trifling at best, especially considering the senators are still around (as the minnesota twins). that they don't claim either the 1927 and 1929 world series wins i would say means that they think they can get away with it.
the nationals also have a ring of honor, which is standard for many sports teams in north america as a way of acknowledging the impact of certain people (usually players, but often including a team's first/longest (and probably most racist) owner). the nationals include frank robinson (as manager) and ivan "pudge" rodriguez in this ring of honor, despite both only being with the team for one year. the other three people from the nationals in the ring of honor include ted lerner (former owner, see earlier), jayson werth, and ryan zimmerman (who actually got his number retired). no comment on these three because their inclusion is understandable. frank robinson and pudge are great but i don't understand why they're there.
also included in the ring of honor are the following montreal expos players; gary carter, andre dawson, tim raines. these players played a combined zero games in washington dc. tim raines had never even visited the city until he was added. to me this is a kick in the dick to any expos fans that still remain out there. the nationals also sell expos merchandise in the team store
also included in the ring of honor are ten players from the washington senators (1901-1960) and two players from the washington senators (1961-1971). i am not planning to check but i would bet a significant amount of money that most of these players were dead by the time the nationals first started playing (harmon killebrew was still alive at the time for sure). none of their numbers are retired (and some of the earlier players, such as walter johnson, predated numbering players) but this seems trifling as well.
and included in the ring of honor are six players from the homestead grays of various negro leagues from the early 20th century. i don't think this is trifling. i flatly just think this is insulting.
i think the nationals would be well suited to building a "museum of dc baseball" adjacent or attached to the park. it would allow them to talk about the history of baseball in dc (and why two teams moved in quick succession) while allowing them to feel like part of that history. including the homestead grays in this museum would not feel as patronizing, either.

USMNT Copa America 2024 Roster: Projecting the players 23
The 2024 Copa América will provide the U.S. men’s national team with a huge opportunity to show it can compete with the world’s best ahead of a home World Cup in 2026.
Tumblr media
It will also be the last chance the USMNT has to face strong opposition in meaningful competition ahead of the next World Cup, which will put plenty of pressure on Gregg Berhalter and his team.
The USMNT has been handed an ideal draw in Group C, with winnable games versus Bolivia and Panama alongside a true test against Uruguay, which should serve the team well ahead of any potential knockout round matches.
Berhalter will have plenty to think about before his side kicks off the tournament on June 23, not least of which will be the 23 players he’ll name to the roster.
Here are our picks for the players Berhalter will name to his roster for the 2024 Copa América.
Goalkeepers: Matt Turner, Drake Callender, Gabriel Slonina Despite an up-and-down debut season with Nottingham Forest, it’s hard to imagine anybody other than Turner in goal when the Copa América kicks off.
Part of that is down to Turner’s performances with the USMNT and part is simply because no viable alternative has emerged recently.
Two of those possible alternatives, Zack Steffen and Ethan Horvath, haven’t played at all in months. Steffen has secured a move to the Colorado Rapids, while Horvath needs to leave Nottingham Forest, where he’s currently third string.
With Steffen needing to re-prove himself in MLS and Horvath’s future uncertain, we’re giving Callender and Slonina the nod here. The USMNT goalkeeper situation behind Turner, though, is highly fluid and subject to change.
Defenders: Sergiño Dest, Antonee Robinson, Joe Scally, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Miles Robinson, Tim Ream, Chris Richards, Kristoffer Lund Robinson is an absolute lock to start at left back and Dest’s comeback season at PSV means he’s close to a lock at right back, despite his complete meltdown in the USMNT’s last match.
Center back is a real trouble spot for this team. Ream has impressed over the past two years but time could be catching up with him. Robinson had a down year in 2023 and is staying in MLS instead of testing himself abroad. Carter-Vickers has been a standout with Celtic but could use to test himself at a higher level. Richards can’t get minutes at defense with Crystal Palace but has been converted to an every-game starter in midfield of late.
And those are the players on the roster.
World Cup starter Walker Zimmerman has recently been a healthy scratch from national team rosters. Auston Trusty could be next in line for a call-up, as he’s getting valuable Premier League minutes on an admittedly limited Sheffield United squad. Mark McKenzie is in the mix as well.
Scally is a solid bet to make the squad as a utility fullback, and can even play center back in a pinch. The backup left back position is up for grabs, as it has been for a while. Dest may be the actual backup, but Lund gets the nod for now to boost the team’s depth.
Midfielders: Johnny Cardoso, Tyler Adams, Luca de la Torre, Yunus Musah, Weston McKennie, Gio Reyna, Malik Tillman The health of Adams is the biggest question mark in the USMNT midfield at this point. If he returns in February or March as Bournemouth’s owner expects him to, then the USMNT captain will have plenty of time to recapture his starting spot ahead of the Copa América.
That could see the MMA midfield reconstituted, with Musah and (especially) McKennie enjoying strong campaigns in Serie A.
We could also see Reyna continue to start at the No. 10 in a more attacking setup. The 21-year-old continues to struggle for minutes at Dortmund, but he’s a lock to play a prominent role at the Copa América if healthy.
Tillman is almost redundant with Reyna on the squad as well, but the PSV midfielder is starting to put it all together and is simply too talented to keep off this roster — though he’s yet to make a real impact with the USMNT.
Cardoso’s spot as a backup No. 6 looks secure regardless of Adams’ health, but the new Real Betis signing would obviously have a much bigger role in the event of another setback. So too would fellow La Liga midfielder De la Torre, whose ball progression and ability in possession make him too valuable to leave off this squad.
Forwards: Christian Pulisic, Tim Weah, Ricardo Pepi, Folarin Balogun, Haji Wright Pulisic and Weah are locks to start at the two wide forward positions, while the No. 9 role is becoming an intriguing competition between Pepi and Balogun.
Balogun looks to be the favorite but is in the midst of a scoring slump at Monaco, while Pepi has done nothing but score for PSV and the USMNT over the past year — but almost always as a substitute. He clearly deserves more minutes, but he’s proving rather valuable off the bench as well.
The final spot is a difficult choice, but Wright just gets the nod over Brenden Aaronson. At some point, Aaronson’s collapse in club form is going to cost him on the national team level, and there are no shortage of alternatives who could take his spot this summer.
Wright is the choice for now. The Coventry City attacker is having a strong campaign and has recently been at his most effective while playing as a winger. That ability to play wide or as a No. 9 gives him the edge.
That only leaves one backup winger in this forward group, but Reyna and Tillman have played the position for the USMNT in the recent past. Though both are more comfortable inside, that ability could allow Berhalter to only take five players in the forward group. Dest could also move up to play a more defensive winger role if needed.
Aside from Aaronson, there are a whole host of talented players who could miss out, including Josh Sargent. The Norwich striker could make himself impossible to leave out, however, with a strong run of scoring form — which could also be said for Daryl Dike or Brandon Vazquez.
Kevin Paredes is young and super talented but still doesn’t quite seem ready for extended minutes for club or country. He looks like a strong candidate for the 2026 World Cup squad, though, if he continues his upward trajectory.
Projected 2024 USMNT Copa America roster Goalkeepers (3): Matt Turner, Drake Callender, Gabriel Slonina

Realism is Bad, Actually

* Description: * We say we love "realistic" fiction like Batman, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Horizon: Forbidden West. We say we love when our characters "act like real people" and "have realistic dialogue." But it's worth asking: Are these things ACTUALLY realistic? And if not, is realism even worth trying to capture?

Pollstar published their list of the top touring artists of the 2010s in North America. U2 came in first with a gross of $1,038,104,132, followed by The The Rolling Stones ($929,196,083), Ed Sheeran ($922,361,663), Taylor Swift ($899,627,048) and Bon Jovi ($868,715,392).
2016 - Johnny Cash
The Hendersonville, Tennessee property where Johnny Cash and his wife June Carter Cash lived for most of their thirty five years of marriage was put up for sale by the current owner. The house was destroyed in a fire in 2007, but a one-bedroom apartment building, a tennis court, a swimming pool and a covered boat dock remained standing. The couple made their home there until their deaths in 2003.
2010 - The Beatles
After just one week of availability on the iTunes store, The Beatles music sold more than 450,000 albums and 2 million individual songs. The Fab Four's debut on iTunes was accompanied by an extensive world-wide marketing plan
2005 - Bob Dylan
Poems written by Bob Dylan in his college days sold for $78,000 (£45,000) at a New York City auction. The 16 pages of poems were the first known time Robert Zimmerman used the Dylan name and came from his studies at the University of Minnesota during 1959-60.
2004 - U2
U2 shot the video for 'All Because Of You' from a moving flat bed truck on the streets of Brooklyn in New York City. Later in the day, they performed a brief concert under the Brooklyn Bridge, which was taped by MTV for a later showing.
2004 - Ozzy Osbourne
Ozzy Osbourne struggled with a burglar who escaped with jewellery worth about £2m from his Buckinghamshire mansion. Osbourne told reporters that he had the masked raider in a headlock as he tried to stop him. The burglar broke free and jumped 30 ft from a first floor window. A large amount of jewellery was stolen in the raid in which two burglars were involved.
1994 - Pearl Jam
Pearl Jam released their third studio album Vitalogy, which was first released on vinyl and became the first vinyl album to appear on the US chart, since the domination of the compact disc format. They followed the release in other formats two weeks later, whereupon it became the second-fastest-selling CD in history, behind only the band's previous release Vs.
1991 - Alice Cooper
Alice Cooper came to the rescue of two fans; Patrick and Dee Ann Kelly, whose California home was about to be re-possessed. Patrick had painted Coopers face on the house to help sell the property. Mr Cooper signed autographs to help raise money for the couple.
1990 - Bill Wyman
Bill Wyman announced that his 17-month marriage to model Mandy Smith was over. With the consent of her mother, Smith had started dating the 47-year-old Rolling Stones bassist when she was aged 13.
1969 - Iron Butterfly
Iron Butterfly supported by Steel Mill, (featuring Bruce Springsteen) appeared at the Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia. The gig was held in the school's 3,500- seat Crenshaw Gymnasium.
1968 - The Beatles
The Beatles double White Album was released in the UK. Featuring 'Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da', 'Dear Prudence', 'Helter Skelter', 'Blackbird' 'Back In The USSR' and George Harrison's 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps'. Priced at £3.13 shillings, ($8.76), it spent eight weeks as the UK No.1 album.
1957 - Simon and Art Garfunkel
Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel appeared as Tom and Jerry on ABC-TV's American Bandstand. Close friends through childhood, the first time they appeared on stage together was in a school play, Alice in Wonderland (Simon as the White Rabbit, Garfunkel as the Cheshire Cat). They later began performing together in their junior year as Tom and Jerry, with Simon as Jerry Landis and Garfunkel as Tom Graph.

My Favorite Movies
**minor spoilers ahead**
Marriage Story
Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson star in this 2019 movie. Adam and Scarlett play a couple in the process of getting a divorce. They were happily married for a while with an 8-year-old son, but now their wants and goals do not align with each other. This movie shows the struggle of divorce for the couple and the kid(s). Laura Dern was the only person to win an Oscar for this movie. She won for best supporting actress. Both Driver and Johansson were nominated as well as the film for Best Picture and Best Screenplay.
As a child of divorced parents, I felt drawn to this movie. I saw the parents struggle to keep their son Charlie happy, but the fight over custody was brutal and heartbreaking. Driver and Johansson’s characters fight and scream in the biggest moment of the movie telling each other how much they hate the other. It is emotional and powerful to see this once happy couple despise each other. I have watched this movie twice, but I am always eager to watch it again when I learn that someone has not seen it. Adam Driver is one of my favorite actors so of course he is a big reason why I enjoy the film so much.
The BlacKkKlansman
Directed by Spike Lee and produced by Jordan Peele among others, the lead actors in this film are John David Washington, Adam Driver (are you sensing a theme here?), Topher Grace, and Laura Harrier. Based on a true story, Washington plays a Black police officer from Colorado named Ron Stallworth, and Driver plays his Jewish partner, Flip Zimmerman. Set in the 1970s, Washington and Driver’s characters both infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). Stallworth Calls the KKK and poses as a white man. When Stallworth is invited to one of their meetings, he asks his partner Zimmerman to go and pose as him. Stallworth eventually becomes a member of the KKK after many phone calls with Grand Wizard David Duke. In the end, the two are able to prevent the KKK from doing something terrible, but I will let you find out what that is. The film won one Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
I really enjoyed this movie, so much so that I went to see it twice in theaters. It was released in 2018, almost a year after the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. This rally was full of white supremists, neo-nazis, and anti-Semites, to name just a few. At the end of the movie, there is a montage comparing the racism of the 1970s to the racism that is still around today. I cried in the theatre both times while watching this montage. Sadly, this movie is just as relevant today as it was in 2018 and is extremely moving.
Fight Club
Directed by David Fincher (who produced the Netflix shows House of Cards and Mindhunter). this thriller/drama movie premiered in 1999 and stars Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, and Helena Bonham Carter. It is hard to talk about this movie without completely spoiling it, but I found it to be an entertaining watch. If you have seen the TV show Mr. Robot, you will probably enjoy the themes of this movies. If you have seen this movie and not Mr. Robot, go watch it now! Mr. Robot is a more modern-day version of Fight Club and for those that prefer shows to movies, like me, I would suggest it over the movie. Both address the rich elite and the forgotten about poor. Fight Club received polarized reviews. There were many that hated it when it was released, but it has now become a cult classic. It is ranked number 12 on IMDb’s top 250 movies list.

I'm currently trying to read up on the subject of female hunger and hunger as a metaphor for desire for a novel. Can you show me some good essays/articles about this?
excellent subject, anon!! i’d love to read whatever you come up with
- first! “Love of the Wolf” from Stigmata: Escaping Texts by Hélène Cixous
- then, an excerpt of Cixous’ The Laugh of Medusa
Tumblr media
from there, read some Susan Sontag—the hunger artist- excerpts from the article
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- excerpt from The Soul Knows Its Hunger, Simone Weil
Tumblr media
my loves from antiquity:
- excerpt from Agamemnon, by Aeschylus; this is Clytemnestra speaking

furthermore, in poetry:- “Hunger corrupts, and absolute hunger / corrupts absolutely, / or almost. Of course there are mothers, / squeezing their breasts / dry, pawning their bodies, / shedding teeth for their children, / or that’s our fond belief. / But remember—Hansel / and Gretel were dumped in the forest / because their parents were starving. / Sauve qui peut. To survive / we’d all turn thief / and rascal, or so says the fox, / with her coat of an elegant scoundrel, / her white knife of a smile, / who knows just where she’s going: / to steal something / that doesn’t belong to her—some chicken, or one more chance, / or other life.” (Red Fox, Margaret Atwood) - “it is our custom / to consume / the person we love.” (The Cannibal’s Canción, Gloria Anzaldúa) - Decreation, Anne Carson
in prose:- “Having once seen the world naked, the engine which drove Marya Morevna through the long, thin streets of Petrograd was a terrible hunger for knowing things, for knowing everything.” (Deathless, Catherynne M. Valente) - “She rises when the sun sets and goes immediately to her table where she plays her game of patience until she grows hungry, until she becomes ravenous.” (“The Lady of the House of Love” from The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories by Angela Carter) - Rosemary’s Baby, Ira Levin

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
April 2, 2021
Heather Cox Richardson
I spent all day writing only to emerge tonight to a flood of news.
Some of it is tragic but seems random: a man apparently drove a car into a barricade near the White House, injuring two Capitol Police officers before hitting the barrier. He got out of the car with a knife, and police officers shot him when he did not respond to their commands. He died. So did one of the Capitol Police officers, an 18-year veteran of the force, Officer William “Billy” Evans. The assailant has been identified as 25-year-old Noah Green of Indiana, and he appears to have feared that the CIA and the FBI were targeting him with mind control.
Other news seems to be about rebuilding the nation from the troubles of the previous administration: President Joe Biden had a 30-40 minute phone call with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in which Biden reaffirmed U.S. support for Ukraine’s burgeoning democracy as Russia builds up troops in the region. Former president Trump soured the U.S. relationship with Ukraine when he tried to get Zelenskyy to announce an investigation into Hunter Biden, Joe Biden’s son, to discredit the man he expected—correctly—to be his main rival in the 2020 presidential election, before Trump would release money Ukraine needed to defend itself against Russia.
Also today, the U.S. and Iran agreed to talk again about the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the nuclear deal that Trump abandoned, to limit Iran’s program of enriching uranium that could be used for a nuclear weapon. With our abandonment of JCPOA, Iran resumed elements of its enrichment program. Both sides are hoping to make headway on a new deal before Iran’s presidential election in June.
The United States has also lifted sanctions the Trump administration had imposed on the top prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Fatou Bensouda, after she began an investigation into U.S. forces in Afghanistan for alleged war crimes. The U.S. is not a member of the court, and the Biden administration says it disagrees strongly with the court’s actions but wants to address those concerns through engagement rather than sanctions.
In a new indictment yesterday, prosecutors revealed that the founder of the Oath Keepers, Stewart Rhodes, his deputy, and three members of the far-right group who acted as guards for Trump loyalist Roger Stone exchanged 19 phone calls over three hours during the January 6 attack on the Capitol. The indictment indicates that federal officials have a very clear timeline of the events of that day.
The trial of Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota, continues. Today Lt. Richard Zimmerman, the head of the Minneapolis police department’s homicide division, testified that kneeling on Floyd’s neck while he was handcuffed, as Chavin did, was “totally unnecessary,” and that the officers should “absolutely” have stopped restraining Floyd once he was in handcuffs, as that position on its own makes it hard to breathe.
And then there are the ways in which the country appears to be roaring back from the low point of the past year. Today U.S. healthcare professionals put almost 4 million shots into arms, bringing our daily average for the past week to almost 3 million. Nearly 40% of all adults in the U.S. have had at least one dose of the vaccine. And yet, coronavirus infections are rising again, spurred by new, highly contagious variants of the virus into areas where safety precautions have been relaxed. The seven-day average of new cases is more than 62,000 cases a day, with just below 900 deaths a day.
The Labor Department today said that the U.S. added 916,000 jobs in March, the best job growth since last August, dropping the unemployment rate to 6%. This is excellent news, but we still have 8.4 million fewer jobs than we had in February 2020, before the pandemic.
And then there is Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL), who is at the center of a scandal which includes pretty much everything: women, girls, state lines, drugs, cash, fake IDs, and so on. Where it will all end up is entirely unclear, but it is notable that the Fox News Channel, where Gaetz has been a regular, made a point of stating that it has “no interest” in hiring Gaetz. Only Representatives Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) have spoken out to defend Gaetz, and both of them have troubles in their own backgrounds.
But the lasting story today is the one that will hang over everything until it is resolved: the attempt of Republican legislators in 43 states to suppress voting with what are now 361 voter suppression bills across the country.
Today Major League Baseball announced it was pulling the 2021 All-Star Game and the MLB draft from Georgia in response to the state’s new voter suppression law, passed last week. The announcement drew fury from Republican officials.
They attacked MLB’s move by as a product of “cancel culture and woke political activists.” Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and Georgia House Speaker David Ralston released a statement blaming “this attack on our state” on President Biden and voting rights activist Stacey Abrams and insisting that the bill in fact expands, rather than contracts, the right to vote. Ralston said that “Stacey Abrams’ leftist lies have stolen the All-Star Game from Georgia…. But Georgia will not be bullied by socialists and their sympathizers.”
Republican politicians also piled on at the national level. Representative Buddy Carter (R-GA) tweeted that MLB was “[t]otally caving to the lies of the Left” and called for a baseball boycott. Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) called it “a cowardly boycott based on a lie.” Then Representative Jeff Duncan (R-SC) called for Congress to retaliate against MLB with a law to remove MLB’s antitrust exception. The former president urged his supporters to “boycott baseball” and the companies that do not support Georgia’s new voter suppression bill.
But journalists Nick Corasaniti and Reid J. Epstein of the New York Times today reviewed the new 98-page Georgia voting law and had one primary takeaway: “The Republican legislature and governor have made a breathtaking assertion of partisan power in elections, making absentee voting harder and creating restrictions and complications in the wake of narrow losses to Democrats.” Sixteen key provisions hamper the right to vote, especially in the urban and suburban counties that vote Democratic, or take power away from state and local election officials—like the secretary of state, who refused to throw the election to Trump in 2020—and give it to partisan legislators.
If it’s true that the Georgia law is no big deal, Democracy Docket founder and election law defender Marc Elias asked, “why are three separate Republican Party Committees spending money intervening in court to defend it—claiming that if the law is struck down it will disadvantage the [Republicans] in elections?”
MLB’s decision was actually not prompted by Stacey Abrams, who rejected calls for a boycott and urged companies not to leave the state but to stay and fight for voting rights. She tweeted that she was “disappointed” that MLB would move the All-Star Game “but proud of their stance on voting rights.”
Former House Speaker John Boehner, who presided over the House during the Republican wave of 2010, published a preview of his forthcoming book that makes some sense of the Republican attempt to divert attention to Abrams. He says that the rise of the internet meant that by 2010, Republican lawmakers were taking their orders from internet media websites and the Fox News Channel, their only aim to keep viewers engaged and cash flowing.
The Republican focus on media, rather than policy, has mushroomed until lawmakers are now reduced to talking about Dr. Seuss and the Potato Head clan rather than answering the needs of voters, with no policy besides “owning the libs.”
And now they are trying to pin the decisions of MLB on the “socialist” Stacey Abrams, a voting-rights advocate, rather than on the Georgia Republican legislature’s open attempt to undermine democracy.
