I don’t wanna spend too much time on this 2day but I absolutely want to try and make a full post about this theory at a later time. So if I come off weird it’s cuz I’m tired hsbcrvg, I’m gonna forget if I don’t write it out now tho.

I’m also not at all an expert, just autistic 😎. To quote Raph, “I’m not a scientist but this is absolutely your guilt glands, excreting guiltzimes into your guiltis system☝️😌.”

But basically I, as I’ve said before, am now incredulously familiar with the different Rise turtle species’ anatomy. And over the last month or two I’m becoming increasingly sure of the theory that they aren’t just blood related through Lou Jitsu, but have a little of each others turtle DNA too.

⭐️The biggest undeniable signifier of this is Donnie’s plastron and bridge. It’s of course important that there’s a lot that doesn’t have to be accurate in a stylised completely fictional show like Rise, and especially with mutants.

But man it’s a pretty big plot hole to have this character who’s design and character (as well as story at times) be known as having a softshell because of his species, but give him these key/obvious turtle attributes that said species definitely doesn’t have, he certainly didn’t get a hard and external plastron + bridge from his human side. /nm /gen

Turtles have tons of bones inside their bodies like most animals do, but the shell, bridge and plastron bones are more external, and covered scutes. The skin connects around the two gaps in the front and back.

Softshells still have a hard plate with their spinal cord and [shorter] ribs, but it’s under a leathery “shell” of skin, and they don’t have a solid bridge connection like other turtles. Their bones are absolutely wack bro /pos. Their plastron and the closest thing they have to a bridge are still equivalent to our front ribs, but even more so in that they’re still behind skin [but I don’t think muscle?], and that skin more or less is around their entire body [kind of].

[it’s worth mentioning that in other species they do have lots of nerves and stuff in their shells, they ARE still sensitive, though most likely less. Not too relevant to this but I feel like people have the assumption that their shells are super numb or they can’t feel stuff touching them. They love those shell brushes yo!]

Then there may be extra little details that COULD support this theory as well.

-Donnie being seen going inside his shell twice, once in the lair games and then once in the purple jacket (in the basket of Aprils bike). I’ve always preferred to retcon these, as Softshells cannot go inside their shells at all. But with a harder plastron and bridge ‘outside’ of his skin that connects to where his shell sticks out, it isn’t as impossible as a normal softshell, and of course Mikey and Leo absolutely can and have completely gone in their shells. [tba examples?]

Also snapping turts can’t go inside theirs either, though considering how massive Raph’s limbs are he probably can’t even with Mike and Lee’s DNA influence, not that it’s realistic for any of the ninja turtles to be able to go in their shells LOL.

-Donnie looking like he has small spines/spikes across his spine, even though Spiny softshells don’t have any there, but rather at the top lip of their softshell. Some do on occasion have their spine make bumps visible on their ‘shell’.

Rise, like many 2D handrawn animated things, has quite a few design inconsistencies, but you can usually surmise the most common version of something once you collect enough references. Though ngl I’ve seen a lot of both spiny looking bumps and just wobbly bumps, some with no bumps. But my point is this could be a minor feature from Raph’s Alligator Snapper DNA, unlikely but worth mentioning, plus super cute. [tba example images]

-Raph’s fear stink? I need to do more research on this, but I know that Softshells are actually known to release an odor to scare off others, if I’m remembering correctly. [tba info?]

-Mikey’s shell patterns, when studying Red-eared slider shells, I was so stoked to see the inspiration of Leo’s shell markings, and it looked like Mikey’s also matched his species. That is, until I realised Mike matched with COMMON/EASTERN box turtle shells. Ornate box turtles almost always have these radiating stripes. I’ve personally made my own kind of in between for how I draw him, but it made me realise how maybe it was influenced by Leo’s slider DNA? [tba example images]

-The same Plastron + Bridge argument as Donnie but with Raph. Alligator Snappers def have em, but they cover waaaay less than most turtles do, their bridges are very narrow and their plastron don’t even stick out, or are that thick, it’s pretty interesting. [tba example images]

I get some people raise an eyebrow on how you write Bowser in this au but can I just say hes gotta be one of my favorite Bowsers out there!! ❤

Like no shade to other Bowsers but he's such an interesting and complex character to me I want to learn more about him in this au!

Like it's strange & interesting to me how he can neglect to raise his own imperfect creations yet be willing to take in other imperfect & abandoned koopalings, It makes me wonder about whether it was him being naive to parenthood in his younger years as well as seeing his own imperfections in them.

I actually like him doing poorly at being a parent the first time around but doing great with most of the next set of kids since these things do happen in life and it makes me want to know more about his relationships with not only his kids but their relationships with each other and how it effects everyone, like I'm curious about Bowser's mindset and what he regrets in his life and if he ever considers trying to mend broken family relationships with his older kids, I'm also very curious about how Luigi handles this info and if he calls him out on some things later on when he kinda has the right to do so as a queen and step parent

I don't dislike other Bowser interpretations (heck I envy how simple or even more complex others make his character). However thank you!

I've also shared a few times that just because I've written a morally grey or black character, doesn't mean they're terrible overall or stay that way. It gets frustrating having to explain this over and over again especially when the version in my au gets compared to someone's personal version of him or another au. I have nothing against either.

Kamek is a nice father figure, but he wanted company he could tend to. He was also naive in thinking about how fatherhood worked and Kamek spoiled him, so no wasn't really an answer he would take.

I genuinely found canon Bowser's treatment of different types of the younger koopalings over the years interesting. He praises Junior a lot and most of the others are an after thought (just like how Nintendo treats them...)

I know 10 is a lot of children for him (I've been told this before), but he's 34 almost 35 in my au. He has most definitely will and has fucked up whether it be with his children or his relationships with others.

He’s a pretty complex character because at first you would’ve guessed he’s just a serial killer like any other villain characters but the second you’d catch on, he’ll act like an innocent prick

Overall, he likes causing chaos between two opposing sides and sometimes prefers being a spectator

Q&As (more questions can be added):

1. How do you address Eike if he’s made up of two people? Do we call him a ‘he’ or a ‘they’?

Answer: His pronouns are he/him since Elijah is mostly the one in control as Eike (he also picked up that name to hide his identity) also because Emir’s half decapitated face is unconscious in Elijah’s control so he won’t be able to control everything for the time being unless Elijah wakes him up and lets him have control but atp Emir’s looking like he’s gonna be ‘dead’ for awhile.

2. Who is the parasite and how does it work?

Answer: Elijah, to be more specific, that’s his ability. He can control someone’s body by merging his blood with someone else’s. As long as that person he’s targeting has the same blood type as him, which is O, or else he’ll be dead in an instant. Mixing his blood with a different blood type is like feeling drenched up acid to him.

3. If Eike’s occupation is being a detective, wouldn’t his co-workers be suspicious of his conditions to his face?

Answer: His face is usually covered up with his hair and he only uncovers it when he’s alone so don’t worry 👌

4. How did he managed to get a certified occupation with the way he looks??

Answer: In the beginning, they picked him up in the alleyway beside a garbage bin during an investigation. At first he was gonna be placed in an orphanage as a joke until he told them his age and “dream” which was to become a detective. They doubted him at first based from the way he presents himself until during another investigation (someone had to keep watch on him so they suggested on bringing him on work lol) and was surprised on how well-observant he was throughout. So there, he was immediately hired and he's still wearing that outfit despite being told to wear something formal.

5. How did you come up with a character like Eike?

Answer: After listing my ocs, I noticed that I never had a neutral character before so there, I started coming up with a few concepts. He was supposed to have elf ears but that small detail is scratched from my sheet because it’s useless. It took me half an hour to think about it because I wanted this character to have a chaotic appearance and personality but still complex. I decided that the mix of black and pink would suit him. I thought of black and white at first but nah, I don’t think I’ve seen any characters with the mix of black and pink that much before so I chose those color palettes.

6. If he dislikes any items involving time, why does he have a pocket watch?

Answer: He’s wearing it around his neck as a spiteful way towards Fumihiko for treating him like shit for 3 years so he stole it from him (and a very useful thing at that because the pocket watch he’s holding onto right now is someone else’s life so if he ever breaks it, that someone will die, though, he doesn’t know it yet)

7. What are the backstories of Elijah’s and Emir’s?

how do you feel about the khaos reigns announcement because i’m SO STOKED for animalities coming back, from the trailer it appears kenshi is a wolf but nothing on johnny yet, i can’t stop brainstorming what he might be

im.. actually pretty excited for khaos reigns 😅 ive heard a lot of ppl complaining but i just dont think ive seen enough to really speak on the quality of it-

im super stoked for animalities, loved seeing what we're all assuming is wolf kenshi, im hoping johnny has smth fun since i play him the most, but i also would love if it was smth a little silly... kangaroo, rabbit/hare, cheetah, rat- smth like that i would really love 😌

i will say one of the main reasons i love mk and it's expansions is bc of how fun and kind of goofy things are... like it has ninjas, futuristic prosthetics/technology, ancient magic and new magic, different realms and species, blood feuds and coups and, of course, the mortal kombat tournament-

and all of that makes for goofy scenarios where you have situations like:

- "hollywood actor gets his mansion robbed by soon-to-be-blind swordsman from the yakuza who is there for his ancestral sword"

or

- "the two most evil people in outworld are actually deeply in love and their relationship is disturbingly sweet with their unreal devotion and loyalty, even as they beat the shit out of some kid with no mom"

or even

- "some evil sorcerer has a weird kiddy pool in his hide out in HELL to turn people into undead twisted versions of themselves and act as his little minions so he can conquer the realms alongside Basically Satan"

like... mk is so unserious to me and that's part of why i love it so much- it's all so fucking absurd and it brings me immense joy 💖

hello it is time for a VERY niche post. join me for... SHL characters as SNAKES!!!!! i tried to find snakes that naturally occur in china or near china, as a terrible added parameter—there's a TON of snakes in china, but i just don't know many so it's terrible bc it added a lot of work for me lol. but i've learned things! and found some cool snakes! so! let's go. pictures of snakes ahead, if that's not your thing, feel free to peace out.

Wen Kexing - Sinomicrurus macclellandi a coral snake! just a nice boy you know? just a nice, extremely venemous boy with dramatic red coloration. shamless plug for my fic where wkx turns into This Snake.

Zhou Zishu - Bungarus multicinctus look at this lovely unassuming snake. got some goth-y drama but overall not too bad, right? one of the most venomous land snakes in the world 😌 (also. he and wkx match but like in a complimentary way.)

Zhang Chengling - Pareas margaritophorus the first thing wikipedia says about this snake is that it is small and harmless. for the first time so far, i am not trying to mislead you. just a little snek boi!!!!!! cute!!!!!! I Want To Hold And Protect Him

Gu Xiang - Fowlea piscator look i'm gonna be honest. there are not a lot of snakes that are even REMOTELY purple but this one has a little purple whip tongue! also, not venemous but (if it's anything like water snakes in the US) kind of an asshole. apparently pretends to be a cobra. look at her go.

Cao Weining - Coelognathus radiatus this snake has no thoughts in its head. look at it. i don't mean as a species i mean This One. That's cwn. just sitting there doing a blep. no venom, apparently a defensive sort of dude. cool colors tho!

Luo Fumeng - Calliophis bivirgatus a different kind of coral snake! i've gone a bit further outside of china for this one but LOOK at how gorgeous it is. how could i not let lfm be this glamorous. also i like the idea that she's a different genus of snake than wkx but still a (venemous) coral snake.

Liu Qianqiao - Elaphe taeniura gonna be honest here, the common name of this snake in english is the beauty snake (or ratsnake), so i didn't think too much farther. there's a ton of different color morphs of it. look at it, the elegance! she's beauty she's grace she'll constrict you (if you are a small mammal)!

Xie Wang - Bungarus fasciatus this is a different krait! zzs has MANY bands, xw just has bands. a little brighter colored and more extra than zzs, sliiiightly less deadly, still can very definitely kill you. LOOK at that warning coloration. if i was to pick two characters to DEFINITELY have warning coloration, it WOULD be wkx and xw.

Du Pusa - Euprepiophis mandarinus this is NOT my best work, but i just thought this snake was really pretty and so i was determined to include it somehow. hence: dps. they are ~secretive~ apparently. also. again. Look At It

Ye Baiyi - Python bivittatus BIG BOY!!!! ALMOST THE BIGGEST BOY!!!!! does occur in white color morphs in captivity (and like, i guess presumably in the wild? at one point? but i have to imagine that's like. not so much a thing anymore.) also, did i pick the picture that looks the most like a cryptid? of course i did, it's yby. he doesn't want his picture taken. he doesn't want you to know he exists even. leave him alone. where he belongs in his natural habitat.

Han Ying - Lycodon septentrionalis a shiny pretty boy. a shiny pretty boy who looks very much like a many-banded krait, in fact. however, they're not venemous. hy just looks like zzs. again: LOOK AT THIS GOOD SNEK.

Here are my main characters of my story ”Key of Dalntalai”. The story is this kind of sci fi/fantasy themed and traveling to another planets possibly. Everything in this story is in concept stage since i can’t settle to one idea. I’m working on the fauna and flora in these worlds, but i’m not smart enough to always have a reason for certain desings, so some of them might look like something because i think they look cool.

Alexandra is the main character in this story currently and at the moment all i can say that she is a magical being who has escaped from a bad organization and some bad people. Alexandras magic leans more to a elemental based magic and her specialty is water magic. She also can create corals possibly, but i don’t know if i will keep that idea. Alex is like 17 years old and acts like a little brat sometimes, she gets angry easily often and dosen’t always express how she feels like she should, but rather she kinda bottles her emotions and then lashes out uninteoninally. I think she would later realize maybe that she did something wrong and apologize for what she did or said. Alex can be nice and cares about the people close to her.

Alexandra is curious about learning new things and loves collecting cool or random stuff. She can also be very hyper active and has a lot of energy.

Even though i draw Alex a lot, i still like to draw Nadja the most. Nadja is a magical being called ”Woodling”, they were inspired by nymphs from greek mythology, but i’ve tried to make some things about Woodlings little different. Woodlings are born when ”mother tree” takes a root in ground and becomes a ”mother of the forest”. (I will explain some day better about woodlings, but now back to Nadja).

Nadja is basically 300 year old woodling, she has hundreds or thousands of siblings so she is used to having people around her always. Nadja has bubbly and kind personality, she rarely wants to have any confrontantion with other people. Nadja is however good at magic and well learned, after all, she has had time to learn using magic for hundreds of years.

So, before i said that woodlings are born when mother trees take root in ground, well, because of that woodlings are not able to leave the forest for a long period of time, because the tree they are born from kinda is the thing keeping them alive. They can be far from the tree for like maybe… two weeks at most? I’m still working on how Nadjas species work. Getting to my point, so Nadja needs to have her tree with her if she want’s to go around the world, or even go to another world, well there is a way for that. Woodling can make a deal with a human or other magical being where they can grant humans some magical abilities, kinda like warlock gets magic from the deals they make. When they make a deal, the person gets woodling tree and carries it inside them, spiritually? So Nadja and Nick have made a deal, Nick gets a little magic and Nadja can go to adventures and travel.

(I will someday make a proper post explaining about woodlings.)

I don’t draw Nick as often as i would like to, i just haven’t fully figured them out.

Nick is kinda like wizard/warlock, like they have studied magic, but they got elemental based magick powers from Nadja. Nick loves reading about history and magic, they are learned in space and portal magic. Nick travels a lot with Nadja to defferent places, either to study historic sights and animals, or just go sightseeing?

Nick cares a lot about Nadja and later Alex too becomes important person to them. Nick is forgiving and patient and if there is argument, they can swallow their pride and apologize first.

Nick is 19 years old and lives with their grandma in manor? Mansion? Like the grandma is somewhat rich, she has a bussiness and earn money well with it, but she’s not like super rich. She inherited the mansion from her parents, but this post is not about her.

Imagine when he finds out that the time he has set out for the two of you isn't important to you, as you are curled up with the dragon, reading to the dragon stories about Aegon The Conqueror.

Aegon takes his anger out via drinking more, he doesn't go to anyone. He just stays in bed, and drinks.

He brings you to meet Vhagar, and doesn't expect one of the oldest dragons in the world to basically roll over when you come bounding up to her and rubs at her side. "I may have snuck in a few times to meet her. I didn't want her killing me when you brought me to meet her."

Bro thinks its just you wanting to be on his good side until your missing dinners with him, or skipping your lessons on High Valyrian just to be with Vhagar.

He just joins you and brings food with him or the books to help you learn.

For real though, Emmet has always adored how Durant treats Galvantula like his colony queen. He’s always bringing her lil gifts(usually electronics or batteries) and helping her care for her eggs and young. Emmet is very aware of how the relationship dynamics of different species generally go, such as how male Druants are usually committed to their Queens, but don’t expect them to be as committed to them.

Galvantula seemed content with only Durant for the most part, even ignoring the other Galvantula Elesa has that she battles with at her gym. So Emmet was surprised when she took an interest in Ingo’s new Gliscor.

Gliscor, while not officially calcified as a bug type, does have notable bug like qualities that still puts them in the same egg group. So he knew it was theoretically possible, but it was still a surprise when Emmet saw her cozying up to Gliscor and the bat pokemon sharing his treats with her.

But they both seemed happy and Durant looked delighted to have another attendant to look after his queen, so Emmet was content to let Galvantula have her two boyfriends 😌

(Also Gliscor clearly understands how to treat baby pokemon gently and look after them judging from how he treats the sneaslets, so that was a huge draw for Galvantula. That bat is husband material.)

Not sure if you've already answered something like this, but how do you think the Nightbrothers celebrate death? What kind of beliefs do you think they would have on where spirits go afterwards (if they go anywhere)? What colours do they represent loss with? 😌

So… death studies are my jam outside of fandom, right? I feel like I might’ve mentioned that once or twice. As “hobbies” go, this is my thing: ancient and contemporary commemorative practices, mythologies surrounding death, and associated beliefs. 

When you held this question out to me, cupped in the palms of your hands, perhaps you didn’t know what you signed up for, and  I’ll try not to get too deep. But I can’t answer it without talking about the cosmovision of the Star Wars universe and its dualities, or even George Lucas’ real world “influences”, of which there are many that have been documented, and several which we’d need to speculate on to offer an informed answer.

Similarly, you can’t talk about the Nightbrothers in this context without talking about the belief systems of their oppressors, whose dominant worldview might’ve affected and traditions and beliefs brought over from Iridonia. 

You came here for a headcanon, but with regrets, you’ve opened a floodgate.

Let’s do this, shall we?

From Ancient Iridonia, to Dathomir

We know Lucas appropriated a bunch of different real-world traditions and mythologies to build the overarching Star Wars cosmovision (dualities of light and dark, the cosmic and living Force, etc.) many of them from East Asian cultures, and the dubious backstory for Dathomirian Zabrak involves a diaspora from their homeworld and their subsequent enslavement to the dominant species in place on Dathomir (Nightsisters), who already had a cosmovision of their own, and gods, and a relationship with the Force that is unlike anything else we've seen in the SW universe that has ties to both totemic and sympathetic magic, and given what we know of how they use the ichor, the Nightsisters relationship with death is very different from, let's say, the Jedi, who are very much of a mindset that through right action and applied ritual, you can come back from the afterlife in service to your lineage.

But let's start at the beginning, 'cause I went and did some poking around specifically with the intention of trying to discover what beliefs might’ve been brought over with those early Nightbrothers from Iridonia, if anything...

Nightbrothers, Commemorative Customs, and a Cosmovision

A few things ancient Iridonian Zabrak believed in, as accumulated from this reddit post (which lacks explicit references to where this information was drawn from. In their comments, they cite the Galactic Campaign Guide? I've been looking for citations and I've thus far come up empty-handed, but I'm still open to considering this stuff, esp. since OP is explicitly stating what's headcanon and what's not in their post):

To summarize, Iridonian Zabrak may have held belief in the following, with annotations:

Death Goddess Sisters (Nath and Ath) who guard the Zabrak afterlife, "The Lands of Plenty": Interesting that there's a reverence for two sisters and not the brother-sister-husband-wife partnership among death gods that we're used to (Isis and Osiris = The Daughter and Son of Mortis, for example)

A creatrix deity (Gith) who could create tons of food: We know Iridonia was an arid planet that suffered numerous wars through inter-clan fighting, so it sounds like scarcity in their day to day lives might have been a contributing factor to a cosmovision incorporating a halcyon, abundant afterlife. 

Shamans (Sang): Suggests they also had intercessors for their faith. The quote says the Shamans oversaw their rituals for marriage and funerals, but the extent of that spiritual leadership is unknown, so I can only speculate that since the Nightbrothers demonstrate such affinity for their rites of passage and proving their worth as warriors, those traditions draw from old Iridonian customs too, and that they had spiritual guides on their journey.

We also know that ancient Zabrak were tied to the Sith Empire, became their warriors, fought alongside them, accepted Sith indoctrination if they were Force-sensitive, etc. So I expect there might’ve been, at some point, some adoption of the Sith beliefs intermingling with the core values of Iridonian Zabrak (because concepts of power and dominion would likely resonate with them.) There wouldn't be, however, I don't think, a universally-accepted singular faith. I think there were probably many, as well as offshoots and various sects -- which is true of Force-sensitive practitioners and believers: in Legends at least, there are tons more than just the Jedi and Sith; some who see it as faith and others who use it as magic and others still that are recognized cults and crime syndicates. *cough* BANDO GORA *cough*

And if you remember from that episode in the Clone Wars where Yoda visits Moraband and encounters the spirits of the ancient Sith buried in the Valley of the Dark Lords, they tell him that there's nothing after life. "You will die, and be nothing." And what does that say about their outlook and ambitions, you know? If there's nothing afterwards, and the only thing that echoes in eternity is your name (like Darth Bane, for example) then the things that consume you also fuel your ambitions. There's an immediacy to it that I think is interesting. Power and fear, right? It's a twisted sort of glory.

But similarly, it's not the sort of hopeful outlook you find in cultures that have endured hardship and suffering. It doesn't wholly jive with a "lands of plenty" hopeful mentality that acknowledges that the living situation ain't great and that it'll be better in the afterlife.

The Nightsisters and the Hoodoo that They Do

Meanwhile, on Dathomir, you've got a bunch of newly minted Nightbrothers looking at the Nightsisters' tree burial practices, and you maybe find yourself in the unfortunate position one time to see a sister resurrected from the dead, and the way you see the universe and your place in it is likely gonna shift a bit.

A few things of note regarding the Nightsisters' cosmovision:

Winged Goddess and Fanged God is a concept of divinity rooted in male/female binary and plays into the overarching Star Wars "duality as giant-ass part of the cosmovision" because these deities are also representative of Light and Dark aspects of the Force; they're linked to the Gods of Mortis, who... are up to who knows what. Fighting for balance or something. The epic equivalent of the Zoroastrian struggle between celestial divinities duking it out in the cosmos to achieve dominance over the other.

The ichor = the power = the Force. Confusing to me, still, because the nature of the ichor suggests that it is neither light nor dark and how its aligned is governed by what its used for, but the Sisters get billed as Dark Side practitioners so often that I start questioning whether Lucasfilm needed to ascribe some value to them to run a 1:1 with whatever culture they "borrowed" from. It looks a lot like pop-culturized Haitian Voodoo at times with the poppet magic, and the possession, and the zombification and resurrection (but not in any way that respectfully suggests what Voodoo actually looks like.) And others, I'm looking at the architecture and seeing some serious ancient Egyptian references, and a little Nabatean too. (And if you really want to start digging deeper, let me point out the pyramids used in ancient Sith architecture for their tombs and educational academies and holocrons, or the handy-dandy sacrificial chamber beneath the tomb of Darth Bane that suggests inspiration from ancient Aztec practices of sacrifice. Yeah, they were killing Jedi down there, just saying.)

There is a hierarchy to Nightsister burial: there are tombs with giant faces carved into them inside the mountain, and there are the burial pods out on the gravethorn groves dangling like macabre Christmas ornaments stuffed with their warriors. Who are the important people buried in those tombs, and what are they buried with? Because if the girls out in the pods are buried with their weapons, you can guess at what they're taking with them into their afterlife, or their in-between place, and you know that the function they served in life is the same that they'll serve in death. I'd speculate that the clan mothers and elders are in the tombs, probably with their books and special talismans, and I would bet that the elders have a means of communicating with them through the ichor because all of this smacks of ancestral worship to boot.

Sometimes They Come Back. 👀

To your question: What do the Nightbrothers believe in with respects to death, the afterlife, and their customs?

I would propose the following, based on what we've just observed:

The cosmovision of the Nightbrothers is one that seeks to preserve the essence of the beliefs in a better afterlife brought with them from ancient Iridonia, that acknowledges their current situation on Dathomir under the rule of the Nightsisters is temporary, and that there is an understanding that while they are far from where they've come from, they will one day be returned what they've lost -- if they demonstrate those values that Zabrak have held for millennia:

Strength. Honour. And the courage to withstand even the harshest circumstances.

In the world that awaits them, they will find their kin and company in a land of abundance where the waters run clean and the skies are clear; their young are never parted from their mothers' arms, and their brothers never have to fight one another to prove themselves, unless it is to each other for their amusement.

There are no horrors there, and the dead can find their rest and know peace. There is no fear that their bodies might be desecrated, used in death as they were in life to fight for a cause that was never theirs and that they never believed in; that they gave their lives for over and over because it was called of them without question and in perfect submission.

And all those stories, whispered amongst brothers about the heroes that came before them are remembered, their names spoken aloud and with reverence, unafraid of who might overhear who might lay claim to their lineage, their brothers, their fathers, their faces. There will be no one to silence them again. None will ever be forgotten.

And in the dark hours, where lanterns were lit quietly in shaded corners with the curtains drawn, and the little effigies of those known as Brother were revered as family and clan because no one could recall who was blood kin and who was not, all were banded together with the understanding that someday soon, they would never be parted again. Prayers are offered now to the old Sisters at the Gates to keep their dead, but also to the new gods -- because they've seen the Fanged God walking their dreams, and the brothers know his strength. It's as real as the Force that binds them. He's a living thing that makes the shadows breathe when they take nightblossom or mushling seed to induce visions.

Someday soon, there would be no need to whisper, or to pile stones on the cairns where they put their dead in the ground as if to hide the lives that had been taken: No markers. No memorials. No names etched into stones in hydratis acid and turned over so that the Nightsisters might know who was buried there as if they could exploit them. That's why they chose to make cairns and barrows for the brothers, you see: because when you put heavy things on top of the bodies, they can't rise to the call of the witches' magic. They stay where you put them.

And as for the colours of the dead, there is only one: white for the palest star above. A marker for the way home in all that dark.
