Thinking about how time lord culture would change post war, because a lot of the traditions are upheld by the houses (and possibly not even properly recorded in the matrix) and those probably didn’t do all that well in terms of making it through the war. Like if the cities with actual defenses were largely destroyed I can’t imagine most of the houses made it out okay, if they made it out at all. And so many time lords were killed, the ones keeping the traditions of their houses and chapters alive were certainly no exception. What traditions are just lost forever, or barely remembered by the people who experienced them pre war, but never actually learned the details of them because that was the job of the housekeeper or the kithriarch. And what about the outlanders and the other non time lords, their minds didn’t get recorded into the matrix, that’s for time lords (though I doubt the were able to keep up with time lord deaths in that sense either), how much knowledge and culture from them was lost because of the war

Narvin’s mood was not helped by the weather. Yes, weather, because this Gallifrey for all their fancy weapons and talk of science, had not only neglected time travel but had also failed to build the cyberglass bubble that encompassed cities back home. So, when it rained, the streets ran with water and his shoes were wet and his hair dripped in his face. And, it turned out, the cold and damp made him ache in places that had been little more than background noise since he became Coordinator and stopped traveling off-world so much.

this was the basis of one of my posts about little amy so long ago. a hypothetical s5 where the master sticks with the doctor after he regenerates. but like can we talk about how insane that dynamic between him and amelia, the literal eight year old, would be. look at me. one of the defining things of eleven's run is that the first face he saw was amy's. seared onto his hearts!!! now, imagine that happens in a world where the master did everything right to be that person, and it was still amy. the tardis crashed, and the doctor went one way and the master went the other, and by the time the master drags himself soaking wet out of what was the swimming pool and into amelia's garden, the doctor is already having dinner with some random human child.

things simm!master is not above: being a little bitch to amy about this. yes, even when she's eight. (amelia pond with her stories about her magical raggedy doctor!! ...and the trash rat who crawled out of his time machine after him and threatened to eat her. wait okay hold on i know im getting distracted here but aslkjdalkjsd rory who amy makes dress up as the doctor vs mels who insists on dressing up as the master because she craves violence and an excuse to bite people.)

ANYWAY. god. eleven who is this bottomless well of grief and rage. and the master who is so much like him in this incarnation. silly goofy guys who burn too bright, burn up everything and everyone around them. what is simm!master if not a version of eleven untempered by kindness. i wonder what the master would have to say about a version of the doctor who is aware of how scared people are of him and uses it to his advantage. who scares the rest of the universe so much that they try to lock him away and kill him and do anything they can to get rid of him. when they lock the doctor up in the pandorica, does the master give him the final shove into the chair or is he a few feet away, just barely restrained, impotently snapping and snarling to prevent this?

but never looking at it directly, right? neither of them would be able to. not at what's between them, not at what came before. if you don't talk about that time you both saved each other, then maybe you can pretend it didn't happen.

i think the master would make eleven worse, no doubt about it. i think eleven might just make the master a little better, and he'd hate that but that wouldn't stop it from happening. they might find some sort of equilibrium, just this once, a little willing to bend in the aftermath of the events of the end of time. that part of the master that will be missy one day wakes up. the part of the doctor that was once the time lord victorious gets a last glorious breath. they can have that, together.

okay. okay. one last thing. gets ill thinking about eleven who is so physically affectionate being that way with the master. with mr 'im going to kiss my wife i married for political gain like im starving'. with mr 'time lord telepathy does not require physical contact but if we don't touch foreheads right now ill die'. with mr 'fuck u but also im gonna die in your arms, don't leave or let me go before everything falls quiet.' thinks about eleven touching him and hugging him and kissing him and- thinks about the master recoiling from it, hackles raised, or shoving the doctor away when he does. thinks about the doctor not stopping. thinks about the master getting accustomed to his touch, taking it greedily. (thinks about missy kissing the doctor to greet him later.)

characters like the Magus and the Abbot in Forgotten Lives are so interesting beause they imply that either the Master (and/or the Monk??) also have hidden past incarnations or that every few hundred years the Time Lords accidentally produce a handful of bitchy renegades who wind up as the Doctor's enemies and idk which idea i like more

Do you miss home at all?

Because sometimes I wish I could go back to days when Gallifrey was around. But no the Council of Time Lords had to put that stuff into place to make it so we couldn't and make us live parallel time lines to Gallifrey.

I get it was so bad Time Lords couldn't come back after being banished or whatever... But now I can't see home again after the Time War. :'(

I... yeah. Yeah I do. Sure, the High Council could be stuffy, but Gallifrey was home. I miss Otherstide, watching the flutterwings fly by from my House, the sense of familiarity amongst my cousins. I even miss the buzz from all the work in Arcadia. I know the Time Lock was for a good reason, but I really want to see House Arpexia again.

I can't stop thinking about the Doctor's reaction at the end of "Dot and Bubble." That penny drop moment, the stunned laughter followed by the scream of futile anguish followed by the silent tears. Fantastically played by Ncuti Gatwa, and for me, it's a reaction that absolutely makes sense for this situation and this Doctor.

First of all, of course the Doctor wants to save them and gets desperate when they won't let him. Of course he does--that's just who the Doctor is. We've seen them save vile, self-serving humans before, we've seen them offer Sycorax and Rachnoss and Daleks a last chance. No matter how these people have treated him or what they think of him, he still wants to be able to save them.

I keep thinking about how his laughter gives way to a scream. That's very fitting for his Doctor in particular. For all of Fourteen's "rehab," it's clear that Fifteen still has his issues, and I've seen them in the moments where he shouldn't be smiling. The way he briskly tells Ruby that Gallifrey is gone, the way he seems to shrug off not knowing whether Susan was killed with the rest of the Time Lords. It makes a lot of sense to me that he would laugh before he would scream.

Then too, there's the laughter being in part due to his surprise. The Doctor knows they've been Black before, because Thirteen met the Fugitive Doctor and saw the hints of their pre-One past in the Matrix, but he doesn't have those actual memories of the experience of being Black. He's not used to walking around in this skin, with this face. I'm sure he noticed how rude and distrustful Lindy was to him, but he didn't catch why. Not until the end. And it's so dumb and hateful and pointless and absurd, and she's going to die because of it, so in that very first moment, what can he do but laugh?

Finally, I've also been thinking about Ruby crying for him, wanting to comfort the Doctor but knowing she can't make it better. Millie Gibson does a beautiful job as well, capturing Ruby's reaction to a tee without drawing focus from Ncuti's powerhouse performance.

Technically, she didn’t know for sure that he was a renegade, but it seemed a reasonable assumption.

Random headcanon I came up with early this morning, because I’ve been thinking about Gallifreyan language recently:

The reason why so many Time Lord things are decorated with circular Gallifreyan, often too impractically to actually be read (eg. on the Moment), is because it’s a cultural touchstone that remains from pre-/early-Pythian Gallifrey’s use of magical runes and sigils.

Presumably it was more typically Old High Gallifreyan used in that time (though The Timeless Children does seemingly confirm circular Gallifreyan existed at least as far back as Rassilon's time, if not earlier), however. Twelve describes it as ‘the language of the Pythia’ in The Lost Magic, and as Eleven says in The Time of Angels:

ELEVEN: There were days, there were many days, these words could burn stars and raise up empires, and topple gods.

This is obviously very reminescent of the Carrionites' (themselves from the Dark Times too) "word-based science" from The Shakespeare Code:

MARTHA: What did you do? TEN: I named her. The power of a name. That's old magic. MARTHA: But there's no such thing as magic. TEN: Well, it's just a different sort of science. You lot, you chose mathematics. Given the right string of numbers, the right equation, you can split the atom. Carrionites use words instead.

In other words, while they probably weren't actually intended as such and may have their own specific meaning, whether they be poetry, namesakes, histories, instructions, whatever... these are basically protective wards:

As a side note - if they actually are kind-of intended as a form of protection, perhaps this is why we were only introduced to Circular Gallifreyan in New Who, despite it seemingly existing through Gallifreyan history. Because it was retroactively inserted into Gallifreyan culture as a form of defense during the War in Heaven / Last Great Time War?

Regardless, this also opens up questions how many other Time Lord traditions are holdovers from the Dark Times.

For example, who's to say that the renegade naming tradition didn't begin as a form of protection from hexes - either from hostile forces in the pre-anchoring universe, or from oppressive magic-users back on the homeworld? This may also be connected to the change in Gallifreyan name format before and after the Intuitive Revelation (eg. ancestral -sti and -sor names), though shifting power structures, gender roles etc. presumably played a role too.

Heck, is this one reason why Gallifrey's own name has changed over its history? From Jewel to Gallifrey in Rassilon's time to try and protect it from vengeful Pythian curses. From Gallifrey to just 'the Homeworld' in the War to protect it from new rituals of alternative histories and paradox?

so sorry to keep going on about this but the doctor as a parent is truly one of my favorite concepts (not cause I think they’d be good at it, don’t worry, I’m not that delusional) so!

fifteen was lying when he said he hasn’t had kids yet and that is the only conclusion I can draw. don’t know if it’s to protect their identities or just to fuck with kate but these are some of my favorite moments of vulnerability that the doctor has ever shown and, while it would be totally in character for twelve to say that last line just to freak clara out a bit, none of those other lines strike me as potential lies.

solely from looking these scenes together (and then also the fact that he totally kidnapped susan) my headcanon/infereence has always been that the doctor had an estranged relationship with his kid/s who were then killed in the time war (perhaps pre-moment? since I don’t know if I could believe the master capable of killing the doctors children in the post-timeless child reveal destruction of gallifrey)
