#or lung disease

Text
I was recently diagnosed with "mild COPD". That's what the doctor called it, but then I was called back in cause my alpha-one tests results came back abnormal. That is not a good thing, it turns out. When your alpha-ones are abnormal it means that at best you're a carrier for lung disease or cancer, and at worst you have lung disease or cancer. So we ran more tests and I got a call from the doctors' office saying they wanted to go over those tests.
That is not good news.
You ever hear the phrase no news is good news? Well, that's almost always applied to medical testing. So the fact that I'm being called in so my doctor can go over my test results is probably not good fucking news.
Trying really hard not to freak out.

Today is lung health day. Heads up: I have one lung. If you smoke around me, I'll get pissy. Yes, this includes weed. Yes, this includes vapes.
Please don't smoke near the entrances to buildings, in bus stops, or anywhere else people will get stuck breathing in your smoke. It can be physically damaging and it's really quite scary when you can't breathe, even for a few seconds.

Reminder to get your COVID booster when they're available. I kept putting off my next dose because of my schedule, and I've been out with COVID for eight days now.
Posting the symptoms I had to inform others as COVID is constantly evolving:
Day 1 (3 or 4 days after exposure): started as a feeling of "imminent sickness" in the back of my throat. I otherwise felt 100%.
Day 2: Extremely tired. Congestion. Limited all contact.
Day 3: 101 Fever. Congestion. Extremely tired. Couldn't make it through lecturing my class (remotely). Began medicating with Theraflu (acetaminophen). Tested positive for COVID with the fastest and clearest positive test I've ever seen.
Day 4: Fever between 99 and 101.5. Cancelled all activity. Spent all day in bed. Extreme congestion. Extreme aches & chills at night. This day was absolutely miserable. My friend brought me soup. I cried about it. Continued with Theraflu. Considered going to the ER due to severity of symptoms.
Day 5: Intermittent low-grade fever at 99.8. Congestion continued, coughing and sneezing began.
Day 6: Fever cleared. Coughing & sneezing intensified. Tested again as per CDC recommendations: still a strong positive. Began taking Robitussin (cough syrup only, no acetaminophen).
Day 7: Coughing worsened significantly. Lots of liquids, lots of Robitussin.
Day 8: Today! No fever, no cough, some slight congestion remains. Once again tested positive for COVID-- with a weaker positive this time! I expect I'll be back to normal by day 10, but... trust me, if you're going to get your "booster" through a needle or ten days of this, choose the booster! As a reminder, you can order up to 4 free COVID tests at the end of September through HHS.gov!

I'd like to see how your smoker's heart reacts after an out door run!
Yes I should try to do that. But at rest, only with the effect of the nicotine, you can already see that it beats fast. I'm a little bit afraid about the idea of stress it too hard with training

Because I’ve worked for my current org for a couple of years now and I’m nosy about the work my colleagues do, I knew that when we get calls from people who have recently lost a loved one, they often want someone to talk to as much as they want someone to help them with practical matters. Usually a colleague handles those calls because he runs the memorial program, but he’s on a fundraising trip, so I said I’d cover his desk, metaphorically, while he was away.
So I had my first grieving-partner call today.
He called to set up the memorial page for his wife, but we ended up chatting for about 20 minutes, or rather he spoke a lot and I mostly listened. I’m not the most empathetic person in the world, but when someone is that fresh from grief and talking to a stranger they don’t usually want much more than sympathetic silence in any case.
He just wanted to tell me about his wife, about how interesting and accomplished she was and how she died, and that he was glad their children got to say goodbye. He kept apologizing for welling up when he spoke, and I think genuinely it was helpful for him to hear from me that it was fine and natural to cry, and that I’d be on the phone with him for as long as needed. They were married for sixty-one years and she died less than a week ago, so fuck, I’d cry too. I wouldn’t be able to make a phone call for the crying, probably.
I took his info and let him know we’d track donations and send him updates, subtly made sure he had someone else there with him (”So are your kids still in town?”  “Yeah, they’re staying here with me.”) and eventually he talked himself out and we ended the call.
When you work in a job where death is nearly always tangential, you develop a certain thickness of skin, but I’m glad I don’t normally work in the memorial program. I don’t know if I could take calls like that on a weekly basis. I’m fine, I’m not fucked up over it or anything -- it actually felt good to help someone out like that -- but it’s definitely a real pause in the day.
Anyway, life is short and uncertain, so tell your loved ones you love them.

my favorite thing about writing sskk fics is having a moment of awkwardness and then adding "Akutagawa coughed."

akutagawa does not text. he writes letters.
he often writes to gin because they can't see each other most of the time. the letters are not long but he's very tender in them. in every single one he tells her that he loves her. he has a hard time saying it in person.
gin re-reads them when she knows he's away on a dangerous mission. she even carries one with her at all times instead of a picture.
she read them again the night she asked akutagawa to promise he'd keep himself safe after he announced he was departing on dazai's request. his lack of a reply told gin everything she needed to know.
to quell the overwhelming hurt she picked up one of his letters. imagined it was him saying the words to her out loud, there with her but in a place completely different. both leading a completely different life. one where tomorrow was promised and they were eagerly discussing what future awaited them. both smiling.
she tried not to think of her brother taking his final breath, saying a silent goodbye to her. reminiscing on their time together. thinking of her one last time before his mind gave in to complete darkness.
