ngl i fucking hate most conversations around “socialization” bc there’s like three ways it goes: 1. they assert that all trans people were socialized as whatever gender they were assigned at birth with no nuance or exception, 2. they assert that all trans people were socialized as whatever binary gender they most closely relate to, or 3. they assert that all trans people were “socialized trans.” and like. idk how to get it through y’all’s heads that socialization is a wildly fickle and individual experience.
i am autistic. i am also a trans man. i was socialized female. the mask i developed, the social rules i was given to follow, they were for women. the way i learned to speak, to interact with others, the way my life was supposed to go, it was based on how a woman should sound, should look, should feel, should act, should live. i didn’t realize i was some flavor of trans until i was in my mid 20’s, and didn’t realize i was a trans man until i was 28. i’m only 7 months on t and still do not pass. there is literally no planet on which i was “socialized male.” i was also not “socialized trans” because i didn’t even know being trans was an option until well into adulthood. i was given no other option than to conform to gender norms, so i didn’t spend my youth and teen years being bullied for being gender non conforming because i quite literally was just not allowed to be gender non conforming. when people insist i wasn’t socialized female, it erases the trauma i experienced from growing up with such strict gender roles, it ignores the fact that i have had to put in active effort as an autistic adult to start the process of unmasking (which is exhausting and traumatizing) before i can even begin to learn a “male mask” that will be safer in public if i start to pass. it ignores everything about my individual life and boils me down to my genitals, which i could have sworn we didn’t like when ppl did.
does that mean that everyone’s experience has to be exactly like mine? fuck no. there are plenty of trans people who come out very young and do get to grow up presenting as their actual gender and therefore are “socialized” as that gender. there are plenty of trans people who have always been gender non conforming and therefore experienced a lot of backlash that gender conforming cis people of the same assigned gender at birth wouldn’t have. there are as many trans experiences as there are trans people. and this doesn’t even begin to take into account things like race or ethnicity or fatness (hoo boy did that affect gender shit for me) or disability or any other kinds of intersections of identity.
basically, we have got to stop acting like there is a way to determine what a trans person’s experience has been based on nothing but their assigned gender at birth or gender identity.

on media literacy, shipping, and Ted Lasso...
This post was helpful to learn Hannah's more nuanced thoughts about Ted & Rebecca. I put the quotes in a word doc for people who can't see the words.
---
The T&R discourse is all over the place and I'm realizing that there needs to be a hard distinction between:
1) Ted & Rebecca as endgame (profess mutual romantic love, live happily ever after), and
2) Ted feeling romantic love for Rebecca and that truth is made clear to the audience through the writing, Rebecca's feelings are ambiguous-soulmate, and the characters are not necessarily endgame.
I had hoped for option 1. I reasonably thought the red bottom shoes were the clearest sign that Rebecca was going to Kansas, and I think the writers intended for me to think that. But the show also has a clear thread of melancholy and I wouldn't have been surprised if endgame was not in the cards. (I was also haunted by the reference to Once in the Christmas episode...)
So, as co-creator, Brendan Hunt, says, there was no enthusiasm in the writers' room for option 1. But option 2 is right there. Instead of the ambiguous ending that created feelings of confusion and being baited, I wish they had let the reasons for the heartbreak be clearer. Let the audience inside a little more so that the signs could maintain their narrative power and promise. In any other show that wasn't organized like a tight three-season arc that's filled with callbacks and parallels and signs, then ambiguity could be fine. But the way Ted Lasso is uniquely written, clear payoff on the central romantic arc was always going to be crucial and total ambiguity was always going to feel like a set up.
The anti-shippers who argue that there were no narrative signs towards a possible romance are dead wrong, but I agree with them that there was very little explicit romantic heat between Ted and Rebecca throughout the show. (I can't think of any except maybe Ted's "body language" during the gala and apology embraces.) I was hoping the story would get there given the signs and the narrative arc, but it never happened. So we're arguing about "media literacy" using different evidence, and I believe that signs are the stronger evidence given their specificity. We can all see that Ted Lasso is baking cookies so he can give them to Rebecca Welton every damn day, and I think most people can agree that that's at least peculiar. These signs of peculiar behavior and symbols piled up over three years, defining a clear likelihood of a romance in the works. But the case about heat is more subjective, a feel.
I have a friend who is a very respectful anti lolol. I encouraged her to watch the show and, when Ted found the matchbook in his pocket, she texted me "👀", even though she still didn't want it to happen. We had different hopes for the story outcome, but having "media literacy" is literally our jobs 😂 and she absolutely agrees the signs for romance were there and affirms the reasons the shippers are upset. The only difference between us was that, as a devotee to the TL writing approach, I became invested in the signs, and figured the heat would come when it came.
So when it ended, I had two distinct feelings. As a shipper, I was disappointed that option 1 did not come to pass. (ETA: Here's a great article breaking down the reasons for that.) But as a lover of the art of television, I felt a legitimate sense of loss that option 2 also did not come to pass, meaning the narrative signs were never acknowledged, they were just dropped like they didn't mean anything. Signs sometimes not being signs after all is life, sure, but tv shows aren't a realistic representation of life, they are an art form. The abrupt abandonment of their unique approach to writing created unnecessary turmoil in the fandom. This would have been bad enough, but then Brendan (and Hannah a bit as well) unhelpfully poured gas over it 🙄 by refusing to seriously contend with the show's narrative method and, instead, implied shippers (largely women) were making things up. But turns out that shippers are fucking smart and we took that shit seriously, look no further than the detailed gif sets on the tumblr tedbecca tag. Their comments broke trust between the storytellers and their very captive audience (including some media literate non-shippers). Their repeated "soulmates can be platonic" explanation was never in debate, it was always what we were seeing on the screen, the storytelling itself.
So, I'm sad that the project of it all played out the way it did. There's still a part of me that thinks maybe it will come back around someday so that the story can pay off the narrative debts it created, "thunder and lightening," daily homemade biscuits, etc. But it's hard for me to imagine I'd want to come back to the story whether or not that happens. Re-watches have also lost something special.
Maybe with time... 💜

OK so having slept after finishing the last graduate with no idea how the golden enclaves starts (spoilers for the first/speculation about the latter):
I can see three general possible ways things might go from here.
One, the most straightforward narratively from the way TLG ended: El gets shoved through the portal, Orion gets shut into a school that's about to eat itself, Orion gets to have his epic ultra boss fight until he wins or gets eaten or dies in the void or goes mad in the void, we'll never find out which. Presumably El will have a lot of distress over this.
Downsides: does not offer clear direction for what actually happens in the entire final 1/3 of the trilogy (that's more the sort of thing you have at the end of a story), doesn't really explain El's mum's warning, if we can trust El that her mum wouldn't give that warning for avoiding pain alone. (Unless El is pregnant and the warning related to that. But damn, El's mum warning her about getting pregnant while in the Scholomance would have some really weird implications for their relationship. It's not unusual for a woman who got pregnant young to not want her daughter to do the same, but...I have trouble seeing El's mum specifically addressing that concern in that way. Especially since it's not like Orion was the only boy in school. Except maybe if there's something weird about the pregnancy due to the circumstances, but I'm hoping we're not going in a magical/cursed/supernaturally very scary pregnancy direction.)
Two, El finds a way to either keep herself from getting thrown out of the portal -- finding something to literally or magically grab onto -- or somehow manages to get back in right after. The door closes, and they're both trapped in the void with a bunch of mals. In an exploding school. I actually really like this idea? It might get very surreal for a bit. But it also might mean that there was a reason the school was rewarding El for learning so much about the golden sutras while still in school -- and the school was pushing her to do that, that double independent study -- when El was fully aware that the sensible thing to do was to focus on survival for now and the sutras after graduation.
Especially since, while the phase spell was used near the end of A Deadly Education to patch up the hole in the walls, as far as I can tell the sutras weren't even slightly used after New Year's. El used the Mandarin (I assume, for some reason it was all "Mandarin" and "Shanghaiese" in book 1 and then all of a sudden "Chinese" in book 2? Kind of hoping that's a different editions issue because why would you do that??? Like I can understand simplifying things, but pick one or the other and definitely don't go from the more subtle/nuanced approach to the dumbed down one, that's just wrong) that she was picking up mostly to speak with the freshmen more than she used the Sutras in the last half of the year. Including that plot hook where she was getting really excited about the most recent spell she was on and then we never found out what it was because then she had to hurry to breakfast and then that was it for classes for the rest of the year.
Anyways. Advantage: maybe use the sutras to build new enclave from the shattered remnants of the exploding school in the void? Without dying or getting eaten or going mad, somehow? It'd be weird but cool. Plus it provides direction for the book, and lets our fascinating couple be together. Although it would mean we don't get to meet El's Mum Higgins for much longer, which would be terrible. It would also explain the Word Of Mum since presumably getting caught in an exploding school full of mals that has been cut off from the real world and is floating in the void, is something a parent would consider a negative outcome for their child, and it only happens because El is emotionally attached to Orion. (Maybe. Or maybe she'd try to save him anyways, idk.)
Third option: El manages to yank Orion out. This has most of the disadvantages of option one (no direction for where to take book 3, kind of anticlimactic) plus doesn't even have Angst unless El does something Evil to do it and it fucks up their relationship, El's relationship with herself, and El's relationship with her mother all in one go. Like either pulling mana from Orion against his will, or maybe mind-controlling him (we know she has mind-control spells.) The part of my brain that loves feeling awful really likes this suggestion. I'm not sure where it would go from there though.
Part of me really, really wants to see El have a descent into honest to god evil at this point. I'm pretty sure the story isn't going that way, El's done such a great job of walking towards the light and resisting even the smallest step in the other direction. And I suspect thematically the book is supposed to be "fuck what people expect you to be, YOU get to decide that" which wouldn't really work if El goes evil after all.
Anyways: advantages: high angst, would explain mum's warning; disadvantages, do we actually want that much angst? also, where would the title fit in?
(I was going to bed when the title of the second book, which had seemed pretty straightforward throughout the whole thing (El is last graduate because she's going out last to save everyone and is also destroying the school, so no more graduates after her) really hit. El's the last graduate because she graduated and Orion didn't.) (Well. If option 1 plays out anyways.)
There are a couple questions that are very important here, namely, what the fuck is Orion thinking? And, what was El's mum thinking?
It's possible that Orion was thinking that he had to fight the mawmouth from hell to keep it from getting out, even though El didn't think that. Or that he thought there was some risk to El's plan and he wanted to make sure the mawmouth from hell didn't get out. We don't actually know what his perspective was here. I think it's somewhat more likely that Orion knew he could get out safely and chose to have his epic boss battle instead. It's more than adequately foreshadowed. We know Orion loves fighting mals, believes he's invincible, and has never once expressed the slightest interest in backing down from a challenge (and has generally been resistant to El trying to get him to back down.) El tends to see that as a martyr complex thing, but in the graduation hall she realizes it's not, he really does like fighting mals just that much. She also concluded he could learn to like other things as well, but she did figure out that yeah, he really does enjoy this stuff, a lot. Orion walking away from the biggest boss fight ever would be like an Olymplic athlete who's been training to be a swimmer or whatever from toddlerhood just...walking away right before the finals. Your life wouldn't make sense after that. Orion is not primarily motivated by protecting people (if he was, he'd be happy at the lack of mals in the first part of the year) he's directly motivated by the fights themselves. So it does not matter that he doesn't need to fight the mawmouth to protect anyone. Fighting the mawmouth is its own reward. (One worth presumably dying over.)
El's mum: I do not know, this really hasn't been answered yet. I'm inclined to trust El that the warning wouldn't be about pain alone, El's mum seems the type to encourage her child to make her own decisions unless there was an overwhelmingly important reason not to. Telling her child to not fall in love to avoid heartbreak is the exact opposite of what someone like El's mum would do. She's probably told a zillion grieving people that grief is love that has nowhere else to go (or whatever), that it's a healthy thing and part of being alive. There is no way she'd want El to be alone her senior year rather than close to Orion just because Orion wasn't going to make it, she's not that kind of person.
Whatever is going to happen, it's going to be worse than Orion dying/getting lost in the void or Orion being unable to forgive El for pulling him away from his big boss fight.
Or, it's not going to be about El and Orion's relationship at all. It might be that while the Scholomance thought what they were doing was right, that there will be Unintended Consequences to the world of them destroying the Scholomance and a metric shit ton of mals in the process.
And I just realized a fourth option. That in getting Orion out, El manages to also undo their hard work and let all the mals pour back out too.
But that doesn't make sense either. El's mum doesn't do the lesser evil. She wouldn't let Orion die to save other people's lives, and she wouldn't want El to do that either. So while I could see that happening as a plot point, I don't see that explaining El's mum's message. Dammit.
I think the message only makes sense if El's connection to Orion results in her doing something evil/going down the maleficer path, at least a little bit, or at least El's mother thinks she is likely to. Or maybe if there's some evil that isn't caused by a lesser good. But not if there's a greater evil caused by saving one person.
I don't know.
Or maybe El has fundamentally misunderstood her mother. That is definitely possible. The parent a child sees is not the whole adult, and realizing your parent isn't as perfect as you thought is a very common coming of age experience.

Event poll results - graph version
I already made a summary about the poll results on Monday, but a few people seemed excited about graphs so. I got graphs! ;)
Now first, as a PSA, I took a whole ass course on statistics. That was 20 years ago and I do not remember SHIT. Just so everyone's aware on the scientific invalidity of this post.
Then, as a reminder, I basically have three sets of responses.
The answers of writers on the writers' questionnaire, to gauge the events they wanted to PARTICIPATE in.
The answers of readers on the readers' quesionnaire, to gauge the events they wanted to SEE.
The answers of the writers on the readers' questionnaire, because there is a difference in the events you'd like DO and the ones you'd like to SEE.
Also, for ease of writing, I refer to the numbers of part 1. as "participation rates" and of part 2. en 3. as "approval rates". As terms they don't quite cover the load, I'm aware, but it became very cumbersome to write "the number of people who are stoked or think it could be fun" so. They're being used in a non-literal sense.
And finally: for most questions I used a 5-point Likert scale, but I also include simplified data, where I added the two "positive" answers (e.g. will definitely participate + will probably participate) and the two "negative" answers. This makes initial comparison a little more straightforward, cause I find it hard to sometimes make sense of all the bars and numbers, and then I can go back more easily to the original data and see the nuance.
General
I received 72 responses, which was maybe a little less than I'd hoped, and definitely less than the last poll, but it was also an actual questionnaire and not a one-click poll so that no doubt raised the treshhold.
And there was a perfect 50/50 separation between writers and readers so I'm glad I was able to reach both groups.
Writers' choice
This is a summary of the writers' results in the simplified version - in green the sum of "would definitely/probably participate" and in red "would definitely/probably NOT participate". These do not add up to 100% because the middle answer ("would possibly participate") was not taken into account.
The full graphs are below:
So with 69% definite+probable participation rate (nice...) the Author Interviews are the most wanted event. And also the least wanted event (25% as per the simplified version's ranking). Which is- not unexpected. Interestingly only 6% said they would "possibly" participate (for most others, with the exception of Weekly Challenges, the "possibly" rate is around 25%), so it's really a "for or against" kind of situation. Interestingly, the Interviews are the only event where "definitely" scores higher than "probably". Mostly though, as I already said in the previous post, I find it absolutely hilarious that the most wanted event by writers is the one is where they don't have to write :D.
Theme Week, and Fic Exchange, have fairly similar numbers, both in the simplified ranking and in the graphs. Advent seems similar, but there's less "definitely" and more "probably not" which is why it scores so much lower.
The Weekly Challenges are interesting, because they score the lowest, but it's not because people don't wanna participate - at 17% it scores average on that parameter. But 50% of writers said they would "possibly" participate. It could be that people weren't sure what it entails (I purposely worded it vaguely cause I wanted to keep options open), or maybe they'd be happy to participate on occasion but not necessarily every week, or maybe another reason entirely.
The Big Bang, then, doesn't seem too popular when you look at the simplified numbers, but in the graphs it's clear that it scores second highest on "definitely"... and highest on "definitely not" (though that's a tie with Interviews and Fic Exchange). So once again a sort of "for or against" situation
In general, for most events, about half to 2/3 of respondents would most likely participate, 1/10 to 1/5 would most likely NOT participate, and 1/4 might or might not. So really what I learn from this (and I suppose this is not surprising but yanno) is that no single event is going to convince everyone, and a variety of events throughout the year is the best way to involve everyone at some point.
For most of the week, the Big Bang had the lowest participation rate, going up to 37% of writers who said they definitely/probably wouldn't participate - while the Bang had the highest approval rating with the readers. Conversely the event with the highest participation rate (Interviews) scored lowest with readers. Now, the last one is still true, but I'm glad at least the first one has a better balance now :).
As for the other questions, there wasn't any Big Conclusions to be drawn from them, so I just include them here for information purposes.
Nearly half (ssshhht I'm wishful thinking) would participate in a YR Women's week tho, so I find that encouraging :).
Writers who read
As I mentioned, the questionnaire for readers ("What events would you like to see?") was filled in both by readers-who-don't-write and writers, and even though you'll see the end result is similar, I will discuss them separately cause I thought it was interesting.
So, as it turns out, writers are SUPER excited about Big Bangs - at least when they don't have to participate 🤣 (please know that as a writer I say this with all the love and understanding in the world). 69% of writers (yeah I can't make that joke again can I...) (nice...) are stoked to see one happen, and another 25% thinks it would be fun, for a whopping 94% approval rate!
Weekly Challenges also score significantly higher here, which strengthens my suspicion that the low participation rate is mostly due to "not sure if can participate every week".
While participation rates for Theme Week vs Fic Exchange were similar, approval rates for Theme Week are clearly much higher. Maybe because a Fic Exchange is less fun when you're not participating?
I do wonder if the high scores for Theme Week are (in part) due to the fact we already had one, and people have an idea of what it is and how it works. We got a lot of young people in their first fandom, who are maybe not as familiar with fandom events. So basically I should run one of each events and then redo the questionnaire :D.
Author Interviews has extremely similar approval rates compared with the participation rates, although interestingly there is very little overlap between the answers - there are multiple people who do not want to participate in the Interviews but are excited to see them happen, and vice versa!
With the exception of Interviews, there's only ever one or two writers who don't care/don't wanna see a certain event. In other words, writers just want fic on their dashes and they don't care where it comes from ;).
I mean I think it's fairly obvious what gets the highest approval rate ;).
Readers-who-don't-write
Starting with the graph here so they'd be closer to the writer version for easy comparison. The winner is slightly less clear than in the writer version, but still pretty obvious :)
In general, readers-who-don't-write are a little more critical than writers. They (slightly!) more often disapprove of events, and their approval rates are often some 10-15% lower than the writers'.
Still, the general trend is similar - there's a top group (Challenges, BB, Theme), a middle group (Exchange, Advent, Recs) and an ugly duckling (Interviews), and even if the order within the groups varies slightly, they are consistent for both writers and readers. Which is obviously good.
They don't care about Author Interviews. Like. At all :D. (Not pointing fingers here, I get it, that's a writer thing, I know.)
Can't really figure out why they're so against Fic Exchanges?
And for the sake of completeness:
I was gonna write a little more but this took me way too long and it's almost 1am so I'm just gonna... yanno... go. Just so I'm well rested in case we cant set the Big Bang date tomorrow! ;)

Distracted Driving Charge or Ticket? Lawyer Up Now!
Distracted driving, a leading cause of accidents and fatalities on Ontario roads, has seen a surge in recent years due to the widespread use of smartphones and electronic devices. In response, Ontario has implemented some of Canada's most stringent distracted driving laws, with severe fines and penalties for offenders. When facing a distracted driving charge in Ontario, the decision to hire a lawyer is a crucial one. While it's possible to represent yourself, there are compelling reasons why retaining legal counsel is often the wisest course of action.
Here are six key reasons to consider hiring a lawyer:
1 - Navigate Complex Laws and Procedures Ontario's distracted driving laws are intricate and nuanced. Under the Highway Traffic Act, using hand-held communication and electronic entertainment devices while driving is illegal. However, exceptions and technicalities may apply in certain situations. An experienced traffic lawyer will have a deep understanding of the relevant statutes, case law, and legal procedures surrounding distracted driving charges. Your lawyer can help you navigate the court system, ensure all proper procedures are followed, and identify potential legal issues with your case. They'll know how to file the necessary paperwork, request disclosure of evidence from the prosecution, and guide you through each step of the legal process. This expertise can be invaluable, especially if you're unfamiliar with traffic court proceedings. 2 - Explore Possible Defenses While distracted driving charges may seem straightforward, often viable defences can be raised. An experienced lawyer will carefully review the circumstances of your case to identify any weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence or potential violations of your rights. Some possible defenses may include: - Challenging the officer's observations or evidence - Arguing that you were using the device for an emergency purpose - Demonstrating that the device was not actually in use while driving - Showing that you were legally parked when using the device - Proving that your actions fall under an exemption in the law Your lawyer can assess which defences may apply to your specific situation and develop the most robust possible legal strategy. Even if the evidence against you seems overwhelming, a skilled lawyer may be able to find angles you hadn't considered. 3 - Negotiate for Reduced Charges or Penalties One of the most valuable services a lawyer can provide is negotiating with the prosecutor on your behalf. In many cases, it may be possible to have the charges reduced or penalties lessened through skilled plea bargaining. An experienced traffic lawyer will know how to approach these negotiations and what deals may be available. For example, your lawyer may convince the prosecutor to reduce the charge to a lesser offence with fewer demerit points or a more minor fine. They may also be able to negotiate for alternative sentencing options like traffic school or community service instead of harsher penalties. These plea deals can save you thousands of dollars in fines and insurance increases while protecting your driving record. 4 - Protect Your Driving Record and License A distracted driving conviction in Ontario severely affects your driving record and license. You'll face a fine of $615 to $1,000 for a first offence, three demerit points, and a 3-day license suspension. The penalties increase dramatically for subsequent offences, with fines up to $3,000, 6 demerit points, and license suspensions of up to 30 days. These penalties can have long-lasting impacts on your driving ability and insurance rates. An experienced lawyer can help you avoid a conviction or minimize the effect on your driving record. This can be especially crucial if you rely on your license for work or have previous traffic violations on your record. 5 - Save Money in the Long Run While hiring a lawyer does involve upfront costs, it can often save you significant money in the long run. The fines and increased insurance premiums associated with a distracted driving conviction can add up to thousands of dollars over time. By reducing or eliminating these financial penalties, a skilled lawyer may save you far more than their legal fees. Additionally, a lawyer can help you avoid missing work for multiple court appearances by efficiently handling your case. They may be able to appear on your behalf for certain proceedings, saving you time and lost wages. When you factor in the potential long-term costs of a conviction, investing in quality legal representation often makes financial sense. 6- Reduce Stress and Uncertainty Facing any legal charge can be a stressful and anxiety-inducing experience, especially if you're unfamiliar with the court system. Hiring a knowledgeable lawyer can provide a sense of relief and peace of mind, reducing the uncertainty of your case. Your lawyer will be able to explain what to expect at each stage of the process, answer your questions, and advocate for your interests. Having a legal professional in your corner can also help level the playing field when dealing with prosecutors and the court. You'll have someone with expertise and experience fighting for the best possible outcome in your case, empowering you with a sense of control and confidence. This support and guidance can be invaluable in navigating a confusing and intimidating legal process.
What do I do now?
While it's possible to handle a distracted driving charge on your own, the potential consequences are severe enough to warrant careful consideration of hiring a lawyer. An experienced traffic lawyer can provide numerous benefits, from navigating complex laws to negotiating reduced penalties and protecting your driving record. Investing in quality legal representation is often the wisest course of action when you factor in the long-term costs of a conviction and the stress of dealing with the legal system alone. If you're facing a distracted driving charge in Ontario, consulting with a knowledgeable lawyer should be your first step in mounting an effective defence and achieving the best possible outcome for your case. Remember, the specific circumstances of your case will determine the best legal strategy. An initial consultation with an experienced traffic lawyer can help you understand your options and decide on the most appropriate action. Don't let a momentary lapse in judgment behind the wheel derail your driving privileges or financial stability - seek legal advice now and give yourself the best chance at a favourable resolution. In this article, we'll dive into what you need to know about used BMW engines and transmissions and introduce you to Turbo Auto Parts, your go-to source for quality used parts.

Additionally, buying used engines can be a more sustainable choice, contributing to the reduction of automotive waste.
2. What to Look for in a Used BMW Engine
When shopping for a used BMW engine, several factors should be considered:
Mileage: Lower mileage engines generally have more life left in them. However, a well-maintained engine with higher mileage can also be a good option.
Service History: A detailed service history provides insights into the engine’s past maintenance and potential issues.
Compatibility: Ensure the engine is compatible with your specific BMW model and year.
Condition: Inspect for any signs of wear or damage. Reliable sellers will provide a warranty or guarantee, giving you peace of mind.

2. What to Look for in a Used BMW Transmission
Consider these aspects when purchasing a used BMW transmission:
Mileage: Lower mileage transmissions are preferable, but a well-maintained transmission with higher mileage can still be a good choice.
Shifting Performance: Ensure the transmission shifts smoothly without any unusual noises or hesitations.

Introduction to IVF and Its Importance
In vitro fertilization (IVF) has revolutionized the field of reproductive medicine, offering hope to countless couples struggling with infertility. As a city known for its medical excellence, Bangalore is home to some of the most esteemed IVF specialists in India. This article serves as an extensive guide to finding the best IVF Specialist in Bangalore, ensuring you receive the highest quality care and the best chances of success.
Understanding IVF: The Basics
IVF is a complex series of procedures used to treat fertility or genetic problems and assist with the conception of a child. During IVF, mature eggs are collected (retrieved) from ovaries and fertilized by sperm in a lab. The fertilized egg (embryo) or eggs are then transferred to a uterus. One full cycle of IVF takes about three weeks. Sometimes these steps are split into different parts and the process can take longer.
Why Choose Bangalore for IVF Treatment?
Bangalore is a hub for advanced medical treatments, and IVF is no exception. The city boasts:
World-class medical facilities: Equipped with the latest technology and state-of-the-art labs.
Highly qualified specialists: Many of whom have received training and certifications from prestigious institutions worldwide.
Affordable treatment options: Despite the high standards of care, IVF treatments in Bangalore are often more affordable compared to Western countries.
Top Factors to Consider When Choosing an IVF Specialist
Choosing the right IVF specialist is crucial to the success of your treatment. Here are some key factors to consider:
1. Experience and Credentials
An experienced IVF specialist is more likely to understand the complexities and nuances of infertility treatments. Look for specialists who have:
Extensive experience in reproductive medicine.
Board certifications and relevant qualifications.
A track record of successful IVF treatments.
2. Success Rates
While no specialist can guarantee success, high success rates can indicate a specialist’s proficiency. When evaluating success rates, consider:
The age group of patients treated.
Types of infertility issues addressed.
The clinic's transparency in reporting success rates.
3. Patient Reviews and Testimonials
Patient reviews provide insight into the specialist’s approach, bedside manner, and overall patient satisfaction. Look for testimonials that mention:
Positive treatment experiences.
Compassionate and supportive staff.
Effective communication and follow-up care.
4. Comprehensive Services
A good IVF clinic offers a wide range of services beyond IVF, including:
Initial fertility assessments and diagnostics.
Other assisted reproductive technologies (ART) such as IUI, ICSI, and donor programs.
Psychological counseling and support services.
5. Advanced Technology and Techniques
The field of reproductive medicine is constantly evolving. Ensure that the clinic uses the latest technology and techniques, such as:

Ovarian Stimulation
You will receive hormonal injections to stimulate your ovaries to produce multiple eggs. Monitoring through blood tests and ultrasounds will track your progress.
Egg Retrieval
Once the eggs are mature, they are retrieved through a minor surgical procedure. This is typically done under sedation to minimize discomfort.
Fertilization and Embryo Culture
The retrieved eggs are fertilized with sperm in the lab. The resulting embryos are cultured for a few days before being assessed for quality.
Embryo Transfer
The best quality embryos are selected and transferred to your uterus. This step is relatively quick and usually does not require anesthesia.
Pregnancy Test
About two weeks after the embryo transfer, you will take a pregnancy test to determine if the procedure was successful.
Emotional and Psychological Support During IVF
Undergoing IVF can be an emotional rollercoaster. Many clinics offer counseling services to help you cope with the stress and anxiety that may arise during treatment. Support groups and therapy sessions can also be beneficial in providing emotional support.

Drawbacks of the LG S75Q Soundbar:
While the LG S75Q Soundbar offers an impressive audio experience, it's essential to be aware of its limitations. One potential downside is its evaluation, which may be on the higher side for certain buyers. Nevertheless, considering the first rate features and sound quality it conveys, it will in general be seen as a worthwhile hypothesis for audiophiles and home performance center fans.
Buying Guide:
1. TV Compatibility and Room Size: When considering the LG S75Q 3.1.2ch Soundbar, it's crucial to assess your TV's compatibility and the size of your room to ensure you get the best audio experience. Firstly, check if your TV is compatible with this soundbar. While the LG S75Q is designed to seamlessly enhance LG TV performance, it can also work with other brands thanks to its versatile connectivity options, including HDMI eARC and Bluetooth. Ensure that your TV has the necessary ports to connect the soundbar. Additionally, for the best results, consider using it with an LG TV to take full advantage of its integration features, like controlling the soundbar with your LG TV remote. Secondly, assess the size of your room. The LG S75Q Soundbar is powerful, boasting a 3.1.2-channel audio system with 380W of output. This makes it ideal for bigger rooms where you need to occupy the space with rich, vivid sound. In smaller spaces, it may still deliver exceptional audio but could be overkill. Therefore, it's essential to match the soundbar's power to your room size for optimal audio quality. In smaller rooms, you might want to consider the S40Q or S65Q models from LG's soundbar lineup, which offer excellent audio without excessive power for more compact spaces. 2. Budget and Pricing: While the LG S75Q Soundbar offers a premium audio experience, it's essential to consider your budget and explore pricing options before making a purchase decision. This soundbar is loaded with cutting-edge highlights like Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and High-Res Sound, making it an appealing decision for audiophiles and home theater fans. However, these premium features come at a price, and the LG S75Q is positioned in the higher-end segment of the soundbar market. Before purchasing, determine your budget constraints and assess whether the LG S75Q fits within your financial parameters. While it may be a significant investment, the exceptional audio quality, immersive experience, and seamless compatibility with LG TVs make it a worthwhile choice for those who prioritize audio excellence. If the LG S75Q stretches your budget too far, consider exploring LG's other soundbar models, like the S40Q or S65Q. These models offer changing degrees of execution and elements at various sticker costs, permitting you to find a soundbar that suits both your sound necessities and your budget. 3. Customer Reviews and Research: Before finalizing your purchase of the LG S75Q Soundbar, it's highly recommended to delve into customer reviews and conduct thorough research to ensure you're making an informed decision. Start by reading customer reviews and testimonials on trusted online retail platforms. These true encounters with different clients can give important insights into the item's exhibition, dependability, and convenience. Look for feedback related to audio quality, ease of setup, and any potential issues or limitations. Additionally, research the LG S75Q Soundbar on reputable tech websites and forums to gather expert opinions and in-depth analyses. These sources often offer technical details and comparisons that can help you understand how the soundbar stacks up against other models in its category. Don't forget to explore online video reviews, which can give you a visual and auditory demonstration of the soundbar's capabilities.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, the LG S75Q 3.1.2ch Soundbar with Dolby Atmos is a game-changing audio solution that addresses common audio problems in home entertainment setups. With its immersive sound, premium audio technology, and seamless integration with LG TVs, it offers an audio experience that rivals that of a cinema. How to say "Or" in Korean
아니면, (이)나, 거나, 또는, 혹은
Like many other things in Korean there are multiple ways to say “Or”. And yes, you should learn them all, because they are each used differently to each other and can give off a different meaning. However, rest assured that they are all super easy to learn.
아니면 = Or; Either
아니면 is one of the most common ways to say “or.” 아니면 literally translates to “if not.” It can be thought of as a conjunction. It’s useful when connecting two nouns together. For example, saying “this or that”: 이거 아니면 저거
It’s also commonly used when asking someone to choose between 2 different options:
지하철 탈까요? 아니면 택시 탈까요?
= Should we take the subway or the train?
MORE EXAMPLES:
너네 엄마랑 사니 아니면 아빠랑 사니?
Do you live with your mum or your dad?
걸어가고 싶으세요 아니면 버스를 타시겠어요?
Would you rather walk or take the bus?
그 케이크 너 먹을 거니? 아니면 내가 먹을래.
Do you want that cake? If not, I’ll have it.
커피에 우유를 넣을까요 아니면 크림을 넣을까요?
Would you like milk or cream in your coffee?
내가 다음주나 아니면 그 다음주에 올 수 있을 거야.
I could come next week, or the week after.
그들이 말을 일본어로 하나요 아니면 한국어로 하나요?
Are they speaking Japanese or Korean?
N + (이)나
(-이)나 is similar to 아니면, but can only be attached to nouns. It has a few different usages itself.
consonant: ~나 | vowel: ~이나
First usage: a simple choice between to things or expressing “or”
Examples:
저는 캐나다나 미국에서 일하고 싶어요.
I want to work in Canada or America.
내일 영화관이나 박뭘관에 갈 거에요.
Tomorrow we are going to go to the movie theater ora museum.
Second usage: gives a meaning of “this or something similar”. to Indicate the speaker would rather do something else, but is choosing the thing specified as the last result. | This has a nuance that, while [noun] may not be the best thing, it’s acceptable at least
Examples:
라면이나 먹자.
= let’s eat ramen or something.
영화나 볼 거에요.
= I will watch a movie or something.
Third usage: can be added to a number or amount to indicate that something was more than expected
Examples:
기묘한 이야기를 세번이나 봤어.
= I watched stranger things (as many as) three times.
커피를 하루에 다섯 잔이나 마셔요?
Do you drink coffee 5 times a day? (you drink a lot)
집에 친구들이 20명이나 왔어요.
20 friends came to my home. (a lot of friends!)
It can also be added to certain question words, to form new words like:
- 언제나 – Anytime / all the time
- 어디나 – everywere
- 무엇이나 – anything / whatever
- 누구나 – everyone (a bit positive)
- 아무나 – anyone (a bit negative)
This grammar can also take on the shape of “아무 N+(이)나” to express “any N.” For example:
아무 스포츠나 = any sports
아무 음식이나 = any food
아무 영화나 = any movie
V + 거나
Similar to (이)나, except it can only be used with nouns. In the examples you have seen so far, ~(이)나 has been attached to nouns or adverbs. With ~(이)나, the speaker can indicate that something hasn’t been decided between two nouns or adverbs. By attaching ~거나 to a verb, the speaker can indicate that it hasn’t been decided which *action* will be completed.
Examples:
이 문제가 너무 어렵거나 도움이 필요하면 교무실로 오세요.
= If this question/problem is too difficult or you need help, come to the office
내일은 영화를 보거나 등산을 갈 거예요.
= Tomorrow I will either see a movie or go hiking.
행복하거나 친구랑 있을 땐 술을 마셔요.
= When I’m happy or with friends I drink alcohol.
외로울 때는 책을 읽거나 영화를 봐요.
= When I’m lonely I read a book or watch a movie.
If you combine question words like 누구, 어디, 무엇, 언제 etc., with VST-거나 (간에) the 간에 is optional, you highlight the irrelevance of that clause.
It is however more common to use the
[Question word] ____+ VST+든지 pattern
which is used to express the same thing. While all this might sound complicated, it makes more sense by looking at some examples:
무엇을 하건 간에 열심히 해야 돼요. (noticed how we contracted 거나 into 건)
= Whatever you do, you have to work hard.
나는 언제 일본에 가건 간에 친구를 만난다.
= Whenever I go to Japan, I meet my friend.
As you can see, the question words become “whatever” “whenever” “whoever” “wherever” and so on.
It is also possible to include ~거나 (or ~(이)나) twice in the same sentence – attached to both possible actions (or options). In these types of sentences the meaning changes to “whether or not”. For example:
비가 오거나 안 오거나 중요하지 않아요.
=It’s not important if it rains or not (doesn’t rain)
또는 (& 혹은) = Or, Either, Otherwise
혹은 and 또는 (If not; or if it’s not) function similarly to 아니면 and -(이)나. The main difference, however, is that 혹은 and 또는 are much more formal, so you likely would not hear them that often. I don’t think that there’s a significant difference between 혹은 and 또는 though – 혹은 has Chinese roots while 또는 is a native Korean word I believe, but other than that they’re interchangeable!
EXAMPLES:
남자 또는 여자. = Man or Woman.
나 또는 너. = Me and you.
이것 또는 저것. = This or that.
다음 모임은 토요일 또는 일요일이 될 것이다.
The next meeting will be either on Saturday or on Sunday.

Going through the Linked List and taking names.
I think I am figuring this out. We've got the linked list and we go through the list all the while picking up more Kanji from the Kanji Kompounds. 乱 is an excellent example. Possibly the best so far in that list. Though, overall, it doesn't seem to matter too much if the 乱 is the first or last kanji. Usually, the difference between the first position and second position is significant. (Or more significant than 乱.)
Here's the important part. The Kanji are actually, ironically enough, an excellent mnemonic device. Each stroke which has an order to them and a definite direction. They are normally black and black is good for memorization. No colors. And they are similar, but different enough. And their actual shape is a little bit flexible. It's fixed where it can't start looking different, but it can be bent or thickened or all sorts of stuff and still be a recognizable kanji. The Greeks never had it so good.
There is nothing mystical about it. But it takes practice. Think of a kanji stroke while thinking of a Kanji Kompound that goes there. And you should, after some practice be able to recall the kanji.
乱 has seven strokes. A good number, except that 乱 has too many good compounds to choose from. But it does retain its meaning when it's the first or second kanji. Let's make 叛乱 はんらん the first Kanji Kompound used. The stroke is from the top and this one slides to the left and slightly downward. 叛乱 はんらん is rebellion. on that stroke. 叛 is not part of the 2136. But it's not exactly uncommon. It means rebellion. はんせき叛跡, results of a rebellion. はんぐん叛軍 is rebel army. There's はんしん叛心 which is rebellious spirit and, similarly, はんい叛意 spirit of the rebellion. And even, はんしょう叛将 which is the commander of the rebellion. A very good kanji that is very straightforward, meaning you can deduce the Kanji Kompounds pretty easily. (It also uses the ON-Yomi はん which is what all of the kanji that have 反 use as it's ON-Yomi. It's easy to remember, also, since it has an unusual variant on its left side. 跡 you can add to your knowledge of the kanji. 意 将 and as for 心 this gives a nuanced definition to "heart". So, add three with a, maybe, 1/3 from the nuanced kanji. - I don't have yet. So, give it 2 points. せき is very memorable. And it's meaning is, I think, "vestiges", as in traces of the path. But it's better to remember it as vestiges since it's an excellent SAT word. 軍 has its meaning solidified. And 将 is underused and often forgotten. 叛 makes it more memorable. And you can actually think of a rebel commander. Someone like Robert E Lee. (No, this is not a Southern biased dissertation. If I said "Stonewall" Jackson than you could have a gripe! Ha!)
乱す---みだすto throw out of order, to disarrange, to disturb can be thrown into the pile. Just remember that 乱 is a verb. 乱交らんこうis the odd one and goes straight across. It means promiscuity. Sweet! Throw 入り乱れる into a pile. Just know that 乱 got kana Kanji in it. 乱数 means random number. Excellent. That's for the vertical stroke. 乱発 can be put on this vertical down as well. Random number and Random firing of a number of bullets - we will use two Kanji Kompounds for one stroke. It has worked well, so far, for me. 乱舞 is "boisterous dance". That goes on the left side with the mouth. 乱闘 is "Fray". A fight between two small groups. 乱雑 (as a kanji, this second kanji, usually means miscellaneous) means "riot". Second stroke on the mouth. 乱暴 means violent rowdiness. 乱費 is the last stroke and perhaps this is a good last one - reckless spending.
Perhaps the most used is 乱暴. It's actually pronounced, and you might know this, Ranbo. (Close to Rambo. Maybe that's where Rambo got his name??? )
Story, optional: The harmless promiscuity led to some rioting and all this random firing, which caused a fight which turned into a riot is probably going to add up to a lot of reckless spending on our part.
There were also two kanji on stroke 5. So, 14 points overall. 14 and a 1/2. Yes. That's sort of silly. The points, but it's a good counter. I mean, all we need is about 4,000 points and we will be good to go. (There will be some subtracting from this, but you can see, if you use this example, that the use of Kompounds makes it easy to get kanji and adds to the understanding overall as well.
Just for Inventory:
内乱 ないらんcivil war, insurrection, rebellion, domestic conflict
争乱 そうらんrioting, disturbances
叛乱 はんらんrebellion
乱交 らんこうpromiscuity
入り乱れる いりみだれるto be jumbled together
動乱 どうらんdisturbance, agitation, commotion, upheaval, riot
反乱 はんらんinsurrection, mutiny, rebellion, revolt, uprising
外乱 がいらんnoise (interference)
振り乱す ふりみだすto dishevel (hair)
掻き乱す かきみだすto stir up, to disturb
取り乱す とりみだすto scatter about, to be distracted

I don't think you play TRR/TRH anymore but you should see what they did to Kiara in the newest chapter. It's so dumb and makes me so angry, especially considering the current climate of events. I've already seen people on Reddit be like "but we helped her overcome her trauma" (we didn't lol) and someone called her the c-word, very classy. Honestly PB's been low key racist in the past but all the stuff right now makes it high key...
(Apologies for the long post and not being able to place this under a cut)
I'm pretty glad I got these anons because truth be told I wasn't sure how many people - besides the few that I already knew were constantly speaking about Kiara's treatment in the books - would care enough to ask any questions about this. Most of the posts I saw expressed a disturbing eagerness to throw her under the bus, without exploring nuance or asking questions, and at this point I'm not very surprised.
I've always maintained that the treatment for Kiara is what happens when both the writers and the fandom are heartless, and these past few weeks have only been proof of that.
There are questions you could raise about this finale re: Kiara - questions almost no one seems to bother asking. I have three:
1. In this Coventus Nobilis...how is it that I see four Heads of House, and only one heir?
2. If Kiara - who is not head of house - is supposed to represent Castelserraillian instead of her father Hakim (who presides over that estate), why do I not see Madeleine? Why do I not see Penelope?
3. Why are we suddenly seeing Adeleide popping up out of practically nowhere to rep Krona/Fydelia, and Landon conveniently rep-ping Portavira?
Some of the answers to these questions lie in the questions themselves. Why else would Madeleine and Penelope not be present in this meeting - if it weren't to purposely distance them from this awful moment? After all, both of them have inbuilt subplots ready for the next book that would require interactions with the core group. How else do you think the writers could ensure we kept coddling them and pandering to them in Book 3, except by distancing them from this "betrayal"?
Why else would the narrative choose to pit Kiara - the lone woman of colour we'd been shitting on for most of this series - against Olivia - the white woman who has been given innumerable individual PoV scenes and her own mini-book (and whose reputation we had to help rebuild in said mini book whether we cared about her stupid duchy or not).
Why else would they force Kiara to alert us mere minutes before the meeting begin, if not to distract us with crumbs ("See? At least we wrote her as warning you. Of course we don't hate her!").
Why else would you have Olivia and Kiara pitted against each other like this - if not to show these two women side by side, on opposing ends - and compel us to believe that the white woman we spent 4.5 books propping up and pampering, is the most loyal one. When in fact we have done absolutely nothing to deserve any fucking loyalty from Kiara or her family to begin with! (Ezekiel and his white bride notwithstanding).
What we finally got as a result, was a narrative that (as @queen-of-effing-everything summed it up when I discussed this with her) in one full sweep "glorifies Olivia, shields Madeleine and Penelope and sets up Kiara". Very few of us even noticed. And even if we did notice, is there any guarantee that we would care??
Remember how I mentioned in my last ask that I wished we expanded the same energy that we did with Aurora, to speak up against the ill-treatment of other black characters? Kiara was undoubtedly one of those.
After this, we as a fandom will speak very easily now of her "betrayal". We will call her the b-word and the c-word. We will boast of how we will "take her down" along with Adeleide and Landon and Bartie Sr. We'll boast about how we "never liked her" to begin with, as if doing so required some...idk exemplary foresight. We will make memes about how Olivia was "the only bitch we ever respected". We will make huge, sweeping claims about how Kiara was our "friend" and how (as you've mentioned, anon) we "helped her overcome her trauma" (!!!!) and claim by that token that we were entitled to good treatment from her. I'm pretty sure when TRH3 finally comes out, her every word and action will be screenshot, put up on blogs, mocked and torn down just so we can write essays on how awful she is.
Yet I saw very little of this energy in Book 3, where the MC could first emotionally manipulate her into supporting the Unity Tour, and where we actively suspected her at a time when she was traumatized. At most there was some lukewarm acknowledgement of how she "deserves better", all while people still continued to write fanfic that positioned her as creepy and obsessed and villainous. Almost no one had a problem with Savannah not acknowledging Kiara's earlier support of her, and in fact I'd seen posts that clubbed her with the other ladies of the court who likely "treated Savannah badly". Her father Hakim was made to join the tour alongside her by default, without the expectations that Landon/Emmeline and Godfrey/Adeleide were allowed to have, and the fandom was mysteriously silent about Hakim being made to "bow to his knees" in a way the others did not have to. Very few people even bothered to notice or talk about how often Penelope was allowed to hold the MC's baby, or how Kiara was never really allowed to hold her even once. Which "friend" treats someone like this??
When I finally published this essay on the treatment meted out to Kiara especially in Book 3, what I got was a lot of neat, but ultimately hollow, little platitudes about how Kiara "deserved better" (How and in what way? Who knows, who cares). Out of those many many people who reblogged and responded, only a handful held the MC and Drake in particular (and Maxwell, who thought it appropriate to joke about "one suspect down") accountable for choosing to suspect and interrogate just her, and for showing ZERO remorse in forcing her to reopen those wounds. How is it that we can judge Kiara for this latest "betrayal", yet pretend that the MC and Drake had nothing to do with the pain THEY caused to her? How is it that this fandom was so fired up over her comments, yet would have such a weak, muted, carefully-generalized response to the screenshots where Drake was openly suspecting her and optionally minimizing her trauma?
Following that, why should we be entitled to good treatment from Kiara when we never really gave her even half as much?? Why is it so easy to divorce characters from their words and actions in Drake/MC/Maxwell's case, but so hard for a character like Kiara? (One may claim this is because Drake and Maxwell are potential co-protagonists, but the aforementioned essay already proves that you as a main character can get punished for not treating a mere side character with kindness).
Another thing that fascinates and repulses me even further is how the fandom has created myths around this one character, and how PB has constantly leaned into these "characteristics" even though the text itself tells an altogether different story:
1. Kiara is a snob. This is especially hilarious considering that she is established in Book 2 as being the only person who befriended Savannah before her departure and cared about what happened to her when she left. Never once in the books has she looked down on us for class-related issues, or outright mocked people for not knowing the languages she knew. In fact, she was the first person to acknowledge our skills if we showed any before Lythikos in Book 1. On the other hand, Penelope can be uppity and look down on us in Book 1 (there is even a dialogue option in Chapter 10 that leads to her calling us a "commoner wench") if we don't do well, and yet she's a cinnamon roll. Olivia can engage in snobbish , entitled behaviour without the fandom having a problem just because she's their favourite. Madeleine can look down on us and pretend for 3/4ths of the social season that we're not worth her time yet somehow Kiara is the snob. Okay. Okay. 😐
2. Kiara is "obsessed with" Drake and constantly comes on to him. This is said by the same group of people who saw Olivia fucking Nevrakis plant a WHOLE FUCKING SMACKER on Liam's mouth, and said..nothing. Kiara on the other hand, has admired Drake's abs once, mentioned she'd always liked Drake once, spoken normally to him about his sister once, flirted with him once (Paris tea party), and ordered a wine from him when he was bartending. In the next book she either looks at him wistfully or admires his suit. Yet somehow she's the creepy, annoying, stalkerish. Okay. Ooookay. 😑
(This one was particularly damaging, because post the TRR3 hiatus, all efforts from PB were focused on reversing Kiara's position as an alternative LI. This included "confirming" on livestream that her affections were one-sided, at a time when Olivia was finally allowed to have some romantic moments with a single Liam, pushing forward a buildup scene to Drake's eventual secret wedding that had him acting extremely rude and confrontational to Kiara mere minutes after suspecting her (while she was expressing joy at his upcoming wedding in his playthrough!!!), and involving a subplot where he openly and by default suspected her. Sure, he spends a minute to be nice to her and chat about trauma if the MC chooses. But that's like a drop of sewage water floating in an ocean of shit).
3. Kiara Pretended to Be Our Friend And Then Dropped Us: This is false. Kiara only ever promised to put in a good word for us to the rest of the court, no more, no less. And she fulfilled that promise. Otherwise she never pretended to be friends with us nor made friendly overtures either way. In fact if you're going to accuse anyone of duplicity, you have Penelope and Madeleine. Yet somehow Kiara is the dishonest one. Okay. Okay. 🙃
4. Kiara Was Insensitive To Penelope and Didn't Understand Her. I'm not sure how Kiara is supposed to magically understand something that her friend isn't telling her. Plus this argument deliberately leaves out the fact that she stood up for Penelope when people chose to be mean to her, and even explained to the MC that she employs "tough love" because she can't always be around to protect Penelope. It also leaves out how one-sided this friendship is and how Kiara is made to do most of the heavy work in this friendship. Meanwhile, at Kiara's most difficult time period, in Castelserraillian, Penelope says absolutely nothing as the MC forces Kiara to join the Unity Tour, while making bedroom eyes at Kiara's brother. In fact the only reason Kiara's brother even exists is to give Penelope a love interest. The Kiara-Penelope friendship practically revolves around Penelope. I have never really seen Penelope look out for Kiara or attempt to actually support her in any way, and Kiara was the one who got the knife wounds. Yet somehow I'm supposed to believe that Penelope's the better friend of the two. Suuuuure. 😡
And this steaming pile of crap doesn't just make its way into shitposts and short opinion posts. It creeps into fanfic and fandom opinions. It finds its way in the tags and in other social media. It eventually even finds its way into the books, even though nothing in the earlier narrative ever really supported these extremely stale takes.
Because PB didn't care for Kiara the way they cared for their white characters, they had no problem framing her narrative the way this fandom so desparately wanted it. Book 3 has the MC claim behind her back that Kiara is stuck-up and acts like knowing ten languages makes her better than everybody else, even though this is not backed up by the text, and in fact you will never see any acknowledgement of how Madeleine forced Kiara to make herself sound "exotic" in Book 2, or of how Madeleine and the MC (optionally) could downplay or question her skills unless they wanted to use her. Also, Penelope is never allowed to be talked about like that no matter what she's done. PB even had a scene (in the Hana playthrough) where they aggressively retconned the events of Madeleine's bachelorette party, where Kiara supposedly shouted at Penelope until the latter cried, and Madeleine was the one "having fun". Kiara was literally being thrown under the bus to make Madeleine look better. Madeleine. Imagine that. Madeleine.
Given how desparate the fandom was to nitpick and overdramatize everything Kiara said and did, is it any wonder that the team got away with the writing they gave her in Book 3? Considering that all the false arguments I stated above have made a resurgence in the past few weeks or days...is it any wonder that the only "support" this fandom is capable of re: Kiara, is lukewarm platitudes, cold takes and rank hypocrisy??
Yes, we can hold PB solely/largely accountable for the treatment meted out to Kiara now. They made these choices over and over, and continue to do so, while tossing us occasional crumbs of faux-sweet behaviour from the MC. And they did this in insidious ways, which were so hard to catch that even a Kiara stan like me had to observe multiple playthroughs just to unravel even half of what they'd done.
But let's not pretend a huge chunk of the fandom was just as responsible for this - with their unfounded opinions, their disgusting bias, their favouritism of white characters, their refusal to observe anything besides their favourites, and their godawful fanfiction where Kiara is a creep or evil or killing the virtuous main character. Out of the huge body of fanwork that I've seen for TRR that features Kiara - at least 90% of it features her stalking Drake, or harming the MC (particularly the Drake MC), or in cahoots with the villains, or generally being referred to as a creep (why Olivia, who kissed Liam without his consent in Book 1 and was entitled enough to be angry about him not returning her feelings in TRH1, never got this sort of writing - I fail to understand). There is a tremendous gap between the vitriol dumped on her when she does something the MC doesn't like, and the milquetoast response when harm is done to her. There have been times when I've had to comb through pages and pages of hate just to read even one positive post on Kiara in her own goddamn tag.
When the next book arrives, I know you folks will continue to gas up the white women in this book every chance you get, and mask your racist vitriol for characters like Kiara (and Hana, let's not forget the way y'all treat Hana) behind the same self-righteous judgements and the same tired, stale takes. I know that PB - despite what I will still believe is their hollow promises today - will write every single one of those stale takes into existence. All because it will be "justified", because Kiara is a "bad person" or "untrustworthy" or "fake". Whatever. Y'all can stick to Olivia The Black Hole and babysit Madeleine and Penelope, I guess. Kiara always deserved better than these writers and most of this fandom anyway.
#long post#kiara theron#the royal romance#the royal heir#trr kiara#lady kiara#i'm sorry kiki we didn't deserve you#i chose not to play trh2 and that's because this is EXACTLY what i felt would happen after they tossed us those crumbs in the book 1 finale

hi, Rachel. I've been wanting to write flash fiction for a while—not too long ago I started writing short stories but always on the longer side. But I can't understand exactly the difference between a longer and shorter piece, or how sometimes a short-short feels as vivid as a longer one, and google just states the obvious (write less words :D). So I know you've written a few and I really respect you in this art. Do you have any tips or help? even if you don't know, do you have resources? thanks
I wrote this post earlier but it ! disappeared! EDIT: I also thought I posted this but apparently I did not?? maybe I did?? I don’t know?? sorry this took forever! but luckily this is like my favourite thing to talk about in writing! The difference between flash fiction versus short short fiction and long short fiction really all comes down to structure, so I’ll share three different structures I’ve made up to help illustrate what I mean. (So keep in mind this is all made up by me and therefore may not make sense lol!)
I just wrote up a post on sticking to shorter word counts with @ellatholmes which you can check out here!
Disclaimer: While I’ll be separating short fiction into three categories (flash fiction, shorter short fiction, longer short fiction), even the nuances in these categories require different things. For example, even though stories between 1k-3500 words may count under shorter short fiction, a 1200 word story is going to have completely different needs than a 3500 word story, and the more practice you get, the more obvious these needs become. 200 words could be the difference between 50 different structures, so take these as a place to start but also the best way to understand how to write shorter short fiction is to do that: don’t allow yourself to go over a certain word count, and if you must for the story, reflect on what structure it may be following.
Usually when we’re taught story structure, it looks something like this:
(via skyword)
This obviously works, but visually, at least for me, can be a bit confusing because that inciting incident is just a flat plane that seems to propel rising action, when in reality, I think it’s a peak in itself and where the entire story lies.
1. Shorter short fiction structure (1000-3500 words)
We can break down this structure in 4 steps:
0) regular boring life before the story starts (not written in)
1) inciting incident (story starts here are as close to here when things get interesting)
2) rising action - story’s events happen here and lead to...
3) short changing moment (can be a decision, a realization, anything where the character “changes” in some way from who they were at the start of the story)
4) Denouement (usually very short, depending on the story this can be a paragraph or 1-2 sentences)
This kind of story has a bit more room than the second option to have more defined “moments”, but still it is quite compact, so efficiency is still required.
2. Shorter short fiction structure (modified - usually works for flash fiction)
This structure is 3 steps! It’s very similar to the above, but just slightly compressed with some different terminology I’ve made up lol!
0) regular boring life before story starts (not written in)
1) inciting/disruptive event (something happens here that disrupts the character’s life << NOTE that I’ve opted to call this the inciting/DISRUPTIVE event because in shorter short fiction, there may not be as much space to have a fleshed-out “event”, per se, but rather, just enough space to describe something [even in one sentence] that somehow disrupts that character’s life. For example, in my short story “Fig” the disruptive event is that someone dies--we don’t see this happen on the page, but it’s implied right away).
2) consequences of disruptive event (aka rising action, except I like to think of this as the consequences to that disruptive event until you make it to the inevitable end)
3) inevitable end (some change should occur to the character over the course of the story but it may be subtler/a smaller change)
This structure is more in line with the structure of a “moment” (how I like to view flash fiction in general). There is more concentration on this moment rather than setup, and usually you only get the information that is absolutely vital for understanding (even more so than you usually do in other kinds of short fiction).
Longer short fiction structure (3500+ words)
0) regular boring life before the story starts (not written in)
1) inciting incident (story starts here are as close to here when things get interesting)
2) rising action that leads to...
3) moment of change (this might be what you’d call the novel’s climax, but I view this as a moment when the character changes somehow from who they were at the beginning of the story)
4) denouement
This structure differs from the others as it has a bit more room to explore character change (obviously in that moment of change). The character might have a more defined, longer moment of “lift” or a reflective moment toward the end of the story, where that “lift” may be much, much shorter in the previous two structures.
I think the secret to getting a shorter short story feel as vivid as a much longer one is to understand their skeletons so that you’re not making your story top heavy or bottom heavy with thinness on either end (which I’ve 100% done in the past)! Redefining shorter short fiction is VITAL though. I don’t think people talk about this enough--the differences between each kind of short fiction. Flash fiction is just an impression, a little dip into a moment that still feels satisfying without being over 1k words. That’s a very difficult task, because it all depends on your idea. Some ideas are simply not flash fiction ideas because they intrinsically require more room to exist. When I wrote Mama Lives in My Mouth which is flash and is coming out in Young Voices soon so you can see that yourself, I immediately knew the idea of a mother living inside her child’s mouth would NEVER work in a piece longer than 1k words. I didn’t think I could sustain that idea, which meant I immediately knew it would be a shorter piece. This is a muscle you’ll develop as you write short fiction, and is a muscle I’m still developing myself! I know it’s difficult to parse whether or not an idea is a longer or shorter story when you’re first starting, which is why sometimes, it’s best to just jump in and fail. Failing is how I learned how to write a story and the differences between these three structures and when I may pull on one and not the other. At the end of the day, these structures are essentially the exact same. It goes INCITING INCIDENT > STORY’S EVENTS THAT LEAD TO > MOMENT OF CHANGE/REFLECTION/CLIMAX > STORY ENDS, but the placement/duration of these events differs, which is really only something you can understand when you do it!
I hope that helps! If anyone has any resources on flash fiction, please send them my way! <3
