Oh guys, I don’t even know where to start with this one. It was written as a “Generations Fix-it” but it’s SO much more than that, it’s an entire Spirk overlay for all of TOS canon.

With additional scenes, inner monologues and different POV for all the existing canon, it covers 3 seasons, 79 episodes, 7 films and 106 years of in world chronology. It’s almost 400k words long, split into 2 halves, and it is quite simply a masterpiece!

"I LOVE the K/S scenes in the Menagerie. This is the post-episode scene that in season one re-watches I most wanted to see. Kirk is so quiet, and very, very controlled throughout the whole thing. He’s clearly deeply hurt and trying to hide it. There’s an almost amused bitterness to his demeanour for much of it – Iike he can’t quite believe that Spock used their closeness to manipulate him so well. "

If you haven't seen it lately, their last words (right before the post scene here starts) are:

KIRK: Mister Spock, when you're finished, please come back and see me. I want to talk to you about this regrettable tendency you've been showing lately towards flagrant emotionalism.

SPOCK: I see no reason to insult me, sir. I believe I've been completely logical about the whole affair.

Which, on paper, reads like their usual end of episode jokey banter. But the delivery is:

KIRK: If you think I’m just going to let this go, then you really have lost it. We need to talk. Now.

SPOCK: Jim, I know you’re angry and you have every right to be, but forgive me, please.

Then we get a look at Pike, then back to Kirk and then episode just ends! With Jim completely alone. Urgh, my heart. So I decided to fix it. Um. Kind of.

okay, having watched the thing, I don’t think it actually “canonises” Spirk, not any more than any other time they held hands or any of the big scenes from the movies. in fact, I think this is rather more a passion-project/“elevated” fanwork from Shatner, Rod Rodenberry, and the Nimoy estate, than actual canon. That, and all my reservations about the whole cgi/deepfake “de-aging” aside,

I really like this thing, in all it’s cringey, kinda bad, earnest glory.

This felt like the “real” Kirk, a kind of hero that just doesn’t have the space to be (re)created in our present collective consciousness, who likes walking among nature and smelling pretty flowers and watching the sunset with his soulmate (platonic or romantic or both or whatever). It’s a little bit misguided, a little bit controversial, but it has heart, which I feel is also how Kirk has always been able to reflect Shatner at his best. I also like the ambiguity of how exactly it was that they were reunited. That’s best left to interpretation I think.

And I guess I’m glad that there’s a version of them that were together at the end and is a little closer to the mainstream than my favourite fics on ao3.

New fic! Back on my K/S ship because I can't stay away.

I claimed a prompt in the K/S advent last year and never wrote it. Until last week! All the love and apologies to @sunless-garden for the prompt.

This was the prompt: Set in any universe – another Spock shows up on the Enterprise and will be sticking around for a while (for any reason – diplomacy, transporter accident, Q shenanigans).

Spock knows it isn’t logical, but he can’t help but hate the way his other self looks at and interacts with Jim. When Spock catches Jim looking back at this other Spock, he decides that Jim’s friendship is no longer enough for him.

Summary: After his bondmate is lost at the launch of the Enterprise-B, a grief-stricken Spock vows to return the favour Jim once did him: to return his body to the planet of his birth. But to have any chance of doing so, he will need to track down the anomaly that almost destroyed the Enterprise. Following a report of similar phenomena takes him to an area of space that has not been explored since the first five-year mission of the original Enterprise, facing an unstable anomaly giving off strong chronaton radiation...

Four years into their five-year mission, tired of wrestling with his feelings for his first officer, Captain James Kirk is uniquely vulnerable to the arrival of an older, wiser version of Spock: one who has loved him for years, and is not afraid to have his feelings known...

it’s called First, Best Destiny by Ophelia_j on ao3 and i’m not kidding when i tell you it’s the only spirk fic that’s ever made me bawl my fucking eyes out. but also laugh! and smile! and it’s popular? but no one ever talks about it. honestly it’s a beautiful mix of emotions, and so masterfully done. it’s a multi pov novel length retelling of tos with incredibly slow burn spirk and the part 2 (also novel length) focuses on the movies and is eventually a genesis fix-it, IT MADE ME CRY BUT OH MY GODDDD). anyway yeah if anybody’s read it i’d love to talk about it and if you haven’t then GO READ IT

I will try to tag the authors if I can find blogs for them. If you know an authors blog I haven’t tagged, please tag them!

I dont have the spoons to write lil reviews for each fic bc theres toooooo many but maybe I’ll come back and edit some in sometime.

The Lotus Eaters (93594 words) by aldora89 Stranded on the planet Sigma Nox while searching for a missing away team, Spock and Kirk find themselves pitted against a disturbing native life form. Four times the Enterprise Crew didn´t realize that their commanding officers were married to each other and one time they finally found out (4130 words) by razzleberryicedtea In which Spock and Jim casually forget to mention that they are married, and the Enterprise crew is too oblivious to notice on their own

A Star to Steer By (32043 words) by Borealisblue Kidnapped, injured, and headed towards Romulan space, Kirk could only be grateful that his last act was saving Spock from the same fate. And all it had cost was a stolen kiss.

An Open Secret (3495 words) by TransScribe Amanda Grayson knew her son. She could read him, easily. That might've been why she had suspicions about his relationship long before he said anything. It was more likely because subtlety was not a trait Spock had inherited.

Take My Hand (My Whole Life Too) (5981 words) by pastmydancingdays Whilst in one of the most dangerous situations of his life, Jim Kirk came to a realisation that he should have had a very long time ago. Two, in fact, and he was about to let neither go to waste. A potential epilogue to Amok Time.

Ashayam (3378 words) by Willowe Spock knows he has no right to refer to Jim as any sort of endearment, even in the privacy of his own thoughts. If he had only listened to this logic he wouldn't find himself in this position, standing on the bridge having just called his captain "ashayam".

AOS, AU Canon-Divergence. Spock, Kirk and the other valiant members of the Emergency Personnel Ambulance Service fight to save lives and turn the tide of the ongoing war against Nero and his fleet before it’s too late. Such a beautiful slow burn for Spock and Kirk.

AOS. Follow on from 2009, Kirk, Spock and the rest deal with the aftermath of Nero’s attack and rebuilding after the decimation of the ‘Fleet and Academy. An exciting tale with twists and turns involving black ops, bad-mirals, action, love and fierce loyalty.

SNW. A phenomenal Spirk fic in which Kirk is stuck in Spock's mind while the crew work to find a way to retrieve his body. A wonderful getting to know you/falling for you hard tale. Wonderfully written and highly entertaining.

Evolution by Rhaegal (RhaegalKS) Words: 149,293

AOS. Covering the first year of their 5 year mission, this is totally flawless. The character voices are perfection, the prose spectacular. The whole thing plays like an AOS movie. It’s phenomenal.

Emotions by LadyRa Words: 35,569

TOS. Spock gets drugged on a shore leave and is overwhelmed with its effects. Kirk tries to pick up the pieces. A beautiful, and wonderfully grounded, story of realising how much they mean to each other.

And When the Bond Breaks by LadyRa Words: 24,631

TOS. Spock takes out a shuttle to investigate an anomaly and returns to an Enterprise that’s not his own. Time travel shenanigans with such emotional depth that it will traumatise you in the best way. Stunningly good!

TOS/TNG. Such a very special fic. Epic in its scope, it covers the entire timeline of Spirk from their very first meeting through to a  clever and satisfying Generations fix-it ending. It provides extra scenes, additional dialogue and internal monologues to expand on existing canon in a really compelling and effective way. Truly this is my new TOS canon.

AOS. After Beyond, The crew investigate sudden climate change on a frozen planet and find more than they bargained for. The perfect mix of great plot, fun original characters, action, mystery, world building and deep deep love.

TOS. A really compelling character study of James T. Kirk. An excellent companion piece to City on the Edge of Forever. Exploring what Jim and Spock got up to, and all they had to overcome, while trying to find Bones and their way back home.

Time After Time by spaceisgay (ChancellorGriffin) Words: 138,921

SNW. Kirk spends a 6 month rotation on the Enterprise as part of his command training. OK, if there’s a favourite of my favourites then this may be it. It’s such a stunning version of their love story, with a beautifully constructed plot. It runs the emotional gamut from moments that will have you laughing out loud to moments that will have you in floods of tears. 

milk and honey by spaceisgay (ChancellorGriffin) Words: 28,651

SNW. Kirk and Spock meet for the first time when they wake up in a prison cell together. A really fun, and extremely clever, version of the ‘aliens made them do it’ trope. It’s intriguing and funny with a real depth of feeling throughout.

The Promised Land by gunstreet Words: 58,260 @gunstreet

TOS. A story that explores the time Jim and Spock spent apart between the end of the 5 year mission and TMP. It’s a beautiful story of reunion and renewal of love. Sometimes achingly sad, but it’s worth it for the happy ending.

all of it but especially jim talking to nineteen year old spock and telling him to choose starfleet because he's waiting for him. in the vulcan mountains. while they're watching the sunrise.

3. Favorite line/scene you wrote this year

OOOH uhhh maybe them fooling around in the aura on the beach in Bare Your Faces of the Veil because I enjoyed writing the dialogue AND even though the writing never matches what I have in my head I hope I got across to some extent the acid trippy psychodelic type of thing I was imagining- like banging inside an electric purple aura on a phosphorescent beach- GROOVY. I would love to see it animated in a 60s style you know Jefferson Airplane in the background lol.

Favorite line- I think my McCoy lines tend to stand out:

“Ah.” Bones nodded, stroking his chin. “I see. So you got close to Spock finally after three years of stifling sexual tension and you want to know if two and two actually equals four. Jim, we’re onto quantum calculus now. It’s FOUR.”
