Expanding a thought from a conversation this morning:

In general, I think "Is X out-of-character?" is not a terribly useful question for a writer. It shuts down possibility, and interesting directions you could take a character.

A better question, I believe, is "What would it take for Character to do X?" What extremity would she find herself in, where X starts to look like a good idea? What loyalties or fears leave him with X as his only option? THAT'S where a potentially interesting story lies.

In practice, I find that you can often justify much more from a character than you initially dreamed you could: some of my best stories come from "What might drive Character to do [thing he would never do]?" As long as you make it clear to the reader what the hell pushed your character to this point, you've got the seed of a compelling story on your hands.

So I (Cerule4n, 7 sweeps) h4ve recently been trying to follow my 4ncestor’s(T) leg4cy. They were some form of writer le4ving behind m4ny p4ges of v4rious r4mblings 4nd texts in their hive. Much of it is 4bout some film c4lled “The N4vidz 4ccount”?. 

I've l4tely been trying to recover 4nd complete their works on this film. Finding leftover texts from T is e4sy enough. Nobody bothered to cle4r out or demolish their hive even 4fter 4ll this time. However I c4n find no record of the film's existence. I 4m unsure if it even existed.

Their writings come 4cross 4s if they've flipped their thinkp4n sever4l times over. They go off on long t4ngents 4nd seem completely ins4ne h4lf the time. 4nd not to even mention the content of the film itself of some troll going ins4ne 4bout his hive’s dimensions not m4tching up or something?

I think I've fucked up setting out to go over T’s “leg4cy”. I feel like I'm going ins4ne too. I've been forgetting to e4t or sleep. 4nd I c4n't get rid of the feeling th4t something is w4tching right behind me. My 4ncestor spoke of things like this too 4nd I don't know wh4t to do. 

The sh4dows seem to h4ve depth. I'm not sure if I c4n trust my own sense of re4lity 4nymore. 4nd I don't know if it's bec4use of these d4mn p4ges left over from my 4ncestor or if I've fin4lly sn4pped 4nd 4m looking for something to bl4me it on.
