Challenge yourself. Sometimes, on order to achieve more than average results you have no choice but to push even your own capabilities. As I start training for potentially my first #powerlifting meet since 2017 I'm doing ANYTHING to SQUEEZE out reps and not "just" get #strong, but to also put some nice, thick #muscle on me. That's why after all medium and #highvolume #squat days, I'm now performing #dropsets of that day's first warmup set for 10 - 20 reps. So here's 152.5x10, done a minute or two after hitting 255x4x4 on the @roguefitness #yokebar. This is REAL #coretraining. In this case, I didn't have safeties because I was (unreasonably) confident in the weight and wanted to practice with the mono. I didn't stay with the bar because I just couldn't react fast enough. As soon as I felt it slipping I was pretty much #deerinheadlights mode and just froze. Obviously that's all on me; it was an awful mistake and I'm grateful to Big Tex for not just kicking me out then! And I'm also grateful that no one (myself included) was hurt. One of my best #benchpress nights in a while. Most of my training from last night is was filmed minus things like #bandedpullaparts, #chinups and #planks. But the important stuff is all here. One thing to remember when setting up to bench, is to make sure your whole body is AIR FREAKING TIGHT before you even unrack the bar. Keep it tight throughout the movement. Squeeze those #glutes, squeeze your #legs, keep your #scapula retracted at ALL TIMES. You'll be amazed at how much you can bench. Remember that #strength is a skill. Fire up the #motorpatterns correctly at the rest comes easily. There's a lot to be said about #instinctivetraining, as @boninierik so eloquently put it just last week. So how the hell do you exactly train by...feel? Is it even possible?? Of course it is! But I do recommend learning as much as you can about all types of training, and then making it into your own. That's how I realized that breaking up reps in groups based on the desired #intensity can be optimal not "just" for #strength , but also for #musclemass. Here's quick tip on #restperiods. Sure, the standard window for resting between sets is between 1 -3 minutes if #musclemass is the goal and 3 - 5 minutes if you're going for #strength. But in terms of a hybrid routine like #powerbodybuilding, don't worry about that stuff. This is not to say hang out for 20 minutes between sets! But as @mikeohearn once said, take your time. The goal, especially with increasing the amount of sets you perform and decreasing the amount of reps you hit per set, is that you'll come back each set with enough energy to bang those reps out. That's REAL Power Bodybuilding, not performing a #compoundmovement for a few sets and then hitting light work. It's primarily about going all out on that big move and getting as much as you can out of it. That's were the size AND the strength REALLY come from! I recently conducted a poll on #autoregulation, as it'll be the basis of the new intermediate level #powerbodybuilding program I'm experimenting with. I used my own judgement to decide the amount of sets and reps when I perform the major #compoundmovements depending on whether I'm in a light, medium or heavy week. So here, on this heavy week, I decided to perform 300x5x1. This is 85% of my 1RM and perhaps, the next time I go heavy, I'll try to reach higher if I feel I can. Good morning! Are you ready to smash your goals this week? Here's a tip I learned a while ago from @phdeadlift regarding #latactivation while setting up for the #squat. Start by simply grabbing on to the bar from the front, you hands in a suppinated (underhanded) grip, your arms at shoulder width. From there, while still holding the bar, bring yourself under the bar and up against it. From there you may adjust your hands accordingly. I felt that my lats were engaged immediately, which definitely helped with keeping me stable with the bar in my back. Try this if you have problems keeping your lats engaged and tell me if this works for you. Also, friendly reminder that I am available for online coaching.
