Checking In
“Remind me again, why Serenity Manor wasn’t an option…”
You ask this question for the fifth time that day, stumbling into Beel. The sixth-born Avatar of Gluttony motions for you to hand over the three luggage bags you were currently attempting to lug into the lobby of an extremely grand hotel. You watch, catching your breath, as Beel lifts the bags with much more ease; walking calmly over to the nearest human bellboy. You can’t help but find him so adorable, oblivious to the bellboy’s nervous surprise at the demon’s superhuman strength. The bellboy’s voice is, unluckily, the only sound that isn’t coming from your boisterous, troublemaking family.
You continue making your case to Lucifer as you turn away from Leviathan and Belphegor – who are stood behind you, enamoured with a fishtank built into the wall and some plush, velvet-lined sofas; respectively.
“Lucifer,” you start. “You know I love you guys… ”
Lucifer is at the reception desk and looking disapprovingly at Mammon and Asmodeus, who are ‘ooh-ing’ and ‘ah-ing’ at a fancy-looking vase, at the same time as he rifles through his waist bag for a booking he insisted on printing. Even though it was so much easier to just show the online confirmation.
“… But we’re, like, historically prone to making a scene.”
As if on cue, the sound of pottery shattering echoes throughout the hotel lobby… followed by stammering from Mammon and a high-pitched squeal from Asmo. The bellboy shrieks and scurries away with the trolley of your luggage as soon as Beel takes his eyes off him - looking instead at his older brothers disapprovingly. Shaking his head, Beel jogs over to where they’re standing and immediately crouches down to tidy the shattered, ceramic hazard off the floor. He has the sweetest of intentions - declaring simply that he’ll take care of the broken vase shards so no one cuts themselves on them - but you have your doubts about his methods when you hear the sound of crunching and see porcelain pieces sticking out of his mouth. Mammon and Asmo not-so-subtlely stand over their younger brother, hiding him from view.
The hotel receptionist gives Lucifer a look. With a wordless sigh, Lucifer hands over his credit card to pay for the damages.
“I had hoped,” the eldest brother strains that word, the two of you watching a very large price appear across the till screen, “that your presence here would at least be enough to tone down their childishness. I see now that wish was just folly.”
Next to him is Satan, who eyes the reading material on the coffee table next to the sofa Belphie had deemed comfy enough to nap on. The Avatar of Wrath huffs. “Folly isn’t exactly new with you, Lucifer. But you still haven’t answered MC’s question: why aren’t we at Serenity Manor?”
“Unfortunately, this time, I don’t have a clear answer, myself.” Lucifer explains. Satan lets out a snort, which the eldest ignores. “Diavolo requested specifically that we stay at a hotel. Something about… ‘human, brother-ly bonding traditions’. Those were the words.”
At this point, Belphie has begun to chew on one of the sofa’s pillows in his sleep, feathers all over his face. The receptionist - hand outstretched towards Lucifer with the intent to hand back the credit card - freezes at the sight. The Avatar of Pride sighs again, motioning to the receptionist to just charge damages to the card.
MC suddenly paled.
“… Ah.” They stated tentatively. The winced a little under the powerful, combined gaze of Satan and Lucifer. “Then this… may have been… my fault…?”
“Explain.” Lucifer frowned.
“Well, Prince Diavolo and I had tea about a week ago. He asked about human families after I said that the Manor and House of Lamentation were a lot bigger than normal human houses and I may… have mentioned…”
MC’s voice got quieter.
“That brothers sometimes… share a room.”
Lucifer and Satan froze.
“So. We’re a social experiment for His Highness, then. Wonderful.” Satan concludes bitterly, ignoring a brief glare from Lucifer. Though, it’s not as if the eldest wasn’t sharing some of the sentiment himself, now digging through his waist bag of Beel’s food receipts and strangers’ phone numbers (given to Asmo) with extreme fury. He mumbles bitterly under his breath about how ”Lord Diavolo hadn’t mentioned sharing rooms”.
Satan tries to look to the magazine he had seen earlier for something to salvage the day…
… But Levi had gotten to it first. Now it has a few pages torn out. Manga-style doodles are on each page, including Henry and the Lord of Shadows holding hands and eating from the same ice cream in crudely scribbled boxer shorts - right out of a beach episode.
Satan looks at you. You look at the receptionist. The receptionist looks at Lucifer.
Lucifer sighs for what will certainly not be the last time today.
“Just… charge whatever you require to that card.”
(i wanted to imagine these guys on a family vacation, causing a scene in the human realm. i like the idea of mc just saying things and diavolo is just like ‘yes i like this i shall now make my subjects do it and they shall find it fun’.)
#when triworlds goes on vacay its like that scene in the manga#where beel takes a pic of his family vs the triworlds fam#chaos vs order#they have a printed AND online version of the booking and dia totally rubs it in lucis face#triworlds have no issues - the brothers got lost in the hotel building day one#obey me headcanons#obey me writing#obey me lucifer#obey me leviathan#obey me mammon#obey me satan#obey me asmodeus#obey me beelzebub#obey me belphegor#fluff#obey me fluff#obey me mc#obey me#obey me nightbringer#obey me shall we date

Sorry if this is an annoying question, but how is the scarlet witch comic doing with sales right now? I’m worried it might get canceled because of a tweet the writer posted like a year or more ago that the series wasn’t doing too hot (apologies if this is too vague). That being said I’m not going to buy any of the comics due to the boycott.
You are no less capable than me of looking up sales information on your own.
As far as I know, the book is guaranteed another six issues, including this month's. There are listings for up to #10, plus the trade paperback. It's too soon to say what will happen after that-- it's almost half a year away. We probably won't get a clear idea of what's next until February, January at the earliest.
Generally speaking, books like Scarlet Witch-- a solo title for a character who, popular though she may be, has never had a long-form ongoing series-- are always in danger of getting cancelled. Sales are a big part of that, but it's honestly pretty arbitrary. I do remember Orlando saying, pretty early in the run, that he wasn't sure how long the series would go for, and reminding readers that preorders are the best way to guarantee its longevity. That might sound grim, but it's unfortunately pretty normal. I believe in this case, it was in response to a fan question along the lines of "will we see so-and-so," with the answer being, "if the series runs long enough and there's time to include them, but it's too soon to promise anything." Again, that's a standard outlook for this type of book.
So, if you're thinking of a post from last year, that might be what you're remembering. It doesn't mean the book was doing poorly, only that keeping the sales numbers up is, unfortunately vital. And right now, if you count both volumes of SW, plus Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver, Orlando's run is set to break a record at 24 issues, and has been consistently in publication for two and half years, with only a brief hiatus in the middle. That's the longest ongoing title Wanda's ever had, by a significant margin. I think that's a sign of success, and I'm grateful for it, no matter where it ends. I wish more people were focused on that.
I do think that relaunching the series in the middle was a mistake, and it definitely makes the numbers look worse than they are. The most recent issues have not been top sellers, but that decline is not unusual at this point in a longer run. But people on social media, particularly twitter, have a really bad attitude about this book and are constantly going out of their way to create a negative atmosphere in the fandom. Fearmongering that the book will be cancelled is absolutely a part of that. It's not worth engaging with.
#i don't have sales numbers off the top of my head but i know you can find them online if you look. But I genuinely don't have enough insight#to accurately compare digital sales vs print.#And I have no way of knowing how likely a book is to get cancelled-- even based on numbers-- bc it is famously arbitrary and often quite#unfair

"transmascs vs transfems" online infighting is so fucking weird. my interactions with transfems irl are like... I went to your art showing and bought a print and we talked about art and tattoos. We had board game night with your dad. You were in a play with my boyfriend and then invited us to your birthday party. You helped me through a panic attack at Pride. You brought me to the trans/GNC support group thing when I was an egg. We watched each other's backs at protests. You came out a decade after college and I messaged you to say congrats, same hat, I'm trans too, and we caught up and it was nice. You spoke at a rally and I cried. We commiserated about not finding clothes that fit and I offered to tailor some things for you. We went to karaoke night and you sang Sinatra and killed it.
real normal/positive shit. I'm not trying to dismiss anyone's experiences, online or irl. just trying to maintain some perspective, I guess, because it's real easy to look at tumblr and get the impression that we're beefing all the time.

wait can I just complain for a second bc this is kind of pissing me off a little but the only available editions you can find online of jj grandville's les metamorphoses du jour (1829) are 1850s and 1860s editions, which afaict are Not the original lithographs but rather engraving reproductions of them (which is touched on briefly here). which I had assumed just meant it would be a slightly different quality or have other slight differences, which would only be mildly frustrating to me except for the fact that I've been comparing the versions in this 1854 edition of the book on gallica with what (as far as I know) are original lithograph prints here in the british museum collections because some of the ones in the gallica edition were striking me as like Noticably not 1820s-30s in vibe and. they seem to have been straight up 'modernizing' the clothing in these 1850s reproductions??
(first version (1829) vs later version (1854))
hi hello what happened to the entire shape of her dress & sleeves??? and to his fall front & trouser straps??
(first version / later version)
this is literally a different dress?
😐.
this wouldn't annoy me so much (and in fact I would actually enjoy comparing & find it really interesting) except for the fact that as far as I've been able to tell there's no place (online at least) where you can see all of the original illustrations -- the british museum only has a few, & same with other places -- so some/most of these images seem to only exist (digitally I mean) in their 'updated' 1850s versions. and in fact some sites list the later version as being the the 1829 versions! I just want to see 1829 clothing is that too much to ask
#through gritted teeth I'm not using the word victorian or victorianizing here bc this is french & the term doesn't apply but. Extremely#victorian thing to do to be honest (derogatory)#thoughts#clothes#also the book itself doesn't seem to mention they've changed anything at all#& still list it as being by jj grandville#(worth noting it was also published after the artist had died. which is a little. well)#anyways if anyone knows where i can find the full set of originals I'll owe you my life

Ok, so ... you have that same position for fanart, right?
Do you buy fanart? Do you commission your favorite fandom pairing? Do you support the Patreon or Ko-fis of fanartists? Do you go to Artist Alleys at conventions and comic cons for art prints? Do you buy homemade plushies of fandom characters? Do you buy fandom clothing, jewelry, or costume pieces made by independent artists?
If you answered yes to any of these then fanfiction can and should also be sold.
Fanfiction is not different than any other fan craft. It is no more illegal than any other fan craft that almost everyone here is definitely supporting.
If fanartists can sell their works online or in person, if they can have tip jars for people to express appreciation, then so can fanauthors.
But if you're going to maintain the position that you can't offer tips to fanauthors and you can't let fanauthors sell printed copies of their own works, then STOP supporting all fanartists right now.
Stop going to conventions and buying prints. Stop buying homemade plushies. Stop buying homemade jewelry and clothing and costumes if it has anything to do with an existing IP.
Let Artist's Alley collapse.
Do you see how hypocritical this is?
You can either have both, or none at all. That fanfiction somehow deserves less support than other crafts directly leads to the impression that it's the lesser art form. A03's practices of denying support for authors contributes to this.
I'm not saying that A03 doesn't do good work, but it is NOT all sunshine and roses (they recently advocated for AI, btw). There are negative consequences ... like the fact that so many people visit A03 but you're all only out there reblogging pictures and not stories.
The fact that not one single fanfic advocate is pointing out this discrepancy between fanfic and fanart sends the message that writing is not real art. It's a continuation of the deep belief that fanfic and fanauthors don't deserve your support, your reblogs, your comments, or your sharing of their works because written words aren't as good as visual art. I wonder why fanfic authors are out there crying about not getting recognition?
This is part of why they don't.
Selling fanfic is not more dangerous than selling fanart. It's the same inherent risk. Why aren't any of you pointing it out? Why aren't any of you advocating for some kind of positive change that allows support of fanfiction, instead of stonewalling every single attempt to elevate fanfiction to the level of fanart, as it deserves?
This is a problem. The position that "no one can sell fanfic" (false), is not a good position, and it needs to be called out. More of you need to be saying, "wow, it's too bad that it's so hard to sell physical copies of my fanfic," not "thou shalt never sell fanfic ever."
If fanfiction can only exist if it's free, then fanart can only exist if it's free, and we know the latter just isn't true.
I'm all for keeping fanfic and fanart free for viewing and reading online. At no point should any of this ever be gatekept behind some paywall - I'm looking at you, Patreon artists with your fanart how-tos and nsfw fanart locked away behind pay schemes. But tip jars if you liked something? Yes. Physical copies that you can either order or buy in person? Yes. Commissions of something specific that isn't already made? Yes!
Is the environment perfect for selling fanfiction? No, of course not and I don't say that it is. But we should be trying to get there. At the very least, we should be TALKING ABOUT IT, not running scared because you "can't" (you CAN). You cannot answer to me that "it's illegal" if you support any other kind of fan craft.
THAT'S the real misinformation - that no one acknowledges authors should be able to sell their works too because it is not different.
Authors should be able to set up an Artist's Alley table and sell printed copies of their work. They should be able to have tip jars.
Btw, if you're an author who wants a tip jar, you can go create one RIGHT NOW - just link your A03 to an intermediate hub like tumblr or instagram. You can offer your bound copies there too, if that's something you want to do.
I am never not going to keep pointing this out. All I ever see is this one, stale tune and nobody trying to do better. And look, if you never support fan stuffs ever because it's "illegal" then all the power to you, and this essay isn't for you.
This essay is for the hypocrites who support visual art but not written words. I see you and I'm calling the bluff. I demand better for our writers, and I'm not afraid of saying so. Your position devalues fanfiction and puts authors at a disadvantage. It says "we'll pay artists because they deserve something for what they do, but you authors better keep cranking out those words for me." You should be working create better environments for writers.
STOP SELLING BOUND FANFICTION
I cannot blame them for pulling their works, in fact I'm proud of them for doing so. Fanfiction is a community of gifting. As authors we write fics and share our works for free. Fanfiction is a weird, fragile, liminal space that can crumble at any time. This fragility needs to be respected.
If you want fanfiction to be around for you to enjoy, then the rules need to be respected!
You can bind fics. You can gift bound fics. DO NOT SELL BOUND FICS!!
Or soon we won't have fanfiction anymore and the world will be much darker for it.
#people throw around Anne Rice's name like she's the boogeyman#I was there and I'm yawning about it. I. demand. BETTER#yes fanfic is illegal and so what? so is fanart#if you can sell one you can sell the other. and so here we are#AUTHORS CAN AND SHOULD SELL THEIR OWN FANFIC#AUTHORS CAN AND SHOULD HAVE TIP JARS#people should be pointing out the barriers and working to remove them or find ways around them#not drinking the koolaid that you 'can't'#reprint that argument using 'fanart' instead of 'fanfic' and you sound ridiculous#I would absolutely buy nice printed copies of fanfic straight from the author if that option was there#I buy prints of art I've already seen online#I buy physical graphic novels of stories I've already read online#I would do the same with fanfic and I bet lots of other people would too if they WOKE UP#what gets me the most tho? isn't that it's hard or 'illegal' (just like fanart)#it's that nobody tries and nobody is talking about the different treatment of art vs words#I would be a lot more charitable if people WERE. if they were TRYING#but they're just not. they've already given up and fallen over dead#commentary#fanfiction#if you're gonna attack authors who want tip jars then I expect you to go after all the fanartists and take them down too#if there is no consistency here then there is simply no argument

Hello!! I'm very new to online comics!! Is it better to buy Sacred Bodies from Short Box Comic Fair, or to wait for you to sell your own copies? Do you get more money from one of the options? I will do whatever is best!!
this is very kind of you to consider!
off the top of my head, the pros/cons of each options are incremental. I generally stand to make a little more profit from the sale of a physical book, but I also find it important to support the ShortBox Comic Fair and its organiser, as the percentile cut they get from sales will likely go back into growing the Fair (or just supporting Zainab for all her amazing work on this and past events).
I offer physical books because I print them for conventions anyway, and I personally like collecting and reading physical copies of comic books.
I'm happy for the choice of PDF vs physical book to be in the hands of the buyer and their preferences for how they want to acquire/read the story. :}

I'm so fond of this painting that I made it into a print! It's my first time doing a print on matte paper instead of glossy, but it works really well with the visually textured traditional art (and it's nice to touch!)
You can get it from my online shop, or grab it in person at Terrificon in CT next month!

Apparently the print-on-demand company I use to sell calendars doesn't allow people from outside the US and Canada to buy the specific product I made. I need to make a whole other product to sell it to any other country in the world. I think it has to do with paper sizes (Letter vs A1).
Sadly, I discovered this when a customer got tired of waiting for their product, and I discovered several settings that made that they never got their refund and also landed in my spam box, and I feel crappy for making them feel that way. There are so many tweaks you have to make with online stores and I feel like I'm discovering new problems every week.
I'm sad that I had to cancel and refund the orders of European customers. I think I found a way to stop international sales for now, but it would take me a while to make the changes needed so the products are available everywhere. Time and energy that I don't have right now.
I chose to work with these companies because it seemed easier than to print and ship them myself, but I still hadn't anticipated the other problems that can only be created when you automate everything.
Anyway, if you're from outside of the US and Canada and have bought, or wanted to buy a calendar, I'm sorry to say it's not possible for now.
