One of the best sword wielders in Westeros, the author says he would pick her to defend him. Has a cool sword called Oathkeeper. Manages to go up against 7 fighters and take out most of them,. The only true knight; First off, talking about book brienne, they massacred show brienne, the show runners simply didn’t understand what she’s about.“ She had no chance against seven, she knew. No chance, and no choice” brienne had plenty of choice but she couldn’t leave people to die. The chivalric paradigm is rotten and corrupted, but here is Brienne, the one true knight, who isn’t even a actual knight! “knights are for killing”, but here is a knight who risks her life again and again to protect innocents! Bri IS hope, she is the light in the dark that shows that things can be better, things must be better. Fundamentally an idealist: “Winter will never come for the likes of us. Then after cutting the sumo's not knot, she uses her great acting skills to win the crowd to her side by playing the innocent maiden and being all "oh, no, what have I done?" (She knew exactly what she did >:) After her country is free, she also gets to enjoy being girly and mellow once everyone is able to relax, and everyone respects that side of her too. All of this at just 22 years of age, what a cool lady

This boy not just studied the blade, he learned the blade FROM HIS CRUSH. And not only that but he actually has tons of symbolism around BOTH of the swords he wields over the course of the novel. His childhood sword gets broken when he's about to be thrown into his corruption arc, but the pieces are carefully preserved by his crush, and later he rebuilds the sword in question. Once he is fully freed from corrupting influence of his other sword, he uses this one again! It represents his inner goodness that gets broken, but is never really gone. The other is a cursed sword representing toxic masculinity that corrupts his mind and pushes him to harm himself and others. It gets destroyed in the end thru the power of gay love!

His sword is first broken symbolizing his trauma and loss of innocence when he is kicked into hell. Then his other sword, Xin Mo, which he finds in hell, represents toxic masculinity and he breaks it at the climax of the novel. It can also dimension travel and is evil.

Binghe has two different songs in this book and a complicated relationship with both of them. First there is Zhen Yang which breaks at a dramatic moment and is mourned over by his teacher/love interest "like a grieving widow". And then there's Xin Mo! His "golden finger". The most ridiculously overpowered sword in the world, it can even cut rifts in the fabric of the world. It also runs on sex and violence and drives him to madness which can only be cured by the aforementioned love interest sacrificing himself... or by sex!

Snowdrift: Both are level headed people within their respective groups, have weather theming, are really cute, have a sassy side, Kiku tends to be high strung and Nami is good at helping people relax.

It's pride month! Let's make a list of One Piece characters I head cannon as in the LGBT+ community!

First up is the Captain himself, Luffy

Don't go getting too hot ladies and gents, this bachelor is off the market.

My opinion is that Luffy is Aro/Ace (not that one).

The reality is that unless you are food, friends, or adventure then you probably won't find yourself meaning much of anything to this delightfully joyous fellow.

In short the man has things to do and none of those things include sex or romance.

Yamato values his strength and values sincerity. He's fun loving and always looking for excitement in life. He found those values presented in his biggest idol, Oden. So it is my opinion that he did not change to be more like Oden but found courage in being himself because he discovered Oden.

Kiku lives her life unashamedly herself. She makes no fuss or muss about it either.

I have no head cannon regarding her sexuality as I got no vibes during my time watching her on screen of one or another but Kiku is, not just by my opinion but canonically, transgender.

Strong, elegant, and thoughtful her path in life did not take away from any of her responsibilities or ther seriousness in which she takes them. One of the ayakaza 9 samurai sworn ro protect Oden and his family. They certainly didn't have any I'll feelings towards her and her identity so why should anyone else.

🌻A flurry of flowers🪻

Sorry for not posting for a bit! This weekend was downright exhausting, and I get drained a lot easier than most people, so I was taking some time to recuperate! I feel a bit better now! ∑d(°∀°d) Here's another drawing, this time with some flower symbolism! Please pardon if this is messily written, I'm still a bit tired. (o´▽`o)

I've wanted to refine the flowers used to represent Kouko and Inuyasha in my fanwork for a while now, since I've always had a vague idea, but never been entirely 100% set on what to use! We all know about Kouko's hydrangeas, but I thought it'd be fun to look a bit deeper and see what else I could find that could fit these two! (I also might use it for a little project I want to with them in the near future! 👀)

I wanted at least 2 flowers for each of them! I'm not entirely happy with how this piece came out, but it's alright! Practice makes perfect, and I finally learned a good technique to draw hydrangeas, so I'd say even if I'm not completely satisfied with it, the skill I learned was worth it! ⸜(*ˊᗜˋ*)⸝ Let's talk about some flowers!

Kouko is mainly represented by hydrangeas flower-wise, but I was also thinking about wisteria! Blue/Blue-purple wisteria in specific! It symbolizes balance, calmness, and serenity! Which definitely fits her energy really well!

Inuyasha was a challenge, because a lot of flowers we see him with end up being spider lilies, which I associate way more with Kikyo than him. Those massively represent death, wisdom, and the afterlife, which is way more in Kikyo's wheelhouse than his in any way.

So for Inuyasha I ended up landing on Red Camellias and Sunflowers (Ironically) to represent and symbolize him!

Red Camellias are symbolic of passion and love, as well as occasionally loyalty and inner strength, which I think fits pretty well!

Sunflowers symbolize strength, longevity, and loyalty! And as someone who has grown them before, they're definitely a hardy and stubborn plant! So it's a great fit for him with how he can be! LMAO (And it matches his eyes! (ᵔ⩊ᵔ))

And for their relationship as a whole, while I still obviously use cherry blossoms all the time, since they're absolutely iconic and the go-to romantic flower, I actually think I'll also occasionally use Ume blossoms too, specifically for drawings of them earlier on before they solidify their relationship! Ume (Aka plum/apricot blossoms), are the first flowers to bloom at the end of winter, so they're a sign of change and resilience. They're a herald of change into warmer times, and tend to be used as a sign of hope and renewal, which I definitely think could represent these two! It isn't actually a symbol of love, though! However, it actually blooms in the months before cherry blossoms, so that just makes the symbolism of it regarding InuKou WAY more fitting with how their love grows between them gradually over time! 💚

It's funny, because with all of these flowers combined, InuKou actually consists of a majority of the main seasonal flowers in Japan! The only one missing is Kiku, aka chrysanthemums! Which I might give to Kurohyo as a symbol of hers to complete the layout and timeline! LMAO

Like his design rules first of all. I love that he’s a fishman that hides his identity by looking like a kappa. He’s so responsible and such a good foster dad to Hiyori. A Tale of Two Hannya: Flowers Without Names

Last time we dabbled in this area we made it clear we were just scratching the surface. I have a lot I want to say about how Kiku & Yamato play off of each other and how it plays into manga’s long history of playing with gender. We’ve already brought up the classic series on the right, Revolutionary Girl Utena, and how Yamato sorta falls into some of the same pitfalls of the iconic princely lady. But I don’t think this discussion is complete without acknowledging another very important landmark shoujo that still casts a long shadow today. The Rose of Versailles, an iconic 70s series starring the dashing Lady Oscar. Raised as a man to inherit her father’s spot in the royal guard and her “Anthy,” fitting for a story told with the backdrop of the French Revolution, is none other than Marie Antoinette.

So here’s our thesis. Famously the intent of Rose wasn’t initially Oscar. Antoinette was supposed to be the protagonist but was upstaged by such a novel heroine for the time. Utena was the deconstruction of what spawned in her wake. Wano’s Hannya duo? A wickedly smart evolution that’s actually quite responsive to contemporary social changes.

Oscar really does seem like she ended up being this accidental icon, but for all the glory and passion her story is so often wound up in how she can never really escape being sucked in to “women’s games.” It’s a solid recipe; she’s remarkable as a guard & soldier but situations force her to deal with things as a woman. Contrast between battle and courtroom intrigue. It’s a very old school type of feminist work. Similar tone if a different structure than Kozue in the slightly earlier Attack No.1 and a lot of our Pinkie Violence heroines. Deep down there’s always that “A woman is still a woman” element. That’s fallen out of fashion as more feminist depictions have become normal, but there’s a certain power in that internal dynamic. 

The appeal was just seeing a female lead doing cool shit. And this parallels a lot of world media from the 60s/70s. Still pretty old fashioned gender expectations but seeing women buck them at all was fresh. Thing is...give it twenty years and new issues crop up. By the 90s we have a generation that grew up on things like Rose of Versailles and analogues to the point this action girl tomboy is just a trope. A trope bordering on cliche. A trope that allowed how we write most women to stagnate. Love interests, mothers, etc. didn’t have to get with the times. Just toss in a girl that does cool guy things and you’re golden! Most copycats lacked the balance that made Rose so iconic.  Enter Utena, so far ahead of the curve. I’ve heard her described as revolutionary even.

The titular Utena is a fairy tale character in the real world. She is a perfect lil Mary Sue, but the more the story matures the more it becomes obvious a fairy tale character lacks the sense to pick up on real issues. That’s Utena’s magic; juxtaposing the uber cool main character with the actual scary forces in the world. Leading to an ending that lets seemingly useless, docile Anthy drive the point home. A character like Utena can inspire strength...but most girls are going to have to learn other tactics. “Utena” is the Japanese word for Calyx, the outer part of a flower bud that protects it. Smash the world’s shell...

Revolutionary for the time, ahead of the curve in so many ways. But its 30 years old now. We’re at a point it isn’t rare to see casual critique of leaning on the action girl tomboy as a crutch. Nothing new under the Sun, we’ve been here before. It’ll swing that way until a new generation thinks Peppermint Patty is subversive again. And that’s the landscape One Piece got to have fun with.

Which brings us to our pair of breakout new faces in Wano. One of the biggest changes to stories that play with gender roles in this day and age is the reality we pay more attention to why some people organically feel that way. Yamato’s still playing this trope straight. Very straight actually. Background is totally on par with Oscar and the way you go about it feels very similar...for the most part. Could say the same about Utena, Yams is someone who kept that spark of nobility equivalent well into adulthood. There is definitely not a “woman is still a woman” angle with Yamato. The bath scene is a great example. No, you just don’t have that modesty. 

Kiku has that element though, in spades. Her story runs on it. What was old fashioned becomes forward thinking now by combining two tropes. Let the girly trans woman have that old theme if it isn’t as relevant anymore for most women. Same logic I’d use to say she makes a great quartermaster template. It’d be an eyeroll to make most female crewmates the one swabbing the deck or doing laundry in establishing shots...not so much if it’s Kiku. Which gives a cool edge, what’s stifling for some is liberating for others. 

That said...looking at the two together I can’t unsee the gentle repudiation of the very extreme end “all that matters at all is what you say your are” mindset. We’re not getting into discourse here, I’m just identifying trends that exist regardless of how you may feel about them. One Piece is far, far, far from the only reflection the pendulum is swinging the other way even within the community. Yamato’s treated more on the same tier as like, Bon & Iva. He does feel a little more like a caricature at points. And I do think part of the way they’re used together is making a statement about their relative journeys. How certain aspects can feel like Yamato gets the best of both worlds and Kiku the worst. Yamato doesn’t have to care because at worst you’ll think he’s silly instead of creepy and for meeting that impossible bar of being the perfect lady as good as anyone in Wano...Kiku’s “prize” is having to juggle two sets of lofty expectations.  

I feel like Oda really knew what he was doing here. Knew teenage battle shonen fans would bend over backwards to make excuses for Yamato and aggressively ignore Kiku. If OP Academy’s pulling the same trick this was clearly the intent. Both play with the expectations of that generic Strong Female Character archetype One Piece has generally avoided. Oda’s great at writing women but seems to feel that action girl tomboy is a crutch too. We’ll probably revisit this one down the line. It’s a deep well and one that’s delicate to talk about. But I wanted to end this tour of my drafts page for the last year with a bang.

Her goal is to find and collect all legendary swords and to keep them out of criminals hands. She is stated to have the demeanor and honor of a samurai, which shows how deep being a swordsman is to her character. She tries to fight against misogyny and prove her worth, even when people underestimate her.

She was the best swordsman at her dojo even though she was only like 13. She and her best friend promised to become the greatest swordsman in the world one day, and she would have if she didn’t trip down some stairs and die young

She aimed to be the best swordsman but tragically died as a kid, becoming the drive of Zoro, one of the main characters

All she wanted was to be one a great swordsman but even though she was great everyone looked down on her for being a woman

She grew up with her father as the master of a dojo. She wanted to be a swordsman despite her father and others discouraging her because she's a woman and therefore weaker. She trained hard enough that she was the strongest in the entire dojo at age 12. Unfortunately she died by falling down stairs

Rebecca

She’s a former princess/gladiator fighting for her life in the colosseum on Dressrosa. Her family had a policy of non-violence, so while she has a sword and uses it well, she never attacks, only defends, and still wins every fight

Rebecca is a princess of the Kingdom of Dressrosa. Her kingdom was taken over by a warlord, and one of this warlords minions has the ability to turn people into toys and everyone forgets about the people who turned into toys. This happened to Rebecca's father, a former gladiator, who turned into a toy soldier. The toy soldier taught Rebecca how to fight with a sword, but in a way that wouldn't hurt anyone and she could still protect herself (because he didn't want her to stain her hands with blood like he'd done). Once people found out that she was the daughter of the king (who was literally used by the warlod like a puppet, because he has string powers), she was locked inside the colosseum of Dressrosa where she had to fight to survive. And she continued to fight exactly like the toy soldier had taught her, while the people in the audience verbally insulted her.

She is only female general in her nation, and guards the northern border. She fights with a sword even though there are other people with guns. Olivier is unmarried despite being older (not sure how old exactly, but she is a general, and that takes time). To the best of my knowledge she shows no interest in anyone, thus making it possible to interpret her as aromantic and asexual, or as a lesbian. The bit where Mustang offers to take her on a date and she threatens to eat so much she will bankrupt him is funny.

For Kiku:

She is almost 10 feet/3 meters tall and is a gorgeous trans woman and samurai, who is very loyal to her allies. She gets recognized as strong by the main character multiple times and proves it by being one of the most resilient badasses in the entire series. Helps break said main character out of the enemy's prison and takes part in a rebellion against the corrupt prison staff. She stands up to a tyrant who enslaved her country, said tyrant can also turn into a giant dragon. When the highest ranked sumo in the area is abusing class privilege and harassing both the townsfolks and her, she cuts his top knot off in public, effectively ending his career. Then after cutting the sumo's not knot, she uses her great acting skills to win the crowd to her side by playing the innocent maiden and being all "oh, no, what have I done?" (She knew exactly what she did >:) After her country is free, she also gets to enjoy being girly and mellow once everyone is able to relax, and everyone respects that side of her too. All of this at just 22 years of age, what a cool lady
