Name: Tobiuo “Flying Fish” (Pronunciation: “To-bi-yo”)
Race: Fishman Class: Fighter Crew: Heart-Pirates
Pronouns: She/Her Age: 28 Height: 7’2
Appearance: Skin is a cool blue palette, accents of teal and pastel pink in sunlight. Her hair is a dark navy colour, almost like squid ink. Under unnatural UV, raised spots and diamond-shaped scales glow like bioluminescent coral.
Peculiarities: Has gills on her face and neck, her eyes have no pupils, her tongue is barbed, and her teeth are pointed. Has webbed hands and feet, has webbed ears that triangulate out like fins of a flying fish. She cannot speak above water, her voice was not made to carry in air (her kin are of greater depths: Down Under). She uses sign language (Auslan), and will whistle to bring attention to her so she can communicate. Her voice can be heard under water, but it is far easier to communicate through sign. She is also amphibious.
Love interest: Heat (Kid-Pirate Crew Member)
Heart-Pirate History: Was found by Trafalgar Law, Bepo, Shachi and Penguin entangled in barbed nets close to Sabaody Archipelago in a state of panic, frantically attempting to claw herself free. She was heavily injured as she fought her way off a courier vessel bound for the auction house, but has no memory of how it occurred. A slash mark of a blade on her outer thigh was the only remaining injury that healed over in a raised welt of silver. The courier vessel was destroyed, Tobiuo was the sole survivor of both manned crew and slaves for auction. Most of the Heart-Pirates understand her sign after a few months, and use it to their advantage to communicate at greater distance, or in silence while attempting to remain stealthy in covert operations.
Role: She is Law’s security officer, hand to hand and tridents are her specialties. Considering Law is a Devil-Fruit user, she is on retrieve duty if he falls overboard.
Fighting: Fishmen are stronger, faster, and tougher than humans: Tobiuo is no different. She much faster under water, more deadly and lethal. May become worked up into a battle-like frenzy and overcome with rage (Berserker) in the heat of fight. This numbs her to pain until after the battle is over.
Personality: Physically quiet due to her mutism above water, but has a bright sense of humor and is highly expressive with her body language and sign. Is very much akin to a older sister to the crew, and will scold with an arched brow and purse of her lips if she witnesses them behaving recklessly. Loves to laugh, dance and tease with the crew. However, if the crew tease and prod too much, she will pick them up as if they weigh nothing and confine them to quarters until they apologise - or simply hover them over the side of the Polar Tang and threaten to drop them in the ocean while they flail wildly.
Notes: I love Auslan (Australian Sign Language). I learnt Auslan "key sign" for work, and have used it since with my family. Tobiuo is a reflection of my love and respect for sign, and I adore her.

pondering Again. but ur one of the only people i know who actually gaf about this stuff so i thought id say it here: the way the abuse in dsmp is never actually acknowledged for what it is... never said aloud.. is so interesting. like it sucks, its enabling the fandom to continue being abuse apologists and making it seem, correctly, like the creators have no idea what they are Actually writing. Thats obviously bad.
theres that... and then theres looking at it from a story standpoint. it genuinely intrigues me so much. it exemplifies the sort of horrific realism and... obliviousness, i guess, that this story has. of this story naturally and un-purposefully unfolding from some creators just playing around in a server together and then Attempting to form a semi coherent plot. i dont quite know how to explain what i mean. like, this story at its core is about abuse right? primarily about a kid being abused by so many of the adults around him and struggling to find allies. the way he makes sense of what happens to him. with c!drm, the abuse is acknowledged by other characters primarily when it is convenient to Them. it is addressed in vague words like "he hurt him" and such. c!tommy insists to everyone around him that what has been done to him was bad, expressing many times how it made him feel and a few of the specifics, and is brushed off repeatedly. all the while he himself seemingly cant phrase exactly What it was.
and dont get me started on cwilbur, whos NEVER full held accountable or treated as an abuser by the narrative, or even c!tommy. even when other characters insist that what ctommy went through was bad, it seems like hes the only one who Realizes that somethings wrong a lot of the time. desperately looking for someone to agree with him and tell him hes not just loosing it in a world that fails to actually call it what it is. again, its really upsetting!!!
yeah i dont know if im wording this right or whatever but i just think its interesting. i sometimes find myself be unable to hate many of the writing choices within the context of the story unless its in a real world or writing critique way. instead it just makes me sad. hardly any characters have ever felt so real to me. wanting to "save a character from their narrative" has never applied so strongly.
I know I said I wouldn’t post more anons until I finished my essay, but this one is pure peak …. Weaponized incompetence will be the word of this millennia of parasocial online fandom. Nothing else to add to this u just got it in one

I've been a fan of your work for a bit now and I gotta say your creature design is peak! What is your process?
Thank you! The vast majority of my creature design here is just taking parts of the irl earth tree of life and going 'what if the niche was different', so this does not necessarily apply to settings that are fully alien (though some core elements would apply universally to any 'grounded' creature design)
When looking at the tree of life you will find a lot of patterns in unrelated animals who have adapted for the same purposes. For example raptorial claws are extremely common in ambush hunting arthropods and occur in very similar shapes in entirely unrelated species, because they are highly efficient adaptations of arthropod limbs to grasp and hold onto prey)
(water scorpion, mantis, mantisfly, whip scorpion, ambush bug, mantis shrimp)
So a lot of design questions are answered by asking about the imaginary animal's niche and referencing real life animals that fill this niche
Like these are anatomically based on pterosaurs, but addressing the question of 'what if pterosaurs expanded to a similar niche to penguins (flightless swimming predatory birds of fish and squid) and a branch from there became fully aquatic (filling predatory niches closer to dolphins or seals). '
I think the key to making it feel naturalistic is to not FORCE it to fit the mold. The question is not 'what if x was shaped like y' but 'if x occupied y niche, what adaptations would be most advantageous/are most common in extant analogous animals?'
Uhrwal (dolphin looking ones) reference a mixture of dolphins and penguins in terms of head shape, as they have beaks and this is a likelier route than something more seal-like or etc. They are egg layers and by necessity have ties to the land, so the rest of their anatomy references pinnipeds (quadrupedal, haul out to reproduce) more heavily. They also have whiskers for prey detection, mostly because I love giving things whiskers but it's plausible in that most animals in similar niches have whiskers and those that don't (cetaceans, analogous fish species) have echolocation or other senses (chemical, electrical) that assist in prey detection which a pterosaur is less likely to develop than simply modifying their pycnofibers into whiskers
Tiviit very very very heavily reference penguins as they are basically in the exact same niche (semi aquatic previously flighted beaked egg layers), but remain quadrupedal (like pterosaurs) rather than bipedal (like avians) and their anatomy is adjusted to suit this. Varkheshi (big tiviit, bottom right) hunt large prey (rather than fish and squid) fill a niche that no penguin/bird in general actually occupies, and have hooked and serrated beaks to bleed prey and bulky heads with large muscle attachments for increased bite force to rip and tear flesh of subdued prey items. Etc.
Beyond that, I'm extensively referencing similar animals for details like coloration and etc. There's no dolphins or penguins/seabirds with the Exact color and patterning shown here, but similar colors and patterning are very common.
It's pretty different with the sophonts because I've basically worked backwards with them and have had to brute force their designs into realism
The setting was originally more of a standard fantasy with most of the nonhuman ones being basically anthros, or otherwise very unrealistic and unsatisfying designs for what turned into a very grounded setting.
So I kind of had to brute force them into a place on the evolutionary tree and attempt to have satisfying answers to 'why are they walking upright?' 'why do they have hands?' 'how do they use tools?'.
Which btw is REALLY not a good way to go about this process if you're aiming for realism, because it will back you into corners where you have to choose between bullshitting heavily or scrapping key elements altogether, and I had to wipe the slate almost entirely in a couple of places to come to a design/premise I'm satisfied with (especially archin, which used to be 3 ft tall anthro bees). And there's still a LOT of questionable elements in these designs, like I don't think I've made a satisfactory excuse for qilik to have hands or done a good job on said hands (a transitional gliding avian would be FAR more likely to use its beak than its increasingly vestigial hands as a manipulating limb). Yotici are also kind of a mess

Ranking all the Brontë novels + briefly reviewing The Professor
I finally finished The Professor by Charlotte Brontë, which means I HAVE COMPLETED ALL THE BRONTË NOVELS, which means I can now rank them. This is a rough order, but brief explanations will be given...
As an aside, bc I don't want to make a separate post for my review of The Professor, but I did note several strong similarities to Jane Eyre (the female lead's description, her elvish comparisons) and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (Hunsden/Huntington as the cynic, although the former is mostly good and the latter mostly bad). Really all the Brontë novels are very similar so there are tons of more common themes I could mention but won't. Also, more references to Scottish besties Walter Scott & Lord Byron!
Now for my official Brontë Book Ranking (which may be subject to change over the years...)
7. Shirley - I would like to revisit this one. There are some great gems in it, and I'm fascinated by the Luddism subject matter. It is also a strong contender for the most feminist Brontë novel and has probably the most in-depth female relationships which does count for something. But it's SO UNNECESSARILY LONG! And often boring! And it took me the longest to finish. So it has to be last.
6. The Professor - this one benefits from not being Shirley. It's also a good attempt at a first novel I think. It has some gems, but it's often boring like Shirley is in my opinion. I thought the main male, Crimsworth, was a bit more exciting to follow than any of the men in Shirley. I actually think Crimsworth is a pretty inspiring figure and I enjoyed his observations and his anti-work rhetoric. Like most Brontë protagonists, he's a teacher who experiences classism, poverty, and oppression, and manages to overcome these things through frugality, faith, love, hope, etc.
5. Agnes Grey - it's hard to get through at times but it's generally worth it and has a strong pay off. I think Anne's writing style is generally enjoyable. It's has a lot of the horror of Wuthering Heights and the lighter parts of Jane Eyre but it lacks Charlotte and Emily's stronger passions and has more of Anne's calm reasoning, faith, and stoicism. That makes it sound more boring than it really is maybe. I also think it's fascinating for being largely semi-autobiographical like Charlotte's works can be. We get to "know" Anne more than we do in Tenant I feel, and I think she's pretty admirable. The bird scene was based on a real experience she had as a governess, and she wrote most of the novel as a rebellious act in her room right after work. All teachers and childcare workers – and really all women and members of the working-class – should take this novel as the cautionary tale it was written to be.
4. Villette - this is the weirdest Brontë novel. Some interesting scenes and characters. Charlotte's last novel shows far more writerly evolution than in Shirley where she was again trying for more progressive social commentary (and mostly succeeded I think) but often fell back into the more sedate or conventional nature that parts of The Professor has (saving Crimsworth's sometimes strong, sassy, rebellious attitude). Villette was written in a strange period of grief for Charlotte and it shows. Villette is basically Jane Eyre's weirder older sister.
3 and 2 are almost tied for me. I have also written about 3, 2, and 1 so much on my blog that I probably won't go into as much detail as I have with the others.
3. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall - shockingly underrated. Hard to get through, but so is Wuthering Heights which it's pretty similar to at times. Radically progressive and daring, it is a strong contender for being the most feminist Brontë novel and the most oriented toward social justice (although they really all are). Brilliant use of mystery and gothic allure with a social realism that was too ahead of its time to fall into the common traps of that genre. Has everything you could want in a Brontë novel.
2. Wuthering Heights - a bomb in your face. Full of passion. Grand drama. What can I say? It's infamous for valid reasons. Never a boring moment, which instantly pushes it to the top of the list for me who am easily bored. I have elaborated on this work very often on my page so I don't feel the need to reiterate everything here but I will say that this novel has basically everything you could want.
1. Jane Eyre - has all the gothic mystery and passion of Wuthering Heights but focuses on fewer characters whose arcs thus feel more personable and fulfilling in my opinion. We get to know Jane and Rochester much more fully than almost any of the other Brontë characters I feel. And it is my love for the characters that really makes this one my favorite Brontë novel as well as one of my favorite tales of all time (whereas Heights is notorious for its unlikeable characters which actually repel many readers from enjoying it). No wonder it's the most adapted and tied with Wuthering Heights for being the most famous (although I think it may have surpassed Wuthering Heights in pop culture at times). I also think there are a lot of really meaningful themes, morals, and subjects that are explored in this novel, which again can be said of all Brontë novels, but it all feels so much more full in this one. The plot itself is also the most well-crafted in my opinion, and it has one of the greatest twists in all of literature/media imo.

¡WARNING!: VERY long post ahead!
I was recently asked to do a tutorial for two friends, and I figured I’d share it here! It’s on how I personally use markers and colored pencils for portraits, so if that’s something you’re interested in then this is for you!
I must preface by saying this is my first tutorial/guide thingy and I’m no professional, but hopefully it helps some! This is only one way of going about it, don’t worry if it’s not your way!
Without further ado, let’s do this! And remember: Trust the process!!!
First, the angelic (😏) reference:
Now, we all see tones differently. I also am using the Art Alternatives Portrait Set, which is limited in tones. So, this won’t be completely picture accurate- which is okay! Essence over accuracy!
Alright! Here we go!
Step One: the sketch!
Typically I do the sketch in the person’s undertone, usually pinks or purples. However, for whatever reason I was compelled to try blue on this one, and hey- what is art if not random attempts at creating beauty?
And just like the color scheme, the sketch isn’t 100% accurate. But again, it’s all good!
But anyways, the reason I do my sketches in colored pencil is because it doesn’t smudge like graphite does, and it actually blends into the marker. I feel it’s smoother, and it provides some undertones as you start layering with marker.
Step Two: base tones
This is where you wonder if you just destroyed the entire drawing. I promise you that you didn’t! Basically what I do here is I put pinks down wherever I see pinks in the reference and lay down where the skin is the darkest. I find that it blends better when it’s underneath the base layer.
Step Three: the base layer
Here, all you do is throw down the skintone over the entirety of where it goes, in this case the face. I typically try to leave out highlights, but sometimes the marker bleeds and covers things I didn’t ask it to. In this case, that was the eyes. Oh well!
One thing to notice here is how you can still see the colored pencil beneath the sketch. That’s a very useful guide for when you begin detailing.
Step 3.5: uh
This isn’t necessarily a marker step, it’s just me letting the ink dry and working on other spots with pen and colored pencil. Also, I do like to go over the pink areas a few times to make them less stark.
Step Four: beginning detailing
Now, black is a tricky color on the face, because it can either smudge on everything and turn it gray, or work really well. I used a colored pencil here, and began going over the blue colored pencil spots and lines that were visible under the marked, which started to bring out his face. I also covered the highlight on the nose that had been left alone thus far.
Step Five: THE™️ details
If there’s anything I’ve learned in my five years of drawing, it’s that the highlights and darkest points are what really make the piece. Pure white, bright highlights (like the ones in the eyes) are awesome, but lately I like smudging them out a little bit so that they’re gentler.
If there’s anything you want to hit, it’s the whites of the eyes with the white gel pen, and the pupils + nostrils with the black fineliner.
I have shaky hands, but I use them to my advantage in stippling the darkest part of the eyebrows and in the line of the lips with the fineliner- it just adds a little bit more depth :)
Hair is its own thing, I just sort of wing it. Black hair especially is not the easiest for me, just because I find it difficult to bring out the shades in it. It’s not done at this step as I was trying to figure out how I was going to finish it.
I will also blend things out with both the skintone marker and a pink colored pencil just to get stuff to be smoother. If you’re going for semi realism/realism like me, I highly recommend taking a reddish brown to do some freckles/skin texture with. You can’t see it too much in this picture, and I didn’t want to overdo it since Cas/Misha doesn’t have that many freckles as far as I can see, but it does make a difference.
Step Six: everything else
I did the jacket in colored pencil as well as the fake id!

2024 Book Review #13 – Victory City by Salman Rushdie
One of my goals for the year is to read more proper literature (here defined as fiction I can mention reading to my mother without getting judged for it). I’ve never read anything of Rushdie’s before, but I did remember his name in the news recently due to the whole attempted-murder thing and, happily, my library actually had a copy of his newest work. So, picked this up and read it sight unseen!
The book follows one Pampa Kampana – a nine-year-old girl who, in the 14th century, witnesses her city destroyed, and her mother burning herself alive. She is then inhabited and blessed by a goddess, blessed/cursed with a lifespan measured in centuries and the destiny of raising an empire up and seeing it fall before she dies.
The narrative is framed as a modern adaptation/summary of the epic poem recounting her life Pampa completes before finally dying, finally discovered and translated after being forgotten in the ruins of te imperial capital for centuries. The story is largely a story of this miraculous, semi-utopian empire, as told Pampa’s eyes (and with a lengthy digression during the years she spends in exile).
This is a story that exists somewhere in the muddy middle ground between historical low fantasy and magical realism – it’s in some sense an alternate history of the Vijayanagara Empire, and replete with historical trivia and references, but is quite clear from the outset that accuracy is not really something the book cares about. Instead, the book’s Vijayanagara – always written as Bisnaga, as it was translated by a historical Portuguese chronicler whose also a minor character in the story, to prevent confusion – is basically allegory and morality tale with a light coating of history for flavour.
Not that I can really begrudge Rushdie for his strident politics (as far as I can tell I basically agree with him on all of it), but this really does feel like one of those old fantastical utopias, or a political treatise that gets past the censors by pretending to be the history of a foreign country, more than it does a novel. Which could definitely work! But in this case really didn’t, at least for me. There’s enough time spent on characterization and character drama to eat up pages, but not enough for it to ever feel like they’re people and not just marionettes acting out a show. I suppose the best way to get across the reading experience is that I was reading a proper 500 page history book at the same time as I read this, and this felt like the bigger slog by far.
Though part of that might just be disappointed expectations that I really had no right to have in the first place? As I said, I had Rushdie slotted in my head as a literary author, but really I don’t know nearly enough about him or his work to justify that. So I came to this expecting to be at least a bit wowed and bedazzled by the artistry and beautiful prose on display – and like, eh? Not bad, to be sure, the narrative voice and the framing device are both fun and fairly well done. But having read it there’s really not a single passage or sequence I can say has stuck with me.
The comparison that comes to mind is Kalpa Imperial by Angélica Gorodischer, which is also a book-length epic history of a fantastical empire that never was which laughs at all conventional wisdom about pacing, characterization and plot (and which also has been shelved as magical realism for what are basically reasons genre snobbery imo). It’s been a few years since I read it, but from what I recall that agreed with me far more. Maybe just because it abandoned the conceit of a single protagonist and family melodrama entirely, or maybe because it had a bit more subtle in its social commentary (or maybe it was just better written on a sentence-to-sentence level).
Though I should say, there’s every possibility I’m being a bit harsher on this than it entirely deserves – it’s an entirely competent book! The politics are blatant but like a) they’re politics I agree with and b) they’re nowhere near the most blatant or forced-feeling inclusion of progressive politics in fiction I’ve seen recently. However, this is also a piece of writing that’s among other things very clearly and directly about how important and sublime and world-changing the art of writing is. Which is like a movie about making it in showbuisness, or a musical about how great singing is. Automatic deduction of a full letter grade.

Since my most recent post is doing well you probably found me through there. So, what’s this all about?
In celebration of reaching 10 followers (TYSM BTW!! I know some people might think it’s silly but it means a lot to me), and my most recent post doing well, I would like to start doing FanArt requests (through the ask box)! I will draw any character from Sherlock, Good Omens, and any related fandoms in any way in a new style I’m attempting.
It’s part of my 2024 resolution to try different things with drawing, and to try completing a drawing a day for at least a week (that way I hopefully get faster at drawing)!
(IMPORTANT) Rules:

I need yall to know this was one of my first ever attempts at the tbhk art style.. And coming from a semi-realism artist.. anyway! (Dear god it's bad) Context for this one is that whenever Teru unsheathes his sword, lightning surrounds him so it would be funny if he did that outside their home while Kou is just cleaning and the entire Minamoto residence lights up like a flash bang.
Whenever I shared a bunk bed with anyone I'd hang upside down from the top bunk and wake my friends up like this, and I feel like Tsukasa would do the same to Amane when they were alive.. of course they had a futon and not a bunk bed so its 100% worse.

An Attempt at a Semi-Realistic Analysis of Thoron Stab Wounds
Yes, I already made a post about this recently. But in my reply to Ana's musing about the subject of the thoron blade, I largely assumed fire-like behaviour from an electric spell, and it's been itching my brain all day. So let's go over it again:
What would be the effect of getting stabbed with a bolt of electricity? What would that look like if we offered like five more centimeters of realism to this setting?
If you don't read the full post, my conclusions are basically:
If we treat a thoron bolt like a live wire, then even if it's a relatively weak source of electricity, with that entry placement it's instantly arresting breath, causing severe convulsions, and probably killing him in record time.
I don't care that Chrom has the power of god and anime on his side. There is no way in hell he's speaking or controlling his own movements in this moment.
The best interpretation of the thoron blade stabbing is the interpretation that makes the story feel best to YOU. Ignore me and my math if it doesn't spark (hah) any joy or interest for you.
Content warning: Detailed discussion of electrical shock and burns, and descriptions of such.
Classification of Energy Blades
I generally consider the thoron blade to be a subtype of a broader class of fictional weapons I call energy blades. These are your lightsabers, your halo fireblades, things like that.
Most of these weapons tend to behave like sources of pure heat, and most can have their behaviour modelled like a Hot Knife. The weapon is treated as though it has a physical component -- a sharp blade at its center that handles most of the actual cutting or stabbing -- and the fire/plasma/heat is treated as a secondary effect of the weapon. Narratively this is often the more balanced choice, because it means the weapon puts out a reduced amount of heat energy, which means damage is (mostly) contained to the initial wound site and its immediate surroundings. This is how you get instant cauterization weapons.
The other option is the Literal Flame model, which assumes pure heat energy with no physical cutting component. This is rarely, if ever, used in fiction, because it is overpowered. It works a lot like the acetylene torch analogue I used in my reblog of Ana's post. In short, for a volume of heat energy to be capable of "cutting" flesh, it's effectively vaporizing/instantly melting that flesh. That means it's putting out a LOT of energy. For a heat-based weapon, that means massive amounts of burning around the wound site, penetrating way deeper into the surrounding tissue than you expect, and the sheer heat of the air around the weapon causing widespread surface burns.
But the problem with using heat-based models in this instance is that Thoron is not a pure heat-source. Thoron is electricity, and electricity behaves very differently from pure heat. So if our aim is semi-realism, we ought to model it like electricity.
The Behaviour of Electricity
Fictional electric magic -- thoron included -- rarely behaves like real electricity. So, for our purposes, rather than an actual arc of electrical energy, let's model a thoron blade as a source of electricity.
Validar, through Robin, has effectively jammed a live wire directly through Chrom's lung and kidney. What does that do? To talk about that, we need to talk about how electric shocks work.
For electrical current to flow, you need a circuit. For a body to complete a circuit, it needs to contact two points with different voltage levels. A bird sitting on a high voltage wire has two feet touching points of the same voltage, so, voltage difference 0, the bird is safe. Chrom, however, has a live wire stuck through his kidney and feet on the ground; he's forming a circuit between a high voltage wire and the low voltage ground. Big voltage difference, big problem.
Once you get past the outer layer of skin, two things happen when a person is shocked. One, human bodies use electricity to move and to send nerve signals, so any muscles getting shocked will tense up. And two, humans do conduct electricity but don't do it well, which means there's a lot of heat being generated, which means the tissue getting shocked is also getting burned.
The majority of an electrical current will follow the path of least resistance. In this case, that means the shock initially goes from the impalement site, down through the legs, and out the feet. But electricity follows ALL available paths in some amount, so its not one straight line through the body, it does wider damage than that.
So What's The Damage?
Time to do some math!
(I am not an electrician or a doctor; please bear with me)
To my understanding, injury from electricity is a function of current and duration.
According to my sources, the amount of shock current someone experiences can be estimated using Ohm's law. To do this we need to know the voltage we're dealing with... so we're going to have to fudge some numbers here, since we can't actually measure the voltage of fictional magic spells.
Given thoron is a third tier lightning spell I'm going to say it's powerful, but not anywhere near lightning-from-the-sky powerful. I'll ballpark it around the voltage of... well, an electric chair, of the persuasion that kills you. Best I can tell, that means 2000 volts. You could probably reasonably go higher, but this feels intuitive to me.
My sources also tell me that the average internal resistance of the human body, with no skin in the way, is 1000 ohms. Just an average, not accounting for the different resistances of different tissue types and fluids.
So! To get the strength of the shock current Chrom's getting:
I = V/R = 2000 volts / 1000 ohms = 2 amps.
2 amps of current. Chrom is experiencing approximately 2 amps of steady current over 22 seconds.
I know that 2 amps doesn't seem like a big number. I need you to understand, dear reader, that currents that injure and kill humans are measured in milliamps. I need you to understand the sheer magnitude of how bad this is.
0.03 amps of current causes muscle contractions strong enough that you can't let go of the thing shocking you.
0.15 amps is enough to stop your heart, if the current goes through your heart -- which means death. It's enough to stop your breathing if the current goes through your lungs/diaphragm. It's enough to cause your limbs to tense so hard you are physically thrown.
Much more current than that, or current for more than fractions of a second, and you start talking severe burns.
I need you to understand that we have just directed 2000 milliamps of current through most of Chrom's internal organs for 22 entire gods-damned seconds.
Did I pull that voltage completely out of my ass? Yes. But Chrom is getting shocked directly in the organs for 22 fucking seconds so there is literally no voltage we can pick that isn't completely fucking him over. The exact number is just a question of how singed we want him at the end.
I know he has dragon heritage and general anime dude resilience on his side. I know this. But I cannot stress enough the degree to which that is not helping him here. In fact, things like the mild super strength like he has PROBABLY WOULD MAKE IT WORSE because your muscles contract way harder than you normally can contract them when they're being shocked!
No, Really, What's The Damage?
Best as I can tell, based on my limited understanding of electricity and its effects, here's roughly what happens to Chrom upon getting stabbed by the thoron blade when we pretend like this setting is a smidge more realistic than it actually is.
If you do not want to read graphic descriptions of injury this is your final warning to bail out of this post.
The instant the blade impales him, all the muscles from the bolt to his toes constrict. He instantly stops breathing. His legs and abdomen convulse so hard it throws him away from Robin.
He lands on the ground, and now the current isn't just going through his legs; it's going through any part of him that touches the ground, and that, in the end, is what's lethal.
His entire body locks up. Muscles pull as tight as they can go. He's convulsing on the ground, like a seizure, only worse. The skin around the bolt bubbles and chars. It smells like meat burning.
There's a sound like wood snapping as the force of his own writhing muscles fractures his bones.
He doesn't speak. He doesn't even scream.
It's bloodless and quiet. Twenty two seconds is a long time.
If Chrom was lucky, he died quickly. Heat turning blood to jelly, a lick of current stopping the heart, pain so great his brain knocks out of its own accord to spare him.
If being a son of Naga "helped" at all, gave him any resilience past what is human, it only means he was conscious a few seconds longer. Just enough time to be aware of the loss of control and the razor-sharp fire of nerve pain that erases all thought. With luck, not enough time to consciously realise he's dying, or whose fault it is.
Twenty two seconds is a long time.
The exit wounds on his back, on his limbs, on his head, sear, then bubble, then char in places. The damage around the bolt bubbles and blackens out and out and out. Don't think about what that looks like on the inside. The smell of burning flesh is thick enough to choke on.
He's still convulsing and burning long, long past the point of death. It only stops when the bolt fades.
In Conclusion:
The only thing saving us all from trauma around this cutscene is the T for Teen rating.
Validar could you pick literally any other execution method because holy hell. Robin carries a sword. Why didn't you just use THE SWORD, VALIDAR.
If you choose to model the thoron blade as a Hot Knife, or as a Literal Pinpoint Flame, or as either of those with a secondary mild electric shock effect, those are all extremely good options for how to handle this event. They offer an experience closer to canon with a highly variable level of injury severity. Singe the man to your taste, allow last words or don't, pick your level of blood and bad smells, those do it all.
Live Wire, as described in too much detail in this post, may be a marginally more realistic model if you want to treat thoron as a straight up source of electricity. Live Wire is also probably the most horrifying option of the bunch, and the one that offers everybody involved the least closure, which has it's own narrative value.
In the end, this is naught but applying a little too much realism and math to anime video game, because I find that fun. If this doesn't work for you throw it out. Pick whatever interpretation makes the best narrative for YOU. If you are like me and are fascinated by the most horrifying option, welcome, we can feel terrible about this together now.

A desperate attempt at drawing quentin- I couldn’t get his facial features quite right and it’s REALLY bugging me- but that’s ok
Repair of small objects!
Something something the symbolism of a character who is helpless but needs to help others… his whole character being built on the desire and need to fix things… the repetitive theme of him having to come to terms with not being able to fix the big problem and settling for fixing small things… ultimately sacrificing his own life and in doing so fixing the big problem… by using minor mending… finally being the hero of his quest… the chosen one… indeed, trying to fix something can make it worse… and things did get broken when he tried to fix something but it was also for the better… banging on the walls of my enclosure screaming biting-

what tips do you have for non-artist writers who might want to attempt drawing their ocs?
Hi anon,
Well I think the first thing to be aware of is that art is a skill that can be trained, and training it is much easier for some than it is for others, and that's totally okay. The timeline to build skills will be different for everyone, but for most people, it will require some patience. So anyone starting art needs to be willing to be gentle on themselves and give themselves some time. And it's possible to both be gentle on yourself while also pushing yourself to be better.
And the next thing—which is honestly just a fact of art—is that not everything is going to perfectly match what is in your brain. In fact, in my experience, it's rare when it perfectly matches what's in your brain. So I think the sooner an artwork can be relieved of that expectation, the quicker and easier it becomes to create it. That also brings us to the next part, which is willingness to let an artwork be what it's going to be sometimes.
Because not every drawing is going to work, and that's also just a fact of art. Of course, diligently working on your training gets it closer to the point where more drawings are successful, but sometimes there needs to be a lot of bad pictures before that happens. And on that topic, it's totally fine to take one of your 'bad' drawings and try to redraw it or update it. Maybe what wasn't working on one day will work when you try it again.
Uh, I think another fantastic thing to be aware of is that what we call 'realism' is just a style. And you don't have to draw in that style. So many people get hung up on what 'looks good' or 'looks right'—by which they mean what matches our expectations of realism and semi-realism—that they miss forming a 'style' in a way that satisfies what they're trying to express both visually and emotionally. Realism and semi-realism are choices to make in art. They're only rules to abide by if you choose to (and if you choose them, it can require a lot more training/practice, either in a school or on your own).
Another good thing to bear in mind is that someone's artistic skill level is not always indicative of their tastes in other people's art. I say this because of instances where people make the assumption that because my art has a lot of realism, they think it means I think other types of art are bad, or that I'm judging their incorrect anatomy, or something similar. I totally understand the fear of judgment (especially because I trained in a demanding part of the industry hellbent on accuracy), but if you're getting too scared to share your art with someone because of it, it can be good to remind yourself of this. Because hey, what you might worry is terrible, I might actually love and gush over for days. The things you might think are a weakness might be the things someone else sees as an artist's/style's strength... and you should only change those things if they don't satisfy YOU.
Anyways I realize you probably meant practical drawing tips like about anatomy or perspective or something. So maybe I'll cover that in another post, or will reblog this with additional info. But these are things I tell anyone starting art at the moment. I hope they help you or at least someone. <3
