Narcissa nudged her bangs into place, scowling at the strand that insisted on crossing over its neighbor on the end to stick out to the side. Draco tugged on her skirt. “Mama?”

“Yes, Draco?” She sighed, stepping away from the mirror. This would have to do, she supposed. Her hair was straightened, pinned back, and her bangs were as neat as they were going to get. Lucius had always been upset when her hair was out of sorts when they went out – hurt that she ‘couldn’t be bothered to make the effort’. She flicked the stubborn bit at the edge of her bangs again.

“Why is Uncle Reg watching me tonight?”

“Because I’m going out for a while; I told you yesterday, remember?”

Draco’s brows drew together as his face scrunched up in thought. He looked a bit more like Lucius like that, and her stomach twisted. Then his face cleared, a smile lit up his face, and any trace of his father dissipated. “Oh, yeah! You have new friends!”

Narcissa hummed, smoothing a hand over his hair. “Yes. You don’t mind, right? Do you still like spending time with Uncle Reg?”

Regulus was certainly the most responsible option in terms of babysitting, but it still made her nervous. Were her instructions clear enough? Would they get along? What would happen if Draco got upset, or hurt?��

“Yeah,” Draco said confidently. She kept him in her peripheral as she moved to the coat closet to sort through her options. “He said we could do a puzzle together and make hot chocolate.”

Narcissa turned to return his smile, grasping at the feeling that voiced itself as something similar to fondness, maybe even love. It was almost loud enough to drown out the anxiety of the night to come, but not quite. She turned back to the three coats draped over her arm. 

“Take the green one,” Regulus said from the doorway to the living room. He always stood properly, back straight, hands clasped behind him, chin up; irrevocable habits that had been baked in since childhood. 

“You don’t think it’s too much?” She looked down at the rest of her outfit. It was all muted colors – blacks and greys. The forest green of the peacoat felt audacious in contrast. ‘You might as well walk outside with a spotlight turned on you,’ she remembered Lucius grumbling the first time she'd worn it. 

When the doorbell rang out, Regulus was quick to step closer, toss the other two coats back in the closet, and press the green one to her chest. Narcissa clutched the coat, and Regulus’ hands with it. She took a deep, steadying breath before releasing him. 

“Enjoy your date,” he whispered before disappearing around the corner. She heard the murmur of his and Draco’s voices in the other room as she slipped on the coat, pulled her hair free from the collar, and smoothed it down a final time before pulling the door open. 

She found Pandora’s finger hovering over the doorbell, clearly poised to ring it again, and Lily’s hand wrapped around her wrist. Both of them straightened up at the sight of her, arms falling back by their sides. The weight of both their gazes on her felt heady. 

“Your coat matches her eyes,” Pandora commented, tilting her head in Lily’s direction. She seemed pleased. 

“You look lovely,” Lily breathed. 

Narcissa flushed, but said nothing, waiting for the inevitable follow up, the ‘but’ statement that she’d learned to anticipate. But it never came. Pandora simply extended a hand to pull her out onto the front porch, and waited for her to close the door and double check that it was locked before tangling their fingers together. They stepped off the porch to meet Lily, who pressed a hand to Narcissa’s lower back and said softly, “Ready?”

think about it: aziraphale had a sword, but crowley is about to face satan who wants to destroy the world, and crowley's only weapon is a tool of creation

"The Supreme Court on Thursday [June 13, 2024] unanimously preserved access to a medication that was used in nearly two-thirds of all abortions in the U.S. last year, in the court’s first abortion decision since conservative justices overturned Roe v. Wade two years ago.

The nine justices ruled that abortion opponents lacked the legal right to sue over the federal Food and Drug Administration’s approval of the medication, mifepristone, and the FDA’s subsequent actions to ease access to it. The case had threatened to restrict access to mifepristone across the country, including in states where abortion remains legal.

Abortion is banned at all stages of pregnancy in 14 states, and after about six weeks of pregnancy in three others, often before women realize they’re pregnant.

Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who was part of the majority to overturn Roe, wrote for the court on Thursday that “federal courts are the wrong forum for addressing the plaintiffs’ concerns about FDA’s actions.”

The opinion underscored the stakes of the 2024 election and the possibility that an FDA commissioner appointed by Republican Donald Trump, if he wins the White House, could consider tightening access to mifepristone, including prohibiting sending it through the mail...

Kavanaugh’s opinion managed to unite a court deeply divided over abortion and many other divisive social issues by employing a minimalist approach that focused solely on the technical legal issue of standing and reached no judgment about the FDA’s actions...

Note: A massive relief and a genuine victory - this will preserve access to the medication used in 2/3rds of abortions last year, for at least another 2 years. (Probably minimum time it will take Republicans to get their next attempt before the Supreme Court.)

Still, with this, a sword that has been hanging over our heads for the last two years is gone. There will be a new one soon, but we just bought ourselves probably at least 2 years. The fight isn't over, but this is absolutely worth celebrating.
