here's day one to lure you, like a siren's song

There’s nothing quite like being unable to see to make a man feel helpless.

It’s a feeling that Arthur has only ever experienced in fragments before, waking up at midnight and fumbling for a light, slipping through the back hallways of a music hall, the sliver of time just before unconsciousness when he’d been drinking too much. But those moments are finite. Arthur always knew they would end. He’d turn on the lamp. He’d exit back onto stage. He’d wake up chagrined and shamefaced, and promise himself he’d never drink again.

This is not finite.

This is a life of unrelenting darkness.

A fate he would have thought, up until yesterday, is worse than death for a man that still fancies himself a composer even if that’s not what pays the bills.

But Arthur is learning that there are so, so many things worse than being unable to see.

“Get up, Arthur. We don’t have time for your moping this morning.”

Yes. There are things that are much worse than living in the dark.

Like finally knowing what’s on the other side of it.

Poor quality audience taping of the band's last show on their 1980 tour of Japan, at Budokan. These are for myself the only live versions of the tremendous Monolith material I've ever heard, so the distant and thin sound can at least be tolerated.
