Did you delete cagey tigers?? I just caught up on midori sour and i was like "alrighty time to catch up on the kitty cat story" and then i couldn't freaking find it on ao3, and then i remembered the name, still couldn't find it, so I looked it up and was like I THOUGHT THAT WAS THEM!! NO KITTY CAT STORY??????? Absolutely devastating, but I support your reasons, whatever they may be
I did. I’m kind of sorry and also kind of not? It was a fun fic that I was writing to fuck around and I just didn’t want to fuck around anymore.
I hate having unfinished works out there (and it’s also one of my weaker fics) so… /draws thumb across throat/
Thank you for loving it while it existed though!

I read eleventy-million books every year and it's going to take me a long time to answer all these so I'm going to break it into parts. Some caveats: These are the books jumping out to me in this instance, if I were answering this question tomorrow or yesterday, things might have been different. I really do read a metric fuckton of books. I've mostly removed any editorializing from the books but I'm fully prepared to talk about them more if needed. (But who would need it?)
1. Faves of the year
First, a backstory. I’m a solid 3-star kind of guy. Like, if the book was fine it gets 3 stars just bc someone took the time to write it, you know? A book has to be pretty atrocious to get less than 3 stars from me and it has to evoke some capital F feelings to get a 4. 5 are pretty rare. I’ve had a lot of books get close only to fumble the ending but I read several books that were 5 stars for me this year. And, bc I read so many fucking books, I’m only going to list those, not other books that came close.
Maeve Fly - CJ Leede Several People are Typing - Calvin Kasulke Best Served Cold - HE Edgmon (from The White Guy Dies First) How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying - Django Wexler The Pairing - Casey McQuiston
2. Flops of the year
Again. It’s hard for a book to completely flop for me bc I’m very aware of the effort it takes to write something. However, there were a few:
Till We Become Monsters - Amanda Headlee Death & Dismemberment - A L Brody
And a handful of niche KU books I won’t bother mentioning. These two, though, I’ve seen on book lists so I’m registering my dislike.
6. Dead Dove Do Not Eat: Book you would recommend to a select audience with a mountain of caveats
Dead Inside - Chandler Morrison.
Imagine Holden Caulfield and Patrick Bateman have a child that lives in a splatterpunk novel. A pretentious edgelord protagonist that whines his way through a list of almost every trigger you can imagine.
7. Wasted Potential: Great premise and/or characters but fell down on execution
Ugh. I gotta go back and read my DMs to you bc I know I’ve bitched about a few.
The Eyes are the Best Part - Monika Kim Reception - Kenzie Jennings A Certain Hunger - Chelsea Summers The Least of My Scars - Stephen Graham Jones Your Blood, My Bones - Kelly Andrew
9. Compels Me Though: Okay, maybe not all of it made sense, but you had a great time anyway
The Bus on Thursday - Shirley Barrett Your Shadow Half Remains - Sunny Moraine And Then I Woke Up - Malcolm Devlin
I'm more or less willing to talk/answer questions about these books in the comments so...
Part two will be coming later, I'm sure.

Please do not archive or share fanfics that I deleted from ao3.
This includes posting my work elsewhere. It also includes sharing personal downloads, Google drives, or ePubs. If I deleted it, I deleted it for a reason. I can't stop you from sharing but I am asking nicely.

💖 🐌 🌈 🫘 🥳🪩 (prepared questions in advance)
💖 What is your primary writing goal for this year?
Easy. Finish an original work.
🐌 What is one of your smallest writing goals?
Spend less time writing stuff that pisses me off. (Sorry fandom.)
🌈 What research do you plan on doing for your writing?
Knowing what I will be researching ahead of time requires me to know where my writing is going at any given point and I absolutely to not. I don't plan the research, the research plans me. Or something.
(I will say that just today I've researched French daggers and land-based mollusks for original works so things are looking exciting.)
🫘 Spill the beans. What's a new project you're doing this year?
Learning the ins-and-outs of independent publishing. I mean, I've done it before but there are a lot of nuances so I've got to update my knowledge.
🥳 How are you going to celebrate when you achieve one of your writing goals?
Run away to a cabin in the woods alone for a few days. And maybe buy myself some nice indoor arrows.
🪩 Do you have any "good" writing habits you want to cultivate?
I don't know if I have habits at all. Habit implies routine and there are zero routines around my writing. I do it when I can, where I can, usually with people screaming in the background. However, I think I'm pretty organized when it comes to stories, chapters, scenes, etc. and I want to keep that up.

🛳️✨?
🛳 Are there any new ships you want to write for? (Platonic, romantic, or anything in between.)
No. Not really. I'm honestly barely dragging myself through the ships that I still have open fics for. Like... I'm not sure if I'll even be writing for them next year.
✨ What's one area of your writing that you think needs the least amount of improvement?
The least amount of improvement? Geez. Dialogue, I guess? I spent a lot of time with very specific ships specifically working on dialogue because I felt like it was such a weak part of my writing when I first got into fandom.
I think it worked.

Just thought to myself "can't women have a bad time in fiction without rape being involved" which really shows you how much you're in the fucking trenches if you are both a horror fan and women fan

Can I ask what happened to that one fic where spider man dislocates his shoulder?? If that’s alright of course
Ah, man. I can’t believe you remember that fic! It was one of the (many) epilogues of Stop Talking, Keep Talking which I deleted for a lot of reasons. I detailed them all here, if you want to check it out.
I will say, even though STKT is dead and buried, it totally made my day that you remembered the shoulder dislocation fic. That one has a special place in my heart. Thank you!
