oikawa takes a deep breath while he closes his eyes, his hands feeling the firm ball between them. he pushes the air out of his lungs slowly, picturing the winning serve in his mind.
he’s so close. so close.
finally, he opens his eyes, launching the ball up, up, up. he starts running and, just before jumping, he can feel it. there’s a change in the air and the atmosphere grows thicker.
it’s just one second. one serve. one point.
it takes one second, for dreams to become true.
oikawa barely feels his teammates hugging him and jumping around him. barely hears the loud screams and cheers coming from the crowd.
his breathing is quick, shallow. his chest goes up and down fast and, even though he tries to normalize it, he can’t.
not when he has just become an olympic champion.
not when he sees a tall silhouette, dark attire, short and unruled hair, walking towards him. his steps are calm, slow, measured.
if oikawa didn’t know him any better, he would think him unbothered. but, oh, oikawa knew him better than anyone.
“seems i won” he said, with a more stable voice than he had expected.
“seems like it, yeah” was his rough answer.
“aren’t you forgetting something, iwa-chan?” he asked, cocking his head to the side at the same time a smile threatened to lift the corners of his pink lips.
iwaizumi let out a long sigh, a pained expression covering his handsome features. again, if anyone else saw him, he would think angry.
again, oikawa wasn’t anyone else and he couldn’t be fooled.
he tried to keep a cool expression when he saw him reach for the front pocket of his jeans.
tried not to cry when he pullet out a small black box.
tried not to jump him before he could get on one knee and ask.
“hey, shittykawa” his voice wavered a little. “wanna marry me?”
“iwa-chan, we said no weird names!” he complained, but even his whiny tone couldn’t hide the smile in his voice, the light in his eyes, the pink in his cheeks. “yes” he said. “yes, yes, yes” he kept repeating like a mantra.
kept repeating it while iwaizumi’s trembling hands took his.
kept repeating it while iwaizumi put the ring on his finger.
kept repeating it while he jumped to hug him and iwaizumi had to catch him in the air.
he could have keep saying yes for minutes, but, really, kissing his iwa-chan was far more important.
(oikawa won two things that day. his first olympic gold and, most importantly, a bet with his boyfriend. i mean, what better way to choose who proposes, right?)

Did everyone miss the fact that Oikawa won the olympics in 2021 (or at least placed bronze with argentina while japan didnt place) and iwa-chan and him reunited in japan?

Finally, Japan wins against Argentina in the Olympics and Iwaizumi, after the euphoria and joining in the collective hug with the whole team, approaches the net and passes under it, smiling when he sees Oikawa with a pout and his arms crossed.
"This game doesn't count," he mutters, but hugs Hajime tightly when he wraps his arms around him, his big hand warm against his back, between his shoulder blades.
"You played an amazing match" Iwaizumi swears, voice low and deep, just for Oikawa to hear.
And Oikawa believes him. He absolutely believes him. They played a good match, they were better (much, much better than against USA), but they weren't the six strongest. And that's fine. Because the world doesn't end. The world keeps turning, volleyball keeps existing, matches keep being played, opportunities keep coming, Hajime always stays.
"Make sure to avenge me against the USA, Iwa-chan."
Hajime chuckles, lifting his head to meet Oikawa's eyes. Oikawa smiles, soft and affectionate, only slightly tired but not defeated. And that's all Iwaizumi wants in the world.
He gives Oikawa a squeeze around the waist.
"And you, babe, make sure to avenge me against Germany."
...
JUST WAIT UNTIL I HAVE TIME THIS WEEK TO IMPROVE THIS DRABBLE BECAUSE IM STILL SCREAMING SINCE THE MATCH ENDED

watch party for japan vs. argentina men’s volleyball match tonight @ 8 pm!
osamu doodles jerseys in the corner – his brother’s #11 and his boyfriend’s #20. he stands to admire the sandwich board, startling at the voice behind him. “not #18 fer aran? that’s disrespectful of ya.”
“kita-san!” he whirls around to greet him, bowing slightly. “i know, but i have a feelin’ if i don’t put ‘tsumu’s number, he’s gonna blame me fer givin’ him bad luck.”
kita’s smile is slight, amused. “an’ suna?”
“that’s my boyfriend that yer talkin’ ‘bout.”
“yes, yes, as if i’d forget. i’m comin’ by later, so save me a seat, please. let’s talk more then.”
he watches him continue along, likely to visit the other shops on the block, and then ducks back inside his restaurant. it’ll get busy, if the tokyo olympics set any precedent, especially with how vital this match will be. after losing to germany, they’ll need to win, and then perform well against usa. only then will they qualify for the quarterfinals.
inside, the decorations have changed. the jerseys on the wall, once msby and ejp, are now their olympic counterparts. although the photos still show onigiri miya’s humble beginnings, he added a few taken with the team, including one where they’re all holding his onigiri. it pained him being unable to watch any of their games live, but he wouldn’t change it for the business it gave him.
for the rest of the day, he and his staff work to serve their customers, fulfill takeout orders, and prepare for the watch party. about half an hour until eight o’clock, he tunes into the sports channel, where subtitles of analysts discussing japan’s performance and future odds appear on screen.
there are two tvs – one on a shelf over the bar and the other in the corner of the seating area. he has a tablet set up behind the counter to watch whenever there are orders, but the livestream is still on standby. he turns the screen off as the door opens. “welcome back, kita-san. ya want the usual?”
“yes, please.” he takes the empty seat directly across from him, the same where any of their friends would sit whenever they visit. “are ya expectin’ a full house?”
“yeah, it’s usually busy. i imagine it’ll get busier once japan qualifies.” osamu takes a handful of rice and begins molding it. “they’re under a lotta pressure. ‘tsumu was almost in tears when he called.” it hurt that he couldn’t physically be there, relegated to phone calls and video calls, but if listening helped air out frustrations, he’d gladly sacrifice his sleep.
“the world is expectin’ a lot from them after they placed second in the vnl,” kita agrees. “hopefully, they’ll be able ta get it together tonight.” the two of them watched their friends and family compete mere months ago, bringing their nation to the podium, and consequently, to the top of the world. it’s natural to assume it’ll happen again, but so far, it isn’t easy as it sounds.
the clock strikes eight, and the broadcast starts with official warm-ups. atsumu and kageyama are setting to their players at the net, jumping to spike. it changes to serves, the players taking turns to warm up. osamu watches suna, who spins his ball as part of his pre-serve routine, and then tosses it for a jump floater. it isn’t as fast as atsumu’s, nor as deadly as kageyama's, but it’s earned them aces in the past. he hopes it’ll happen again.
the teams line up to sing their countries’ national anthems. a solemn silence falls over the restaurant as everyone follows along, osamu included. the camera zooms in on their faces, strict with determination and focus. suna looks into the camera when he’s in frame, and osamu whispers a voiceless prayer to him.
atsumu is the starting setter, along with ushijima, sakusa, aran, suna, and hakuba. yaku is their libero. the others stand on the sidelines. “must be goin’ fer heavy hitters to blow past argentina’s blocks,” kita comments. osamu nods in agreement.
oikawa tooru is argentina’s starting setter. the whistle blows, and the match begins.
cïżœïżœmon, guys. i know ya’ll can do it.
the first set doesn’t start off well. japan falls behind in the first half, falling short to argentina’s clean sets and spikes. hakuba is rotated to the back, and suna steps on, hands in front of him. he gets a hand on the spike, and sakusa receives it. atsumu sends it down the middle, suna jumping and rotating his torso to get around the block. japan gets the point.
his customers cheer. osamu hides a small fist pump under the counter. he shares a smile with kita. the commentators are just as excited as he is. “what an unbelievable spike from middle blocker suna rintarou! he’s known for his flexibility and game sense. will this give japan the push they need to get ahead?”
and he does. japan matches and overtakes argentina. kita claps at atsumu’s clean set to ushijima, who slams it down in the opposite court. the team huddles for a cheer and then take their positions. suna is back at the net, hands in front. his eyes widen at the camera pointed at him, and he rotates his fingers to form a heart, mouthing a message. he turns away at the whistle, but that’s enough for the world to see and wonder exactly what he said.
only osamu knows those words by heart.
japan takes the first and second set, but argentina comes back for the third. however, japan takes the fourth, after switching in hinata, and they cheer in celebration. argentina looks devastated, oikawa most of all, and osamu doesn’t miss how japan’s athletic trainer, iwaizumi, pats his arm off-court. he’s sure there’ll be more gestures once the cameras are turned away.
the customers begin to call for their bills and shuffle out. osamu gathers their dishes, kita helping despite osamu's protests, and it isn’t long before they’re the wiping tables clean. they listen to the post-game interview with the players, starting with aran, the captain, and then atsumu. finally, they talk to suna.
“you did an interesting gesture in the middle of the first set. would you like to explain what it means?”
osamu turns to watch. suna has a towel around his neck, hair unruly after the match. his voice doesn’t waver when he replies, “there’s a certain someone that i know is watching, and i wanted to let him know that i appreciate his support and love him.”
“is that related to what you said to the camera? fans are dying to know what you said, by the way.”
“yes, but that’s between me and him.” suna winks, turning slightly to face the camera again. “and if he’s watching – i know he is, by the way – i want him to know that i couldn’t have gotten this far without you.”
the broadcast ends. osamu smiles to himself, adding his rag with the others. he’ll lock up, head home, and text the team his congratulations. atsumu will probably call him in the middle of the night, again, to put him on video as they celebrate. osamu will lose sleep, again, but it’s worth it, seeing his brother happy, seeing his best friend glowing, and of course, his boyfriend living his best dream.
watch me, 'samu.
osamu will never take his eyes off him.

inspired by this fanart of suna's gesture and osamu's reaction! <3

bringing this fic back even though it’s been finished for a long time :) happy olympics !!!
Just realized I never posted this on my tumblr! So introducing my newest and longest WIP: an Olympics-centered fic following the OiKage fling and assorted fallout, including a kagehina and iwaoi endgame (slow burn on those tho, we gotta get some sweet oikage smut first). Posted ch.3 today, hoping to update weekly from here on out, until it’s complete. đŸ„‡Â

Timeskip ! Kenma Kozume who sponsors his best friend Shoyo, went to the 2024 Paris Olympics with you to support him and your younger brother, Kageyama Tobio. "Shoyo!! Tobio!!" You shouted from the VIP section. When the two heard your voice they immediately looked up and saw you with Kenma who sat beside you nonchalantly, waving.
Timeskip ! Kenma Kozume chuckled when you whispered "Japan is going to win, I just know it." which was visible through the camera that live recorded the two of you and the game.
Timeskip ! Kenma Kozume would hide behind you whenever the stadium's camera panned at both of you, while you posed a peace sign with your tongue out and winking.
Timeskip ! Kenma Kozume cheered silently for his best friend and your brother whenever they accomplished their quick attacks.
Timeskip ! Kenma Kozume who went down to the court to celebrate with his friend.
Timeskip ! Kenma Kozume blew up on the internet for supporting Shoyo in the Olympics with you and had a lot of official photos taken with you, Shoyo, Tobio, and Kenma.

iwaoi but nobody else on earth knows that they're basically married. iwaoi but oikawa is playing for argentina and iwaizumi is the athletic trainer and sports medic guy at the olympics for team japan. iwaoi but every time there's a short break or after every game iwaizumi is abandoning his team to go make sure his man is ok. all of team japan is just looking at each other like wtf
i literally only just finished the fic i started yesterday like actually twenty minutes ago and im already contemplating a new one. imagine alternating perspectives from all of team japan. imagine hinata and bokuto and atsumu stalking them both and following them and taking notes and kageyama trailing behind and refusing to admit he's curious even though he's so invested. UGH

some of my top haikyuu fanfictions (ranked accordingly)
Come Morning Light (354k) by SharkbaitSekki is the saddest, most devastating fic i have ever read. If you like gen fics, karasuno family, and angst, this genuinely hit all those boxes and more for me and changed my life because I read those sexy 350k words in less than 24 hours when i was 13 yrs old and i haven't ever forgotten this fic. I promise the premise is kinda intimidating and all but i swear to GOD this is my atyd. this is my in another life. this is my roman empire
the future is female (85k) by earlgray_milktea is the cutest, but at the same time one of the most satisfying fics i've ever read. just a completely enjoyable and investing fic all the way, and again the premise does sound kinda trope-y and all but this fic is so fun! and smart and clever and important! yes it is basically hinata as a girl posing as a boy just to be taken seriously in the volleyball scene, but it goes about it in such a smart way and! it stretches all the way from the start to the post-timeskip of haikyuu (but it's not a super long read).
national hot dad alliance is now calling... (58k) by dicaeopolis, owlinaminor is probably a fic you've seen before, and if you haven't read it it probably means you hate chatfics and think they're dumb but i PROMISE this fic is singlehandedly the most hilarious thing i have ever read. 58k doesn't sound extremely long, but this dumb silly thing lasted me so long because i would just read a bit whenever i needed a laugh, more than that it was also lowkey so sad towards the end and it didn't need to be, but it really adds to the completeness of this fic and i love it
chasing gold (45k) by skiecas is gonna be, like, the only fic here with hardcore romance and some sus bits that you can honestly just skip. Premise is basically Iwaoi throughout the years since highschool with a focus on the olympics, specifically; and i'm currently posting this at the time of the paris olympics szn, so if you're feeling festive, this is the fic! i also love when romance fics expand on the world around them, and this fic does exactly that with other characters' involvement and the overall amazingly fun, dramatic and grand backdrop of the olympics. such a good fic!
Come Back (25k) by Soralith deserves to be a STAPLE of haikyuu fanfiction, right up there with those mofos in another life and the galaxy is endless. why? well, it hits all the boxes - slash (kagehina), angst, DEATH, made me sob uncontrollably. read this guys its sad lol

Hello, Ever! I sincerely hope I am not bothering you. I have been following your art for a couple of years (roughly since 2021?) and I still find myself in awe whenever you post a new piece (including ones related to fandoms I am not into, like Dangan and HSR!). Your Xiaovens are the best. I have a somewhat selfish question: yes, I have just gotten into Haikyuu in 2024. Do you plan on selling merch of your previous hq works? They are all outstanding, your Iwaois make me go. Thank you in advance!
any year is a good year to get into haikyuu, one of the goats of sports manga!!! haha i was actually re-reading haikyuu recently myself...! my friend and i went to the paris olympics a month ago and attended the men's argentina vs japan volleyball match. shoutout to my fellow oikawa loving homies in the year 2024 including the cosplayers we met
i don't re-order old stuff, but i have a bin with leftovers from past shop openings i've been meaning to clear out... i've been contemplating giving them away for free if people are willing to just cover the shipping, but i haven't had time to take stock. if any hq/daiya/genshin etc folks are interested, i can try to poke thru it...!

i think part of the reason Iwaoi has the ability to make me so feral has almost nothing to do with any romantic relationship but rather the fact that they are equals in almost every way and yet Iwaizumi must still feel like he is powerless. Like we know Iwa is good at volleyball he's the ace and goes on to be the trainer for the japanese national team. And we know explicitly that Oikawa is not a prodigy, his technical skill has never been what makes him a good player, he is not someone Iwa wouldn't be able to keep up with. So Iwaizumi probably knows Oikawa's limits because he knows his own. And even though the infamous knee injury is technically not canon we know he does sustain an injury, we know he stays up all night preping for games, we know he stays in the gym long after practice is over until Iwa drags him out. Iwa and Oikawa may be equals, but Oikawa is an Icarus. They both have wax wings but only one of them is going to fly too high and come crashing down again. And Iwa knows this. He knows every game, every push forward, every move Oikawa makes is almost inherently destined to end in a firey blaze not because Oikawa isn't good enough but because he's not programmed to feel satisfied. Iwa has to send him off to Argentina. He has to see him at the Olympics, he has to watch him push himself higher and higher and higher and he must just be screaming inside 'can't you see we're wax wings? we're not eagles or crows, we can't go up that high' and yet there's nothing he can do because Icarus doesn't listen. Not in Crete and not in Japan and not in Argentina. All he can really do is learn how to manage sports injuries, learn how to stretch torn muscles, how to recover broken bones and sooth aggravated egos and be ready on the sidelines with burn salve and love. Whether or not you like to consider the relationship as romantic is up to you but I for one cannot fathom a more heartwrenching story than that. Do you think Iwa ever wondered if he were capable of loving his best friend enough to change his nature? Do you think his efforts to do so would be unfair to Daedalus, as if Iwa would be able to love someone more than a father loves his son? Would he try anyway? Do you think Oikawa knows any of this? Or does he just think Iwa's concern comes from thinking Oikawa isn't good enough to compete with the birds? When Oikawa hits the ocean, do you think he'll realize it's not his fault that wax melts in the sun?
