this was one of the coolest details in dark souls that i've discovered
the pyromancy on the left is Fire Snake from DS2.
this pyromancy was created by the Magus Eygil, the court pyromancer of Alken (and the only person that the Old Iron King respected other than Alonne lmao), he's often depicted as a minotaur:
Eygil's idol:
minotaur helm, likely Eygil's:
being the court pyromancer, he was the one who helped for the building of Brume Tower, and likely the one who led the creation of the two Smelter demons
and we know that one of them led to the downfall of Alken.
on the right there is Dark Serpent, a pyromancy that is obtainable if Wolnir's soul is traded with Ludleth, and it's identical to Fire Snake.
so it is very likely that Eygil managed to survive Alken's downfall, and became the court pyromancer of Carthus (boy has a thing for tyrannical rulers lol)
i found cute how Wolnir invaded what remained of Alken and found Eygil, who likely teached him his pyromancies.
and the fact that one of the pyromancies can be obtainable through his SOUL means that Wolnir was very intrigued of his pyromancies and they became buddies!
also last thing, the corpse that drops the Grave Warden Pyromancer tome, that grants pyromancies of the same type as Black Serpent, is likely Eygil's.
i love fromsoft details

What's something about the soulsborne games that utterly enrages you (excluding difficulty or bullshit gameplay moments)? For me it’s the absolute mutilation of lore that mistranslation quite often causes, and specifically that one humongous error that somehow had “King of Alken” and “Queen of Venn” being translated to prince and princess respectively. Like. Seriously. (more ranting below this picture by IllusoryWall on Imgur btw).
THEY DOWNGRADED THEM TWO ENTIRE NOBILITY TITLES HOW CAN YOU BE SO OFF WITH A TRANSLATION LIKE WHAT THE FUCK??? AND ON TOP OF THAT FUCKING GILLIGAN COMES UP AND MAKES IT ALL EVEN MORE JACKASS BY SPREADING MISINFORMATION CUZ HE CLEARLY HAS NO IDEA WHAT HE’S TALKING ABOUT I SWEAR TO JESUS.
Ok now about the Gilligan thing I’m not actually too mad, it makes sense that a random Volgenian scammer doesn’t know perfectly about events that happened in and around current Drangleic centuries prior, the real issue is, again, the mistranslation.
Why is it such a problem? Because if it wasn’t for the mistranslation, it would have been easy to put together the various descriptions (i.e Ring of Blades) the game gives us to come to the conclusion that the “King of Alken” is the Old Iron King, aka that one insane sadistic megalomaniac who built the Undead Purgatory.
And about him, here’s a fanart by Zarathursta on ds reactor of his wife Mytha and Lost Sinner (aka the Queen of Venn, explanation below the fanart)
The existence of this fanart makes me happy because it means someone a long time ago did manage to figure out the actual story regardless of the mistranslation.
Nevertheless, the pretty much only candidate that makes sense is the Lost Sinner: she has a big ass cell and a powerful soul, reconstruction of the events follows.
These two (speculatively, supposedly) had a forbidden love story (Alken and Venn were sworn enemies since forever), Oik then proceeded to go insane, get really pissed at her (presumably because of something having to do with linking the Fire, Shalquoir tells us) conquer Venn and leave his ex in the cell we find her when we fight her.
This Romeo and Juliet ahh love story with a terrifyingly bad ending was hidden from us because some idiot at the localization team confused king and queen for prince and princess.
AND GODDAM. FUCKING. SCHOLAR. DIDN’T EVEN BOTHER TO FIX IT. ARE YOU FUCKING FOR REAL BRO.
And yes, Alken still exists during the events of the games, or at least its ruins do, it’s fallen but its territories haven’t been taken by anyone yet, likely seeing Mytha is still around to supposedly rule, as insane as she is, once again thank you goddam Gilligan for saying Earthen Peak is a part of Drangleic when there is not the slightest trace of anything Drangleic related in sight and there is A LITERAL QUEEN THAT IS CLEARLY NOT THE QUEEN OF DRANGLEIC. GILLIGAN FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.

I've made this doodle late at night with some plot in mind, but forgot about it in the morning. Post it here anyway because this picture doesn't need a plot to describe the vibe (and also because there is criminally little content with these disastrous guys in fandom, lol).

The Old Iron King was the most successful ruler before Vendrick, having conquered what remained of Alken and Venn. Even the Mad Knight of Alken couldn't stop his advance.

this guy is never talked about but is actually top tier meme potential
Duke Tseldora!!
the duke of the Old Iron King, this guy started digging in the Brightstone Cove and randomly found Seath's crystals (which probably came to Alken because of the Flame fucking up space and time...)
he then settled in his Private Chamber studying Seath and Logan's documents and asked his people to dig up more, and they eventually found Freja, which led the duke to become obsessed towards spiders!
eventually he went hollow because he realized his cute lil spiders weren't so cute after all... (they were parasites)
honestly Tseldora is so silly, just a duke minding his own business chilling with his spiders and his crystals...
also, he was the only one (other than Aldia and Vendrick) who knew about Velka!!
there are many Velka-related stuff in his cove, such as the statue in the Prowling Magus' boss area, and of course, the presence of Cromwell
also many people claims that he is actually Vendrick's duke, but honestly... i think it makes more sense that he is the Iron King's duke
in his cove there are the same mages who are also in Huntsman's Copse and the Undead Purgatory, both Alken's settlement (also Vendrick didn't really liked mages, as stated in the Varangian Sword description...)
also, i don't think Vendrick would've let the Brightstone Cove died out, as loving as he is for his court. however i can totally see the Iron King genuinely not caring about the conditions of the cove lmao
also hey! Gwyn/Seath parallel!
sighh i love Alkenian guys...

for character ask meme: Old Iron King
YO i did NOT expect this, welcomed surprise! I love me a good old unhinged evil character.
Favorite thing about them: the religious psychosis madness he has to his character, that whole Nahr Alma being his creation and him proceeding to make the literal Colosseum: Torture Edition™ in his name (should i make a post abt that..?)
Least favorite thing about them: everything (/jk nothing really except how unknown he is in the fandom).
Favorite line: he dont got no dialogue....
brOTP: him and Alonne! Before he proceeded to go insane and cause Alonne to go to Brume Tower that is..
OTP: x Lost Sinner (Queen of Venn, which is a solid theory so almost canon ship) again, before shit went downhill..
nOTP: uhh no idea..
Random headcanon: he had some SERIOUS beef with Vendrick (for snatching sum of his territories) and would talk shit about him with Alonne and Eygil at the slightest mention of him.
Unpopular opinion: his character is inspired by Nero, the Roman emperor known for going on a killing streak and getting a humongous statue of himself (has been gone for ages now) near the Colosseum in Rome.
Song I associate with them: Kiss me Son of God by They Might Be Giants, every single line is so him coded
Favorite picture of them: (by @maranigai )

No, but seriously, how lucky was House Targaryen to have Maegor? RIP Aegon and Viserys, obviously, but think about it. Aegon conquered six of the seven kingdoms and "unified" them under his control, but the Faith Militant were the one thing you never want as an absolute monarch: a large, independent military force tied to the "state" religion.
Not only did Maegor (and Visenya, let's not discount her contributions) entirely dismantle that threat, they established their control over the Faith and gave the realm several reminders of just how much it sucks to have even one dragon breathing fire down upon your holdfast.
All of which made Jaehaerys's life so much easier when he came to power. He got to be the "Conciliator", the reasonable Targaryen, the example of "see? absolute monarchs can keep things running smoothly." While leveraging the memory of Maegor's threat to secure the Doctrine of Exceptionalism as a way for the Faith to save face. "Targaryens are just special, everyone else has to follow the old rules."
(There are many other ways in which House Targaryen lucked into having some good reigns after never having ruled at a kingdom level, of course, but that's for another post.)
#resonant lore#(not really resonant lore but i don't have a good tag for general asoiaf meta)#one thing that worked out fairly well for the iron throne and house targaryen imo was that they WERE outsiders#aka if any of the existing kings had taken power there would have been old struggles/bad blood and favoritism toward the “main” kingdom#whereas the targaryens had never been kings; they jumped straight there but didn't have any baggage#and had happily already adopted the general customs/religion of the neighboring kingdoms
