What's something about the soulsborne games that utterly enrages you (excluding difficulty or bullshit gameplay moments)? For me it’s the absolute mutilation of lore that mistranslation quite often causes, and specifically that one humongous error that somehow had “King of Alken” and “Queen of Venn” being translated to prince and princess respectively. Like. Seriously. (more ranting below this picture by IllusoryWall on Imgur btw).
THEY DOWNGRADED THEM TWO ENTIRE NOBILITY TITLES HOW CAN YOU BE SO OFF WITH A TRANSLATION LIKE WHAT THE FUCK??? AND ON TOP OF THAT FUCKING GILLIGAN COMES UP AND MAKES IT ALL EVEN MORE JACKASS BY SPREADING MISINFORMATION CUZ HE CLEARLY HAS NO IDEA WHAT HE’S TALKING ABOUT I SWEAR TO JESUS.
Ok now about the Gilligan thing I’m not actually too mad, it makes sense that a random Volgenian scammer doesn’t know perfectly about events that happened in and around current Drangleic centuries prior, the real issue is, again, the mistranslation.
Why is it such a problem? Because if it wasn’t for the mistranslation, it would have been easy to put together the various descriptions (i.e Ring of Blades) the game gives us to come to the conclusion that the “King of Alken” is the Old Iron King, aka that one insane sadistic megalomaniac who built the Undead Purgatory.
And about him, here’s a fanart by Zarathursta on ds reactor of his wife Mytha and Lost Sinner (aka the Queen of Venn, explanation below the fanart)
The existence of this fanart makes me happy because it means someone a long time ago did manage to figure out the actual story regardless of the mistranslation.
Nevertheless, the pretty much only candidate that makes sense is the Lost Sinner: she has a big ass cell and a powerful soul, reconstruction of the events follows.
These two (speculatively, supposedly) had a forbidden love story (Alken and Venn were sworn enemies since forever), Oik then proceeded to go insane, get really pissed at her (presumably because of something having to do with linking the Fire, Shalquoir tells us) conquer Venn and leave his ex in the cell we find her when we fight her.
This Romeo and Juliet ahh love story with a terrifyingly bad ending was hidden from us because some idiot at the localization team confused king and queen for prince and princess.
AND GODDAM. FUCKING. SCHOLAR. DIDN’T EVEN BOTHER TO FIX IT. ARE YOU FUCKING FOR REAL BRO.
And yes, Alken still exists during the events of the games, or at least its ruins do, it’s fallen but its territories haven’t been taken by anyone yet, likely seeing Mytha is still around to supposedly rule, as insane as she is, once again thank you goddam Gilligan for saying Earthen Peak is a part of Drangleic when there is not the slightest trace of anything Drangleic related in sight and there is A LITERAL QUEEN THAT IS CLEARLY NOT THE QUEEN OF DRANGLEIC. GILLIGAN FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.

I've made this doodle late at night with some plot in mind, but forgot about it in the morning. Post it here anyway because this picture doesn't need a plot to describe the vibe (and also because there is criminally little content with these disastrous guys in fandom, lol).

The Old Iron King was the most successful ruler before Vendrick, having conquered what remained of Alken and Venn. Even the Mad Knight of Alken couldn't stop his advance.

It's really interesting that Wynne actually has quite a measured, bordering on downright sympathetic response to hearing what Jowan did in the prologue -- if the mage Warden says "I still can't believe Jowan was that stupid", her answer is something like a thoughtful "Stupid, or desperate, or merely curious?". She seems to think of Jowan as a kid who got in over his head, rather than any less charitable interpretation. I do believe she genuinely is as against blood magic as she publicly expresses and as the Circle party line demands, but as a private person she clearly has a more nuanced and potentially kinder understanding of the reasons why someone might resort to it, at the very least.
(related: when she says that part about Irving telling her what happened, there's no dialogue option in the first stage of the conversation (except choosing the 'leaving the conversation' one) that doesn't net you +2 approval! no matter how the warden feels about it, she is ready to recieve it. I think that says something sweet about how Wynne conceptualizes younger mages and the honest real affection she has for them. if you didn't snitch on jowan and say you stand by that decision, though? +3 approval, apparently! what Wynne says and what Wynne thinks is not always the same thing indeed, her idea of where personal loyalty and integrity stands vis-a-vis a mage's responsibility to the circle may be more flexible than she'd have people believe, you'll be surprised to learn lol)
I have always liked wynne and found her interesting, in all her hypocrisies and her earnest care, but with slightly older eyes she's extra fascinating to me in the same ways that Iron Bull is -- seeing someone whose mind has had hollows carved out in it by the need for double-think and compartmentalization imposed by the oppressive systems and ideologies they live under, and the quiet fight of the self to still preserve vital parts of itself that the system deems unacceptable in the hidden backstage areas of the soul, as it were. (and for both of them part of that self is love and protectiveness of specific other people, beyond what their 'role' dictates is acceptable for them.) I think Wynne has managed to sneak more of her internal self through the meatgrinder relatively intact than Bull overall, but it's the same logic underlying it, for me, and it makes me feel such intense affection and compassion for them both to see how hard they try
#dragon age#dragon age origins#wynne#iron bull#my warden and wynne actually have quite similar feelings and views about the circle so it's really interesting#conflicted love is one hell of a tradition to pass down and boy do they do that lmao look the circle really is a family!#it has intricacies of intergenerational trauma being inherited and everything#I think sophia reaches the 'ok. alright. I'm going to stop being polite pretend centrist about this' stages earlier#but her being more open about it is mostly about her being uniquely protected by her role in the wardens#(and being the king's if-not-for-the-laws-of-this-land-and-the-finer-points-of-political-marriage wife lmao)#and knows it; she has less to be responsible for in the circle itself now. I think she and wynne Understand each other by then#asunder is a book of. many parts! let's say lol but wynne's characterization in it is so good#she was about to go absolutely nutso mode after stuff started to go south and I love that for her#her gloves have been on her whole life but oh she is aware of that and would have taken them off and then some in that moment#the older you get the funnier wynne actually being like 50 gets tho. oh no. at death's door. ancient. aged. she has outlived the ages#how the fuck old is irving btw since he's alive and kicking during the ending of asunder (<3 love you dad)#also. yes. yes I am still on my iron bull bullshit I may never truly be off it he makes me so impossibly sad and so insane

and another thing!!!
frieren is a series where to love is to remember!! we see frieren and co. taking care of the statues because it's an act of love!!! constantly, continuously, affection is carrying someone's memory forward!! himmel wants a thousand statues so frieren isn't lonely!! so that they don't fade into fairy tales!!
and then!!! and then!! you give us macht??? the gold he makes is worthless!! because it cannot be changed, it cannot be broken, it cannot be melted!! because the point isn't that it's "gold" the point is that it freezes a moment, it makes a monument that will never fade nor tarnish!! what is that if not an act of love??
#sousou no frieren#frieren: beyond journey's end#frieren at the funeral#macht of the golden land#lord gluck#i'm unwell about the old man yaoi in this series#m metas#i am also insane about the way this series treats the inevitable disparity between how humans elves and demons view things#brought about by the insurmountable distance in perception of time#ironically#macht is the closest to loving the same way frieren does#i'm super excited for the moment we meet the demon king ngl#just in general the actual psychology of the demons is so...... *chef's kiss*#can't wait to find out more#snf

I could draw something normal, but I drew a meme with Iron king. In 2023 /sigh/
P.s. He hates when someone calls his domain a "wasteland", it's not a wasteland, it's an industrial area, it's not his fault that he lives in pre-industrial fantasy world.
