What makes the van scene so much more to me is that it’s not just a declaration of Joe’s love and devotion for Nicky. It’s not just a way to give Nicky a moment to get his bearings. It’s not just a full-throated defense of their relationship.

It’s not like other declaration of love scenes. It’s not a desperate goodbye in the face of torture or death. It’s not even a soft moment for both of them to realize how much the other means to them. They already know. They’ve known for 900 years that their world and their heart begins and ends with the other man. It’s the certainty written across both their faces. The only person who exists in that space, to them, is each other. The scene is a settlement of their love, how certain they are in each other. There are no doubts when they look into each other’s eyes. They match each other thought for thought. We are supposed to feel the weight of their life together, but it’s still a moment just for the two of them.

I can appreciate Booker was drunk longer, Quynh/Noriko was trapped longer, Joe and Nicky have loved longer and Andromache has lived longer but for this mere mortal this wait is something else.
