Another good episode, and this one is Sarah-centric.

me watching for the first time: I'm sure Sarah's casual dinner with her old professor and his wife will turn out to be just good fun.

Lots of guest stars that I recognize on this one too.

"I don't deserve her". You absolutely don't.

And then the camera literally pans to Charlie. Like, what was anyone supposed to assume from this?

No but this is actually sweet because this means that Charlie went to the trouble of finding someone who could print these.

"I don't care. It's Friday night, Charlie! Why are we still at the office?" (I don't know if it was actually Friday. It was certainly past working hours because Sarah was at the dinner.)

I wonder how Diesel knew which identical rectangle to hit with his paw. Did they put a scent on the right one?

The look on his face! I'm not unaffected.

"And you are so bad. Why do you need my help to find these pictures? I know your nose is broken because you can't sniff for shit but what happened to your brain?"

Even when we don't have work to do, one of us will stumble on a case.

This is one of the cases where I knew the actor playing the professor beforehand so I was sure they'd cast him as the murderer. And even if I wasn't suspecting him when I saw him, I would have when he offered to draw his blood himself.

Sarah disregarding proper procedure in this case perfectly showcases why members of the police should recuse themselves if they have a personal involvement of any kind (Are you listening, Charlie?). Even in this case where Sarah wanted to find what actually happened (because it is often that people in her position might not), her personal involvement clouded her judgement.

Well, Charlie was immediately suspicious, which is good.

"Professional jealousies are part of the landscape when you have a luminous career like his." Erm, I'd bench her just for using luminous, to be honest. This is borderline fangirling and I wonder how Charlie didn't entertain the idea that Sarah might at one point even have a crush on her professor. Obviously if he'd expressed that thought, we'd still be hearing about it in the fandom but I'm just saying.

Pumpkin Spice, this is not. I'm semi nuts about it as well. First of all, it's a latte. Second, it usually has an orange-y hue, not completely orange but enough to remind of pumpkin and less of a normal latte. That thing looks like chocolate (also, Mayko Nguyen was pregnant at the time so it's probably not coffee at all). It's more possible that the other one is pumpkin spice latte. Anyway, he brought her coffee again. Sidenote: This scene led me down a rabbit hole of Starbucks trademarked coffees. Pumpkin Spice Latte is not their trademark, though they have trademarked PSL.

The "snow" in the Wizard of Oz movie was 100% pure asbestos.

Not only that, the Scarecrow stuffed his outfit with asbestos to prevent it from catching on fire.

The original Tin Man had his face painted with pure aluminum dust, which led to respiratory problems that sent him to the hospital. The film producer decided to replace him with actor Jack Haley. However, Haley was not immune to the toxic makeup, which caused an eye infection and made him miss four days of filming.

Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch of the West also put on extremely toxic makeup that contained high levels of copper. Her makeup artist, Jack Young, once said, “Green is toxic because it’s made with copper. Every night when I was taking off the Witch’s makeup, I would make sure that her face was thoroughly clean. Spotlessly clean. Because you don’t take chances with green.”

Once she put on her makeup, Hamilton was forced to stick to a strict liquid-only diet to prevent her from ingesting any of the toxic paint.

Judy Garland was only 16 years old when she started filming the Wizard of Oz. On set, she was shunned by the Scarecrow, Tinman and the Cowardly Lion due to jealousy. Her only friend was Margaret Hamilton.

Garland was also placed on a strict diet which consisted of chicken soup, coffee and 80 cigarettes a day. She then became reliant on amphetamines in her late teens and at 19 she collapsed from exhaustion. Instead of being told to rest, doctors prescribed her more amphetamines.

Hmm picture this, a pregnant Beniot playing Among Us with a few celebrities in the living room couch. He meets up with a group of his old detective club and as they're chatting away, talking about what they did with their lives (one's an actor, another is a doctor, the third is an animal trainer and the fourth is a CEO of a company that helps make safe sanitary pads and tampons for women of all kind including those who are transiting to a man if they haven't gotten bottom surgery done), a scream is heard and a body is found by the gang. So Beniot decided he'll look for the killer, with the group following him around to help out as well.

Benoit lounging around their apartment because he’s in the third trimester and he knows Philip wants him to relax and be careful, but he is so bored and unstimulated! His celebrity friends (this time - Tony Shaloub, Walter Mosley, Gillian Anderson, and Robert Downey Jr.) ask after him and the pregnancy, and he admits that while he’s eager to have the babies, he does wish things were a little decentered from them at the moment, especially since Philip is to be away for some weeks time.

When the invitation arrives, it’s written with an old cipher the group used back in the old days and he’s delighted to remember it and have the offer to visit. Nothing against your suggestion, but I think he would tell Philip about the trip and the man would hesitantly allow it, with certain restrictions about how he cares for himself during it (which he obviously neglects to some degree). After getting a doctor’s note to fly, he packs his bags and is off to New Orleans, invitation in hand. Also I’m just picturing a scene on the plane where he’s stuck next to some overly friendly person that keeps asking him about the pregnancy and putting their hands on his stomach in a mad intrusive way, but Blanc is just too polite to tell them off, lol.

He goes to meet the group at a restaurant and everyone seems quite happy to see one another. My cast for the group in my mind is Laurence Fishburne for the actor, Lucy Liu for the doctor, Hugh Jackman for the animal trainer, and Octavia Spencer for the CEO. They talk about their jobs, their families, how mystery solving has fit into their worlds. I imagine there would be some amount of jealousy over how Blanc was the only one that made a career out of it. But otherwise it is a lovely evening of old and new memories.

They end up trying to continue the night in Blanc’s fancy hotel (I’m picturing Maison de la Luz - look up pics, it would be perfect for this), only to get barely up to his room when they hear screaming from what turns out to be the guest house. They arrive to a body just before the hotel staff does and while the police are called, Blanc still offers his - and the group’s - expertise. So much for staying stress-free for the sake of the babies.

robert duncan neil: i don’t mind the emergency medical hologram doctor having a crush on kes, but seeing them kiss kinda gross me out a bit. the actors’ age difference is… a lot, yk?

garrett wang (and me): oh but kes/neelix doesn’t bother you at all? ethan phillips is even older than robert picardo!

robert duncan neil: that’s different! neelix is kinda… ageless? timeless? he’s childish a lot of the time, and the prosthetics mean it’s hard to tell what he’s actually supposed to be, (so talaxians could just look old but he could be younger than we know since his age is never stated), whereas the emergency medical hologram doctor looks and acts like a 40 year old man, so in the episode projections, watching 40ish robert picardo kissing 3 year old (with a life span of 8 years) kes played by 20ish jennifer lien… reimagined as lewis zimmerman’s (holographic medical doctor’ creator) wife… it’s kinda… ugh? i can’t get away from the reality as much?

i… hm. idk. i’ve genuinely been curious about the opinion of kes/neelix, considering RDN has been so vocal about how chakotay and other stuff haven’t aged well on the show. (i kinda assume he didn’t really talk about it with robert beltran on an earlier episode because they’ve likely talked about it before/off-mike delta flyers podcast, but idk.) some stuff i agree with, others not so much. but.

i… kinda don’t like kes/neelix as a ship, for me the actor’s real life age difference is too much of a stretch, and i’m… not really sure the characters get much out of being a romantic couple tbh?? i like their interactions just without the romance angle tbh

but. hm. neelix possibly being younger than ethan phillips, who was, what, 50ish? at the time? so the childishness, the temper tantrums of jealousy, the exuberance… combined with being a bit of cynical rough around the edges savvy business rat who knows a lot because he’s travelled the delta quadrant… might make the characters more on an equal playing field … and reflect the character more understandably better…?

but… idk. in a way… i still kinda feel that emh/kes is more palatable, bc… he looks like a 40 year old man, but has only been alive, so to speak, for six months, as of s2, and kes is helping him find some humanity/things that aren’t inherent to his initial programming. while the trade off is that he teaches her medical stuff. like… no, i don’t especially want to see emh/kes kissing or being in a romantic pairing either, i like seven/emh too and maybe i do think it’s better onesided from emh’s side… (but i do like the idea of them being in a romantic relationship tbh…), it’s… idk.

something to think about. i personally can’t get away from ethan phillip’s age when watching kes/neelix scenes, whereas i can for emh, bc he was “brought to life”/born in the pilot. but given the choice of watching a 50yo or a 40yo kiss a 20yo, and… i’d rather have neither, in all honesty.

but yeah, truthfully i’ve been surprised by the silence of kes/neelix being talked in a negative light—bc both characters are genuinely great from the get go, and it makes sense that both RDN and garrett wang would be positive towards neelix bc he’s both friend and character that they’ve known for years, but i’ve been iffy on the ship—but. and this does explain it somewhat.

i’m not totally convinced, truth be told. but i think it might be a reasonable starting point and reassess. but i. i do want them to get ethan phillips on the podcast and see if they can get his thoughts tbh.

i do think the jealousy in school reunion is really interesting i think thats a really fun part of the doctor companion dynamic to explore, what makes me roll my eyes is the we're both in love with him "the missus and the ex" thing

but like the jealousy thing on its own? just the flipside of the making people feel special thing that we explored a bit with 12. the doctor does single people out, does make them feel special, their attention is like a fucking spotlight who would be immune to that warmth

but the other side of that then is like, was it their attention that made me special? was it their companionship that made me special? thinking of donna going travelling "it's all bus trips and guidebooks and dont drink the water and two weeks later youre back home" like sure thats comparing what the trips are like but like, that also describes sort of like, who you get to be on those trips right? a tourist vs a hero

thinking of yaz in combat magicks being like "yaz liked wearing her uniform because it marked her out as someone who belonged anywhere. ready to help, and with the right to intervene. the doctor just breezed in and made the whole universe her business, like she was born to it, and yaz longed for that confidence." thats sort of what being the doctor's plus one gives you, right? access to everywhere, without consequences, except maybe your own death but the doctor makes you feel invincible too so you dont worry about that

so sure there would be jealousy but i think making it into an ex-girlfriend kinda jealousy flattens it? "in amongst 7 billion theres someone like you" and then you get to save planets. you become a part of the doctor's hero complex. you get to see beautiful amazing things but you also get to prove yourself a hero every day. thinking of rose "the doctor showed me a better way of living your life. you dont just give up. you have the guts to do whats right when everyone else just runs away" you get to feel powerful. you get a lot of agency where in your daily life you probably dont have a lot. thats what the doctor gives to those handful of the seven billion. so what if they take it away?

thinking of clara asking "why me?" and sarah jane "did i do something wrong?" why did i get this opportunity. and why was it taken away. was it anything i did? and if it wasnt, then doesnt that undermine all that agency you made me feel like i had? can i do this on my own too? and of course lots of companions prove they can, they dont need the doctor to be who they are but idk. i think it would still be kinda insecure-making when youre still with the doctor. when youre still in the middle of it like rose in school reunion. when you dont know yet what After will look like

and this is something the fam doesnt have to deal with i think. because they came to the doctor. they werent picked, they werent offered, they asked. they dont have to wonder 'why did you pick me'. which im kinda relieved about especially thinking about yaz? imagine having to wonder 'was i a friend of convenience' on top of everything else. oof.

and another thing is that of course for the doctor the rejection hurts just as much. when a companion says no thank you, your way of life doesnt seem that fun to me (anymore)

anyway so uh tldr i guess the jealousy thing is interesting but making it a romantic jealousy is not whats interesting about it

The Real Deal

Part 3 - A Brazilian Oyster

Description: Bill and Cassandra have been friends a long time and with time realize Cassandra he is her dream but not just him but also his lifestyle.

Characters: AU Single Bill Skarsgård. A version of Bill where he becomes single 2017 and with a different timeline. AU Skarsgårds and others. The rest is my own original characters.

Setting: The story will jump from 2001 until present day.

Notes: There is some truth but most of it is imagination.

It wasn't like it came as a surprise. Sure, Bill had spoken loosely about becoming a doctor or studying anthropology at the university but after doing a small role for a big movie and then being the lead in a children's movie it was obvious he had chosen his path. While Bill continued to film movie after movie another twenty year old sat in Brighton unemployed. Cassie was happy for Bill but it was also provoking. She couldn't even afford a new pair of boots while he started to earn serious money. It was even more provoking because his family had a lot of money from the start. Sure they had other problems, his mom sickness and alcoholism, his father's new much younger wife and Gustaf's, his brother's, more and more worrying party behavior. But Cassie had her own problems with unemployment and a mother who barely could support her adult daughter and a teenage son; so Cassie couldn't really see that Bill struggled too. At the same time she grieved that she hadn't been accepted to London College of Fashion while her friends had been accepted to their respective schools. She thought about becoming a hairdresser like her mom but she didn't want to have such little income her mother had. She wanted to do something bigger and more glamorous. Like Bill did. She also wanted to eat at expensive restaurants, live at luxurious hotels and get invited to fabulous parties.

2011, the year Bill got his real break in Sweden. Three expensive projects with him as the lead in all of them and he had several modeling offers. Meanwhile, Cassie ended another short term employment at a nursing home. They hadn't seen each other since 2009 and Bill sounded desperate on the phone. Cassie had mixed feelings with meeting him. He talked about visiting her in England along with his girlfriend. His first love. Karin and Bill had stopped seeing each other just two weeks after the party Cassie had attended. After that he had several short connections to girls but in 2009 he fell in love, for real, as he said. 2009 was also the year Cassie got her first boyfriend and lost her virginity but she couldn't really recognize that sort of love Bill seemed to have to his girlfriend in her own relationship. Her boyfriend broke up after three months having met another girl while Bill continued to be committed to his girlfriend and they were still together in 2011. They seemed to be a golden couple. She had seen all the cute photos of them on Facebook and heard Bill talk affectionately about her. To meet Bill right now felt like asking to feel lousy. She was unemployed, had the same old clothes and was single. Meeting Mr. Actor with a tall, blonde girlfriend wasn't the dream but Cassie couldn't say no to Bill. Especially not when he used his sweet voice and said he would pay for dinner and everything. He was sweet, he was her oldest friend and probably the one friend that cared the most about her.

She met them at their hotel. Of course they were at Café Royal. In the heart of London, with trendy, fresh interior and also cost 800 pounds per night. Bill said it was his father who suggested he must try London's best hotel so he had paid for it. Cassie thought about the talks Stellan had about not spoiling his kids. Maybe he didn't give them money all the time but he sure gave them expensive gifts.

Cassie looked around at the extravagant lobby and felt like she didn't fit in. She looked down at her worn out boots. She could feel that rain water had seeped inside them. She thought about turning around, go home and throw the fucking boots out. Was Bill really worth this humiliation? Just then she heard a pling from the elevator and Bill came out. She hadn't really gotten used to his full height and more masculine body. It was her Bill but at the same time a completely different person. He was dressed in tight gray jeans, a white t-shirt and a black blazer. He looked like a model, really. You could throw such words around sometimes to explain an attractive person but Bill really looked like a model. That sort of model you should take black and with pictures of in a dramatic black coat or a tailored suit. Cassie was so mesmerized by his looks she didn't think about that he was alone. Bill smiled big and she could see how people looked at him, like he was a celebrity they couldn’t remember what they recognized him from. Bill didn't seem to react to it. He walked up to her and gave her a bear hug and kissed her forehead.

"Hej finaste," said he in Swedish. He had said that before so she knew it meant "hey the most beautiful." Cassie smiled and hugged him again. She had missed him so much and couldn't believe that she thought about canceling or even running away.

"Hey handsome. God, every woman in the room is looking at you," she said with a smile and kept her hands inside his jacket around his waist. Bill removed them carefully but she didn't seem to react to it.

"It's because I'm tall," he said and looked around in the lobby. It was then Cassie remembered he had his girlfriend with him but she wasn't with him now.

"Are you alone..?" She questioned and looked behind him toward the elevators like his girlfriend would suddenly show up.

"Yeah. She was tired and thought we could get some alone time. She will join us for dinner. Do you want to have a drink with me here at the hotel?" Bill pointed towards the restaurant. Cassie started to count her money in her head. Bill would pay for the restaurant so she hadn't really thought she would use so much of her own money.

"I’ll pay, of course," he said and smiled knowingly. Cassie felt embarrassed about him paying for everything but she was grateful and she knew Bill hated when people couldn't just accept his generosity.

"Okay," said Cassie and smiled, linking her arm with his.

The bar was luxurious, gold and green with wooden details. It looked like something from a movie. Bill ordered two glasses of champagne while she waited in a velvety chair. She looked around at the people and stopped at Bill. He wasn't at all as fancy dressed as the other guests but something about his aura made it seem as though he were the wealthiest in the room, or at least the most famous one. She could see his boots also were worn out but he didn't seem to care. With a face like that no one was looking at his shoes.

They sat face to face talking about life, nostalgia, music, movies and even fashion. Bill told her about the modeling job for H&M he had been signed to and his dreams about an international acting career. He seemed so content with life. Cassie talked about her dream of studying fashion and becoming a stylist.

"But like, did you just apply to one school?" Said Bill and then gave a wordless message to the bartender that they wanted two more glasses.

"Yeah?"

"You should really search more otherwise you will maybe wait forever. Have you thought about maybe applying in other countries?"

Cassie looked at Bill's wide eyes. He was the only one that really took an interest in her dreams.

"No… Should I do that? Can I do that?" She asked him like he had all the answers in the world.

"Of course you can! Nothing is stopping you. You can even get scholarships. You just have to work for it." He said. Cassie could almost feel how her image of Bill had changed right there. Maybe he hadn't gotten everything in life through his father, maybe he also never let anyone stop him. Cassie smiled and took Bill's hand.

"Could you help me?"

"Sure. But not right now, right now we should drink champagne and eat oysters. The sleeping beauty doesn't eat them anyway. Have you tried it?"

Cassie made a grimace. Everyone she had talked to said it was like a booger with salt water. Bill ordered half a dozen anyway. They had three each and Bill ordered two more glasses of champagne even if Cassie hadn't finished the last.

"Do you know how to eat them?" Bill said, taking an oyster into his big hand, Cassie did the same and watched with big eyes and shook her head.

"Well, some don't remove the whole muscle on the side so you should check that first but this is a fancy place so they have removed it. Then you take the fork…" he watched her take her fork as he did it and then he spinned it around in the shell.

"Just spin so it's loose, it can be stuck at the side. So, these have already a vinaigrette as you see but otherwise you take some lemon. Dad likes the classic way so I have mostly eaten it that way." Cassie smiled at him, a little amused.

"Bill, I know you don't want to talk about this, but how are you after the break up?" Cassie asked carefully while playing with a hair clip.

"Good," Bill said fast, too fast. "It was probably for the best, you know."

"So, you have processed it then?"

"Yeah. Cassie, It's okay. I have moved on. I even was with another girl here in LA."

Cassie wanted to sigh, it was so obvious he just tried to sweep his emotions under the rug but she didn't know how to tell him that without him shutting out his emotions even more.

BL tends to have a pattern of the seme having to deal with ex-girlfriends and the uke having to deal with wanna-be boyfriends. This is to establish the romantic/sexual desirability of the character within their assigned roles. The seme is so verile and strong, women (or in rare cases ex-boyfriends if the seme is out gay) swoon all over him and never want to let him go. While the uke is so vulnerable and gentle, men who identify as strong and verile want to take care of him and pursue him.

If the faen fatal is given too much motivation and sympathy they become complex characters in their own right and the audience can fall in love with them. Which is kinda fun. This happened with Folk and Na. They became much greater than the sum of their faen fatal parts.

I'm enjoying Golden Blood partly because they introduced a couple of faen fatale girls for the main boys right away, but have already started to subvert that by giving the girls great personality and depth. So these girls appear to be becoming found family friendships instead. It's great and I hope the show continues to do this kind of thing.

Love Triangle vs Faen Fatal

The difference between a faen fatal and a love triangle is that the FF is introduced purely as a plot device to drive a wedge between the main couple with jealousy, and is rarely given depth of their own. (Lovely Writer's Aey is a good exception to this, he was given a lot more grace than normal, but that was kinda of LW's style and he was still basically dropped at the end.) While a love triangle treats both/all relationships as legitimately possible (by the narrative) for example Great Men Academy has a legit love triangle. So, to a certain extent, does Ossan's Love. I think Light On Me is going this direction too.

The Legends (2019) Full Review

My review of the first 30 episodes of the drama can be found here. 

This is more of a rant than a review. The drama should have wrapped up at episode 35. I was able to tolerate it up to episode 42 when the wedding was, but by episode 48 it’s a total mess. 

If only this scene was as epic as the picture makes it look. But alas, this was just a dream sequence, and by this point in the finale, I was already bored and scrolling through instagram on my phone. If only they really did have a love-hate relationship. But this is an angst-free drama. 

Inconsistent character arcs

The FL and ML have become incredibly weak, both in terms of abilities and personality. The changes just don’t make sense for their characters. 

Zhao yao is no longer the badass she once was, and I’m actually fine with that. Moving away from her demoness persona is part of her growth. BUT, she no longer has a goal in the drama (except when she finds out that Mo Qing has an inner demon. Then, her goal becomes finding a way to expel the demon). But in the last quarter of the drama, she doesn’t really do anything of importance. She lost her sword, but she doesn’t actively go and find it. Instead, Mo Qing and Jiang Wu are the ones who took initiative to hunt it down for her. And when Lin Zi Yu got away with it, she doesn’t bother thinking about finding her sword again?? I mean girl, you lost your sword. Your only weapon. Why is that not at the top of your list of priorities? Is this the same FL who had risked it all for the Wan Jun sword?

Her tolerance level for things that annoy her is just so out of character. Zhao yao used to be someone who always fought back against anything she didn’t like. But when it comes to Jiang Wu, she seems to have unlimited tolerance for him. Yes, he saved her, but owing him does not mean letting him be a menace. Like when Jiang Wu sucked the life energy out of Ah Dai. All she did was try to restrain Mo Qing from attacking Jiang Wu, but she didn’t spring forward to prevent Jiang Wu from killing Ah Dai. I mean, the cause of Mo Qing’s rage was Ah Dai dying. Shouldn’t you go address the root of the problem? Instead, she just sits and stares and lets Jiang Wu kill Ah Dai instead of doing something. And then there’s the scene in the library when she’s asleep, but Mo Qing is wrestling with his inner demon, and then the Wan Jun sword kills the 2 guards on duty. She just sleeps through the entire thing. Wasn’t she once the most feared conqueror/demoness? Isn’t she a warrior? How can your senses not be alert when there’s so much ruckus around you? Someone on MDL said that she became a glorified baby sitter for the ML, and while I don’t agree that it’s as extreme as that, I can see their point. All that Zhao yao does after the wedding is try to reign in Mo Qing to prevent him from going into full-on demon mode. She holds him back, tries to calm him and soothe him, rinse and repeat.

Speaking of Mo Qing, his current personality is just rage and jealousy. At first, it was kinda endearing seeing him jealous, but soon his entire arc was just about him being consumed by jealousy. The writers try to justify it by saying that he’s always had low self-esteem and been unconfident about himself because of his upbringing, and the growing demon energy inside him is exacerbating these thoughts, making him more unlike himself, but you’re telling me that everything that he and Zhao yao had gone through together was all for naught? This would have made sense 5 years ago, but we’ve seen that he has greatly matured since becoming sect leader. During the earlier episodes, he was able to see right through Zhao yao’s mask. He teased her, flirted with her, scolded her, and basically proved he’s her equal in every way, and he did it all with easy confidence. And now suddenly, all of that growth reverses, and he’s insecure and sensitive again. This character progression just doesn’t make sense in the context of everything that’s happened. I would have loved to have seen more of the introverted and unconfident Mo Qing at the beginning of the drama. But instead, we only got a handful of scenes before that part of his character arc was cut short and we skip ahead 5 years later and then another 5 years later to when he’s the sect leader. There was honestly no purpose for Mo Qing’s suffering. He just suffered for the sake of suffering. In other xianxia dramas, characters suffered for a purpose. It was a price they had to pay in order to protect someone they love. But this suffering is just pointless. It does nothing for this character arc. And they kept replaying the same montage of him sleeping on the dragon. As if it’s not already clear from the last 20 episodes that he’s being haunted by his father’s demon. 

Villains and supporting characters

I didn’t really care for the villains? Luo Mingxuan is still alive, but doesn’t do anything until the last 5 episodes. I eyeroll whenever Lin Zi Yu is onscreen. Jiang Wu is the only one who’s interesting and he serves as comedic relief.  

And then there are all the unnecessary deaths. It’s like they’re killing off all the good characters one by one. What was the point of killing off the doctor? He was the only character who could scold both Zhao yao and Mo Qing. The drama felt so empty without him. 

But on a good note, I really liked most of the supporting characters, from Zhiyan to Shi Qi to Ah Rong to Gu Hanguang. They were also the most consistent characters in the drama. 

On a bad note, the drama spent too much time on the backstories of supporting characters. I did not care to watch Suruo mourn Luo Mingxuan and remembering how they fell in love, and this happens for pretty much all the couples in the drama. It’s because Zhao yao and Mo Qing have a very simple romantic arc that’s resolved very early on, so the writers had to throw in fillers to drag out the drama. And the consequence is that our leads end up getting not enough screen time. 

The final 2 episodes

Oh boy. The last 2 episodes were a hot mess. In the final battle, everyone kept attacking and stabbing Luo Mingxuan, but he just won’t die?? He’s like Wolverine. He just comes back stronger. It just kept dragging on and on, and I completely lost interest. And I felt bad for Xu Kai. He was standing on the sidelines for most of the battle, just watching and shooting worried faces at Zhao yao. I hate to say he was useless, but it just felt like the writers did him dirty. Even Jiany Wu, who had already died by that point, was given a brief re-appearance. While Mo Qing, the ML, was forced to sit out on the action. 

I’m also so over the will-he-won’t-he be evil plot. I keep saying this but I’ll say it again. It. Just. Keeps. Dragging. I’ve watching longer dramas, but this one felt to go on forever. We get it. You’re being tortured by your inner demon, but love will conquer all. 

The editing is also weird? Some of the scenes aren’t in chronological order, and there’s no separation between dream sequences and reality. I also never liked the preview at the beginning of each episode. I also hate how they cut some crucial scenes from the TV version that’s on youtube, forcing me to hop onto doboku, which buffers. 

Honestly, the last episode felt like a hallucinated dream sequence. In one scene, they’re all sitting around the table saying that the need to seal the Wan Jun sword before Mo Qing gets out of the control, and then it suddenly cuts to black with a title card that says 5 years later (don’t get me started on how often they overuse the “5 years later” plot device. Why is it always exactly 5 years?) We then see that Zhiyan is now the sect leader, and we’re told that Mo Qing has sealed himself away, and Zhao yao has been waiting for him to return. We don’t see them say goodbye to Mo Qing before he seals himself away. No scene showing a handover to Zhiyan. We’re just forced to go with it and imagine these scenes ourselves. 

Zhao yao, with a new hairstyle and new clothes to signify the time skip, watches Zhi yan and the sect from the distance. She then goes to visit other people, like Sima Rong and Liu Cangling. Liu Cangling and Zhiyan are the only couple who were able to move on from each other, and honestly, good for them. We then see Zhao yao sitting in the cave, pouring wine onto the cave floor, and then it cuts to black again and a sword flies through the air and wedges itself on the bedrock and we hear Mo Qing say Zhao yao’s name in a voiceover. And then it cuts to a scene where they’re both in the cave wearing their clothes from 5 years and Zhao yao has her old hairstyle. You assume this is a flashback to when they sealed the sword. And then we see Mo Qing in another realm where he lowers the sword in to the water, presumably sealing it. And then it cuts to both of them on the street buying food, wearing their old clothes and hairstyles. 

Does this mean he got out of the seal? When in the timeline is this street scene? How did he get out of the seal? Did he just walk out? Was Zhao yao there waiting for him, or did he go and find her? It’s typical for there to be a long period of uncertain separation in xianxia and wuxia dramas, and these dramas usually end either ambiguously where you don’t know if the couple will reunite, or they end with an emotional reunion, like in Ashes of Love, Eternal Love, Love and Destiny, and Love and Redemption, and famously in Return of the Condor Heroes. But what in the world was this ending?? The hell happened? That was so anticlimactic. If the scene on the street really was their “reunion” after he got out of the seal, does that mean Zhao yao changed her hair back to 5 years ago? Why is the costuming so confusing then?

And the last scene where they have the same actors play their kids? Um, no. That’s just plain weird. You built up the chemistry between the 2 actors, and then in the end you make them play siblings and re-enact the scene of when their parents met? For what? To make the audience reminisce about the budding romance between the leads at the beginning so that things come full circle? But, these characters are siblings?? You’re trying to make us emotional over a scene of two siblings pretending to be lovers?

There was just no point in doing that. It doesn’t tell us anything about the characters’ married life now. I don’t care about their kids. I care about the characters and what they’re doing now. What a strange and uncomfortable way to end the drama. Not satisfying at all. 

It would have been better if they had left it ambiguous. The amount of times that Zhao yao came back from the dead showed that they can defy the impossible, so even if it was an ambiguous ending, you’d still be able to believe that they’ll be together again. But this mess just ruined the chemistry. Ugh. I really miss the first half of the drama. 

Overall Impression

I’m mad about how chaotic the last few episodes were. While the beginning of the drama wasn’t without its flaws either, it was still very promising and intriguing. The beginning of the drama felt like they knew where they were going with the story, even if you didn’t completely like the direction that it went. So yes, I echo the other critiques saying that this drama had a strong beginning and a weak end. 

When I got to episode 35, I thought, how bad can this get? When I got to episode 42, I was still holding out hope that maybe other people were just harsh and maybe I’ll actually enjoy it. But no, the final 10 episodes are really as bad as everyone says it is. 

The romance, which was the only reason I stuck to the drama, also felt a little underdeveloped. I wish we got to see more scenes of them pre-episode 30.They were so cute then. Everything post-episode 30 was just them being constantly worried about each other. 

At least there was no angst. And the comedy was great. So there’s that. 

I give this drama a 7/10 for the characters and the premise. The plot is not worth watching due to terrible editing, pacing, and consistency, but it’s also a drama that won’t take you long to watch since you could skip most of it anyway and just go to the scenes with the leads. It’s my first drama watching Bai Lu and Xu Kai, but I’m def now interested in more of their work, like Arsenal Military Academy.

The Family Business:

Logan Martin Richard Reed

Logan is 18 years old and just fresh out of high school. His father is Jensen Alexander Reed, a 3 time Oscar winning American actor and lead singer of rock band River Monster. His mother is Jane Charlotte Reed (nee Thomson), a Scottish psychologist and business woman who organises events for the rich and famous and sells items she’s crafted herself on Etsy as a hobby. His younger sister is Monica Louise Juliet Reed, a grade A high school student. They live in the countryside in Ayrshire, Scotland where his mother was born and raised. His father is semi-retired and happily living a peaceful life away from Hollywood. Logan has followed in his footsteps though and is a highly skilled musician in his own right, he has been accepted into Glasgow University to study music but isn’t sure whether he wants to go or not. Having the connections he has, his father and uncle being in a very successful band and his aunt being their manager, a degree in music isn’t essential but Jensen would prefer it if his son went to University as he never got that opportunity.

Logan recently toyed with the idea of forming his own band with his school friend Blaine Morton. Blaine’s older cousin, Nicolai Gunderson, has shown an interest in being a part of their band too along with Logan’s other school friend, Bonnie Tan and her younger sister Esther (who only wants to be in the band to get closer to Logan). Can “The Family Business” be as successful as River Monster? Has Logan got what it takes to emulate his mega famous dad and uncle?

Blaine Gunderson Morton

Blaine is 18 years old and has been good friends with Logan Reed since they started first year in high school. His mother is Swedish and his father is Scottish. His older cousin Nicolai Gunderson came to stay with them from Dalarna, Sweden two years ago on a gap year before attending University, but never went back home. Nicky’s father and Blaine’s mother are siblings. Blaine has also been accepted into Glasgow University to study engineering, but if Logan doesn’t go, he’s not sure he will either.

Blaine struggles with his appearance, having envied Logan for years, he feels the constant need to compete with his friend in order to get Esther Tan’s attention but she only has eyes for Logan. Blaine is excited to form a band as he enjoys playing the piano and singing. Can he get past his jealousy of his best friend in order to make this band work?

Nicolai Lucas Gunderson

Nicolai is twenty years old and goes by Nicky. His parents are both Swedish and live in the county of Dalarna. Nicky travelled to Scotland to stay with his aunt and uncle two years ago and never left, missing his chance to study medicine at Dalarna University College. He never wanted to be a doctor like his father, that was a dream his parents had concocted for him. Nicky’s dream is to be famous so when he hears about his younger cousin Blaine’s chance to form a band with the son of a global superstar, Nicky jumps on the bandwagon. Having played the violin and the guitar since he was a child, Nicky enjoys music and feels he would contribute greatly to his cousin’s band. Like his cousin, he also enjoys singing and is very good at it too.

Nicky likes Bonnie Tan, an old school friend of Blaine and Logan’s who is coming on board to play the drums for this new band. However, Nicky has to deal with Logan’s younger sister Monica who has developed a crush on him and won’t leave him alone. Will the school friends let Nicky into their band? Will Bonnie finally fall for his baby blue eyes and the accent? Probably not, she’s not into men!

Bonnie Colleen Tan

Bonnie is 19 years old and has been neighbours with the Reed family for over a decade ever since her family moved over to Scotland from Kilkenny in Southern Ireland. Born to a Chinese father and an Irish mother, Bonnie has a younger sister called Esther who follows her around like a bad smell. Bonnie is in her first year at Strathclyde University studying Psychology which she pesters Logan’s mother about on a daily basis as Mrs Reed is a trained Cognitive Behavioural Psychologist. Bonnie considers Logan her best friend and Blaine an inconvenience who she tolerates for Logan’s sake. Nicky Gunderson on the other hand is a pain in her backside, she has no interest in him whatsoever as he is most definitely not her type! In fact none of the boys are!

Bonnie can play the drums, the piano and the flute. She is very keen to be involved in Logan and Blaine’s band but her parents will only allow her to be a part of it if Esther can join too. Will Logan accept Bonnie’s sister into the band knowing that Esther fancies him? Can Bonnie juggle her degree and being in a band?

Esther Andrea Tan

Esther is 17 years old and in her sixth year of high school. She is Bonnie’s younger sister and idolises her. Essie is madly in love with Logan Reed, the son of Jensen Reed who she had a poster of on her wall when she was younger. Seeing Logan every day, watching him from across the street becoming more of a man as time goes on, Essie has it bad. When her sister is recruited to join the band he is forming, she has a tantrum in front of her parents so that Bonnie is forced to let her join too or she won’t be allowed to. Essie can only play three chords on the guitar but she can whack that triangle in music class with panache! She has no intentions of going to University, rather attending a beauty course to become a nail technician. Esther isn’t one for academia, she picked the beauty course because she thinks it will be easy.

Will Logan ever look her way? Will the others allow her to join their band in order to hold onto Bonnie? Will she jump on the crazy train and learn a fourth guitar chord just for Logan?

Monica Louise Juliet Reed

Monica is 15 years old and the baby sister of Logan. She believes that she is far more grown up than her 15 years and demands that everyone take her seriously. She is currently studying for her standard grades and is an A grade student. Although her older brother is also academically successful, Monica has always been the brainy one of the two. Having been sheltered all of her life by her overprotective father, Monica tends to rebel against his strict parenting and everything he tries to avoid, she embraces head on. Monica and Logan have a close bond even though there is a three year age gap between them, she has always adored her big brother. Her dream is to become a fashion designer or a makeup artist like her Aunt Eliza, she really isn’t sure what she wants yet. The only thing she is sure of is her love for Nicolai Gunderson, her crush totally embarrasses her brother as Nicky is five years older than her. In fact Nicky calls her jailbait behind her back and has no interest in her whatsoever.

A surprising turn of events sees Monica joining the band her brother is trying to form. She is a talented guitarist and piano player and she has the singing voice of an angel. Will Monica be the star turn in Logan’s band? Will she ever get over Nicky? Will she ever stop embarrassing big bro?
