ok so!!! i use firealpaca which is just my usual drawing program. so i'll keep using it as a reference for my steps but of course im sure whatever similar program u use should have similar features

FINDING YOUR SCREENSHOTS

the key to decent td edits is to flat out trace screenshots whenever possible. stock pics will do, but of course itll be a lot more fun and less obvious if u use a screenshot from the show and put it into your new context

in terms of making your ocs, you will likely have to do what someone once called "frankensteining" your pics. this is where you use pics of other characters for their specific features and put them together since your oc doesnt have official screenshots to trace. this also absolutely comes in handy w canon characters! maybe you have a pose but u need them to be sitting. so try to stitch together two different pics to get what u need

it will look very scary but just trust the process. here is a random example i made using a dawn screenshot (where i removed the background), gwens eyes and eyebrows, and kittys hair

the sketching part is semi-optional. if you think you can freehand the lineart then go ahead but i assume your oc wont be a complete copy of something found in canon and therefore you will have to draw the newer/different features (such as the hair or the outfit) at least a little bit. and sometimes when i frankenstein the pics, my brain gets all overwhelmed so sketching makes me feel better jfbdjdnd

(in terms of my own oc, i screwed myself over bc his body type is so unique i gotta freehand it like all the time 😭

you can see i traced his head from his render (ALWAYS DO THIS BTW!!! TRACE CONSTANTLY), but then the body was freehanded using a canon pic as reference because tracing the pic wouldve been inaccurate)

THE LINEART

yes the iconic td thick, sharp, flat lineart. i achieve this by using a normal pen tool, turning off the pen pressure, and then turning up my pen stability to 40-60 (very high). you could use a curve tool if that works for you! but i would suggest against that for ALL of it bc the tool just wont respond well to rly drastic curves and such

the pen size varies on the pic. if the characters are close-up, itll likely be a bigger one. and then the characters' little details and facial features are usually a slightly but definitely noticeable smaller size. for the most part, ive had the bigger pen size at 13 while the details are around 9. or big size 10 and smaller size 7.

heres my technique:

as u can see, all of my lines go a bit too far. this is so that when im done drawing them, i can go back in and slowly erase where they meet and get them all sharp and pointy. this is just how i personally do it lmao. when it comes to facial features and other stuff that doesnt connect to anything, just get a close look at your reference to see how thick or how thin the edges get and do ur best to erase the edges to the point where they should be

THE COLORING

not much to it! the bucket tool is the best way to go. again just get a good look at your references just in case any parts have the lineart also colored in

THE BACKGROUND

you can find some generic td background pics on google or u could get them from the show and try to erase any character in the way lmao. if ur recreating something like, say, a dunc/ney scene w a different ship, then its very tedious but youll have to do your best to erase the canon characters and piece the background back together.

i like using the smudge tool a lot for this!!! just kinda pulling whats already there towards the characters. to save time, put your drawing visible on a top layer as you do this so that you dont have to edit the ENTIRE background, just what you need

THE RENDERING

ok so heres a big one imo. after youre done, youre gonna have to fuck up the quality at least a little. well not that u HAVE to but like..... to match the standard quality of a td screenshot? ive never seen a td screenshot in perfect hd quality outside of stock art. so u could blur ur drawing just a little bit. maybe add in the teeniest bit of chromatic aberration (just set it to 1 or -1). not ALL of them together but u do whatever u gotta do

my personal favorite is blurring just a little and then saving it as a jpeg (around 65-80%) so that its pretty crunchy and looks all the more real

obviously not a NECESSARY step but just something to point out. especially if ur background isnt the best quality so the characters have to match it

this one from yesterday i didnt even redraw topher bc i was lazy and he looks fine enough. i just put danny onto the pic to cover the other character. so i blurred danny a little bit and then saved it in a pretty low quality so that they match one another. look at those pixels. that crunch.

SO THE TLDR IS just trace and copy your references as close as possible. if you cant find a reference for your character, try finding another character w something close enough

seeing as ive already given my opinions on the entire mario timeline, i may as well do sonic. no, it will not be as in depth. why? because oh my god have you ever tried piecing together the sonic timeline??? dont.

basically, i believe most alternate universes to be canon. and by the way, if its an au i havent enjoyed, im not counting it lmao.

classic games!!!

i like the generations version of things, where the classic games are when they're all younger. i'd say sonic's probably about 12, tails 5, knuckles 13 and amy 11. robotnik can be about mid to late 30s at this point and i cant be bothered with any other characters lmao

and before someone goes 'bit odd that sonic's eye colour changed lmao' ik but like it reminds me of my brother. he had the same colour eyes as me when he was a baby (really dark brown) but now his eyes are hazel (or, as my dad calls it, 'autumn'). i also like how the only reason they specifically chose green was for green hill zone. i think that's really sweet.

i also like to think the OK KO crossover happened about here, if not, very early on in the modern games. maybe sonic underground??? actually, no, i dont think sonic underground could be canon.

modern games!!!

the modern games happen in the order that they happen in. dont ask me about the weird bit. actually, just dont ask at all - nobody knows what to do with this bit. im also counting the idw comics as modern games seeing as they're apparently canon now? yeah idk either.

as for fleetway, archie and any other comics i cant think of, i havent read them, i dont know.

for the ages, generally, sonic's 15, tails 8, all canon ages, yada yada EXCEPT for amy. i dont like amy being 12, so in my head she is 14. i dont even ship sonamy, just the entire thing of her being 12 when sonic is 15 and those two being probably the most canon sonic ship out there that isn't technically canon (STOBOTNIK DOES NOT COUNT JUST IN CASE IN THE FUTURE ITS EVEN MORE EXPLICIT) really makes me feel grossed out.

oh yeah and seeing as he doesnt have a canon age, robotnik is vaguely 40.

post-timeline stuff!!!

this is mostly where actual theory comes into play, because before this point its like, yeah? we knew that? i get that sonic boom is an alternate universe, but i... i like sonic boom. i like it a lot. so it's canon in my eyes. tbf they do all look and act much older, so i'd imagine boom is a future where they're all adults. as of posting this, sticks has only just been made canon, with that mention in frontiers, so if she really does end up in any mainline games, they just happen before this. probably. i dunno, maybe they'll ruin this entire portion.

i think that robotnik is probably late 40s, early 50s by this point, and tbf i think the main cast overall is only rough suggestions, because i could imagine sonic boom happening over the course of a few years. sonic is probably about 19-25, knuckles 19-26, amy 17-24, tails 11-15, and im pretty sure sticks is about knuckles' age canonically? so we'll say she's 19-25.

i get that shadow is 50 and whatnot, probably about 55-60 at this point, but i generally think he's like, a few months older than sonic if we're going based on why we count age (experience and stuff), so probably 19-26, like knuckles.

this is where i think most crossovers take place: mario & sonic, all the weird sega sports games from the late 2000s to mid 2010s (im looking at you, sega all stars tennis/sonic and sega all stars racing (but specifically for the wii (because thats the best version))), stuff like that. with the mario timeline, i said most crossovers aren't canon, but with sonic, anything is possible! because of that, the only crossover than comes to mind that definitely wouldn't be canon is smash, and thats because smash is canonically a kid playing with their toys.

No need to apologize! The Last Emperor has a lot of court dress costumes and I need to research most of them so it will be in a separate post.

Jasmine Women (2004) 茉莉花开

Jasmine Women is a 2004 Chinese film directed and co-written by Hou Yong in his directorial debut. The film is an adaptation of Su Tong's novel Women's Life (妇女生活) and depicts the emotionally troubled lives of 4 generations of Shanghainese women from the 1930s to the 1980s. (copy and pasted from Wikipedia) The costume designer is Shirley Chan. This movie is very special in that in the generation where the female character is a daughter, she is played by Zhang Ziyi, but when she becomes a mother, she is played by Joan Chen and then her daughter is played by Zhang Ziyi again... Interesting indeed. I watched the whole thing on Youtube and the screenshots are from there.

So this is the first daughter we’re introduced to, Mo played by Zhang Ziyi. It’s set in the 1930s although it didn’t specify which year which is kind of important, since fashion in every part of the 1930s looked very different. Mo is a young girl who dreams of becoming an actress and her look is quite appropriate for her age, although the hair is extremely confusing. I have never seen a single young girl from the 1930s who sports this hairstyle, however it would be a thing in the early 2000s when this movie was made. She wears black heeled Mary Janes with white socks, which was appropriate footwear for young girls. She also wears a knit cardigan over a blouse with a Peter Pan collar, acceptable in the 30s for a young girl. The skirt is obviously modern and not made with a vintage pattern, it should be tighter for the early 30s or shorter for the late 1930s. 

Later when Mo goes to the cinema they showed a clip of a movie from the time. She was potentially trying to emulate this hairstyle, but this looks way different?? The hair at the sides is not pulled back and the ends are visibly curled...

And then we are introduced to her mother. This look made me sustain psychic damage. The binding at the neck area is nowhere to be found, and the 大襟 dajin (front closure) looks suspiciously curved for the 1930s; curved dajin was more of a 1950s and 60s thing, a 1930s dajin would have a bit of angle. I do commend the two rows of plain binding and three buttons at the collar, as well as the fabric. Her hair is probably once again a pathetic attempt at a fingerwave but it just looks flat and mediocre.

Again, there is a perfectly made early 30s cheongsam with neck binding from the same old movie clip they showed yet the costume designer decided she didn’t see that. This isn’t an issue with knowledge or experience anymore, but eyesight.

The neck binding disappeared 2: electric boogaloo. Such a waste of this great Deco fabric.

She gets a makeover for the shooting. I swear I’ve seen this look on some 1940s actress though I can’t remember. Here the cheongsam and hairstyles worn by Mo and her co star jumped to late 1930s styles. The low collar and giant pankou are a staple of late 1930s cheongsam, so is the hair with the ringlets. Maybe this was set in the late 1930s all along, but Mo’s mother wears an early 30s style cheongsam because she’s more conservative? If that were the case the costuming is quite thoughtful, though I highly doubt that was intentional.

This look is where the psychic damage really hits. They were probably trying to do a 40s messy hair/poodles at the top of the head impression but she’s so obviously wearing an extension it looks like a bird’s nest placed on top of Zhang’s otherwise perfectly smooth head. The hair at the back is also straight, which is not ok. The cheongsam here is confusing as hell, it has the early 30s high collar with three buttons but uses 1950s darts and no neck binding. The fabric is not accurate or flattering at all, shiny beaded fabrics were rarely used even for evening cheongsam before the 1950s, I don’t understand why costume designers are so dead set on them.

In this scene, from the front Mo’s mother has a very standard 1940s victory roll (rolled toward the back), which is great. Even then it shouldn’t be worn with clothing from the 1930s. The fabric choice is awesome, but the lack of neck binding threatens to beak the suspension of disbelief.

They photoshopped Mo into a cover of The Young Companion I’m wheezing. This cheongsam is solid for the late 1930s but the hair is more 1940s. I love how this becomes a recurring prop of significance because it symbolizes the glamor of the republican era and Mo’s determination to help her children avoid her mistakes, but also how the glamor was just an illusion and an attainable dream for Mo.

And then this scene, I... This looks straight out 1960s. Mo’s hair is nowhere near the 1930s and the cheongsam exposing the shoulders did not become a thing until the 1970s/80s. If you zoom in on her hair, you can see they tried to do a victory roll again but the piece of straight hair at the front doesn’t want to cooperate. The Western evening dresses worn by the other guests also come nowhere near the 1930s. I can only describe the ensuing scene where they dance as 群魔乱舞, costuming wise.

I love that they put her in ringlets which were very popular in the late 30s and early 40s, but the straight side part at the front is just 2000s.

I’m not sure which 40′s hairstyle they were attempting in this scene, maybe a pageboy curl or just brush out curls pinned to the sides. The back is passable but the straight front is again not ok.

This hair is much better, I also like that she switched to aoku because of pregnancy. The neck binding is still not there though.

Her mother’s look here is perfect. She has the ringlets, the cheongsam and the modified 马褂 magua really popular in the 30s.

What the fuck is this? They’re wearing stilettoes? Those weren’t a thing until the 1950s either. And cheongsam with high slits should’ve disappeared by the late 30s. This is like, the stereotypical image people have of women who wear cheongsam in the 21st century, and it’s nowhere near historically accurate.

Phew we’re finally finished with the 1930s part. Now we move on to the next generation which is set in the 1950s.

We are introduced to Mo’s now teenage daughter, Li, again played by Zhang Ziyi. She wears a plaid shirt with a cardigan, which was ok for a 1950s schoolgirl. Her hair is tied into this braided circle which wasn’t very common; most girls with long hair would just have it in a braid. Those with shorter hair would leave it straight or pin curl it into a pageboy style.

The other students from her high school. I like the use of flannel and plaid fabrics, they were quite common in the 1950s. A high school girl wouldn’t really be wearing a skirt above the knee because those were reserved for younger children. The fit of the clothes don’t look 1950s enough though, more early 2000s. 1950s clothes would also be more colorful and floral patterns would be featured a lot more, I’m not sure how widespread pastel wardrobes were.

There is a cute sequence where she goes out with his guy from her school. The clothes have the right idea but could use more 1950s sewing techniques. Like, the pinafore dress would be perfect if the sleeves were shorter and more puffed.

This is where it gets funny. The now aged Mo, played by Joan Chen, wears the same cheongsam from the 1930s. Lady, it’s been 18 years, did you not get a single new item of clothing this entire time? Older women (usually housewives) in the 1950s would wear either a 40s style short cheongsam with a relaxed cut for everyday activities or a 50s Hong Kong style cheongsam with an hourglass fit for special occasions. 1930s cheongsam would be in museums. Funnily enough, because the 1930s cheongsam in this movie are incorrectly made with darts, a curved dajin and no neck binding, they would function well as 50s style cheongsam if they removed two or all of the buttons from the collar and shortened the hem a bit.

This is much better :D it’s almost like the costumer designer was remotely hearing my complaints and then speed fixing the costumes before the next scene lol.

I think the reason why the costumer put her in the same style of dress is to show that her mindset was still very republican era and bourgeois, as seen in her later confrontation with her daughter’s boyfriend, who was a devoted communist. This theme is reinforced in a shot in a later scene where Mo is sitting next to her record player in a cheongsam juxtaposed with a giant poster of Lenin outside. Normally I would object to this kind of characterization using stereotypes (women in cheongsam could do communism just as well) but it’s a genius shot so I’ll let it pass.

Also, the wearing of cheongsam and the possession of a record player weren’t yet considered super bourgeois and criminal in the 1950s since a lot of people were still quite posh in that decade.

In the wedding scene, the guy is wearing a Zhongshan/Mao suit, which was appropriate wedding attire in the 1950s, and looks pretty good. I think Li is trying to go for a 裙褂 qungua experience? This jacket and skirt combo was popularized at the end of the 19th century as a wedding outfit, but the jacket should be black while the skirt was red. The embroidery would also usually be either symmetrical, vertical florals or 八团 batuan (eight roundels) patterns with 海水江崖 haishuijiangya (waves and cliffs) trim because it was inspired by Qing Dynasty women’s court dress 吉服 jifu. Ok this sentence contains a lot of complicated information you can read all about it in this article. The robe featured in this scene screams 2000s Cantonese wedding and not 1950s, like what is that embroidery it looks like maggots. Qungua was still pretty commonly worn to weddings in the 1950s and 60s, though it became fashionable to attend your wedding in uniforms to show your devotion to the communist cause, thus the popularity of qungua waned. With this said, it’s still fairly easy to find photos from 1950s mainland where the couple wears Western suits and white gowns, especially for people from big cities; the unanimity of wearing uniforms to your wedding is kind of a modern stereotype (and more of a 1960s and 70s thing).

Qungua worn by Hong Kong actress Li Lihua from around the same time. The embroidery here are symmetrical florals. The thing with vintage qungua is that you can usually still see a fair chunk of the black fabric underneath, in comparison to a lot of modern versions which are decked entirely in gold embroidery.

I love the sleeve protector things this guy’s mom (ALSO played by Joan Chen) wears, reminds me of my nanny when I was a child.

(This is Mo btw) Now THIS is a great 1950s look. The cheongsam with the relaxed 40s cut and plain fabric (still missing neck binding though), the pulled back curl hairstyle with a side part which was popular in the 40s in the West but stayed fashionable in China into the 50s, this is the image in my mind when I think of a 1950s mainland housewife.

A lot of non cheongsam outfits from the 1950s part are actually pretty good! Mostly because 1950s clothes look very similar to certain things we’d wear today e.g. suits, blouses, dress pants etc.. Because Western fashion didn’t spread to China very fast in the first half of the 20th century, the 1940s silhouette with rectangular shoulders remained popular in China until the very end of the 1950s. Suits and blouses with a smooth, rounded shoulder coexisted with puffy sleeves and shoulder pads that widened the shoulders. Li’s hair here with the small row of curls is great and very 50s.

That ends the part set in the 1950s. The next part in set in the 1980s and I don’t know anything about 1980s fashion so I won’t comment on it, to me it looks convincing enough not to break the suspension of disbelief? It did deliver the 1980s vibes. 

Overall, the costuming in this movie has some really good moments but also some really bad ones. There are a couple recurring mistakes such as the missing neck binding for 30s cheongsam and straight hair where it doesn’t belong, and the costumes fluctuate between years of a certain decade. Not to mention that a lot of looks read more as 2000s than anything period. The makeup also doesn’t look remotely period accurate, even for when Mo was an actress and she was supposed to be fashionable and fabulous. Zhang Ziyi doesn’t have a very historical face but for some reasons makeup artists for period dramas looooove to give her the no makeup look to further accentuate her non period features... Had you given her some plucked brows, pink blush and red heart shaped lips, she would look exactly like a 30s diva----anybody would. With that said, I do like the occasional representation of some historical looks that are difficult to find elsewhere, such as the ringlets hairstyle, victory rolls, 30s magua and the sleeve protectors. A lot of fabrics used for the costumes are also amazing, especially the ones used for the cheongsam worn by Mo’s mother. I’d rate the costuming in this movie a 4/10; it might not be a high rating because of the many technical problems with accuracy, but the variety and diversity of costuming in this movie is insane. I love that the costume designer tried out some rare looks, albeit with questionable success. It was a very interesting experience analyzing the costumes in this movie.

Costuming aside, this is a really good movie. The concept of using recurring actresses to deliver the theme of mother-daughter relationship definitely paid off and the plot is super moving. I would recommend this movie.

Dangerous Liaisons 2012 危险关系

*not to be confused with the 1988 American film starring Glenn Close, though that one is infinitely better in costuming.

Dangerous Liaisons (Chinese: 危險關係) is a 2012 Chinese film by Hur Jin-ho loosely based on the 1782 novel with the same title by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. The novel has been adapted numerous times, including Les Liaisons dangereuses, an adaptation by Roger Vadim (1959), the eponymous Hollywood film (1988), Valmont (1989), Cruel Intentions (1999), and Untold Scandal from South Korea (2003).

Ok let’s do an interactive thing: please pick out the inaccuracies in the costuming by yourselves here in the notes. I don’t want to say another word about the costuming in this movie because 1) it’s not a particularly interesting movie 2) there is nothing special in its costuming, it makes literally the same mistakes every other movie makes. I hope this will be in order. I’m getting really tired of these same old tacky tasteless fake 1930s looks that parade themselves about as if they were “republican era glamor”. I have seen many a movie with shit costuming and this is just one of many. If I consume the costuming in this movie I will become a disciple of 老八, or Divine.

What the fuck is this? Is it too late to join Kars in space? It take less than 30 seconds to look up 30s lingerie online and the costume designer decided to not do that.

Out of the bat 2/10, one point for not putting the actresses in low rise jeans and another for the lack of farthingales. After today whenever I see a movie with costuming like this again it’s an automatic 2/10. Next.

The Crossing 2014 太平轮

The Crossing (Chinese: 太平轮) is a two-part 2014 Chinese-Hong Kong epic historical romance-war drama (part 1) and disaster film (part 2) directed by John Woo and written by Hui-Ling Wang. The film stars Zhang Ziyi, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Song Hye-kyo, Huang Xiaoming, Tong Dawei and Masami Nagasawa. The film is based on the sinking of the steamer "Taiping" in 1949. The incident led to the deaths of over 1,500 passengers and crew. The film's first part was released in China on December 2, 2014. Part two was released on July 30, 2015. (copy and pasted from Wikipedia) The costume designer is Tongxun Chen. I’m not the most well versed on late 40s fashion so I’ll give fewer opinions.

This? 1949? Pfft.

Ok this is actually not that bad. The victory rolls are very 1940s appropriate, the cheongsam has the low collar, huge button and neck binding which is great, and the evening gown and hairstyles on the lady on the right look good as well.

The sleeve length for the cheongsam is correct and satisfying, the Western evening dresses have a sufficiently 40s silhouette too. The people with the straight hair front look questionable though.

These shoes get a lot of screen time but they’re not 1940s at all. They also have red soles like Louboutins for some reason?? Those didn’t become a thing until the 1990s I believe.

This might be the first time I’ve seen riding habit representation in republican era dramas? I commend the spirit, but this outfit is way too frilly and not robust enough for riding. In the 1940s horse riding wasn’t so common anymore but when women did ride horses they usually wore jodhpurs not tight pants (which she is wearing in this scene, I wasn’t able to screenshot it). The shirt and suit would also be practical and made of a coarser fabric like flannel or tweed. I do like her hair though finally it actually looks like the 1940s.

The wedding dress is good! White floor length gowns with a train and puffy sleeves are very appropriate for the 1940s. Although in the West people are moving on to New Look hourglass dresses, fashion stayed behind in the China in these years so the earlier 40s look was still in vogue. The unstructured silhouette of 40s evening dresses is represented very well (though that could just be a coincidence, maybe the designer bought a generic “Western” looking wedding dress and called it a day).

1940s wedding dress sewing pattern.

I’m very confused by the outfit of the female protagonist?? It resembles a 1940s cheongsam in shape but she pairs it with white stockings? In the 1940s, shiny seamed nude stockings were the norm. The slits are also too high, 40s cheongsam were much looser in cut and didn’t require high slits for ease of movement.

From the back it could be seen that her hair is waved then tied into a pony tail?? I’m more confused. They didn’t stop at the early 30s fingerwave at the front huh.

This looks ok, the collar shape is appropriate for the late 40s and I love how they actually styled the actress’ hair instead of using extensions, keeping the forehead empty and neat. Apparently this tall cheongsam collar with rectangular edges and one button was popular in the late 40s before moving into the 50s collar shape with the tapered edges, you could see a similar style in 小城之春 Spring in a Small Town, an iconic movie from 1948.

This cheongsam is ok. The fit should be looser though, so the slit would be shorter.

This hair is also pretty neat.

This hair is very interesting, it’s probably trying to go for a pompadour front moment though it’s sagging too much for that. A pompadour front should go upward away from the face and so should victory rolls.

And then we’re dragged back to stereotype land. The cheongsam collar on the left looks 1930s and the hair is way too big to be realistic.

Now this is a great brush out curl hairstyle. The front has volume and “stands up”, much better than the flat circles created by extensions. Not late 1940s though.

I know as much about 1940s Japanese fashion as the next Karen but I’m very sure this wasn’t a valid hairstyle.

I have to admit it’s becoming very difficult for me to judge the historical accuracy of many republican era films and dramas because I genuinely feel like the costume designers gave zero fucks about actually recreating the specific year or even decade. There are some looks stereotypical to “the republican era” that will be present in most dramas set in the republican era regardless of what decade it is, such as over the top fingerwave extensions or big fake curls, cheongsam in gaudy, colorful fabrics that never existed in the first half of the 20th century, various vaguely vintage looking Western garments that aren’t actually recreated based on period Western silhouettes or construction methods etc.. I can’t even expect the designers to give the smallest fuck about silhouette, let alone fabrics, details and accessories. Whenever I try to pick out historically accurate things from movies like that I feel as though I’m reading too much into them and it’s just pure coincidence that one or two looks the designer picked from the stereotypical “republican era” repertoire turn out to be accurate. This movie very much gives me that vibe, so I won’t say more. Overall there is not really anything that stands out from or more thoughtful than other republican era movies, and it’s clear that the designers weren’t aiming for a super 1940s look to begin with. I’d rate the costuming here 4/10.

You will see that the 1940s has a very distinct look different to all other decades in the republican era (tbh all of them are different but costume designers don’t care). There are plenty more available on Youtube if you look them up :)) I hope this was at least somewhat interesting, see you next time when I review the epic costumes in The Last Emperor. Thoughts on what might happen for the rest of S4 for chenford?

ok i'm rusty on my spec muscles because it's been awhile since i've last done it (rip ellick) BUT i'll give it a shot.

disclaimer: this is the first season of the rookie i'm watching live & even then i started a few episodes in so i'm not totally used to their "way" of doing things!

so in just half a season we've seen a significant dynamic shift in chenford. i know it's been said before but they really seem to be laying the foundation of friends instead of partners. and frankly the subtle glances, body language shifts, small comments are changing too & i've enjoyed the intentionality behind it.

in the back half of the season i'd essentially expect more of the same. procedurals are typically 60-70% case work and the remaining 30-40% background plot divided between everyone's storylines (with the main character getting typically more of that share of the pie). also those percentages are my personal perception after watching procedurals for just under two decades, definitely not definitive/cite-worthy by any means. but all that to say, in order to meaningfully get from point A to point B in a 22 episode season (we've got to remember this isn't a streaming show!! we have double the amount of episodes most new shows have, we don't have to rush things! there's time for filler episodes and slower plotlines, which is a good thing!!) it's going to take multiple seasons to actually get together and have "real" progress.

since you didn't ask, lets break it down math-wise. we'll be generous and say there's 40% of the script that's dedicated to background plot. we'll say we have approximately 6 side characters (lucy, tim, nyla, angela/wesley, bailey, and wade & aaron as half side characters each) and our 1 main character who gets a larger weight of the background plot. we'll say nolan gets about 10% of the background plot (which feels conservative, but i digress), leaving 5% for every other side character. that's 5% of progress per episode for lucy & tim to count towards individual storylines AND the chenford agenda. that's. not. much!! it wouldn't make sense if they suddenly jumped to being together with such little potential progress each episode. yeah there's a good amount the show can ask us to infer and interpret but there's a limit to that too.

so tl;dr i see ending of s4 chenford being close friends. i see us understanding more of how they act as each other's support network & have become the other's "go-to" so to speak. i see bigger hints of one or both (my bets are on tim) realizing there may be something brewing that's deeper than just close friends. outright displays of affection or jealousy- eh, not sure, not yet at least maybe near the end end of the season. but lmao this became long despite me saying i'm out of spec practice 🤡🤡 whoops

hi! so i’ve been reading up on chinese history and mostly going down wikipedia rabbit holes but i came across your posts about qing dynasty hairstyles. just curious, where did you actually find these information? do you have any tips on researching more niche topics like this? i’m having a hard time with it and i’m not able to find solid info with references or are credible :/ maybe my chinese isn’t that good but I find that searching questions in chinese also doesn’t yield a lot of results. Honestly the information on the Qing hairstyles posts I’ve been gathering and holding on for so long and it’s all gathered in bits and pieces so I can’t really list individual sources anymore. It’s hard for me to talk about my process of researching information because 1) it’s totally chaotic and 2) it’s usually not born out of like an inherently academic interest but a more practical need. I write Huan Zhu Ge Ge fanfiction, so everything I have ever looked up about the Qing dynasty is because I needed to know these things to write my fics.

I’m not even sure if any tip for searching for information in Chinese I can give is going to be useful for anyone, mostly because the method is very specific to me as a Vietnamese person.  

(tl;dr: use Chinese search engines and search using Chinese characters not pinyin.)

Other than just cultural osmosis from dramas, most of my research for my fanfics come from these sources:

1. Wikipedia

I usually start with English Wikipedia mostly because I’m a third culture bilingual whose default internet language is English, but for topics on Chinese culture and history, Vietnamese Wikipedia can sometimes have full Wiki articles when the English version are just short stubs. If failing that, I sometimes wander into Chinese Wikipedia, but I don’t find Chinese-language Wikipedia articles are as helpful as the Chinese equivalent, Baidu Baike. More on that later.

2. Google searches

Sometimes, you do get some information from cultural blogs/tourism blogs/websites that tell you things about Chinese culture/history in general just through history search but as you can already tell, they tend to be very general.

3. Information already translated into Vietnamese by other people

So this is where in recent years the popularity of dramas such as Zhen Huan and Ruyi come in useful. There are Facebook groups for fans of these dramas where the people running the fan pages do know Chinese and they have translated a lot of information on Qing clothes, customs and historical records into Vietnamese. A lot of our series of posts on Qing dynasty costumes are retranslated from these Vietnamese sources. For the Qing dynasty costumes posts on this blog, I did do a cursory “reverse engineering”? fact check by putting the names of the different clothing articles etc. through Baidu Baike and running through Google-translated versions of those Baike articles, and if they more or less match what the Vietnamese translations were saying, I’m taking them as probably at least somewhat credible/not totally made up.  

(This is why you shouldn’t take everything we say on this blog as irrefutable.)

4. Baidu search engine, Baike and other Chinese sources

Ok, so the thing you need to know about me is that:

I’m Vietnamese

Since the mid-2000s, I have only ever watched Chinese dramas subtitled in Vietnamese (as opposed to dubbed). Watching subbed dramas helps a lot with listening comprehension but also recognition of common Chinese characters because all Chinese dramas come with Chinese subs as well. This does mean that while I can’t speak or write Chinese, I now can watch raw dramas and understand maybe about 40%? depending on how familiar I am with the tropes in the drama.  

In my bored uni days I used to moderate a forum on Chinese dramas, which required, among other things, searching for and translating Chinese entertainment news.

All this means is that over the years, I have developed certain tricks to search for information in Chinese as a Vietnamese person.

Firstly, it is always much easier to search things on the internet using Chinese characters instead of pinyin, which is usually pretty useless when conveying actual information because Chinese is full of homophones. I can’t actually type Chinese, but the thing about smartphone Chinese pinyin keyboards and Chinese search engines such as Baidu is that if you type in pinyin, it will auto-suggest Chinese characters for you. Of course you then need to be familiar with pinyin and able to read some Chinese characters to know that you’re searching for the right thing. This is where my years of watching Chinese dramas with subtitles come in as it means sometimes I can guess the pinyin by listening to the spoken Chinese and use that to search things and/or recognise the corresponding Chinese characters.

(When you see us use Chinese characters on this blog, I’ve basically just opened Baidu, typed in the pinyin in order to copy the Chinese characters. Yes it’s a whole process.)

The search engine Baidu pretty much works as Google does, and if you search a term, of the first things it will give you is the Baike page for that thing. Baike is probably about as reliable as Wikipedia on non-sensitive topics that would not be subject to censorship, which is good enough usually.

Baike is obviously in Chinese, so to understand that, I would Google translate it into either English or Vietnamese. These days, Google translate is surprisingly okay when translating Chinese-English that if I’m not too invested in the topic, I can make do with just getting the general idea through the Google English translation. However, if Chinese-English fails, and I translate it into Vietnamese. Google is usually better at translating Chinese-Vietnamese as Vietnamese does have Chinese roots and shares syntax and grammatical structures.

Sometimes, when Google doesn’t give me the information I need, I will also put bits of the text that Google can’t make sense of into a Han-Viet converter. Without going into the historical relationship between Vietnamese and literary written Chinese, what this essentially does is convert the Chinese text into Han-Viet words, which is the Vietnamese equivalent of probably Shakespeare English? or maybe Middle English. These Han Viet words are now also written in the modern Vietnamese roman alphabet, which means I can now read the words, and understand maybe 50-60% of it, as vocab used in modern formal written Vietnamese still borrows significantly from Chinese words/have Chinese roots. Han-Viet converters online also come with a dictionary, so the bits I don’t understand I can look up the Chinese characters and understand the information that way.  

Reading whole articles in Han-Viet is a pain in the ass and I would never do that, but bits of converted Han-Viet combined with Google translate usually gives me a pretty good understanding of simple Chinese text like Baike articles. 

Keywords

In terms of keywords, it can sometimes be tricky if you don’t already have a term that you’re searching specifically. If you have a more general question then I guess in that case you would either have to know some rudimentary Chinese to search on Chinese search engines, or resort to searching in English. But if you can form questions in Chinese, I would suggest using Baidu for your searches, instead of Google. 

Navigating Chinese internet as a person who doesn’t speak Chinese can be very daunting and I guess...it just takes time to get used to? I’m not sure if I have any advice other than that, to be honest. -h

Teen Wolf : 1x01 “Wolf Moon”

OMG they look so young! This whole episode has made me feel so old, I can’t believe that it’s been 9 years since this aired. I still remember watching this after middle school and now, it’s been almost a decade, I’m in college , I’m a full adult, unbelievable!

Let’s proceed with the actual reaction, though.

The first scene it’s surprisingly good, I mean, the way it starts all somber with the creepy music, you see all the police department and the Sheriff arriving to the woods, all the police dogs barking , the fog ,... I really liked it. Actually, I had forgotten about this scene in particular.

Like, we actually get to see the Sheriff a little bit, in my mind we weren’t introduced to the Sheriff until later in the episode. That was cool, knowing that he’s the first important character we see (even though you need to be paying a lot of attention to see that it’s him, because they just focus on showing his arm or something like that )

Suddenly, the music changes into an upbeat song, and we are in Scotts house. (God, seeing Scott fixing the Lacrosse stick gave me ALL the nostalgic feelings I could handle) Tyler Posey looks so young, like a little baby, he changes so much during the years. Not like Dylan who looks exactly the same but , with longer hair 9 years later.

Anyway, we have baby Scott (that’s how I will be referring to him for the next 2 seasons aprox) working out , being teenagery , brushing his teeth (his sink worried me a bit, maybe they should think about investing in a new one ‘cause that one looks nasty) Then, he hears a noise and freaks out. BTW, Scotts hair is a whole situation, it’s way too long for such a small face.

He freaks out, gets out of the house with a baseball bat,which might have been the highlight of my day (also,the baseball bat as a deathly weapon was Scott’s idea first ,ladies and gentlemen, let’s take that into consideration) and we are finally introduced to Stiles.

What better way to introduce him than having him hanging for his first 2 minutes on screen? (he being completely unfazed by it, and carrying the conversation like nothing was wrong, is my favorite thing in the world and the reason why I love Stiles so much) if this whole scene isn’t the reason why everyone kept watching the pilot, Idk what to tell you.

Ok, then, after the best interaction ever, Stiles has somewhat convinced Scott to go look for the body in the woods. Because, yes people, there’s a body , this body is missing a half and Stiles wants to find it. Like, of course he does, this man thinks he’s a detective or something (And yes, I did say a half because we don’t know which part is missing) So, in what has to be the most teenager/peer pressure way (reluctantly following your best friend trough the woods with a murderer on the loose) our story begins.

We have Stiles and Scott walking around trying to find the body (every sentence that leaves Dylan's mouth during this episode is gold, that's really my opinion) Scotty is worried about the prospect of founding not only the body but, the murderer, Stiles is living his best life, joking around, walking way too fast for our asthmatic baby Scott, and that's how they get separated.

We properly meet one of the best characters of the show, the sheriff Stilinski, after Stiles gets scared by another deputy that thinks he’s the murderer, and Stiles leaves with his dad. So, now we have us a baby Scott walking alone, in the dark, back home.

He’s walking for a bit, with creppy background music and various animal noises (the music and the ambiance of this show are great. Props to the music team, honestly) Then, he reaches a clearing in the middle of the forest, takes out his inhaler, and when he is about to use it, a bunch of deer bump into him causing him to fall to the ground and drop the inhaler. (I bet he was more worried about dying crushed by deer than losing it, though) When the deer have gone their merry way,and he no longer thinks he’s going to die, he gets up and starts looking for the inhaler with the light of his cell phone (with the light of the screen to be precise. Scotty isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed), but he doesn’t find his inhaler, he finds... The body (the upper part, in case someone was wondering)

Then, Scotty jumps back from the scare, and falls down a hill. When he gets up, a huge black monster attacks him and baby Scott gets bitten!

(The CGI of the first season is truly horrifying but, don’t panic my friends, it will get better)

Baby Scott runs as good as he can manage ,after being bitten by an unknown huge thing and having lost his inhaler,through the woods until he reaches the road, where he is almost hit by a car (our homeboy Scotty is having a really bad night)

The fact that he gets almost run over by Allison and her mom , who aren’t even in the show yet is amazing. Jeff did truly love this 2 because their storyline is truly wonderful, their whole relationship is handled with such care and a lot of attention to details. It makes my heart soft.

They go to school, Jackson looks like an asshole and turns out to be an asshole, normal High School shit. Scotty shows Stiles his bandage and tells him that a wolf bit him, then Stiles proceeds to laugh his ass off because there hasn’t been wolfs in California in like 60 years (Stiles is the kind of person that knows that type of thing) and , baby Scott tells him that he found the body.

Then this whole hilarious scene happens:

They go to class and Scotty starts hearing a phone ringing and turns out he’s the only one hearing it (obviously dude, you’re a werewolf) because it’s the phone of a new girl that’s outside of the High School waiting for the headmaster (I guess, I though someone else was but maybe that hasn’t happened,yet) this new girl is talking on the phone with her mom and she realizes that she forgot to bring a pen (really? You forget to bring a pen to your first day of High School? Someone wasn’t prepared)

So the headmaster brings the new girl to Scotty’s class , her name is Allison, and baby Scott has a crush on her the second he sees her (puppy love has never been more fitting )

Then, he does that whole thing of giving her a pen that she didn’t ask for (if I was Allison I’d be creeped out that someone just gave me a pen after I said outside of the building that I didn’t have one but, IDK, maybe it’s just me)

Anyway, Lydia and Allison become BFFs ,they have Lacrosse practice (we hear the Lacrosse background music for the first time) and surprise, Baby Scott didn’t suck (we also meet Coach aka the most important person of Beacon Hills high school) After school Stiles and Scott go back to the wood to look for the body and the inhaler (seriously, do this kids never learn?) while Stiles jokes about Scotty being a werewolf,and Derek Hale makes his first appearance (God Derek looks like Edward Cullen in this episode) he gives Scott his inhaler back and tells them to get out of his property (like an old man)

Stiles tells Scotty that almost all of Derek’s family died in a fire in his house and baby Scott leaves to go to work. He goes to feed the cats and they freak out, Allison comes to the vet hysterical with a dog she run over , this cutie moment happens :

Baby Scott is in love, so he asks her out to Lydia’s party that friday, Allison is also in love so she says yes. Scotty goes to sleep feeling on cloud nine and wakes up in the middle of the woods (it was a full moon the night before) he sees the big monster that attacked him the other night starts running and ends up falling in someone’s pool (Baby Scott is way to ripped for an asthmatic little kid but, ok)

He goes to school , Jackson interrogates him about steroids (fuck off Jackson, no one likes you. Well, maybe Lydia, but that’s it) Scotty freaks out about sleepwalking 40 miles into the woods, they go to Lacrosse practice and Scotty makes first line so he’s going to be playing in their first Lacrosse game of the year ,Stiles is suspicious because Scott was awful at Lacrosse like 2 days ago , and suddenly he’s a pro (like he should be, honestly, people should listen to Stiles more)

Stiles goes home researches a freaking ton about lycanthropy and werewolfs and decides that yes, his best friend is a werewolf (just like that, that was his first option and he stuck to it) he calls Scotty, tells him that he should cancel his date with Allison just in case he tries to kill her but Scott ignores him.

Melissa and baby Scott have a nice mother-son moment before his first ever date (with a lot more mentions of teenage pregnancies and underage sex for what one would expect from a first date)

Baby Scott takes Allison to the party, everything is going great, until it isn’t. Suddenly Scott starts feeling the bloodlust and the changes that Stiles had warned him about, so he leaves the party (leaving Allison alone without as mush as an apology, and without a way to get back home) Do not fear, though. Derek offers to take her home so everything’s great.

Scotty goes home while having a whole freak out and tells Stiles (who has followed him because he’s the best friend anyone could ever have) that Derek is the werewolf that bit him. Stiles tells Scotty that Derek took Allison home, Baby Scott leaves to have a fucking argument with Derek, and Stiles goes to Allison’s house (Allison was just fine so Stiles leaves)

Scotty and Derek get attacked by werewolf hunters (needless to say, Scotty won’t be sleeping in a while)

In the morning Stiles picks him up from the woods. At school Scotty apologizes to Allison, she forgives him because they are in love (or stupid , if I had been left like that in the first date I wouldn’t have forgiven him) and we are introduced to Allison’s dad

Wait, did I say Allison’s dad? I meant the werewolf hunter that tried to kill him the night before.

NB: So, I think we should probably explain a little bit about us. Obviously, I know you, you know me, but there are things that we don't know about each other.

AG: That's true. And there's things that people don't know about us. I don't know if I want people to know about us.

NB: [Laugh] How about we just put the shiny stuff or the stuff with the filter on it, the stuff we would normally put out on Insta (Instagram).

AG: Yeah! I think that's a great idea. Just the glittery, happy go lucky...yeah!

NB: I'll start off. Tell me a little bit about you.

AG: My name is Asabi. I'm from America, and I live in Brisbane [Laugh].

NB: Well, thanks. We kind of grabbed that one already. So, we're hear to talk about what we're like as 40-something, gorgeous women in the entertainment industry. What made you want to do this podcast?

AG: I just enjoy talking [laugh]. Can I say that? I just like talking. Do I like the sound of my own voice? Not always. But, in all honesty, I wanted to be able to reach out to people that might be in a similar position as me, and just let them know what life is like, and that things will be fine, in most cases. It is a hard struggle. I do hustle. I do the hustle.

NB: I know you do, and I'm super proud of you. Watching you deal with this Covid-19, bullshit quarantine - sorry, I might swear - and the fact that you've done live shows, live feeds to America, that you've created income when you've lost everything. I'm real proud of you.

AG: Thank you!

NB: It's a real tough situation that we're in right now. Not only are we 40-something and we don't look it...'cause it's really hard to cast.

AG: It is hard to get cast looking the way I do. That might sound arrogant. Let me explain it. So, most people don't realise my age. When I meet most people, they think I might be in my late 20s - that's a stretch - early 30s, mid 30s - I could get away with that. But, you know, I'm mid-40s, and one of the issues that I have with casting is that I get put out for these roles between 40 and 60, and they're looking for a mom, and then I don't get them because they're like, "...wait a minute, you don't look old enough to be in your 40s." But I am. I'm what a 40 year old looks like. This is what 40 looks like in my life.

NB: It's weird, because they're not really casting for 30s. If they were casting for 30s, we'd be sweet.

AG: We would be sweet, and there aren't many casting for 30 year olds. You just don't see a lot of it. So you see a lot of 20-somethings. You see a lot of 40 and older, but I've always known that people in their 30s tend to get overlooked. At least, that's how I feel.

NB: Look. I agree. I feel the same way. It's really tricky. And we are hustlers. We're out there. We're pushing ourselves every day, and our agents are as well. But, I think together, living together and doing this podcast, I think we will really lift our game art-wise...

AG: I hope so. That's part of it as well; just to get out there a be a bit more present, if you will, in the industry. So, whatever we can do to make ourselves more present, and then not just tell our stories, but tell other people's stories as well.

NB: Because there's so much about being an artist that I think is not just always about yourself, it's about understanding people around you, meeting people around you, loving people around you, and experiencing, you know, all of these great things that we get to know, because through the arts we do.

AG: And experiencing those things just makes you a better artist as well. You get to see these lives and eventually step into them in different characters and it's like, oh! I know someone like that! And it helps you develop that character and play that character out. So, it's good. And then of course showcasing what other people do just allows them to get out there as well. There's a bit of a [struggling] philanthropic - philanthropic, can I say that - side to my nature where I have this desire to help people achieve. I'm a huge advocate of doing what you love - something that my father instilled in me. And, I just want nothing more than for other people to also be able to do what it is that they love. So, I'm a huge advocate for that.

NB: I think we both have that in common, which is a really good starting point for a good friendship.    

AG: Yeah! It is.

AG: Collaboration. I don't know. I think this social isolation has caused my tongue to go soft [laugh], which can be good and bad. Let's not go there. That's a different conversation [laugh].

NB: I just came out of a break up. I really don't want that. So, moving on. [laugh] I've been an actress, singer, dancer, performer, pretty much my whole life - I mean, just ask my mom [laugh].

NB: I know. I think dance was a big thing for me when I was little in New Zealand, and then coming to Australia, and then when I eventually stopped dancing, I moved into performing. I did perform on stage or act on stage anyway, but it was more musical theatre or things like that, so it was a bit different.

AG: Still acting.

NB: But, I won a scholarship for TAFTA, and it opened these doors for me.

AG: What does TAFTA stand for?

NB: The Australian Film and Television Academy.

AG: Ok.

NB: Cool, right? So, that just opened and that was in the 1990s. I think it was 1999 that I graduated.

AG: I've seen videos of her too, on some dance show. It was very...amusing. So 90s [laugh]!

NB: So blessed to have the 90s in our lives, because that was a crazy, fun time.

AG: Like almost dirty, but still pretty clean.

NB: I find it really hard...like last year, 2019, was good for me. I did three feature films; small to large parts.

AG: Independent.

NB: Independent. Yes. They were independent films. There was no money in there. I did do some MCing work and there was money in that. I did a couple of little commercials, and there was a small amount of money in that. But, I actually feel like as a 40-something woman, I was starting to be looked at last year, and I felt good in my skin. I think that comes with age. I do wanna also give back. Very much like you, I believe in helping others, and you'll often find me giving advice on healthy medications or...[laugh].

AG: Yes! She tries to help me a lot, which I very much appreciate. I sometimes feel like I'm living with my mom [laugh]. But, at least I can still breathe.

I usually listen to video game OSTs, and most of the ones I listen to are so genre-blending so it’s hard to pin down. Most of it is instrumental, but I’m not opposed to music with vocals. I’m heavily abbreviating and redacting information to protect the identities of me and all involved, but in Colorado I met someone in middle school who more or less fit all my parameters for “ideal partner”. But I was terminally nervous and I didn’t want to ruin our friendship, so I left it at that. Eventually I had to abruptly leave the state for reasons I don’t want to get into, and all a week or so later I made a Facebook account and found all my friends. My contact with my crush was the most constant. Eventually, I was talking with a different buddy, and they mentioned romantic problems. I mentioned I had some too, and they eventually ferreted it out of me. They told me I should confess, and I said no, both because I want to remain friends, and because I can’t do a long-distance relationship. They told me they’d go behind my back if I didn’t, and I warned them not to. Five minutes later, I get messaged by my crush. To put it short, it wouldn’t work out.
