Polymer foam aims to transform oil spill cleanup
University of Waterloo researchers have developed a new material that can absorb more than eight times its weight in oil, offering a new solution in preventing groundwater contamination from spills or accidents. The study, "Fabrication of Triblock Elastomer Foams and Gelation Studies for Oil Spill Remediation," was published in Macro Molecular Rapid Communications. "The current technology for oil capture is lagging," said Tizazu Mekonnen, a professor at Waterloo's Department of Chemical Engineering. "Preserving our environment is crucial, which is why developing advanced technologies like this polymer is essential for remediating future groundwater contaminants that involve oil." The polymer foam—formally known as a tri-block polymer styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene (SEBS)—that Mekonnen's group designed turns into a gel upon contact with oil, that prevents groundwater contamination.

Im very into lavender these days but not in the woo woo 'this will fix my sleep problems and all other issues' pseudoscience way, it's just that i really love the smell and it's very comforting to me, which i can use a lot of right now so i try to surround myself with it as much as possible 💜
#lavender smells like how it feels to get home after a long day in the cold qnd you get to take off your wet clothes and put on soft pyjamas#and you can just get cozy in your warm bed and novidy expects anything else from you tonight no responsibilities no chores#you get to just be warm and safe and fall asleep#also bubble baths because iwe alsway had this lavender bubble bath when i was a kid and i loved it so much (i always tried to eat the foam#or rather i wanted to eat the smell itself but the closest i could get was the foam... yes it tasted bad) and i still love it a lot#oh also my best friend who ive known since kindergarten would always use this lavender oil (instead of like body lotion) after showers#(bit they changed the bottles a few years back so now they are like half the size which is ridiculous)#(we spent holidays together for years) and they still use it today but i dont get to smell it as much but that also makes me feel nostalgic#anyway lavender is amazing and i wish i could just drink that bubble bath fluid and get that cozy feeling inside of me that way#(im trying to find a tea that has mostly lavender but its not easy. most also have other stuff that i dont like... but ill keep looking!)#oh and i recently bought this lavender shower gel and that is so wonderful for a shower at night!!!#hey if any europeans wanna recommend any good (not suuuuper expensive) lavender products i could check out please tell me#winter is kicking my ass and i need anything i can get to cheer me up and comfort me#alright enough rabling#i just bought a tea i wanna try thats why i was thinking about it#mine

I think this is actually my worst impulse as a writer, not any kind of good advice for storycraft, but I’m compulsively nosy about my characters.
I want to know what they had for breakfast, and if they liked it. I want to know what they’re wearing. I want to know all their daily routines, what time they get up, what time they go to bed. I want to go through their shower supplies and their medicine cabinets and see what’s hidden at the back of their underwear drawer. I want to know what weird stuff they jerk off to. I want to download their entire search history for the last month and analyze the raw data.
#Dooku is a bar soap guy but Sifo-Dyas absolutely has Space Sandalwood foaming body wash and $30 shampoo#Yet Dooku can make a shower last 45 minutes and Sy is out in 3#Dooku’s search history is boring he uses it for work and lets be honest to google himself#Sifo’s is like a mommy blog quiche recipe followed by search strings for a horrific natural disaster that hasn’t happened yet#followed by pics of Christopher Lee wearing Those Fucking Utterly Translucent White Swim Shorts from Man with the Golden Gun#Sy's med cabinet has normal things like his antidepressants tweezers condoms bandaids ibuprofen pore strips exfoliating scrub rosehip oil#Dooku's just has row after identical row of the bar soap#my writing#star wars fanfiction#⛏️⛏️⛏️

keep thinking about those oil and water shaker charms ever since i got reminded of aqua mice again and man. mannn why is it so hard to find any information on them
#txt tag#most commercial grade ones seem to use a type of silicone oil and water + glycerin + various dyes or mica powders for the liquid part#the floaty charm though is a lot harder to figure out though .........#i was only able to find one patent so far that suggests the little figurine is weighted in some way but no clue as to what it's made of#both DIY and commercial shakers do appear to use foam#but with diy esp for any custom sculpts they have to coat them to keep the foam clay + paint they use from dissolving#whereas with commercial ones it seems like there's no protective coat at all - just straight foam in the water#so idk hmm hmm

ngl it bums me out how fast everyone hopped off masks not just for covid/communicable diseases but just the concept of revisiting personal safety equipment in general.
long post i guess
I've been taking a 5 week pottery workshop on wheel throwing (it's neat!) and we got up to glazing last week. When you glaze pots, the glaze starts as a a thick liquid and then dries really quick into a powdery form (on your clay piece). I was asking my instructor about clean up and she was like "oh you can just rub off the excess carefully, but try not to get dust in the air as it's a little toxic. obviously you're wearing a mask but the rest of us aren't"
(my partner and i wear masks b/c it's inside and that's just what we still do. it sucks but it's better than covid and also now inhaling dust/fumes)
I kinda wanted to respond "maybe we should all be wearing masks??" like if not for covid concerns, at least for the semi-toxic powder we're all just handling/some folks are breathing in O.O
(i didn't b/c tbh i'm still a little on edge with the going out/doing stuff in public thing/esp indoors and people misgender me/mispronounce my name constantly and honestly sometimes you just want to do ceramics and not fight with people. it also just didn't feel winnable)
I feel like there's so many things like that that people just disregard as a risk that don't need to be, but as a society (US at least), we just never wanted to have that conversation (it was at best, begrudging, at the height of government awareness of covid and now it's completely gone by the wayside). At this point people either respond negatively or aggressively to any suggestion of it.
But like we've all had that one art teacher/professor who was a little bit off b/c they'd just been inhaling toxic paint fumes their whole career and it was always written off as just a quirk/part of the job (maybe things are better now? new art students feel free to chime in) and not something that could have been mitigated.
idk, it just makes me sad that we never got to even have the conversation about how so many jobs/hobbies should use more personal safety equipment than they do (either b/c people feel inconvenienced by it or don't know).
(tangent but i remain appalled at how many people i see riding bikes/etc around here that don't wear helmets! it's fucking wild to me, like we had the "wear a helmet or your head will be shattered like an egg" demonstrations as early as elementary school in massachusetts. Like it's just silly not to, and yet so many people in cali are like "a helmet? i don't know her". Also adults will agree that children should, but they shouldnt?!? wear a helmet for biking/skating/etc is the hill i will die on, esp on pavement)
#text post#masks#safety equipment#anyway you should mask up both for diseases and handling toxic chemicals or things that produce toxic dust#stares at cosplayers cutting/drilling/heating up pvc/foam without masking#obvs there's different sorts of masks so do some research into what you need#but like you only generally get one pair of lungs#covid also still a thing#and the flu and other stuff#so still good to mask indoors#and wear a god damn helmet#rant i guess :)#pottery#also a lot of the glues people use for cosplay etc are toxic af#be ware of oil paints too (they make water soluable ones that are slightly safer)#lots of art disciplines use unsafe chemicals which people just don't realize i think?#my favorite “off” professor would compare human muscles to slabs of beef and go on at length about how he loved to go buy meat to paint#he was also an oil painter so def been inhaling the fumes#i took another life drawing class with a different professor and that guy clocked me as having taken meat guy's class immediately lol#meat professor had a unique way of teaching figure drawing

I miiight have just written a honey & oat brown sugar cleansing facial scrub formulation
Maybe
It might work it might not
#I never used foaming oat surfactant or eumul sg before#eumulgin*#idk if the foam oat will mix well with the honey#idk if the eumulgin sg will stabilize the two together#or if the percentage of kaolin clay and sugar isn’t too much#I’ll just have to experiment#but if this works#it’ll be great to use after oil cleansing#divspeaks

I was thinking about ☝️ Salice helping companions shave or fix their facial hair ☝️🤓 she's good at it because she had to learn to help her dad with it ages ago ☝️🤓 I thought it'd be cute.
#in another life she could've been a barber. I think#she knows all about the oils and foam and sheet. and using razors

But the thing is i want curls but i don't wanna work for them. I'll see videos like "simple wavy hair routine ^_^" and it's like seven products and would take me (thick hair at waist length when fully straight) probably four hours (conservative estimate) girl i'm not doing all that.
#i'm LAZYYYY👹👹👹👹👹👹#my wavy/curly hair routine? go swimming in da sea.#no foam no mask no shampoo or oil activates my curls as efficiently as sea salt
