Double Indemnity, Veritas Ratio and Aventurine
This was originally a part of my compilation post as a short analysis on the Double Indemnity references, linking to this great thread by Manya on Twitter. However, I've recently watched the movie and found that the parallels run much deeper than just the mission name and the light cone itself, plus as the short synopsis I've read online. Since there isn't really an in-depth attempt at an analysis on the film in relation to the way Aventurine and Ratio present themselves throughout Penacony, I thought I'd take a stab at doing just that. I will also be bringing up things from Manya's thread as well as another thread that has some extra points.
Disclaimer that I... don't do analyses very often. Or write, in general â I'm someone who likes to illustrate their thoughts (in the artistic sense) more than write. There's just something about these two that makes me want to rip into them so badly, so here we are. If there's anything you'd like to add or correct me on, feel free to let me know in the replies or reblogs, or asks. This ended up being a rather extensive deep dive into the movie and its influences on the pairing, so please keep that in mind when pressing Read More.
There are two distinct layers on display in Ratio and Aventurine's relationship throughout Penacony, which are references to the two most important relationships in the movie â where they act like they hate/donât know each other, and where they trust each other.
SPOILER WARNING for the entire movie, by the way. You can watch the film for free here on archive.org, as well as follow along with the screenplay here. I will also be taking dialogue and such from the screenplay, and cite quotes from the original novel in its own dedicated section. SPOILER WARNING for the Cat Among Pigeons Trailblaze mission, as well.
CONTENT WARNING FOR MENTIONS OF SUICIDE. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
To start, Double Indemnity (1944) is a film noir by Billy Wilder (and co-written by Raymond Chandler) based on the novel of the same name by James M. Cain (1927). There are stark differences between the movie adaptation and the original novel which I will get into later on in this post, albeit in a smaller section, as this analysis is mainly focused on the movie adaptation. I will talk about the basics (summaries for the movie and the game, specifically the Penacony mission in tandem with Ratio and Aventurine) before diving into the character and scene parallels, among other things.
â
[THE NAME]
The term "double indemnity" is a clause in which if thereâs a case of accidental death of a statistically rare variety, the insurance company has to pay out multiple of the original amount. This excludes deaths by murder, suicide, gross negligence, and natural causes.
The part of the mission in Cat Among Pigeons where Ratio and Aventurine meet with Sunday is named after the movie. And before we get further into things, let's get this part out of the way: The Chinese name used in the mission is the CN title of the movie, so there's no liberties taken with the localization â this makes it clear that itâs a nod to the movie and not localization doing its own thing like with the mission name for Heaven Is A Place On Earth (EN) / This Side of Paradise (äșșéŽć€©ć ) (CN).
â
[SUMMARY OF THE 1944 MOVIE]
Here I summarised the important parts that will eventually be relevant in the analysis related to the game.
Insurance salesman Walter Neff, wounded from a gunshot, enters his office and confesses his crime on a dictaphone to his boss Barton Keyes, the claims manager. Much earlier, he had met Phyllis Dietrichson, the wife of Mr. Dietrichson and former nurse. Neff had initially wanted to meet Mr. Dietrichson because of car insurance. Phyllis claims her husband is mean to her and that his life insurance goes to his daughter Lola. With Neff seduced by Phyllis, they eventually brew up a scheme to murder Mr. Dietrichson in such a way that they activate the "double indemnity" clause, and the plan goes off almost perfectly. Initially, the death is labeled a suicide by the president of the company, Norton.Â
Keyes finds the whole situation suspicious, and starts to suspect Phyllis may have had an accomplice. The label on the death goes from accidental, to suicide, to then murder. When itâs ruled that the husband had no idea of the accidental policy, the company refuses to pay. Neff befriends Phyllisâ stepdaughter Lola, and after finding out Phyllis may have played a part in the death of her fatherâs previous wife, Neff begins to fear for Lola and himself, as the life insurance would go all towards her, not Phyllis.
After the plan begins to unravel as a witness is found, it comes out that Lolaâs boyfriend Nino Zachette has been visiting Phyllis every night after the murder. Neff goes to confront Phyllis, intending to kill her. Phyllis has her own plans, and ends up shooting him, but is unable to fire any more shots once she realises she did love him. Neff kills her in two shots. Soon after telling Zachette not to go inside the house, Neff drives to his office to record the confession. When Keyes arrives, Neff tells him he will go to Mexico, but he collapses before he could get out of the building.
â
[THE PENACONY MISSION TIMELINE]
I wonât be summarising the entirety of Aventurine and Ratioâs endeavours from the beginning of their relationship to their final conversation in Heaven Is A Place On Earth the same way as I summarised the plot of the movie, so I will instead present a timeline. Bolded parts means they are important and have clear parallels, and texts that are in [brackets] and italics stand for the names of either the light cone, or the mission names.
[Final Victor] Their first meeting. Ratioâs ideals are turned on its head as he finally meets his match.
Several missions happen in-between their first encounter and the Penacony project. They come to grow so close and trusting with each other that they can guess, understand each otherâs thoughts, way of thinking and minds even in high stakes missions. Enough to pull off the Prisonerâs Dilemma (Aventurineâs E1) and Stag Hunt Game (Aventurineâs E6) and come out on top.
Aventurine turns towards Ratio for assisting him in the Penacony project. Ratio's involvement in the project is implied to be done without the knowledge of Jade, Topaz, and the IPC in general, as he was only sent to Penacony to represent the Intelligentsia Guild, and the two other Stonehearts never mention Ratio.
Aventurine and Ratio cook up the plan to deceive Sunday before ever setting foot on Penacony. Aventurine does not tell Ratio the entirety of his plan.
Aventurine convinces Topaz and Jade to trust him with their Cornerstones. Aventurine also breaks his own Cornerstone and hides it along with the jade within a bag of gift money.
[The Youth Who Chase Dreams] They enter Penacony in the Reverie Hotel. Aventurine is taken to the side by Sunday and has all his valuables taken, which includes the gift money that contains the broken aventurine stone, the jade, and the case containing the topaz.
Aventurine and Ratio speak in a âprivateâ room about how Aventurine messed up the plan. After faking an argument to the all-seeing eyes of Sunday, Ratio leaves in a huff.
Ratio, wearing his alabaster head, is seen around Golden Hour in the (Dusk) Auction House by March 7th.
[Double Indemnity] Ratio meets up with Sunday and âexposesâ Aventurine to him. Sunday buys his âbetrayalâ, and is now in possession of the topaz and jade. Note that this is in truth Ratio betraying Sunday all along.
Ratio meets up with Aventurine again at the bar. Ratio tells Aventurine Sunday wants to see him again.
They go to Dewlight Pavilion and solve a bunch of puzzles to prove their worth to Sunday.
They meet up with Sunday. Sunday forces Aventurine to tell the truth using his Harmony powers. Ratio cannot watch on. It ends with Aventurine taking the gift money with his Cornerstone.
[Heaven Is A Place On Earth] They are in Golden Hour. Ratio tries to pry Aventurine about his plan, but Aventurine reins him in to stop breaking character. Ratio gives him the Mundaniteâs Insight before leaving. This is their final conversation before Aventurineâs grandest death.
Now how exactly does the word âdouble indemnityâ relate to their mission in-game? What is their payout? For the IPC, this would be Penacony itself â Aventurine, as the IPC ambassador, handing in the Jade Cornerstone as well as orchestrating a huge show for everybody to witness his death, means the IPC have a reason to reclaim the former prison frontier. As for Ratio, his payout would be information on Penaconyâs Stellaron, although whether or not this was actually something he sought out is debatable. And Aventurine? Itâs highly implied that he seeks an audience with Diamond, and breaking the Aventurine Cornerstone is a one way trip to getting into hot water with Diamond. With Aventurineâs self-destructive behaviour, however, it would also make sense to say that death would be his potential payout, had he taken that path in the realm of IX.
Compared to the movie, the timeline happens in reverse and opposite in some aspects. I will get into it later. As for the intended parallels, these are pretty clear and cut:
Veritas Ratio - Walter Neff
Aventurine - Phyllis Dietrichson
Sunday - Mr. Dietrichson
There is one other character who I feel also is represented in Ratio, but I wonât bring them up until later down the line.
For the sake of this analysis, I wonât be exploring Sundayâs parallel to Mr. Dietrichson, as there isnât much on Dietrichsonâs character in the first place in both the movie and the novel. He just kind of exists to be a bastard that is killed off at the halfway point. Plus, the analysis is specifically hyper focused on the other two.
â
[SO, WHATâS THE PLAN?]
To make things less confusing in the long run whenever I mention the words âschemeâ and âplanâ, I will be going through the details of Phyllis and Neffâs scheme, and Aventurine and Ratioâs plan respectively. Anything that happens after either pair separate from another isnât going to be included. Written in a way for the plans to have gone perfectly with no outside problems.
Phyllis and Neff â> Mr. Dietrichson
Goal: Activate the double indemnity clause by killing Mr. Dietrichson and making it look like a freak train accident
Payout: Twice or more of the face value of the life insurance ($100,000)
Main Actor: Walter Neff  |  Accomplice: Phyllis Dietrichson
During the entire time until the payout, Phyllis and Neff have to make sure to any outsiders that they look like complete strangers instead of lovers in an affair.
Step-by-step:
Neff convinces Mr. Dietrichson to sign the policy with the clause without him suspecting foul play, preferably with a third party to act as an alibi. This is done discreetly, making Mr. Dietrichson not read the policy closely and being told to just sign.
Neff and Phyllis talk to each other about small details through the phone (specified to be never at Phyllisâ own house and never when Neff was in his office) and in the marketplace only, to make their meetings look accidental. They shouldnât be seen nor tracked together, after all.
Phyllis asks Mr. Dietrichson to take the train. She will be the one driving him to the train station.
On the night of the murder, after making sure his alibi is airtight, Neff sneaks into their residence and hides in their car in the second row seating, behind the front row passenger seat. He wears the same colour of clothes as Mr. Dietrichson.
Phyllis and Mr. Dietrichson get inside the car â Phyllis in the driverâs seat and Mr. Dietrichson in the passenger seat. Phyllis drives. On the way to the train station, she makes a detour into an alley. She honks the horn three times.
After the third honk, Neff breaks Mr. Dietrichsonâs neck. The body is then hidden in the second row seating under a rug.
They drive to the train station. Phyllis helps Neff, now posing as Mr. Dietrichson, onto the train. The train leaves the station.
Neff makes it to the observation platform of the parlour car and drops onto the train tracks when nobody else is there.
Phyllis is at the dump beside the tracks. She makes the car blink twice as a signal.
The two drag Mr. Dietrichsonâs corpse onto the tracks.
They leave.
When Phyllis eventually gets questioned by the insurance company, she pretends she has no idea what they are talking about and eventually storms off.
Phyllis and Neff continue to lay low until the insurance company pays out.
Profit!
Actual Result: The actual murder plan goes almost smoothly, with a bonus of Mr. Dietrichson having broken a leg. But with him not filing a claim for the broken leg, a witness at the observation platform, and Zachette visiting Phyllis every night after the murder, Keyes works out the murder scheme on his own, but pins the blame on Phyllis and Zachette, not Neff.
Now for Aventurine and Ratio. You can skip this section if you understand how deep their act goes, but to those who need a refresher, hereâs a thorough explanation:
Aventurine and Ratio â> Sunday
Goal: Collect the aventurine stone without Sunday knowing, ruin the dream (and create the grandest death)
Payout: Penacony for the IPC, information on the Stellaron for Ratio, a meeting with Diamond / death for Aventurine
Main Actor: Aventurine  |  Accomplice: Veritas Ratio
From the moment they step onto Penacony, they are under Sundayâs ever present and watchful eyes. âPrivacyâ is a foreign word to The Family. They have to act like they donât like each otherâs company the entire time and feed Sunday information through indirect means so that the eventual âbetrayalâ by Ratio seems truthful to Sunday. Despite what it looks like, they are closer than one would ever think, and Ratio would never sell out a person purely for information.
Step-by-step:
After Sunday takes away the bag of gift money and box, Aventurine and Ratio talk in a room in the Reverie Hotel.
Aventurine establishes the Cornerstonesâ importance, and how he lost the gift money and the case containing the Cornerstones to Sunday. Ratio turns to leave, saying âsome idiot ruined everythingâ, meaning the Cornerstones were vital to their plan. (Note that Ratio is not wearing his alabaster head while saying it to said âidiotâ.)
Aventurine then proceeds to downplay the importance of the Cornerstones, stating they are ânothing more than a few rocksâ and âwho cares if they are goneâ. This lets Sunday know that something suspicious may be going on for him to act like itâs nothing, and the mention of multiple stones, and leaves him to look up what a Cornerstone is to the Ten Stonehearts of the IPC.
Ratio points out his absurd choice of outfit, mentioning the Attini Peacock and their song.
Ratio implies that without the aventurine stone, he is useless to the IPC. He also establishes that Aventurine is from Sigonia(-IV), and points out the mark on his neck. To Sunday, this means that Aventurine is shackled to the IPC, and how Aventurine may possibly go through extreme lengths to get the stone back, because a death sentence always looms above him.
Aventurine claims Ratio had done his homework on his background, which can be taken that this is their very first time working together. (It isnât, and it only takes one look to know that Aventurine is an Avgin because of his unique eyes, so this comment does not make sense even in a âsincereâ way, a running theme for the interaction.)
Ratio mentions how the true goal is to reclaim Penacony for the IPC, establishing their ulterior motive for attending the banquet.
Ratio asks if Aventurine went to pre-school in Sigonia after saying trust was reliant on cooperation. Aventurine mentions how he didnât go to school and how he doesnât have any parents. He even brings up how friends are weapons of the Avgins. This tells Sunday that the Avgins supposedly are good at manipulation and potentially sees Ratio possibly betraying Aventurine due to his carelessness with his âfriendsâ. Sunday would also then research about the Avgins in general (and research about Sigonia-IV comes straight from the Intelligentsia Guild.)
Ratio goes to Dewlight Pavilion in Sundayâs Mansion and exposes a part of Aventurineâs âplanâ. When being handed the suitcase, Ratio opens it up due to his apparent high status in the IPC. He tells Sunday that the Cornerstone in the suitcase is a topaz, not an aventurine, and that the real aventurine stone is in the bag of gift money. This is a double betrayal â on Aventurine (who knows) and Sunday (who doesnât). Note that while Ratio is not officially an IPC member in name â the Intelligentsia Guild (which is run by the IPC head of the Technology Department Yabuli) frequently collaborates with the IPC. Either Aventurine had given him access to the box, or Ratioâs status in general is ambiguous enough for Sunday not to question him further. He then explains parts of Aventurineâs gamble to Sunday in order to sell the betrayal. Note that Ratio does not ever mention Aventurineâs race to Sunday.
Ratio brings Aventurine to Sunday. Aventurine offers help in the investigation of Robin's death, requesting the gift money and the box in return.
Sunday objects to the trade offer. Aventurine then asks for just the bag. A classic car insurance sales tactic. Sunday then interrogates Aventurine, and uses everything Ratio and Aventurine brought up in the Reverie Hotel conversation and their interactions in the Mansion, as well as aspects that Ratio had brought up to Sunday himself.
Aventurine feigns defeat and ignorance enough so that Sunday willingly lets him go with the gift bag. After all is said and done, Aventurine leaves with the gift money, where the Aventurine Cornerstone is stored all along.
Ratio and Aventurine continue to pretend they dislike each other until they go their separate ways for their respective goals and plans. Aventurine would go on to orchestrate his own demise at the hands of Acheron, and Ratio⊠lurks in the shadows like the owl he is.
Profit!
Actual Result: The plan goes perfectly, even with minor hiccups like Ratio coming close to breaking character several times and Aventurine being sentenced to execution by Sunday.
This is how Sunday uses the information he gathered against Aventurine:
âą Sunday going on a tirade about the way Aventurine dresses and how heâs not one to take risks â Ratioâs comment about Aventurineâs outfit being peacock-esque and how heâs âshort of a feather or twoâ. âą âDo you own a Cornerstone?â â Ratio talked about the aventurine stone. âą âDid you hand over the Cornerstone to The Family when you entered Penacony?â â Aventurine mentioned the box containing the Cornerstones. âą âDoes the Cornerstone you handed over to The Family belong to you?â â Aventurine specifically pluralized the word Cornerstone and âa bunch of rocksâ when talking to Ratio. âą âIs your Cornerstone in this room right now?â â The box in the room supposedly contained Aventurineâs own cornerstone, when Aventurine mentioned multiple stones. âą âAre you an Avgin from Sigonia?â âAventurine mentioned that heâs an Avgin, and Ratio brought up Sigonia. âą âDo the Avgins have any ability to read, control, and manipulate oneâs own or anotherâs minds?â â Aventurineâs comment on how friends are weapons, as well as Sundayâs own research on the Avgins, leading him to find out about the negative stereotypes associated with them. âą âDo you love your family more than yourself?â â His lost parents. âAll the Avgins were killed in a massacre. Am I right?â â Based on Sundayâs research into his background. âą âAre you your clanâs sole survivor?â â Same as the last point. âDo you hate and wish to destroy this world with your own hands?â â Ratio mentioned the IPCâs goal to regain Penacony, and Aventurineâs whole shtick is âall or nothingâ. âą âCan you swear that at this very moment, the aventurine stone is safe and sound in this box?â â Repeat.
As seen here, both duos have convoluted plans that involve the deception of one or more parties while also pretending that the relationship between each other isnât as close as in reality. Unless you knew both of them personally and their histories, there was no way you could tell that they have something else going on.Â
On to the next point: Comparing Aventurine and Ratio with Phyllis and Neff.
â
[NEFF & PHYLLIS â RATIO & AVENTURINE]
With the short summaries of the movie and the mission out of the way, letâs look at Phyllis and Neff as characters and how Aventurine and Ratio are similar or opposite to them.
Starting off with Aventurine and Phyllis. Here is where they are the most similar:
Phyllis is blonde and described as a provocative woman. Aventurine is also a blond and eyes Ratio provocatively in the Final Victor light cone.
Phyllis was put under surveillance after Keyes starts figuring out that the so-called accidental death/suicide may have been a murder after all. Similarly, Aventurine was watched by Sunday the entire time in Penacony.
Phyllis never tells Neff how she's seeing another man on the side to possibly kill him too (as well as how she was responsible for the death of her husbandâs previous wife). Aventurine also didn't tell Ratio the entirety of his plan of his own death.
Phyllis puts on a somewhat helpless act at first but is incredibly capable of making things go her way, having everything seemingly wrapped around her finger. Aventurine â even when putting on a facade that masks his true motives â always comes out at the top.
Now the differences between Aventurine and Phyllis:
Phyllis does not care about her family and has no issue with killing her husband, his previous wife, and possibly her daughter Lola. Opposite of that, Aventurine is a family man⊠with no family left, as well as feeling an insane level of survivorâs guilt.
Really, Phyllis just⊠does not care at all about anyone but herself and the money. Aventurine, while he uses every trick in the book to get out on top, does care about the way Jade and Topaz had entrusted him with their Cornerstones, in spite of the stones being worth their lives.Â
Phyllis also uses other people to her advantage to get what she wants, often behind other people's backs, with the way she treats Neff and Zachette. Aventurine does as well (what with him making deals with the Trailblazer while also making a deal with Black Swan that involves the Trailblazer). The difference here is Phyllis uses her allure deliberately to seduce men while Aventurine simply uses others as pawns while also allowing others to do the same to himself.
Phyllis makes no attempt at compromising the policy when questioned by Norton. Aventurine ends up compromising by only taking the gift money (which is exactly what he needs).
The wig that Barbara Stanwyck (the actress of Phyllis) wore was chosen to make her look as âsleazyâ as possible, make her look insincere and a fraud, a manipulator. A sort of cheapness. Aventurineâs flashy peacock-esque outfit can be sort of seen as something similar, except the outfit isnât cheap.
Moving on to Ratioâs similarities to Neff⊠There isnât much to extrapolate here as Ratio is more of a side character in the grand scheme of Penacony, however this is what Iâve figured out.
Neff has dark hair. Ratio has dark purple hair.
Neff almost never refers to Phyllis by her name when speaking with her, only as âbabyâ. The few times he refers to her as Phyllis or Mrs. Dietrichson is during their first conversations and when he has to act like he doesnât know her. Ratio never calls Aventurine by his name when heâs around him â only as âgamblerâ, sometimes âdamnedâ or âdearâ (EN-only) gambler. Only in the Aventurine's Keeping Up With Star Rail episode does Ratio repeatedly say his name, and yet he still calls him by monikers like âgamblerâ or, bafflingly, a âsystem of chaos devoid of logicâ.
Both Neff and Ratio committed two betrayals: Neff on Mr. Dietrichson and Keyes, and Ratio on Sunday and Aventurine. With the former cases it was to reach the end of the trolley line, and with the latter it was on a man who had put his trust in him.
As for the differencesâŠ
Neff is described as someone whoâs not smart by his peers. Ratio is someone who is repeatedly idolised and put on a pedestal by other people.
Neff is excellent at pretending to not know nor care for Phyllis whenever he speaks about her with Keyes or when he and she are in a place that could land them in hot water (the office, the mansion when there are witnesses). His acting is on the same level as Phyllis. With Ratio itâs⊠complicated. While he does pull off the hater act well, he straight up isnât great at pretending not to care about Aventurineâs wellbeing.
Instead of getting his gunshot wound treated in the hospital like a normal person, Neff makes the absolutely brilliant decision of driving to his office and talking to a dictaphone for hours. Needless to say, this is something a medical doctor like Ratio would never do.
Now here's the thing. Though it's very easy to just look at Phyllis and Neff in the movie and go "okay, Aventurine is Phyllis and Ratio is Neff â end of story" and leave it at that, I find that they both take from the two leads in different ways. Let me explain. Beginning with Aventurine and NeffâŠ
Neff is the one who hatches the plan and encourages Phyllis to go through and claim the double indemnity clause in the first place. He is also the key player of his own risky plan, having to fake being the husband to enter the train as well as fake the death. Aventurine puts himself at great risk just by being in Sundayâs presence, and hoping that Sunday wouldnât figure out that the green stone he had uncovered wasnât the aventurine stone.
Adding onto the last point, Neff had fantasised about pulling off the perfect murder for a long time â the catalyst was simply him meeting Phyllis. Aventurine presumably sought out Ratio alone for his plan against Sunday.
Neff makes a roulette wheel analogy and talks about a pile of blue and yellow poker chips (the latter in the script only). I donât even have to explain why this is relevant here. (Aventurineâs Ultimate features a roulette wheel and the motif is on his belt, thigh strap, and back, too. And of course, Aventurine is all about his chips.)
Neff has certain ways to hide when heâs nervous, which include hiding his hands in his pockets when they were shaking, putting on glasses so people couldnât see his eyes. Aventurine hides his left hand behind his back when heâs nervous: Future Aventurine says that "they don't know the other hand is below the table, clutching [his] chips for dear life", and in multiple occasions such as the Final Victor LC, his character trailer, and even in his boss form in the overworld you can see that Aventurine hides his left hand behind his back. And he is also seen with his glasses on sometimes.
Neff says a bunch of stuff to make sure that Phyllis acts her part and does not act out of character (i.e. during their interactions at the market), like how Aventurine repeatedly tries to get Ratio back on track from his subpar acting.
Neff is always one step ahead of the game, and the only reason the plan blows up in his face is due to outside forces that he could not have foreseen (a witness, Keyes figuring out the plan, the broken leg). Aventurine meanwhile plays 5D chess and even with the odds against him, he uses everything he can to come out on the top (i. e. getting Acheron to kill him in the dream).
Even after coming home on the night of the murder, Neff still felt that everything could have gone wrong. Aventurine, with his blessed luck, occasionally wavers and fears everything could go wrong whenever he takes a gamble.
Neff was not put under surveillance by Keyes due to him being extensive with his alibi. After witnessing Robinâs death with eyewitnesses at the scene, the Family had accepted Aventurineâs alibi, though he would be under watch from the Bloodhounds according to Ratio.
Neff talks about the entire murder scheme to the dictaphone. Aventurine during Cat Among Pigeons also retells his plan, albeit in a more convoluted manner, what with his future self and all.
Continuing with Ratio and Phyllis, even with their personalities and motivations being quite different, they do have a few commonalities.
Phyllis was a nurse. Ratio is a medical doctor.
Her name is Greek of origin. Veritas Ratio, though his name is Latin, has Greco-Roman influences throughout his entire character.
The very first scene Phyllis appears in has her wearing a bath towel around her torso. Ratio loves to take baths to clear his mind.
Phyllis was instructed by Neff to be at the market every morning at eleven buying things. Ratio is seen in an auction house with his alabaster head on so no one could recognize him.
Phyllis mostly acts as an accomplice to the scheme, being the one to convince her husband to take the train instead. She is also generally seen only when Neff is involved. Ratio plays the same role as well, only really appearing in the story in relation to Aventurine as well as being the accomplice in Aventurineâs own death. Even him standing in the auction house randomly can be explained by the theory that he and Aventurine had attempted to destabilise Penaconyâs economy through a pump and dump scheme.
With these pointers out of the way, letâs take a closer look at select scenes from the film and their relation to the mission and the pair.Â
â
[THE PHONE CALL â THE REVERIE HOTEL]
Before the murder, there is a scene with a phone call between Phyllis and Neff discussing the plan while Keyes is in the same room as Neff. Neff has to make sure that Keyes doesnât think of anything of the phone call, so he acts like heâs calling a âMargieâ, and says a bunch of stuff that sounds innocent out of context (âCanât I call you back, âMargieâ?â âWhat color did you pick out?â âNavy blue. I like that fineâ), but are actually hinting at the real plan all along (the suit that Mr. Dietrichson wears.)
In a roundabout way, the conversation between Ratio and Aventurine in the Reverie Hotel can be seen as the opposite of that scene â with the two talking about their supposed plan out loud on Penacony ground, a place where the Family (and in turn, Sunday) has eyes everywhere. Despite being in a âprivateâ room, they still act like they hate each other while airing out details that really do not make sense to air out if they really did meet the first time in Penacony (which they didnât â theyâve been on several missions beforehand). Itâs almost like they want a secret third person to know what they were doing, instead of trying to be hushed up about it. The TVs in the room that Sunday can look through based on Inherently Unjust Destiny â A Moment Among The Stars, the Bloodhound statue that disappears upon being inspected, the owl clock on the left which side eyes Ratio and Aventurine, all point to that Sunday is watching their every move, listening to every word.
Rewinding back to before the phone call, in one of the encounters at the marketplace where they âaccidentallyâ run into each other, Phyllis talks about how the trip was off. How her husband wouldnât get on the train, which was vital for their plan, because of a broken leg. All this, while pretending to be strangers by the passersby. You could say that the part where Ratio almost leaves because Aventurine had âruined the planâ is the opposite of this, as the husband breaking his leg was something they couldnât account for, while Aventurine âbeing short of a few feathersâ was entirely part of the plan.
â
[QUESTIONING PHYLLIS â THE INTERROGATION]
This section is going to be a little longer as I will cover two scenes in the movie in a more detailed manner â Mr. Dietrichson signing the policy, and Phyllis being questioned â and how they are represented in the Sunday-Aventurine interrogation and the prior conversation between Ratio and Sunday in multitudes of ways.
Going about their plan, Neff has to make sure that Mr. Dietrichson signs the policy with the double indemnity clause without him knowing the details, all the while having Phyllis (and Lola) in the same room. He and Phyllis have to pretend that they donât know each other, and that this is just the standard accidental insurance process, instead of signing what would be his downfall. To sell it, he gets Mr. Dietrichson to sign two âcopiesâ of the form, except with Mr. Dietrichsonâs second signature, heâs duped into signing the accident insurance policy with the respective clause.
You can tie this to how Ratio goes to Sunday in order to âexposeâ the lie that the suitcase didnât actually contain the Aventurine Cornerstone, as well as there being more than one Cornerstone involved in the scheme. Ratio must make sure that Sunday truly believes that he dislikes Aventurineâs company, while also making sure that Sunday doesnât figure out the actual aventurine stone is broken and hidden in the gift bag. The scheme turns out to be successful, as Sunday retrieves the two Cornerstones, but not the aventurine stone, and truly does think that the green stone he has in his possession is the aventurine.
This whole scene with Sunday is also reminiscent of the interrogation scene in the middle of the movie, where Phyllis was questioned by the boss (Norton) who was deducing that Mr. Dietrichson's death was a suicide, not accidental death. Neff, Phyllis, Keyes and Norton were all in the same room, and Neff and Phyllis had to act like they never knew the other. Phyllis acts like she knows nothing about what Norton insinuates about her husband and eventually, Phyllis explodes in anger and storms out the room, even slamming the door. Her act is very believable to any outsider.
Now back to the Ratio and Sunday conversation. One glaring difference between the movie and here is that his acting isnât great compared to either Phyllis nor Neff. It never was throughout the Penacony mission. He even comes very close to breaking character several times, and is even defending Aventurine in a somewhat aggressive manner during his one-on-one conversation with Sunday, as in he literally tells Sunday to see a shrink. Itâs very different from the way he was acting in Herta Space Station â like Ratio cares about Aventurine too much to keep his hands off.
It's also worth pointing out that Neff doesn't speak a word when Phyllis was being interrogated. Similarly, Ratio is silent throughout the entire scene with Sunday and Aventurine, with his only âlineâ being a âhmâ. When Aventurine calls him a wretch to his face, all he does is look to the side. In fact, he can only look at Aventurine when the other isnât staring back. Almost like him uttering a single word would give them away. Or his acting is terrible when it has to do with Aventurine, as he has no issue doing the same thing in Crown of the Mundane and Divine (Mundane Troubles).
So, Sunday finds out about the Cornerstones and reveals them to Aventurine, and reasons that he cannot give them back to him because Aventurine had lied. Note that in that same scene, Aventurine attempted to use the two murders that had occurred beforehand against Sunday to retrieve his own cornerstone. Similarly, when it was revealed that Mr. Dietrichson did not know about the accident policy and that the so-called âaccidental deathâ was not, in fact, accidental, the insurance company refused to pay out the money.
Unlike the movie, this was all planned, however. The double-crossing by Ratio, the gift money being the only thing required for Aventurineâs real plan. All of it was an act of betrayal against Sunday, in the same manner as the meticulous planning as Mr. Dietrichsonâs murder â To sign the policy, get him to take the train, kill him on the way, and to have Neff pose as the husband on the train until the time is right to get off and lay the body on the tracks. A key difference is that they could not have expected their scheme to be busted wide open due to forces outside of their control, while Ratio and Aventurine went straight down the line for the both of them no matter what.
From here on out, we can conclude that the way Ratio and Aventurine present themselves in Penacony to onlookers is in line with Neff and Phyllis.
â
[âGOODBYE, BABYâ â FINAL VICTOR]
And now for the (in)famous light cone, Final Victor. The thing that truly kickstarted the Ratio and Aventurine ship in the fanbase, and the partnership between the two in general. Itâs a direct reference to the final confrontation between Neff and Phyllis in the movie.
Iâll fire through all the similarities between the two scenes.
During the respective scenes, Aventurine and Phyllis both outsmart their partner one way or the other: Aventurine with his one-sided game of Russian Roulette, and Phyllis hiding her gun underneath the cushions until Neff turned away.
The guns are owned by Phyllis and Aventurine, not Neff and Ratio.
Phyllis couldnât bring herself to fire any more shots after she realised she truly did love Neff. Ratio could do nothing but watch as Aventurine did what he did â he couldnât even pull away if the LC animation is anything to go by him struggling as Aventurine firmly keeps the gun to his chest.
Neff says he doesnât buy (believe) that Phyllis loved him. She then goes âIâm not asking you to buy [âŠ]â. The LC description has Aventurine ask Ratio âYou donât believe me?â, while in the LC animation Ratio straight up says âYou expect me to believe you?â and Aventurine answering âWhy not, doctor/professor?â
The visual composition of the LC and the scene are nearly identical, from the lighting to the posing to the way Aventurine looks at Ratio â Aventurine and Ratio are even wearing different outfits to fit the scene better. The background in the LC is also like the blinders in the movie, just horizontal.
In the shot where Phyllisâ face is more visible, the way she looks at Neff is strikingly like the way provocatively looks at Ratio. Even their eyes have a visible shine â Phyllisâ eyes brightly shining the moment she realised she really fell in love with Neff, and Aventurine having just a little light return to his eyes in that specific moment.
And now the differences!
Neff holds the gun in his right hand. Aventurine makes Ratio hold his gun in his left.
Neff is the one who takes the gun from Phyllisâ hand. Aventurine is the one who places the gun in Ratioâs hand and fires it.
Three gunshots are fired. In the movie, Phyllis shoots the first shot and Neff the second and third. Aventurine unloads the gun and leaves only one bullet for this game of Russian Roulette. He pulls the trigger three times, but they all turn out to be blanks.
Phyllis does not break her façade of not smiling until the very last moment where she gets shot. Aventurine is smiling the entire time according to the light cone description, whilst in the animation, itâs only when he guides the gun to his chest that he puts it on.
So, you know how Neff meets Phyllis and it all goes off the rails from there. The way Neff goes from a decent guy to willingly involve himself in a murder scheme, having his morals corrupted by Phyllis. His world having been turned upside down the moment he lays eyes on Phyllis in that first meeting. Doesnât that sound like something that happened with the Final Victor LC? Ratio, a man all about logic and rationality â a scholar with eight PhDs to his name â all of that is flipped on its head the moment Aventurine pulls out his gun in their first meeting and forces Ratio to play a game of Russian roulette with him. Aventurine casually gambles using his own life like itâs nothing and seemingly without fear (barring his hidden left hand). All or nothing â and yet Aventurine comes out alive after three blanks. Poetic, considering thereâs a consumable in the game called âAll or Nothingâ which features a broken chess piece and a poker chip bound together by a tie. The poker chip obviously represents the gambler, but the chess piece specifically stands for Ratio because he plays chess in his character trailer, his Keeping Up With Star Rail episode and his introduction is centred around him playing chess with himself. Plus, the design of the chess piece has golden accents, similar to his own chess set. In the end, Aventurine will always be the final victor.
Furthermore, Neff had deduced that Phyllis wanted to kill her husband and initially wanted no part in it, but in a subsequent visit it was his own idea that they trigger the double indemnity clause for more money. As the movie progresses though, he starts to have his doubts (thanks in part to him befriending Lola) and makes the move to kill Phyllis when everything starts to come to light. Itâs strikingly similar to how Ratio initially wanted no part in whatever Aventurine had in mind when they first met, but in the subsequent missions where they were paired up, he willingly goes along with Aventurine's risky plans, and they come to trust each other. Enough so that Aventurine and Ratio can go to Penacony all on their own and put on an act, knowing that nobody in the IPC other than them can enter the Dreamscape. The mutual respect grew over time, instead of burning passionately before quickly fizzling out like in the movie.
Basically, in one scene, three shots (blanks) start a relationship, and in the other, it ends a relationship. In the anan magazine interview with Aventurine, he says himself that âform[ing] an alliance with just one bulletâ with Ratio was one of his personal achievements. The moment itself was so impactful for both parties that it was immortalised and turned into a light cone.
â
[THE ENDING â GOLDEN HOUR]
The ending of Double Indemnity that made it into the final cut has Neff continue his confession on the dictaphone until he realised that he wasnât alone in the room. Keyes had come inside at some point, but none had said a thing, only listening to a dead man speak of his crime. When Neff sees Keyes, they talk for a moment, Neff says he plans on fleeing to Mexico. Keyes does not think he will make it. He tries to leave, only to collapse at the front of the elevator, Keyes following just behind him. Neff attempts to light a cigar but is too weak to do so, so Keyes does it for him.
Parts of the ending can still be attributed to the interrogation scene between Sunday and Aventurine, so Iâll make this quick before moving on to the conversation in Heaven Is A Place On Earth, Ratio and Aventurineâs final conversation together. Once Sunday mentions how quickly Aventurine gave up the suitcase, he inflicts the Harmonyâs consecration on him, which forces Aventurine to confess everything that Sunday asks of. In a way, itâs the opposite of what happens in the movie â where Neff willingly tells the truth about the murder to his coworker. Aventurine does not like Sunday, and Neff is close to Keyes. Ratio also does not speak, similarly to how Keyes didnât speak and stood silently off to the side.
Post-interrogation in Golden Hour, Ratio worriedly prods at Aventurine and asks him about his plan. He then gives him the Mundaniteâs Insight with the Doctorâs Advice inside when Aventurine tells him to leave. Throughout Heaven Is A Place On Earth, Aventurine gets weaker and his head starts to buzz, until he falls to the ground before he can hand in the final gems. Similarly, Neff progressively grows weaker as he records his confession. Keyes says heâs going to call a doctor and Neff says heâs planning to go to Mexico. And when Neff collapses near the elevator, they talk one final time and Keyes lights Neffâs cigar as the other was too weak to do so himself.
â
[OPPOSITE TIMELINES AND DEVELOPMENTS]
Remember how I said the way certain events happen in the movie and the game are mostly opposite and reverse of one another?Â
The Final Victor LC is the first meeting of Ratio and Aventurine, and Neff killing Phyllis is their final meeting.
Between that first and last meeting between Phyllis and Neffâs whirlwind romance, their relationship becomes strained which ultimately leads to Neff not trusting whatever Phyllis has to say at the end point of the movie. As for Ratio and Aventurine, the exact opposite had happened, to the point where Ratio trusts Aventurine enough to go along with his plans even if they went against his own ideals. The basis of the mission involved Veritas Ratio, whose full name includes the Latin word for âtruthâ, lying the entire time on Penacony.
Aventurine is sentenced to the gallows by Sunday after his unwilling interrogation. The movie starts and ends with Neff willingly confessing everything to Keyes.
It bears repeating, but I have to make it so clear that the trust between Ratio and Aventurine runs incredibly deep. Being able to predict what your partner says and thinks and plans in a mission as critical as the Penacony project is not something first-time co-workers can pull off flawlessly. All the while having to put on masks that prevent you from speaking sincerely towards one another lest you rat yourselves out. You have no way of contacting outside reinforcements from within Penacony, as the rest of the IPC are barred from entering. To be able to play everybody for fools while said fools believe you yourselves have handed your case on a silver platter requires a lot â trust, knowledge of the other, past experience, and so on. With Phyllis and Neff, the trust they had had been snuffed out when Neff grew closer to Lola and found out what kind of person Phyllis truly was on the inside. Phyllis did not trust nor love Neff enough and was going behind his back to meet with Zachette to possibly take Neff and Lola out. And the whole reason Neff wanted to perpetrate the murder was due to him being initially taken by Phyllis' appearance, which single handedly got the ball rolling on the crime.
Now then, how come trust is one of the defining aspects of Aventurine and Ratioâs relationship, when Phyllis and Neffâs trust eventually lead to both their deaths at the hands of the other? Sure, this can be explained away with the opposite theory, but thereâs one other relationship involving Neff which I havenât brought up in excruciating detail yet. The other side of Ratio and Aventurineâs relationship.
â
[NEFF & KEYES â AVENTURINE & RATIO]
Here is where it gets more interesting â while Phyllis and Neff are at the centre point of the movie, there is another character to whom Neff has a close relationship with â Keyes. Itâs also the only relationship with no pretences, at least, until the whole murder thing happened and Neff had to hide his involvement from Keyes. Watching the movie, I couldn't help but feel there was something more to the two than meets the eye. I knew that queer readings of the film existed, but I didn't think too much of them until now. And though Aventurine and Ratio parallel Phyllis and Neff respectively, the fact that they also have traits of their opposite means that it wouldnât be completely out of the question if parts of their relationship were also influenced by Keyes and Neff on a deeper and personal level. Let me explain.
Keyes and Neff were intimate friends for eleven years and have shown mutual respect and trust towards one another. They understood each other on a level not seen with Phyllis and Neff. Even after hearing Neff confess his crimes through the dictaphone (and eventually standing in the same room while Neff confessed), he still cared for the other man, and stayed with him when Neff collapsed at the front door. The only reason Keyes hadnât deduced that it was Neff who was behind the murder was because he had his absolute trust in him. Keyes is also Neffâs boss, and they are always seen exchanging playful banter when they are on screen together. Neff even says the words âI love you, tooâ twice in the movie â first at the beginning and second at the end, as the final line. Thereâs also the persistent theme of Neff lighting Keyesâ cigarettes (which happens in every scene where they are face-to-face), except in the end where itâs Keyes who lights Neffâs.
Doesnât that sound familiar? Mutual respect, caring too much about the other person, the immense amount of trust⊠Ratio says heâs even the manager of the Penacony project (which may or may not be a lie), and despite their banter being laced with them acting as âenemiesâ, you can tell that in Dewlight Pavilion pre-Sunday confrontation that Aventurine genuinely likes Ratioâs company and believes him to be a reliable person. From the way he acts carefree in his words to the thoughts in his head, as seen in the mission descriptions for Double Indemnity. Their interactions in that specific mission are possibly the closest thing to their normal way of speaking that we get to see on Penacony.
Not to mention, this is the way Neff describes Keyes. He even says (not in the script) âyou never fooled me with your song and dance, not for a second.â Apart from the line about the cigar ashes, doesnât this ring a bell to a certain doctor? âJerkâ with a heart of gold?
After solving the puzzle with the statues, Ratio jokingly offers Aventurine to join the Genius Society. Aventurine then goes "Really? I thought youâve given up on that already", and then Ratio says it was, in fact, a joke. Solving the puzzle through brute force has Ratio telling Aventurine that the Council of Mundanites (which Ratio himself is a part of) should consider him a member. In the movie, where the scene with the phone call with Neff and Phyllis reiterating details of their plan happens, Keyes actually offered Neff a better job (specifically a desk job, as Keyesâ assistant). The two pairs saw the other as smart, equals, and were invested in each otherâs careers one way or another.
Because of all this, the character parallels for this side of the relationship are as follows:
Aventurine - Walter Neff
Veritas Ratio - Barton Keyes
With the way Iâve talked about how Aventurine and Ratio take from both leads in terms, it does fit to say that Aventurine is Neff, and Ratio is Keyes in this layer of their relationship. Since weâre on the topic of Keyes, let me also go through some similarities with him and Ratio specifically.
Keyes says the words âdimwitted amateursâ in his first on-screen conversation with Neff. You canât have Dr. Ratio without him talking about idiocy in some way.
Keyes almost only appears in the movie in relation to Neff, and barring a single interaction in Neffâs house, is also only seen in the office. Same with Phyllis, Ratio also only ever appears regarding Aventurine.
Keyes genuinely wanted the best for Neff, even offering to celebrate with him when he thought the case truly had been busted wide open by forces when Zachette entered the picture. You could say the same for Ratio, as he hoped that Aventurine wouldnât dwell on the past according to his response on Aventurineâs Interview, as well as telling him to âstay alive/live on (CN)â and wishing him the best of luck in his Doctorâs Advice note.
Whether or not you believe that there was more going on with Neff and Keyes is up to you, but what matters is that the two were very close. Just like Ratio and Aventurine.
â
[THE ORIGINAL FILM ENDING]
Something that I hadnât seen brought up is the original ending of Double Indemnity, where Neff is executed in a gas chamber while Keyes watches on, shocked, and afterwards leaves somberly. The ending was taken out because they were worried about the Hays Code, but I felt it was important to bring it up, because in a way, you can kind of see the Sunday interrogation scene as Sunday sending Aventurine to his death in seventeen system hours. And Ratio doesnât speak at all in that scene, and Keyes doesnât either according to the script.
Another thing thatâs noteworthy is that Wilder himself said âthe story was about the two guysâ in Conversations with Wilder. The two guys in question are Keyes and Neff.
â
[THE NOVEL]
With the original film ending covered, now it is time to bring up the novel by James M. Cain. I bought the book just to read about the differences between the adaptation and the original source material, and to list a few more similarities and opposites I could gather. For this section alone, due to the changes in the (last) names of certain characters, I will be referring to Walter Huff (Neff in the movie) as Walter, and Mr. Dietrichson as Nirdlinger. The plot is pretty much the same as the movieâs apart from a couple of changes so there isnât a need to recount everything.
From my two read-throughs of the novel, these are the following passages that stood out to me the most. Starting with Aventurine:
Walter, as a top businessman of the company, knows how to sway a deal and to get what he truly wants with what the other gives him. Aventurine is the same, reliant on his intuition, experience and whatever information he has on the table to claim the win. Him luring out Sparkle in Heaven Is A Place On Earth and his conversation with Acheron in the Nihility is indicative of that.
âą "But you sell as many people as I do, you don't go by what they say. You feel it, how the deal is going. And after a while I knew this woman didn't care anything about the Automobile Club. Maybe the husband did, but she didn't. There was something else, and this was nothing but a stall. I figured it would be some kind of a proposition to split the commission, maybe so she could get a ten-spot out of it without the husband knowing. There's plenty of that going on. And I was just wondering what I would say to her."Â
Phyllis, like in the movie, had been hiding her true intentions of talking to Walter in their first conversations, always saying things that she didnât actually mean. In a similar vein, Aventurine consistently says stuff but almost never truly means any of it, which is all part of his façade.
âą "And I could feel it again, that she wasn't saying what she meant. It was the same as it was the first afternoon I met her, that there was something else, besides what she was telling me. And I couldn't shake it off, that I had to call it on her."
When discussing the murder plan with Phyllis, Walter makes this comment, kind of like how Aventurine seems to operate in a way where he has a plan, but is ready to improvise and think fast when needed.
âą "And then it's one of those things where you've got to watch for your chance, and you can't plan it in advance, and know where you're going to come out to the last decimal point."
Remember the roulette wheel line from the movie? In the novel, the gambling metaphor that Walter makes about the insurance business goes on for two paragraphs, mentioning a gambling wheel, stack of chips, a place with a big casino and the little ivory ball, even about a bet on the table. Walter also talks about how he thinks of tricks at night after being in the business for so long, and how he could game the system. Needless to say, insanely reminiscent of Aventurine.
âą "You think Iâm nuts? All right, maybe I am. But you spend fifteen years in the business Iâm in, and maybe a little better than that, itâs the friend of the widow, the orphan, and the needy in time of trouble? Itâs not. Itâs the biggest gambling wheel in the world. It donât look like it, but it is, from the way they figure the percentage on the oo to the look on their face when they cash your chips. You bet that your house will burn down, they bet it wonât, thatâs all. What fools you is that you didnât want your house to burn down when you made the bet, and so you forget itâs a bet. To them, a bet is a bet, and a hedge bet donât look any different than any other bet. But there comes a time, maybe, when you do want your house to burn down, when the money is worth more than the house. And right there is where the trouble starts." âą "Alright, Iâm an agent. Iâm a croupier in that game. I know all their tricks, I lie awake thinking up tricks, so Iâll be ready for them when they come at me. And then one night I think up a trick, and get to thinking I could crook the wheel myself if I could only put a plant out there to put down my bet." âą "I had seen so many houses burned down, so many cars wrecked, so many corpses with blue holes in their temples, so many awful things that people had pulled to crook the wheel, that that stuff didnât seem real to me anymore. If you donât understand that, go to Monte Carlo or some other place where thereâs a big casino, sit at a table, and watch the face of the man that spins the little ivory ball. After youâve watched it a while, ask yourself how much he would care if you went out and plugged yourself in the head. His eyes might drop when he heard the shot, but it wouldnât be from the worry whether you lived or died. It would be to make sure you didnât leave a bet on the table, that he would have to cash for your estate. No, he wouldnât care."
Returning home from the murder, Walter attempted to pray, but was unable to do it. Some time passed and after speaking to Phyllis, he prayed. Aventurine presumably hadnât done the prayer ever since the day of the massacre, and the first time he does it again, he does it with his child self.
âą "I went to the dining room and took a drink. I took another drink. I started mumbling to myself, trying to get so I could talk. I had to have something to mumble. I thought of the Lord's Prayer. I mumbled that, a couple of times. I tried to mumble it another time, and couldn't remember how it went." âą "That night I did something I hadnât done in years. I prayed."
Phyllis in the book is much more inclined towards death than her movie version, even thinking of herself as a personification of death. Sheâs killed ten other people (including infants) prior to the events of the novel. Something to keep in mind as Aventurine had mentioned several times that he attempted to kill himself in the dream, plus his leadup to his âgrandest deathâ. Just like Phyllis, heâs even killed at least a few people before, though the circumstances of that were less on his own volition and more so for the sake of his survival (i.e. the death game in the maze involving the 34 other slaves where he was the winner and another time where he murdered his own master). Instead of Phyllis playing the active role of Death towards everybody else, Aventurine himself dances with Death with every gamble, every time his luck comes into play. Danse Macabre.
âą "But thereâs something in me, I donât know what. Maybe Iâm crazy. But thereâs something in me that loves Death. I think of myself as Death, sometimes." âą "Walter, The time has come. For me to meet my bridegroom [Death]. The only one I ever loved."
Moving on to Ratio:
Walter says several times that itâs hard to get along with Keyes, and how he says nice things after getting you all worked up. A hard-headed man to get along with, but damn good at his job. Sound like someone familiar?
âą "That would be like Keyes, that even when he wanted to say something nice to you, he had to make you sore first."Â âą "It makes your head ache to be around him, but heâs the best claim man on the Coast, and he was the one I was afraid of."
Keyes sees Walter as smarter than half the fools in the company. Ratio can only stand the company of Aventurine in regards to the IPC.
âą "Walter, I'm not beefing with you. I know you said he ought to be investigated. I've got your memo right here on my desk. That's what I wanted to tell you. If other departments of this company would show half the sense that you showâ" âą "Oh, he confessed. He's taking a plea tomorrow morning, and that ends it. But my point is, that if you, just by looking at that man, could have your suspicions, why couldn't theyâ! Oh well, what's the use? I just wanted you to know it."
After going on a rant about the H.S. Nirdlinger case (Phyllisâ husband) and how Norton is doing a horrible job, he ends it by saying that itâs sheer stupidity. âSupreme idiocyâ, anybody?
âą "You canât take many body blows like this and last. Holy smoke. Fifty thousand bucks, and all from dumbness. Just sheer, willful, stupidity!"
Phyllisâ former occupation as a nurse is more elaborated on, including her specialization â pulmonary diseases. One of Ratioâs crowning achievements is curing lithogenesis, the âKing of Diseasesâ.
âą "Sheâs one of the best nurses in the city of Los Angeles. [âŠ] Sheâs a nurse, and she specialized in pulmonary diseases. She would know the time of crisis, almost to a minute, as well as any doctor would."
As for the murder scheme, they talk about it a lot more explicitly in the novel. Specifically, Walter mentions how a single person cannot get away with it and that it requires more people to be involved. How everything is known to the party committing the crime, but not the victim. And most importantly: Audacity.
"Say, this is a beauty, if I do say it myself. I didn't spend all this time in the business for nothing, did I? Listen, he knows all about this policy, and yet he don't know a thing about it. He applies for it, in writing, and yet he don't apply for it. He pays me for it with his own check, and yet he don't pay me. He has an accident happen to him and yet he don't have an accident happen to him. He gets on the train, and yet he don't get on it."
"The first is, help. One person can't get away with it, that is unless they're going to admit it and plead the unwritten law or something. It takes more than one. The second is, the time, the place, the way, all known in advanceâto us, but not him. The third is, audacity. That's the one that all amateur murderers forget. They know the first two, sometimes, but that third, only a professional knows. There comes a time in any murder when the only thing that can see you through is audacity, and I can't tell you why."
"And if we want to get away with it, we've got to do it the way they do it, [âŠ]" "Be bold?" "Be bold. It's the only way."
"I still don't knowâwhat we're going to do." "You'll know. You'll know in plenty of time."
"We were right up with it, the moment of audacity that has to be be part of any successful murder."
It fits the situation that Aventurine and Ratio find themselves in extremely well: For the first pointâ Aventurine would not be able to get away with simply airing out details by himself, as that would immediately cast suspicion on him. Having another person accompany him who not only isnât really a part of the IPC in name (as the IPC and The Family have a strenuous relationship) but would probably be able to get closer to Sunday because of that means they can simply bounce off each other without risking as much suspicion with a one-man army. Which is exactly what Ratio and Aventurine do in the conversations they have on Penacony. Secondly â they knew how Sunday operates: as a control freak, he leaves no stone unturned, which is how he became Head of the Oak Family, so their acting required them to give off the impression that a. they hated each other, b. Ratio would go against Aventurineâs wishes and expose him in return for knowledge, c. there were only the two Cornerstones that were hidden. This would give Sunday the illusion of control, and lead to Sunday to lower his guard long enough for Aventurine to take the gift money in the end. The pair knew this in advance, but not Sunday. And thirdly â the plan hinged on a high-level of risk. From breaking the Aventurine Cornerstone, to hoping that Sunday wouldnât find it in the gift bag, to not telling Ratio what the true plan is (meaning Ratio had to figure it out on his own later on), to Sunday even buying Ratioâs story, it was practically the only way they could go about it. âCharming audacityâ, indeed.
An interesting aspect about the novel is that the ending of the novel is divergent from the movieâs final cut and the original ending: Phyllis and Walter commit suicide during a ferry ride to Mexico. The main reason this was changed for the movie was because of the Hays Code, and they wouldnât allow a double suicide to be screened without reprecussions for criminals. Thereâs also a bunch of other aspects that differentiate the novel from the movie (no narration-confession as the confession happens in a hospital, less characterization for Keyes and instead a bigger focus on Lola and her boyfriend, the focus on the murderous aspect of Walter and Phyllisâ relationship instead of actual romance, Walter falling in love with Lola (with an unfortunately large age gap attached), etc.)
As for the ending, this wouldnât even be the first romance media reference related to Aventurine and Ratio where both the leads die, with the other being The Happy Prince and San Junipero (in relation to the EN-only Heaven Is A Place On Earth reference), which I normally would chalk up as a coincidence, though with the opposite line-of-thought I have going on here (and the fact that itâs three out of four media references where the couple die at the endâŠ), I think itâs reasonable to say that Ratio and Aventurine will get that happy ending. Subverting expectations, hopefully.
â
[THE HAYS CODE â LGBT CENSORSHIP IN CHINA]
Iâve brought up the Hays code twice now in the previous two sections, but I havenât actually explained what exactly it entails.
The Hays Code (also known as the Motion Picture Production Code) is a set of rules and guidelines imposed on all American films from around 1934 to 1968, intended to make films less scandalous, morally acceptable and more âsafeâ for the general audiences. Some of the âDonâtsâ and âBe Carefulsâ include but are not limited toâŠ
(Donât) Pointed profanity
(Donât) Inference of sex perversion (which includes homosexuality)
(Donât) Nudity
(Be Careful) Sympathy for criminals
(Be Careful) Use of firearms
(Be Careful) Man and woman in bed together
What does this have to do with a Chinese gacha game released in 2023? If you know a little bit about miHoYoâs past, you would know that pre-censorship laws being upheld to a much stronger and stricter degree, they had no problem showcasing their gay couples in Guns Girl Z (Honkai Gakuen 2/GGZ) and Honkai Impact 3rd, with the main three being Bronya/Seele, Kiana/Mei (admittedly the latter one is a more recent example, from 2023), and Sakura/Kallen. Ever since the Bronya and Seele kiss, censorship in regards to LGBT content ramped up, causing the kiss to be removed on the CN side, and they had to lay low with the way they present two same-sex characters who are meant to be together. They canât explicitly say that two female or male characters are romantically involved, but they can lace their dynamics with references for those âin the knowâ â Subtext. Just enough to imply something more but not too much that they get censored to hell and back.
So what Iâm getting at is this: The trouble that Double Indemnity had to go through in order to be made while also keeping the dialogue of Phyllis and Neff as flirtatious as they could under the Hays Code among other things is quite similar to the way Ratio and Aventurine are presented as of now. We never see them interact outside of Penacony (at least up until 2.2, when this post was drafted), so we can only infer those interactions specifically until they actually talk without the fear of being found out by Sunday. But, thereâs still some small moments scattered here and there, such as when Aventurine goes near Ratio in the Dewlight Pavilion Sandpit, he exclaims that âthe view here is breathtakingâ (he can only see Ratioâs chest from that distance) and that Ratio could âeasily squash [him] with just a pinchâ. Ratio then goes âIf that is your wish, I will do so without a momentâs hesitation.â Not to mention the (in)famous âDoctor, youâre huge!â quote.
Itâs not a coincidence that Ratio and Aventurine have three explicit references to romance media (Double Indemnity, Spellbound, Oscar Wildeâs The Happy Prince), possibly even four if you take the EN-only Heaven Is A Place On Earth as a reference to Black Mirrorâs San Junipero. Itâs not a coincidence that the storylines or characters of said references parallel the pairing, from surface-level to deep cuts. Itâs not a coincidence that the CN voice actors were asked to âtone it downâ by the voice director when it came to their chemistry. Itâs not a coincidence that Aventurine has only flirted with (three) men throughout Penacony, even referring to a Bloodhound NPC as a âhunk of a manâ inside his thoughts, all the while ignoring Himeko and Robin when it came to their looks â women who are known across the cosmos with a myriad of adoring fans. There are so many other so-called âcoincidencesâ related to the two that you could make an iceberg just based on versions 2.0-2.2 as well as content miHoYo themselves have put out on social media. They absolutely knew what they were doing, and were trying to get their point across through subtle means â the extent they went to with the Double Indemnity reference while also keeping it under wraps from a âsurfaceâ level point of view is proof of this â the implications are there if you take the time to look for them, and are simply hard to ignore or deny once you do find them.
â
[CONCLUSION]
This was supposed to be short considering the other analyses Iâve seen were also pretty short in comparison, but I couldnât get the movie out of my head and ended up getting carried away in the brainrot. I hope you could follow along with my line of thinking, even with the absurd length of this post, and the thirty-image limit. I tried to supplement context with some links to videos and wiki pages among other sources wherever I can to get around it.
I will end it with this though â the love in the movie turned out to be fake and a farce, going off track from what was a passionate romance in the beginning because of the murder scheme. Meanwhile, the whole reason why Ratio and Aventurine can pull off whatever they want is because of their immense trust in one another. What was initially shown to be distrust in the Final Victor LC grew into something more, for Ratio, someone who would have never put faith into mere chance and probability before this, put his trust in Aventurine, of all people.
TL;DR â (I get it, itâs over ten thousand words.)
Not only is the relationship between Neff and Phyllis represented in the deception and acting side of Ratio and Aventurine, but the real and trusting side is shown in Neff and Keyes. They have a fascinating, multi-layered dynamic that is extremely fun to pick apart once you realise whatâs going on underneath the bickering and âhatredâ they display.
Many thanks to Manya again for making the original thread on the movie. I wouldnât be here comparing the game and movie myself if it werenât for that.
By the way, I really do believe that Shaoji totally watched this movie at least once and really wanted that Double Indemnity AU for his OCs. I know exactly how it feels.
â
Other points I'd like to mention that didn't fit anywhere else in the main analysis and/or donât hold much significance, have nothing to do with the Penacony mission, or may even be considered reaching (...if some of the other points werenât). Just some potentially interesting side bits.
Phyllis honks three times to signal Neff to go for the kill. That, and the three gunshots in the confrontation. Aventurine is all about the number three.
The height difference Aventurine and Ratio have going on is close to Phyllis and Neffâs.
Phyllis had killed her husbandâs previous wife and went on to marry Mr. Dietrichson, pretty much taking the wifeâs place. Aventurine killed his previous master, and had taken certain attributes from him like his wristwatch and the rings on his hand and the âall or nothingâ mantra.
When calling Ratio a wretch (bastard), Aventurine smiles for a moment. This is exclusive to the EN, KR and JP voiceovers, as in CN, he does not smile at all. (Most definitely a quirk from the AI they use for lip syncing, but the smile is something thatâs been pointed out quite a few times so I thought Iâd mention it here.)
Sunday specifically says in the CN version that he knew of Aventurine's plans the moment Aventurine left the mansion, meaning that he realized he had been played the fool the moment Ratio and Aventurine talked in Golden Hour
In the description for the "All or Nothing" consumable, teenage Aventurine says this specific line: "Temptation is a virtue for mortals, whereas hesitation proves to be a fatal flaw for gamblers." According to Ratio, this is Aventurine's motto - he says as such in Aventurine's Keeping Up With Star Rail episode. Note that in the anan interview he explicitly says he does not have a motto, and yet Ratio in the video says otherwise. They definitely have to know each other for a while for Ratio to even know this.
A big reason why Neff even pulled off the murder scheme in the first place was because he wanted to see if his good friend Keyes could figure it out, the Mundane Troubles Trailblaze Continuance showcases Ratio attempting to teach the Herta Space Station researches a lesson to not trust the Genius society as much as they did.
In Keyesâ first scene heâs exposing a worker for writing a policy on his truck that he claimed had burnt down on its own, when he was the one who burnt it down. Ratio gets into an Ace Attorney-style argument with the Trailblazer in Mundane Troubles.
Neff talks repeatedly about how it wonât be sloppy. Nothing weak. And how itâll be perfect to Phyllis, and how sheâs going to do it and heâs going to help her. Doing it right â âstraight down the lineâ. Beautifully ironic, considering what happens in the movie, and even more ironic as Ratio and Aventurineâs scheme went exactly the way they wanted to in the end. Straight down the line.

do you ship helena bertinelli with anyone? if yes, then which characters and why? what's your favorite helena ship? do you have any helena rarepairs? (i know you've talked about helena/steph and you're so right about it, it's a very interesting ship)
!!!! i have so many ships for my best girl ever yes oh my god thank you for asking.
my top pairing is probably Vic Sage/the Question. Vic is the basic answer, but man. i love them so much. no couple has matched each other's freak like that have. Justice League Unlimited is a great adaptation of Helena in general, but it also did a great adaptation of Helena and Vic's relationship. how he just dedicates himself to helping her with no expected return, but also wants to make sure she doesn't go too far in a hunt for vengeance that never ends for her. i think a lot of characters often want to change Helena or expect things out of her for their own needs, like the Batfam and the BoP. but Vic is one of the few people who just wants her to be better for her own good. when he tries to stop her from killing it's not because of his morals, it's because he doesn't want this crusade to consume her. and i just. man i think about them a lot. Helena rlly likes weird little men who give themselves wholly to her.
Zinda Blake/Lady Blackhawk is also a top ship for me. tbh i just like Zinda. but i do love how Helena and Zinda interact, being the more rough and tumble members of the BoP. they're both outsiders, in different ways. Helena is an outsider of the Batfam and Zinda is literally from a different time and an outsider to the current world. their friendship is so genuine and i think if Babs and Dinah can have. whatever homoerotic nonsense going on during BoP, then Zinda and Helena deserve some homoerotic nonsense too. as a treat.
if we're willing to count New-52 Helena, then i enjoy Helena/Dick/Tiger. i think Helena and Dick being a past relationship is really important in pre-Flashpoint for Helena's development, though i don't ship them as a serious couple beyond a fling. but in the New-52, i think this throuple be fun. Helena and Tiger respect each other as two very driven, no-nonsense agents and then well. they both clearly have some kind of thing for Dick. so it's fun finding the balance of how they could all work together romantically.
and ofc. it's a crime to mention Helena ships and not mention Renee Montoya/the Question. every time they interact it's really fucking gay. it's so gay that Kate Kane, Renee's own ex, assumed Helena and Renee were gay. i cannot be convinced against this ship. i genuinely think this ship should be canon. i mean. DC did tease us with this moment from an alternate universe and it's lived rent for me since. fucking criminal for us to only get one panel of what we could have if DC let Helena be a fruit in the main universe. being in love with Helena Bertinelli should be a right of passage for the Question mantle, i personally believe. if you asked me like. genuinely who i want to see Helena date in the current comics, Renee is my top pick. (i would say Vic but he's fucking dead and the New-52 butchered him so rip my mans-)
lois lane (2019) #10
besides those ships, just about every ship for Helena probably falls into the category of rarepair. like you said i've talked about my love for Helena/Steph before bc god. i think it should be a thing more people ship. once i finish the fic i'm writing about them i will convince others to like it.
i also think Helena/Cass could be fun. in a *lot* of ways Helena and Cass are narrative parallels to each other. Helena was a victim of her family being murdered at about the same age Cass was forced to be a murderer. Helena grows up to believe in lethal justice because of this, and Cass grows up to be staunchly against it. Cass' Batgirl suit was made *by* Helena. they both want to be protectors of the most vulnerable people. they balance each other out in a lot of ways and i think they should kiss about it.
also probably a rarepair, i think Helena/Lady Shiva is fun. their fight during Birds of Prey (2010) had... questionable moments for Helena's characterization, but i do love so much that Helena knocks Shiva off her feet and gains a deep respect from Shiva. like. Shiva gives her a nickname and shows her admiration. i would like to see fanfic where Shiva continues to be weirdly admirable of Helena and bothering her non-stop. they could be a fun fucked up toxic yuri moment. this is just. so gay to me.
birds of prey (2010) #6
my most rare Helena pair would probably be Helena Wayne, actually. but specifically Helena Wayne of JSA (2022). ever since, for some reason, it was made canon that the current Helena Wayne was named after Helena Bertinelli and took the name Huntress to honor her i *cannot* stop thinking about them meeting. because in-universe it makes *no* fucking sense for Bruce to name his kid after *Helena Bertinelli*, someone he's regularly at odds with and doesn't like. it's clearly an awkward explanation to try to make the whole two Huntress situation make sense. (it's almost as bad as Helena Wayne in the New-52 using Helena Bertinelli as an alias.) but because it's such an odd choice, i do think it could be fun for Helena Wayne, when she's back in time to see Bruce, to find Helena Bertinelli to get to know the woman she was named after and Helena Bertinelli just being. baffled by the idea of *Batman* naming his kid after her. it could be a fun fucked up moment.
my other super rarepair is Kara Zor-L/Power Girl. they had like. one meaningful interaction of JSA Classified and it's been PLAGUING me. something about when Power Girl doesn't remember her past and she's seeking a friend, she instinctively goes to find Huntress? but it's wrong bc this isn't *her* Huntress and neither of them understand why Power Girl would seek Helena out? god it's so good. i'm always a big fan of ships where one person in the ship is *so* obviously using the other person as a replacement for someone they lost and they both know it. it's such a doomed angsty thing where you could play with Helena actually really liking Kara, but knowing that she's just a replacement for Kara's Helena Wayne. good fucked up shit man.
and lastly: i really ship her with Dawn Granger/Dove. there's no canon basis for this, they didn't have a ton of interactions even when they were both on the BoP. but there's a very kind innocence to Dawn that contrasts Helena's violence really well. and i do love a ship with a corruption kink vibe to it. let Helena corrupt Dawn. i could write such fucked up porn about these two.
#necrotic answerings#helena bertinelli#idk the ship names for most of these ships so idk how to tag them#most of them are too rare to have ship names. tragic.#anyway i ship her with so many ppl#i do ship her with tim as well but i didn't mention him just bc i default to viewing them platonically.#also think babs is a valid ship for her. but in a hatefucking way.#i prefer their relationship when they can't stand each other it's more fun.#but yeah the realistic âi want to see this in canonâ options are vic and renee#and then the rest are âi'm alone in this ship but i see potentialâ rarepairs#esp lady shiva. like i'm *really* tempted to write that fic.#i just need to read more comics with shiva.#actually the most fucked up option: cass/helena/shiva incestual threesome.#that has potential. but i don't think anyone shares my vision#also i've seen posts arguing for helena/jason#and while. longterm i disagree. i do think them sleeping together is on the table.#but largely ppl always bringing him up when talking about her sours me to that ship. so eh.#also i would ship helena/bruce in a fucked up way if that one batman: the brave & the bold episode didn't piss me off so bad#justice league unlimited is the *only* good adaptation of helena i'm so serious.#everything else eats ass with her. esp the arrowverse.#and the birds of prey movie.#but jlu does good by her and if you just watch that show you do have a solid grasp of her character#it adapts her story into a child-friendly medium in what i think is the best way it could've#anywhore thank you for this ask <3#you actually sent this when something rlly shitty happened so it was a nice little distraction from life to think about my answer#OH WAIT YOU KNOW WHO I FORGOT.#kate spencer. manhunter. I ship her with helena too.#lethal female vigilantes unite.#BRO those two deserve a teamup mini or something. they'd click so well.#dc hire me to write a huntress/manhunter mini series i promise i won't make them gay (my fingers are crossed)

Personal Space
Bradley âRoosterâ Bradshaw x reader
Summary: you love your personal space. Unfortunately, Bradley also loves your personal space.
Pt. 2
You never understood why Bradley stuck around. Since the academy youâd preferred to stick to yourself; get your head down and get the job done. Especially with a surname like Mitchell. You didnât want your father and grandfatherâs reputation to negatively proceed you, and by the time people had put two and two together as to whom loins you came from: youâd made your own reputation so Maverick never made much of a difference to it.
But still, having dinner in the mess youâd sat down, when someone came and thudded down next to you and began eating themselves. âIâm Bradleyâ he said when you finally looked up at him. You raised a brow âBradshaw?â You ask and he nods: you recognise him from the photos your dad pinned up in your twoâs hanger. You hum âand you are?â He asks ânot important.â You reply, deciding youâd lost your appetite and stood to clear your plate âgood talk!â Bradley said, but you were already walking away.
Heâd next encountered you when you were running around the academy, early morning; before any naval training would take place. He hummed and decided it was perfectly acceptable to interrupt your jaunt with his presence. âHey! Up so early?â He asks as he tries to match your pace from a standstill âcould ask you the same.â You reply bluntly âwell I wanted to get a run in before-â âwell thereâs your answer.â You reply, cutting him off. âYou run really quick.â He says as you try to keep your pace increasing to shake him off âgoodbye, Bradshaw.â You say, pulling your sunglasses over your eyes and taking off at a pace he couldnât sustain. He just stops and shakes his head smiling, you were funny.
Eventually, youâd both gotten up in the air and were quick to earn your callsigns âRoosterâ and âHenâ. Bradley earned his because he was up before the chickens, youâd earned yours because the chicken kept fucking following you around like you were his mother. You were sat on the aircraft carrier, your trainee group learning how to land on a ship deck and youâd finally gotten a moment of peace that evening. You sat on the edge of the deck, feet dangling over the edge as you watched the sunset, not moving when you hear someone slip into the space between the barriers beside you.
âOh look my chick is back.â You mumble sarcastically and Bradley laughs loudly at you. âYou love me reallyâ he says, looking at you as if he wanted to you agree with him âyou seem to keep telling yourself that, donât you?â You hum, turning to watch the sea lap against the grey metal. You can feel him fidgeting beside you, as if antsy to say something. âWhat?â You ask, finally turning to look at him. âWhat?â He repeats, looking at you with raised brows âyou want to ask me something. Youâre fidgeting.â You point out âso ask me or fuck offâ you say, turning away again. âYour last name is Mitchellâ he says and you roll your eyes âyou can read and hear. Two things Iâve learnt today.â You huff, again, with sarcasm. âAre you related to Pete Mitchell?â He asks, looking at you and nearly holding his breath âyou finally put two and two together?â You ask and he lets out the breath.
âYeah, heâs my dad.â You say after a while âI was a whoopsie baby my mother didnât want anything to do withâ you tell him. âHe used to fly with my dad.â Bradley almost whispers, voice just a few octaves above. âI knowâ you nod âheâs practically wallpapered all over our hanger.â You say âso are youâ you eye him. âHe pulled my papersâ he says, again after a few moments of silence âI knowâ you say âdo you know why?â He asks âyes.â You reply, and he could tell you werenât going to elaborate. âYâknow Iâm not a fan of your dad, but I really like you.â He says and you just look at him with a blank face. âYupâ you hum to yourself and he raises a brow âjust as Mother Goose was describedâ you say, and Bradleyâs face immediately lights up with a huge grin, stretching and arm around you and pulling you into his side.
âGet off me.â âYup, yep, sorry.â
For your first deployment, the academy set it up that youâd at least be with one person from your training squadron, and today the list of names were coming out; they were scribbled on the back of a napkin and pinned to a notice board.
â1. Haywood & Solomons, 2. Hughes & Shelley & Omaha, 3. Cooper & Parker & Cromwell & Smith, 4. Bradshaw,â you crossed your fingers as someone read out the names, then yours was read alongside Bradleyâs âoh for godâs sakeâ you grumble, turning to see Bradley practically jumping for joy. âThis is great! Me and you, Hen!â Rooster cheers and you just stare at him âshouldâve called you leech cause youâre acting like one. Calm down.â You instruct and he tries to chill out, but the cheeky smile on his face was indiminishagble.
He only became more unbearable then, with you every working hour, your wingman on the missions youâd fly, inseparable despite your complaints. âWhereâs your boyfriend?â Hawk asked you, as he came to sit with you for lunch. You shush him loudly. âWoah woah I only asked where he was.â âSpeak his name and he shows up. Iâm trying to hide.â you say in a hushed voice âplus he isnât my boyfriendâ âsureâ he scoffs but the daggers being shot into his head silenced him easily.
âHey Hen! Hawkâ Bradley greets as he sits down. You grunt and point an accusatory finger at Hawk âthis is your fault, jackassâ you say and he laughs at you, him and Bradley engage in conversation as you just eat, having learnt the skill of drowning him out. âWhat about you, Hen?â Hawk asked, drawing your attention away from your plate and up to the two men alongside you, you raise an eyebrow - letting them know you were insinuating that you werenât listening to their conversation.
âDo you want a family?â He ask and you just nod âreally?â Hawk asks âthatâs cute, didnât take you for a family galâ he jokes and you harshly kick his leg under the table âkids and everything?â He asks after the pain subsides. âYup.â You say and Bradley hums âI didnât know thatâ he says and you just look at him âyou never asked.â You reply simply, and that was true: he hadnât. He was quite prepared to spend the rest of existence chasing after you, whether that meant giving you your first kiss on your deathbeds.
The two of you even went to Top Gun together, training to be the finest naval aviators of them all. And boy, you two fought to be the best; tongue and teeth, blood sweat and tears, everything. The decision came down to one final dogfight. âMay the best aviator winâ Rooster jokes, sticking out a hand to you. You eye it and internally question if you were insane, before leaning up to peck his cheek. âPrepare to loose, chicken.â You say, leaving him frozen in his place while you head to your plane. That day, Bradley was seriously off his A-game, and you came out on top.
A Mitchell finally Top Gun.
âCongratulations!â Bradley says excitedly on graduation day when you victoriously lifted the trophy above your head. You turned to him and he leant down slightly - you werenât stupid, you knew what he was intending to do. âThank you, Brad.â You say, turning to walk over to where your father was stood - knowing that was probably the only time Bradley wouldnât follow you. That was the first time youâd ever called him anything short of Bradley Bradshaw.
âIâm so proud of you honeyâ your dad says, hugging you tightly and you embrace him back, smiling widely âthank you, dadâ you respond and he looks behind you where Bradley was stood a while back, watching the ordeal. âIs that-â âyesâ you tell him and your dad just looks at you âI wouldnât get all teary he follows me like a lost puppyâ you grumble but he just grins âheâs a good kid, hon.â He says and you shake your head âheâs definitely somethingâ
âSo how does their relationship work?â Bob asks Hangman, watching Bradley talk your ear off and you just staring ahead into space, blankly. âYou see Bobby my boy,â Jake begins âHen loves her personal spaceâ Bob nods âRooster also loves Henâs personal space.â Bob nods again, now understanding. âHavenât they done everything together though?â He asks âI think itâs more the fact that Hen does something and Rooster just kinda goes with itâ Phoenix said and Bob hums, as Bradley continues to converse one-sidedly with you.
âHe means wellâ you hear from beside you as you stare out from the hanger, turning to see your honorary uncle Tom walking towards you, you run towards him as he embraces you tightly âhey Iceâ you smile, sweetly. âHey sweetheartâ he croaks. âI mean what I said.â He states and you raise a brow âhe means wellâ he nods towards the man doing his required push ups on the ground with Hondo. âI know, Ice.â You tell him. âNo, I donât think you doâ he hums and you raise your eyebrows at him. âThe kids in love with you. Youâve either got to let him in or tell him to get out.â He says, âyouâre living together for goodness sakeâ. âIt was cheaperâ you argue âwe both know the accommodation is subsidised.â He states, matter-of-factly, patting your shoulder as he turns to go talk to your dad when he walks into the room.
It was true, you and Bradley were sharing accommodation. âHey Hen, theyâve offered us shared accommodation back in Miramarâ Bradley says, coming over with a pamphlet. âWhy?â You ask, taking it out of his hands. âMarried couple accommodationâ it states and you raise your brows âyou getting ahead of yourself, Bradshaw?â You ask and he shakes his head âthe guy assumed our callsigns were cause weâre a coupleâ he tells you and you just hum. âWell Iâd rather stay there than in an apartment.â You say simply, giving him back the leaflet and refocusing on the plane you were working on repairing. âSeriously?â He asks, voice overly hopeful. You look at him and shrug âjust go get the damn house, Bradshaw. Before I change my mind!â You say and he grins, turning and breaking out into almost a jog to head to confirm your living situation.
You take a moment of hesitation, before loudly groaning and heading out onto the tarmac, getting down and doing push ups alongside Rooster. He turns his head and looks at you and you just raise your brows at him. âHey honeyâ he grins âhello Bradleyâ he nudges your hip with his own. âIâll drive us home.â You tell him, and he raises his eyebrows âHome?â He asks and you huff âokay, Bradley I will drive the two of us back to our shared accommodation that we accidentally got given.â You say and he laughs loudly âhome sounded better.â
Then after the mission, the whole Dagger squad got permanently stationed in San Diego, other than deployment, so they urged the new additions to the base to buy their own properties closer to base rather than on it. You and Bradley were sat in the Hard Deck, a long time before it was open, the rest of the Daggers spending time on the beach while the two of you were scouring Bradleyâs laptop for a property. Well, Bradley was.
How about this one? He turns his screen to you. You shake your head âI want grass in the garden. I want to plant flowersâ you say as you point at the paved back of the house, explaining that itâs a waste of money to have it ripped out. Bradley nods âMkay, gardenâ he says, moving back to look again.
âHow about this one? Beach front, close to the running track for you. Only a walk from the Hard Deck. White picket fence, reallyâ he hums, turning the laptop again âgarden?â You ask and he nods âgarden.â He nods with a grin. âShall we go look?â You ask and he raises a brow at you. âYou said itâs a walk from the hard deck. Letâs go.â You say, putting the address into your phone and immediately recognising the street name, Bradley quickly falling into step with you as you walk towards the property.
You look at it and place your hands on your hips. Bradley was right. Pretty damn perfect. âCan I help you?â A lady asks, walking outside of the house, clipboard in hand. âOh no, weâd just seen this property online and wanted to take a look.â Bradley tells her. âWell Iâve had a no-show on a viewing. Howâd you like to take a look?â She suggests, motioning to the open door. âOkayâ you nod, following her into the house.
âObviously the kitchen, living room, even a deck out back with a huge garden and high fencesâ she says nodding out the window and you hum. âOut the side thereâs an entrance straight to the beachâ she motions, then starts heading up the stairs âthree bedrooms, attic space, bathroomâ she says âIâm guessing itâs just you two at the moment?â She asks âoh weâre not-â Bradley begins âyes, just us.â You confirm, shutting him up. âOkay, so thereâs a large room for your bed and then if any new additions are to join, you have the space for themâ she smiles and leads you back out front.
âItâs not cheap, itâs California. So I understand if youâre not prepared to pay that much money, do you mind me asking what you do?â She asks âweâre naval aviators.â Bradley says âstationed here?â She asks and you both nod âah! I get why youâre looking for a property here!â She says and Bradley looks at you. âI really like it, Roo.â You say, and Bradley has to stop his jaw hitting the floor at your nickname. âItâs your call, honeyâ he says and you look at the lady and smile as she offers her hand âweâll take it.â
âHow shall we split the payment?â You ask Bradley as you walk back to the Hard Deck after organising a meeting with the realtor to actually finalise all the kinks and bumps. âI donât mind doing the down payment then weâll take it in turn paying the loanâ he suggests âwe can get a joint bank account and do it that wayâ you say and he agrees as you settle back into your seats at the Hard Deck. âWhereâve you two been?â Hangman asks âwe bought a house.â
One evening, after you were all moved in and were hanging out at the Hard Deck after a long day or routine flying, you were sat outside with Rooster; watching the sunset. âWhen are we getting married then?â You ask and he spits out his beer âwhat?â He asks, eyes wide and getting progressively more giddy. âWell we live together, we have a joint bank account, and Jake keeps telling me weâre practically married. So when are we getting married?â You ask as he hugs you tightly âwhenever you want, babyâ he says, kissing the top of your head and pulling a ring out of his pocket to get on his knee. âWill you marry me?â He asks and you raise a brow âdidnât I just say that?â You ask bluntly âjust say yes, pleaseâ he begs and you nod âyes. Yes I will marry you, Bradley Bradshaw.â You confirm as he kisses your lips gently.
âOkay get off of me now.â

Dead Silent. One of the batfam ask Danny why heâs more clingy than his siblings and Danny just goes âhuh??â Cuz heâs probably the LEAST clingy. Dan is Yandere Levels of clingy, Jazz is Ride or Die clingy, Dani is probably Stalker clingy, and donât even get him started on their parents.
Danny, by comparison, is the normal one and I feel like that should be appreciated so much more.
(This is SO freaking funny and you're so right omg. It got long bc I got excited again lmaooo)
"You... you think I'm... clingy?!" Danny cried in shock, looking around for a camera. Were they serious? Was this actually real?
Duke said with a shrug, "Well... I mean, I always see you around Cass. We're just asking."
"I am literally the least clingy and the most normal out of my siblings."
Jason snorted from where he stood behind Tim's chair. Everyone was listening in but only Damian and Duke had the graciousness to not pretend that they weren't. Even Cass was staring, blinking as she was held in Danny's arms for a cuddle after the patrol.
"Oh yeah? Prove it."
Danny glared at him and pointed to his shadow, which stretched out beneath him from the Batcave's lights.
"One, the only reason she doesn't follow you around everywhere is because Jazz literally has Shadow following you whenever you go out." As he said this, two eyes blinked from within Jason's shadow and then disappeared just as quickly. "Two, she had all of your medical information on a file in her phone! And just information on you, period! Three, just yesterday, she blew up two ships and took down a trafficking ring by herself because she got reports that they put a hit on you! And don't even talk about how normal she is compared to me, because she definitely isn't! You just think she's a normal amount of clingy because the both of you have your brains rotted from romance novels!"
Jason made a face. It was one of great affront, grudging acceptance, and a wistful adoration. Danny couldn't even feel smug for proving him right because the look on his face was just disgusting.
Cass giggled from within his arms.
Dick opened his mouth and Danny pointed at him aggressively, clutching at Cass as he said, "You can't speak either! Dan is literally the most clingy out of all of us! You know what Jazz said?! He literally has abandonment issues and codependency!! Y'know what his name was before we came here?! It's "World Destroyer"! The only reason he hasn't done anything is because he really likes you and wants to spend most of his time watching you and keeping you safe instead of going around and causing destruction!"
Dick blinked. "But he alsoâ"
"Wrong! He uses clones to do stuff while he keeps watch over you, and you're the only reason he has a moral code at all."
Dick made a considering face and then he smiled. "Aww, that's kinda cute. I didn't know he was so clingy."
Danny muttered to Cass, "Are you seeing this bullshit?"
She giggled again and patted at his arms that were wrapped around her neck.
Duke nodded, amusement on his face. "I see your point. But what about Dani? You're definitely clingier than her."
Danny made an error noise. "Nope! The entire Young Justice is codependent and clingy, so it just looks normal. And Dani just follows around Kon and Tim in intervals so you can't see either of them." He also grimaced at Tim, who was still working at the computer. "And Tim is already watching them, aren't you? You three are a bunch of freaks."
Tim looked up with a small smirk, much to Damian's audible disgust. "You got me there. I keep trackers and cameras on all of them. And Dani's usually just invisible."
Danny smiled triumphantly. "Hah! See? I'm the least clingy!"
There were murmurs of agreement and then Duke said, "I don't know, I think all four of you are clingy and weird."
Danny sulked. "No I'm not."
Duke gestured to all of him. "You're literally climbing Cass like a koala."
Okay, so his legs were wrapped around her waist and he was hanging onto her like a sticker, but so what? She didn't mind!
Cass snickered and said, "It's okay. He's light."
"Yeah, I'm light," grumbled Danny as he squeezed her.
Duke and Damian shared a look, as Duke said, "We should get out of here. Thank god these freaks are taken."
"Agreed. Thank goodness we are the most normal."
Now there were cries of outrage throughout the entire cave all over again.

âĄâžâž "it's hard being casual when my favorite bra lives in your dresser"
âââ ââ
ââ
â ââ
âWhose bra is this?â
Drewâs eyes dart to the source, feeling wary. Who else could be in his room right now?
Oh right. The girl he met last night. Sheâs wearing his t-shirt like itâs his, rummaging through his dresser. She turns around holding a red bra. Your red bra.Â
Drew raises an eyebrow, looking at the girl skeptically. Whatâs her name again? He honestly has no idea, and isnât planning on remembering. âI..I thought you left.â
âLetâs grab breakfast together,â she happily chirps, before returning to the bra in her hands, holding it as if it contained some deadly disease. âNow, whoâs bra is this?â
Drew doesnât reply; and the girl adds on, âis it the girl you moaned out last night?âÂ
Drew cocks his head to the side. What is this bitch on, he thinks. He sends her a smile that doesnât reach his eyes, walks over, and snatches the bra out of her hands. He tugs it back in his dresser, pushing it close. âYou should leave.â
He turns around and sees the graphic design that's on the shirt the girl's currently wearing. Thatâs the shirt you got him. One of his favorite. âUm, leave the shirt here.âÂ
Itâs the girlâs turn to look at him skeptically. âWhat?â
âYeah, uh, leave the shirt here, and forget this ever happened, alright?âÂ
Drew throws his towel over his gaming chair, and grabs his sweatpants. He puts it on, ignoring the shocked expression on her face. He lays down on his bed, picks up his phone, and starts scrolling through his messages.Â
When she realizes that he doesnât give a shit, she angrily takes the t-shirt off, throwing it into his face. âThanks,â Drew says rather sourly, putting it to the side. She puts on her dress from last night, grabbing any remaining clothing around the place.Â
âWe have class together, you dick!â She yells, as if that would make Drew care.Â
He hums, obviously too focused on his phone. Only the slam of his room door makes him slightly flinch, but even so, his eyes go back to his phone.
Now, what was he so focused on? Well, texting you.Â
ââ
Iâm at the soccer field
This simple text was enough to get Drew out of his dorm, walking as fast as he could to go see you.Â
A smile on his lips that appear on its own, just from seeing you sit on the bleachers, watching the soccer team practice. Or more, get yelled at by their coach.Â
You donât even notice him sit down beside you; too engrossed in the music coming from your AirPods.Â
Itâs when he takes one AirPod out of your ear, when you finally notice him. âHey,â he breathes out, putting the AirPod into his own ear.
âHi,â you smile, your eyes landing on his shirt. Oh. Heâs wearing the shirt you got him as a gift a few months ago, for Christmas. He wears it quite often, but every time you see it on him, warmth still fills your stomach. âNice shirt, handsome.â
âReally?â He nudges your knee with his. âAn amazing girl got me this.â
He says stuff like this; that makes you wonder if itâs still casual.Â
âInteresting,â you lean in closer to him, your eyes glancing down at his lips and then at his eyes. You havenât seen him in almost two weeks; due to spring break. Mentally, you were glad to be away from Drew, to clear your mind a bit. Physically? Well, letâs just say sexting was not as satisfying as the real thing.Â
âWhat song is this again?â He suddenly asks, smiling fondly at you. You get ready to answer, but Drew beats you to it, replying to his own question. âThe Smiths, right?âÂ
You mimic the ding noise, making him chuckle under his breath. âYou know me so well,â you say, bit of sarcasm in your voice. Duh, he knows a lot about you; casual for more than five months at this point.
âOf course.â heâs smiling ear to ear.Â
You roll your eyes at his response, but feel your own smile growing. You lean down against his shoulder, looking out onto the field. The weight of looking into his eyes was getting heavy.Â
Itâs quiet for a few seconds, until you speak up.Â
âThat guy has been yelled at by the coach ten times already.â
You feel Drewâs chest vibrate against you, his laughter erupting softly. âTen times? What a retard.â
You chuckle softly, only because Drew finds it funny. âBut the coach was being a meanie.â
The said guy has the ball now, and when he attempts to score it in, he misses and falls onto the ground. That causes the coach to yell at him again. âWell, eleventh time,â Drew adds on.Â
âNext Fifa champion,â you add on. Drew laughs again, as if that joke was the funniest thing heâs ever heard. You pull away from leaning on his shoulder, and stare at his smile. âWas it that funny?â You ask.Â
He turns his head over to you, the smile still there. Or more like, ever since he sat down, his lips were always curled up. âYou should be a comedian.â
That makes you laugh, and you push his shoulder, ânonsense.â
Your laughter dies down when you see how smitten his stare on you is.Â
His eyes glance down at your lips, then back to your eyes, âI missed you.â
Casual, casual, casual.
âYou did?â You cock your head to the side flirtatiously. Part of you thought it was fun to flirt with Drew; to hear the nice things he has to say about you. The other part of you hated how sweet Drew was with you; when the two of you were just âcasuallyâ sleeping together.Â
âThink Iâve already said that over text though,â his voice drops low, and he starts to lean close to you. The look on his face says it all; he wants to kiss you.
âFlatter me and tell me in person too, wonât you?â You continue to say, a smirk on your lips.Â
He leans forward and kisses your cheek gently, âhow âbout I show you instead?â
Oh. Oh. The butterflies are throwing up in your stomach right now, because of this manâs sly mouth. How he just casually brings up wanting to have sex with you, within minutes of seeing each other.Â
Seems like he really does miss you.Â
Casual, casual, casual.Â
âHow is one suppose to refuse to that?â
âHmm,â he hums, and his eyes glued to your lips tell you everything; his mind is already elsewhere, imagining the most dirty things to do with you. Or, what heâs going to do with you.Â
He leans in, this time, kissing you on the lips. His tongue meets yours hungrily and lustfully, exploring every corner. He kisses you as if itâs the only way for him to breathe, only way for him to live on.Â
You hate that; yet you kiss him back with the same eagerness.Â
Make-out session at the bleachers? How romantic. How sweet. How casual.Â
You pull away, feeling breathless from how good his kisses are. And you too realize that you missed him too, something you donât want to admit. Because, who misses someone you only see casually? Thatâs weird.
His eyes are still glued to your lips, and you see a small trail of saliva near the corner of it. You chuckle softly, wiping it off with your thumb. âYou knowâŠâ
He hums yet again, even though you havenât even gotten to the main point of your sentence. ââŠI got a gift for youâŠ.in my room,â you manage to breathe out, and he kisses your jaw.Â
Aka, letâs go have sex in my room, right now.Â
âHow lovely,â he smiles against your neck, planting a kiss there.Â
âYou wanna see it?â You run your hands through his hair, down his nape, fingertips scratching it lightly. That makes him bury himself deeper into your neck, his arms wrapping around you.
âYes please.â
ââ
The moment you unlocked your room, Drew rushes you inside, until you land on the soft cushions of your couch.Â
You giggle, watching him take his top off, his legs on either side of you, caging you onto the couch. âShould I continue my story or no?â
âMmm, lemme guess,â Drew remains eye contact with you, but his hands focus on undoing the zipper of your shorts. âEveryone got food poisoning, just because of you.â
You lift your hips, him pulling your shorts down, âeveryone was rushed into the ER.â
Drew laughs, ushering you to sit up. He pulls your top over your head, leaving you only in your bra and underwear. âAnd still you insist on cooking for me.â
âOnly because you always ask to stay in,â you reply, wrapping your arms around his neck. âMaking me improvise on dinner.â
âMmhm,â he stares down at your lips, distracted like always. He kisses you sloppily, his hands running along your back. You moan into his mouth, as he pushes you down onto the pillows.Â
âI miss you,â he murmurs, his lips trailing down your neck, sucking gently on the area around there;
The angel on your shoulder likes the sweet things he says; the devil on the other side likes to doubt his every word, repeating the phrase in your ear:
Casual, casual, casual.Â
One hand kneads your thigh, the other pinning your waist to the couch. His lips move onto your breasts, where they skillfully move around the bra. He wraps his lips around your nipples, making you gasp in pleasure.Â
But the bra starts to feel itchy, which you breathe out, âjust take it off.â
He smirks against your nipples, pulling away just to unclip your bra. You help him, pushing the bra off, discarding it on the floor. He leans down again, this time, sucking on the other breast.Â
âFuck..â You moan, as he stops, trailing his lips down your stomach. He leaves soft kisses along your belly button, his fingers working with pulling your underwear down.Â
âMissed you.âÂ
This time, he says it while looking down at your pussy.Â
The air hits your wet pussy, soon cut off by Drewâs warm palm.Â
âWet already,â he chuckles, his fingers playing with your folds. Too consumed with lust, you donât even reply to that comment.Â
He sticks two fingers into you, thrusting in a slow pace. âYouâre tight,â he breathes out, kissing your neck.Â
You wrap your arms around his neck lazily, âhavenât seen you in forever.â
âForever, huh?â
âCâmon, donât act like its not the same for you-â he adds the third finger, cutting off your sentence. You moan loudly, as he starts to move in a faster pace. Swear, you can cum just on his fingers alone.Â
He smiles against your face, and kisses your ear. Occasionally, he grunts, trying to stretch you out as much as he can.Â
Okay. Maybe you could cum on his fingers alone, but it wouldnât be as good as the real thing. âI want you,â you manage to say between moans, his fingers working hard on your pussy.Â
He kisses your forehead, âgood to know.â
What a teasing prick. You squeeze his bicep, hoping he gets the message. Itâs not easy to talk when heâs got his fingers deep in you. You give him a lazy glare; and he just laughs, âIâknow.â
He pulls out of you, and you immediately clench around nothing, your folds missing Drew. He gets entirely off of you, and walks into your bedroom.
Drew knew where you kept the condoms; since, well, heâs constantly fucking you.Â
You stare at the ceiling while waiting for him.Â
A few seconds of silence passes.
âY/n!â He yells, before walking out a few seconds later. You turn your gaze to him, whoâs holding the entire box of condoms in his hands. He smiles wryly, âitâs expired.â
You furrow your eyebrows, sitting up slightly. He walks over to you, showing you the date on the box. Yeah, it is expired. But you bought this a few weeks ago. WaitâŠ
âNo wonder it was so cheap,â you groan, throwing your head back on the couch pillow.Â
âThis shitâŠwonât break that easily, right?â
You glance at Drew. He looks at you, hoping you would agree to his thought. His eyes shine in anticipation, the curl of his lips upwards. ââŠI guess?â
âIâllâŠeven pull out before I cum,â he shrugs, also hoping you would agree.Â
âI⊠I take pills,â you add on, ignoring the calls of âbad idea!â going on in your mind. Lust was in charge now, and itâs commanding you to get fucked by Drew, even with the huge amount of risks it comes with.Â
He breaks into a smile, leaning down and kissing you. âHeyâŠso itâs okay?â He murmurs against your lips, an adoring look painted all over his face.Â
âHave I ever said no though?â You say, which makes him chuckle.Â
âTrue,â he replies, before taking a condom out of the box. You help him, by pulling his sweatpants off. He steps out of them, and you see his fully erected dick, screaming to be released from his boxers.Â
âAll fours,â his voice drops deeper, commanding you into the position he wants.Â
You obey; shrugging your underwear off your knees, getting on your knees and elbows. You arch your back, to make your ass higher. You feel him dip on the couch behind you.Â
He stays behind you, the noises of him preparing the only sound in the room. It feels like minutes have passed, and he still hasn't stick it in. âYou done?â You ask, unable to mask the impatience in it.Â
Drew replies with a hard slap to your ass, making you groan. He then asks, âdid you buy this for someone else?â
âWhat?â
âNot only is it expiredâŠbut you got a smaller size,â he plants a kiss on your lower back.Â
âWhat?â You say again, turning your head to look behind you. He holds the packaging in his hands; an M written on it. Oh. âThat isnât your size?â
He snickers, âyou serious?â You must have just grabbed the first pack on the shelf, not checking anything. Drew delivers another rough slap to your asscheek when he doesnât get a reply from you. It hurt, but in a good way. âBabe, you serious?â
âDead serious,â you sarcastically reply, before laying your head onto the couch pillow in front of you. At this point, youâre pretty sure your pussy isnât even wet anymore.Â
But another hard slap to your other asscheek makes you jolt up, your brain betraying you by making you moan out. âBarely fits me.â
Canât believe youâre attracted to this whiny man. âIâll pay more attention next time,â you try to hide your annoyance, âjust fuck me already.â
His hands grab the side of your hips, moving your ass to the right position. âMight slip off.â
Whatâs up with him right now? Is he seriously offended? You just bought the wrong size by accident, was it that big of a deal? âIt wonât,â you assure him, âmy fault, okay? Just put it in.â
âFine. Fine, sorry,â he murmurs.Â
You feel the tip of him against your hole, as he aligns his dick. And then, he sticks his entire dick inside of you. You moan out in pleasure, clenching around it. Fuck. He was right; you were tight, and you needed a few seconds to adjust to him.Â
But Drew doesnât let you; starting to slam his lower body into you, in a rather rough manner.Â
Clearly, heâs not sorry for being whiny.Â
âShit,â you grip on the pillow harshly. âSlow the fuck down-â
He ignores your comment, continuing his pace. Drew rarely fucked you liked this, only if heâs putting his frustration or anger towards you. âDoes this feel like an M?â You hear him grunt out, between thrusts.Â
Who knew wrong sized and expired condoms could frustrate Drew this much?
You're forced to adjust to his size and pace, ignoring how each thrust that directly hits your core hurts a bit. âFuck,â you breathe out, the pleasure inside of you building. His hands grip on your waist tightly; soft bruises might form later.Â
His grunts and your soft moans fill the room, as well as loud, aggressive skin-slapping.Â
He leaves sloppy kisses along your spine, causing your goosebumps to rise. You weren't going to lie; it felt good to be roughly handled by Drew.
Youâre close; feeling the orgasm building inside of you. He knows it too; you clench around his dick. âSomeone likes getting fucked roughly,â the tease in his voice is evident, âfucked like a slut, huh?â
Yeah. When Drew was mad or angry, he degrades you in bed.Â
But you liked it, a moan you fail to repress escaping your lips. He slaps your ass again, a chuckle heard. âCum then.â
He slams himself into you, his pace never slowing. The knot in your stomach eventually goes undone, your cum coating his dick. âFuck..â He groans, as you relax yourself. He holds your ass up, continuing to thrust to help his own orgasm.Â
He twitches inside of you; heâs close.Â
Drew slows down after a few more, and you fell him pull out of you rather urgently. You completely fall on your stomach on the couch, your body giving up.Â
But you force yourself to turn around, laying on your back. Drew sits back on the couch, his head leaned back as his cum fills the condom. Heâs right; the M size condom covers 2/3 of his dick, probably not even half when he was erected.Â
âIâm sorry,â you coo, a lazily smile on your lips.Â
His expression softens; âCome here,â he takes the condom off, wrapping it and throwing it in the garbage can nearby. You force yourself up with the little energy left inside of you, snuggling yourself in Drewâs arms. You trace your fingertips along the lines of his lower stomach, laying your head on his chest. You and Drewâs legs tangled together, due to the small couch.Â
The two of you stay silent, just enjoying the feeling of simply being in each otherâs arms.Â
This was casual, apparently. Cuddling after sex. Something people who have no attachments with each other usually do.Â
Then, you suddenly joint up, causing Drew to look at you amusingly. âWait, I actually do have a gift for you.â
âReally? You didnât have to,â he murmurs, but the look on his face betrays him. He likes how you think of him when youâre away. You hum, getting off him and walking to your room.Â
You come back with a small box, straddling yourself around his waist. You bite down on your lips in anticipation, hoping he likes it. He takes it; opening the box to reveal a menâs chained bracelet.Â
It wasnât from a luxurious brand, but you found it while shopping in your hometown, and thought it would look good on Drew.
He smiles ear-to-ear, âI love it.â
âNo you donât,â you chuckle, helping him put it on on his wrist.Â
âI do; I love it, thank you,â he kisses your cheek, raising his hand and wrapping it around your nape. He pulls you down, and kisses you, almost in a loving way. Besides from seeing the smile Drew has whenever you get him something, the way he kisses you after also drives you insane.Â
Casual, casual, casual. Â
âRound two,â you murmur with a smirk on your lips, pulling away. He chuckles, before his eyes look down to your breasts.Â
He bites down on his lip, obviously liking what he's seeing. Then, he shares the same look as you from earlier, remembering something. âOh, your favorite bra, the red one?â
â...Yeah?â You cock your head to the side, wondering where this was going.
âIt was in my dresser this entire time.â
âI knew it!â
âFound it the other day.â
âAnd⊠are you going to return it to me?â
âNo.â
You slap his chest playfully, him sending you a cocky grin. âYou got a bunch of other bras anyways.â
âDoesnât compare to that one,â you pout, leaning down on his chest, hugging him. You lay your ear close to his heart, hearing the soft rhythm of it.Â
Itâs moments like this; that doesnât feel casual at all.Â
And maybe, it never will feel casual. At least for you. You werenât the chill, flirtatious girl Drew knew, no, deep down, you were constantly doubting this situation-ship with him. Letting it drag so long, so long that it didnât feel real anymore.Â
Your stupid mind, constantly dreaming of the future with him. A shared apartment, shared furniture, shared everything. Him showing you off to his friends, admitting youâre someone special to him.Â
You loser, he doesnât even refer to you as a friend in front of others. Simply, a classmate. Fuck, you even visited his parents! Yet, he still denies. Everyone knows you two have something going on, except for Drew. Was he doing this on purpose?Â
You donât know; and honestly, too scared ask.
Because somehow, staying casual with him was better than not having him at all.Â
The soft rhythm of his heartbeat helps you to slowly drift off into sleep, the thoughts disappearing. Hopefully, you donât dream of Drew again, in a nice shared apartment, him showing you off to everyone, as his girlfriend.Â
Was this dumb love? Maybe. Possibly. Most definitely.Â

What about Norris reader (17) and Oldie and Kimi Antonelli have a crush on her. Lando, ever the overprotectiv brother, doesn't like this and the other drivers use it to their advantage, because they find this really funny. Reader is just clueless and thinks the boys are really sweet to herâ„ïžâ„ïž
Wait, why do I ship these three??
Enjoy reading and send some requests!!!
-xoxo, babygirl đ
Two for one
The bustling energy of the Mexican Grand Prix electrified the air as Yn Norris wandered around the paddock, wide-eyed with excitement. Her older brother, Lando, had arranged for her to come along this weekend, and she was thrilled to be there. Being just seventeen, this was one of her first big Grand Prix weekends on her own, without her parents or siblings (except Lando) and she couldn't wait to soak it all in.
As she explored the paddock, she suddenly heard her name being called. Turning around, she found herself face-to-face with Kimi and Ollie, both of whom had driven in Free Practice 1 that day.
"Yn! Fancy running into you here," Ollie greeted with a wide grin.
Kimi smirked, giving her a casual wave. "So, what do you think of Mexico so far?"
Yn smiled brightly. "Itâs incredible! Iâm so happy Lando invited me."
"Oh, he invited you, did he?" Kimi asked with a sly grin, glancing over his shoulder as if expecting Lando to pop out of nowhere.
Yn laughed, rolling her eyes. "Yeah, but heâs already being overprotective. He thinks I'm going to, like, get lost or something. I just wanted to go look around by myself, but he practically assigned me a bodyguard."
Kimi and Ollie exchanged amused looks. "Well, weâre here now. So, if you need someone to show you around or keep you company, I think we can handle that," Ollie offered.
"Yeah, youâre in good hands, Yn," Kimi added with a wink.
---
A little later, Lando noticed Yn with Kimi and Ollie, and immediately, he felt his older brother senses tingling. He walked up to them with an exaggeratedly casual stride, hands stuffed in his pockets but eyes locked onto Kimi and Ollie.
"Hey, Yn," Lando greeted her, then quickly turned to Kimi and Ollie. "What are you guys up to?"
Ollie raised his hands defensively. "Just chatting with your sister, mate. Nothing serious."
Kimi chimed in, smirking slightly. "Yeah, just giving her some company. It canât be fun to wander around here alone."
Lando narrowed his eyes. "Well, sheâs not alone. Iâm here."
Yn rolled her eyes. "Lando, Iâm fine. You donât have to act like Iâm five."
"Yeah, Lando, sheâs fine," Ollie teased, nudging Landoâs arm. "Besides, it's not like Kimi and I are troublemakers."
Max, who had been watching from nearby, wandered over, grinning as he picked up on the situation. "Oh, looks like little Norris has some admirers."
"Yeah, careful, Lando," Checo joined in, laughing as he walked by. "You know, they say these drivers are charmers. Better keep a close eye on her, or she might run off with them to Yucatan."
Lando scowled, crossing his arms. "Thatâs not funny, guys."
Ollie looked at Yn, feigning a wistful expression. "Yucatan, huh? That could be fun."
Yn rolled her eyes again, laughing. "Ignore them, Ollie. Youâre all acting like children."
Kimi leaned closer to her. "Maybe. But you know, Yucatan does sound like a pretty great idea."
Lando stepped in between them, giving Kimi a warning look. "Donât even think about it, Antonelli."
Kimi laughed, but there was a hint of nervousness. As much as he enjoyed teasing Lando, he could feel Landoâs big-brother protectiveness radiating off him in waves. Still, he couldnât resist pushing a little.
"Relax, Lando," Kimi said, holding up his hands. "Weâre just here to make sure Yn has a good time."
"Under my supervision," Lando shot back, narrowing his eyes. He put an arm around Ynâs shoulder. "Youâre staying close to me for the rest of the weekend."
Yn groaned, but Landoâs resolve didnât waver.
---
The next day, Lando was more determined than ever to keep an eye on his sister. Every time Kimi or Ollie got close, heâd swoop in, leading her away or blocking their paths.
Eventually, Pierre caught onto the whole situation and couldnât resist chiming in. "You know, Lando, if you keep this up, youâre going to scare away all her potential boyfriends."
Lando shook his head, exasperated. "Thatâs the plan, Pierre."
Carlos joined the fun, laughing. "Be careful, Lando. Vegas is just around the corner. Blink, and she might end up running off with Kimi or Ollie. Maybe even both."
Ollie, who had overheard, grinned, raising his eyebrows at Yn. "What do you think, Yn? Should we book tickets?"
Yn chuckled. "Oh, please. Lando would probably have a heart attack before we even left the airport."
Lando glared at them. "Iâm serious. You two better not get any ideas, you stinky whankers."
Kimi shrugged, but his smirk didnât fade. "Relax, mate. Weâre just keeping her company."
Charles joined the group, looking thoroughly entertained. "I canât wait for Vegas now. If this is how Lando is in Mexico, Vegas will be legendary. Maybe weâll all get invited to Ynâs wedding."
Lando groaned, running a hand through his hair. "You all are impossible."
---
As the weekend progressed, Kimi and Ollie kept finding small ways to get Ynâs attention. Theyâd save her a seat, bring her snacks, and keep her laughing with stories and jokes. Each time, Lando was there, watching like a hawk.
At one point, Yn turned to him, exasperated. "Lando, seriously. Iâm just hanging out with friends. Can you please relax?"
"I am relaxed," Lando replied, not convincing anyone.
Yn shot him an annoyed look. "Youâre practically breathing down my neck."
Ollie leaned in, whispering, "Told you heâs overprotective."
Kimi chuckled. "Youâre handling it well, though."
Yn laughed, shaking her head. "I think itâs actually you two who are nervous around him."
Both Ollie and Kimi exchanged guilty looks, though they quickly covered it with their usual confident smiles. But every time Lando was around, they seemed to straighten up a little, wary of his watchful eyes.
---
On race day, things hit a peak. Kimi and Ollie had managed to catch Yn alone, and they were chatting animatedly about everything from their goals in racing to funny stories from the paddock. Yn was laughing, completely unaware of the fact that both boys were subtly vying for her attention.
But it didnât take long for Lando to find them, and he wasted no time inserting himself into the conversation.
"Hey, Yn, you ready to come to the garage?" he asked pointedly.
Yn glanced at Kimi and Ollie apologetically. "Duty calls, I guess."
Ollie gave Lando a pleading look. "Come on, Lando. Let her hang out with us for a bit longer."
Lando raised an eyebrow. "Why, so you two can keep flirting with her?"
Kimi flushed, stammering, "W-We werenâtâ"
Yn stared at him in surprise. "Flirting? Seriously, Lando? Weâre just friends."
"Exactly," Lando said, taking her by the arm. "And thatâs all youâre going to be."
Max and Charles, who had been watching the entire exchange, burst into laughter. Charles clapped Lando on the back. "Relax, Lando. Youâre acting like youâre her father."
Max nodded, grinning. "Good luck keeping her under control in Vegas. Donât be surprised if she elopes with one of them. Or both."
Lando scowled, his grip on Ynâs arm tightening slightly. "Not happening. Not on my watch."
Yn sighed, throwing Kimi and Ollie a helpless look as she was guided away. They exchanged amused, slightly nervous glances, but it was clear that they werenât about to give up. She blew them a kiss, which both Kimi and Ollie pretended to catch. Ollie put his "kiss" to his heart while Kimi put his on his cheek.
As Yn and Lando walked off, she glanced up at her brother, shaking her head. "You know, if you keep acting like this, no oneâs ever going to want to date me."
"Thatâs the point," Lando muttered under his breath.
Yn laughed. "Youâre ridiculous."
"And Iâm your older brother," he replied, smirking. "Get used to it."
Behind them, Kimi and Ollie shared a look, nodding in silent agreement. Theyâd have to work harder to get Ynâs attention without incurring the wrath of overprotective older brother Lando. But they werenât about to give up. After all, Vegas was coming up soon, and as much as Lando hated to hear it, the weekend held endless possibilities.

Meeting the Team
Carol Danvers x Female Reader
Carol brings Monica and Kamala home to take refuge for an evening and to meet her wife. Fluff ensues
Note: I was just thinking about Carol having a secret wife and the lovely Monica and Kamala meeting her. Enjoy this one!
Carol Danvers Masterlist, Main Masterlist
Youâre stirred from your sleep when you hear the sound of a ship landing near your house. You hope itâs Carolâs.
When you hear the sound of the front door unlocking, you roll out of bed and walk to greet her in the front room.
Sheâs in her suit but it looks a little worse for wear. Carol catches sight of you and the weight falls off her shoulders.
âHey sweetheart,â Carol says softly, a smirk rests on her face.
You cross the room quickly and pull her into a hug. She flinches due to her own soreness but keeps hugging you anyways.
âAre you okay?â You ask her, grabbing her face in your hands.
âIâm okay,â she says.
Her eyes are determined. You realize sheâs here just for a short time to regroup or gather some information.
âI missed you,â you say.
âI missed you,â Carol replies.
You lean in to kiss her but you stop short when you see two women, or rather one woman and one teenage girl, walk in the door behind her.
âCarol?â You alert her to the presence.
âItâs okay,â Carol says. âWeâre- well I guess weâre a team.â
âWe are so a team,â the teenage girl says.
Carol tries to hold back a smile but you see it on her face that she likes these teammates. She turns around and holds you by the waist.
âY/n, this is Kamala and Monica,â Carol says.
âWait, the Monica?â You ask. The womanâs eyes flash to Carolâs at your words.
âYeah,â Carol says. âOur powers are entangled.â
âRight, okay. Itâs nice to meet you both, come on in and make yourself comfortable,â you say.
They move to sit on the couch. Carol goes to the bathroom to freshen up first.
âWhat was your name again?â Monica asks you.
âY/n,â you supply. âIâm Carolâs wife.â
âOh my god,â Kamala says, mostly to herself.
âWhat?â You ask.
âOh, sheâs just a fan girl,â Monica explains. âSheâll be writing fanfiction later about Carol having a secret wife.â
You chuckle at the girlâs antics. You canât blame her for loving Carol enough to want to create new versions of her.
âCarol and I got married a few years ago,â you say. âBut we really havenât been able to spend much time together. Planets need saving and all that.â
âSounds familiar,â Monica says.
Carol enters the room and sits down next to you with a sigh. You want to ask more about her reuniting with Monica but thatâs for another time when itâs just the two of you.
âDo you have powers?â Kamala asks. You realize this girl has a talent for breaking awkward silences.
âI do not,â you say. âAlthough, wrangling this one in should be considered a power.â
âWow,â Carol says. âIâm offended.â
âDonât be, baby,â you say. You kiss her cheek and she tries to hide her blush. âItâs a privilege to love you. Even when you run off to space for months at a time.â
âYou could go with me if you want,â Carol shrugs.
âNope. Thatâs your world up there. Not mine,â you reply. Carol only smiles. âAre you guys hungry?â
âStarving,â Kamala answers. âI mean no, weâre good.â
âCome with me,â you tell her.
You lead the girl into the kitchen and let her take her pick of food to eat. She settles on a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Kamala asks you a few questions about Carol and your relationship. She seems genuinely excited with every answer she receives.
Monica and Carol are in the living room still. You donât hear much talking, so you make Carol a sandwich and go get her.
âBabe, I made you a sandwich,â you say. âPlease eat at least half. I know you havenât been remembering to eat a lot.â
âIâm fine,â Carol says. âI get enough.â
âGo.â You leave no room for argument. She sighs and goes to the kitchen. That leaves you alone with Monica.
The woman is sitting on the couch. You know from her vantage point that she can see the framed photo of Maria that Carol keeps on the shelf.
âIâm sorry to hear about your mom,â you say, not really knowing what to say.
âOh, thanks,â she replies.
âYou know I think Carol has some more pictures around here somewhere,â you say. âMaybe next time you come by we can look for them.â
âYeah,â Monica says noncommittally.
âDo you need anything? A drink, food, medicine?â You ask.
âThank you. Iâm okay,â Monica says.
âAre you sure? I can tell Carol is sore so I can imagine you all are,â you say.
âYou can tell that about her just from looking at her?â
âFrom the hug. She flinched,â you explain. âShe never admits sheâs hurting, but I know she is. Although, I do see a part of her healing. Probably from reuniting with you. She seems happier.â
Monica nods. She knows that this has meant a lot to Carol. It means a lot to her too, but right now sheâs still a bit hardened to the idea of being in her presence again.
Carol and Kamala come back into the room before you can say anything else. You help show them where to sleep and then end up back your bedroom with Carol.
She changes into some pajamas and snuggles into bed next to you. You rest your head against her shoulder.
âHow long?â You ask her.
âJust until morning,â Carol replies. âI need to fix a part of my ship. And I wanted to see you.â
âHow are you doing with this whole Monica thing?â
Carol takes a deep breath. She hasnât really had time to stop and think about it.
âIâm okay I think,â she says. âIâm good. Itâs amazing how sheâs grown up to be so wonderful.â
âYeah? She has powers, thatâs insane.â
âI know,â Carol says. âI didnât know that until I saw her with Fury. Sheâs really a great person too. I definitely couldnât keep Kamala as safe without her.â
âWhatâs the deal with Kamala? Sheâs a kid who loves you?â You ask, a chuckle escaping from your lips.
âApparently,â Carol sighs. âBut I really donât feel like Iâm a good role model for her. Maybe sheâs seeing that in the choices Iâve already had to make in front of her.â
âHey, you always do your best. Sacrifices are necessary. You know that, baby,â you try to encourage her. âThe way that girl looks at you definitely makes me know that she looks up to you.â
Carol kisses your head and rubs a hand over your back. Itâs slightly warmer than normal, meaning sheâs using her powers to help you relax.
âWe need some sleep,â Carol says.
âWe do,â you reply. âHey, donât let me forget to tell Kamala in the morning about how we met.â
âOh god, sheâs going to write a story about it,â Carol says. âWhatever fanfiction is.â
âItâs fantastic,â you reply.
âYou know what it is?â
âOf course, babe.â
âAnd youâve read it?â She asks. You nod. âAbout me?â
âNo,â you laugh out. âI donât need to when I have you already, my love. Although, I do need some new content.â
Carol grins mischievously. Sheâs sent you countless videos, pictures, and voice memos over the years. But it has been a while since she has done that for you.
âTell you what, when this thing is over Iâm coming back home for a while,â she says. âAnd we can spend our time doing whatever we want.â
âIâd love that,â you say. âGoodnight, my love.â
âGoodnight, my beautiful wife,â Carol replies.
You kiss her lips for a few minutes before you both feel the weight of sleep fall over you.
When you wake in the morning, you spend a few more hours with Carol, Kamala, and Monica. The goodbye is always hard, but you know Carol will come back to you. She always does.

You were the little sister of Julian Loki. And you were also deaf, not that it mattered anyway. You've been using a hearing aid to help with that. Being Loki's sibling, you've also grown to love football. He'd teach you how to kick, pass, and even score against him. Notably, you also look similar to himâ some may think you're twins.
Being a part of PXG, too, just like your brother came as a surprise. You were the only woman there who could actually keep up with more teenage boys. So, when fans found your interactions with other players, they couldn't help but fantasize if you were at least into some of them.
So when your big brother, Loki, was scrolling through his phone. He sat, watching a ship edit between you and the other guys, others have fantasized. Immediately springing up to action, yelling out your name. "Tell me what's the meaning of this..?!"
Itoshi Rin
You were lazily chatting up with Rin in a call. Occasionally, you two have been decent friends, even with how awkward this man is. Your eyes finally widened, the way your brother was yelling must've been important. Feeling atleast a groan coming up, you've quickly signed to him like you do in sign language.
Loki was immediately a bit fired up, the usual calm brother you know was a bit annoyed. "You're talking with Rin again?" The way he said it felt like it was something personal, and spoken in french too. "Yeah? is that alright?â"
"Not really, I just needed a talk with you." A talk? Now, this was serious, none of you were going to have a siblings quarrel even.. You were just so confused until he pulled out his phone.
"Look at this..!" The phone illuminated to show some tiktok edit going viralâ even Rin from the camera could see it if he squinted. As you watched in anticipationâ you realized it was an edit with both you and Rin. Then, let out a small gasp, Rin was even more alarmed now.
"Oh my God, bro..??" You let out a small voice after the edit ended, and it started replaying. "So, are you two keeping something from me?" He finally let out the question in English.
"Absolutely not!"
Charles Chevalier
He usually visited you and your brother quite often, considering how him and Loki had been training him to be his own passer. It's a bit weird, but you didn't mind not being at the field much anyway. Charles was a weird guy to, he's lounging on the sofa like a kid.
Loki didn't understand why he was even here, hanging out with them on an off day. But he decided to just scroll his phone. When you finally reached the living room, Loki was already scolding Charles for God knows how long. Charles just hummed closing his ears with his palms.
"Big bro?" His mouth immediately shut up at the sound of your voice. "Oi..! Your brother has been scolding me..!" Charles quickly whipped to your direction as Loki let out a small sigh. Straying past your brother quickly, over to your side.
Loki looked absolutely disappointed at Charles. "Did you know that these people like the edits of you two?" Now that made you confused. You were just grabbing a cup of tea, and now your brother was talking nonsense. "These people are thinking you both are dating!"
Then the phone's brightness casted onto your eyes, even glaring the light on you. Eyes widening infactâ as the video played. It's a really lovey dovey song on that too, "Brother what are you on about!"
"Are you sure he's getting too closeâ" "I'm sure!"
Isagi Yoichi
Now you've only met him through the match between PXG and Bastard Munchen. Exchanging phone numbers, and you've grown to actually appreciate him. So, in a day off, you eventually met up with Isagi. No, what you both didn't know is that some fans recognized you, and it's gone viral.
Loki was just scrolling through his feed for the day, and his thumb stopped on a certain post. It was pictures of you and Isagi displayed on a thread. Investigating further, he found an edit of you two. Even the PXG boys asked Loki on the matterâ
Let's just say you came home, with an investigating Loki. Your brother had never usually been this invasive in your space. Not when he's literally right by your shoulder as you had a call session with Isagi.
"Uhm, big bro..?" Your voice low, his head finally tilted downwards to meet your level. You heard his loud voice booming across the house already. "You and that Isagi.. are you guys together?" Certainly, you could hear Isagi coughing.
Even the other voices perked up in Isagi's end. Looks like the Bastard Munchen's dorm was alive and up to hear onto Isagi. "No?â" You were immediately questioned and even showed the evidence on Loki's phone. "Brother, we're just friends?" Loki's mouth pressed to a flat line.
"I swearâ we have nothing like that."

You donât love him; you are almost sure of that.Â
Itâs not because you laugh at every single one of his stupid, lame jokes made just for you to laugh and because you blush everytime you catch him staring at you from across the room that you love him.Â
Itâs not because he, Poe Dameron, gives you more attention and affection than your own boyfriend ever will that you are in love with him.
Itâs not because your boyfriend blames you for being too close to him that you are.
Itâs not because you wish it would have been Poe down on one knee proposing to you that it is the reason you told Kass youâre not ready for this yet.
And itâs not because you question your situation every single night that it means you have to change anything about it. You should be happy with Kass. You are.
Yet, you wish you were certain of all of that.
It has been two days already, and the guilt keeps eating away at you, like a bacteria gnawing at your feelings, particularly starving for the reasonable part of you that knows you said no for your own well being.Â
Kass makes it worse; the dark glances thrown at you whenever you bump into each other during the day and his lame excuses to ditch you whenever you want to talk to him make you feel like a monster, and though you know that it is exactly the way he wants you to feel, you canât help it.
The situation is hard to swallow and bury deep in the back of your mind when youâre out on missions, and though you rarely ever get distracted because you know how important attention and concentration is in your job, the whirlwind of thoughts has been floating over the surface, and your focus has been off, you know it. And youâre not the only one who knows it.
Your head turns when you feel a light nudge at your arm, having dismissed Poeâs presence in your peripheral vision due to your distraction. His eyebrows raise when you look at him, and he gazes at you like the mist of your thoughts is still present over your face and he wants to shake you awake.
âYou alright?â he asks before you look back at your squadron wrapping the mission equipment, setting it back in the ships.
âYeah,â you breathe out, burying your hands in your pockets. You should feel alright. The mission went well despite your clear lack of attention, and youâve given your life to the Resistance at this point, so you should be thankful that you succeed in most things you do in its name, right now even, considering the situation.
Poe looks down on the floor, kicking away a small rock there that dribbles down the hill. âYou've always been an awful liarâ he mutters under his breath, not buying it.Â
âRightâ you scoff, your head dropping to shake it. He looks back up at you and you can feel his insistent gaze upon you, which eventually makes you break. âI donât wanna bother you with my stupid problemsâÂ
He snorts, âCome on, you know Iâm always here to listen to your stupid problemsâ he says playfully, nudging your arm with his elbow again. âThat are often not that stupid actuallyâ he adds.Â
Thereâs a silence settling between the both of you, and right before Poe aborts and figures you donât wanna talk about it, you sigh. âKass proposed.â
âOhâ the sound slips from his mouth, and accurately represents his surprise, his voice dropping a bit from the shock. He doesnât know what to say, not really. This situation would have been on the list of things he would have never expected or even considered to happen.Â
This eventuality had never, ever occurred to him somehow, not yet, and now, all at once, the fear creeps in and becomes real; he is going to have to watch you get married, going to have to sit there amongst guests, heâs going to have to watch you be happy with someone else than him.
But he wants you to be happy, with or without him, so he will watch. It isnât like he has the choice, anyways.
He lightly clears his throat, trying to dismiss the tight knot starting to form there, and smiles. The worst thing about it is the fact that it is genuine, he is truly happy for you. You deserve this.
Maybe Kass doesnât, though. He doesn't deserve you. Youâre too good for a half assed mechanic like him that, from a professional point of view, fucks up too often to still be there; but from what Poe hears around, it tends to be the same on other levels than just the professional one.
âWell, thatâs great! Congrats,â his half cheerful voice wavers a little, but you donât seem to notice as your lips form a polite smile that slightly turns perplexed, uncomfortable. âWhatâs wrong about thatâ he asks now, concerned when he sees your frown.Â
Your teeth graze your bottom lip. âI said no.â
âOhâ he watches as you raise your eyebrows, nodding. âIâm sorryâ he adds. âI meanââ
âYeahâ you exhale.
âWhy?â
That is the real question. Why? Why wouldnât you want to marry your boyfriend you are supposed to be in love with? Why did you feel so awful at the feeling of his hand over yours when he shot the question?
âI donâtââ you start, thoughts running around your head. Youâre not really sure about what you want to say, youâre not even precisely sure why you said no. There were so many reasons, but you couldnât pick the exact one. âI think Iâm not ready.â
Poe doesn't say anything. You stay there upon the small hill you watch your respective teams from. Theyâre almost done putting everything back.
You think you want to cry. Youâre not really sure why. You think you want to dig a hole in that hill and stay hidden there for the rest of time.
âPoe, I don't think I wanna spend the rest of my life with him.â you mutter, looking ahead as if your confession would make you feel less guilty if you didnât look your friend in the eye. âIs that wrong?â you ask as you turn to him.Â
âYeah, well I donât blame youâ he scoffs, and you do too, knowing how Poe feels about Kass.Â
You should have known, it should have been a sign. Poe is kind, compassionate, and when he doesnât like someone, it is because he has reasons to.
âThatâs not wrong.â he continues, his tone serious now. âIt would have been wrong if you said yes even though you knew damn well you didnât want to marry himâ he nods. âIt's not the end of the galaxy if you said no. He'll get over itâ
âYeahâ you sigh. âHe keeps acting like it's my faultâ
âReally?â he asks, raising an eyebrow in astoundment. He shouldnât be surprised.
âYeah. He avoids me and sends me death glares like I murdered his family or somethingâ you snort, realizing the stupidity of it all now that you say it out loud. Kass has always been somehow childish, but this exceeds everything you could expect from him.
âWow okayâ Poe shakes his head, a small exhale of desperation escaping his mouth before he speaks again. âWell, you know how I feel about him, sweetheart.â
âI knowâ you confirm, sending him a weak smile. He answers you with a pinched one, and as your squad finishes their tasks and starts to gather together, Poe reaches out and squeezes your shoulder reassuringly before turning to join them.
He turns back to you quickly, âYou know what? My squadron is having drinks on Coruscant tonight to have some fun before we leave for the week. You should join usâÂ
You nod and watch him go, and feel the need to take one fat fucking breath before eventually joining everyone else.
â
Even though it is almost dry by now, the stain over your dress is still ridiculously visible. If the girl that had spilled it over you earlier hadnât profusely apologized for it you would have most likely have had a go at her because of the awful mental state you were in â you were yourself surprised to notice how blatantly dismissive and weary you had been of that incident â it had been nothing compared to the past few days you just had.Â
Poe looks over at you, your gaze planted onto your glass of Black Hole as your fingers absentmindedly drum against the table; your choice of drink says it all, and though you might want to get properly drunk, Poe is strictly against it if it means you plan on moping all night long. He finishes his drink, planting a hand over your shoulder as he leans closer to you.
âWanna go dance now?â Poe shouts in your ear, trying to overlap the loud music blasting. You scoff and shake your head, âIâm not really in the moodâ
âThat's exactly why we need to,â he affirms with his usual charismatic grin as he takes a hold of your hand and pulls you to the middle of the room anyway. âCome on!â you give in when you realize heâs not really asking, dragging you through the crowd. âYou know I'm leaving tomorrow morning, you owe me a danceâ
âOkayâ you laugh as you put your hands over his shoulders, his coming to rest at either side of your waist.Â
You move stiffly at first, your eyes rolling playfully when Poe gives way more energy into it than you do, and despite yourself, you start to smile, and make an effort to match his energy.
Poe spins you around, his movements confident as he tries to cheer you up. "Just follow my lead, okay?" he says, his voice warm and encouraging. He twirls you under his arm smoothly, and you canât help but laugh as he dips you dramatically, catching you with ease; heâs intimidatingly close to your face before he leans to your ear. âSee? Iâm not an awful dancerâ
âIs there even something youâre not good at at this point,â you rhetorically ask as you both stand straight again, the movement making your head spin a little because of the alcohol.Â
âFollowing orders, probablyâ he jokes, still swaying with you. You laugh and let your forehead rest over his shoulder, your eyes shutting as you take a deep breath; it might have been the only moment in those past few days where you genuinely let go of all your worries.
âHey, we should go outside, itâs hot in here. And loudâ Poe proposes as you both still sway, his hand gently cradling your back.
âSureâ you nod with a smile. âWaitâ Iâll join you there, Iâm gonna get us drinksâ
Thereâs a grin plastered over his face and a glint in his eyes as he glances at you when you join him outside, your drinks in hands. The cool night air is a welcome change from the overwhelming warmth inside the cantina.
âWhat?â you scoff, looking down at yourself, trying to figure out the reason behind his amused expression.
âNothingâ he shrugs off, taking his drink from you, but not before you catch the way his eyes linger on you.
âItâs the stain, isnât itâ you whine and sigh as you pull at the fabric of your dress to observe it. âDidnât realize it looked that stupidâ
He giggles as his mouth is still full of his drink. âItâs stylishâ he admits with a cheeky grin.
You scoff and roll your eyes, your giggle fading as you both take a sip of your drinks, the silence between you comfortable as the muffled hum of the cantinaâs activity buzzes just behind you. Then, out of nowhere, just as youâre about to talk again, Poe breathes out your name, his expression changing, becoming more serious as you glance at him expectantly.
âIâm in love with you.â he blurts out, like words are falling out of his mouth from being held there for too long.Â
You huff out a laugh. âNo,â you laugh, the taste of your drink still warm in your throat. You frown a bit when you notice he doesn't waver, doesn't flinch, doesn't drop his expression to admit this is some kind of joke now that he knows it's not working on you.Â
âYes I amâ he declares, as serious as he is when he needs to be in his job.
You chuckle, still not fully believing what he's saying. âAre you drunk Poe?âÂ
âWhaâ noâ no Iâm notâ he frowns, his eyebrows knitting together in earnest. âI mean it. I'm in love with you.â he affirms, his eyes searching yours with a seriousness that makes your heart skip a beat.
You pause, taken aback by the tone of his voice â he's sincere, he's not playing around. âYou canât.â
âI know.â he declares with a nod, his gaze never leaving yours. âI just couldnât keep it to myself anymoreâ he admits as his expression softens. âI donât want this to ruin our relationshipâ he says, his voice calmer now. âAnd I know you canât feel the sameâ he nods, âAnd thatâs okay.âÂ
You pinch your lips together. You're not sure what to say. You nod eventually, acknowledging it all, processing his declaration. âWellâ you say finally, your voice barely louder than a whisper. âI, uh, Iâll go get another drink.â
Your glass is still mostly full.
Poe nods, swallowing with difficulty as he watches you turn and head back inside.
The sounds of laughter as you enter the cantina again make you sick to your stomach.
â
This went awful. He didnât expect any less. He didnât expect anything in the first place; his impulsiveness finally got the best of him.
Having to swallow it down and play it like it didnât happen felt more humbling than every time he has had to admit he made a mistake. Jessikaâs story about the maintenance issues with her X-wing is slowly starting to blur, and Poe isnât even sure sheâs still on that topic of that â at this point â one sided discussion, as he canât help but glance over at you, talking to KarĂ© until he eventually realizes you arenât there with him anymore.Â
âPoe!â Jessika scolds him, making him turn back to her. She sighs, âYouâre not even listeningâ
âSorryâ he apologizes, looking around the room to figure out if youâre still there. âI gotta go, keep that story for laterâ he nods, patting her shoulder before turning away.
âI just finished telling it,â she huffs out in disbelief, Poeâs repeated apology fading with the music as he disappears through the crowd.
Youâre not in the cantina, not anymore. KarĂ© tells him you went out for fresh air, and he finds you on the flight of stairs on the side of the building, hidden from everyone.
"I was looking for you," he haltsâ you're crying; you're there, sitting on the stairs, looking up from where you were hiding your face in your hands crying. "What's wrong?" he asks, his voice wavering with surprise; he thought you were having a good night despite everything, having fun with KarĂ©, he thought he had been able to make you forget about your problems for a moment. But no, and he obviously knows whatâs wrong, because he managed to fuck it all up by confessing his feelings for you without thinking about it twice.
You pinch your lips, trying to repress new tears as you wipe away the ones rolling down your face. "Nothing," you mumble, shaking your head. "It's alright."
Poe sighs softly, walking up to you and sitting down with you.Â
He softly nudges your shoulder with his own, âYou're rocking that stain,â he says, a small grin over his face. âFor what itâs worth, you could even rock a First Order suit, so,â he smiles as he watches you laugh between sniffles. âYou don't have to worry about that.â
He sighs, and his tone grows more serious. "I'm sorry I said everything I said. I shouldn't have burdened you with my feelings" he admits. His voice is filled with regret. He should have kept that for himself, for now anyway. âI was caught up in the moment and I didnât realize it would hurt you more. It was stupid. It was unfair to you." his voice weakens. He looks back at your face. You blink your tears away silently. âI do realize it was possibly the worst moment I could choose to tell you thisâÂ
Poe gently wipes your tears away, before they can reach the bottom of your face.
âI donât expect anything back from you, you donât have to worry about that. This doesnât have to change anything about usâ
He kisses your cheek before leaving.
â
If you had to point out positive points about your indirect fight with Kass following his proposal, the fact that you werenât living with him would be one of them.
The silence in your quarters alone was surely more bearable than the silence that would fill the space if he were there with you, you were sure of that.
And even if itâs been three days already since you rejected his proposal, you have barely talked to him despite going out of your way to try to; he has been hurt by your rejection, and he is keen on making you understand.
You canât help but wonder if you would have been happier if you had said yes; maybe it would have been easier and maybe you wouldnât feel so bad even though you still wouldnât want to marry him, even if it is exactly the way Kass wants you to feel. Maybe saying yes would have been the right decision, after all, and maybe you would be set about your feelings for good with the prospect that you would allegedly spend the rest of your life with him.
Then there's Poe, his words.Â
Poe and his words that keep rolling around your head over and over again no matter what youâre doing and no matter what time of the day it is; those about the confession of his love towards you, and those that assured you that Kass would get over your rejection, that itâs not the end of everything, not the end of your relationship with him even if right now, it seems like a deadlock.Â
And almost as if it was staged, Kass steps through your door.
âHey,â he speaks, hands in his pockets. You repeat the same thing quietly, looking at him expectantly, waiting for him to say anything, apologize maybe. He looks around your place before chuckling, pointing and walking over to the table. âItâs justâ I forgot my gloves last time I came here and I need themâ
âOh, so thatâs it.â you snort darkly, following him close.Â
âYeah, thatâs it.â he mutters nonchalantly as he picks up the pair. âWhat do you even meanâ he frowns as he turns back at you, shoving his gloves in his jacket pocket.Â
âI mean you've been avoiding me all week and you think it's okay to casually come here just to pick up your stupid pair of gloves?â
âWell, theyâre still mine, soâ he shrugs. âAnd again, what do you want me to doâÂ
You frown. âI donât know, maybe apologize for your attitude for these past few days first. Youâve been childishâ
âIâm childish? Youâre the one whoâs not ready for marriage.â
You chuckle in disbelief, âYeah well, Iâm sorry for not wanting assured long term with someone that behaves the way you do.â you say, looking at him in the eyes though you would rather be looking everywhere but here at the moment.Â
âYou know,â you start, readjusting your position onto your feet. âIâve been wondering, asking myself all of those questions, what was wrong with me for rejecting you.â he looks at you, hand still stuck in his pocket, waiting for you to make your point.
âAnd thatâs what you wanted, right? But the one thing I really asked myself was âWhy did he even proposeâ, because you donât even care that much about me, so I donât understandâ you shake your head. âYou shouldnât have asked the question if you werenât ready for the other answerâ
He sighs, eyebrows raising slightly as he pinches the bridge of his nose. âYeah, I shouldnât have asked at all, youâre right.â he scoffs. âI realized that, and I should have realized when we started to drift awayâ you frown softly, waiting for him to continue. Youâre not sure what he truly means beyond that. âI asked you to marry me to be sureâ
âSure of whatâ
He chuckles and huffs out your name like what he means to say is evident; âYouâre in love with Poeâ his eyes soften, his expression relaxing as yours hardens. âDonât try to tell me otherwise or Iâll go crazyâ he laughs nervously.
âLook, I get it. He looks pretty damn close to perfect. But you should have done something about it. I shouldnât have been the one to realize it.â he says. You sigh softly, taken aback. âThis is why Iâve been avoiding you. To try to come to terms with it. Accept it.âÂ
Knowing this is the reason Kass proposed somehow makes it simultaneously better and worse. But heâs right; heâs fucking right, youâre in love with Poe and that is exactly why you were crying on those stairs the night before Poe left for his mission, maybe it is time to face it for good and to stop trying to convince yourself that youâre just confused because of everything that has been happening in your relationship lately.
âIâm sorryâ your voice is poisoned by guilt. If it feels awful for you, it must be even worse for him. He scratches his forehead awkwardly, not really knowing what to say to you. âI tried to deny it to keep it fair for you. But I think youâre right.â admitting it to him, the man youâre supposed to be with and have feelings for feels even worse than having to realize it yourself. âIâm sorry Kass.â
Kass pinches his lips in a defeated smile, âI canât hold you back.â he huffs out in evidence. âHe is tooâ he adds after a pause. âIn love with you, I mean. Itâs so blatantly obviousâÂ
You scoff, shaking your head. âI knowâÂ
âSo you can work this outâ he declares with a weak smile. âI wonât be an asshole about itâ he mumbles. âI should be angry but Iâve tried to accept it for a while.â
You nod, somehow grateful he is so understanding, feeling sorry that itâs been so transparent for him for so long. Not everyone would let it play like this. "Thank you, Kass."
He nods in return before sighing deeply, the weight of the past few days lifting slightly from his shoulders. âI wish you well. I mean itâ
You nod again, tears welling up in your eyes. âYou too.â
Your heart tightens when his look lingers over you before he turns away and exits your quarters; both relief and guilt weigh over you, and the silence that fills your room now feels much different than before.
â
You donât love him; you are sure of that. It feels wrong and even though you still feel some sort of affection towards him, youâre not sure you can be friends anymore given how you left things off.
On the other side, when Poe hops off his X-Wing ladder after a week of being away, you don't know how to act around him anymore. You donât know if you should go ahead and tell him everything youâve ever wanted to tell him or if you should just pick the opposite option and avoid him as much as possible to try to ease your conscience a little.Â
And you do. You busy yourself with work as much as possible, avoiding running into him as much as possible, but eventually, he doesnât really give you a choice.Â
âAre we okay? You didnât even welcome me back. Itâs been four daysâ it hasnât even been twenty seconds since the meeting ended; the meeting you spent all your time trying to focus on instead of him.Â
His stupid flight suit is opened in a way that reveals his gray tank top and lets the chain around his neck slightly peek, and suddenly nothing about the First Order supply depot infiltration matters anymore.Â
âWe are. I was busyâ you affirm â youâre technically not lying. Though you were keeping yourself busy on purpose.
âI bet you wereâ
You frown. âHey what do you mââ
âKass talked to me.â he dodges.Â
âOhâ your voice drops, the idea of that scene so unnatural. âWhat did he sayâ
He shrugs slightly. âI think you knowâÂ
Thatâs a good thing they talked, somehow, no matter how much the idea terrifies you. It lifts a weight off your shoulders to know you wonât have to explain to Poe how you left things off with Kass, because you would almost rather get interrogated by the First Order than have to think about it again. âHe was pretty mature about it, Iâll give him credit for that.â Poe affirms with a grin, causing you to huff out a laugh. âHe also said he's resigning from the Resistance. âSays it has nothing to do with you, he's been thinking about it for a whileâ he nods with a pinch of his lips.
âOh, okayâ your eyebrows raise in surprise. âWell, ships will suddenly do better magicallyâÂ
He snorts. âIâm just glad I never let him take care of mine. I think Jess was complaining about that the other dayâ you laugh, and he smiles at you endearingly as he watches you. âSo, are we okay?â he asks more seriously, though a faint smile lingers over his face.
âYeah, yeah, we are.â you nod, weakly smiling back at him. âItâs just been a rough couple of weeksâ you admit as he gives you an empathetic smile in response.
âI know what I want but I donât know if Iâm ready,â you eventually declare cautiously, not wanting to hurt him or make him feel like you're trying to push him away. âIt has all gone so fast and I think I want things to slow down a bit.â he nods understandingly before being obliged to turn when someone in the briefing room calls his name; he holds his hand up to have them wait and rests that same hand over your shoulder when he turns back to you, his gaze holding yours.
âLookâ I donât want you to jump right into this if youâre not a hundred percent sure about it.â he declares with as much conviction he has when he fights for whatâs right.
âThis is my thingâ to jump head first into everything. That's why I acted the way I did the other night. And it was stupid considering the situation and some part of you probably hates me for it somehow so you have to be smarter about thisâ he insists. âAnd I know you will be. And even if itâs in one week or one year or five, I can handle itâ
âOkay,â you mutter feebly, his firm gaze over you making your stomach flutter.
He turns back and glances at the person who was calling for him earlier, turning back to you. He hesitates, looking like he wants to say more but is unsure if he should.
âAlright. I got stuff to take care ofâ he eventually says with a faint sigh, like being teared out of that conversation with you physically hurts him.
âOkay Commanderâ you grin teasingly. He smiles and kisses the top of your head, your hand instinctively resting over his arm despite your decision to maintain some distance for the moment.Â
"You know where to find me if you need anything," he says quietly, his hand lingering on your shoulder for a moment longer before he steps away.
Youâre still not sure what you really want as you watch him walk away, sending easy smiles to his peers as he reviews details with them for the next mission.Â
You think about it all over again, as you remain here in the back of the room, leaning against the wall; the way he looked at you, the understanding in his eyes, his patience and willingness to wait â it all seems so easy with him that jumping right in suddenly doesnât make you so afraid anymore.
â
The sky isnât particularly clear tonight. One could have picked a more scenic place to come rest to, one where clouds wouldnât be covering DâQarâs two moons like a thin, old veil ripped to shreds.
Poe turns at the unexpected sound of boots ruffling against the grass, a small smile growing over his face when you grunt softly as you sit down next to him.
âYou lied when you said Iâd know where to find you, because Iâve looked for you everywhere before finally finding you out thereâ you sigh softly, drawing a laugh out of him, his eyes crinkling softly.
He shrugs, âYou still found me, so I technically didn't lieâ he says with a smile.
âYou've got a point,â you huff out, settling beside him. The air is cool, cooler than it has been those past few days. You canât help your lips turning into a smile as Poe's face softly glows in the faint light of both moons, his gaze gentle as he looks over at you.
His eyes twinkle with amusement when he talks again, interrupted when you shift to press your lips to his, his words quickly lost on both of you. His voice fades into a small sigh against your mouth as his hand immediately, almost instinctively cups the side of your face. Your hands grip the lapel of his shirt tightly, gently pulling him closer to deepen the kiss; Poeâs chuckle vibrates against your lips as you pull away, a slight flush visible over his cheeks.
âWhat is this?â he asks amused, the look of surprise genuine over his face. This goes against everything you told him you wanted with him for now.
âThis is me being smarter about this, being the bigger person.â you affirm in an attempt to sound confident, but youâre still slightly out of breath, your heart racing.
Poe looks at you with a teasing, feigned impressed expression before he goes in and kisses you back, the press of his lips soft yet firm against yours.Â
Everything around you seems to fade away as you make out for a beat, losing yourselves in this, the soft breeze of the evening tickling both of your faces though your face heats up even more when his thumb traces your cheek.
When he finally pulls back, Poe's hand is quick to find your own, his fingers fiddling and lacing with yours, his gaze on you still intense. âSo much for going slow, huh?â
You chuckle, âYeah, fuck thatâ you reply with a grin, feeling lighter than you have in weeks.
You both fall silent for a while; it is rare for Poe Dameron to not run his mouth for longer than a few minutes, but the back and forth of his thumb over your hand and your head leaning over his shoulder seems to be enough for him at this moment.
You shatter the silence the moment the question crosses your mind. âWhat would you have done if I actually married him?â
He takes a deep breath, like the weight of the question takes a toll on him.
He smirks, âThis would have probably made me join the First Orderâ he jokes in an attempt to lighten the mood. You huff out a laugh.Â
âHonestly?â he asks, his tone serious now. He doesnât speak, he doesnât really know. What would have been the best option? The least worst? âI donât know. But I would have skipped the wedding for sure.â you softly smile at him with a look of compassion, momentarily rendered speechless by his revelation.Â
He pinches his lips in a weak, beaten smile as he clearly pictures the scene in his mind again, just the way he did when you announced to him that Kass had proposed before eventually telling him you had refused. âSorry. it would have hurt my poor loverboy heart way too muchâ he scoffs light heartedly though itâs barely a joke, just the truth.
âWell, next time I get married youâll be the first person I inviteâ you promise with a light nudge at him, your hand reassuringly squeezing his.
âNext time huh?â he retorts with a playful smile, one that you mirror before the gentle push of his lips renders you breathless again. âNot if I invite you first sweetheart,â he jokes with one last kiss, your laugh barely audible.
Poeâs thumb traces circles on the back of your hand when he notices your gaze is there now, a faint smile remaining over your face. âHeyâ he calls, urging you to look up at him. âOne day at the time, okay?â he cocks his head forward, his voice barely above a whisper. âWe donât have to figure everything out right now.â
Thereâs no rush with him, no doubt, just the certainty that whatever happens, it will seem like the easier thing in the world;Â
Because you love him; you are sure of that.
â

Hii! Could you please do a Daisuke x Reader SFW/NSFW where they are both nerds and always end up having deep lore gameplay conversations during nighttime, as they talk reader starts to cuddle him and he melts under her touch.
(you choose if that goes further or not)
your own medicine | daisuke
author's note: hehehe can you guys guess what game they're talking about? also bay area asian daisuke supremacy (cover image credit)
summary: (daisuke x gn!reader)Â You and Daisuke often spend your nights staying up much too late, talking about your interests. While talking about a game the two of you adore, things get a little more physical than normal.
word count:Â 1,434
warnings: kinda nsfw? just a little over the clothing fun (making out and dry humping >>>) all characters are 18+
now playing: The Smashing Pumpkins - "The Boy"
ââșââ âïž ââșââ
âWait. For real? You really didnât know that?â Daisuke chimed from where he laid on the bed.
He shifted onto his elbows, sitting up like the conversation had suddenly turned serious. You couldnât help but laugh, finding his investment undeniably endearing.
âI only played the game once. I guess I just kinda followed the path they lay out for you,â you replied. Your shoulders rose and fell, a casual shrug in response to his reaction.
His expression twisted into one of utter disbelief, pure bewilderment as he crashed back down onto the bed. He ran his hands along his face, dragging at his full cheeks with a low whine.
âOh my god. Youâre breaking my heart, [Name].â
The two of you were in Daisukeâs room, with him lying on his bed and you sitting alongside him. Your back was against the wallâthe cool wooden paneling now warm from your body heat, and your legs were stretched across his stomach. On the other side of the room the digital clock read â23:03â, the evening well into the shipâs artificial night-time.
âStop whining and just tell me about it.â You cocked your head to the side as a playful smile twists on your lips.
Daisuke pulled his hands away from his face and his excited eyes met your own. âWait, really? You wanna hear about it?â
âNo, I asked you to tell me because I didnât want to know,â you paused, narrowing your gaze as you looked down at him. âCâmon, Daisuke.â
âOkay, okay. No need for attitude, smartass.â Daisuke chuckled warmly. âYâknow how after beating some bosses you get those umbilical cords?â
âYeahâŠ?â You replied skeptically, realizing how weird this conversation would sound without context.
âWell, theyâre like one-third blah blah blah, but thereâs actually four in the game. Isnât that weird? I guess itâs to, like, allow for some user error or whatever, but it really doesnât make sense mathematically. Like, what do you mean there are four one-thirds of an umbilical cord?â Daisuke started to ramble, completely oblivious to the amused look on your face.
Slowly, you shifted your body, turning to lay on your side as you settled onto the bed beside him. Daisuke froze for a moment as you curled into him, not sure what to do next. The smell of your shampoo filled his nostrils as you rested your head on his shoulder, your face practically buried in the crook of his neck. He felt his heart begin to race, and he silently prayed that you couldnât hear it from where you laid.
âGo on,â you mumbled. Your breath ghosted along the side of his neck as you spoke.
His Adam's apple bobbed as he swallowedâhis mouth suddenly ran dry and his tongue felt almost fuzzy. His train of thought had completely derailed. It was like it had been picked up and thrown right off the tracks, sent into a nearby ditch to burn in some fiery explosion.
âOh, right,â he said with a shake of his head, gathering his words once again. âSo, after you get three, you kinda have to eat them. If you consume three, you unlock the secret ending and become a Great One, like I said earlier.â
Not so casually, Daisuke wrapped an arm around you, pulling you tighter. Your body was incredibly warm. If this went on for another minute, he was sure he would melt like a popsicle under your touch.
âThat game is so fucking weird,â you responded with a laugh. âLooks like I gotta replay it when we get back.â
Every word you said was like torture to Daisuke. Your breath was hot against his skin, sending faint shivers throughout his body. His own breathing was becoming slightly irregular as he found it harder and harder to think straight.
âYou definitely should. Come visit me in San Francisco, we could totally make a whole thing out of it,â he managed to say. His voice wasnât nearly as confident as it usually was, wavering slightly with each word.
You leaned in closer, your lips accidentally grazing his neck. âSeriously? Iâd love to!â
Despite your enthusiasm, your voice was gentle and smooth. The sweet sound blew through Daisukeâs head like waves crashing against warm sand, like his favorite song. He could listen to you talk all day; in fact, he gladly did whenever he had the chance. Nights like theseânights where you would sit in his room just across the hall from yours, and the two of you would talk until the simulated sun roseâmeant everything to him. You were quite possibly the brightest thing on that dreary, old ship. The Tulpar needed more people like you.
The feeling of your soft lips against his skin made his breath hitch. It was a quiet sound, almost inaudible, but you were unfortunately close enough to hear. Your brows raised curiously, a thoughtful smirk playing with the corners of your mouth as a thought crossed your mind.
Your heart started to pound against your ribs, your handsâone at your side and the other resting on his chestâbegan to sweat, and your own breath grew jagged with nervousness. After a moment of contemplation, you gingerly kissed his neck, testing the waters.
Daisukeâs face suddenly felt hot as his cheeks dusted with a vibrant flush. A pleased hum vibrated in his throat. He looked down at the top of your head, watching closely as your hair fell the more you leaned into him. You peppered more kisses against his neck, each one tauntingly soft. He had officially melted, putty in your hands.
â[Name]...â he managed. His voice was hoarse and he cleared his throat, feeling embarrassed.
You carefully lifted your head, your eyes trailing over his blushing face before they landed on his brown ones. With your head tilted to the side, you mustered a quiet, questioning âyesâ.
Daisuke's focus fell from your eyes to your parted lips. His tongue darted out from his mouth, swiping over his bottle lip. In an instant, he was kissing you. His hands cupped either side of your face as his lips crashed into yours, capturing you in a slow, desperate kiss. He kissed you like he had been dying to do it, like it was the last thing heâd ever do on that godforsaken ship.
A moment later, you were on top of him, straddling his hips with his hands on your waist. You tangled your fingers in his hair, unconsciously tugging at the dry roots. Daisuke exhaled roughly through his nose as you steadily started to work your hips against his, grinding into him at a deliberately teasing pace. It took everything in him not to rock his head back into the pillow, to break away from you and tell you everything he was thinkingâall of those needy desires brewing within his foggy mind. Daisukeâs hands ventured over your curves, caressing your waist then following the rise of your thighs. His fingers dug into your skin as he started bucking his hips into yours.
Your lips stifled a moan that threatened to slip from him. Daisuke sat up, pulling you impossibly close to him as he deepened the kiss. You gasped as he reached around and grabbed your ass. Taking advantage of your surprised reaction, he slipped his tongue into your mouth, moving with yours in a dance that made your mind go blank.
His hands made their way over your hips again, gripping your thighs tightly in his large hands. He broke the kiss, a thin line of salvia connecting you two as his mouth worked its way along your jawline, leaving hot, wet kisses in its wake. Daisuke painted your neck with sloppy kisses, absentmindedly sucking and nibbling at the sensitive skin. There would probably be a mark or two in the morning, but neither of you cared at that moment. It would be a worry for the next day, but, for right now, you couldnât give a shit. You could barely breathe as he left one last kiss under your jaw.
âHow do you like it?â he asked, looking up at you with a smug smirk. The brown of his irises was almost entirely consumed by the inky black of his dilated pupils.
A delirious laugh rumbled from your throat as you playfully frowned. âI liked it a lot before you stopped.â
âYou want me to keep goinâ?â
âI mean,â you began, wrapping your arms around his neck lazily. âIf youâre offeringâŠâ
Daisuke snorted, his face bright red. He leaned in, placing another soft kiss to your lips, a smile still fixed on his own.
