The fucking season isn't done yet and I'm already thinking about all the stuff that could happen in season 3!!
Ed getting a new outfit! Because as much as i love his leather look, he needs a new less blackbeardy look, colorful too, that man needs color, preferably purple!
Seeing mary and anne again with their own ship (and perhaps a crew of just women!)
Ed and stede being very much married and so casually open about their relationship, including casual kisses and pet names!
Seeing what the hell happened with buttons! (because he was written off for the rest of the season) I'm still 99% sure he was kidnapped, maybe that'll be a plot point!
More of izzy being stedes first mate (if you told me I'd want this a year ago i wouldn't have believed you)
And finally the season and the show could end with ed and stedes wedding!!

I agree with all your takes on omfd season 2... wasn't all that a laugh and a half :/ do you have any thoughts on a prospective (?) season 3?
Oh yeah lmao, the writers were definitely having a laff, unlike me 😭😭😭
When it comes to season 3:
• I can't imagine or accept a situation in which Izzy is not there in the flesh. Not after a season that specifically introduced the concept of magic and the gravy basket. I don't want him to be a ghost or a vision of guilt-ridden characters. I want my boy back, in the flesh, to pester everyone around him and to finally have his hot girl summer ‼️‼️‼️
• as much as even after the first 3 eps of s2 I could potentially see Steddyhands happening, all of that kinda went to shit in my eyes after they killed Izzy off.
• After everything that happened I can't and don't want to imagine Ed and Izzy reconciling enough to get involved with each other romantically.
• I can see Izzy with Stede tho. I'd actually like that quite a lot.
• at this point I'm not a Blackbonnet girlie (gn) by any stretch, and well, I can't imagine myself enjoying a potential season 3 if all it has to offer will be more drama between those two
• knowing them both, I think they will be making genuine attempts at running an inn for half an episode. And I'm being generous
• also, I can't imagine a season 3 that has Zheng just. Hanging out on the Revenge. Making out with Oluwande. And not even attempting to rebuild her pirate empire. I need my girl cunning and powerful with a fleet to show for it. I think that what they did to her by the end of the season was a shit writing decision. Was her losing her entire fleet... Supposed to humble her? To teach her a lesson? What lesson? That it's not things but people that really matter? It's kind of a weak message, especially for this character. And the execution of it was just. Plain bad lmao. Her talk with Auntie by the end was cute, yes, but it came so out of the blue tbh. If it has been established earlier on that maybe Zheng feels insecure sometimes and would like for Auntie specifically to tell her she's proud of her, that would make more sense. But this way it was kinda. It didn't have the punch it should've had.
• also sidenote: Zheng deciding to team up with Stede (even if it was mostly because Ed was also there) doesn't reflect well on him... It reflects badly on her. My girl deserves allies as powerful as her and Stede is simply not that.
• I want more crew shenanigans. And more backstory for every crew member!!!
• I can imagine a version of the story in which Stede and Ed break up and just don't get back together again by the end. It's so beautiful here. Hold my hand
• also sidenote, but has Jim just completely given up on taking their revenge on the Siete Gallos? I think it would've been fun to revisit that storyline
• also - WHAT HAPPENED TO JIM'S BROTHER
• honestly - after the shitshow that was season 2, I can't think of an actual potential way that the story could end. And tbh I don't think the writers do, either. I do have ideas, but they're mine and not the writers' of the show, and thus not very likely to actually happen.

I think I know why everyone is so angry about the finale:
It’s because they won’t get to see Con O’Neill show off his kissing skills in future episodes.
BUT WHAT IF
Izzy is making out with other pirates in the afterlife.

My current prediction with Ed and Izzy this season is that they are (obviously) going to have a proper conversation, I assume in the finale, and... it's not gonna go well. I think Ed will be able to heal his relationships well enough with everyone else by that point, at least to the extent that everyone's able to interact with him casually.
But Izzy is different. Not only did Izzy get hurt in a way nobody else did, but their relationship was already complicated and dysfunctional for a long time before all this. And while Ed wants to be accepted and liked, if Lucius or Jim or Archie are never able to get to a place where they're properly friends with him, I don't think it will matter all that much to Ed? But again, Izzy is different. Even if their relationship was toxic and unbalanced, Izzy's care and approval and ease around him did mean a lot to Ed and it won't be the same to him if Izzy is able to be around him, but never close again.
And the fact that Izzy had to go full denial to move forward and the way you can see his boundaries and resolve cracking when he learns Ed has talked (positively) about him to Stede--yeah, I just have the feeling that the talk will be good in the sense that it'll be like lancing a wound, where they both finally get out some ugly emotions without purposefully being malicious to each other. But it won't end with them being friends or okay with each other again.

My hopes for when we get season 3 of OFMD
This is a list that I have saved somewhere in the back of my head, hoping for those things, these people to come back for S03 if or more likely WHEN we get it.
So the list:
Mary, Doug and the kids meet Ed and the gang, either at their home or a boat
Stede gets a tiny tattoo ;)
the Inn, Ed and Stede open an honest to God Inn
Izzy becomes the captain of his own ship,
Buttons resurfaces somewhere as a human for a minute ;)
we get to see more of Ed, Lucius, Izzy, Stede and the others past, family members etc
THE WEDDING of Pete and Lucius, we were robbed of that!
SLOW DANCE of Ed and Stede, we were robbed of that too!
ANOTHER WEDDING *wink, wink*
one big villain for the season
15 episodes at the very least!
Also my other hope is this:
special mini season with 3 episode, each 45 or 90 minutes long where OFMD is set in modern times, this could be actually not so bad. They'd fit in ANY time and universe. Also can you imagine Stede and his Instagram? I can 😆
Tell me what are your hopes before we all get sucked into the season 2 finale tomorrow.

major ofmd s2 spoilers but it’s kind of beautiful in a way to see the youngins call That character dying a “typical” bury your gays trope, in a show that is specifically about queer love filled with queer characters who have happy endings, where both casual and passionate gay affection is shown again and again, and always portrayed as something beautiful and tender and good to be embraced
#ofmd s2#ofmd spoilers#‘typical’ bury your gays.......... 😭#y’all rly have no idea what it’s like to NEVER see yourself portrayed unless it ends in a violent tragic death huh#specifically targeted BECAUSE the character is queer#and i say this genuinely with love like that’s why it’s also pretty nice. i’m glad such a point has been reached#but also omg. experiencing sadness and disappointment over a writing decision for your fav doesn’t make it a hate crime#personally i thought it happening was rly uninspired and predictable so kind of feel nothing over it because it’s so blah#feel like they just straight up didn’t know what to do with him#also s3 hasn’t been confirmed has it?? bc this season def felt like they shoved what was supposed to be a 20eps arc into 8eps#and there won’t be more. idk#but IF there is i need him to come back as the ship’s ghost fucking with everyone lmao#anyway i'm not even that old and when i was 12 i watched brokeback mountain and when i was 13 it was boys don't cry#and that was basically ALL i'd seen for big queer rep in media. like literally only thing ever#and the fear it instilled truly was part of me rejecting my own queerness for so long#who would look at izzy hands & go welp better stay cishet for the rest of my life or the devil will come for me; thats def the lesson here#if anything the end scene was about how happy he could’ve been if he’d realized earlier he had a whole queer fam who loved & accepted him#just as he is#END ESSAY

Ugh I'm still thinking about that damn tweet so...
2x08 Reaction #6
Ok, so this is not a screed against people posting about or hoping for Izzy's return - whether in joking denial or genuine belief. Like if that's what makes you feel better after the finale, you are entitled to all the posts, fix-it fics, etc.
But.
I really want to push back on this idea that it's this obvious thing canon is supporting.
This is not another Lucius situation. Like. It's just not.
Look, when Lucius was "killed" at the end of S1, it was a joke everyone was in on. He got tossed over the side of the ship with a little "fwoop" and a literal shoe spinning in the air. His "offscreen death" was confirmed by a guy who could not have known what happened after he fell. Of course he was alive.
Lucius's fake-out was so successful because it engaged with the genre of the show in a way that rewarded the audience for buying into the suspension of disbelief.
Izzy's death... doesn't.
Izzy dies from a stray bullet in a shot that you might miss on first watch. He's not doing anything important, or protecting anyone. It's random. They reveal he's injured and then make it back to the ship, only for him to give a dramatic deathbed speech. He dies on screen, and they immediately cut to his funeral.
This isn't the kind of death that fits with OFMD's universe. They tried to borrow a scene from Black Sails or something and just sanded down its edges. Killing a character in the main cast just because "it's a pirate show"? Really? The daring escape plan is real and dangerous and life-threatening in the same episode where Auntie survives an explosion, and we watched Zheng and Edward casually massacre their way through a dozen soldiers each?
I'm buying into the suspension of disbelief that our ragtag crew can escape scott-free because it's a silly romcom about a muppet guy where "things always have a way of working out in the end", and then the show looks me dead in the eye and says "Actually, no, this time the consequences are real. Sorry."
A bird landing on a grave doesn't change that?
Like... in Pirates of the Caribbean they can resurrect Barbossa from the dead like it's nothing because some of the first worldbuilding elements they introduce are a compass that points at what you most desire and gold that curses you into an undead existence. Of course necromancy exists.
OFMD had a guy turn into a seagull behind a tree for plausible deniability, a cursed coat rationalized as a peanut allergy, and the gravy basket which took place wholly in Edward's head. Resurrection would be a hell of a reach. Even if they did open S3 with it, it would be a retcon of Izzy's death, not a reveal that we all could have predicted.
Which does mean that pointing to vague tweets from the crew or likes of Witch!Buttons posts and pushing the idea "Look - they're telling us he'll be back!" leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Like... it's not set up as an inside joke this time. And especially if they don't get renewed - and they certainly seem worried - they should not get credited for leaving this particular beat "open" and just being thwarted by MAX or whatever.
Izzy dying right then, as shown on screen, was unambiguously their final beat.

ok so i was actually kinda surprised to find that looking at the ao3 stats and adjusting for how long ofmd’s existed (a year and a half) vs how long the stucky fandom’s been around (coming up on a decade), not only is gentlebeard on par with stucky but it actually beats stucky for amount of fics written. but i’m making a prediction now just based on how i’ve observed fandoms to work: i do think the gentlebeard popularity will peter out faster than stucky did
i’m not saying bc i think gentlebeard is worse or the ofmd fandom is weak or anything, i’m saying this bc in fandom it seems like the white masc queerbait ships* have like, an absurd amount of longevity that goes way beyond the general fandom surrounding whatever media said white masc queerbait ship hails from. im thinking abt the protagonist/rival ship from the TERF wizard series that nobody decent talks about in public anymore. before we all cut jkr out of our lives, people were still churning out fics abt the main character and that racist blond kid pretty regularly. and another example, we have those scientists from pacific rim that are more popular than any of the main characters from that movie. it’s been years and the newt/hermann fandom is still going strong.
and i say “newt/hermann fandom” intentionally, bc that’s the thing that i think actually gives these ships their longevity: when there are fans who are primarily invested in a piece of media because of a noncanonical masc4masc queerbait ship, they’re not really fans of the media itself. i mean, some of them might be, but if they are then that’s in addition to being fans of this alternate queer interpretation of the media in question. they’re a fan of the fandom mass hallucination that the fans collectively and collaboratively invented of a romantic/sexual/homoerotic relationship between two guys who on-screen might hug like once or twice (or sometimes even never)
and i’m pretty sure the reason this sort of fandom phenomenon tends to have so much longevity is bc the fans have already created this whole extensive romantic storyline using what is often some pretty minimal canonical material to work with. so when the movie franchise or the tv show ends and the shippers no longer have any new canonical material to work with, they can keep going for years because really, they were already making shit up from the start.
so compared to that, gentlebeard is way different bc everything the fans might have invented on our own the show pretty much already did for us, and anything the show didn’t do yet is probably coming for us this season (or in s3, fingers crossed). i’ve mentioned before how a lot of fanfiction seems to fall on a spectrum between “fix” and “expand,” and by the end of ofmd i doubt there’s gonna be a whole lot that gentlebeard fans feel like they need to “fix.” versus stucky, where there’s so much that needs to be fixed that you might as well just throw the whole canon out.
i don't really mean any of this as a criticism or an attack on fans of queerbait ships like this, im just pointing out fandom trends that i've noticed. i myself have been deeply invested in stucky, newmann, and the gay wizard boys at different points in my life. like there is something very fun abt putting on slash goggles and making queer content out of nothing. personally though, now that we're in an age where we're getting canon queer content, im not so engaged in a lot of the ships i used to care so much about, but i don't think it's inherently wrong** for people to still enjoy some classic fandom queerbait ships. it's just a very different thing from enjoying canonical queer ships like gentlebeard
*im using “queerbait ships” loosely to include popular gay ships in media that was never in a million years going to make these characters gay.
**a clarifying point: i don't think it's inherently wrong, however there are a lot of problematic elements to this kind of fandom activity, namely the way a lot of these queerbait ships will dominate a fandom while other characters who are important in canon get completely sidelined (and yes, the sidelined characters are often women/poc). also, less importantly, when people's primary media consumption revolves around strip mining canon for shipping content, this absolutely destroys their media literacy and critical thinking. again, im not saying this to attack ppl who engage in fandom primarily through fic/art of noncanonical gay ships, i myself have done the same thing. but i think ppl who do should also make a conscious effort to also engage with fan content that centers women/poc, or at the very least need to be aware of the issues around this kind of fandom activity.

ofmd s3 and the impossibility of predictions
I don't tend to speculate what happens in any show's future seasons other than the broadest strokes, like if it's gonna be a happy ending or not. I love being surprised by the plots. I mean, who could have EVER predicted mermaid-stede or izzy in drag?
So I don't also really know what I would have expected of OFMD s3. The big plot would have been about the end of piracy, I think. The crew fighting for their place in the world. Pirates vs empire. I don't know how that would have played out, because in history, the pirates lost. Could OFMD sailed to a happily-ever-after if they went through that plot? I don't know.
More than that, I don't know what would have happened with Stede and Ed. They were in a peaceful place now. Would we just have gotten to see them live together, happily getting to know each other better and better? That would have been revolutionary in a way. How ofter do we see couples actually get to BE together instead of just getting together? But I think more likely they would also be swept in an adventure with the Revenge. There would have been dramatic fight scenes, maybe a proposal... There would have been exploring their roles as pirates and not pirates. Is Stede okay leaving piracy behind already? Can Ed truly leave it behind after a lifetime as a Blackbeard? I don't know.
And my personal biggest questionmark is about Izzy. "There is no version of the show without Izzy Hands." Would they truly have pulled a gravy basket and brought him back? Personally I would have loved to see them do it, it would have been so ballsy and the whimsiest thing the show ever did, truly a fuck you to all TV rules. Would they have given Izzy more time? Or was he truly dead? I don't know.
I don't know, I don't know, I don't know.
AND NOW I WILL NEVER NOW.
There was no predicting what happened in s2. Mermaids and drag. I am equally unable to predict anything about s3 other than the very broadest strokes. Because there would have been its own equivalents to mermaid-stede and izzy in drag, just totally unhinged batshit crazy and ballsy moves that no-one could have predicted.
But they are gone. Never to be found out.
Fucking devastating.

OFMD S3 opening prediction.
. Short timeskip
. Ed&Stede are enjoying their Inn owning life, but start to fear that things might become mundane
. They get flashbacks to Anne Bonnie and Mary Reed and fear that they might end up like them unless something changes soon
. One stormy night their first customer arrives at their inn, they're delighted.
. It's Izzy.
. Ed and Stede panic, Izzy explains the supernatural circumstance (possibly involving the gravy basket or whatever) that led to him coming back.
. He recuperates at the Inn for sometime before heading off with his own ship to get revenge. Ed and Stede decide to join him

Good Omens S3 possibilities?
These are not predictions, or even really based on any actual evidence. Just thoughts that I’ve been thinking about.
In no particular order:
I would like to see more pre-The Beginning scenes. Specifically, the battle and the Fall. Something about how Crowley said "I remember going into battle" has just stuck with me and I want to SEE IT. (also, they got Benedict Cumberbatch to voice Satan in S1, and I feel like we deserve to see a proper bumblebee cumberbumble cameo).
I want to see how Aziraphale influencing the car/the car not being fully Crowley's anymore plays out. Angsty side of me would actually quite like to see the car refusing to play Queen and repeatedly giving us "Nightengales" to the point where Crowley lashes out and destroys the car. Would be peak breakup angst. Fully devastating.
What happens if Hell asks Crowley back now? I’m not sure they actually want him back, but what if he pulls a OFMD finale Kraken move and goes full demon. Heart broken, rejected, unloved, unforgivable: might as well prove them all right by finally being the evil demon they all told me I was when I wasn’t good enough for them.
(Right, now I’m picturing Crowley blowing up the Bentley and saying “fuck God and fuck Humanity” and going full feral. I don’t actually want this, but it’s not unlikely)
I really don't want a sex scene. I don't even want another kiss. I want there to be long, desperate hugs and intimate cuddles, but I want it to read comfort and safety rather than lust.
I think we're going to see more of 1941. I think what people have noted about the Nightengale song coming out around then is very likely relevant, as is the fact that this is the only footage we see twice. A long flashback in S1, expanded on in S2. I feel like this is going to come back again in S3. Whether it's to see more of that night specifically (like what happened to the photo and who took it home to stare at for 80 years) or whether we'll see the next day/week because when, on that night, would Aziraphale have had time to do the I Was Wrong dance?
I want more Muriel. Like, a lot more. They saw the bookshop breakup, and they looked pretty shook the first time we see them through the window. I want to see how they grow and learn on Earth when they're very likely not being supervised by any other angels. How long will Crowley sulk outside before he’s invited in/overcome with the urge to help Muriel?
I would like to see one or both of our main babes growing facial hair. I know we don't really see that much on angels or demons but it would be delightful to see. Equally, I would like to see one or both of our main babes full femme-presenting.
Something I don’t actually want, but well within the realm of possibility: not just memory erasure by Heaven, but intentional self-deletion as a coping mechanism. Thinking Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind here. Think, “I’m erasing you and I’m happy!” (spoiler: they’re not happy).
I will probably keep adding to this as I rewatch Season 2 a few dozen more times.
