Since it’s the first day of Pride, thought I’d share something that I’m very passionate and opinionated about, that being

What Makes for “Good” Aromantic and/or Asexual Representation

Essentially I’m just sharing my own personal standards for when it comes to aro and/or ace rep. And you’ll notice a lot of this is the bare minimum. You’ll also notice how very few pieces of media actually do any of these. This isn’t to attack any particular creators (though some will be mentioned as being bad at this sort of rep not as an attack but as an example). Think of this as more for any aspiring writers or creators who want to include aro or ace rep in their work. Because idk about y’all but I’m kinda tired of just settling for the sort of rep we do get

And of course I don’t speak for all aro/ace people and some may disagree with me and that’s ok! These are just my personal opinions based on experience

1. Say it, don’t code it

A lot of asexual and especially aromantic “representation” is just coded but never explicitly stated. Characters will show disinterest in dating or even repulsion in some cases (see Saiki from Saiki K or Senkuu from Dr Stone). And while that’s all well and good, I barely even count that as representation

Showing a character is aromantic and/or asexual is fundamentally different from showing a character is gay or bisexual. And that’s because it’s a LACK of attraction, not the presence of it. You can have a character show interest in the same sex and nothing more really needs to be said because that’s you telling your audience what that characters preferences are. But you can’t have a character just reject another character and expect that to have the same effect because it’s not as if allosexuals/alloromantics are attracted to every person they meet

Now in the cases of Saiki or Senkuu where they say repeatedly that they’re not interested in sex or romance without actually using the words, I’ll concede that that’s slightly better than Viktor from Arcane just rejecting Skye and then the creator trying to claim he’s asexual after the fact. However, I still don’t think this is necessarily good representation even if it is better. That being because there is a long history of characters who start off saying they’re “not interested in dating” and then changing their mind. Or fans interpreting them as being gay instead or their close friendships actually being romantic. The easiest way to avoid this is just to use the words “aromantic” and/or “asexual”

This doesn’t mean you have to write a whole coming out scene either. It can be as simple as a casual mention or a pride flag hung up somewhere. But it should be said

2. State it in the piece of media

One of my biggest pet peeves about aro/ace rep is that it will be confirmed but only outside of the media itself and rarely in canon. Frankly I think more characters are confirmed outside than they are inside. Let’s go over two of main ways this just doesn’t work

It’s easy to miss. I didn’t find out about Viktor apparently being asexual several months after confirmation. And I’m pretty sure a lot of fans still don’t know

It creates discourse. A lot of fans simply won’t accept it because it was confirmed post canon or outside of canon. Or there will be accusations of it being fake or people trying to make excuses as to why they should be allowed to ignore it and so on

The only exception to this rule I have is that if your setting is maybe a fantasy world or historical setting where those words don’t exist then yes, it makes sense for it to not be stated in canon and instead confirmed elsewhere. But please for the love of god don’t just confirm it after the fact or else it just looks like a JK Rowling “Dumbledore is actually gay!” thing

3. Learn what it means to be asexual or aromantic

This might be one of the biggest “the bar is on the floor” things said in this post and it’s honestly depressing how many creators I’ve seen that have made me feel the need to say this. If you’re going to have a character be asexual or aromantic, you should know what those words mean. Like I’m literally asking for the bare minimum of research here

Do you know that asexual and aromantic are different things?

Do you know what either of those words even mean?

If your answer is no, for the love of God Google that shit before writing it. I’m so tired of creators saying shit like “this character doesn’t want to date because they’re asexual”

4. Let our representation be diverse

Some aces/aro’s are POC. Some are disabled. Some are trans. Some are asexual but not aromantic. Some are aromantic but not asexual. Some are not fully aro/ace but on the spectrum somewhere like demisexual, greyasexual, librasexual, aceflux, and so on. Some are sex/romance repulsed and some are sex/romance favourable or indifferent

We’re as diverse as any other community with a wide range of experiences. And yet a lot of the rep we get is very white, usually just sex repulsed asexual or aro/ace, and able bodied. Now as a white aro/ace able bodied person myself I can’t exactly speak a lot on this but I do encourage any writers to seek out and learn about the experiences of others in my community that don’t look like me

While on this subject, remember it’s not unrealistic to have multiple aspec characters in your media. I’m only 20 years old and so far in my life I’ve met a total of 10 others who also identify as somewhere on the ace or aro spectrum. I promise we’re more common than you think and having multiple characters be somewhere on the spectrum would absolutely help in not just depicting the community as a monolith. Great example of this is Bojack Horseman who didn’t want to make Todd’s childishness seem like a byproduct of his asexuality and so added Yolanda who is also asexual but the opposite of Todd personality wise

5. Let your aromantic characters not be asexual

You wanna know how many non-ace aromantic characters I can name?

None.

Literally non. Zilch. Zero.

And I can make a pretty good guess as to why that is as well. Because sexual attraction without romantic attraction is so heavily demonised or made to be “promiscuous”. And this is something that needs to change. Aromantic people, for starters, didn’t choose to be aromantic. They aren’t “players” trying to get with as many people as possible, or lead people on, or break peoples hearts or whatever the fuck. They’re straight up just living their lives. Some might have a QPR and some might not. Some might engage in casual sex and some might not. Some might still date and some might not. And non of these things are bad

Aromantic people deserve representation just as much as asexual people, I cannot understate this enough

6. Let your aromantic characters be loveless

I’m not a loveless/aplatonic aromantic so again I can’t speak too much on this. However, I do see a lot of the time people trying to make being aromantic more palatable by saying “they can still feel love!” And “they can still have close bonds with their friends”. And look, that’s true for a lot of us. But it also alienates a lot of peoples experiences. Being an aplatonic aromantic shouldn’t be villainised. They aren’t cold or heartless. They just experience things differently and that’s ok. They deserve positive representation just as much as the rest of the community

7. Try to avoid stereotypes

This one is pretty simple. Don’t make your only ace or aro character the robot or the villain or the super childish side character. Some aces are super outgoing. Some aromantics are really emotional

Another part of this is let your aromantic characters be romantic and let your asexual characters be sexy. As I’ve stated before, these identities are on a spectrum and some ace people might still wear revealing clothing or even have sex. Some aromantics might love romantic media or even still choose to date. Non of this takes away from their identity and if you go this route just make sure you’re doing your research

Like, I’m speaking from experience here. I’m fully aro/ace but I still love shipping and romance in media. I’ve also listened to my friends about their sex lives. Like guys, sex is weird to me regardless of its missionary or hardcore BDSM. Not every ace is gonna be comfortable hearing about that but again, we’re not a monolith

Watching through Strange New Worlds, and I'm of two minds Spock and T'Pring's PDA. Because… of course. Vulcan shows of affection do not include kissing, and for them to go straight to fucking doesn’t seem logical, at least for Vulcans. I can’t look into every Vulcans' bedroom, but would sexual activities such as these not conflict with how the pon farr is supposed to work?

Or is there another explanation for this? Would T'Pring believe that Spock, as a half-human, would desire and need sexual attention outside of the pon farr? And as much as Spock may be someone who seeks to live the Vulcan way of life, this being his only romantic relationship with another Vulcan means he doesn’t know what’s normal. I mean, his mom's human; there’s not much he can infer from her.

I think there are a lot of people who have been in a relationship that they thought was normal when it had something anyone else would say wasn’t. It doesn’t even matter if it was an act of abuse or not, just something that they didn’t realize was out of the norm. Ace and gay people have been in relationships where they didn’t realize didn’t align with their orientation but thought that was just how it was, and it wasn’t until they reconsidered their sexuality that they realized why they weren’t happy.

Similarly, Spock may believe that it is normal for a female Vulcan to require this kind of sexual attention, seeing as how they do not experience the pon farr, and that T'Pring may believe that a half-Vulcan needs the same. This may be a contributing factor in T’Pring's seeking out of Stonn, who is never indicated as being half-Vulcan, and wouldn’t be something she’d bring up in the final breakup. Vulcans are secretive by nature; they would be guilty of not offloading everything that led to the end of the relationship as much as human would.

Or, you know, the writers didn’t think about it.

Anyhow, enough of my silliness! Let’s move our focus on somebody else’s silliness, as I romantically match you with...

Lucifer!

Right off the bat I should mention that you and Lucifer share an interest which is creating; both of you spend the majority of your days bringing life to your little creations, so imagine how fun it would be to work together and show each other the fruits of your work at the end of each day! He is definitely enchanted by how many skills you possess, but his favorite thing is when you finish writing a story and you ask him to read it. He does so out loud, imitating the voices of each character and making you laugh by doing so. As he continues reading though, his tone shifts into a more serious one, a sincere smile remaining on his face. He doesn’t want you to think that he doesn’t take your work seriously, plus he’s genuinely fascinated by how easily you can bring to life the characters in your stories.

You love baking and he loves sweets, I couldn’t think of a better combo! Many a times you drag him into the kitchen and he follows diligently, ready to help and possibly make a bit of a mess as he’s not the most well versed in these kinds of activities. But! He definitely tries for you, passing you the ingredients as you carefully try to follow every step of the recipe correctly. He’s also a bit of a chatter box himself, so rest assured you will have a lot to talk about as you break eggs and mix the ingredients! He sometimes brings up how he misses doing these things with Charlie as well, and you kindly remind him that he’s free to invite her over to do this any time as you’ve grown quite fond of her as a friend.

Returning on the topic of Lucifer being quite talkative, he really appreciates how much your interests vary as this allows you two to have conversations about anything and everything. While I feel like some things he wouldn’t be into himself, such as video games, there’s nothing that he loves more than to listen to you excitedly talk about an interest that he’s not really familiar with, because this just means that there’s more things to learn directly from you. You of course have to do your part in listening to him talk about whatever he might be into but you’re not, though!

Lucifer adores the fact that you can play the piano and electric guitar, as he’s able to play some instruments himself! It’s not rare for you two to play together, making up songs between piano keys being pressed and bows being drawn across the strings of his fiddle. The little concerts last for hours, and they always end with you sharing a tired but satisfied kiss with each other.

If there’s something that Lucifer understands about you it’s your struggle with emotions; his own are a mess, especially seeing that he struggled with isolation and depression after he and Lilith separated, but also because his humour is generally a little unpredictable. After meeting you though he’s able to pace himself slightly as you inevitably bring joy into his life, and so he manages to be helpful in your times of need. At first he might push you a little to still spend time together even though you’re claiming you need space, but once he’s got you figured out he’s going to give you all the space that you need and let you come back to him at the end of the day, offering you a warm embrace by wrapping you up protectively with his wings. And then, with a little pun here and a light joke there, he’s going to get a smile out of you again.

Speaking of hugs, he absolutely adores them. Getting to be lazy with you and cuddling is one of his favorite activities,  as it also means not having to look after the obnoxious residents of Hell for a while. Rest assured he’s going to ask for five more minutes of cuddling with you every single morning, and if you don’t give them to him he’s definitely going to get pouty.

All things considered, Lucifer is glad he’s not alone anymore, instead he found great company in you and he appreciates all the love that you decide to show him in your unique ways. He’s of course more than willing to shower you in affection, and though he might go a little overboard sometimes, being a bit dramatic and all, you know he means well and you don’t get actually mad at him.

Platonic matchup

Now that you’ve gotten your lover, let’s move on to your platonic matchup!

Alastor!

First of all this came as a surprise to me as well, as Lucifer and Alastor don’t seem to get along very well, but allow me to demonstrate why you would get along with both!

Alastor values good manners, cordiality and intelligence a lot in others, which you all possess, in my opinion. He’s fascinated by your mannerisms just as much as you are by his, and admires the fact that you seem to have many skills. Some of them he might even take part in himself, such as playing chess and delving into darker topics. This would lead you to spending quite some time together, discussing such topics over a chess board.

The friendship between you and Alastor could be seen as unusual by most other people, but in reality it’s based on a very deep trust. You both trust each other to not cross boundaries; you don’t like physical touch from somebody who isn’t close? He’s going to respect that, he’s actually just the same. He’s not the biggest fan of sexual remarks? Sure, you’re going to be relying on other jokes, primarily puns as he seems to be a big enjoyer of those.

You and Alastor enjoy the occasional planned hang out with each other, usually opting for recitals and musicals as you both enjoy those a lot. You respect each other’s wish to quietly follow the play but at the end of it you’re very eager to have an open discussion about it.

Alastor, as the good friend that he is, also tries his best to take care of any kind of conflict that may arise while you’re together for you. Will you have to hold him back from doing anything too crazy? Sure, most of the time a little scare is enough...

He’s also pretty closed off with his own emotions, so a positive thing is that he’s never going to push you to talk about things, even in general. He does worry though, you’re his dear friend, and his way of showing it is by tolerating more than he would usually. May that be a short hug or whatever you might need from him to feel better, he’s willing to make an effort to provide it to you.

Asexuality is when a person feels no sexual attraction, however they can still feel romantic attraction. Aromantic is when a person feels no romantic attraction. Jeff is technically aro/ace, but this is the 80’s and the term aromantic was first used in 2004, so he doesn’t know that.

Asexuality was first used 1869 by a German sexologist, but it was expanded to anesthesia sexual. Then in 1922 anaphrodite was used by Ralph Werther to describe men who were not sexually or romantically attracted to either sex. But I think Jeff heard about it from the Kinsey Scale, which has included asexualality since 1940.

Watching Bojack and being ace and not liking Todd that much is quite an experience.

I really liked Bojack, I thought the writing was great and this definitely includes Todd. He’s some of the best ace representation in television.

But here’s the thing; the humor in Bojack…. I don’t like it. Not because it’s bad, I just don’t find it funny. To me it ranged from mildly entertaining to downright annoying. I remember sitting through the last season and hating the bit between the two journalists and the dawning horror of realizing it was gonna be a multi-episode bit. And the thing about Todd is that he was usually the front-liner for the show’s comedy alongside Mr. Peanutbutter. So yah he wasn’t my favorite. I loved his arc and the real moments he got to have. But the thing is… his ace experience doesn’t match mine at all.

This of course doesn’t make him bad at all. People on the acespec or just people in general are going to have different experiences. I didn’t get to have the sort of connection some of my peers did but that’s okay. Todd acted as a lot of people’s first exposure to aceness as a concept, which no matter what is super cool. My real issue is how people treat me when I say I didn’t relate to his journey.

I have a friend who had been telling me to watch Bojack for years. She watches once a year (the masochist) and she knows I’m a sucker for good writing about complex issues. So I watched it on her recommendation despite not loving the first few episodes. And yknow what yah I did really like it. I could go on and on about Bojack and Diane and Princess Caroline, but everyone already has so I won’t. Anyway, after I finished I came back to her and because she knows I’m ace she (in good faith) asked about how I felt about Todd, to which I answered honestly. She was genuinely shocked. At first she also took it as criticism of the show, but she couldn’t wrap her head around me being ace and not relating to him. Which really irked me.

Tons of people in the queer community complain about how media and culture in general act as if there’s a single narrative for what being gay or lesbian or trans is supposed to look like, yet the same queer people turn around and can’t fathom that an ace person might also have varied experiences. Not every ace person is sex repulsed and it’s especially laughable to me that it’s assumed that aceness only has one “mode,” when—unlike most other sexualities— the spectrum is always the core part of the discussion around asexuality. I’m not mad at my friend for not knowing this, it’s just frustrating.

First to add to fiercynn’s great addition, I want to highlight that those same things happen especially also with female characters who “are in the way” of the gay ships and turn them into ridiculous, shallow non-characters. And a lot of afabs are in fandom, reading these stories, seeing the—probably—internalized mysogony on full display just so the shit author can have an easy time instead of actually writing.

There’s so much I want to say but my brain just cannot.

‘Urgh me writing horrible noncon and pushing it out for everyone to see and be normalized is perfectly okay and not at all impacts my anti rape morals!!!! What happens in my brain and what’s reality is dIfFeReNt!’

No, that doesn’t sound right.

First of all, intrusive thoughts and/or maladaptive daydreaming don’t make someone bad. Obviously. Of course. But hey, the internet will say you’re being ace erasure-ist when that’s literally what your calling out🙄. But for someone to look at themselves and say hey, I think I’m just gonna choose to allow my brain to go on these dark, disturbing tangents instead of stopping and saying “hey, wtf, that’s not right, I think I’ll change the direction or stamp this thought/daydream out entirely.”

I had that issue, but I’ve managed to condition myself to STOP going on disgusting mental tangents about the worst things happening to characters/people and interupt my intrusive thoughts! Guess what, I feel a hell of a lot better with less happenings of these thoughts/daydreams. I really never wrote down that shit to begin with and I’m really glad I didn’t add to this cesspool of just this nastiness for the sake of nastiness.

Which brings me to torture porn (insert whatever “character torturing” you like, I’d rather not make a list) for the sake of it and indulgently so.

I get coping art. I get exploratory art. But that shit doesn’t have to be published where everyone can see it and where it helps to normalise absolutely horrible things. Stories in which it’s used genuinely and not as some qUirKy ThIs Is HoW i Am DiFfErEnT aNd My LiFe SuCkS backstory/tool. And especially it’s not coping art if shit like noncon, pedophilia, necrophilia, incest, etc is treated POSITIVELY by the characters/story.

I don’t care how old or mature YOU are, that doesn’t mean the rest of everyone consuming/seeing this are too, and I don’t know how you’ve missed it but the media influences us. All of us. Especially young people who have no choice but to believe that the things on TV—because it’s TV and we assume a demonstration of the world—are normal or acceptable. Especially ND kids look to media for how to act. (Kids shows have morals and language arts classes push you to take lessons from stories but suddenly you’re a horrible person for taking anything away from “adult” media.)

If you can’t understand that, I guess you’re not as mature as you like to think.

drag king Will au specifics (not everything but the most important bits)

Will’s trans backstory (the basis of this whole thing):

-his basic labels are non-binary trans man. sexuality wise he’s pan, but with a heavy preference for other trans people and feminine cis men

-still loosely follows canon, but certain events are different. the whole point of this is the cat and mouse game between them with the canon already established (the patient/psych dynamic and will eventually finding out that he’s the ripper). hannibal still tries to initiate Will’s becoming, but the whole thing is filtered through a trans lens where not only does Will become Hannibal’s partner in crime and goes on the run with him, but he also ‘becomes’ his true self identity wise thanks to hannibal and his way of life.

-his relationship with gender: he was raised by his father to be a ‘southern belle’ type of girl, and held to strict female gender roles. once he was able to get to college, he saved enough money to go on HRT, and began living his life as Will. when he first got to Baltimore, he bumped into Beverly, who knew some of the big ppl at the ultra exclusive drag/general hedonism club, and got him an audition which he aced with flying colors despite never having performed in any context and bev is basically his fairy drag mother bc she has experience of her own

-the club’s backstory: it’s basically a place for baltimore’s elite to go and be secretly gay and for drag shows, there’s a certain group of elites (which includes Hannibal) who wear masks and sit in the vip seats and do a digital tipping system so they don’t have to reveal themselves. basically, it’s an underground club where most things are allowed (with extensive rules, so also kind of a sex club, which Will occasionally partakes in but not for money, and does drag and burlesque and occasionally stripping if he has to fill in for someone). it’s very exclusive in its clientele and performers, and only performers who are considered to be amazing and near perfect are invited to work for them. basically, it’s a club for hedonism. politicians go there and extremely powerful ppl in general

-hannibal is a long time supporter and regular of the club (in most of the areas) but before Will was hired, he hadn’t gone in a year and decides randomly to go on the night of Will’s debut because he was curious about how Will would be. Will starts working for the FBI around the same time as his initial debut, and almost immediately knows it’s Will, but Will doesn’t find out about Hannibal going to every single show of his (drag/burlesque/stripping) until about mid way into the fic, which then leads into the section where Will purposefully chooses songs that he knows will rile Hannibal up. basically, Will ups the ante with every performance until he’s able to provoke Hannibal into action (aka they finally fuck).

-cont: once Will knows about Hannibal going, he starts to tease him slightly at their appointments and pretty much every time they’re together, even at work. he’s testing Hannibal’s patience at this point, and Hannibal starts to drop cryptic hints that he knows about Will and teases him back. eventually, the sexual tension comes to a head when Will does a duet with another king in front of Hannibal (and it’s a VERY sexually charged song), which drives him to act on his feelings and ambush Will backstage, fucking him on the counter and right against the mirrors as the other performers watch from the other side of the room (and they’re both aware of their audience). it’s at this point that Will whispers to Hannibal that he knows that he’s the ripper so nobody else can hear them, and they both confess their love for each other.

-cont: after the final curtain call, Hannibal rushes him out and tells Will that he’ll be staying at Hannibal’s house for the night and Will doesn’t even fight it. once there, Will convinces Hannibal to let him de drag first and get comfy before he’ll do anything else, and of course Hannibal whines about it a bit, but lets him. after Will is out of drag, Hannibal lays him down and tells him that they’re going to properly fuck, and it’s slow and romantic sex, compared to the spur of the moment fuck back at the club. the next morning, they talk about Will knowing he’s the ripper and they formulate a plan to fake their deaths and run away together. Will’s performer friends and contacts at the club help arrange for them to leave the country and get Will hired at a new club under a completely new identity (because not surprisingly, this happens A LOT there) and they live happily ever after as murder husbands in Cuba. before they leave though, they spend a while longer there just to be able to kill and make tableaus together.

-nobody but Hannibal and Beverly ever find out about Will’s job which is why he’s still able to be a performer (because the club is very protective of their talent and have close relationships with gov. officials). Chilton finds out but is appropriately dealt with

-Chilton also goes to Will’s shows and is very creepy about it to Will at work and starts to sexually harass him when Hannibal isn’t with him. Once they know about each other, Hannibal vows to make Chilton regret his advances, but Will stops him from outright killing him immediately. he hatches a plan to bait and trap Chilton at a secret location (that Hannibal owns obviously) under the pretense of a private strip show. when the time is right during his performance, Hannibal surprises him and they both torture him and castrate him. they do this just before they leave the country as their last murder in the US

-during the initial period of Will not knowing, Hannibal starts to theme his tableaus after Will and some specific performances, as a way of courting him. that’s when he finally started to suspect Hannibal because of the same reasons in the show. he starts to realize that the ripper is a huge fan of his and begins to try and cater to him without even knowing who it is, only knowing that he’s in the VIP section and is one of the city elites. as the tableaus get more and more bold and obvious, he officially begins to suspect Hannibal. so he does a number that is tailored exactly to what Hannibal likes and he stands directly in front of the VIP section, making eye contact with Hannibal and doing very sexual movements towards him.

-cont: at the next show, Will does an extremely sexual duet with another king and makes eye contact with Hannibal again when the other king gets on his knees in front of Will and has his face right on Will’s crotch and Will mimes an orgasm. This makes Hannibal absolutely snap, and he confronts Will backstage as soon as he gets off stage and ambushes him in the dressing room, and fucks him right on the makeup counter and up against the mirrored wall while the other performers watch them from the other side of the room while both of them are very aware of it.

-many politicians and even the occasional president have visited the club, some going regularly and requesting private shows with certain performers (Will has been requested quite often, but never actually taken anyone up on it bc he likes to stay out of that mess). Hannibal eventually finds out that Will has privately danced for several of Hannibal’s socialite friends (he only refuses politically powerful people, and socialites are the majority of his clientele) and eventually confronts Will about it, accusing him of sleeping with them. Will just smirks and says that it’s ’confidential’ and Hannibal punishes him for it, well aware that it apart of his job, but does it more as a jealousy thing. when they flee to Cuba, Hannibal lets Will continue doing his job, just not the outright sexual portion of it, and he has to be at every single performance and backstage with him.

-so basically, Will’s kind of a prostitute I guess, but he doesn’t do it for money, he just does it because he likes it and he gets paid more than enough for his actual job so he doesn’t have to charge for sex

I think this is the most accurate assessment I’ve ever read.

I mean yes, in theory, he can be everything he likes, he could be above such things, they don’t have to matter to him, he could have a predilection for [insert personal choice here].

But canonically, he is just what he is. It’s fairly obvious, it doesn’t need to be brushed aside or bent out of shape because it hurts no one.

Our head-canons can of course be whatever we like them to be, but they are just that. They are still ours, and no one is taking them away. I think it’s sometimes turning the other way, and people get super narky trying to prove that he has to be canonically queer of sorts (whether that’s gay, pan, aro/ace…). Canonically, Morpheus (not talking about other aspects etc) feels sexual *and* romantic attraction, and it is limited to female-presenting beings. It’s on the page, it’s really that straightforward.

So yes: Dream is hopelessly romantic and, at least in his aspect as Morpheus, has a thing for women/female-presenting beings who are strong, independent and know what they want (so I get the slight sub vibes to, although a preference for women like that doesn’t have to translate into the bedroom and could actually be totally reversed. I think it’s safe to say he’s a giver though and *not* a pillow prince/ss. Calliope definitely let us in on that). Until he doesn’t 😂

I would go as far as saying that he is the personification of liking the idea of being in love (which includes sexual desire), but struggles with maintaining it. Not because he stops to love (we all know he doesn’t—once you have his heart, you’ll keep it, even after thousands of years), but rather because he doesn’t get that love is work. It doesn’t occur to him that love is not a state (that’s being *in love*), but an active process, and that he has to choose it actively every day. In relationship maintenance, he’s passive to a fault. He’s oblivious to the fact that he needs to keep on putting in the effort, simply *because* he is a hopeless romantic who thinks that once he is committed, that’s it. Why wouldn’t he just go back to work, because the woman must *know* she’s got him, right? No, my dude, that’s not how it works 😉

Thats an interesting question. Probably not one anyone but Morpheus himself could answer. As you said it means different things for different people. Sometimes sex is just a primal desire for carnal pleasure, sometimes its about developing a deeper connection, sometimes its about "love making" with someone you are intimately connected to, sometimes its simply an act for reproductive purposes.

From a human perspective it is very difficult to imagine sex and sexual intimacy from the view point of different beings. We are still only in the very early stages of understanding the importance of sex among other animals on Earth outside of just reproduction, and we know that some animals also have sex for pleasure or for intimacy bonding.

Morpheus, like all of the Endless, is a creature that exist so far outside of anything that we can truly understand. They are anthropomorphic personifications of concepts. What is sex to a dream? When a dream is such a loose concept in itself - dreams and wishes, and midnight sleeping hallucinations created by the unconscious mind... that sex is often a part of, sometimes in insanely bizarre and disturbing ways. Dreams and sex kinda go hand in hand, and Morpheus IS Dream, sooooo... sex is probably quite important to him in lots of ways...

Okay maybe I went a bit too deep there for a moment lol. Lets tackle this on a smaller scale. We know from the comics that Morpheus, as a human shaped creature, has sex. We know he has taken many lovers, only some of which we ever actually learn about. We know he has the ability to reproduce, since he has a son. We know he has human genitals (thank you Sandman: Overture for the full frontal nudity) and that as a male shaped being he prefers to take lovers of a female shape (though juries still out on what exactly happened between him and Lucifer with his smooth Ken-doll groin).

We know from Calliope's rather inappropiate speech at the Wake that not only did they have plenty of sex, that he was very very good at it, enough for Calliope to feel completely consumed by their passion. We know he enjoyed sex with Nada so much that he projected their love making to the entire collective unconscious at the time (one hell of a leaked sex tape there!) so not only is he an excellent lover who is very good at sex, he also clearly enjoys it himself if he can lose control that much from it.

I am hesitant to say that he only has sex with people he loves, though it does seem rather consistent, other than perhaps the situation with Titania which we never learn anything more about - the Audible audiobook briefly elaborates and has Morpheus and Titania very briefly mention that they slept together and it appears to be something they both think of fondly but certainly aren't in love so I wonder if Titania was just a casual fling? Otherwise I doubt they'd still be on good terms! (It's funny how fandom jokes that he commissioned a Midsummer Nights Dream as a way to insult Titania but in the actual comic this totally is not the case, he commissioned it to honour her and her people. Whatever happened between Titania and Morpheus, it did not end on bad terms.) So because of that, I can't really say that he only ever has sex with people he is deeply in love with.

Honestly I reckon that since he was created by a cishet allosexual man he was written with the sexual appetite of a cishet allosexual man. He probably isn't demi or ace and he probably isn't meant to be queer (though arguably a creature such as he could never be shoved into such a limited box as "heterosexual").

Note: I don't even want to attempt to get into the various "aspects" of Dream where there is a version of Dream for every living thing that dreams in the universe and therefore have to contemplate whether Dream has also had love affairs with creatures of all different types outside of regular human shaped female creatures though I am very curious to see if the King of Cats ever took a female cat lover (i mean honestly if regular Dream was totally cool flirting with Lady Bast...) in which case we can also argue that fem!Dream takes lovers, weird robot alien Dream takes lovers, Martian flaming head Dream takes lovers and so on and so forth.

There is also the interesting dynamic between Dream and his sibling Desire, because sex is what Desire is all about, and sex technically falls under their remit - hence the many many falling outs and tensions between them where Desire appears to be the principle instigator of Dreams romantic woes. I think that for this reason, Dream probably represses his desires for sex (and love) as much as possible, and if he were on better terms with his sibling, would probably seek out sex and romance more often than he does - Thessaly being an outlier because I fully believe he pursued her as an attempt at self sabotage as an awful rebound affair following the situation where he had to face his romantic failings with Nada, Calliope, and Alianora in short succession.

In some attempt at a conclusion: what does sex mean for Morpheus? Well, its something he likes, is good at, and if given the choice would probably like to have more of it, preferably with someone he is in love with who loves him in return, given his romantic inclinations. At the same time, bearing in mind who and what he is, there is probably nothing that even the absolutely filthiest of kinksters could come up with that would surprise him, nothing that he hasn't seen or used in some way to create the most bizarre sex dreams possible, and nothing that would shock or disturb him (it's not like he ever blinked an eye even on his trips to Hell). Though whether or not that means he is into kinky shit well, the only indication of his preferences we can conclude is that he likes strong confident women who can talk back to him, and impress him and treat him as equals rather than the powerful creature he is. So maybe he's secretly a sub? :P

Some of these focus on him being aro. But it's sort of a stand-in, in the comics, for him being both aro and ace. Anyway, I tried to pick stuff that highlighted the fact that Jughead wasn't a woman-hating gay-coded 'confirmed bachelor.' He was a romance-hating, often touch-averse, ace-coded 'confirmed bachelor.'

There are plenty of examples of the former, throughout popular media, during the first 75 years of Archie Comics. The queer-coding for them is completely different. The only similarity is that both types were often shown as recoiling from even the idea of relationships with women.

Some of the queer-coding for gay men included high voices, limp wrists, being an interior designer -- "feminine" attributes." Or:

"‘friend of Dorothy’, coloured handkerchiefs, or soft, pastel, violet clothing. Because film at the time was black and white, colour coding was either referred to, or often the handkerchief would be ‘perfumed.’ "In The Maltese Falcon (1941) a character sends in his business card and Sam Spade’s secretary notes it smells of 'gardenias.' A few minutes later, Spade smells the man’s handkerchief and doesn’t say anything but does raise an eyebrow high, clearly telling the audience ‘this fellow is queer.’.

By contrast, Jughead was never portrayed as anything but a clever, independent, slightly self-centered high school guy with a high metabolism and a passion for hamburgers. There was no winking at the audience. There were no gay in-jokes. There were no hints, in any decade, that maybe there was "a reason" he didn't like girls. That maybe he was just closeted.

And notably, when the series introduced a gay character, they did NOT go for Jughead. They had to invent a completely new person.

If they had ever been hinting that Jughead was gay, he would have been the obvious choice. It would have raised a lot of questions, and probably a lot of concerns, for them to introduce Kevin Keller instead -- or, at least, for them to introduce him and not imply that he and Jughead were going to end up together.

Honestly, the true test for any of these bigots who claim Jughead is gay should be, "Can you really picture him with Kevin Keller?"

Instead, mainstream pieces at the time said things like, "Jughead came out as asexual which explains why he’s never seemed interested in anything except for cheeseburgers."

Here are some good examples from older canon:

"Twelve Cent Archie references a story from Jughead 119 (April 1965) in which a machine built to identify Jughead’s perfect romantic partner inevitably self-destructs due to the impossible nature of its task."

"And though he wasn't a 'confirmed aro/ace' in the original comics and a few issues tried to explain away his behaviors with random back stories, over the course of hundreds of issues it was made obvious he preferred food to woman and constantly avoided romantic interactions and relationships and loathed such endeavours."

"What is it about aromanticism that makes showrunners pretend we don’t exist and fellow aces turn their faces when we say we do? What’s so bad about saying no to love that an aromantic asexual character is allowed to say he doesn’t like sex on TV, but not to say he doesn’t like romance? What is the difference? Why is it here where everyone draws the line? Why is it okay to not feel sexual attraction in this case, but not okay to not feel romantic attraction?

"I will tell you why. I’m not available to anyone. Neither is Raphael and Jughead, and lots and lots of aroaces, some of us not even as queerplatonic partners. There aren’t love stories to be told about us or sold about us. If Jughead and Raphael are made ace and aro, their ships sink, unless their fans are okay with queerplatonic relationships and most aren’t. For many people, for most people, if you take the romance out of someone, that someone loses its meaning, its interesting aspect. That’s how focused on romance our society is. Ships can survive without sex, but in a society so focused in romance that it can’t even comprehend queerplatonic relationships, they can’t survive without romantic love.

Noriaki Kakyoin: gay

Muhammad Avdol: Demiromantic/demisexual gay

Muhammad does NOT hit me as the type to fall in love/feel sexual attraction out of the blue. He needs his time. Plus i don’t think he thinks about it all that often. Destiny will do the job yadayada. Only attracted to men though. Women work in ways too mysterious for him to handle. He would start to feel something after like. A year or two of knowing intimately the person (go Jean-Jean we believe in you-). This king will probably ask his tarot before making any moves tho (shhhh he just wants to be sure)

Do you have any headcanons about how the different tribes celebrate pride month? Sorry if you have already done headcanons for this before.

No I actually haven’t done this before! To be honest I feel like gay and trans dragons are just naturally accepted in the dragon world and they’ve never really been questioned, the most controsvery the topic ever had was a Queen stepping down because he transitioned to male and didn’t want to be Queen anymore unless he could rule and be called King but I do think some tribes have some lgbt related traditions i can share! ( sorry if this answer is kinda lame, I just think the only things dragons hate each other about is dragon xenophobia and ableism because thats the only form of discrimination shown in the books )

Mudwings: While I disagree that Mudwings don’t take care of dragonets like it’s said in the books and I personally think the village raises the Mudwing dragonet, Mudwings have a generally aro/ace society, of course this doesn’t mean Mudwings aren’t allowed to fall in love and of course some Mudwings reproduce but romance isn’t like very common. There’s never been a second queen or a king by the Mudwing Queen’s side in history because Mudwings generally don’t distinguish romantic and platonic relationships. Which is often why most Mudwings are hit with giant culture shock visiting other tribes. Basically Mudwings are just like: we are all pals and friendly to dragons we like and if we don’t like you fuck you

Seawings: I like to think Seawing Queens historically are the most gay like I have no clue why I just have a distinct vibe and gut feeling that during mot Seawing Queen eras there were 1 or moresecond queens who were just their wives. I have no clue why I think this either, it’s just kinda a thing that’s an unknown trend in the sea kingdom.

Skywings: Skywing names typically tend to be more gendered and because of this, Skywings who come out as trans have a ceremony in which their wings are painted with the colors of a sunrise, and their parents or guardians give them a new name that matches up with their gender identity. Although some trans Skywings like the name they were given at hatching/it’s not really a gendered name so they just dick around with pretty colored wings for like an hour, although this ceremony will also take place if a Skywing is getting their name changed for any reason.

Sandwings: I don’t have any headcanons for them sorry :((

Icewings: Mfs really can be the trans flag. Like pink? Blue? White? All Trans flag colors that Icewings can be. In conclusion all Icewings are trans fuck you /j

Silkwings: I know lgbt flags wouldn’t technically exist in this world because like they don’t have the same history we do but Silkwings weave flags no questions asked ( also, Silkwings can basically be any lgbt flag in color scheme except flags with black in them? Gay as hell all silkwings lgbt fr /j )

Hivewings: Jewel Hive definitely does Drag like I know Dragons probably wouldn’t have drag because they don’t have the same form of exaggerated feminity humans do for Drag ( or masculinity drag kings i love you ) but fuck you they do they’re extra ( also I know drag isnt always lgbt but its so connected to our history I thought I would include )
