This is the story of the time I interviewed at Ubisoft.

When I was a teenager, I became obsessed with the Bioshock series and got it into my head that I wanted to do game design for a living. I'd never seriously attempted it nor did I know exactly what it entailed, but how hard could it be? I gamed!! I had ideas!! I said this to my teacher during a what do you want to be when you grow up talk, and she said, "Oh! My sister works at Ubisoft Singapore. I'll get you an interview."

Emails were exchanged, and someone at the company arranged a "quick chat" with me a couple of weeks later. It was for a QA tester intern position, which I reasoned was sort of like game design. After all, in the Sims 3 it's one rung on the ladder to becoming a game developer. Also I didn't want to anger my teacher. She was quite volatile.

Round 1:

I'd never done a job interview before. I put on a nice blouse and pencil skirt and heels, nervously applied and reapplied makeup which I normally did not wear, and showed up at the office building an hour early. Then as I went up the elevator I realised they never said what room it was. I couldn't very well email to ask now. I'd look like an idiot!! Fuck!! So for an hour, I just skulked around outside various glass doors peering into offices hoping there would be some receptionist around to ask, but there was practically no one there. The email only said "let's have a quick chat at 2pm on x date".

I was about to slink home with my tail between my legs when the interviewer called at the scheduled time. It was a phone interview!!!!! He didn't say that!!!!! I found a dingy secluded stairwell. As if to taunt me, one of the first questions he asked was "have you ever been to the building?"

Me, through gritted teeth: yeah! actually I'm here right now, haha... to scope it out, you know... get a lay of the land..... it's really big... Lots of glass walls...

Him: oh that's nice.

I don't remember most of the questions, but I do know he asked me what my favourite games were. I said Undertale and Life is Strange (they had come out that year), but he'd never heard of them. Maybe I should've said Far Cry or something but what if he quizzed me on it?

Round 2:

I should not have made it to this round. I was coasting entirely on the goodwill of my teacher's sister, who was high up the chain. She interviewed me next. I think her only question was whether I would be okay working long gruelling hours with little support and no overtime.

Me, blissfully unaware of crunch culture being a massive human rights issue in the industry: bring it on!!

Her: what? 🤨

Then she ushered me into a room to take a pencil and paper test. While waiting earlier, I'd frantically googled and memorised a bunch of Ubisoft games, so I could answer the one asking me to list eight of them. I figured I could have gotten away with saying Assassin's Creed and adding a random number to the back though.

The biggest problem was on the other side of the paper: a diagram of a gaming controller asking me to label the buttons. Here's the thing. I'm a PC gamer. Always have been. At the time, my only experience with console gaming was playing Little Big Planet with my best friend when I was twelve, at her house. And I wasn't very good at it! I think I fundamentally lack the hand-eye coordination for console gaming, but that's just a guess because I can count on one hand the number of times I've ever used a controller. And I can count on one hand the number of controllers I have in that hand! It's zero! I knew the wiggly antennae were for movement and the buttons on the sides did esoteric things that people will yell at you to press during crucial moments, but that was it. I ended up labelling the buttons the shapes they were (circle button, triangle button, square button etc).

The interviewer came back into the room after about 15 minutes and said I now had an hour to play an unfinished level of Assassin's Creed, identify as many bugs as possible, and record them on a spreadsheet. And even though she set me up at a computer monitor, I still had to use a controller. Are you kidding me! This was the Victorian era Assassin's Creed. I had never played any AC games before, so I didn't know what were bugs and what were features. Was "can't jump" a bug? Was "invisible wall surrounding staircases"? What was the format and lingo you were supposed to use when recording bugs? I made no progress towards the quest at all (I did not understand it or who my character was), just wandered around and wrote down things I noticed and didn't like until time was up.

Anyway, that's the tale of how I didn't get a job I was woefully unprepared and underqualified for and in retrospect didn't want all that much. Maybe what I really wanted was to be... was Ayn Rand.

Had a nightmare cuz i was under too many blankets and i was dreaming i was in a spanish class and my teacher was terrible and i kept taking quizzes but id like keep accidentally getting my quiz mixed up with other papers that were like previous assignments and i was so paranoid cuz i wasnt cheating but the teacher would walk around and see me fumbling these papers and be like 🤨 and i was like wuhhhh and there were like coonstantly situations like this and it was easy content so like i COULD have done it like my spanish is ACCEPTABLE for the basics but every time id get my shit together id be like how much time do i have left and theyd be like 5 minutes. And the class would all be done already so they were all standing around me in a circle watching me perform under pressure. I think i failed the class

wait i think i’ve got a similar blurb i might finally get around to writing some day (or maybe a full fic cus i love the idea<3 but i shouldn’t send myself on fic quests i’m Bad at them) But them being academic rivals and they have completely opposite work ethics like he doesn’t take it very seriously and cracks jokes but he’s still extremely smart and well spoken and gets good grades. meanwhile you’re very dedicated and studious and you try to work as hard as you can to best achieve your good grades but matty just finds you Stuckup because of all of it. so even though you’re both interested in the same subjects you end up Hating each other and clashing

but you’re paired together for a project and ofc there’s just all this Tension because you’re atrocious at working together and it inevitably Explodes. and that competitiveness is still Present even if you’re making out and practically ripping your clothes off so you’re trying to be the one who blows the other’s mind off. But i also think you would maintain that academic competitiveness AKA you keep quizzing each other while straight up fucking. like about to give him the greatest head of his life and you’re like “tell me the differences in themes between sentimentalism and romanticism” and then work as hard as possible to make sure he can’t even Think of the answer, let alone do more than incoherent moans. but he does manage to answer, though difficultly, and then he’s getting on his knees and quizzing You on amatory fiction while you feel your brain boil out of your skull but you’ll be damned if you give up and have him win….

I was doing sporcle quizzes and came across one for listing as many beatles songs as you can in like a minute. As you can imagine I was ready to lock in but as soon as the timer started my immediate first thought was Mean Mr. Mustard??? Like out of all their many hits the first beatles song to come to my mind was Mean Mr. Mustard?? That random song about the weird old dude who sleeps in a hole? Thats not even one that I think I’ve ever gone out of my way to listen to! What possessed me to put that as the first song??? 🤨

I was bored the Jan 12 2023 getting ready for school. I usually just listen to to tarot for entertainment and I usually get extremely accurate answers that in extremely resonate with

Anyways that day I was like whatever I don’t really care about my inner child has to say IMM just put this on as backup noise as I get ready for school

First of all I already was scared cause I picked the crystal that was pitch black and sparkly and dark then the first thing she said I that my inner child felt suffocated and was judged for everything she Identified and resonated/connected with and that she wanted to run away and grow up fast to get out of my conservative high expectation ass family and turning away from my family’s plan was just like insane

Which off the fucking bat I resonated with but I didn’t want I guess because it talked about running away at a young age which I want to do currently and have learned low key been planning it because of those reasons mentioned and switched to a different deck but that one didn’t resonated at all so then I went back the the first one I picked

And intuitively I feel this is my Puerto Rican side because I know I FOR SURE have brujas in my family on that side. It may be my black side but I do not resonate with hudo for some reason I feel it is because I am Afro Latina idk I just in my gut I feel that.

Then even more strangely and specifically enough they said my inenr child/me always loved supernatural things growing up outcast type characters (the villan characters) and also the main big one I love horror movies and as a child I thought I was weird because the scary spooky dark things like Halloween and Jason, chucky michael or monsters under the bed or ghosts never scared me (I ever this very clearly) my dad was OBSESSED with Halloween. (And true from which I did not like because it involved hurting people, i am very empathetic as wel) but yea I thought it wa because of Miesha and him liked those things but no. I was never scared of the body man. In fact I liked those things and was intrigued by them and I removed I used to just always laugh at the things that usually made others kids uncomfortable or scared another things I have always been DRAWN to witch craft (I’ve tried several times to do it) and weirdly I’m JUST NOW getting this memory and Kelis was like “you’ve always liked witch stuff” and I looked at her like this because I didn’t want to accept that part of me🤨 ( I

Also another memory popping up. I remember I was watching a eso tarot reading last month and it said accept and be both parts of yourself the dark and the light don’t only praise the light side. Which I though don’t only focus on your positive personality traits (being loving sweet and caring) also accept and be (don’t push down and suppress) the negative toxic traits I have (selfish materialistic lustful hot headed cocky etc.) which I think it did mean that but I think it literally meant this dark part of myself I’ve hidden that is me. And that’s why in that same reason don’t think of those parts as aesthetics. I think that’s why I got this message on Jan 12 2023 because it was clarifying that messages yes it was talking about toxic behaviors but it was also talking about who I am, my interests the things I connect to etc.

And she said I have always been drawn to withes supernatural fake spooky things that make people scared or uncomfortable and liking the villains of the story not cause I’m evil and relate to them but because I’m not intimidated by it I want to learn more about intrigued and I respect them like hey that’s what they believe etc. connected to these gifts from a young. I was scared of it myself and my family had those things seem evil and believe in gin them makes me a bad person so I literally suppressed it for so long because I’ve had to be @candygrlsworld for so long to get to be accepted into society

And in middle school I kept telling my self and others “be yourself” and “love everyone (not matter how different they are form u)” and to like duality (light and dark) and up until yesterday it was weird because I had no idea where those messages came from I wasn’t mimicking anyone my parents sure as hell didn’t tell me that etc. and it just came from within. Those ideas were beat down. But I think it was my ancestors talking to me and thru me

I'm doing well! I think when we last chatted I was STRESSED™ over everything and now I'm MUCH less stressed thankfully. I'm really not doing a whole lot these days. Just trying to enjoy the summer even though the weather is crappy af lately. Too hot to breathe one day and then raining off and on for hours. Can't do anything outside. I made a yummy pasta dish for dinner last night and other than that, my life is pretty boring.

So it's been one helluva month.

And it's not even over.

It's not been one helluva month only because of Kimmer's aunt Jacquie's fall at the end of last month that necessitated hip surgery after which Jacquie recovered some cognitive ability but her body in general was worse off to the point where she was transferred to hospice which is where Kimmer's right now managing Jacquie's care, being at her side every day and, like the rest of us...

Waiting.

It hasn't been one helluva month because of that, though. In fact, if the month was only about that it would've been a relatively manageable month.

What makes it the month that it is... is because that part of our lives was dropped wholesale into our show in progress. We just returned from our anniversary vacation in Orlando when, a few days later, Kimmer was on a plane to southern California ahead of Jacquie's hip surgery.

Now, the plan was to make sure Jacquie's pre- and post-op care was handled. The plan was to return her to her memory care home where she would successfully recover from surgery. The plan was for Kimmer to return home probably late the next week.

At this point, Kimmer's been there a month and a few days. Linzy went down for a few days a coupla weeks ago. I went down last week because Jacquie's health is like domino's falling and the broken hip was perhaps the second domino of something that was already ongoing.

All of that, by the way, is manageable on its own. Of course I doubt that anyone's life is composed of a single thing and ours is no different. Kimmer's, especially, is no different.

You see, when she got on the plane at the end of September, she took her show on the road. Her scheduled clients basically went down to southern California with her where she sees them online.

All her charting?

Done down there.

And then her doctoral program?

Yeah. She actually attended a coupla online classes during our vacation. We'd stop back at our room and she'd attend class for an hour.

Well, that program was just getting started and, very quickly, there were papers, quizzes, blogs, tests, formatting, reading, office hours, advisor meetings, dissertation prep, and so on. And the more time passes, the deeper into the obligations of the doctoral program she gets.

This is what I mean by one helluva month. Because aside from the doctoral work, the charting, and the clients, managing Jacquie's care has been a moving target. There are lots of pieces to it, not the least of which is Jacquie's ever-evolving condition and the family's plans on how to deal with the Now and the Future.

Now. Back at home, Linzy was keeping busy on top of her last-minute, whirlwind trip down and back from southern California.

Linzy's day job's at Off The Wall School of Music where she regularly and individually teaches a pretty all-ages group of students. She also does admin work and a bit of painting and finds herself enjoying not only the staff there but each of the students as well, both piano and vocal.

I think the age spread is something like 5 to 40. So there's never a dull moment and always a sense of adventure. 😊

Linzy's night job this month included performing at The Cottage in Bothell and Willows Lodge in Woodinville (actually the Willows gig is this Friday night). As well, she played another high-energy, next-level visual and sound production gig with Midnight High at Tim's Tavern in White Center. Lot of plans happening around Midnight High, by the way. The Future seems to be lining up for this band.

A little plot twist in the month: a pair of wisdom teeth in need of making an exit.

So that happened. 😬

Best thing, though?

I got a preview of the full album Linzy's gonna release under her Dream Patrol banner. It's a rough production draft of each of the songs she intends for the album... with a couple of the songs not yet painted with her Dream Patrol brush.

Many of the songs aren't complete. Some are. Every song, though, is on its feet. The Dream Patrol-ness of her work is definitely coming through. It's definitely another level or two up from her recently released EP, Made For TV, which features older songs.

These new songs, though, are in the process of making her first album an incredible stand-out piece of work. Especially as her Dream Patrol aesthetic allows her to be more cinematic, leaning into the emotions of her songs in a way that's not typically done.

And the live Dream Patrol show? What's it gonna look like?

Hand to God, it's fun just talking to her about it.

So that all happened this month, too.

As I said, I went to visit Jacquie last week for a few days, just like Linzy did.

My October's yeah. It's a number of different post-production jobs done on location and at home. The glaring omission from this month is that The Combat Wombats didn't participate in this year's 48-Hour Horror Film Project.

Kinda bummed about that. 😕

For me, the most striking thing about October's that Kimmer 'n I haven't been apart for this long since we were first married and she went to Atlanta, Georgia, to attend Emory University's Wound, Ostomy, Continence program.

We were talking about it the other day and agreed that it's much easier to do what we're doing now with all the technology at our disposal. Cell phones especially, any time of day and night which makes coordinating everything we've gotta coordinate so much easier. We can share our mornings and evenings wherever we happen to be in those moments, say goodnight right before we go to bed. And so on.

Back in the day, we each had to be right there at a landline, a telephone wired into the wall of our condo. It was definitely not as convenient and inflexible as hell.

We did it, of course. Just as we managed my production trips to Europe through Internet Cafes and email.

We worked with whatever we had and thank God that's all changed for the much, much better.

It was a month about Jacquie and logistics and family and sharing this experience and waiting.

Jungkook has to be prepared when he goes to his lecture next week. He's studying civil procedure and has a mock trial which he can't exactly prepare for other than memorizing some laws and court terms—with which you're helping, someone who isn't studying law.

You have to admit, you learned quite a lot from doing his homework and find yourself applicable to tutor him. You sat through enough footage of court trials and wrote enough research essays about criminal law to help him, but having Jungkook as your student... you're rather glad you didn't go down the education career path.

After about an hour of quizzing him on civil law, you realized you had to teach him the glossary first. Starting from scratch is another struggle on its own.

"Okay, now define jurisdiction."

You look up from the first pages of his textbook to see him cluelessly staring at you. Another beat passes and you circle the word to go back to it later. Both of you have gone over these words multiple times, but it takes Jungkook quite a while to memorize definitions. There are more circles than untouched terms; he is behind, but you hope you have the patience to catch him up in this one week you have.

"Hearsay?" When he's silent, you pester him, "It is self-explanatory, Jungkook. You can at least guess."

He feels rather small under your scrutinizing gaze, although from what you're seeing, he is unbothered and seems to care less than you do about his own course. His chest inflates when he takes a deep breath, swallowing his nerves before answering you. "Saying something you... heard?"

"Yes. Said by who?" 

To think he thought studying with you would be fun.

"The, um, witness."

"Is it admissible?"

"No?"

You nod at him, a smile growing on your face as you praise, "Good job. What's a plea?" Even you can admit your praise is underwhelming, but these are the easiest terms to memorize. He needs to take this more seriously.

"It's like, when the defendant pleads guilty or not guilty to a charge."

"What's a charge?"

"Christ woman, can we take a five?" He lets his back fall on his bed as he closes his eyes and lies under his hands. You're still sitting up when he peeks an eye open.

"No," is your firm answer. "You don't deserve a reward. Not until you at least learn twenty terms."

"A reward?" he laughs, as if taking six breaks by now have all been earned from his hard work. "You're acting like that course means jack shit. I'm not studying to become a fucking lawyer."

You roll your eyes at his enigmatic behavior. He is studious with the courses that do mean "jack shit", but it doesn't hurt him to at least pay attention when he asked you to help him. Maybe he thought it would make for a cute date or something, but you're only down for business when it comes to academics. He should know that.

With your knees bent and legs beneath you, you cross your arms. Coldly.

"You don't have anything to say? That's new," he alludes to your witty remarks from before.

"Maybe if you listened..."

He furrows his brows at you with a humoured smirk. "Are you saying I didn't? I always listen to you, I just space out sometimes."

"Yeah, when God forbid I say something that doesn't get your dick hard."

Did that really just come out of your mouth? Your eyes widen to saucers when your words register in your head, but you quickly recover to hide that you'd said that without thinking. It wasn't wrong.

Except Jungkook couldn't care less about your expression because he's too busy going hysterical with laughter. It took him by surprise for sure, but he finds it so funny to hear something like that coming from your voice; that sweet, innocent voice pointing out his sex drive like it's an insult.

When his laughter dies down a little, he lightheartedly mocks you, "Oh, she hurts. Since when do you bite back?"

"Since when do I not?" you retaliate sassily.

"Now, don't be like that," he grins, still clearly messing with you. He pats the space next to him, urging you to lie down as well. "Come on, I'll be nice."

You shake your head and look out the window to wait out his undeserved break—aside from ignoring him, of course. He's quick to catch onto your act, “I’m not going to study anymore today, so let’s just take a nap or something.”

“I’m not tired.”

“So cold,” he comments like he’s hurt by your aloof replies. Realizing your stance won’t waver, he stops trying to lighten the mood and sighs. “Listen, I really appreciate your help. Thank you, like, actually.”

This is the moment he realizes how stubborn you are. So stubborn that he has to take matters into his own hands and remind you that you can’t resist him by yanking you down on top of him. You try, though, by struggling against his embrace. He knows you like to cuddle, but you fight your desires nonetheless. 

“I don’t want to sleep!”

He clicks his tongue while you try to push at his chest to get up, but his strength doesn’t allow it; his arms have already trapped you. “Baby, I don’t want to argue.”

“I don’t have to listen to you for us to not argue,” you counter without faltering your attempts at escape.

And then you feel a smack that has you jolting back with a yelp and ceasing your fruitless struggles. The impact of his hand smacking your ass is evident by the loud sound it makes, and it stings for a second. He distracts the pain by roughly kneading your butt after and you whine for him to stop. 

"You're not leaving me a choice," he grunts in irritation. With his other arm effectively holding you down so you can't move, you're the one with no choice but to let his hand sneak under your skirt to grab onto your ass and abuse it further. It's probably red by now from his relentless squeezing. Another slap resounds in the room, but it's more gentle—which isn't saying much when it's your boyfriend's strong, calloused hand. The tender flesh already stings enough as it is. "I don't want to force you into listening to me, but you just feel like being a brat today."

"Because I said no?" you try to retort, but it comes out as a pathetic whimper.

"Because you said no," he confirms assertively. "Are you forgetting who's in charge?"

"Maybe I want to be in charge." You dig your nails into his shirt to emphasize and return the pain. It's futile.

"That'd be a reward," he uses your ideology against you with a sneer. "Have you earned it?"

"Have you?"

He pushes you down on him more forcefully. "Ah, there she goes talking back again. Was starting to miss it." He licks his lips with satisfaction. You scoff at him, ignoring how he's shaping your behind so roughly; it doesn't hurt as much.

The arm wrapped around your upper body trails to your bare bottom, now feeling you up entirely when he's confident you won't fight him anymore. A shaky sigh slips past your lips at the painful pleasure, and he chuckles. "I think you enjoy this type of discipline more. You just have to make it so difficult."
