Overall Reflections on the Course and Internship

Sports Media at Holmesglen is the course I should have done straight out of highschool. If I had known about it during my VCE, I would have applied for it at the conclusion of Year 12. Anyway I’m super glad that I eventually stumbled across such a wonderful course, with wonderful lecturers. What’s fascinating about Sports Media is that it is so specific, yet simultaneously so broad. There are plenty of straight ‘Journalism’ or communications courses, however it’s rare to combine the two plus more.

My writing skills were reasonable but my passion for sport and the media was large. Working in a class of 15-25 people made it feel like school, which was good because the lecturer could tend to our needs and spend more time explaining things or assisting than compared to a lecture with 300 students that one may find at a Monash Uni mathematics lecture.

Having four very different streams, if you will, was helpful because the units weren’t confusable and we are enabled to focus on each on separately. The fact that the subjects taken in a given semester were not alike was also a positive in the way that it made things quite interesting; the fact that we were developing skills in multiple different areas at once.

After four weeks, we had to shift online due to the pandemic, which wasn’t ideal social or studying wise. It was hard to not socialise with new-found mates and it was also difficult to find motivation to study with a distracting setup at home.

As students we had to adapt and I did. The first semester results came out and I had received a Distinction in all four units, much to my delight. I knew this would be hard to maintain, but was thrilled to work through the challenges and still get promising results.

The next semester went by quickly and so did the first semester of second year. Second year introduced us students to more hands-on learning, particularly with filming videos and editing. This was quite fun but also tedious at times. The VAFA projects were a good experience as we got to teamup with a football club and complete various assignments relating to them. This was headline by a social media strategy and a sponsorship proposal. The whole VAFA experience was long and tiring one but it helped us develop our editing skills, thinking outside the box and creativity.

The last year at Holmesglen went fast to start with and the main focus was about applying for internships and sharpening up on most of what we learnt throughout the course.

My internship was with Outer East Football Netball, who have their headquarters in Kilsyth, conveniently around the corner from where I live.

My internship was heavily revolved around writing; reviews, previews and more reviews. The researching of games and stats of players I’ve never heard of was fun, as was attending three Saturdays worth of Grand Finals (both football and netball). After writing the reviews of these Grand Finals, I was tasked with writing reviews of each clubs season. This was a slightly daunting, yet exciting task. Calling up coaches was a new experience for me but it ended up becoming second nature. The internship was exceeded my expectations as I was able to have my say on every club and Grand Final. My dream job would be involve a similar role to the one I played at OEFN.

The internship was a massive hook for me to join the course and the juice was certainly worth the squeeze.

Entry 9 - Quarter Times Article

It was the last week of November where I first began studying my internship. I was to complete at least 228 hours of my placement at Outer East Football Netball (OEFN). Starting placement so late into the year I felt panicked, and whether or not I would be able to complete my hours in time to graduate. 

On my first day starting in the office it was about 35 degrees, and I felt pressured into wearing pants and a nice shirt on such a warm day. I would have very much preferred to have worn a polo and some shorts due to the warm weather, however I thought dressing professional would give the better first impressions to everyone there. When walking in I realised how casual the dress code was, although I liked how I was safe rather than be under dressed on a first impression. 

Starting so late into the internship I was very keen to start whatever work the team at OEFN had for me. I was to start of for the first few weeks going through documents and counting signs with sponsor names before getting any work relating to my course (Image 1). This was not the case for me to be upset, as long as I had tasks to do to go towards my hours I was happy. Due to needing to finish my placement in less than two months, I had decided that I would be keen to go into the office everyday to speed my hours and enjoy my time there while I could. 

After my first week in office I began to do more work involved with Operations and Media which I was thrilled to receive. I was given the task to create multiple templates for the 2022 league fixtures for all divisions. Followed afterward was to create club fixtures for all the teams in the Outer East. These tasks alone were great to have, as I was able to work both in the office and remotely which would help speed my hours. 

Going into the Christmas break the tasks I had for me to work on was the club fixtures, and videos from John Howarth (head of umpiring at the Outer East Football Netball). I spent over 100 hours (half of my placement time) constructing these videos and distributing them for John. Details including editing, rendering, finding Australian Football League (AFL) clips, to help make the videos look amazing. 

With these tasks I was successfully able to complete my full 228 hours at OEFN in time. I felt by the fact I was going into the office everyday to do work, and seek any other tasks or opportunities that people wanted me to do showed my dedication and I hope that the team at OEFN appreciate that. Knowing the experience that I had gained at OEFN, I can definitely see myself being involved with this industry in my future. I plan on gaining more experience this year, as I would love to study in Sports Business as well. I am very thankful to the people at OEFN for having me there, I would not have wanted a better experience with how my time was there.

Dag 3 - Tsunami... ek bedoel sikloon - Update

Ek word vanoggend wakker na ek soos n mooi soet seun vroeg gaan slaap het gister aand. Voel nie te sleg nie en het net eenkeer, so 4uur wakker geword deur die nag maar baie vinnig weer aan die slaap geraak.

Staan op, praat bietjie met my liefie terwyl sy make-up en hare doen (sy is die beste liefie ooit en so n sterk vrou, die 6 weke gaan vir haar soos n cake walk wees).

Toe vandag doen ek my oefeninge. Ek vat dit ernstig vandag, meer as gister. Ek het nooi gweet mens kan so sweet deur te oefen net in n kamer nie. Ek kan voel ek het gewerk. Elkgeval, na die oefning doen ek my stretches.

Terwyl ek lekker stort word daar aan my deur geklop, klink asof die ou my deur wil afbreuk. By gese hulle het my kamer probeer bel ook en ek het dit ge-ignoreer want ek was in die stort.

Ek spring uit die stort, handoek om die lyf en maak heel verontwaading die duer oop. Dis die sekeriteit, hulle wil net laat weet ons mag nie uit die kamer nie... ek dog dis die hele punt van kwarentyn, jy mag nie uit die kamer nie. Elkgeval, hy se daar is n Tsunami oppad.

Die man se engel is natuurlik nie net n bietjie gebroke nie so hy bedoel eintlik sikloon want one het mos nou die waarskuwing gekry. Ek gaan heel ontsteld wees as dit n tsunami is want ek is aan die agter kant van die gebou en kan nie die strand sien nie.

Hy het gese hulle sal ons laat weet as alles okay is, seker so 11uur se kant. Nou ek hoop dis wat hy bedoel het en nie dat hulle ons gaan evacuate nie, ek hou van my kamer.

Update - So bleikbaar was daar gister aan n helse 8.1 skaal aardbewing in New Zeeland wat gemaak het dat daar orals nou Tsunami waarskuwings is. Ek dink hulle is net ekstra versigtig by ons, mens kan die amptilke waarskuwings areas sien op google, maar nou ja, die naweek kom die sikloon ook nog.

Op n ander noot, ontbyt vandag het n nuwe hoogte punt bereik. Weer n halwe brood, en ek weet dis net die helfte want dit het elke keer n toe punt so mens kry nooit n stuk net uit die middel nie.

Ek digress, n halwe brood, vrugte sappie, botters en extras en dan...... n creme brule puddingtjie... ek sal hom maar bere vir later.

Nou gaan ek eers my koffie klaar maak, n stuk brood en botter eet en begin werk.
