Aj being the menace he is, and you being the most gullible person in the world was surely a recipe for disaster. I guess that's his way of affection. He's actually so mean, but he doesn't want you to know he means it lovingly, like romantically lovingly.

The amount of times he's told you the most bewildering piece of information ever, only then to follow with, “you fucking idiot, I was lying!” or a “no.” whenever you asked if he was really telling the truth, all while laughing at you of course.

Niko, the unhelpful best friend he is, always teases him about you, right to your face, completely dumping his efforts of trying to keep his feelings away down the drain. It's not like Aj isn't obvious either, like you could tell from a mile away that something was odd with how he acted with you. I mean, you couldn't tell, but everyone else could.

The amount of times he was called out during a beta squad shoot — where you were invited as the guest, for staring at you was absolutely outrageous, but you know what's worse? You thought it was a joke! You thought that, ‘oh they need to stop bullying Aj for shit he didn't do,’ when he was literally just staring at you the entire time instead of paying attention.

There isn't a single universe he doesn't bully you for your height, like how are you shorter than him?! Seriously, how. Also brings you up every time someone calls him shorter, always yapping about how you're shorter or whatever. It's really funny. It's also funny that he absolutely violates you with his insults, but always also defending you whenever someone tries to insult you. Not direct defending, but more like saying that they're worse than you and blah blah blah.

It feels like everyone in the beta squad — and their other friends as well, know about Aj's crush, crazy how you don't know. You know what the biggest giveaway is though? His pet peeve is physical touch, where the hell did that pet peeve go when he's around you. He isn't necessarily having physical touch with you a lot, but if you ever tried to initiate out of the blue, he didn't exactly deny it.

He's such a cutie. One time you tied up his hair into pigtails for whatever reason, he thought he looked ridiculous and everyone laughed at him, and you also did cause he looked adorable you couldn't lie. He would never actually admit it, but he wants you to play around with his hair again, he really liked it.

Absolutely no way you don't have one of his silly hats. Like, one time in a video, he brought a new one, and at some point you took his hat. Like just straight up went, “don't mind if i do!” he didn't mind of course, maybe just acted like he did but he let you wear it the rest of the video. He definitely 'forgot' to take it back — he wanted you to keep it, something about you wearing his hat, and keeping it made him feel funny, and when you texted him about it, he said not to worry and to just keep it. So that was his plan hm.

Following the last paragraph, the clip where you took his hat became one of the main intros to many ship edits of you both. Funfact: he watches those ship edits. For sure, secretly smiling like an idiot when he watches them. However, the comments he leaves say otherwise, like he replies with full on “oh hell nahhhh�� but there was this one time that a fan got him to watch one while he was streaming. He couldn't hide a smile from forming on his face, no matter how hard he tried. Unsurprisingly, that also became an edit intro.

Definitely has you come over sometimes to stream with him, or to hangout whenever you both aren't busy. What a coincidence that Niko is somehow always out when you come over, Aj tells you he's busy, but Niko would tell you he wants you both to have some alone time. Streams with you are just full of teasing and bullying. Apparently, that's both of you guys' love languages.

You wouldn't trade him for the world. His blonde highlights, evil ass but also cute most of the time smile, his funny personality, the way he speaks, the way he acts around you, and everything else, is all so important to you. Especially that hat you stole from him.

Was gonna post this on tuesday, but i accidentally posted it now. Whoops. Hope you guys enjoyed it though! First Aj fic aaaagh.

Three years ago, I was a hopelessly young and naive 30ish year old who had only watched the Star Wars movies, so my only exposure to clones was them being essentially background characters in two prequel movies, and the soldiers who tragically exterminated the Jedi (under Palpatine's orders, of course).

I neither liked nor disliked them. Frankly I didn't think about them enough to like or dislike them.

Then, three years ago, watching the first two seasons of The Mandalorian convinced me to watch The Clone Wars and Rebels. Yoda and then Plo Koon talking to the clones about their individuality and importance piqued my interest and made me start really paying attention to them, the Domino squad story made me invested in certain characters, but it was the Umbara arc that was the definitive turning point for me - I love the clones.

And then I watched the Bad Batch intro story and I loved the clones even more.

So here I am, having finished my fourth complete rewatch (not counting one-off story arc rewatches) of The Clone Wars and working through yet another rewatch of Bad Batch (first complete rewatch since season 3 aired), just thinking about how much my opinion of the clones has changed in the past few years. And hoping against all odds that Disney/Lucasfilm has more clone-centric (or even clone-involved) shows in the works.

what are my credentials in commenting on this matter? Well. Glad you asked. I've been a onep fan for admittedly not that long, but in that time (like... 8-9 months?) i've messaged one of my close friends. hm. discord receipts.

681 times about him. also you know that one post? yeah from "smoker. smo-yan." to "i fucking love him good god" that's all me. glad we've established my expertise here

2. look at him. first of all, im raising my eyebrow at you anon because woahhhh looking 60 is fine for me. just perfect, actually. they grey/white hair is fucking wonderful to me personally considering i also love rayleigh and beckman.... also just like. every other part of him. he has huge boobs that he refuses to cover because he's allergic to shirts for some reason. he has leather gloves (would suck on any day). when also jacketless, he wears his jitte with a thick strap over his chest that is So droolworthy. he has a Fat Ass. search up stampede smoker because that's like his peak look. his face scar is endlessly sexy. the slicked back hair (more recently) and the more messy spiky look from earlier in the series both serve in contributing to his bad boy persona, which leads me to my second point: the dichotomy of personality.

3a. part a - the bad boy delinquent persona. if you only take him for his surface level actions and words, he seems a little bit mean. like every gruff, rough-around-the-edges mad dog delinquent type. just look at him as a marine cadet, head shaved and frowning. look at the illustration oda did of him as a kid, holding a nail-imbedded bat. he's loud and brash and commands a whole marine squad, he's big and always has a frown on his face and he's arguing and cursing and you just expect him to be unkind. but. But.

3b. But he's not. he's not unkind at all. He's not nice, maybe, but he's so kind. when tashigi has her crisis about justice vs the marines vs "doing the right thing" are often, actually, at odds with each other, smoker supports her in his own gruff way. tells her he'll be there to support her. and. the scene of all time;

4. la pièce de résistance - his character introduction. oda does character introduction SO well in general (see: mihawk, zoro, galley-la shipwrights, countless others) but the smoker intro is my top intro of all time, it's SO good. to recount to those who don't know, we basically see this big scary gruff guy - shirtless, obviously strong, all spiky hair and big stompy boots - and a kid bumps into him and spills their ice cream all over him. He obviously has a reputation as a powerful guy, because the villiagers around all beg him for forgiveness, ask him not to hurt the kid - and yknow what he does? He says to the kid "looks like my pants ate your ice cream," drops a few coin into their hand, and tells them to buy more scoops next time. that's the most attractive thing i've ever seen. he does masculinity like NO other. gods.

5. strong moral compass - doesn't often agree with general marine guidelines. he's pretty shit at being a marine, honestly. tells the brass to go fuck themselves often. follows his own sense of justice, and even though he hates pirates.... temporarily allying himself with them is not off the table, not if it means more justice (in his eyes). he doesn't like innocent people being killed. in stampede, even as everyone attempts to leave the island in light for abuster call, he stays because there must be something he can do. hina sighs and calls him stupid for it, but takes tashigi koby and helmeppo away anyways, showing that this has happened before, likely multiple times.

6. can he stub those cigars out on me. please. please. plea- [comically large piano falls on me, cutting off my speech]

And he does have one of the best intros. I hope they keep it in the live action

Okay I need to know what this "Deleted Timeline" thing is. At the very least the designs of the characters

there's further discussion of time loop theory down on the blog! the basic idea is just - there was a previous timeline where Kris wasn't possessed and things went wrong, and the game is about Gaster meddling horrendously to produce a fixed timeline. i also feel like the shadow shards and a few other things are maybe tied to the past timeline

then from there, things I think are Likely/make sense with the evidence:

-Dess died in the original timeline, and quite possibly Kris was there/feels responsible

-Susie and Kris did not get along nearly as well and were tense at first (the shadow crystal view of Susie, newest new girl) but maybe got close later (one of the bits of timeline theory evidence is a cut version of the intro sequence where it's Susie yelling for Kris to wake up like they're dying)

and things that are wild conjecture:

-darkner gaster, the secret boss squad, and Kris were in collaboration, basically trying to bring the roaring and seize the angels power to make a new world

-kris was involved specifically bc of guilt over Dess but also just felt generally miserable and wanted to try again in a better world as someone else. very depressed doing terribly

-so yeah Kris was the primary Knight

-because they had like the secret boss knowledge of the world beyond and the conviction the world was ending soon they came off as detached, aloof, and kind of smug a lot of the time. together w never adventuring w Susie this put them at odds bc Susie thought they were looking down on her and Kris couldn't bring themself to try

-susie was the main one doing fountain closing, maybe with Noelle and maybe Ralsei? not sure if Ralsei existed lmao

-eventually Kris and Susie were forced to interact directly when things got serious, they found out they liked each other and got along and were forced to become friends

-kris changed their mind on the plan bc they'd realized that the existing version was very much just predicated on their own guilt and they wanted to like pause and put things on hold and work w other ppl, lightners and darkners, to figure out a better world and also maybe more safely do things instead of going full tilt into the roaring and such

-Gaster Did Not Like That

-everything went to hell, Kris died, Gaster tried to open a Fountain solo and cut through into the Void and fell into his creation

-in the void he had some regrets about the whole thing.

Seren's Studies: Odd Squad UK -- "A Dish Served Odd" Episode Followup, Part 1

As opposed to cold, which, really, would just freeze your mouth and your brain.

We continue the followup train with one for "A Dish Served Odd". This one will also be split into multiple parts, though I don't think we'll amass a whole five pa- five parts?

Five parts...dear God.

Below the break, get Orli the tourist, a trifler who trifles trifingly, and Odd Squad: The Movie. (Okay, I'm sketchy on that last one, but no one's mentioned it yet besides me and I need my curiosity satisfied.)

And as usual, make sure you've watched the episode first before proceeding. There will be spoilers.

Let's start with the intro, which has, of course, Orli narrating it. Now that her character has been revealed in the flesh, we can have her take over narrating duties from Captain O.

Now, as for this thing...capital sin against Olive. Go to jail. No cards can get you out.

I see they have no qualms about dropping the spoiler of Opie being promoted to the Department of Help.

I also see Orla will have some competition in the violin-playing department.

The difference here, of course, is that we will get no lesbian French brides. Instead we have gay triangle villain, and that is enough for me.

(I do want more, though. But PBS has always been minefield-walking on this stuff.)

Only a few new bits in the intro; otherwise everything else is recycled.

Except for this shot, which the fandom has analyzed to hell and back. I don't really feel like throwing in my two cents just yet; still weighing on doing a Seren's Study where I put in my "once and for all" opinions on the season/series.

And your writer for this episode. I...can't say much about him, because 1) I haven't done the research on him yet and 2) I need to get over the Lightning McQueen brainrot first before I do so.

So with this, we get a first look at Ozzie's and Orli's new desks. Quite a vast difference from the desks in the original series/S1 and S2 -- we have fancy new chairs, Microsoft computers over Apple ones, and desks that actually have a lil' shelf underneath them but, as far as I can see, no drawers. I dig it!

Orli up and snatchin' the paper out of Ozzie's hands is funny, too.

"Done? What done?"

"Everything done."

"...Orli, it's only been a minute and 40 seconds."

I'm sorry, this does make sense considering where she was before, but the fact that the girl requires a morning nap and then an afternoon one already makes my fucking day.

How she's able to even sleep within THE FUCKING NIAGARA FALLS is beyond me, though and I can only assume the answer is "I put small animal tranq in my juice, twice a day."

(Look, in the Oddverse, tranq is Fancy NyQuil. Everyone loves Fancy NyQuil. It's like liquid opioids, for kids, safe to take!)

Ozzie outright commenting on said naps being twice a day was something I was not expecting, and now I'm laughing way too loudly for 2 in the morning.

In Ozzie's absolute lack of defense...partners solving cases without each other is fairly common. If he were familiar with Olive and Otto, and Olympia and Otis, he'd, y'know...probably know that shit.

"Don't you think we should do this on our day off?" the idiot asks, knowing that Orli being there does not solve the oddness crisis despite what "Odd Ones In" wants people to believe and that "a day off" does not exist as a concept.

Ok. Hear me out. Amphibia Odd Squad au. As in the PBS kids show. I’m not the only one who watched that right

IT’S SILLY BUT

the idea of Sasha being the stand in for Odd Todd, Anne (or O’Anne??? I guess??) being the stand in for Olive, and she and Sasha being ex-partners like in the show. Her new partner (and the stand in for Otto) just joining the squad being O’Sprig. O’Marcy being the scientist and Oscar stand in. O’Polly being the Orchid equivalent character. O’Ivy and O’Maddie as any number of the ridiculous child squad. Is there an explanation for the Amphibians being amphibians?? Sure, and there could be any number of them!! You can just come up with some ridiculous explanation for why and it works!!

I find the idea of the Toad Tower incident in the show just..being Sasha going a little crazy and deciding to turn against her oddness-solving society and CAUSE oddness instead really funny. You can work in the whole trio drama in there somehow still and say Sasha, O’Anne and O’Marcy were friends before Sasha’s rebellion, and still had their unhealthy dynamic. Maybe in this world the major conflict’s root cause has something to do with O’Marcy being told she will be removed from the squad by her parents?? And like in the show she does something she hopes will solve this only to create more chaos inadvertently. O’Sprig hearing these whispers about O’Anne’s old partner and being super curious about it but he can’t ever get too much information about it, and then when he finally sees Sasha for the first time he’s all ‘this is the person everyone won’t speak of???’

I don’t really know I’m not taking this too seriously.. I just think a version of Marcy making a bunch of -inators and a version of Sasha creating pienados and a version of Anne just being accustomed to complete nonsense on the daily is really really funny. Plus it lends itself to the frog children being present as well which is a lot of fun. I like to bounce this idea around in my brain

(Also, for anyone who didn’t watch/ doesn’t know about Odd Squad.. they ‘are an organization run by kids that investigates anything strange, weird, and especially odd. Their job is to put things right again’ (intro music plays)

Also, all their names start with O. That is why I slapped an O in front of every character’s name, except Sasha, because in the show Todd never had an O at the beginning of his name. She gets to be special. The O in front of the names makes them look really strange but also it’s just really funny in how terrible and awkward it is )

Your a Young operator, new to the area as you learn about the people around you. Your given to your task Chief, Mr. Commander Captain Price. You were assigned to his Squad after your hardcore training to even get into a squad. You were a little upset, hoping to get the same squad as your brother but you were set with your 2 best friends, Luna and Fiona.

Little did you know how big of a Job it would be to be a part of Squad 141. Between how your 1 of the 4 females on the squad, to getting praised by Price for your strengths and everyone getting a little odd around you, Being here, would be a task itself.

The mess hall/food fight scene in "Aftermath" is legit one of my favorite scenes of the entire show, mostly because we learn SO MUCH about the characters in 4 minutes:

- The initial conversation with Tech being dry and logical, Wrecker being loud (and none of his teammates even bat an eye at this), Crosshair being a man of few words but bringing the snark when he does speak, and Hunter primarily being concerned with rumors that are likely to impact his team.

- Then Omega joins the table, all of them are varying levels of confused, Tech and Hunter are the first to recover enough to engage with her, but while Crosshair is in the background pretending to be disinterested he is still listening in closely.

(Also I can't help but giggle at the increasing concern in Omega's voice when she tries to get them to recognize her - I can only imagine her thinking "I know about accelerated aging but I didn't think memory loss started THIS soon!")

- "You WANT to sit with us? That's never happened before." In the intro story we get a good idea that the Bad Batch members generally don't fit in well with the regs; but this one line makes it clear that the Bad Batch members have ALWAYS been outsiders, shunned by the other regs, and have only really ever had each other.

Then we get more in-depth with each individual character based on how they react to Soup Clone's insults and the fight:

- Omega understands what it is like to not fit in, she's determined to take the opportunities she has to be with the Batch, and she's loyal and feisty: she won't just sit back and let others insult her friends.

- Wrecker starts out having no idea what to make of Omega, but immediately backs her up after she confronts the reg, and when the reg insults her ("Know your place, lab scrapper") he's ready to throw hands food.

- Hunter was shown in the intro story to pretty much be the intermediary between the regs and his squad, and here his default is still to try to defuse the situation; but as soon as the fight turns physical, he doesn't think twice about hitting the clone that's rushing Hunter's squad.

- Tech sees a fight going down and just jumps right in, no hesitation at all about defending his team.

- Echo's exasperated "Oh, not again" cements him as one of the most level-headed members of the group and reinforces the idea that the Bad Batch and the regs are almost always at odds (also makes me wonder just how many times this sort of situation has happened in the few months Echo has been with the squad); but despite the fact that Echo was a reg, he is still loyal to his current squad and is willing to fight on their behalf.

- Crosshair is interesting, in that I think there's a subtle detail underlining the effect of the inhibitor chip even before it was intensified: in the intro story, Crosshair was definitely the most openly antagonistic toward the regs, but here he sits quietly and doesn't join in the fight... At least, not until someone messes with him directly - and then it's game over for the regs as far as he's concerned. (Also the fact that he takes out 2 regs in one go will never fail to make me laugh.)

negative traits: hates the sound of anyone eating, any repetitive sound really and supposed to or not she will mute you. is horrific before coffee, always seems to be wearing the same thing but has lots of the same clothes, double standards on loyalty.

positive traits: will protect anyone she decides is worth it, even to the death, depending on who you ask she's rather lenient with the codex if she's decided it's for the greater good. can source just about anything, will remove noise for anyone to get a really good nights sleep.

A SHORT INTRO:

Born to two scribes, both of whom were loud and against the rider lifestyle there was not a single person that expected Aliana to walk her way towards the riders quadrant and face the parapet without a single ounce of training in her. whilst she had height for a girl, she had no muscle mass, no balance and no one that was going to be looking for her to succeed.

She did however, making one of the first bonds in her threshing year, just third to land on the fighting field as her red daggertail chose her. She has been trying to prove that she was worthy of him ever since and to this day she often finds herself staring at him in awe whenever he is around her, something Zaliki finds rather odd and irritating.

Her manifestation was no surprise to anyone and came about mid challenge day when suddenly, everyone was silent after the noise got to much for her and she drew every piece of sound she could cling to and threw it away.

Ali no longer speaks to her parents given her choice, but wouldn't change it, she's quiet and sometimes impatient with a lot of people, but she was born to be a rider and she's a damn good one. Unknown to everyone, she keeps a hidden box of letters updating her parents on things that have happened other since she joined the school, just incase one day they change their mind and want to know about her and she forget anything they might think was important.

Is a newly appointed section leader, trying not to let power go to her head, but she really does have natural leadership skills no one ever thought to test in her.

CHARACTER QUESTIONS:

what is/was their family and early life like?: Aliana was born to two quite scribes who never wanted a shining light on their family. They forbid Aliana from entering the riders quadrant and told her that she would not be welcome with their family any more if she chose such a path of violence. She packed her bags and walked out on them the day they offered her an ultimatum. 

do/did they have any skills and/or interests before coming to basgiath?: Before she came to college Aliana liked to learn to make things with her hands, deciding from a young age that she was going to be a rider despite her parents wishes she was always outside finding something she could turn into a survival weapon, convinced one day it would be her and her dragon against the world. She also likes to cook but it's wise to stay away from that, she was taken off breakfast duty very quickly after her whole year was throwing up following her attempt at breakfast muffins. 

why did they choose to attend basgiath?: They wanted to be something greater than her parents, she wanted to be the people that stories are written about, not a person that tells the story. Whilst she will always claim not to be power hungry, there was something in her seeking to be a very part of her own legends. 

what are their goals for the future?: Aliana intends on being a general one day, she is still bitter that she didn't manage to make it to Wing Leader but she knows that it's still possible should anything happen to any of the current leaders and intends on staying in a fighting position for that to happen. She knows that right now, her goal should be stay alive, but she really cares about staying known in history so that walking out on her parents never turns out to be for nothing.

ODD EYE CIRCLE <Version Up> - Album Review

There’s no word that describes how eagerly I have been anticipating this EP. I don’t believe I talk quite enough about LOONA in my reviews. That’s sarcastic, of course. I probably mention them at least once per review, as they are my ult group and have incredible music. With all of the members being recently freed from their unfair contracts with Blockberry Creative, five of them including the OEC squad (Jinsoul, Kim Lip, Choerry) have joined Jaden Jeong’s new label MODHAUS. While no music from the full 5-piece girl group ARTMS has been released yet, Odd Eye Circle has come out with a new EP. It will be interesting to see the JJ sound continue into the modern era of LOONA, and to see if their sound resembles the 2017 Mix & Match or has changed. I’ll listen to each of them three times and rate them afterwards. Keep in mind that a five on my scale represents neither like or dislike.

Did You Wait? - 6.5

Yes. Yes I did wait. It’s surprising to me that all of the clips of Blockberry-published OEC songs haven’t been copyright claimed. Let’s hope it stays that way. As for the intro itself, the synth is uncannily similar to the one in Chaotic and Starlight on the 2017 EP. It brings a modern twist to it though that makes me anxious to hear what the title track will have to do with it.

Air Force One - 9.5

This song embodies the direction that K-pop has been dying to follow for a long time now. Groups like NewJeans and STAYC have started to move the girl crush sound to a more “lo-fi” and minimalistic sound. The whole first verse has this very soft feeling to it that’s reminiscent of that. The chorus is very fun and addictive and the crunchy, silvery vocal processing is fascinating. The hook feels like it’s keeping you on your toes. On the other hand, the breakdown is absolutely chilling, maximizing that vocal effect and drawing out the rich synth pads to create a simultaneously beautiful and terrifying ambiance. When the chorus comes back around, it seems to have more meaning and the synths hit way harder. Very well done track.

Je Ne Sais Quoi - 5

The introductory few seconds of this song make it seem almost like a lo-fi hiphop song, but when the beat comes in it becomes clear that this song actually has more of a relaxed dance music feel. I don’t love what’s been done with the vocals on this track. The processing on their voices is a little over the top and reminds me of some of what I didn’t like from tripleS’s vocals. The beat feels somewhat squashed and garbled unfortunately. I think it has the potential to feel much larger than it does, but because of those factors coupled with my general dislike for the melodic content, it’s certainly not my favorite song but also has elements to it that I like.

Lucid - 7

This is the 1000th song I’ve seen with Lucid in the name, I swear. Ooh, so soft and comforting at the beginning though. It has a lilting flow that makes it auditorily resemble the slowly rising and falling waves of a calm ocean in the morning. The vocals in the refrain have the same sort of rising and falling sound, and the way they drop lower reminds me of Zero (NewJeans) which is a very rare thing to do in a pop song. The vocals themselves aren’t done quite as I would look for similarly to Je Ne Sais Quoi though. As more elements enter, it becomes more bouncy but stays very peaceful. A little more variation musically could help this song be even better.

Love Me Like - 4.5

With the addition of this song, it’s becoming clear that this album generally has a repetitive chill dance vibe featured in all of the songs so far. This one is interesting but the beat feels a little garbled like the previous couple songs. It’s much more upbeat however, with more of a R&B and disco fusion beat. It can get pretty boring, that would be my main critique. More depth would be helpful, certainly.

My Secret Playlist - 4.5

This one feels much more like classic early LOONA. The sound is generally more spacious and wide. It reminds me particularly of LOONA 1/3's stuff. The actual songwriting is pretty dry though, and the chorus is very disappointing. It could definitely be worse though. That’s basically all I have to say. It’s fine.

Final Thoughts

This EP is a very big deal for LOONA, a symbol of progress and freedom from BBC. I personally feel that the songwriting and production on basically every song feels pretty half-assed. I think that Lucid with its ocean-like production and the terrifying and fascinating Air Force One are definitely the two with the most thought and effort in them. I don’t see much in Je Ne Sais Quoi, unlike many other fans. Despite the meaning of this, I didn’t love the content itself. I give this album an overall score of 5 for that reason, with my favorite song being Air Force One. I’m really hoping for good things in the future of LOONA, ARTMS, and other affiliated groups. We’re just going to have to hold out and hope that JJ pulls it together a bit. Thanks for reading!

Seren's Studies: Wordsville's Official Release -- Is It Really an Odd Squad Clone? (Part 1)

You can bet your fine ass I am, because, to put it nicely, the fuck is this?

All right. Anyway. So part of what I used to weaponize my YouTube channel for was doing Seren Reacts videos on new PBS Kids shows. Basically, I'd take the first episode they'd upload and react to it. Since I don't have the capacity to actually do that for this show, and since I did tell you all I'd do a Seren's Study on Wordsville when it came out and I had a chance to see it...here ya go. I watched the first episodes of this thing so you don't have to!

...Uh...well...if you don't want to, anyway.

In this essay, I'm going to put the final nail in the coffin as to the issue of whether Wordsville is truly an Odd Squad ripoff or not. I'll also be picking apart the first episode screencap by screencap, just like I used to do in the good old days of Odd News.

(At the very least, the America's Funniest Home Videos animation I'm not a fan of. At least with Tom Bergeron it was funny.)

Look at that, they even threw in a goddamn university degree like these kids up and went to Harvard. Because Odd Squad agents didn't go to university and aw God man you gotta be shitting me.

Man, the theme even follows the same schtick of Odd Squad agents explaining who they are and what they do! I guess that's one for the Half-Ass list...

(And on a related note, because I don't think I brought this up: Gabby's actress sounds like she was on Odd Squad at one point, but hell if I know where. Guess I'll know when the credits come up.)

Hm. Hah. Just like, y'know, Olive and Otto, Orla and Omar at one point in ti- really, do I have to keep going?

You could tell me this was an Odd Squad sequel spinoff in disguise and I'd 100% believe you.

(Also is that...is that a rainbow bead design in the upper right there? Does Sly is gay or am I just going nuts because this episode was uploaded in Pride Month and Sinking Ship already has some LGBTQ+ rep under their belt?)

I will say that, unlike with Odd Squad, I appreciate them not making this out to be some stupidly thinly-veiled Zoom or Skype parody. It looks like a new fresh platform that isn't supposed to reference anything. I like that!

...Nah, not even I'm desperate enough to pry an Odd Squad jab out of this title.

I am, however, getting flashbacks to Wonderful Precure and people speculating about the colors in the title. If this were one of those seasons we'd have a group of five with a blue-green Cure as the leader, which would melt the Internet. Definitely. Maybe.

Also, unless they're working on Odd Squad UK and we don't know it yet, Christin Simms is not an Odd Squad name I recognize. Seems they've worked on pretty much every modern Sinking Ship series but Odd Squad, which I choose to take as intentional just due to the similarities between the two series alone. I mean let's be honest...if it were an Odd Squad writer, it would really only reinforce a few of my points.

So I've chosen to watch "The Case of the Disappearing Donuts", mainly because I believe that's the episode that was featured in the sample script I talked about in the previous Seren's Study. Just...y'know, as a heads-up. I tried to go for the first episode.

And needless to say...I'm not sure if this is it (TVO released five episodes in a bundle and your guess is as good as mine as to which one is the series premiere) but I can already see a striking difference with Odd Squad, in that yes, Wordsville does indeed launch us clear into the plot without any warning. Yeah yeah they explained it in the intro but I do not care. Let me get to know your characters first!

Once again, I will reiterate for you all: this show being purely digital instead of live-action completely hinders it. It is 2024. The pandemic is not an excuse anymore. I'd get more enjoyment out of this if it weren't two people communicating through mock Apple laptops.

And if you aren't getting what I'm picking at, imagine if, for the nearly ten years it's been on, Odd Squad was a purely-digital show. Would we get the worldbuilding? The lore? The character development? The funny interactions? No, no, no, and no. It's like the difference between talking to someone in video chat and talking to someone in real life. One boosts your health. The other one, not so much.

Clearly they didn't really try for this bit in the audio department, because this cookie is all about that bass with absolutely no fuckin' treble.

(To be fair, though, Odd Squad has soundbytes like this from time to time too. So I can't really complain all that much.)

Something I was shocked to find out about Wordsville: each episode is all of 8 minutes long. Which...doesn't really help the series' case because the pacing is utterly atrocious. For Odd Squad, which has mostly 11-minute episodes, the pacing is smoother for a lot of them. I can take my time, understand what's going on, and enjoy what I'm seeing. Hell, even Tiny Time Travel's pacing isn't awful for the short time it has, and I wasn't gonna even touch that show for this Seren's Study because it's not made by the same people outside of Tim...until people brought up similarities, and I felt at least obligated to mention it once.

This falls squarely into the category of "if I go on an acid trip, can I drag out this episode three times longer than it actually is?"

We.

Are 55 seconds in.

And we are already getting to the conflict.

...Hand me the bong. The BIG bong. If you see dogs in my front yard, just tell 'em to get inside and glow upstairs because I'm goin' hard.

...I'm not touching the timing of this call because convenience is in literally every piece of media with video chatting ever. It's not just a Wordsville thing.

No but seriously, I can't look at this character and not think of Chef O from Odd Squad UK. The brainrot set in once I viewed the trailer. It hasn't left.

Hey, it's a good marketing tactic.

And it makes a great gift for your SO if they happen to have a name that starts with any of the letters. Hell, get the U, the T and the I and you'd have a winner!

In this era of super-powerful processors and AI seeping into anything and everything, there is no scientifically possible way Gabby can pull up a computer dictionary within milliseconds.

And when Odd Squad, the show that has ironic low-tech stuff, is more realistic than your high-tech show, you got a problem.

Minute and a half into this thing and this is the only bit that got me close to smiling thus far.

But something I wanna point out is that I've gotten cookies from bakeries that look a lot better than that. Hell, the cookies at my local supermarket look better than that! Just as big, and far yummier!

I see they switched around the personalities for Sly and Gabby, and I can see why.

Gabby emotes the most.

So does Olive.

Gabby is Olive with a braid and a fedora.

Gabby is the serious o- guys, really, must I go on?

Something something substituting bagels like in "Soundcheck" for donuts instead.

This is what happens when you let your co-CEO binge-watch all the Shrek movies, Sly.

Odd Squad doesn't drop the title all that much, but the fact that the episodes are referred to as cases in-universe sells the comparison. Wordsville's cases are just...different. Copyright infringement and all that. When Oprah sues, she sues hard.

...Look, I know what the "Sly-mation" is and y'all are not being slick. You don't get to wave a fucking stylus in my face and say what you're doing is animation but with a fancy name. Animation is hard. Animating stuff halfway and slapping your client's head on their animated body instead of drawing a face resembling your client is a disservice and I will abso-fucking-lutely take that personally as a fan of animation.

I mean, hey, if I were an animator, I'd fully commit. You people remember that the studio who made this worked on a Spongebob movie. Lemme repeat: a Spongebob movie. And yet this is what they decide to do for animation.

When Odd Squad does animation, it's good in most instances. (I choose to forget "Olive and Otto in Shmumberland", TYVM.) Not anything stellar, but it certainly is passable. Here? Lol. Lmao, even. God no. This feels like a way to insert animation into the show but without employing the CGI that other shows, Odd Squad included, have. Like a "lol I'm so quirky" thing.

Get out.

This is like if Disney had Disneymation. Dreamworksation. Laikation. Netflixation. Huluation. So on and so forth.

Point being, it's dumb. Just say it's animation and stop plopping flowers onto it. When you get more of a time limit, then you can be quirky all you want.

We are now 2 minutes into an 8-minute episode. I know what's happening. Kids know what's happening. Unless you're banking on the research that kids' attention spans are the size of a pea, we do not need a recap.

...Is this really the same person who wrote for Endlings? Because apparently they can't handle something in an 8-minute timeframe.

You either get the Chad Blender/Flash/ToonBoom, or you get the Virgin Mock Scratch.

I just feel cheated. Disappointed. Like when your mom and dad drove by McDonald's when you were a kid after they promised you they would get you some. I've seen good animation. They had the chance to do better, and didn't. That's what pisses me off the most. It's that complete utter wasted potential.

I know Vet Wilder is a reference to some celebrity (the name is at least somewhat familiar), but I'm at a complete loss as to if they did the same thing for Athlete Glory or if they just confined a girl named Glory to one destiny in life.

So she'll become...a Faded Glory.

Okay, they're reiterating this for the young children, and I- guys, this hurts. It's like they're trying to differentiate themselves from Odd Squad but tripping over their own feet in the process.

Ten cookies Gene Vet Wilder gave it to an animal named Yummy and that this series will go down another Odd Squad route and defy biology.

Either that, or "Yummy" is his pet name for Not-So-Faded Glory, which I am banking absolutely nothing on because romance.

...No, not Baker Graham's cookies. I'm sure dude's good at what he does, but I know of a better bakery, thank you very much.
