The free school lunch initiative for children from poor or disadvantaged families was introduced by President-elect Prabowo Subianto and Vice-President-elect Gibran Rakabuming Raka as one of their key campaign promises. Mr Gibran is President Joko Widodo’s elder son...

The pair – who won the Feb 14 presidential election by a landslide and will be inaugurated in October – had in the lead-up to the polls pledged to offer free lunches and milk for students as well as nutritional aid to toddlers and pregnant women in a bid to lower the country’s stunting rate.

Over 20 per cent of Indonesian children under the age of five experienced stunted growth in 2022, according to the United Nations. Stunting, which is being too short for one’s age as a result of poor nutrition, can result in long-term development delays.

When fully implemented by 2029, the programme will cover 83.9 million beneficiaries across the world’s fourth-most-populous nation of nearly 280 million, and cost over 400 trillion rupiah (S$33.7 billion) a year – about 2 per cent of annual gross domestic product.

But on the ground, a trial that was first rolled out in January at 16 schools in Sukabumi, in West Java, has been warmly received by around 3,500 students, their parents and school leaders, who have seen positive changes.

For one thing, saving on the cost of lunches for four of her nine children has provided significant finan­cial relief for Indonesian house­wife Rofiati, 46.

Her husband, a teacher at an Islamic boarding school in Sukabumi, earns 2.5 million rupiah a month on average, and the free school meals have helped them save about 420,000 rupiah monthly, which she can put towards other household needs.

Her children do not usually have breakfast before school. Before the free lunch programme, her children would eat lunch only upon returning home from school. Lunch would usually consist of instant noodles, or dishes of vegetables, eggs, tempeh or salted fish.

“I am not worried any more because I know they will eat at school. They have more appetite as they eat together with their friends,” Ms Rofiati told The Straits Times, adding that her children’s appetites have improved and they also like the variety of the meals provided. In fact, her 11-year-old daughter has gained 4kg since the programme started.

Every day, students on the programme receive a lunch package worth 15,000 rupiah, containing rice, meat such as chicken, fish or beef, vegetables, fruit and milk.

At home, the family usually eats meat only once a week.

It is not just the financial savings that parents are happy about. Ms Depi Ratna Juwarti, who has two out of three children benefiting from the free lunches, has noticed other encouraging results.

“They rarely get sick now. They are more motivated to study and spend a longer time studying at night,” Ms Depi said.

Her eldest daughter, Adifa Alifiya Mahrain, 12, also has good reviews. “The food is always delicious and the menu changes every day. I always eat everything. It’s a lot of fun to eat together with my friends,” said Adifa, who hopes to become a paediatrician in the future.

Mr Shalahudin Sanusi, principal of Gelarsari Islamic primary school in Sukabumi, which is trialling the programme, said he has noticed that pupils have been able to concentrate better and understand lessons more.

He said the initiative has raised the attendance rate of its 110 pupils from 85 per cent to 95 per cent. “They eat modestly at home – mostly rice and salted fish. Rice and eggs are the best they can get,” he told ST. “Now, they are so excited, some even arrive in school at 6am, an hour before lessons start.”"

Trevor Scheel was sentenced on June 2024 to six and a half years in prison for the drunken driving hit-and-run crash that killed a 73-year-old woman as she was crossing Mason Street.

Scheel, 24, pleaded no contest to hit and run causing death and homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle for the April 18, 2023 crash which killed Roselita Helms.

Scheel was also placed on extended supervision for six and a half years. The judge also required Scheel to have an ignition interlock device on his vehicle for five years.

After the crash on W. Mason Street and 16th Avenue witness described seeing a BMW go past him at a high rate of speed.

“(The witness) saw the car hit a female who was crossing the street, causing her to fly approximately 10 feet in the air and then strike the ground,” the complaint states. “(The witness) saw that the car did not attempt to brake, slow down, or stop before striking the woman.”

Scheel was arrested at Mason and Clay streets a short time after the crash.

“I was an alcoholic last year, almost four months being sober, and I went to the casino today and had two vodka red bulls,” the complaint quotes Scheel as saying. A preliminary breath test revealed a blood alcohol level of .222, nearly three times the legal limit of. 08.

During the field sobriety test, Scheel repeatedly said “you got me, I did it,” and later said “I killed someone.”

Well, I don't think I'd be qualified to cover every function that uses two inputs, and I would assume every function is quite a few and probably would cover every day

Oh my gosh, you’ll never believe what I saw on my lunch break today. I took a walk around the park and there was this little mama duck, and she had a little trail of babies following after her. I nearly cried. I was late getting back to the shop because I stayed to watch them swim around in the pond. And I- Oh, I just remembered I sent you a video of that. Well, I’m telling you again because it bears repeating. One of these days when we move out of the city, we should get a bunch of animals or something. I think I’d make a good farmer. Grand Theft Motor Vehicle, Burglary of an Unoccupied Building, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Credit Card Fraud

In November 2023, a Florida man, released from prison on Sept. 16 after serving a little less than two years on charges including human trafficking and child abuse, was back in jail after Miami-Dade police said he and another man went on a crime spree.

Tristan Brandon Sarut, 23, of Overtown, faced 11 felony charges after a series of vehicle break-ins and an SUV theft in west Miami-Dade’s Fontainebleau area, police said.

According to an arrest report, Sarut and the unidentified suspect targeted cars in the 9000 block of Grand Canal Drive during the early morning hours of Oct. 22.

Police said they recognized Sarut, with his distinctive neck tattoos, on CCTV footage as one of the suspects breaking into vehicles while toting a gun. They said he also stole a Chevrolet Suburban.

The next day, Hialeah police pulled the Suburban over in the 2100 block of West Eighth Avenue, according to the report. Police said Sarut was behind the wheel.

He received a new sentence of 5 years for his most recent actions.

well it's a long way away, but it will probably be almost the first one I write after wygig. but it's so sweet that you've been thinking about it 😭 that makes me ridiculously happy.

anyway, here is a little piece from it. I honestly don't really remember what I've shared, but I feel fairly positive that this is very different to everything else I've shared from that piece.

also, I wrote all of this before Lewis' move to Ferrari, so I have yet to decide whether I'm going to rework that detail. just as fyi, bc Lewis at Mercedes is mentioned in here haha.

Max Verstappen Announces Memoir, “What I Was Made For.”

Max Verstappen shocked the world this morning by breaking his two year social media silence to announce his memoir. 

Verstappen started his Instagram post by firstly addressing his long hiatus from social media. 

“What started as a small break quickly turned into a complete life overhaul,” he wrote. 

“I started to reflect on my life and my childhood after my dad died in 2029, but it took me a few years to realise I needed to go deeper. When I decided to take that dive, I started to journal. Eventually, I realised I was writing a book.” 

Verstappen continued on by announcing that his memoir would be called What I Was Made For. 

“My memoir deals almost exclusively with my relationship with my father. It’s painful at points, and more honest than I’ve ever been in my life. I think that you’ll learn things about me that you might have already guessed, and probably some things that you wish you’d never found out. Either way, getting this out was the most cathartic thing I’ve ever done in my life. My memoir is called What I Was Made For, and it’s out October first.” 

Verstappen’s relationship with his father was highly debated during his time in Formula One. While both father and son were quite open about the relationship they had during the younger’s childhood, there were different opinions on whether it was a positive or a negative. 

Jos Verstappen drove in Formula One himself, though he never won a race or a Championship. Max entered Formula One at just sixteen years old, and subsequently became the youngest person to ever win an F1 race. 

Verstappen is now a seven-time Formula One World Champion, tied with Michael Schumacher for the second most Championships of all time. Lewis Hamilton holds the record of eight Championships, a record he broke in 2027, after which he retired. 

Verstappen won his seventh Championship the following year, in 2028, in very controversial fashion after he collided with his main rival Charles Leclerc. Leclerc had joined Mercedes that year, taking Hamilton’s seat, and was on track to win his first Championship. Verstappen was only four points ahead of Leclerc going into the final race, but after their collision neither scored points, leaving the Championship to Verstappen. 

While we don’t exactly know the contents of Verstappen’s memoir, it’s assumed from his post that it will detail his time before entering Formula One, perhaps even during it. Verstappen never made an announcement around his reason for retiring from the sport, so likely the book will explain this as well. 

With the memoir being released in only six weeks, it’s likely there will be more details to come.

Bad Day for Batman

If you are a massive Batman fan today is definitely not a good day for you. Both Batman: The Brave and the Bold and The Batman 2 were delayed.

The Batman 2 moves from October of 2026 to now release in October of 2027. This is bad news all around for DC and their world building. The Batman 2 will now release 5 years after the first and will have lost so much momentum that The Penguin just helped build for it.

Why the Brave and the Bold is so bad is because the new iteration of the DCU just launched. This means there is no likely DCU solo Batman project until 2028 or 2029 as of right now. No production is even scheduled to begin, and no screenplay has been finalized. It begs the question of why launch a new universe without knowing how your most well-known hero is going to factor into that.

Whether people like it or not, Batman is the hero for DC that sells. He is the most recognizable hero on the planet alongside Superman and Spider-Man. Without him there people may not want to get invested in these solo projects. Sure, there are ways you can bring him in as a supporting player, but that also may backfire. It certainly did for The Flash and they had multiple Batmen in that film.

It seems like all of these announcements were premature from James Gunn. It seems like he wanted to get ahead of the game but had no writers and timeline in place before crafting his wider scope. Which is bad. He should know this, having directed multiple big budget projects. Fans don't like hearing delays. Most general audiences don't care about the reason. They want movies when they are announced to release. Especially now from DC. We have seen DC fail too much to see any of this as a positive for the brand moving forward. It's time to buckle down and make Batman a priority. If they don't, the interest they are hoping for in other projects may slowly disappear.
