it’s almost thursday but I’m tagging @hythlodaes @scionshtola @coldshrugs @birues @aphoticfairy @creaking-skull @ghostwise @galadae @newbordeaux @jennystahl @reverienne @erielake @kirnet @musingmycelium because I want to see your things!! not much progress was made on my ffxiv fics this week to share, but I did get consumed by a little pre-DAI thing of leliana ruminating on gabriel, which I’ve been having fun writing from an npc pov on my oc for once shdgh anyway here it is so far:

The world knew him as a hero, but in her heart, he was Gabriel, simply a man.

That wasn’t to say that he wasn’t extraordinary. Though the many tales of his exploits had been exaggerated across the years, as with any good story, the majority of them were true. He survived a besieged castle to unite the unlikeliest of allies and save the continent from the blight. He had slain the treacherous Arl with his own family sword, avenging his fallen family and home, and maneuvered countless politicians with his own noble grace to restore peace amidst tragedy. He served his land as its warden, steadfast in carrying its burdens on his reticent shoulders.

But he was still a man, and no man could be made myth from the dents in his armor, and of those he had plenty.

None of the stories told how his hands shook until Leliana took them between her own and washed away the Arl’s blood. History would not recount the son born to save the Wardens’ lives, a son never knowing his father, and a father never knowing if he made the right choices for him. Nor did they tell of how Leliana held him close by the low-burning fire each night, softly singing his demons to sleep.

Oh, but she knew all of them by name.

3 Ships

Canon Ship: If we're talking ships that happen in canon, I think I have to say Emiya Shirou/Tohsaka Rin/Saber, from Fate/stay night (Unlimited Blade Works - Good End). They balance each other both in-universe and narratively, and they all deserve that chance to be a bit more human.

OC Ship: My STO Vulcan captain, Arisia V'Laan, and her colleague-turned-XO, Halshira Tarsi (who is like 2.5% a canon character but has no first name and no voice lines after the first couple missions). I love them dearly and they repay me by refusing to come out onto the page.

Ship of the Week: I've mainly been chiseling away at my Dragon Age fic, so I suppose I'll say my Origins crew, in particular Niassa Cousland and Julian Surana (who takes the place of Dairren/Iona in that particular sidequest).

1st Ship: This one's surprisingly difficult to reach back to, but the first ship that I got really invested in was Jaune and Pyrrha in the first few seasons of RWBY.

UNCHARTED

NIKOLAOS DIAMANTIS ROSSI Nikolaos: Greek origin, meaning “victor of the people.” The name is apt in the context of a pyrrhic victory if you consider the way the Uncharted 4 timeline ends for him, but it was initially chosen because I wanted to steal the name “Niko” from a defunct Star Wars OC of mine that will never again see the light of day. (And because I wanted him to be Greek on his father’s side. In-universe, he is named for his father’s father.) Diamantis: Greek origin, meaning “diamond.” Chosen sonically, but the meaning is apt enough owing to his wealth and the treasure vibes of the Uncharted franchise in general. Rossi: Italian origin, meaning “red-haired.” Only my choice in the sense that I decided to make him a part of the canonical Rossi family (the “Mrs. Rossi” mentioned in passing by the floor manager in the Rossi Estate is his mother). GIOVANNA DIAMANTIS ROSSI Giovanna: Italian origin, meaning “God is gracious.” She was originally a Gianna, but this presented an unfortunate conflict with her younger sister’s name, so I changed it. In-universe, she is named for her mother’s father (Giovanni). TALIA DIAMANTIS ROSSI Talia: Hebrew origin, meaning “dew of God.” I was considering the Greek name Thalia, but realized there was an Italian-friendly alternative, as Talia is the name of a character in an Italian fairy tale. Since the sisters are more immediately associated with their mother’s side of the whole Diamantis/Rossi business model, that’s the one that stuck.

CYBERPUNK 2077

LEON VALERO Leon: Greek origin, meaning “lion.” Flop reasoning on my part. He’s a Leo and it suits him. That’s literally it. However, there’s a quest in-game where V is dubbed “the furious lion” by an NPC, which was a funny but unexpected nod. Valero: Spanish origin, a place name derived from Valero, in Salamanca province, Spain. No reason for this choice other than I needed a “V” name of Spanish origin. (He is mixed—primarily Mexican and Japanese, some Russian—but his mother specifically was a Valero, before he was raised as one of Padre’s boys.) TOBIAS LYNCH Tobias: Hebrew origin, meaning “God is good.” I like how it sounds. End reasoning. Lynch: Irish origin, meaning “hill.” No specific purpose. I knew I wanted a name of Irish origin and it flowed well with the siblings’ first names. SAOIRSE LYNCH Saoirse: Irish origin, meaning “liberty.” Again, no purpose, only sound.

DRAGON AGE

GAVIN COUSLAND Gavin: Scottish origin, derived from Gawain, meaning “white hawk.” I just liked the sound and the Arthurian vibes. Cousland: Scottish origin, derived from the Gaelic form of Absolom, meaning “father of peace.” Not my choice, canon default for a human noble. CAIUS TREVELYAN Caius: Latin origin, meaning “rejoice.” In-universe, his name was plucked straight from the family tree (the Tevinter relative from way, way back—hilarious). Trevelyan: Welsh and Cornish origin, meaning “homestead on the hill.” Not my choice, canon default for a human noble (again).

MASS EFFECT

GABRIEL SHEPARD Gabriel: Hebrew origin, meaning “God is my strength.” Chosen because I love that biblical shit; you already know. Specifically, I thought it would be funny if he was named after the messenger, because no one listens to him when he says the Reapers are coming. It’s funny. Hush. Unintentional, but it also allowed for an in-universe reference to Garrus’s vigilante moniker (Archangel), one he chose—in my personal canon anyway—as a way to honor his human friend (and known proponent of vigilante justice!) whom he thought to be dead. Shepard: English origin, meaning “sheep herder.” Not my choice, canon default. (He sure does herd sheep though, boy howdy.)

THE WAYHAVEN CHRONICLES

LEVI XIAO Levi: Hebrew origin, meaning “joined together” or “joined in harmony.” It’s also meant to be evocative of “Leviathan,” because his father is NOT dead, actually; he’s a god-creature from the Echo World, currently in horror-stasis at the Agency headquarters for his Crimes™, which is much better than being dead. Surely. Absolutely. The Hebrew origin is relevant because his mother’s side of the family is Jewish. Xiao: Chinese origin, written as 蕭, meaning “mournful” or “desolate.” His father’s chosen surname for passing in the human world. His father is not actually Chinese (obviously), but China was his place of origin in terms of his initial entry into the Right-Side-Up and the physical features of his human form are all reflective of this.

Things I love most about my OTPs

I got tagged by @caffeinated-mabari a looong time ago, but I’m a mess and only got around to it now lol I’m so sorry, but also very thankful to you for tagging me, this has been a lot of fun <3 Rhoswen Cousland and Leliana 

They have become one of my favorite pairings in life, and I think that what I love the most about them is how commited they are to each other. Throughout their fight to stop the Fifth Blight, Leliana’s faith in the Maker and in their quest gave Rhoswen the strength to believe that they were doing the right thing and that they could actually win. Meanwhile, Rhoswen’s unwavering faith in her even after each new piece of information she revealed about her past gave Leliana the strength to believe that she truly could be the person she wanted to be. In the years after the Blight, that never changed: on many occasions, the two were sent to different corners of Thedas as Rhoswen tended to her Grey Warden duties and Leliana tended to her work as Left Hand of the Divine and, eventually, Divine Victoria. Even so, they always had one another in their thoughts, they collected small gifts to deliver in their every reunion, and most importantly, they kept their faith in their love and in the work they were both doing for Thedas. And if they ever falter, the two of them know that the other will be there and will find a way to remind them of the worth of what they are doing. Always.

 Gabrielle Hawke and Isabela

I think that what I like the most about these two is how they challenge other. They are two rogues with impressive skills, so there is always an underlying tone of trying to outdo the other (all in good fun), or to execute a technique so well that the other will be in awe. Plus, it’s a battle of wits, of jokes, of seduction, of games and games of Wicked Grace. And they challenge each other to be better and to open up more, too. Gabrielle has been one of Isabela’s inspirations for overcoming her fear of falling in love and for trying to do more good more often. Isabela was fundamental in keeping Gabrielle grounded after Bethany was taken to the Circle, and she has made Gabrielle more tenacious and more able to think and calculate before she acts. They keep each other sharp, and they wouldn’t have it any other way.

 Willow Trevelyan and Josephine Montilyet

I think my favorite thing about Willow and Josie is how they absolutely adore spending time together. They are quite similar to each other in a number of ways, and for the both of them it is a relief to know that someone gets it. They are comfortable around each other, they like to geek over history and heraldry, they dance beautifully together, they enjoy balls and social events, they like to laugh and gossip about the ridiculous fashion trends in Orlais once they are back in their chambers. They revel in the warm, comfortable peace of being together.  BASICS

Full name: Rhoswen Eleanor Cousland

Gender: Fem 

Sexuality: She honestly doesn’t know, and doesn’t really think about it. Before Leliana, Rhoswen would focus solely on her training and studies, skillfully avoiding every suitor her mother tried to introduce her to. And after Leliana, well… there has only been Leliana.   

Family: For seventeen years, Rhoswen lived with her older brother Fergus, her mother Eleanor, and her father Bryce in Highever. At a young age, she managed to dodge the guards and flee the castle in order to “have adventures”. She freed a mabari puppy from a trap, and it was that same mabari that protected her from some nasty spiders. The girl named him Dane because she had always loved heroic tales, and ever since Bryce and the guards found the child and the little mabari in the woods surrounding Highever, Rhoswen and Dane have been inseparable. After tragically losing her parents, Rhoswen found new families: the ragtag group that helped her stop the Blight, the Grey Wardens, and Leliana. Rhoswen, Leliana, Dane and Schmooples started a little family of their own, full of love, music, and laughter.

Job(s): Grey Warden; Warden-Commander of Ferelden; eventually, First Warden.

Phobias: Ever since the night of the betrayal, and after spending so much time camping under the stars, Rhoswen has had trouble to sleep in closed spaces. She always needs at least one large window opened so she can hear any suspicious sounds from the outside (and in order not to feel like she is suffocating, or have flashbacks of that night). She is not too concerned for her safety, because Dane is always guarding her.

Guilty pleasures: Her competitive side makes her unable to turn down a challenge or a game, as stupid as it may be. Wynne would sigh in frustration many times as she prepared some herbal tea for two moronic Grey Wardens who had spent the previous night eating way too much (even for a Grey Warden’s standard) just so they could defeat each other. Rhoswen just gets too much of a kick out of silly competitions.

Hobbies: Reading and listening to heroic tales. She has always loved them, so she is captivated by all the stories Leliana tells her;

Sword training. She spends hours practing her techniques, and she loves it;

Running with Dane. It keeps her quick on her feet and gives the two a good chance to roll around in the grass.  

MORALS

Morality alignment: lawful good/neutral good. It depends on the point of her journey.

(those are xtian concepts and i’m not xtian neither is she so i changed it) (i’m just coping Diana now haha)

Sins Bad qualities: can be too naive at times, can find it difficult to open up (especially after the night of the betrayal), can get stuck on “doing what is right” and then having to face the consequences, can be quite reckless (especially in a fight), can be stubborn.

Virtues Good qualities: a good listener, a good leader, is open to change, loyal, kind, truly cares about people, very skilled with a sword (two, actually), quick on her feet, fast learner. Also, dutiful (Couslands always do their duty first, am I right?) (also, can you tell I love her?)

And Leliana was taken aback by someone so honest and accepting after years of masks and being judged. Nowadays, they are two very powerful people who support each other and continue to try to make the world a better place. They understand, respect, and love each other.

Acceptable ships: Only Rhoswen and Leliana for me, I’m very particular about this one lol

OT3: Not for Rhoswen, sorry (ask me about Gabrielle Hawke later tho)

BroTP: Rhoswen and Alistair, the disaster Wardens who become siblings; Rhoswen and Morrigan, the unlikely friendship that means a lot to the two of them; Rhoswen and Zevran, especially as he was the lovable third-wheel as she and Leliana traveled together after the Blight; Rhoswen and Shale, the bickering yet loyal duo; Rhoswen and Nathaniel, the Cousland and the Howe overcoming past tragedies and becoming great friends; Rhoswen and Thom, the battered Wardens.

Bonus: Rhoswen and Wynne are more of a mentor/student thing, as the older woman provides Rhoswen with much needed advice (and care); Rhoswen and Sten, two very different people who come to respect each other deeply.

NOTP: I don’t know..? I mean, I ship her with Leliana only, but I can’t think of anything that would be way too gross to be a not… oh, wait. Don’t ship her with Oghren, thank you.
