i think maybe the one thing that's shaped me more than anything else is my contradictory feelings about my father

in a lot of ways, i'm really uncannily similar to him. you know, if he wasn't a liar. and transitioned. in all honestly i'm practically a clone aside from those two details

and like, i've been aware of this for a while and i've been really torn up about it, because i don't wanna be like him

to me, two things are more important than anything else:

the most important thing is to hate my father.

the most important thing is not to hate my father.

those two impulses have been warring inside me since i was four years old, and i don't think either of them have won. significant parts of my psyche were constructed specifically to facilitate avoiding feeling anger or hatred toward him for leaving me and my mother.

i think this is the reason i'm so similar to him

i think this is my way of having my cake and eating it

i've made myself into a replica, a substitute, an effigy. i think this is why i hate myself so much, why i always have. i already knew i hated myself to avoid hating him, to displace the blame for my abandonment. but do you see? if i'm just like him, i can hate him without hating him. i can satisfy both imperatives at once

maybe this is why i can't make a choice about my identity to save my life, why i can't be certain about any part of who i am. on a foundational level, my "self" is built on superposition of opposites. every coin i flip lands on its edge because the first one did.

MY GOODNESS. it's been a hot minute since i posted the first part and i guess i just couldn't SHUT UP because this is FOURTEEN PAGES LONG.
